VERSE 1

इति ब्रुवति रामे तु लक्ष्मणो अधः शिरा मुहुः
श्रुत्वा मध्यम् जगाम इव मनसा दुह्ख हर्षयोह्

iti bruvati rāme tu lakṣmaṇo adhaḥ śirā muhuḥ
śrutvā madhyam jagāma iva manasā duhkha harṣayoh

SYNONYMS

rāme: Rama | iti: thus | brutvati: speading | lakṣmanaḥ: Lakshmana | śrutvā: heard | adhaḥśśrirāḥ: having his head bowed down | jagameva: quite so got | madhyam: nto midst | duḥkha harṣayaḥ: of pain and pleasure | muhuḥ: again and again | manasā: effecting mind. |

TRANSLATION

While Rama was thus speeding, Lakshmana heard, bowed down his head and got into the midst of pain and pleasure effecting his mind again and again.

VERSE 2

तदा तु बद्ध्वा भ्रुकुटीम् भ्रुवोर् मध्ये नर ऋषभ
निशश्वास महा सर्पो बिलस्यैव रोषितः

tadā tu baddhvā bhrukuṭīm bhruvor madhye nara ṛṣabha
niśaśvāsa mahā sarpo bilasyaiva roṣitaḥ

SYNONYMS

naraṣabhaḥ: Lakshmana | tadāta tu: then | baddhvā: firmed up | bhrukutīm: contraction of brows | madhye: in the middle | bhruvoḥ: of eyebrows | niśaśvāsa: sighed | mahāsarpaḥ iva: like great snake | roṣitaḥ: in anger | bilasthaḥ: staying in hole. |

TRANSLATION

Lakshmana then firmed up his eyebrows and sighed with frown, like an angry snake from its hole.

VERSE 3

तस्य दुष्प्रतिवीक्ष्यम् तत् भ्रुकुटी सहितम् तदा
बभौ क्रुद्धस्य सिम्हस्य मुखस्य सदृशम् मुखम्

tasya duṣprativīkṣyam tat bhrukuṭī sahitam tadā
babhau kruddhasya simhasya mukhasya sadṛśam mukham

SYNONYMS

tad: that | tasya: his | duṣprativīkṣam: wickedly looking | mukham: face | bhrukutīsahitam: with contracted eyebrows | tadā: then | babhau: shined | sadruśam: like | kṛddhasya: angry | simhasya: lion. |

TRANSLATION

His wickedly looking face with eyebrows contracted, then appeared like the face of an angry lion.

VERSE 4

अग्रहः तम् विधुन्वंस् तु हस्ती हस्तम् इवात्मनः
तिर्यग् ऊर्ध्वम् शरीरे च पातयित्वा शिरः धराम्

agrahaḥ tam vidhunvaṃs tu hastī hastam ivātmanaḥ
tiryag ūrdhvam śarīre ca pātayitvā śiraḥ dharām

SYNONYMS

vīkṣamāṇaḥ: seeing | bhrātaram: brother Rama | agrākṣṇā: with tip of eyes | tiryak: obliquely | abravīt: (he) spoke | vidhūnvan: moving | agrahastam: forehand | ātmanaḥ hastamiva: like its trunk | hastī: the elephant | pātayitvā: causing to fall | sirodharāam: the neck | śarīre: in the body | ūrdhvamca: and upwardly. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing Rama with the tip of his eyes obliquely, Lakshmana spoke to him moving his forehand like an elephant moving its trunk and causing his head to fall in oblique and upward direction.

VERSE 5

अस्थाने सम्भ्रमः यस्य जातः वै सुमहान् अयम्

asthāne sambhramaḥ yasya jātaḥ vai sumahān ayam

SYNONYMS

6| śauṇdīrakṣatriyarṣabha: oh | the best of proud military community! ayam: this | sumahān: very great | sambhramaḥ: confusion | asthāne: which is untimely | jātaḥvai: born | yasya: in you | dharma doṣa prasangena: the subject of guilty righteousness | anatiśaṇkayā: non suspicion | lokasya: of the world | katham: how | tvadvidhaḥ: such a person like you | arhati: is able | vaktum: to speak | etat: this | yathā: in which way | daivam: about destiny | aśauṇdīnam: which is powerless. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, the best of proud military community! This untimely great confusion is born in you due to your conjecture of quilty righteousness and of non suspicion of the world. Can such a person like you speak a person like you speak thus doubtlessly of the powerless destiny?"

