Ayodhya Kanda - Book Of Ayodhya

VERSE 1

ताम् श्रुत्वा करुणां वाचं पितुर्मरणसंहिताम्
राघवो भरतेनोक्तां बभूव गतचेतनः

tām śrutvā karuṇāṃ vācaṃ piturmaraṇasaṃhitām
rāghavo bharatenoktāṃ babhūva gatacetanaḥ

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | tām vācam: those words | karuṇām: which were mournful | maraṇa samhitām: and relating to death | pituḥ: of his father | uktām: spoken | bharatam: by Bharata | rāghavaḥ: Rama | babhūva: became | gata cetanaḥ: deprived of consciousness. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those mournful words relating to the death of his father, spoken by Bharata, Rama fainted away.

VERSE 2

तं तु वज्रमिवोत्सृष्टमाहवे दानवारिणा
वाग्वज्रं भरतेनोक्तममनोज्ञं परम्तपः

taṃ tu vajramivotsṛṣṭamāhave dānavāriṇā
vāgvajraṃ bharatenoktamamanojñaṃ paramtapaḥ

TRANSLATION

Hearing that unpleasant thunder bolt of words spoken by Bharata, like a thunderbolt released by Indra the Lord of celestials in a battle, Rama the tormentator of his enemies, stretched forth his hands and fell on the ground, in the same manner as a tree covered at extremities with blossoms was cut off by an axe in the forest.

VERSE 4

तथा निपतितं रामं जगत्यां जगतीपतिम्
कूलघातपरिश्रान्तं पसुप्तमिव कुञ्जरम्

tathā nipatitaṃ rāmaṃ jagatyāṃ jagatīpatim
kūlaghātapariśrāntaṃ pasuptamiva kuñjaram

SYNONYMS

5| te: those | bhrātaraḥ: brother | vaidehyā saha: along with Seetha | sarvataḥ: reached from all sides | rudantaḥ: and weepingly | niṣicuḥ vai: sprinkled | salilena: with water | rāmam: on Rama | nipatitam: who fell | jagatyām: on the ground | tathā: thus | jayatīpatim: and who was the Lord of the world | kuṇjaram iva: like an elephant | kūlaghāta pariśrāntam: crushed by a landslide on a bank | prasuptam: where he was sleeping | maheśvāsam: that great archer | śoka karśitam: who was stricken by grief. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing Rama lying on the earth, has the lord of the earth, like an elephant crushed by a land slide on a bank where he was sleeping, those brother along with Seetha approached him from all sides and weepingly sprinkled water on him.

VERSE 6

स तु संज्ञां पुनर्लब्ध्वा नेत्राभ्यामस्रमुत्सृजन्
उपाक्रामत काकुत्थ्सः कृपणं बहु भाषितुम्

sa tu saṃjñāṃ punarlabdhvā netrābhyāmasramutsṛjan
upākrāmata kākutthsaḥ kṛpaṇaṃ bahu bhāṣitum

SYNONYMS

labdhvā: gaining | samjṇām: consciousness | punaḥ: again | saḥ kākutthsaḥ: that Rama | utsṛjan: having poured out | asram: tears | upākrāmata: began | bhāṣitum: to speak | bahu: much | kṛpaṇam: plaintively. |

TRANSLATION

Coming to his senses again and tears falling from his eyes, Rama began to speak much plaintively.

VERSE 7

स रामः स्वर्गतं श्रुत्वा पितरम् पृथिवीपतिम्
उवाच भरतं वाक्यं धर्मात्मा धर्मसंहितम्

sa rāmaḥ svargataṃ śrutvā pitaram pṛthivīpatim
uvāca bharataṃ vākyaṃ dharmātmā dharmasaṃhitam

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | pṛthivīpatim: that the king | pitaram: and his father | svargatam: had ascended to heaven | saḥ ramaḥ: that Rama | dharmātmā: the virtuous man | uvāca: spoke | dharma sahitam: consistent with righteousness | bharata: to Bharata. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing that the King and his father had ascended to heaven, the virtuous. Rama spoke the following words, consistent with righteousness to Bharata.

VERSE 8

किं करिष्याम्ययोध्यायां ताते दिष्टां गतिम् गते
कस्ताम् राजवराद्धीनामयोध्याम् पालयिष्यति

kiṃ kariṣyāmyayodhyāyāṃ tāte diṣṭāṃ gatim gate
kastām rājavarāddhīnāmayodhyām pālayiṣyati

SYNONYMS

kim kariṣyāmi: what should I do | ayodhyāyām: with Ayodhya | tāte: that my father | gate: reached | diṣṭām: gatim = the end of his life? | kaḥ: who | pālayiṣyati: will rule | tām ayodhyām: that Ayodhya | hīnām: bereft | rājavarāt: of that excellent king? |

TRANSLATION

"What should I do with Ayodhya, now that my father reached the end of his life? Who will rule that Ayodhya, which is bereft of that excellent king?

