VERSE 1

तत् श्रुत्वा निपुणम् सर्वम् भरतः सह मन्त्रिभिः
इन्गुदी मूलम् आगम्य राम शय्याम् अवेक्ष्य ताम्

tat śrutvā nipuṇam sarvam bharataḥ saha mantribhiḥ
ingudī mūlam āgamya rāma śayyām avekṣya tām

SYNONYMS

2| śrutvā: Having heard | tat sarvam: all that | nipuṇam: perfectly | bharataḥ: Bharata | āgamya: approached | iṅgudīmūlam: the foot of Ingudi Tree | mantribhiḥ saha: along with his ministers | avakṣya: gazed at | tām: that | rāmaśayām: couch on which Rama had lain | abravīt: and said | sarvāḥ: all | jananīḥ: his mothers (as follows) | idam iha: It is here | tena: that | mahātmanā: magnanimous hero | śayitā: laid himself down | śarvarī: for that night | asya: his (limbs) | vimardidam: pressing | bhūmau: the earth. |

TRANSLATION

Having heard all that perfectly, Bharata approached the foot of Ingudi Tree along with his ministers and gazed on that grass-bed on which Rama had slept. Thereafter, he said to all his mothers as follows: "It is here that the magnanimous hero laid himself for that night, his limbs pressing the earth."

VERSE 3

महा भाग कुलीनेन महा भागेन धीमता
जातो दशरथेन ऊर्व्याम् न रामः स्वप्तुम् अर्हति

mahā bhāga kulīnena mahā bhāgena dhīmatā
jāto daśarathena ūrvyām na rāmaḥ svaptum arhati

SYNONYMS

mahābhagena: of the great | dhīmatā: and segacious | daśarathena: Dasaratha | mahābāga kulīnena: in an illustrious family | rāmaḥ: Rama | na arhati: does not deserve | svaptum: to sleep | urvyām: on the bare earth! |

TRANSLATION

"Born of the great and segacious Dasaratha in an illustrious family, Rama verily does not desrve to sleep on this bare earth!"

VERSE 4

अजिन उत्तर संस्तीर्णे वर आस्तरण संचये
शयित्वा पुरुष व्याघ्रः कथम् शेते मही तले

ajina uttara saṃstīrṇe vara āstaraṇa saṃcaye
śayitvā puruṣa vyāghraḥ katham śete mahī tale

SYNONYMS

katham: how could | puruṣavyaghraḥ: Rama the tiger among men | śayitvā: who used to sleep | varāstaraṇa samehaye: on a couch horded with rich cushions | ajinottara samstīrṇe: covered with superior hairy skins of antelopes | śete: sleep | mahītale: on abre floor? |

TRANSLATION

"How could Rama the tiger among men, who used to sleep on a couch horded with rich cushions covered with superior hairy skins of antelopes, sleep on a bare floor?"

VERSE 5

प्रासाद अग्र विमानेषु वलभीषु च सर्वदा
हैम राजत भौमेषु वर आस्त्ररण शालिषु

prāsāda agra vimāneṣu valabhīṣu ca sarvadā
haima rājata bhaumeṣu vara āstraraṇa śāliṣu

9| iṣitvā: having dwelt | sarvadā: ever | prāsādāgra vimāneṣu: in palaces | valabhīṣuca: and in turrets | varāstaraṇa śāliṣu: furnished with excellent carpets | puṣpasamcaya citreṣu: decked with heaps of flowers | candanāgaru gandhiṣu: and perfumed with sandal and aloes | pāṇḍarābhra prakāśeṣu: like unto a bright and towering cloud | śukasamgharuteṣuca: re-echoing to the cries of parrots | prāsāda varavaryeṣu: surpassing the finest of palaces | śīta vatsu: which were cool | sugandhiṣu: fragrant with perfumes | kṛta kāṇcana bhithiṣu: with its golden walls | merukalpeṣu: resembling unto Mount Meru | tatra: there | pratibodhitaḥ: he was | kāle: at the fitting time awakened | gīta vāditra nirghoṣaiḥ: by the tinkling of ornametns | mṛdaṇgavara śabdaiśca: by the excellent sound of clay tomtoms | saḥ: Rama | paramtapaḥ: the tornmentor of his enemy | vanditaḥ: glorified | bahubhiḥ: and minstrels | anurūpābhiḥ: through appropriate | gathābhiḥ: ballads | stutibhiśca: and songs of praise. |