VERSE 7

किम् नाम कृपणम् दैवम् अशक्तम् अभिशंसति
पापयोस् तु कथम् नाम तयोह् शन्का न विद्यते

kim nāma kṛpaṇam daivam aśaktam abhiśaṃsati
pāpayos tu katham nāma tayoh śankā na vidyate

SYNONYMS

kimnām: why | abhiśamsasi: are you praising | daivam: destiney | kṛpaṇam: which is pitiable | aśaktam: which is weak? katham naama = how | navidyati: not | śaṇkā: doubtful | te: to you | tayoḥ: in both of them | pāpayoḥ: who are sinful? |

TRANSLATION

"Why are you speaking about this weak and pitiable destiny? Why are you not doubting the sinful Kaikeyi and Dasaratha?"

VERSE 8

सन्ति धर्म उपधाः श्लक्ष्णा धर्मात्मन् किम् न बुध्यसे

santi dharma upadhāḥ ślakṣṇā dharmātman kim na budhyase

SYNONYMS

dharmātman: Oh | the righteous soul! tayoḥ: both of their | ślakṣṇāḥ: smooth | dharmopadhāḥ: deceit in the name of | santi: is there excisting | śāṭhyāt: by dishonest means | svārtham: with selfish motive | parijihīrṣitoḥ: to keep away | sucaritam: your good conduct | kim: why | na budhyase: you are not knowing? |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, the righteous sould! Both of them are smoothly deceiving in the name of righteousness with an intent to keep away your good conduct, with selfish away your good conduct, with selfish motive and by dishonest means. You are not knowing."

VERSE 9

यदि नैवम् व्यवसितम् स्याद्धि प्राग्रेव राघव
तयोः प्रागेव दत्तश्च स्याद्वरः प्रकृतश्च सः

yadi naivam vyavasitam syāddhi prāgreva rāghava
tayoḥ prāgeva dattaśca syādvaraḥ prakṛtaśca saḥ

SYNONYMS

rāghava: Oh | ṟama! na syādyadi: if it was not vyavasitam = decision | prageva: indeed long ago | evam: thus | tayoḥ: by both of them | prakṛtaḥ: naturally | saḥ: that | varaḥ: boon | syāt: might | dattaḥ: have been given | prāgeva: long ago indeed. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, Rama! If it was not indeed an earlier decision taken long ago by both of them, the boon must have been given naturally even long ago."

VERSE 10

लोक विद्विष्टम् आरब्धम् त्वद् अन्यस्य अभिषेचनम्
नोत्सहे सहितुम् वीर तत्र मे क्षन्तुमर्हसि

loka vidviṣṭam ārabdham tvad anyasya abhiṣecanam
notsahe sahitum vīra tatra me kṣantumarhasi

SYNONYMS

vīra: Oh | brave man! abhiṣecanam: inangurating | ārabdham: that is started | lokavidviṣṭam: is not to the liking of people | notsahe: whic I cannot | sahitum: tolerate | tatra: in that matter | arhasi: you are proper | kṣantum: to excense | me: me. |

TRANSLATION

"Enthroning other than yourself is not to the liking of the people. I cannot tolerate this act that is started. Excuse me in this matter."

VERSE 11

येन इयम् आगता द्वैधम् तव बुद्धिर् मही पते
स हि धर्मः मम द्वेष्यः प्रसन्गात् यस्य मुह्यसि

yena iyam āgatā dvaidham tava buddhir mahī pate
sa hi dharmaḥ mama dveṣyaḥ prasangāt yasya muhyasi

SYNONYMS

mahāmate: oh | the great-minded! saḥ dharmaḥ: that righteousness | yena: bye which | tava: your | iyam: this | buddhiḥ: intellect | āgatā: got | dvaidham: disunited | yasya: by which | prasangāt: indulgence | muhyasi: you are stupefied | dveṣyaḥ: is disliking | mama: to me. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, Rama the great minded! This righteousness by which your intellect got disunited and by which indulgence, you are stupefied, is disliked by me."