VERSE 9

किम् नु तस्य मया कार्यं दुर्जातेन महात्मनः
यो मृतो मम शोकेन मया चापि न संस्कृतः

kim nu tasya mayā kāryaṃ durjātena mahātmanaḥ
yo mṛto mama śokena mayā cāpi na saṃskṛtaḥ

SYNONYMS

durjātena: In my misfortune | mayā kimnukāryam: what can I do | tasya: for that | mahātmanaḥ: high souled one | yaḥ: who | mṛtaḥ: died | mama śokena: of grief on my account | na samskṛtaścāpi: and not even last rites were performed | mayā: by me. |

TRANSLATION

"In my misfortune, what can I do for that high-souled one? He died of grief on my account and I did not perform the last rites for him!"

VERSE 10

अहोः भरत! सिद्धार्थो येन राजा त्वयानुघ!
शत्रुघ्नेन च सर्वेषु प्रेतकृत्येषु सत्कृतः

ahoḥ bharata! siddhārtho yena rājā tvayānugha!
śatrughnena ca sarveṣu pretakṛtyeṣu satkṛtaḥ

SYNONYMS

bharata: O | anagha: the faultless one! | aho: Alas! | siddhārthaḥ: happy | tvayā: are you | yena: by whom | śatrughneca: as well as by Shatrughna | rājā: the king | satkṛtaḥ: was honoured | sarveṣu: by all | pretya kṛtyeṣu: obsequies rites! |

TRANSLATION

"O, Bharata the faultless one! Alas! Happy are you, by whom as well as by Shatrughna the king was honoured by all obsequial rites!"

VERSE 11

निष्प्रधाना मनेकाग्रां नरेन्द्रेण विना कृताम्
निवृत्तवनवासो।अपि नायोध्यां गन्तुमुत्सहे

niṣpradhānā manekāgrāṃ narendreṇa vinā kṛtām
nivṛttavanavāso|api nāyodhyāṃ gantumutsahe

SYNONYMS

nivṟ^tta vanavaso'pi: even after the end of my exile | na utsahe: I do not wish | gantum: to go | ayodhyām: to Ayodhya | anekāgrāni: which is in a disarranged state | niṣpradhānām: deprived of a chief | vinākṛtām: and bereft | narendreṇa: of a king. |

TRANSLATION

'Even after the end of my exile, I do not want to return to Ayodhya which is i a disarranged state, deprived of a chief and made bereft of a king."

VERSE 12

समाप्तवनवासं मामयोध्यायाम् परम्तप
को।अनु शासिष्यति पुनस्तते लोकान्तरं गते

samāptavanavāsaṃ māmayodhyāyām paramtapa
ko|anu śāsiṣyati punastate lokāntaraṃ gate

SYNONYMS

paramtapa: O | tāte: (while) our father | gate: has gone | lokāntaram: to the other world | kaḥ: who | punaḥ anuṣāsiṣyati: will again advise | mām: me | samāpta vanavāsam: when my exile in the forest is over? |

TRANSLATION

"O, Bharata the tormentator of foes While our father has gone to the other world, who will counsel me when my exile in the forest is over?"

VERSE 13

पुरा प्रेक्ष्य सुवृत्तं माम् पिता यान्याह सान्त्वयन्
वाक्यानि तानि श्रोष्यामि कुतः श्रोतसुखान्यहम्

purā prekṣya suvṛttaṃ mām pitā yānyāha sāntvayan
vākyāni tāni śroṣyāmi kutaḥ śrotasukhānyaham

SYNONYMS

prekṣya: seeing | suvṛttam: my good conduct | purā: formerly | pitā: our father | āha: used to speak | yāni vākyāni: which words | sāntvayan: of appeasement | kutaḥ: from whom | śroṣyāmi: can I hear | tāni: those words | śrotra sukhāni: which are delightful to the ears? |

TRANSLATION

"Formerly, seeing my good conduct, our father used to address me in words of praise; from whom now shall I hear those words delightful to the ears?"

