VERSE 1

अथ रात्र्याम् व्यतीतायाम् अवसुप्तम् अनन्तरम्
प्रबोधयाम् आस शनैः लक्ष्मणम् रघु नन्दनः

atha rātryām vyatītāyām avasuptam anantaram
prabodhayām āsa śanaiḥ lakṣmaṇam raghu nandanaḥ

SYNONYMS

atha: Then | raghu nandanaḥ: Rama | śanaiḥ: gently | prabodhayām āsa: woke up | lakśmaṇami: Lakshmana | avasuptam: who was sleeping | anantaram: uninterruptedly | rātryām: (even when) the night | atītāyām: was passing away. |

TRANSLATION

Then, Rama gently woke up Lakshmana, who was sleeping without break, even when the night was passing away.

VERSE 2

सौमित्रे शृणु वन्यानाम् वल्गु व्याहरताम् स्वनम्
सम्प्रतिष्ठामहे कालः प्रस्थानस्य परम् तप

saumitre śṛṇu vanyānām valgu vyāharatām svanam
sampratiṣṭhāmahe kālaḥ prasthānasya param tapa

SYNONYMS

saumitre: Oh | ḻakśmana! śṛṇu: hear | vanyānām: of the wild animals | vyāharatām: resounding | valgu: beautifully | kālaḥ: (It is) time | prasthānasya: for the journey | sampratiṣṭhāmahe: let us start. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, Lakshmana! Hear the sound of wild animals, resounding beautifully. It is time for our journey. Let us start."

VERSE 3

स सुप्तः समये भ्रात्रा लक्ष्मणः प्रतिबोधितः
जहौ निद्राम् च तन्द्रीम् च प्रसक्तम् च पथि श्रमम्

sa suptaḥ samaye bhrātrā lakṣmaṇaḥ pratibodhitaḥ
jahau nidrām ca tandrīm ca prasaktam ca pathi śramam

SYNONYMS

saḥ lakśmaṇaḥ: that Lakshmana | suptaḥ: who was sleeping | pratibodhitaḥ: being woken up | bhrātrā: by his brother | samaye: at the right time | jahau: relinquished | nidrām ca: sleep | tandrīm ca: sloth | śramam ca: and strain | prasaktam: resulted | pathi: on the way. |

TRANSLATION

That Lakshmana who was sleeping, being woken up by his brother at the right moment, had relinquished sleep, sloth and strain which resulted on the way.

VERSE 4

ततौत्थाय ते सर्वे स्पृष्ट्वा नद्याः शिवम् जलम्
पन्थानम् ऋषिणा उद्दिष्टम् चित्र कूटस्य तम् ययुः

tatautthāya te sarve spṛṣṭvā nadyāḥ śivam jalam
panthānam ṛṣiṇā uddiṣṭam citra kūṭasya tam yayuḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | te sarve: all of them | utthāya: raised up | spṛṣṭvā: touched | śivam: the auspicious | jalam: water | nadyāḥ: of the river | yayuḥ: and proceeded towards | tam: that | citra kūṭasya panthānam: path leading to Chitrakuta | ādiṣṭam: as suggested | ṛṣiṇā: by the sage Bharadwaja. |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, all of them raised up touched the auspicious water (took bath) in the river and proceeded towards the path leading to Chitrakuta mountain, as suggested by the sage Bharadwaja.

VERSE 5

ततः सम्प्रस्थितः काले रामः सौमित्रिणा सह
सीताम् कमल पत्र अक्षीम् इदम् वचनम् अब्रवीत्

tataḥ samprasthitaḥ kāle rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha
sītām kamala patra akṣīm idam vacanam abravīt

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | rāmaḥ: Rama | samprasthitaḥ: who set out | saumitriṇā saha: along with Lakshmana | kāle: at the dawn | abravīt: spoke | idam: these words | sītām: to Seetha | kamala patra akṣīm: whose eyes looked like lotus leaves. |

TRANSLATION

Rama who set out along with Lakshmana at that dawn, spoke as follows to Seetha whose eyes looked like lotus leaves.