VERSE 12

कथम् त्वम् कर्मणा शक्तः कैकेयीवशवर्तिनः
करिष्यसि पितुर्वाक्यमधर्मिष्ठम् विगर्हितम्

katham tvam karmaṇā śaktaḥ kaikeyīvaśavartinaḥ
kariṣyasi piturvākyamadharmiṣṭham vigarhitam

SYNONYMS

tvām: you | śaktaḥ: are capable | karmaṇā: of action | kathana: how | kariṣyasi: can you act on | vākyam: the word | vigarhitam: which is reprehensible | adharmiṣṭam: and which is unrighteous | pituḥ: of father | kaikeyīvaśavartinaḥ: who is behaving |

TRANSLATION

"you are capable of doing retaliatory action. How can you act on the word which is reprehensible and which is unjustified of your father who is surrendering obediently to the will of Kaikeyi?"

VERSE 13

यद्य् अपि प्रतिपत्तिस् ते दैवी च अपि तयोः मतम्
तथा अपि उपेक्षणीयम् ते न मे तत् अपि रोचते

yady api pratipattis te daivī ca api tayoḥ matam
tathā api upekṣaṇīyam te na me tat api rocate

SYNONYMS

kṛto'pi: though | ayam: this | bhedaḥ: treachery | kilbiṣāt: with sinful intent | duḥkam: regret | jāyate: has arisen | me: in me | tatra: in that | nagṛhyate: you are not grasping | evam: in this way | dharmasangaśca: such conduct | garhitaḥ: is to be censured. |

TRANSLATION

"Though they are doing this treachery with a sinful intent, I regret that you are not grasping it. Such a conduct is to be censured."

VERSE 14

मन्सा।अपि कथम् कामम् कुर्यास्त्वम् कामवृत्तयोः
तयोस्त्वहितयोर्नित्यम् शत्र्वोः पित्रभिधानयोः

mansā|api katham kāmam kuryāstvam kāmavṛttayoḥ
tayostvahitayornityam śatrvoḥ pitrabhidhānayoḥ

SYNONYMS

katham: how | kuryāḥ tvam: can you do | manasā'pi: even by mind | kāmam: the desire | śatrvaḥ: of enemies | pitrabhidhānayoḥ: in the name of parents | kāmavṛttayoḥ: who are action on their own free will | ahitayoḥ: who were not desirous of your welfare | nityam: forever. |

TRANSLATION

"But of them, action on their own free will, were never desirous of your welfare. They are enemies in the name of parents. It is not proper even to think of fulfilling their desire."

VERSE 15

यद्यपि प्रतिपत्तिस्ते दैवी चापि तयोर्मतम्
तथा प्युपेक्षणीयम् ते न मे तदपि रोचते

yadyapi pratipattiste daivī cāpi tayormatam
tathā pyupekṣaṇīyam te na me tadapi rocate

SYNONYMS

matam yadyapi: though opinion | te: by you. | tayoḥ: their | pratipathiḥ: action | daivīca: is indeed caused by divine power | tathāpi: even then | narocate: I do not desire | upekṣaṇīyam: to be overlooked |

TRANSLATION

"It may be your opinion that their action is influenced by mere destiny. Even then, I do not like you to be indifferent to this also."

VERSE 16

विक्लवो वीर्य हीनो यः स दैवम् अनुवर्तते
वीराः सम्भावित आत्मानो न दैवम् पर्युपासते

viklavo vīrya hīno yaḥ sa daivam anuvartate
vīrāḥ sambhāvita ātmāno na daivam paryupāsate

SYNONYMS

yaḥ: who | vikalabaḥ: confused person | vīryahīnaḥ: cowardly person | saḥ: that person | anuvartate: follows | daivam: destiny. | vīrāḥ: brave men | sambhāvitāt mānaḥ: with self respect naparyupaasate = do not honour |

TRANSLATION

"Only a confused and cowardly person depends upon destiny. Brave men with self-respect do not honour the destiny."

