VERSE 1

जटिलं चीरवसनं प्राञ्जलिं पतितं भुवि
ददर्श रामो दुर्दर्शं युगान्ते भास्करं यथा

jaṭilaṃ cīravasanaṃ prāñjaliṃ patitaṃ bhuvi
dadarśa rāmo durdarśaṃ yugānte bhāskaraṃ yathā

SYNONYMS

rāmaḥ: Rama | dadarśa: saw | jaṭilam: with matted locks | cīravasanam: wearing bark-robes | prāṅjalim: and with joined palms | patitam: lying | bhuvi: on the ground | durdarśam: incapable of being seen | bhāskaram yathā: as the sun | yugānte: at the end of the world-period. |

TRANSLATION

Rama saw Bharata, with matted locks, wearing bark-robes and, with joined palms, lying on the ground, incapable of being seen as the sun at the time of the dissolution of the world.

VERSE 2

कथं चिदभिविज्ञाय विवर्णवदनं कृशम्
भ्रातरं भरतं रामः परिजग्राह बाहुना

kathaṃ cidabhivijñāya vivarṇavadanaṃ kṛśam
bhrātaraṃ bharataṃ rāmaḥ parijagrāha bāhunā

SYNONYMS

rāmaḥ: Rama | katham cit: with some difficulty | abhiz^ṇāya: recognized | bharatam: Bharata | vivarṇa vadanam: whose face became pale | kṛśam: who was emaciated | parijagrāha: and took | bhrātaram: his brother | bāhunā: by the arm. |

TRANSLATION

Rama recognized with some difficulty his brother Bharata, whose face became pale and who was emaciated, and took him by the arm.

VERSE 3

आघ्राय रामः तम् मूर्ध्नि परिष्वज्य च राघवः
अन्के भरतम् आरोप्य पर्यपृग्च्छत् समाहितः

āghrāya rāmaḥ tam mūrdhni pariṣvajya ca rāghavaḥ
anke bharatam āropya paryapṛgcchat samāhitaḥ

SYNONYMS

āghrāya: smelling | mūrdhni: the crown of his head | āropya: placing him | an^ke: on his lap | rāmaḥ: Rama | rāghavaḥ: born in Raghu dynasty | pariṣvajya ca: embraced | tam bharatam: that Bharata | paryapṛcchat: and enquired (as follows) | samāhitaḥ: with an absorbent mind. |

TRANSLATION

Smelling the crown of his head, placing him on his lap, Rama who was born in Raghu dynasty embraced Bharata and with an absorbent mind, enquired of him as follows:

VERSE 4

क्व नु ते अभूत् पिता तात यद् अरण्यम् त्वम् आगतः
न हि त्वम् जीवतः तस्य वनम् आगन्तुम् अर्हसि

kva nu te abhūt pitā tāta yad araṇyam tvam āgataḥ
na hi tvam jīvataḥ tasya vanam āgantum arhasi

SYNONYMS

tāta: my darling! | kvam: where | abhūt: is | te pitā: your father | yat tvam: (that) you | āgataḥ: have come | araṇyam: to the forest? | tasya: He | jīvitaḥ: being alive | tvam: you | na arhasi hi: ought not have | āgatum: to come | vanam: to the forest. |

TRANSLATION

"My darling! Where is our father, that you have come to the forest? He, being alive, you ought not have to come to the forest."

VERSE 5

चिरस्य बत पश्यामि दूराद् भरतम् आगतम्
दुष्प्रतीकम् अरण्ये अस्मिन् किम् तात वनम् आगतः

cirasya bata paśyāmi dūrād bharatam āgatam
duṣpratīkam araṇye asmin kim tāta vanam āgataḥ

SYNONYMS

paśyāmi: I see | bharatam: Bharata | cirasya: after a long time | āgatam: who comes | dūrāt: from a far-off distance | duṣpratīkam: wearing a mournful face | asmin araṇye: into this forest | bata: Alas! | tāta: My darling! | kim: why | āgataḥ: have you come | vanam: to the forest?. |

TRANSLATION

"I see you after a long time, coming from a far-off distance, wearing a mournful face into this forest Alas! Why have you come to the forest, my darling?"

VERSE 6

कच्चिद्धारयए तात राजा यत्त्वमिहागतः
कच्चिन्न दीनः सहसा राजा लोकान्तरं गतः

kacciddhārayae tāta rājā yattvamihāgataḥ
kaccinna dīnaḥ sahasā rājā lokāntaraṃ gataḥ

SYNONYMS

tāta: my dear brother! | kacciddhārayate rājā: Is the king alive? yat tvam = (that) you | āgataḥ: have come | iha: here? | dīnaḥ rājā: (I hope) the miserable king | na gataḥ kaccit: has not indeed departed | lokāntaram: to the other world | sahasā: all of a sudden. |

TRANSLATION

"My dear brother! Is the king alive, that you have come here? I hope the miserable king has not indeed departed to the other world, all of a sudden."

VERSE 7

कच्चित्सौम्य नते राज्यं भ्रष्ठं बालस्य शाश्वतम्
कच्चिछुश्रूषसे तात पितरं सत्यविक्रमम्

kaccitsaumya nate rājyaṃ bhraṣṭhaṃ bālasya śāśvatam
kaccichuśrūṣase tāta pitaraṃ satyavikramam

SYNONYMS

saumya: O | śāśvatam: the permanent | rājyam: kingdom | na bhraṣṭam kaccit: has in no way suffered | te: from your | bālasya: youthful inexperience | tāta: My darling! | śuśrūṣate kaccit: Are you rendering service | pitaram: to our father | satyavikramam: who is truly valiant? |

TRANSLATION

"O, gentle brother! I hope the eternal kingdom has in a no way suffered from your youthful experience. My darling! Are you rendering service to our father, who is truly valiant?"

VERSE 8

कच्चिद् दशरथो राजा कुशली सत्य सम्गरः
राज सूय अश्व मेधानाम् आहर्ता धर्म निश्चयः

kaccid daśaratho rājā kuśalī satya samgaraḥ
rāja sūya aśva medhānām āhartā dharma niścayaḥ

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope that | rājā daśarathaḥ: the king Dasaratha | kuśalī: is well | satyasangaraḥ: he who is true to his promise | āhartā rāja sūyāśva medhānām: he who performs Rajasuya and Ashvamedha sacrifices | dharma niścayaḥ: and he who has a righteous resolve. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope that the King Dasaratha is well, he who is true to his promise, he who performs Rajasuya and Ashvamedha Sacrifices and he who has a righteous resolve."

VERSE 9

स कच्चिद् ब्राह्मणो विद्वान् धर्म नित्यो महा द्युतिः
इक्ष्वाकूणाम् उपाध्यायो यथावत् तात पूज्यते

sa kaccid brāhmaṇo vidvān dharma nityo mahā dyutiḥ
ikṣvākūṇām upādhyāyo yathāvat tāta pūjyate

SYNONYMS

tāta: My darling! puujyate kachchit = are you treating respectfully | yathāvat: as before | saḥ: that | upādhyāyaḥ: preceptor | ikṣvākūṇām: of the Ikshvakus | brāhmaṇaḥ: the one who knows the sacred scriptures | vidvān: the learned | dhamanityaḥ: who constantly keeps up the virtues | mahādyutiḥ: and who has a great splendour. |

TRANSLATION

"My darling! Are you treating respectfully as before that preceptor of the Ikshvakus, the one who knows the sacred scriptures, the one who knows the sacred scriptures, the learned who constantly keep up the virtues and he who has a great splendour?"

