Ayodhya Kanda (Book of Ayodhya)

Book Cover

Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa explores the emotional and moral heart of the Rāmāyaṇa. It opens with preparations for Rāma’s coronation, which fills Ayodhyā with joy. However, due to Kaikeyī’s boons—instigated by the scheming Mantharā—Rāma is exiled for fourteen years. Rāma’s serene acceptance of fate, Sītā’s unwavering resolve to accompany Him, and Lakṣmaṇa’s fierce loyalty exemplify ideal dharma. King Daśaratha, unable to bear separation from his beloved son, dies in grief. Meanwhile, Bharata refuses to accept the throne unjustly and instead meets Rāma in the forest, pleading for His return. Rāma, steadfast in dharma, sends Bharata back as His representative, entrusting him with the kingdom until His return. This kāṇḍa beautifully illustrates righteousness, sacrifice, and the noble conduct of a dharmic family.