VERSE 17

दैवम् पुरुष कारेण यः समर्थः प्रबाधितुम्
न दैवेन विपन्न अर्थः पुरुषः सो अवसीदति

daivam puruṣa kāreṇa yaḥ samarthaḥ prabādhitum
na daivena vipanna arthaḥ puruṣaḥ so avasīdati

SYNONYMS

yaḥ puruṣaḥ: which person | samarthaḥ: is competant | prabādhitum: to keep off | daivam: by destiny. | puruṣakāreṇa: by human effort | saḥ: that person | na avasīdati: does not regret | vipannārtha: in the sense of not being failed |

TRANSLATION

"That person who is capable of keeping off destiny by human effort, does not have regret in the sense of not being failed by destiny."

VERSE 18

द्रक्ष्यन्ति तु अद्य दैवस्य पौरुषम् पुरुषस्य च
दैव मानुषयोः अद्य व्यक्ता व्यक्तिर् भविष्यति

drakṣyanti tu adya daivasya pauruṣam puruṣasya ca
daiva mānuṣayoḥ adya vyaktā vyaktir bhaviṣyati

SYNONYMS

adya: this day | drakṣyanti: can be seen | pauruṣam: the prowess | daivasya: of destiny | puruṣasya: and of man | vyaktiḥ: distinction | daivamānnṣayoḥ: between man and destiny bhavishhyati = will become | vyaktā: clear. |

TRANSLATION

"Today, all can see how much prowess is there in destiny and in man. This day, the distinction between man and the destiny will be clearly perceived."

VERSE 19

अद्य मत् पौरुष हतम् दैवम् द्रक्ष्यन्ति वै जनाः
यद् दैवात् आहतम् ते अद्य द्र्ष्टम् राज्य अभिषेचनम्

adya mat pauruṣa hatam daivam drakṣyanti vai janāḥ
yad daivāt āhatam te adya drṣṭam rājya abhiṣecanam

SYNONYMS

adya: today | yaddaivāt: by which destiny | te: your | rājyābhiṣecanam: coronation for | dṛṣṭam: is seen | āhatam: crushed | janāḥ: people | drakṣyantivai: will see | daivam: (that)destiny | matpauruṣahatam: ebing crused by my prowess. |

TRANSLATION

"By which destiny, your coronation is seen crushed, I shall crush that destiny by my prowess. Let all people see it!"

VERSE 20

अत्यन्कुशम् इव उद्दामम् गजम् मद बल उद्धतम्
प्रधावितम् अहम् दैवम् पौरुषेण निवर्तये

atyankuśam iva uddāmam gajam mada bala uddhatam
pradhāvitam aham daivam pauruṣeṇa nivartaye

SYNONYMS

pauruṣeṇa: by prowess | aham: I | nivartate: shall turn back | daivam: destiny | gajam iva: as elephant | atyaṇkuśam: which is not caring a hook | pradhāvitam: which is running | uddhāmam: fiercely | mada baloddhatam: with violent force. |

TRANSLATION

"By my prowess, I shall turn back this destiny, as framing back an elephant which is not caring a hook and which is fiercely running with violent force."

VERSE 21

लोक पालाः समस्ताः ते न अद्य राम अभिषेचनम्
न च क्र्त्स्नाः त्रयो लोका विहन्युः किम् पुनः पिता

loka pālāḥ samastāḥ te na adya rāma abhiṣecanam
na ca krtsnāḥ trayo lokā vihanyuḥ kim punaḥ pitā

SYNONYMS

adya: today | samastāḥ: all | te: those | lokapālāḥ: guardians of world | navihamyauḥ: cannot withhold | rāmābhiṣecanam: Rama's coronation | na: nor | kṛtsnāḥ: all | trayaḥ lokāḥ ca: three worlds also | kimpunaḥ: why to talk of | pitaḥ: father. |

TRANSLATION

"Neither all the guardians of the world nor the three worlds put together can withhold Rama's coronation today. Why to talk about father."

VERSE 22

यैः विवासः तव अरण्ये मिथो राजन् समर्थितः
अरण्ये तु विवत्स्यन्ति चतुर् दश समाः तथा

yaiḥ vivāsaḥ tava araṇye mitho rājan samarthitaḥ
araṇye tu vivatsyanti catur daśa samāḥ tathā

SYNONYMS

rājan: Oh | king! yaiḥ: by whom | samarthitaḥ: being advocated | mithaḥ: secretly | tava: your | nivāsaḥ: residence | araṇye: in forest | te: they | tathā: in that way | nivatsyanti: will have to reside | caturdaśa samāḥ: for fourteen years. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, King! Those who are secritlyadvocating you to live in a forest for fourteen years, will have to reside in forest for fourteen years in that manner."