VERSE 14

एवमुक्त्वा स भरतं भार्यामभ्येत्य राघवः
उवाच शोकसम्तप्तः पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाम्

evamuktvā sa bharataṃ bhāryāmabhyetya rāghavaḥ
uvāca śokasamtaptaḥ pūrṇacandranibhānanām

SYNONYMS

uktvā: having spoken | evam: thus | bharatam: to Bharata | saḥ rāmaḥ: that Rama | abhyetya: approached | bhāryām: his wife | pūrṇa cndra nibhānanām: whose face was like a full moon | soka samtaptaḥ: and stricken with grief | uvāca: spoke (as follows) |

TRANSLATION

Having spoken thus to Bharata, Rama went to seek out his consort, whose face resembled the full moon, and overwhelmed with grief, spoke to her as follows:-

VERSE 15

सीते मृतस्ते श्वशुरः पित्रा हीनो।असि लक्ष्मण
भरतो कुःखमाचष्टे स्वर्गतं पृथिवीपतिम्

sīte mṛtaste śvaśuraḥ pitrā hīno|asi lakṣmaṇa
bharato kuḥkhamācaṣṭe svargataṃ pṛthivīpatim

SYNONYMS

sīte: O | te śaśuraḥ: Your father-in-law | mṛtaḥ: is dead | lakṣmaṇa: O | asi: you have become | hīnaḥ: bereft | pitrā: of your father | bharataḥ: Bharata | ācaṣṭe: is telling | duḥkham: a sorrowful news | pṛthivīpatim: of the emperor | svargatam: being dead. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Seetha! your father-in-law is dead. O, Lakshmana! You have become bereft of your father. Bharata is informing a sorrowful news of the emperor being dead.

VERSE 16

ततो बहुगुणम् तेषां बाष्पो नेत्रेष्वजायत
तथा ब्रुवति काकुत्थ्स कुमाराणां यशस्विनाम्

tato bahuguṇam teṣāṃ bāṣpo netreṣvajāyata
tathā bruvati kākutthsa kumārāṇāṃ yaśasvinām

SYNONYMS

kākutthse: (while) Rama | bruvati: was speaking | tathā: thus | bahuguṇam: copious | bāṣpaḥ: tears | ajāyata: caused to flow | tataḥ: then | teṣām kumārāṇām yaśaśivnām netreṣu: from the eyes of those illustrious sons of Dasaratha. |

TRANSLATION

While Rama was uttering those words, copious tears caused to flow then from the eyes of those sons of Dasaratha.

VERSE 17

ततस्ते भ्रातरस्सर्वे भृशमाश्वास्य राघवम्
अब्रुवन् जगतीभर्तुः क्रियतामुदकं पितुः

tataste bhrātarassarve bhṛśamāśvāsya rāghavam
abruvan jagatībhartuḥ kriyatāmudakaṃ pituḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | te sarve: all those | bhrātaraḥ: brothers | āśvāsya: consoled | rāghavam: Rama | bhṛśam: very much | abruvan: and said to him | kriyatām: let us offer libations | udakam: of water | pituḥ: for our father | jagatībhartuḥ: the Lord of the earth. |

TRANSLATION

Then, all those brothers consoled Rama very much and said to him, "Let us offer libations of water for our father, the Lord of the earth."

VERSE 18

सा सीता श्वशुरं श्रुत्वा स्वर्गलोकगतम् नृपम्
नेत्राभ्यामश्रुपूर्णाभ्यामशकन्नेक्षितुं पतिम्

sā sītā śvaśuraṃ śrutvā svargalokagatam nṛpam
netrābhyāmaśrupūrṇābhyāmaśakannekṣituṃ patim

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: Hearing | nṛpam: the king | śvaśuram: her father-in-law | svargagatam: to have | sā sītā: that Seetha | nāśakata: was not able | īkṣitum: to see | patim: her husband | netrābhyām: with eyes | aśrupūrṇābhyām: filled with tears. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing that her father-in-law, that great monarch had ascended to heaven, Seetha was unable to see her husband through eyes filled with tears.

VERSE 19

सान्त्वयित्वा तु तां रामो रुदतीं जनकात्मजाम्
उवाच लक्ष्मणम् तत्र दुःखितो दुःखितम् वचः

sāntvayitvā tu tāṃ rāmo rudatīṃ janakātmajām
uvāca lakṣmaṇam tatra duḥkhito duḥkhitam vacaḥ

SYNONYMS

rāmaḥ: Rama | sāntvayitvā: consoled | tām janakātumajām: that Seetha | rudatīm: who was weeping | duḥkhitaḥ: and himself in grief | uvāca: spoke | vacaḥ: those words | lakṣmaṇam: to Lakshmana | tatra: there | duḥkhitam: who was lamenting. |

TRANSLATION

Rama consoled that Seetha who was weeping and himself stricken with grief, spoke to the lamenting Lakshmana as follows:

VERSE 20

आनयेङ्गुदिपिण्याकं चीरमाहर चोत्तरम्
जलक्रियार्थं तातस्य गमिष्यामि महात्मनः

ānayeṅgudipiṇyākaṃ cīramāhara cottaram
jalakriyārthaṃ tātasya gamiṣyāmi mahātmanaḥ

SYNONYMS

ānaya: bring | iṇgmdi piṇyākam: the crushed pulp of Ingudi Tree | āhara: and bring | cīramca: a piece of bark for being wrapped about my loins | uttaram: and another for being used as an upper garment | gamiṣyāmi: I shall go | jalakriyārtham: to offer libatiouns of water | tātasya: for our father | mahātmanaḥ: the great souled. |

TRANSLATION

"Bring the crushed pulp of Ingudi Tree and bring a piece of bark for being wrapped about my loins and another for being used as my loins and another for being used as an upper garment, so that we may proceed to offer libations of water for our magnanimous father."

VERSE 21

सीता पुरस्ताद्र्वजतु त्वमेनामभितो व्रज
अहं पश्चाद्गमिष्यामि गति र्ह्येषा सुदारुणा

sītā purastādrvajatu tvamenāmabhito vraja
ahaṃ paścādgamiṣyāmi gati rhyeṣā sudāruṇā

SYNONYMS

sītā: (Let) Seetha | vrajatu: walk | purastāt: in the front | tvam: you | vraja: walk | enām abhitaḥ: after her nearby | aham: I | gamiṣyāmi: shall go | paścāt: behind (you) | eṣā: this | sudāruṇāhi: is indeed the most terrible | gatiḥ: procession. |

TRANSLATION

"Let Seetha walk in the front and you follow after her nearby. I shall follow in the rear. This indeed is the most terrible procession.

VERSE 22

ततो नित्यानुगस्तेषां विदितात्मा महामतिः
मृदुर्दान्तस्च शान्तश्च रामे च दृढभक्तिमान्

tato nityānugasteṣāṃ viditātmā mahāmatiḥ
mṛdurdāntasca śāntaśca rāme ca dṛḍhabhaktimān

SYNONYMS

23| tataḥ: then | teṣām: their | nityānugaḥ: faithful companion | sumantraḥ: Sumantra | viditātmā: versed in the spiritual science | mahāmatiḥ: endowed with great intelligence | mṛduḥ: king | dāntaśca: self-controlled | kāntaśca: glorious | dṛḍha bhaktimān: and deeply devoted | rāmeca: to Rama | āśvāsya: consoling | rāghavam: Rama | taiḥ nṛpasutaiḥ sārtham: and those princes | ālambya: took Rama by the hand | avātārayat: helped him descend | śivam: to the auspicious | mandākinīm nādīm: Mandakini River. |

TRANSLATION

Then, their faithful companion Sumantra versed in the spiritual science, endowed with great intelligence, kind, self-controlled and glorious, and deeply devoted to Rama, consoling him and his brothers, took Rama by the hand and helped him descend to the auspicious River Mandakini.

VERSE 24

ते सुतीर्थाम् ततः कृच्छ्रादुपागम्य यशस्विनः
नदीम् मन्दाकिनीम् रम्याम् सदा पुष्पितकाननाम्

te sutīrthām tataḥ kṛcchrādupāgamya yaśasvinaḥ
nadīm mandākinīm ramyām sadā puṣpitakānanām

SYNONYMS

25| tataḥ: then | te: to you. | yaśasvinaḥ: the illustrious | upāgamya: reached | kṛcchāt: painfully | mandākinī: nadii = the River Mandakini | sutīrthām: that stream of sacred fords | ramyām: the enchanting one | sadā puṣpitākānanām: always covered with flowers | āsādya: coming | śivam tīrtham: a blessed | tīrthan: to ford | akardamam: free from mud | niṣicuḥ: offered | udakam: (the lustral) water | rāj^ṇe: to the king | iti: (seeing) thus | tāta: father | etat: May this | bhavatu: prove agreeable |

TRANSLATION

The illustrious Rama and others painfully reached the River Mandakini, that stream of sacred fords, the enchanting one always covered with flowers, coming to a blessed ford, free from mud and offered the lustrual water to the king, saying "Father! May this prove agreeable to you."