TRANSLATION

"Having ever dwelt in palaces, the upper apartments resembling the chariots of the gods and in turrets, furnished with excellent carpets decked with heaps of flowers, perfumed with sandal and aloes, like unto a bright and towering cloud, re-echoing to the cries of parrots, suprassing the finest of palaces, which wre cool and fragrant with perfules, as unto Mount Meru with its golden walls, where in that palace he was awakened at the fitting time by sogns and music from various instruments, tinkling of ornaments and the excellent sounds of clay tomtoms, glorified by many panegyrists, bards and ministrels throught appropriate ballads and songs of praise."

VERSE 10

अश्रद्धेयम् इदम् लोके न सत्यम् प्रतिभाति मा
मुह्यते खलु मे भावः स्वप्नो अयम् इति मे मतिः

aśraddheyam idam loke na satyam pratibhāti mā
muhyate khalu me bhāvaḥ svapno ayam iti me matiḥ

SYNONYMS

idam: this | aśraddheyam: is unbelievable | na pratibhāti: and does not appear | satyam: true | : to me | me: My | bhāvaḥ: state of mind | muhyati khalu: is indded bewildered | matiḥ: wish | ayam: this | svapnaḥ iti: were a dream. |

TRANSLATION

"This ( such a prince becoming like this) is unbelievable in the world and does not appear true to me. My mind is indeed bewildered. I wish that it were a dream."

VERSE 11

न नूनम् दैवतम् किंचित् कालेन बलवत्तरम्
यत्र दाशरथी रामो भूमाउ एवम् शयीत सः

na nūnam daivatam kiṃcit kālena balavattaram
yatra dāśarathī rāmo bhūmāu evam śayīta saḥ

SYNONYMS

nūnam: surely | daivatam: a deity | na kincit: is not even a little | balavattaram: more powerful | kālena: than Time (the will of god) | yatra: since | saḥ: that | rāmaḥ: Rama | dāśarathiḥ: the son of Dasaratha | śayīta: has to sleep | bhūmāveva: on the bare ground! |

TRANSLATION

"Surely even a deity is not a little more powerful than Time (the will of god), since that Rama, the son of Dasaratha has to sleep on the bare ground!"

VERSE 12

विदेह राजस्य सुता सीता च प्रिय दर्शना
दयिता शयिता भूमौ स्नुषा दशरथस्य च

videha rājasya sutā sītā ca priya darśanā
dayitā śayitā bhūmau snuṣā daśarathasya ca

SYNONYMS

sītāca: and Seetha | sutā: the daughter | videha rājasya: of the king of Videha | priyadarśanā: lovely to look upon | dayitā: the charished | snuṣāca: daughter-in-law | daśarathasya: of Dsaaratha | śayitā: has to sleep | bhūmau: on the floor. |

TRANSLATION

"Even Seetha the daughter of the king of videha, lovely to look upon and the cherished daughter-in-law of Dasaratha has to sleep on the floor!"

VERSE 13

इयम् शय्या मम भ्रातुर् इदम् हि परिवर्तितम्
स्थण्डिले कठिने सर्वम् गात्रैर् विमृदितम् तृणम्

iyam śayyā mama bhrātur idam hi parivartitam
sthaṇḍile kaṭhine sarvam gātrair vimṛditam tṛṇam

SYNONYMS

iyam: this | śayyā: is indeed the bed | mama bhrātuḥ: of my elder brother | idam: here are | parivartitamhi: indeed the blessed marks of his changing sides | sarvam tṛṇam: in the form of all the blades of in the form of all the blades of Kusa grass | mṛditam: trampled | gātraiḥ: by his limbs | kaṭhine: on the hard | sthaṅḍile: ground. |

TRANSLATION

"This is the bed of my elder brother. Here are indeed the blessed marks of his changing sides, in the form of all the blades of Kusa grass, trampled by his limbs on the hard ground."