VERSE 23

अहम् तदा आशाम् चेत्स्यामि पितुस् तस्याः च या तव
अभिषेक विघातेन पुत्र राज्याय वर्तते

aham tadā āśām cetsyāmi pitus tasyāḥ ca yā tava
abhiṣeka vighātena putra rājyāya vartate

SYNONYMS

tat: that is why | aham: I | chetsyāmi: shall break down | āśām: the hope | pituḥ: fo father | tasyāśca: and is trying | putrarājyāya: for kingdom to her son | tava abhiṣekavighātena: by creting obstacle to your coronation. |

TRANSLATION

"That is why, I shall break down the hope of father and of Kaikeyi, who is trying for kingdom to her son by creating obstacle to your coronation."

VERSE 24

मद् बलेन विरुद्धाय न स्यात् दैव बलम् तथा
प्रभविष्यति दुह्खाय यथा उग्रम् पौरुषम् मम

mad balena viruddhāya na syāt daiva balam tathā
prabhaviṣyati duhkhāya yathā ugram pauruṣam mama

SYNONYMS

yathā: how | mama pauruṣam: my prowess | ugram: which is terrific | prabhaviṣyati: will originate | duḥkhāya: pain | viruddhāya: to those who are opposed to | madbalena: my strength | tathā: thus | daivabalam: the strength of destiny | nasyāt: will not do. |

TRANSLATION

"The strength of destiny cannot create that much pain as that which my terrific prowess will create to those who are opposed to my strength."

VERSE 25

ऊर्ध्वम् वर्ष सहस्र अन्ते प्रजा पाल्यम् अनन्तरम्
आर्य पुत्राः करिष्यन्ति वन वासम् गते त्वयि

ūrdhvam varṣa sahasra ante prajā pālyam anantaram
ārya putrāḥ kariṣyanti vana vāsam gate tvayi

SYNONYMS

prajāpālyamanantaram: after having ruled the people | varṣāsahasrānte: at the end of thousand years | tvayi: you | vanavāsamgate: having gone to the forest | āryaputrāḥ: sons of you | kariṣyanti: will rule the people. |

TRANSLATION

"At the end of a thousand years of your ruling the kingdom, you having gone to the forest, your sons will govern the kingdom."

VERSE 26

पूर्व राज र्षि व्र्त्त्या हि वन वासो विधीयते
प्रजा निक्षिप्य पुत्रेषु पुत्रवत् परिपालने

pūrva rāja rṣi vrttyā hi vana vāso vidhīyate
prajā nikṣipya putreṣu putravat paripālane

SYNONYMS

nikṣipya: keeping | paripālane: protection | prajāḥ: of people | putravat: as sons | putreṣu: in sons | vidhīyate hi: it is indeed practice | pūrva rājarṣi vṛttyāḥ: as vocation of ancient kings | vanavāsaḥ: to reside in forest. |

TRANSLATION

"It is indeed a practice for ancient kings to go to the forest after keeping care of people, to be nourished as children, into the hands of their sons."

VERSE 27

स चेद् राजनि अनेक अग्रे राज्य विभ्रम शन्कया
न एवम् इच्चसि धर्मात्मन् राज्यम् राम त्वम् आत्मनि

sa ced rājani aneka agre rājya vibhrama śankayā
na evam iccasi dharmātman rājyam rāma tvam ātmani

SYNONYMS

28| dharmātman: righteous | rāma: Rama | rājani: If the king Dasaratha | anekāgre: is not stable minded | saḥ tvam: such of you | evam: thus | na icchasiyet: is not longing | rājyam: kingdom | ātmani: in oneself | pratijāneca: I am promising | te: your | vīra: oh | hero! ma'bhūvam: I will not become | vīralokabhāk: the one who gets heroic world of heaven | aham: I | rakṣeyam: shall protect | tava: your | sāgaram iva: as sea | velā: by sea court. |

TRANSLATION

"If you think that you do not want kingdom because of your doubt that the kingdom will get disturbed due to unstable mind of king Dasaratha, you need not fear. I am promising you. I shall protect the kingdom as a sea coast protects the sea. If not, I will not obtain the heroic world of heaven."