VERSE 10

सा तात कच्चिच् च कौसल्या सुमित्रा च प्रजावती
सुखिनी कच्चिद् आर्या च देवी नन्दति कैकयी

sā tāta kaccic ca kausalyā sumitrā ca prajāvatī
sukhinī kaccid āryā ca devī nandati kaikayī

SYNONYMS

tāta: My darling! | kaccit: I hope | sā kausalyā: that Kausalya | sumitrāca: and Sumitra | prajāratī: having good offspring | sukhinī: are happy | āryā: the venerable | devī: queen | kaikeyī: Kaikeyi | nandati: is rejoicing. |

TRANSLATION

"My darling! I hope that Kausalya and Sumitra having good offspring are happy. I hope the venerable queen Kaikeyi is rejoicing."

VERSE 11

कच्चिद् विनय सम्पन्नः कुल पुत्रो बहु श्रुतः
अनसूयुर् अनुद्रष्टा सत्कृतः ते पुरोहितः

kaccid vinaya sampannaḥ kula putro bahu śrutaḥ
anasūyur anudraṣṭā satkṛtaḥ te purohitaḥ

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope that | purohitaḥ: the preceptor | vinayasampannaḥ: who is rich in humility | kulaputraḥ: a son of a noble family | bahuśrutaḥ: who has a knowledge of many scriptures | anasūyuḥ: an unenvious person | anudraṣṭā: and full of insight | satkṛtaḥ: is duly honoured | te: by you. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope that the preceptor (Suyajgna the son of Vasishta); who is rich in humility, a son of a noble family, who has a knowledge of many scriptures an unenvious person and who is full of insight, is duly honoured by you."

VERSE 12

कच्चिद् अग्निषु ते युक्तो विधिज्नो मतिमान् ऋजुः
हुतम् च होष्यमाणम् च काले वेदयते सदा

kaccid agniṣu te yukto vidhijno matimān ṛjuḥ
hutam ca hoṣyamāṇam ca kāle vedayate sadā

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope that | vidhijṅaḥ: a brahmin who is versed in the traditions | matimān: who is intelligent | ṛyuḥ: and just | yuktaḥ: employed | te: in your | agniṣu: sacred fires | sadā: always | vedayate: informs you | kāle: in time | hutamca: and about a sacred fire having been | hoṣyamāṇamca: or going to be fed with oblations. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope that a brahmin who is versed in the traditions, who is intelligent and just, employed in your sacred fires, always informs you in time, about a sacrificial fire having been or going to be fed with oblations."

VERSE 13

कच्चिद्देवान् पित्र्^ऊन् भृत्वान्गुरून् पितृसमानपि
वृद्धांश्च तात वैद्यांश्च ब्राह्मणांश्चाभिमन्यसे

kacciddevān pitr^ūn bhṛtvāngurūn pitṛsamānapi
vṛddhāṃśca tāta vaidyāṃśca brāhmaṇāṃścābhimanyase

SYNONYMS

tāta: My darling! | kaccit: I hope that | abhimanyase: you are holding in high esteem | devān: the gods | pitṛin: your ancestors | bhṛtyān: dependents | gurūn: and teachers | vṛddhamśca: who are aged | pitṛsamān api: as your father too | vaidyāmśca: the doctors | brāhmanāmśca: and the brahmins. |

TRANSLATION

"My darling! I hope that you are holding in high esteem the gods, your ancestors, dependents and teachers of your father's age the doctors and the brahmins."

VERSE 14

इषु अस्त्र वर सम्पन्नम् अर्थ शास्त्र विशारदम्
सुधन्वानम् उपाध्यायम् कच्चित् त्वम् तात मन्यसे

iṣu astra vara sampannam artha śāstra viśāradam
sudhanvānam upādhyāyam kaccit tvam tāta manyase

SYNONYMS

tāta: O | kaccit: I hope that | tvam: you | manyase: treat with due respect | upādhyāyam: your teacher | sudhanvānam: Sudhanva | iṣvastra vara sampannam: who is furnished with the most excellent arrows and darts | artha śāstra viśāradam: well-versed in political economy. |

TRANSLATION

"O, my darling! I hope that you treat with due respect; Sudhanva, your teacher in archery, who is furnished with the most excellent arrows and darts and well-versed in political economy."

VERSE 15

कच्चिद् आत्म समाः शूराः श्रुतवन्तो जित इन्द्रियाः
कुलीनाः च इन्गितज्नाः च कृताः ते तात मन्त्रिणः

kaccid ātma samāḥ śūrāḥ śrutavanto jita indriyāḥ
kulīnāḥ ca ingitajnāḥ ca kṛtāḥ te tāta mantriṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope that | mantriṇaḥ: ministers | śūrāḥ: who are valiant | ātma samāḥ: like you | śrutavantaḥ: learned | jitendriyāḥ: masters of their senses | kulīnāśca: of noble birth | iṅgitaj^ṇāśca: and and skilled in interpreting internal sentiments by external gesture | kṛtāḥ: are assigned | te: to you. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope that ministers who are valiant like you, learned, masters of their senses of noble birth and skilled interpreting internal sentiments by external gesture, are assigned to you."

VERSE 16

मन्त्रो विजय मूलम् हि राज्नाम् भवति राघव
सुसम्वृतो मन्त्र धरैर् अमात्यैः शास्त्र कोविदैः

mantro vijaya mūlam hi rājnām bhavati rāghava
susamvṛto mantra dharair amātyaiḥ śāstra kovidaiḥ

SYNONYMS

vijaya mūlan: the source of victory | rāj^ṇām: for kings | bhavatihihi: in deed coures | samvṛtaḥ: from a concealed | mantraḥ: counsel | amātyaiḥ: by ministers | śāstra kovidaiḥ: well-versed in political sciences | mantradharaiḥ: and who can conceal their thoughts within themselves | rāghava: O |

TRANSLATION

"The source of victory for kings indeed comes from a concealed counsel by ministers, who are well-versed in political sciences and who can hide their thoughts within themselves."

VERSE 17

कच्चिन् निद्रा वशम् न एषि कच्चित् काले विबुध्यसे
कच्चिन् च अपर रात्रिषु चिन्तयस्य् अर्थ नैपुणम्

kaccin nidrā vaśam na eṣi kaccit kāle vibudhyase
kaccin ca apara rātriṣu cintayasy artha naipuṇam

SYNONYMS

naiṣī kaścit: I hope you do not | nidrā vaśam: fall a prey to excess of sleep | prabhudhyase kaccit: and wake-up | kāle: at appropriate time | cintayati kaccit: i hope you contemplate | apara rātreṣu: during the later half of the night | arthanaipuṇam: adroitness of an action. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope you do not fall a prey to excess of sleep and do wake up at appropriate time. I hope you contemplate during the later half of the night, about the adroitness of an action."