VERSE 14

मन्ये साभरणा सुप्ता सीता अस्मिन् शयने तदा
तत्र तत्र हि दृश्यन्ते सक्ताः कनक बिन्दवः

manye sābharaṇā suptā sītā asmin śayane tadā
tatra tatra hi dṛśyante saktāḥ kanaka bindavaḥ

SYNONYMS

manye: I think | uttame: the blessed | sītā: Seetha | suptā: has slept | asmin: on this | śayanā: bed | sābharaṇā: along with her jewels | tatra tatra: (for) here and there | kanakabimdavaḥ: some particles of gold | dṛśyante hi: indeed appear | saktāḥ: to be stuck up. |

TRANSLATION

"I think the blessed Seetha has slept on this bed along with her jewels for, some particles of gold appear to be stuck up, here and there."

VERSE 15

उत्तरीयम् इह आसक्तम् सुव्यक्तम् सीतया तदा
तथा ह्य् एते प्रकाशन्ते सक्ताः कौशेय तन्तवः

uttarīyam iha āsaktam suvyaktam sītayā tadā
tathā hy ete prakāśante saktāḥ kauśeya tantavaḥ

SYNONYMS

suvyaktam: It is very clear | uttarīyam: that the upper garment | sītayā: of Seetha | āsaktam: was entangled | iha: (with these blades) here | tadā: at that time | tathāhi: that is why | ete: these | kanśeyatantavaḥ: silk threads | prakāśante: appear | saktāḥ: stuck ( to them). |

TRANSLATION

"It is very clear that the upper garment of Seetha got entangled with these blades here at that time. That is why, these silk-threads appear stuck to them."

VERSE 16

मन्ये भर्तुः सुखा शय्या येन बाला तपस्विनी
सुकुमारी सती दुह्खम् न विजानाति मैथिली

manye bhartuḥ sukhā śayyā yena bālā tapasvinī
sukumārī satī duhkham na vijānāti maithilī

SYNONYMS

manye: i think | śayyā: the bed | bhartuḥ: of her lord | sukhā: is sweet | satī: to a woman | maithilī: and thought Seetha | balā: is young | tapasvinī: and unfortunate | yena: yet | sukumarī: delicate she be | jānāti: she would experience | na hi duḥkham: no suffereing indeed. |

TRANSLATION

"I think the bed of her husband is sweet to a woman and thought Seetha is young and unfortunate, yet however delicate she be, she would experience no suffering."

VERSE 17

हा हन्तास्मि नृशंसो।अहम् यत्सभार्यः कृतेमम
ईदृशीं राघवः शय्यामधिशेते ह्यानाथवत्

hā hantāsmi nṛśaṃso|aham yatsabhāryaḥ kṛtemama
īdṛśīṃ rāghavaḥ śayyāmadhiśete hyānāthavat

SYNONYMS

hā hanta: Alas! | aham: I | asmi: am | nṛśamsaḥ: cruel | yat: because | mamakṛte: on my account | anāthavat: like an orphan | rāghavaḥ: Rama | sabhāryaḥ: along with his wife | adhiśeta: slept on | īdṛśīm: such | śayyām: a bed. |

TRANSLATION

"Alas! I am a cruel man because on my account, Rama, like an orphan, along with his wife slept on such a bed."

VERSE 18

सार्वभौम कुले जातः सर्व लोक सुख आवहः
सर्व लोक प्रियः त्यक्त्वा राज्यम् प्रियम् अनुत्तमम्

sārvabhauma kule jātaḥ sarva loka sukha āvahaḥ
sarva loka priyaḥ tyaktvā rājyam priyam anuttamam

SYNONYMS

19| katham: How can | rāghavaḥ: Rama | jātaḥ: born | sārvabhaumakule: in the race of monarches | sammataḥ: hightly honoured | sarva lokasya: by the entire world | indīvara śyāmaḥ: having a dark complexion as that of a blue lotus | raktākṣaḥ: having red eyes | priyadarśana: lovely to look at | sukhabhāgī: who is entitiled for comfort | na duḥhārhaḥ: and who is not worthy of suffereing | śayitaḥ: sleep | bhuvi: on the ground | tyaktā: abandoning | anuttamam: excelletn | rājyam: kingdom and sukham = comfort? |

TRANSLATION

"How can Rama, born in the race of monarchs, highly honoured by the entire world, beloved of all the people, having a dark complexion as that of a blue-lotus, having red eyes, lovely to look at who is entittled for comfort and who is not worthy of suffering, sleep on the gound, abandoning excellent kingdom and comfort?"