VERSE 29

मन्गलैः अभिषिन्चस्व तत्र त्वम् व्याप्र्तः भव
अहम् एको मही पालान् अलम् वारयितुम् बलात्

mangalaiḥ abhiṣincasva tatra tvam vyāprtaḥ bhava
aham eko mahī pālān alam vārayitum balāt

SYNONYMS

tvam: you | abhiṣiṇcasva: get coronated | mangalaiḥ: with auspicious things | bhava: become | vyāpṛtaḥ: engaged | tatra: in that matter | aham: I | ekaḥ: alone | alam: is competent | vārayitum: to ward off mahiipaalaan = kings | balāt: by force. |

TRANSLATION

"You become engaged in getting coronated with auspicious things. I for one is competent to ward off the kings by force."

VERSE 30

न शोभ अर्थाव् इमौ बाहू न धनुर् भूषणाय मे
न असिरा बन्धन अर्थाय न शराः स्तम्भ हेतवः

na śobha arthāv imau bāhū na dhanur bhūṣaṇāya me
na asirā bandhana arthāya na śarāḥ stambha hetavaḥ

SYNONYMS

iman: these | me bāhū: my arms | na: are not | śobhārthau: meant for handsomeness | dhanuḥ: bow | bhūṣaṇāya: for decoration | asiḥ: sword | ābandhanārthāya: for tying around waist | śarāḥ: arrows | stambhahetavaḥ: for staying fixed | sarvam: all | me: my | etat: these | catuṣṭayam: four | amitra damanārtham: are for subduing the enemies. |

TRANSLATION

"My arms are not meant for handsomeness alone. Bow is not for decoration. Sword is not for tying around waist. Arrows are not for staying immobile. All these four are intended for subduing enemies."

VERSE 31

न च अहम् कामये अत्यर्थम् यः स्यात् शत्रुर् मतः मम

na ca aham kāmaye atyartham yaḥ syāt śatrur mataḥ mama

SYNONYMS

32| aham: I | nakāmaye: do not wish to tolerate | atyartham: too much | yaḥ: one who is | mataḥ syāt: considered as | śatuḥ: enemy | mama: to me | na kalpaye: I do not care | śatrum: enemy | vajriṇam vā: even Indra | pragaṛhītena: by wearing | asinā: sword | tīkṣṇadhareṇa: with sharp edge | vidyuccalitavarcasā: with sharp edge | vidyuccalita varcasā: having moving brilliance like lightening. mahii = this earth | bhavitā: will become | gahanā: impermeable | duścarā: uninhabited | hastyaśvanarahastoruśirobhiḥ: with hands thighs and heads of elephants horses and men | me khadganiṣpeṣaniṣpiṣṭaiḥ: crushed having been struck by my sword. |

TRANSLATION

"I do not wish to tolerate too much the one who is considered as enemy to me. By wearing a sword with sharp edge which is mavingly bright like lightening, I do not care any enemy, even Indra himself. This earth will become impermeable, uninhabited with heads hands and thighs of elephants horses and men crushed, having been hit by my sword."

VERSE 33

खड्ग निष्पेष निष्पिष्टैः गहना दुश्चरा च मे
हस्ति अश्व नर हस्त ऊरु शिरोभिर् भविता मही

khaḍga niṣpeṣa niṣpiṣṭaiḥ gahanā duścarā ca me
hasti aśva nara hasta ūru śirobhir bhavitā mahī

SYNONYMS

adya: now | dvipāḥ: elephants | patiṣyanti: can full | bhūmau: on earth | me khadgadhārāhatāḥ: being hit by the gush of my sword | adraya iva: like mountains | dīpyamānāḥ: in blaze | meghāiva: like lcouds | savidyutaḥ: with flashes of lightening. |

TRANSLATION

"Now, elephants can fall down on earth, being hit by the gush of my sword, like mountains in blaze, like clouds, savidyutaH = with flashes of lightening.