VERSE 18

कच्चिन् मन्त्रयसे न एकः कच्चिन् न बहुभिः सह
कच्चित् ते मन्त्रितो मन्त्रो राष्ट्रम् न परिधावति

kaccin mantrayase na ekaḥ kaccin na bahubhiḥ saha
kaccit te mantrito mantro rāṣṭram na paridhāvati

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope | na mantrayase: you do not deliberate | ekaḥ: alone | na kaccit: nor indeed | bahubhissaha: together with = numerous men | te mantraḥ: your decision | mantritaḥ: arrived at by you through deliberation | na paridhāvati: does not flow | rāṣṭram: to the public. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope that you do not deliberate alone nor indeed with numerous men. I hope your decision arrived at by you through such deliberation does not flow to the public (even before it is carried out)".

VERSE 19

कच्चिद् अर्थम् विनिश्चित्य लघु मूलम् महा उदयम्
क्षिप्रम् आरभसे कर्तुम् न दीर्घयसि राघव

kaccid artham viniścitya laghu mūlam mahā udayam
kṣipram ārabhase kartum na dīrghayasi rāghava

SYNONYMS

rāghava: O | kaccit: I hope that | ārabhase: you launch | kartam: to excente | kṣipram: soon | viniścitya: considering your interest | artham: an undertaking | mahodayam: which has great benefit | laghumūlam: with least cost | na dīrghayasi: and do not delay it. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Bharata! I hope considering your interest fully, you lanuch an undertaking, which has maximum benefit with minimum coast and indeed do not delay it further."

VERSE 20

कच्चित् तु सुकृतान्य् एव कृत रूपाणि वा पुनः
विदुः ते सर्व कार्याणि न कर्तव्यानि पार्थिवाः

kaccit tu sukṛtāny eva kṛta rūpāṇi vā punaḥ
viduḥ te sarva kāryāṇi na kartavyāni pārthivāḥ

SYNONYMS

kachit: I hope that | pārthivā: other kings | viduḥ: know | te: your | sarva kāryāṇi: entire undertaking | sukṛtānyeva: only after they have been successfully completed | punah: and | kṛta rūpāni vā: which have taken shape | na: and do not get to know | kartavyāni: your proposed undertakings. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope the other kings know your entire undertakings only after they have been successfully completed as well as those which have taken a shape, but not your proposed undertakings."

VERSE 21

कच्चिन् न तर्कैर् युक्त्वा वा ये च अप्य् अपरिकीर्तिताः
त्वया वा तव वा अमात्यैर् बुध्यते तात मन्त्रितम्

kaccin na tarkair yuktvā vā ye ca apy aparikīrtitāḥ
tvayā vā tava vā amātyair budhyate tāta mantritam

SYNONYMS

tātaḥ: My darling! | kaccit: I hope that | na budhyate: it is not known (by others) | antritam: the discussion | yuktyāvā: by a strategem | tarkaiḥ: or by enquiry | ye cāpi: or by any other strategies | aparikīrtitā: no mentioned | tvayā rā: by you | tava amātyairvā: or by your ministers. |

TRANSLATION

"My darling! I hope that others are not knowing, by their enquiries or strategies or by any other approaches not mentioned, the details of discussions you make with your ministers."

VERSE 22

कच्चित् सहस्रान् मूर्खाणाम् एकम् इग्च्छसि पण्डितम्
पण्डितो ह्य् अर्थ कृग्च्छ्रेषु कुर्यान् निह्श्रेयसम् महत्

kaccit sahasrān mūrkhāṇām ekam igcchasi paṇḍitam
paṇḍito hy artha kṛgcchreṣu kuryān nihśreyasam mahat

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope | ichasi: you solicit for | ekam: one | paṅḍitam: wise man | sahasrāt: rather than for a thousand | mūrkhānām: stupids | paṅḍitaḥ: a wise man | kuryāt: can do | mahat: a great | niśreyasam: advantageous thing | artha kṛcchreṣu: in difficult matters. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope you solicit for one wise man rather than for a thousand stupids for, a wise man can be of a great help to you in difficult matters."

VERSE 23

सहस्राण्य् अपि मूर्खाणाम् यद्य् उपास्ते मही पतिः
अथ वा अप्य् अयुतान्य् एव न अस्ति तेषु सहायता

sahasrāṇy api mūrkhāṇām yady upāste mahī patiḥ
atha vā apy ayutāny eva na asti teṣu sahāyatā

SYNONYMS

yadyapi: even if | mahīpatiḥ: a king | upāste: employs | sahasrāṇi: thousands | athavā: or | āyutānyeva: tens of thousands | mūrkhāṇām: of fools | na asti: there is no | sahāyatā: helpfulness | teṣu: in them. |

TRANSLATION

"Even if a king employs thousands or tens of thousands of fools, they will not be helpful to him."

VERSE 24

एको अप्य् अमात्यो मेधावी शूरो दक्षो विचक्षणः
राजानम् राज मात्रम् वा प्रापयेन् महतीम् श्रियम्

eko apy amātyo medhāvī śūro dakṣo vicakṣaṇaḥ
rājānam rāja mātram vā prāpayen mahatīm śriyam

SYNONYMS

ekaḥ amātyo| api: even one minister | medhāvī: who is wise | śūraḥ: valiant | dakṣaḥ: efficient | vicakṣaṇaḥ: and sagacious | prāpayet: causes to secure | mahatīm: a great | śriyam: prosperity | rājānam: to the king | rājamātram vā: or to one who enjoys royal authority. |

TRANSLATION

"Even one wise, valiant sagacious and efficient minister alone can cause to secure a great prosperity to the king or to one who enjoys royal authority."

VERSE 25

कच्चिन् मुख्या महत्सु एव मध्यमेषु च मध्यमाः
जघन्याः च जघन्येषु भृत्याः कर्मसु योजिताः

kaccin mukhyā mahatsu eva madhyameṣu ca madhyamāḥ
jaghanyāḥ ca jaghanyeṣu bhṛtyāḥ karmasu yojitāḥ

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope that | mukhyāḥ: superior | bhṛtyāḥ: servants | yojitāḥ: are assigned | mahatsu: superior | karmasu eva: works only | madhyamāḥ: mediocre servants | madhyameṣu ca: in mediocre works | jaghanyāḥ tu: and inferior servants | jaghanyeṣu: in inferior works. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope that superior servants are assigned superior works only, mediocre servants in mediocre works and inferior servants in inferior works."

VERSE 26

अमात्यान् उपधा अतीतान् पितृ पैतामहान् शुचीन्
श्रेष्ठान् श्रेष्ठेषु कच्चित् त्वम् नियोजयसि कर्मसु

amātyān upadhā atītān pitṛ paitāmahān śucīn
śreṣṭhān śreṣṭheṣu kaccit tvam niyojayasi karmasu

SYNONYMS

accit: i hope | tvam: you | niyojayasi: are appointing | amātyān: (those) ministers | upadhātītān: who are incorruptible | pitṛpaitāmahān: born of the fathers and forbears of good family | śucīn: who are full of integrity | śreṣṭhān: and eminent ones | karmasu: in matters | śreṣṭhesu: of great importance. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope you are appointing those ministers, who are eminent incorruptible, born of the fathers and for bears of good family and who are full of integrity in matters of great importance."

VERSE 27

कच्चिन्नोग्रेण दण्डेन भृशमुद्वेजितप्रजम्
राज्यं तवानुजानन्ति मन्त्रिणः कैकयीसुत

kaccinnogreṇa daṇḍena bhṛśamudvejitaprajam
rājyaṃ tavānujānanti mantriṇaḥ kaikayīsuta

SYNONYMS

kaikeyī suta: o | kachit: I hope | tava: your | mantriṇaḥ: ministers | nānujānanti: do not watch as mere witnesses | bṛśam udvejita prajam: (while) your subjects tremble with great fear | rājyam: (in your) kingdom | ugre ṇa daṅḍena: by your stern scepter. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Bharata! I hope your ministers do not watch as mere witnesses, while your subjects in the kingdom wielding tremble with great fear, under your inflexible wielding of the scepter."