VERSE 26

प्रगृह्य च महीपालो जलपूरितमञ्जलिम्
दिशम् याम्यामभिमुखो रुदन्वचनम्ब्रवीत्

pragṛhya ca mahīpālo jalapūritamañjalim
diśam yāmyāmabhimukho rudanvacanambravīt

SYNONYMS

pragṛya: holding together | aṅjalim: in the form of a hollow his palms | jalapūritam: full of water | abhimukhaḥ: and turning his face turned towards | yāmyām: disham = the southern quarter | rudam: weeping | mahīpataḥ: the great prince | abravīt: pronounced | vacanam: the traditional words |

TRANSLATION

Holding together in the form of a hollow his palms full of water and turning his face turned towards the southern quarter and weeping the great prince pronounced the traditional words saying:

VERSE 27

एतत्ते राजशार्दूल विमलं तोयमक्षयम्
पितृलोकगतस्याद्य मद्दत्तमुपतिष्ठतु

etatte rājaśārdūla vimalaṃ toyamakṣayam
pitṛlokagatasyādya maddattamupatiṣṭhatu

SYNONYMS

rāja śārdūla: O | etat toyam: (May) this water | vimalam: without taint | akṣayam: and incorruptible | adya: at the moment | maddattam: that I offer it | te: to you | upatiṣṭhatu: reach you | pitṛlokagatasya: in the region of your ancestors where you are. |

TRANSLATION

O, Tiger among men! May this water without taint and incorruptible at the moment that I offer it to you, reach you in the region of your ancestors where you are."

VERSE 28

ततो मन्दाकिनीतीरात्र्पत्युत्तीर्य स राघवः
पितुश्चकार तेजस्वी निवापं ब्रातृभिः सह

tato mandākinītīrātrpatyuttīrya sa rāghavaḥ
pituścakāra tejasvī nivāpaṃ brātṛbhiḥ saha

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | tejasvī: the glorious | rāghavaḥ: Rama | pratyuttīrya: resending | mandākinī tīrāt: the bank of Mandakini River | bhrātṛbhiḥ saha: along with his brothers | cakāra: offered | nivāpam: balls of food | pituḥ: to his father. |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, the glorious Rama, resending the bank of Mandakini River along with his brothers, offered balls of food to his father.

VERSE 29

ऐङ्गुदम् बदरीमिश्रम् पिण्याकम् दर्भसंस्तरे
न्यस्य रामस्स दुःखार्तो रुदन्वचनमब्रवीत्

aiṅgudam badarīmiśram piṇyākam darbhasaṃstare
nyasya rāmassa duḥkhārto rudanvacanamabravīt

SYNONYMS

saḥ rāmaḥ: that Rama | nyasya: placed | piṅyākam aingudam: the pulp of the Ingudi tree | badarī miśram: mixed with (the pulp of) plums | darbha samstare: on a mat of kusa grass | duḥkhārtaḥ: and overcome with sadness | rudan: weeping | abravīt: spoke | vacanam: these words. |

TRANSLATION

Rama placed the pulp of the Ingudi tree mixed with the pulp of plums on a mat of Kusa grass and overcome with sadness, weeping, spoke the following words:

VERSE 30

इदम्भुङ्क्ष्व महाराज प्रीतो यदशना वयम्
यदन्नः पुरुषो भवति तदन्ना स्तस्य देवताः

idambhuṅkṣva mahārāja prīto yadaśanā vayam
yadannaḥ puruṣo bhavati tadannā stasya devatāḥ

SYNONYMS

mahārāja: O | prītaḥ: be pleased | bhuṅjva: to partake | idam: of this | vayam yadaścanāḥ: which we eat | yadannaḥ puruṣaḥ: for | tadannāh: is also consumed | tasya: by his | devatāḥ: gods. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Great King! Be pleased to partake of this, which we eat for, that which man eats, is also consumed by his gods."

VERSE 31

ततस्तेनैव मार्गेण प्रत्युत्तीर्य नदीतटात्
आरुरोह नरव्याघ्रो रम्यसानुं महिधरम्

tatastenaiva mārgeṇa pratyuttīrya nadītaṭāt
āruroha naravyāghro ramyasānuṃ mahidharam

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | naravyāghraḥ: Rama the tiger among men | pratyuttīrya: re-ascending | tena mārgeṇaiva: by the same path | nadī taṭāt: on the banks of the river | āruroha: rose up | ramyasānum: the charming summit | mahīdharam: of (Chirakuta) mountain. |

TRANSLATION

Rama the tiger among men then re-ascending by the same path on the banks of the river reached the charming summit of Chitrakuta mountain.