VERSE 34

खड्ग धारा हता मे अद्य दीप्यमानाइव अद्रयः
पतिष्यन्ति द्विपा भूमौ मेघाइव सविद्युतः

khaḍga dhārā hatā me adya dīpyamānāiva adrayaḥ
patiṣyanti dvipā bhūmau meghāiva savidyutaḥ

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

"As I stand holding a bow with fingers wound with shields made of allegator-skin, how any man will fancy himself a hero among men?"

VERSE 35

बद्ध गोधा अन्गुलि त्राणे प्रगृहीत शर आसने
कथम् पुरुष मानी स्यात् पुरुषाणाम् मयि स्थिते

baddha godhā anguli trāṇe pragṛhīta śara āsane
katham puruṣa mānī syāt puruṣāṇām mayi sthite

SYNONYMS

aham: I | atyasyan: shall over power | ekam: one | babhubhiḥ: with many arrows | bahūn: many | ekena: with single arrow | viniyokṣyāmi: discharging | bānān: arrows at | nṛvājigaja marmasu: vitals of men |

TRANSLATION

"While I overpower one with many arrows and many with a single arrow, I discharge my arrows at vitals of men, horses and elephants."

VERSE 36

बहुभिः च एकम् अत्यस्यन्न् एकेन च बहून् जनान्
विनियोक्ष्याम्य् अहम् बाणान् नृ वाजि गज मर्मसु

bahubhiḥ ca ekam atyasyann ekena ca bahūn janān
viniyokṣyāmy aham bāṇān nṛ vāji gaja marmasu

SYNONYMS

prabhū: Oh | ḻord! adya: today | me: my | prabhāvaḥ: strength | astra prabhāvasya: of excellent arrows | prabhaviṣyati: is capable | kartum: to make | tava: you | prabhutvam ca: the supreme power and raajJNyaH = to king Dasaratha | aprabhutām: devoid of power. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, Lord! Today, the strength of my excellent arrows is capable of making you sovereign and making Dasaratha devoid of power."

VERSE 37

अद्य मे अस्त्र प्रभावस्य प्रभावः प्रभविष्यति
राज्ञः च अप्रभुताम् कर्तुम् प्रभुत्वम् च तव प्रभो

adya me astra prabhāvasya prabhāvaḥ prabhaviṣyati
rājñaḥ ca aprabhutām kartum prabhutvam ca tava prabho

SYNONYMS

prabho: Oh | ḻord ṟama! adya: today | me astraprabhāvasy: the effect of my weapons | prabhāvaḥ: prowess | rājñaḥ aprabhutām: non lordship of king | kartum: to do | tava brabhutyamca: government to you | prabhaviṣyati: has the power. |

TRANSLATION

" Oh, Lord Rama! Today the effect of my weapons will remove the power from the king Dasaratha and give the lordship to you."

VERSE 38

अद्य चन्दन सारस्य केयूरा मोक्षणस्य च
वसूनाम् च विमोक्षस्य सुह्र्दाम् पालनस्य च

adya candana sārasya keyūrā mokṣaṇasya ca
vasūnām ca vimokṣasya suhrdām pālanasya ca

39| rāma: Oh | ṟama! adya: today | imau: these | bāhū: arms | anurūpau: worthy of | candana sārasya: sandalwood essence | keyūrāmokṣaṇasya: fo wearing breacelets | vimokṣasya: for bestowal of | vasūnām: riches | pālanasya: for protection of | suhṛdām: friends | kariṣyataḥ: can do | darma: action | nivāraṇe: of preventing | kartṛiṇām: the agents | abhiṣekavighnasya: who obstruct your coronation. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, Rama! These arms worthy of wearing sandalwood essence and bracelets; for bestowing riches and for protection of friends can today do every action to prevent the agents who want to obstruct your coronation."

VERSE 40

ब्रवीहि को अद्य एव मया वियुज्यताम्
तव असुह्र्द् प्राण यशः सुह्र्ज् जनैः
यथा तव इयम् वसुधा वशे भवेत्
तथा एव माम् शाधि तव अस्मि किम्करः

bravīhi ko adya eva mayā viyujyatām
tava asuhrd prāṇa yaśaḥ suhrj janaiḥ
yathā tava iyam vasudhā vaśe bhavet
tathā eva mām śādhi tava asmi kimkaraḥ

"Tell me now itself who your enemy be made deprived of life, honour and friendship, by me. Command me so that how this earth will become your dominion. I am your servant.