VERSE 28

कच्चित् त्वाम् न अवजानन्ति याजकाः पतितम् यथा
उग्र प्रतिग्रहीतारम् कामयानम् इव स्त्रियः

kaccit tvām na avajānanti yājakāḥ patitam yathā
ugra pratigrahītāram kāmayānam iva striyaḥ

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope | yājakāh: those who perform the sacrifice | nāvajānanti: do not hold you in contempt | ugra pratigrahītāram: as one who accepts terrible gifts | patitam yathā: as one who is fallen | strīyaḥ iva: as women | kāmayānam: of those lustful men. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope those who perform the sacrifice do not hold you in contempt, as one who accepts terrible gifts; as one who is fallen, as women hold in contempt of those highly lustful men."

VERSE 29

उपाय कुशलम् वैद्यम् भृत्य संदूषणे रतम्
शूरम् ऐश्वर्य कामम् च यो न हन्ति स वध्यते

upāya kuśalam vaidyam bhṛtya saṃdūṣaṇe ratam
śūram aiśvarya kāmam ca yo na hanti sa vadhyate

SYNONYMS

yaḥ: he who | na hanti: does not slay | vaidyam: a physician | upāya kuśalam: skilled in ways and means of aggravating a disease | bhṛtyu samdūṣaṇe ratam: a servant intent on bringing disgrace | śūram: and a valiant warrior | aiśvarya kāmam ca: seeking kingly power | saḥ: he (himself) | hanyate: is slain. |

TRANSLATION

"He, who does not slay a physician skilled in ways and means of aggravating a disease, a servant intent on bringing disgrace and a valiant warrior seeking kingly power, is *himself) slain by them."

VERSE 30

कच्चिद्द् हृष्टः च शूरः च धृतिमान् मतिमान् शुचिः
कुलीनः च अनुरक्तः च दक्षः सेना पतिः कृतः

kaccidd hṛṣṭaḥ ca śūraḥ ca dhṛtimān matimān śuciḥ
kulīnaḥ ca anuraktaḥ ca dakṣaḥ senā patiḥ kṛtaḥ

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope | senāpatiḥ: an army-chief | hṛṣṭaśca: who is happy man | śūraśca: a valiant man | matimān: a wise man | dhṛtimān: a courageous man | śuciḥ: of good conduct | kulīnaśca: one who is born in a good family | anuraktaśca: who is beloved by his subordinates | dakṣaḥ: and one who is efficient | kṛtaḥ: is selected. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope an army-chief, who is cheerful, wise, courageous, valiant, well-behaved, born in a good family, who is beloved by his subordinates and efficient, is selected by you."

VERSE 31

बलवन्तः च कच्चित् ते मुख्या युद्ध विशारदाः
दृष्ट अपदाना विक्रान्ताः त्वया सत्कृत्य मानिताः

balavantaḥ ca kaccit te mukhyā yuddha viśāradāḥ
dṛṣṭa apadānā vikrāntāḥ tvayā satkṛtya mānitāḥ

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope | te: those | mukhyāḥ: important warriors | belaventaḥ: who are exceedingly strong | yuddhaviśāradāḥ: skilled in war-fare | dṛṣṭāpadānā: whose excellent actions were seen before | vikrāntāḥ: and the most courageous men honoured | mānitāḥ: and respected | tvayā: by you. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope those warriors, who are excellent strong, skilled in war-face, whose excellent actions were seen before and the most courageous ones are duly honoured and respected by you."

VERSE 32

कचिद् बलस्य भक्तम् च वेतनम् च यथा उचितम्
सम्प्राप्त कालम् दातव्यम् ददासि न विलम्बसे

kacid balasya bhaktam ca vetanam ca yathā ucitam
samprāpta kālam dātavyam dadāsi na vilambase

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope | samprāpta kālam: at the proper time | dadāsi: you are giving | balasya: your army | bhaktam ca: the daily provisions | dātavyam: to be given | yathocitam: and suitable | vetanamca: salary | na vilambase: without any delay. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope you are regularly giving your army, the daily provisions and the suitable salary to them, without any delay."

VERSE 33

काल अतिक्रमणे ह्य् एव भक्त वेतनयोर् भृताः
भर्तुः कुप्यन्ति दुष्यन्ति सो अनर्थः सुमहान् स्मृतः

kāla atikramaṇe hy eva bhakta vetanayor bhṛtāḥ
bhartuḥ kupyanti duṣyanti so anarthaḥ sumahān smṛtaḥ

SYNONYMS

kālātikramaṇāt: (when) there is delay | bhaktavetanayoḥ: in giving bread and wages | bhṛtāḥ: the servants | kupyanti: become incensed | bhartuḥ: against their master | duṣyanti: and become corrupt | saḥ: (and) that | smṛtāḥ: is said to be | sumahān: a great | anarthaḥ: unfortunate occurrence. |

TRANSLATION

"When there is delay in giving bread and wages, the servants become incensed against their master and become corrupt; and that is said to be a great unfortunate occurrence."

VERSE 34

कच्चित् सर्वे अनुरक्ताः त्वाम् कुल पुत्राः प्रधानतः
कच्चित् प्राणाम्ः तव अर्थेषु सम्त्यजन्ति समाहिताः

kaccit sarve anuraktāḥ tvām kula putrāḥ pradhānataḥ
kaccit prāṇāmḥ tava artheṣu samtyajanti samāhitāḥ

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope | sarve: all | pradhānataḥ: the foremost | kulaputrāḥ: descendents of your race (kshatriyas) | anuraktāḥ: are devoted | tvām: to you | kaccit santyajanti: (and) do they lay down | prāṇān: their lives | tava artheṣu: for your sake | samāhitāḥ: steadfastly? |

TRANSLATION

"I hope all the foremost descendents of your race (kshatriyas) are devoted to you and do they lay down their lives steadfastly for your sake?"

VERSE 35

कच्चिज् जानपदो विद्वान् दक्षिणः प्रतिभानवान्
यथा उक्त वादी दूतः ते कृतो भरत पण्डितः

kaccij jānapado vidvān dakṣiṇaḥ pratibhānavān
yathā ukta vādī dūtaḥ te kṛto bharata paṇḍitaḥ

TRANSLATION

"I hope that a knowledgeable man, living in your own country, a wise man a skilled person endowed with presence of mind and the one who knows how to speak to the point, is selected as an ambassador by you."

VERSE 36

कच्चिद् अष्टादशान्य् एषु स्व पक्षे दश पन्च च
त्रिभिः त्रिभिर् अविज्नातैर् वेत्सि तीर्थानि चारकैः

kaccid aṣṭādaśāny eṣu sva pakṣe daśa panca ca
tribhiḥ tribhir avijnātair vetsi tīrthāni cārakaiḥ

vetsi katsit: do you get to know | tribhiḥ tribhiḥ: through three | cārakaiḥ: spies | avij^ṇātaiḥ: each unacquainted with each other | aṣṭādaśa: the eighteen* | tīrthāni: functionaries | anyeṣu: of the enemies | daśa paṅca ca: and the fifteen functionaries | svapakṣe: of your own side? |

TRANSLATION

"Do you get to know throught three spies, each unacquainted with each other, about the eighteen* functionaries of the enemies and the fifteen functionaries of your own side?"