VERSE 6

आदीप्तान् इव वैदेहि सर्वतः पुष्पितान् नगान्
स्वैः पुष्पैः किंशुकान् पश्य मालिनः शिशिर अत्यये

ādīptān iva vaidehi sarvataḥ puṣpitān nagān
svaiḥ puṣpaiḥ kiṃśukān paśya mālinaḥ śiśira atyaye

SYNONYMS

vaidehi: Oh | ṣītha! Paśya: behold | kimśukān nagān: Kimshuka trees | svaiḥ mālinaḥ: with their diadem | puṣpaiḥ: of flowers | sarvataḥ: all over | puṣpitān: blossoming | śiśira atmaye: in this winter | ādīptān iva: as if they are blazing up. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, Seetha! Behold Kimshuka trees with their diadem of flower blossoming all over, as if they are blazing up, in this winter."

VERSE 7

पश्य भल्लातकान् फुल्लान् नरैः अनुपसेवितान्
फल पत्रैः अवनतान् नूनम् शक्ष्यामि जीवितुम्

paśya bhallātakān phullān naraiḥ anupasevitān
phala patraiḥ avanatān nūnam śakṣyāmi jīvitum

SYNONYMS

paśya: Let at | bhallātakān: these Bhallaataka | phullān: abounding in flowers (cashew nut) trees | avanatān: bent down | phala patraiḥ: with fruits and leaves | anupasevitān: unplucked | śakṣyāmi: we can | nūnam: certainly | jīvitum: live (here). |

TRANSLATION

"Look at these Bhallataka (cashew nut) trees, abounding in flowers and bent down with fruits and leaves, all unplucked by men. We can certainly live here."

VERSE 8

पश्य द्रोण प्रमाणानि लम्बमानानि लक्ष्मण
मधूनि मधु कारीभिः सम्भृतानि नगे नगे

paśya droṇa pramāṇāni lambamānāni lakṣmaṇa
madhūni madhu kārībhiḥ sambhṛtāni nage nage

SYNONYMS

lakśmaṇa: Oh | ḻakśmana! Paśya: behold | nage nage: in every tree | lambamānāni: the hanging | madhūni: honey-combs | droṇa pramāṇāni: with sizes of a water-trough | sambhṛtāni: gathered | madhu kārībhiḥ: by honey-bees. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, Lakshmana! Behold in every tree the hanging honey-combs, with sizes of a water-trough, gathered by honey-bees.

VERSE 9

एष क्रोशति नत्यूहः तम् शिखी प्रतिकूजति
रमणीये वन उद्देशे पुष्प संस्तर सम्कटे

eṣa krośati natyūhaḥ tam śikhī pratikūjati
ramaṇīye vana uddeśe puṣpa saṃstara samkaṭe

SYNONYMS

eṣaḥ: (In) this | ramaṇīye: beautiful | vana uddeśe: forest-region | puṣpa samstara samkaṭe: dense with a scattered mass of flowers | natyūha: a Chataka bird | krośati: is crying | śikhī: (and) a peacock | pratikūśati: is responding | tam: to it. |

TRANSLATION

In this beautiful forest-region, dense with a scattered mass of flowers, a Chataka bird is crying and a peacock is responding to it."

VERSE 10

मातम्ग यूथ अनुसृतम् पक्षि सम्घ अनुनादितम्
चित्र कूटम् इमम् पश्य प्रवृद्ध शिखरम् गिरिम्

mātamga yūtha anusṛtam pakṣi samgha anunāditam
citra kūṭam imam paśya pravṛddha śikharam girim

SYNONYMS

paśya: see | idam: this | citra kūṭam girim: with a number of elephants wide-spread | pakṣi samgha anunāditam: (and) made to resound by a congregation of birds. |

TRANSLATION

"See this Chitrakuta mountain with a high and mighty peak, wide-spread with a multitude of elephants and made to resound by a congregation of birds."