VERSE 32

ततः पर्णकुटीद्वारमासाद्य जगतीपतिः
परिजग्राह बाहुभ्यामुभौ भरतलक्ष्मणौ

tataḥ parṇakuṭīdvāramāsādya jagatīpatiḥ
parijagrāha bāhubhyāmubhau bharatalakṣmaṇau

SYNONYMS

jagatīpatiḥ: Rama the Lord of the earth | tataḥ: then | āsādya: gaining | parṇakuṭīra dvāram: the door of his leafy hut | parijagrāha: embraced | ubhau: both | bharata lakṣmanau: Bharata and Lakshmana | bāhubhyām: with his arms. |

TRANSLATION

Gaining the door of his leafy hut, Rama the Lord of the earth then embraced Bharata and Lakshmana with his arms.

VERSE 33

तेषां तु रुदतां शब्दात्प्रतिश्रुत्को।अभवद्गिरौ
भ्रात्र्^ऊ सह वैदेह्या सिंहानामिव नर्धताम्

teṣāṃ tu rudatāṃ śabdātpratiśrutko|abhavadgirau
bhrātr^ū saha vaidehyā siṃhānāmiva nardhatām

SYNONYMS

śabdāt: which sounded | rudatām: of the cry | teṣām bhrātṛiṇām: of those brothers | vaidehyā saha: with Seetha | nardatām simhānāmiva: like the roaring of lions | abhavat: created | pratiśrutkaḥ: and echo | giron: in the mountain. |

TRANSLATION

From the sound of the cry of those brothers with Seetha, which resembled like the roaring of lions rose an echo in the mountain.

VERSE 34

महाबलानाम् रुदताअं कुर्वतामुदकं पितुः
विज्ञाय तुमुलं शब्दम् त्रस्ता भरतसैनिकाः

mahābalānām rudatāaṃ kurvatāmudakaṃ pituḥ
vijñāya tumulaṃ śabdam trastā bharatasainikāḥ

SYNONYMS

viz^ṇāya: hearing | tumulam: the tumultuous | śabdam: clamour | mahābalānām: by those mighty heroes | rudatām: as | kurvatām: they completed | udakam: the libations of water | putuḥ: for their father | bharata sainikāḥ: Bharata's army | trastāḥ: got alarmed. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the tumultuous clamour by those mighty heroes as, weeping they completed the libations of water to their father, Bharata's army got alarmed.

VERSE 35

आब्रुवंश्चापि रामेण भरतस्संगतो ध्रुवम्
तेषामेव महाशब्दः शोचतां पितरं मृतम्

ābruvaṃścāpi rāmeṇa bharatassaṃgato dhruvam
teṣāmeva mahāśabdaḥ śocatāṃ pitaraṃ mṛtam

SYNONYMS

abruvanca api: (hose troops of Bharata) also said | dhruvam: Assuredly | bharataḥ: Bharata | samgataḥ: has joined | rāmeṇa: with Rama | mahān: (this is) a great | śabdaḥ: sound | teṣāmeva: only of their | śocatām: wailing | mṛtam: for their dead | pitaram: father. |

TRANSLATION

Those troops of Bharata also said, "Assuredly, Bharata has joined Rama and this is a great sound only of their wailing, as they mourn for their dead father."

VERSE 36

अथ वासान्परित्यज्य तं सर्वे।अभिमुखाः स्वनम्
अ प्येकमनसो जग्मुर्यथास्थानम् प्रधाविताः

atha vāsānparityajya taṃ sarve|abhimukhāḥ svanam
a pyekamanaso jagmuryathāsthānam pradhāvitāḥ

SYNONYMS

atha: then | parityajya: leaving | vāsān: their tents | sarve: all of them | eka manasaḥ api: having but one thought | jagmuḥ: went | pradhāvitāḥ: running | abhimukhāh: in the direction of | tam svanam: that sound | yathāsthānam: instantly. |

TRANSLATION

Leaving their tents all of them having but one thought, went running in the direction of that sound instantly.

VERSE 37

हयैरन्ये गजैरन्ये रथैरन्ये स्वलम्कृतैः
सुकुमारास्तथैवान्ये पद्भिरेव नरा ययः

hayairanye gajairanye rathairanye svalamkṛtaiḥ
sukumārāstathaivānye padbhireva narā yayaḥ

SYNONYMS

anye: some | hayaiḥ: on their horses | gajaiḥ: on their elephants | rathaiḥ: in their chariots | svalankṛtaiḥ: covered with ornaments | sukumārāḥ: (while) the youthful | narāḥ: people | yayuḥ: went | padbhideva: on foot. |

TRANSLATION

Some went on their horses, some others on their elephants, some in their chariots covered with ornaments while the youthful people went on foot.