PURPORT

*They are: 1)the chief minister; 2) the king's family priest; 3)the crown prince; 4)the leader of the army; 5) the chief warder; 6) the chamberlain (antaHpuraaH adhyaksha); 7)the superintendent of gails (kaaraagaara adhyaksha); 8) the chancellor of the exchequer; 9)the herald; 10)the government advocate; 11) the judge; 12)the assessor; 13) the officer disbursing salaries to army men; 14) the officer drawing money from the state exchequer to disburse the workmen's wages; 15) the superintended of public works; 16) the protector of the borders of a kingdom, who also performed the duties of a forester; 17) the magistrate; 18) the officer entrusted with conservation of waters; hills, forests and tracts difficult of access.: The fifteen functionaries of one's own side are the last fifteen of this very list, omitting the first three; viz; the chief ministers, the family priest and the crown prince.
VERSE 37

कच्चिद् व्यपास्तान् अहितान् प्रतियाताम्ः च सर्वदा
दुर्बलान् अनवज्नाय वर्तसे रिपु सूदन

kaccid vyapāstān ahitān pratiyātāmḥ ca sarvadā
durbalān anavajnāya vartase ripu sūdana

SYNONYMS

ripusūdada: O | kaccit: I hope | vartase: you stay | sarvadā: forever | anavajṇāya: not thinking lightly | ahitān: of your foes | durbalān: who are weak | vyapāstān: and having been expelled | pratiyātāmśca: return again to revenge. |

TRANSLATION

"O, slayer of your Foes! I hope you do not forever think lightly of your foes, who are weak and having been expelled, return again."

VERSE 38

कच्चिन् न लोकायतिकान् ब्राह्मणाम्ः तात सेवसे
अनर्थ कुशला ह्य् एते बालाः पण्डित मानिनः

kaccin na lokāyatikān brāhmaṇāmḥ tāta sevase
anartha kuśalā hy ete bālāḥ paṇḍita māninaḥ

kaccit: I hope | no sevasa: you are not honouring | lokāyatikān: the materialistic | brāhmaṇān: brahmins | tāta: my darling! | ete: these men | anarthakuśalāḥ hi: are skilled in perverting the mind | bālāḥ: ignorant | paṅḍita māninaḥ: and thinking themselves to be learned. |

TRANSLATION

I hope are not honouring the materialistic brahmins, My dear brother! These men are skilled in perverting the mind, ignorant as they are and thinking themselves to be learned."

VERSE 39

धर्म शास्त्रेषु मुख्येषु विद्यमानेषु दुर्बुधाः
बुद्धिमान् वीक्षिकीम् प्राप्य निरर्थम् प्रवदन्ति ते

dharma śāstreṣu mukhyeṣu vidyamāneṣu durbudhāḥ
buddhimān vīkṣikīm prāpya nirartham pravadanti te

SYNONYMS

prāpya: reaching to | anvīkṣakīm: their logical | buddhim: aeumen | durbudhāḥ: these men of perverted intellect | pravadanti: speak | nirartham: bereft of meaning | vidyamāneṣu: in the presence of | mukhyeṣu: eminent | dharma śāstreṣu: books on righteousness. |

TRANSLATION

"Reaching to their logical acumen, these men of perverted intellect preach meaninglessly, in the presence of eminent books on righteousness."

VERSE 40

वीरैर् अध्युषिताम् पूर्वम् अस्माकम् तात पूर्वकैः
सत्य नामाम् दृढ द्वाराम् हस्त्य् अश्व रथ सम्कुलाम्

vīrair adhyuṣitām pūrvam asmākam tāta pūrvakaiḥ
satya nāmām dṛḍha dvārām hasty aśva ratha samkulām

TRANSLATION

"I hope you preserve the City of Ayodhya, furnished with everything and flourishing, that was formerly inhabited by our heroic ancestors, O my dear brother, that is worthy of its name, with its fortified gates, its elephant horses and chariots that fill it, with its brahmins, warriors and merchants in thousands, ever engaged in their respective duties, with its noble citizens self-controlled and full of energy, with its palaces in various shapes and the learned who abound there."

VERSE 43

कच्चिच् चैत्य शतैर् जुष्टः सुनिविष्ट जन आकुलः
देव स्थानैः प्रपाभिः च तडागैः च उपशोभितः

kaccic caitya śatair juṣṭaḥ suniviṣṭa jana ākulaḥ
deva sthānaiḥ prapābhiḥ ca taḍāgaiḥ ca upaśobhitaḥ

TRANSLATION

I hope that the kingdom, adorned with peaceful places rich in temples and sheds where water stored for distribution to passers-by in tanks, with happy men and women, graced by social festivities, with land well-tilled, abiding in cattle which are totally free from cruelties, the agricultural land not exclusively fed by rains, which is beautiful and is purged of beasts of prey, which is completely rid of fears, studded with mines, a destitute of sinful men, and well-protected by our fore-fathers, is prosperous and an abode of happiness.

VERSE 47

कच्चित् ते दयिताः सर्वे कृषि गो रक्ष जीविनः
वार्तायाम् संश्रितः तात लोको हि सुखम् एधते

kaccit te dayitāḥ sarve kṛṣi go rakṣa jīvinaḥ
vārtāyām saṃśritaḥ tāta loko hi sukham edhate

SYNONYMS

te dayitāḥ kaccit: are you cherishing | sarve: all | kṛṣigorakṣa jīvinaḥ: those who live by agriculture and cattle-rearing | tāta: O | lokaḥ: the people | samśritaḥ: living | vārtāyām: on agriculture and cattle-rearing | edhate hi: indeed prosper | sukham: well. |

TRANSLATION

"Are you cherishing all those who live by agriculture and cattle-rearing, O, dear borhter! The people living on agriculture and cattle-rearing indeed prosper well."

VERSE 48

तेषाम् गुप्ति परीहारैः कच्चित् ते भरणम् कृतम्
रक्ष्या हि राज्ना धर्मेण सर्वे विषय वासिनः

teṣām gupti parīhāraiḥ kaccit te bharaṇam kṛtam
rakṣyā hi rājnā dharmeṇa sarve viṣaya vāsinaḥ

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope | teṣām: their | bharaṇam: maintenance | kṛtam: is being looked after | te: by you | bhukti parīhāraiḥ: by providing what they need and eschewing what they fear | sarve: All | viṣaya rāsinaḥ: the citizens | rakṣyāḥ hi: are indeed to be protected | dharmeṇa: through righteousness | rājṇā: by a king. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope their maintenance is being looked after by you, in providing what they need and eschewing what they fear. All the citizens are indeed to be protected by a king through his righteousness."

VERSE 49

कच्चित् स्त्रियः सान्त्वयसि कच्चित् ताः च सुरक्षिताः
कच्चिन् न श्रद्दधास्य आसाम् कच्चिद् गुह्यम् न भाषसे

kaccit striyaḥ sāntvayasi kaccit tāḥ ca surakṣitāḥ
kaccin na śraddadhāsya āsām kaccid guhyam na bhāṣase

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope | sāntvayasi: you are receiving well | striyaḥ: the women | te surakṣitāḥ kaccit: are they protected te = by you? | na śraddhadhāsi: you are not believing | āsām: the words of these women | na bhāṣase kaccit: and not telling | guhyam: secrets. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope you are pacifying the women well. Are they protected by you? I hope you are not believing the words of these women and not telling them the secrets."