VERSE 20

धन्यः खलु महाभागो लक्ष्मणः शुभलक्षमणः
भ्रातरम् विषमे काले यो राममनुवर्तते

dhanyaḥ khalu mahābhāgo lakṣmaṇaḥ śubhalakṣamaṇaḥ
bhrātaram viṣame kāle yo rāmamanuvartate

SYNONYMS

lakśmaṇaḥ: Lakshmana | śubhalakṣaṇaḥ: and an exceedingly lucky man | yaḥ: who | anuvartate: accompanied | bhrātaram: his elder brother | rāmam: Rama | viṣame: in an difficult | kāle: time | dhanyaḥ khalu: is indeed a fortunate man. |

TRANSLATION

"Lakshmana, having auspicious marks on his body and an exceedingly lucky man, who accompanied his elder brother Rama in times of adversity in indeed a fortunate man."

VERSE 21

सिद्ध अर्था खलु वैदेही पतिम् या अनुगता वनम्
वयम् संशयिताः सर्वे हीनाः तेन महात्मना

siddha arthā khalu vaidehī patim yā anugatā vanam
vayam saṃśayitāḥ sarve hīnāḥ tena mahātmanā

SYNONYMS

vaidehī: Seetha | : who | anugatā: went together with | patim: her husband | vanam: to the forest | siddhārthā khalu: is indeed an accomplished woman | sarve: All | vayam: of us | hīnāḥ: who are bereft | mahātmanā: of the highly virtuous | tena: Rama | sanśayitāḥ: are unsettled. |

TRANSLATION

"Seetha, who went together with her husband to the forest, is indeed an accomplished woman. All of us, deprived of the highly virtuous Rama, are an unsettled lot."

VERSE 22

अकर्ण धारा पृथिवी शून्या इव प्रतिभाति मा
गते दशरथे स्वर्गे रामे च अरण्यम् आश्रिते

akarṇa dhārā pṛthivī śūnyā iva pratibhāti mā
gate daśarathe svarge rāme ca araṇyam āśrite

SYNONYMS

daśarathe: Dasaratha | gate: went | svargam: to heaven | rāmeca: Rama | āśrite: is dwelling in | araṇyam: the forest | pṛthivī: this earth | pratibhāti: is appearing | : to me | nauriva: as a boat | akarṇadhārā: without a helmsman. |

TRANSLATION

"Dasaratha went to heaven. Rama is dwelling in the forest. this kingdom appears to me as a boat without ahelmsman."

VERSE 23

न च प्रार्थयते कश्चिन् मनसा अपि वसुंधराम्
वने अपि वसतः तस्य बाहु वीर्य अभिरक्षिताम्

na ca prārthayate kaścin manasā api vasuṃdharām
vane api vasataḥ tasya bāhu vīrya abhirakṣitām

SYNONYMS

vasataḥ api: even if staying | vane: in the forest | vasumdharām: this earth | bāhuvīryābhirakṣitām: is being protected by the power of arms | tasya: of that Rama | prārthayate: cannot be desired | manasāpi: even in one's mind | kaścit: by any one. |

TRANSLATION

"Even if staying in the forest, Rama protects this earth with the power of his arms. Hence, nobdy can think even in his mind, to invade this kingdom."

VERSE 24

शून्य सम्वरणा रक्षाम् अयन्त्रित हय द्विपाम्
अपावृत पुर द्वाराम् राज धानीम् अरक्षिताम्

śūnya samvaraṇā rakṣām ayantrita haya dvipām
apāvṛta pura dvārām rāja dhānīm arakṣitām

SYNONYMS

25| śatruvaḥ: enemies | nābhimanyate: do not long for | rājadhānīm: that royal capital of Ayodhya | śūnya samvaraṇā rakṣām: without guards to watch over its ramparts | ayantrita haya dvipām: with its unrestrained horses and elephants | apāvṛta pura dvārām: with its city-gates laid open | arakṣitām: without any defenders | aprahṛṣṭa balām: denuded of its happy army | śūnyām: plunged in desolation | viṣamasthām: abiding in difficulties | anāvṛtām: and exposed | viṣakṛtān bhakṣāmiva: like poisoned food. |

TRANSLATION

"Without guards to watch over its ramparts, with its unrestrained horses and elephants, with its city-gates laid open, without any defenders, denuded of its happy army, plunged in desolation in difficulties and exposed, that royal capital of Ayodhya will be shunned like poisoned food even by the enemies."