VERSE 38

अचिरप्रोषितम् रामम् चिरविप्रोषितं यथा
द्रष्टुकामो जनस्सर्वो जगाम सहसाश्रमम्

aciraproṣitam rāmam ciraviproṣitaṃ yathā
draṣṭukāmo janassarvo jagāma sahasāśramam

SYNONYMS

draṣṭukāmaḥ: In their longing to see | rāmām: Rama | acira proṣitam: whose absence though recent | cira proṣitam: seemed so long for them | sarvaḥ: the whole | janaḥ: people | sahasā jagāma: ran | āśramam: towards the hermitage. |

In their longing to see Rama, whose absence though recent, seemed so long a period for them, the whole people ran towards the hermitage.

VERSE 39

भ्रात्रूणां त्वरितास्तत्र द्रष्टुकामास्समागमम्
युयुर्बहुविधैर्यानैः खरनेविस्वनाकुलैः

bhrātrūṇāṃ tvaritāstatra draṣṭukāmāssamāgamam
yuyurbahuvidhairyānaiḥ kharanevisvanākulaiḥ

SYNONYMS

draṣṭukāmāḥ: eager to see | bhrātṛiṇām: those brothers | samāgamam: re united | tatra: there | yayuḥ: they went | tvaritāḥ: hastily | bhuvidhaiḥ: by various means | yānaiḥ: of transport | khura namisvanākulaiḥ: like hoofed animals and wheeled vehicles. |

TRANSLATION

Eager to see those brothers re-united there, they went hastily by various means of transport, either by hoofed animals or by wheeled vehicles.

VERSE 40

सा भूमिर्बहुभिर्यानै खरनेमिसम्रहता
मुमोच तुमुलं शब्दं द्यौरिवाभ्रसमागमे

sā bhūmirbahubhiryānai kharanemisamrahatā
mumoca tumulaṃ śabdaṃ dyaurivābhrasamāgame

SYNONYMS

samāhatā: trodden | bahubhiḥ: by many | yānaiḥ: vehicles | khuranemi: beasts and chariots | sā bhūmiḥ: that land | mumoca: emitted | tumulam: a tumultuous | śabdam: noise | dyouriva: as sky | abhra samāgame: during the conjunction of clouds. |

TRANSLATION

Trodden by many vehicles, beasts and chariots, that land emitted a tumultuous noise, as a sky during the conjunction of clouds.

VERSE 41

तेन वित्रासिता नागाः करेणुपरिवारिताः
आवासयन्तो गन्धेन जग्मुरन्यद्वनम् ततः

tena vitrāsitā nāgāḥ kareṇuparivāritāḥ
āvāsayanto gandhena jagmuranyadvanam tataḥ

SYNONYMS

vitrāsitāḥ: frightened | ena: by that noise | nāgāḥ: the wild elephants | kareṇu parivāritāḥ: surrounded by female elephants | āvāsayantaḥ: perfuming the quarters | gandhena: with the scent of their ichor | jagmuḥ: went | tataḥ: from there. |

TRANSLATION

Frightened by that noise, the wild elephants, surrounded by female elephants, perfuming the quarters with teh scent of their ichor, went to another wood from there.

VERSE 42

वराहवृकसम्घाश्च सिंहाश्च महिषाः सर्पवानराः
व्याघ्रगोकर्णगवयाः वित्रेसुः पृषतैस्सह

varāhavṛkasamghāśca siṃhāśca mahiṣāḥ sarpavānarāḥ
vyāghragokarṇagavayāḥ vitresuḥ pṛṣataissaha

SYNONYMS

varāha vṛka simhāśca: Boars | mahiṣāḥ: buffaloes | sarpa vānarāḥ: snakes | vyāghra gokarṇa gavayāḥ: tigers | vṛṣataiḥ saha: along with spotted deer | vitresuḥ: felt frightened. |

TRANSLATION

Boars, wolves and lions, buffaloes, snakes, monkeys, tigers, Gokarnas and Gavayas (two distinctive species of deer) along with spotted deer felt frightened.

VERSE 43

रथाङ्गसाह्वा नत्यूह हंसाः कारण्डवाः प्लवाः
तथा पुंस्कोकोलाः क्रौञ्च विसम्ज्ञा भेजिरे दिशः

rathāṅgasāhvā natyūha haṃsāḥ kāraṇḍavāḥ plavāḥ
tathā puṃskokolāḥ krauñca visamjñā bhejire diśaḥ

SYNONYMS

rathāṅgasāhvāḥ: the ruddy gooses | natyūhāḥ: water-fowls | hamsāḥ: swans | kārṅḍavāḥ: karandavas (a sort of ducks) | plavāḥ: herons | tathā: and | pumskokilāh: male cuckoos | krouṅcāh: and cranes | bhejire: made it | diśaḥ: to various | visaṅñāḥ: utterly confused. |

TRANSLATION

The ruddy gooses, water-fowls, swans, Karandavas ( a sort of ducks), herons, male cuckoos and cranes, utterly confused made it to various directions.