VERSE 50

कच्चिन्नागवनं गुप्तं कच्चित्ते सन्ति धेनुकाः
कचिन्न गणिकाश्वानां कुञ्जराणां च तृप्यसि

kaccinnāgavanaṃ guptaṃ kaccitte santi dhenukāḥ
kacinna gaṇikāśvānāṃ kuñjarāṇāṃ ca tṛpyasi

SYNONYMS

guptam kaccit: are you supervising | nāga vanam: the woods inhabited by elephatns? kachchit = I hope | dhenukāḥ: female elephants | santi: are there | te: to you | kaccit: I hope | na tṛpyasi: you are not simply satisfied | kuṇjarāṇām ca: and male-elephants. |

TRANSLATION

"Are you supervising the woods inhabited by elephants? I hope female elephants are there to you in good number. I hope you are not simply satisfied with the existing population of female elephants, horses and male-elephants."

VERSE 51

कच्चिद् दर्शयसे नित्यम् मनुष्याणाम् विभूषितम्
उत्थाय उत्थाय पूर्व अह्णे राज पुत्रो महा पथे

kaccid darśayase nityam manuṣyāṇām vibhūṣitam
utthāya utthāya pūrva ahṇe rāja putro mahā pathe

SYNONYMS

rājaputra: O | kacit: I hope you | vibhūṣitam: regally adorned | darśayate: appear | manuṣāṇām: before the people | utthāyotthāya: on rising | nityam: everyday | pūrvāhṇe: in the forenoon | mahāpathe: on the great high way. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Prince! Do you, regally adorned, appear before the people on rising each morning, on the great high way?"

VERSE 52

कच्चिन्न सर्वे कर्मान्ताः प्रत्यक्षास्ते।अविशङ्कया
सर्वे वा पुनरुत्सृष्टा मध्यमे वात्र कारणम् २१००५२

kaccinna sarve karmāntāḥ pratyakṣāste|aviśaṅkayā
sarve vā punarutsṛṣṭā madhyame vātra kāraṇam 2-100-52

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope | sarve: do all of them | karmantāḥ: your servants | te pratyakṣāḥ: in your presence | na aviśaṇkayā: do not adopt a disrespectful attitude | vā punaḥ: or on the other hand | utsṛṣṭāḥ: hasten away (on seeing you)? (of course) | madhyameva: a middle course only | kāraṇam: the principle | atra: in this matter. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope that all your servants, in your presence, do not adopt a disrespectful attitude or on the other hand all of them do not hasten away on seeing you. Ofcourse, a middle course only in the principle to be followed in this matter."

VERSE 53

कच्चित् सर्वाणि दुर्गाणि धन धान्य आयुध उदकैः
यन्त्रैः च परिपूर्णानि तथा शिल्पि धनुर् धरैः

kaccit sarvāṇi durgāṇi dhana dhānya āyudha udakaiḥ
yantraiḥ ca paripūrṇāni tathā śilpi dhanur dharaiḥ

SYNONYMS

kacicit: I hope | sarvāṇi: the entire | durgāṇi: citadels | paripūrṇāni: are quite full | dhana dhānyāyudhodakaiḥ: of money | yantraiśca: and mechanical countrivances | tathā: as well as | śilpi dhanurdharaiḥ: artisans and archers. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope all your citadels are quite full of money, grain, weapons, water and mechanical contrivances as well as artisans and archers."

VERSE 54

आयः ते विपुलः कच्चित् कच्चिद् अल्पतरो व्ययः
अपात्रेषु न ते कच्चित् कोशो गग्च्छति राघव

āyaḥ te vipulaḥ kaccit kaccid alpataro vyayaḥ
apātreṣu na te kaccit kośo gagcchati rāghava

SYNONYMS

rāghava: O | Bharata! kaccit: I hope | te: your | āyaḥ: income | vipulaḥ: is abundant | kaccit: I hope | vyayaḥ: expenditure | alpataraḥ: is minimum | kośaḥ: treasure | nagacchati: does not reach | apātreṣu: undeserving people |

TRANSLATION

"I hope your income is abundant and expenditure, minimum. I hope your treasure does not reach undeserving people, O, Bharata!"

VERSE 55

देवता अर्थे च पित्र् अर्थे ब्राह्मण अभ्यागतेषु च
योधेषु मित्र वर्गेषु कच्चिद् गग्च्छति ते व्ययः

devatā arthe ca pitr arthe brāhmaṇa abhyāgateṣu ca
yodheṣu mitra vargeṣu kaccid gagcchati te vyayaḥ

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope that | te: your | vyayaḥ: expenditure | gacchati: goes | devatārtha ca: for the cause of divinity | pitrarthe: for manes | brahmaṇa abhyāgateṣu ca: for brahmins and unexpected visitors | yodheṣu: soldiers | mitra vargeṣu: and hosts of friends. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope that your expenditure goes for the cause of divinity, manes, brahmins, unexpected visitors, soldiers and hosts of friends."

VERSE 56

कच्चिद् आर्यो विशुद्ध आत्मा क्षारितः चोर कर्मणा
अपृष्टः शास्त्र कुशलैर् न लोभाद् बध्यते शुचिः

kaccid āryo viśuddha ātmā kṣāritaḥ cora karmaṇā
apṛṣṭaḥ śāstra kuśalair na lobhād badhyate śuciḥ

SYNONYMS

viśuddhātmā: despite his honesty | śuciḥ: and integrity | kṣāritaḥ: is falsely accused | apakarmaṇā: of some offence | accit: I hope | na vadhyate: he is not is killed lobhaat = impatiently | apṛṣṭah: without enquiry | śāstra kuśalaiḥ: by those well-versed in law-books. |

TRANSLATION

"If one of noble work, despite his honesty and integrity, is falsely accused of some offence, I hope he is not killed impatiently, without enquiry by those well-versed in law-books."

VERSE 57

गृहीतः चैव पृष्टः च काले दृष्टः सकारणः
कच्चिन् न मुच्यते चोरो धन लोभान् नर ऋषभ

gṛhītaḥ caiva pṛṣṭaḥ ca kāle dṛṣṭaḥ sakāraṇaḥ
kaccin na mucyate coro dhana lobhān nara ṛṣabha

SYNONYMS

nararṣabha: O | coraḥ: (If) a thief | dṛṣṭaḥ: is seen | gṛhītaścaiva: and even caught | kāle: at the time of his act | sakāraṇaḥ: on sufficient ground | pṛṣṭaśca: and interrogated | na mucyate kaccit: I hope he is not released | dhana lobhāt: from greed o wealth. |

TRANSLATION

"O, foremost of men! If a thief is seen and even caught at the time of his act on sufficient ground and interrogated-I hope, he is not released from greed of wealth."