VERSE 26

अद्य प्रभृति भूमौ तु शयिष्ये अहम् तृणेषु वा
फल मूल अशनो नित्यम् जटा चीराणि धारयन्

adya prabhṛti bhūmau tu śayiṣye aham tṛṇeṣu vā
phala mūla aśano nityam jaṭā cīrāṇi dhārayan

SYNONYMS

adya prabhṛti: from today | aham: I | śayiṣye: shall sleep | bhūmautu: on the earth | tṛṇeṣuvā: or on the grass | dhārayan: wearing | jaṭācīrāṇi: my locks matted and with robes of bark | nityam: by all means | phalamulāśanaḥ: living on fruits and roots. |

TRANSLATION

"From today onwards, I shall sleep on the earth or on the grass, with my locks matted, wearing robes of bark and by all means living on fruits and roots."

VERSE 27

तस्य अर्थम् उत्तरम् कालम् निवत्स्यामि सुखम् वने
तम् प्रतिश्रवम् आमुच्य न अस्य मिथ्या भविष्यति

tasya artham uttaram kālam nivatsyāmi sukham vane
tam pratiśravam āmucya na asya mithyā bhaviṣyati

SYNONYMS

uttaram kālam: for the rest of his exile | tasya artham: on behalf of Rama | nivatsyāmi: I shall dwell | sukham: cheerfully | vane: in the forest | āmucya: discharging | tam: that | pratiśravam: promise | asya: the voews of Rama | nabhaviṣyati: shall not have been made | mithyā: in vain. |

TRANSLATION

"For the rest of his exile, on behalf of Rama, I shall dwell cheerfully in the forest, thereby discharging that promise so that the vows of Rama shall not have been made in vain."

VERSE 28

वसन्तम् भ्रातुर् अर्थाय शत्रुघ्नो मा अनुवत्स्यति
लक्ष्मणेन सह तु आर्यो अयोध्याम् पालयिष्यति

vasantam bhrātur arthāya śatrughno mā anuvatsyati
lakṣmaṇena saha tu āryo ayodhyām pālayiṣyati

SYNONYMS

śatrughnaḥ: Shatrughna | anuvatsyati: will bear company | : with me | vasantam: residing (in the forest) | bhrātuḥ arthāye: on behalf of Rama | āryaḥ: Rama my elder brother | lakṣmaṇena saha: along with Lakshamana | pālayiṣyati hi: will protect | ayodhyām: Ayodhya. |

TRANSLATION

"Shatrughna will bear company with me, residing in the forest on behalf of Rama. My elder brother, Rama along with Lakshmana will protect Ayodhya."

VERSE 29

अभिषेक्ष्यन्ति काकुत्स्थम् अयोध्यायाम् द्विजातयः
अपि मे देवताः कुर्युर् इमम् सत्यम् मनो रथम्
प्रसाद्यमानः शिरसा मया स्वयम्
बहु प्रकारम् यदि न प्रपत्स्यते

abhiṣekṣyanti kākutstham ayodhyāyām dvijātayaḥ
api me devatāḥ kuryur imam satyam mano ratham
prasādyamānaḥ śirasā mayā svayam
bahu prakāram yadi na prapatsyate

SYNONYMS

dvijātayaḥ: by brahmanas the twice-born | kākutthsam: Rama | abhiśekṣyanti: will eb enthroned | ayodhyāyām: in Ayodhya | devatāḥ: May the gods | apikuryuḥ: grant | imam: that | me: my | manoratham: desire | satyam: (be made) a reality. |

TRANSLATION

"Rama will be enthroned in ayodhya, by Brahmanas the Twice-born! May the gods grant that my desire be made a reality."

VERSE 30

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे अष्टाशीतितमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye ayodhyākāṇḍe aṣṭāśītitamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

na prapatsyate yadi: should Rama not accept | prasādyamānaḥ: the appeals | śirasā: respectfully (bowing my head) | bahuprakāram: (made) in many ways | mayā: by me | anuvatsyāmi: I shall follow | rāghava: Rama | cirāya: for any length of tiem | vane caram: he roams about in the forest | tataḥ: thereafter | nārhati: He ought not | upakṣitum: to disregard | mām: me. |

TRANSLATION

"Should Rama not accept the respectful appeals made in many a way by me, I shall follow the foot steps of Rama for any length of time he roams about in the forest thereafter. He ought not to refuse this grace to me."