VERSE 44

तेन शब्देन वित्रस्तैराकासं पक्षिभिर्वऋतम्
मनुष्यैरावृता भूमिरुभयम् प्रबभौ त दा

tena śabdena vitrastairākāsaṃ pakṣibhirvaṛtam
manuṣyairāvṛtā bhūmirubhayam prababhau ta dā

SYNONYMS

ākāśam: the sky | vṛtam: filled | pakṣibhiḥ: with birds | vitrastaiḥ: that had been frightened | tena śabdena: by that noise | bhūmiḥ: and the earth | āvṛtāḥ: covered | manuṣaiḥ: with men | ubhayam: both | tadā: then | prababhau: looked beautiful. |

TRANSLATION

The sky filled with birds that had been frightened by that noise and the earth covered with men, both looked beautiful at that moment.

VERSE 45

तत्तस्तं पुरुषव्याघ्रम् यशस्विन मकीलम्षम्
आसीनं स्थण्डिले रामम् ददर्श सहसा जनः

tattastaṃ puruṣavyāghram yaśasvina makīlamṣam
āsīnaṃ sthaṇḍile rāmam dadarśa sahasā janaḥ

SYNONYMS

sahasā: suddenly | janaḥ: the people | tataḥ: then | dadarśa: beheld | yaśasvinam: the illustrious | rāmam: Rama | āsīnam: sitting | sthaṅḍile: on the bare earth. |

TRANSLATION

Suddenly then, the people beheld the illustrious and the sinless Rama, sitting on the bare earth.

VERSE 46

विगर्हमाणः कैकेयीं मन्थरासहितामपि
अभिगम्य जनो रामम् बाष्पपूर्णमुखो।अभवत्

vigarhamāṇaḥ kaikeyīṃ mantharāsahitāmapi
abhigamya jano rāmam bāṣpapūrṇamukho|abhavat

SYNONYMS

vigarhamāṇaḥ: Abusing | kaikeyīm: Kaikeyi | mantharā sahitam api: along with even Manthara | janaḥ: those people | abhavet: turned up | bāṣpa pūrṇa mukhaḥ: with their faces bathed in tears | abhigamya: (while) approaching | rāmam: Rama. |

TRANSLATION

Abusing Kaikeyi and Manthara, those people turned up with their faces bathed in tears. while approaching Rama.

VERSE 47

तान्नरान् बाष्पपूर्णाक्षान् समीक्ष्यथ सुदुःखितान्
पर्यष्वजत धर्मज्ञः पितृवन्मातृवच्च नः

tānnarān bāṣpapūrṇākṣān samīkṣyatha suduḥkhitān
paryaṣvajata dharmajñaḥ pitṛvanmātṛvacca naḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that Rama | dharmajṅaḥ: knowing what was right | atha: then | samīkṣya: seeing | tān marān: those people | suduḥkhitān: thus deeply afflicted | bāṣpa pūrnākṣān: their eyes suffused with tears | pariṣvajata: embraced them | pitṛvat: like their father | mātṛvacca: and mother. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing those people thus deeply afflicted their eyes suffused with tears, Rama knowing what was right, embraced them like their father and mother.

VERSE 48

स तत्र कांश्चित् परिषन्वजे नरान्
नराश्च केचित्तु तमभ्यवादयन्
चकार सर्वान् सवयस्यबान्धवान्
यथार्ह मासाद्य तदा नृपात्मजः

sa tatra kāṃścit pariṣanvaje narān
narāśca kecittu tamabhyavādayan
cakāra sarvān savayasyabāndhavān
yathārha māsādya tadā nṛpātmajaḥ

TRANSLATION

Rama embraced some men there, while some others offered salutations to him. Approaching them on that occasion, the king's son received them all including his friends and companions.

VERSE 49

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे त्र्युत्तरशततमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye ayodhyākāṇḍe tryuttaraśatatamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that | svanaḥ: tumult | teṣām mahātmanām: of those magnanimous persons | rudatām: lamenting | tatra: there | anuninādayan: resounded | bhuvamca: over the earth | kamca: and in the sky | girīṇām guhāśca: (reverberating) through the mountain caves | diśaśca: and in all quarters | praśruśruve: heard | santatam pratimaḥ: like the continuous | mṛdaṅga ghoṣa: beating of drums. |

TRANSLATION

The tumult of those magnanimous persons lamenting, resounded over the earth and in the sky, reverberating through the mountain caves and in all quarters like the continuous beating of drums.