VERSE 58

व्यसने कच्चिद् आढ्यस्य दुगतस्य च राघव
अर्थम् विरागाः पश्यन्ति तव अमात्या बहु श्रुताः

vyasane kaccid āḍhyasya dugatasya ca rāghava
artham virāgāḥ paśyanti tava amātyā bahu śrutāḥ

SYNONYMS

rāghava: O | kacicit: I hope that | tava: you | bahuśrutāḥ: well-educated | amātyāḥ: ministers | paśyanti: examine | artham: a case | virāgāḥ: dispassionately | vyasane: in a contention | āḍhyasya: between a rich man | durgatasya ca: and a poor man |

TRANSLATION

"O, Bharata! I hope that your well-educated ministers examine a case dispassionately when a contention occurs between a rich man and a poor man, after studying the situation carefully."

VERSE 59

यानि मिथ्या अभिशस्तानाम् पतन्त्य् अस्राणि राघव
तानि पुत्र पशून् घ्नन्ति प्रीत्य् अर्थम् अनुशासतः

yāni mithyā abhiśastānām patanty asrāṇi rāghava
tāni putra paśūn ghnanti prīty artham anuśāsataḥ

SYNONYMS

aśrūṇi: the tears | patanti: fallen | yāni: from those who | mithyābhiśastānām: are the victims of false accusations | rāgha: O | tāni: they | ghnanti: destroy | putra paśūn: their sons and herds | anuśāsataḥ: of those who are indifferent to justice | prītyartham: merely for the sake of pleasure. |

TRANSLATION

"The tears fallen from those who are the victims of false accusations, O Bharata, destroy their sons and herds of those who are indifferent to justice, merely for the sake of pleasure."

VERSE 60

कच्चिद् वृधाम्ः च बालाम्ः च वैद्य मुख्याम्ः च राघव
दानेन मनसा वाचा त्रिभिर् एतैर् बुभूषसे

kaccid vṛdhāmḥ ca bālāmḥ ca vaidya mukhyāmḥ ca rāghava
dānena manasā vācā tribhir etair bubhūṣase

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope that | bubhūṣate: you seek to conciliate | eteḥ: by the following | tribhiḥ: three means | dānena: by gifts | manasā: a (loving) mind | vācā: and (polite) words | vṛddhāmśca: teh aged | bālamśca: the children | vaidya mukhyāmśca: and the foremost physicians. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope that you seek to conciliate by the following three means, viz. gifts, a loving mind and polite words- the aged, the children and the foremost physicians."

VERSE 61

कच्चिद् गुरूम्ः च वृद्धाम्ः च तापसान् देवता अतिथीन्
चैत्याम्ः च सर्वान् सिद्ध अर्थान् ब्राह्मणाम्ः च नमस्यसि

kaccid gurūmḥ ca vṛddhāmḥ ca tāpasān devatā atithīn
caityāmḥ ca sarvān siddha arthān brāhmaṇāmḥ ca namasyasi

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope | mamasyasi: you greet | gurūśca: your teachers | vṛddhāmśca: the elderly | tāpasān: the ascetics | devatātithīn: the deities and unexpected visitors | caityāmśca: as well as the trees standing at cross roads | sarvān: and all | brāhmaṇāmśca: the brahmins | siddhārthān: of auspicious life and conduct. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope you greet your teachers, the elderly, the ascetics, the deities; the unexpected visitors, the trees standing at cross roads and all the brahmins of auspicious life and conduct."

VERSE 62

कच्चिद् अर्थेन वा धर्मम् धर्मम् धर्मेण वा पुनः
उभौ वा प्रीति लोभेन कामेन न विबाधसे

kaccid arthena vā dharmam dharmam dharmeṇa vā punaḥ
ubhau vā prīti lobhena kāmena na vibādhase

SYNONYMS

kaccit: i hope | na bādhase: you do not abrogate | dharmam vā: virtue | arthe: (by your excessive devotion) to wealth | arthamvā punaḥ: or your earthly interests | dharmeṇa: by (your over emphasis on) religion | ubhau: or both your religious and secular interests | prīti lobhena: by your self-indulgence in pleasure greed | kāmena: and gratification of the senses. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope you do not abrogate virtue by your excessive devotion to wealth or your excessive devotion to wealth or your earthly interests by your over-emphasis on religion or both your religious and secular interests by your self-indulgence in pleasure, greed and gratification of the senses."

VERSE 63

कच्चिद् अर्थम् च धर्मम् च कामम् च जयताम् वर
विभज्य काले कालज्न सर्वान् भरत सेवसे

kaccid artham ca dharmam ca kāmam ca jayatām vara
vibhajya kāle kālajna sarvān bharata sevase

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope | sevasa: you pursue | artham ca: wealth | dharmam ca: religion | kāmamca: and the delights of the sense | sarve: all | vibhajya: dividing them | kāle: according to time | vara: O | jayatām: among the victorious! | kālajṇa: O | varada: and O |

TRANSLATION

"I hope your pursue wealth, religion and the delights of the sense dividing them all according to time, O Jewel among the victorious, the one who is conversant with the proper time and O, the bestower of boons!"

VERSE 64

कच्चित् ते ब्राह्मणाः शर्म सर्व शास्त्र अर्थ कोविदः
आशंसन्ते महा प्राज्न पौर जानपदैः सह

kaccit te brāhmaṇāḥ śarma sarva śāstra artha kovidaḥ
āśaṃsante mahā prājna paura jānapadaiḥ saha

SYNONYMS

mahā prājṇa: O | the one vho is endoved vith great visdom! brāhmaṇāḥ kaccit: I hope that brahmins | sarva śāstrārtha kovidāḥ: versed in the tradition of all the scriptures | paura jāna padaissaha: and the inhabitants of town and country | āśansante: pray | te: for your | śarma: happiness. |

TRANSLATION

"O, the one who is endowed with great wisdom! I hope that brahmins versed in the knowledge of the scriptures, the inhabitants of town and the country pray for your happiness."

VERSE 65

नास्तिक्यम् अनृतम् क्रोधम् प्रमादम् दीर्घ सूत्रताम्
अदर्शनम् ज्नानवताम् आलस्यम् पन्च वृत्तिताम्

nāstikyam anṛtam krodham pramādam dīrgha sūtratām
adarśanam jnānavatām ālasyam panca vṛttitām

TRANSLATION

Do you eschew the following fourteen for of kings -viz. atheism, falsehood, anger carelessness, procrastination, disregard of the wise, sloth, bondage to the five senses, himself alone devoting thought to the affairs of the state (without consulting the ministers); taking counsel with those of perverted insight; failure to undertake the projects already decided, failure to keep secrets, failure to utter auspicious words (at the beginning of an undertaking); and rising from one's seat (indiscriminately) to receive all.

VERSE 68

दशपंचचतुर्वर्गान् सप्तवर्गं च तत्त्वतः
अष्टवर्गम् त्रिवर्गं च विद्यास्तिस्रश्च राघव २१००६८
इन्द्न्द्रियाणां जयं बुद्ध्यं षाड्गुण्यं दैवमानुषम्
कृत्यं विंशतिवर्गं च तथा प्रकृतिमण्डलं

daśapaṃcacaturvargān saptavargaṃ ca tattvataḥ
aṣṭavargam trivargaṃ ca vidyāstisraśca rāghava 2-100-68
indndriyāṇāṃ jayaṃ buddhyaṃ ṣāḍguṇyaṃ daivamānuṣam
kṛtyaṃ viṃśativargaṃ ca tathā prakṛtimaṇḍalaṃ

TRANSLATION

"O, the very wise Bharata! I hope you understand the following and deal them properly the ten evils(1); the five kinds of fortifications(2); the four expedients(3); the seven limbs of state(4); the eight evils (born of anger) the three objects of human pursuit(5); the three branches of learning(6) subjugation of the senses, the six strategic expedients(7); adversity brought about by divine agencies(8); and by human agencies(9); the twenty types of monarches(10); and the entire population of the kingdom, setting about an an expedition, drawing up an army in a battle-array and the two bases viz, peace and war.

PURPORT

(1). Ten evils attendant on royalty to be eschew. Hunting, gambling, sleeping during the day, lustfulness, inebriation, pride, calumny, lounging about idly or aimlessly, diversions such as singing and dancing. (2). Five kinds of fortifications: By moat, high bank, trees thickly planted, a space destitute of grain or provisions, the turning of waters. (3) Four expedients:- Making peace, liberality, sowing dissension, chastisement. (4) Seven limbs of state king, ministers, friends, treasure, territory, forts and an army. (5) Three objects of human pursuit: Religious merit, material wealth and sensuous enjoyment or the three kinds of power (viz. energy, power of dominion, power of counsel) (6) Three branches of learning: the three Vedas, the knowledge relating to agriculture, commerce and other vocational pursuits and political science. (7) Six strategic expedients: Coming to terms with the enemy, waging war against him, marching against him, biding one's time to seek a favourable opportunity, causing dissension in the enemy's ranks, seeking protection of a powerful ally. (8) Adversity brought about by divine agencies: Fire, water in the shape of excessive rains or floods, epidemic or endemic diseases, famine and pestulence, earthquakes and Tsunamis. (9) Adversity brought about by human agencies: officials, thieves, enemies, king's favourites and king himself, when acutated by greed. (10)Twenty types of monarchs (who are not worth-negotiating with):1. a king who is yet a child. 2. Aged. 3. Who has been ailing for a long time. 4. who has been ostracised by his own kith and kin. 5. ho is characterized by a cowardly attitude. 6. who is surrounded by cowards. 7. who is greedy. 8. has greedy associated. 9. who has estranged his ministers and others. 10. who confers with fickle-minded persons 11. who speaks ill of divine begins and brahmins; 12. who is extremely indulged in sensuous pleasures and luxuries; 13. who is ill-fated; 14. a fatalist (who believes that all things are pre-determined or subject to fate); 15. who is afflicted by famine and; 16. by military reverses; 17. who (mostly) remains away from home; 18. who has numerous enemies; 19. who is in the clutches of adverse times and; 20. who is not devoted to truth and piety.
VERSE 71

मन्त्रिभिस्त्वं यथोद्दिष्टैश्चतुर्भिस्त्रिभिरेव वा
कच्चित्समस्तैर्व्यस्तैश्च मन्त्रं मन्त्रयसे मिथः

mantribhistvaṃ yathoddiṣṭaiścaturbhistribhireva vā
kaccitsamastairvyastaiśca mantraṃ mantrayase mithaḥ

SYNONYMS

kaccit: I hope that | tvam: you | mantrayate: consult with | caturbhiḥ: four | tribhireva vā: or three | mantribhiḥ: ministers | mantram: a proposal yathoddiSTaiH = as mentioned in scriptures | samastaiḥ: collectively | vyastaiśca: and singly | mithaḥ: in secret |

TRANSLATION

"I hope that you consult with three or four ministers as mentioned in scriptures any proposal collectively and singly with each of them in secret."

VERSE 72

कच्चित्ते सफला वेदाः कच्चित्ते सफलाः क्रियाः
कच्चित्ते सफला दाराः कच्चित्ते सफलं श्रुतम्

kaccitte saphalā vedāḥ kaccitte saphalāḥ kriyāḥ
kaccitte saphalā dārāḥ kaccitte saphalaṃ śrutam

SYNONYMS

saphalāḥ kaccit: do you benefit | te: in you | vedāḥ: study of Vedas? | kaccit te kriyāḥ: are your acts | saphalāḥ: productive of fair results? | te dārāḥ: from the company of your consorts?' te shrutam kachchit = Has your learning | saphalam: been fruitful? |

TRANSLATION

"Do you find advantages in your study of Vedas? Are your acts, production of fair results? Do you benefit from the company of your consorts? Has your learning been fruitful?"

VERSE 73

कच्चिदेषैव ते बुद्धिर्यथोक्ता मम राघा
आयुष्या च यशस्या च धर्मकामार्थसंहिता

kaccideṣaiva te buddhiryathoktā mama rāghā
āyuṣyā ca yaśasyā ca dharmakāmārthasaṃhitā

SYNONYMS

rāghava: O | kaccit: I hope that | te buddhiḥ: your conviction | eṣaiva: is the same | yathā uktā: as mentioned (in the foregoing verses) mama = by me | samhitā: which is conducive | āyuṣyā: to long life | yaśasyāca: fame | dharma kāmārtha: religious merit |

TRANSLATION

"O, Bharata! I hope that your conviction, is the same as mentioned by me in the foregoing verses, which is conducive to long life, fame, religious merit, enjoyment and wealth."

VERSE 74

यां वृत्तिं वर्तते रातो यां चनः प्रपितामहाः
तां वृत्तिं वर्तसे कच्चिद्याच सत्पथगा शुभा २१००७४

yāṃ vṛttiṃ vartate rāto yāṃ canaḥ prapitāmahāḥ
tāṃ vṛttiṃ vartase kaccidyāca satpathagā śubhā 2-100-74

SYNONYMS

vartase kaccit: Do you follow | tām: that | vṛttam: common practice | yām: and which | tātaḥ: our fore father | vartate: follows | naḥ: our | prapitāmahāḥ: forefathers observed | yāca: and which | satpathagā: is in accord with the path of the virtuous | śubhā: and which is distinguished (in itself). |

TRANSLATION

"Do you follow the common practice, which our fore fathers observed and which is in accord with the path of the virtuous and which is distinguished in itself."

VERSE 75

कच्चित् स्वादु कृतं भोज्यमेको नाश्नासि राघव
कच्चिदाशंसमानेभ्यो मित्रेभ्यः सम्प्रयच्छसि २१००७५

kaccit svādu kṛtaṃ bhojyameko nāśnāsi rāghava
kaccidāśaṃsamānebhyo mitrebhyaḥ samprayacchasi 2-100-75

SYNONYMS

rāghava: O Bharata! | kaccit: I hope that | ekaḥ nāśnāpi kascit: you alone do not eat | svādukṛtam: nicely made | bhojyam: eatable | samprayaccasi: and do you give (it) | mitrebhyaḥ: to your friends | āśam samānebhyaḥ: who wish to receive the same. |

TRANSLATION

"I hope you do not eat by yourself nicely made eatable and do you share it with your friends, who seek it?"

VERSE 76

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे शततमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye ayodhyākāṇḍe śatatamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

rājātu: A king | mahā matiḥ: who is very wise | vidvān: and learned | avāpya: having obtained | kṛtsnām: the entire | vasudhām: earth | daṅḍadharaḥ: a administering justice | prajānām: to the people | pālayitvā: and having ruled | dharmeṇa: by righteousness | yathāvat: properly | cyutaḥ: when detached | itaḥ: from this mortal body | upaitihi: and indeed obtains | svargam: heaven. |

TRANSLATION

"A wise and learned king, having obtained and ruled the entire earth, properly by righteousness and by administering justice to the people, indeed ascends to heaven when detached from the mortal body."