VERSE 11

समभूमितले रम्ये द्रुमैर्बहुभिरावृते
पुण्ये रंस्यामहे तात चित्रकूटस्य कानने

samabhūmitale ramye drumairbahubhirāvṛte
puṇye raṃsyāmahe tāta citrakūṭasya kānane

SYNONYMS

tāta: Oh | brother! ramsyāmahe: we shall sport | kānana: in this forest | citrakūṭasya: of Chitrakuta | sambhūmitale: having a level-ground | ramyet: lovely | āvṛte: extensive with | bahubhiḥ: many | drumāḥ: trees | puṇye: (and) is pure. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, brother! We shall sport in this forest of Chitrakuta, having a level-ground beautifully extensive with many trees and is pure."

VERSE 12

ततः तौ पाद चारेण गच्चन्तौ सह सीतया
रम्यम् आसेदतुः शैलम् चित्र कूटम् मनो रमम्

tataḥ tau pāda cāreṇa gaccantau saha sītayā
ramyam āsedatuḥ śailam citra kūṭam mano ramam

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | tau: Rama and Lakshmana | sītayā saha: along with Seetha | gacchāntau: traveling | cāreṇa: on foot | āsedatuḥ: approached | citra kūṭam śailam: the mountain of Chitrakuta | ramyam: beautiful | mano ramam: and (and) pleasant. |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, Rama and Lakshmana along with Seetha traveling on foot, approached the mountain of Chitrakuta, which was pleasant and lovely.

VERSE 13

तम् तु पर्वतम् आसाद्य नाना पक्षि गण आयुतम्
बहुमूलफलम् रम्यम् सम्पन्नम् सरसोदकम्

tam tu parvatam āsādya nānā pakṣi gaṇa āyutam
bahumūlaphalam ramyam sampannam sarasodakam

SYNONYMS

āsādya: reaching | tam parvatam: that mountain | nānā pakṣi gaṇa āyutam: with various flocks of birds | bahumūlaphalam: with many roots and fruits | ramyam: lovely | sampannam: rich | sarasodakam: in flowing water |

TRANSLATION

Reaching that mountain, with various flocks of birds, with many roots and fruits, lovely and rich in streaming water, Rama said to Lakshmana as follows:

VERSE 14

मनोज्ज़्नो।अयम् तिरिः सौम्य नानाद्रुमलतायतह्
बहुमूलफलो रम्यः स्वाजीवः प्रतिभाति मे

manojzno|ayam tiriḥ saumya nānādrumalatāyatah
bahumūlaphalo ramyaḥ svājīvaḥ pratibhāti me

SYNONYMS

pratibhāti: It is appearing | me: to me | ayam giriḥ: (that) this mountain | svājīvaḥ: yields an easy sustenance | manojñaḥ: which is charming | nānādrumalatāyutaḥ: filled with various kinds of trees and creepers | bahumūlaphalaḥ: with various roots and fruits | ramyaḥ: (and) beautiful | saumya: Oh |

TRANSLATION

"It is appearing to me that this beautiful Chitrakuta mountain yields an easy sustenance, for, it is charmingly filled with various kinds of trees and creepers with different kinds of roots and fruits."

VERSE 15

मनयश्च महात्मानो वसन्त्य शिलोच्चये
अयम् वासो भवेत् तावद् अत्र सौम्य रमेमहि

manayaśca mahātmāno vasantya śiloccaye
ayam vāso bhavet tāvad atra saumya ramemahi

SYNONYMS

saumya: Oh | gentle brother! mahātmānaḥ: high-souled | munayaśca: sages also | vasanti: are staying | asmin śiloccaye: on this mountain | ayam bhavet tāvat: let this become | vāsaḥ: the dwelling | ramemahi: let us have a pleasant resort | atra: here. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, gentle brother! High souled sages are also staying on this mountain. Let this become the dwelling. Let us have a pleasant resort here."

VERSE 16

इति सीता च रामश्च लक्ष्मणश्च कृताञ्जलिः
अभिगम्याश्रमम् सर्वे वाल्मीकि मभिवादयन्

iti sītā ca rāmaśca lakṣmaṇaśca kṛtāñjaliḥ
abhigamyāśramam sarve vālmīki mabhivādayan

SYNONYMS

iti: after deciding thus | sītā ca: Seetha | rāmaśca: Rama | lakṣmaṇaśca: and Lakshmana | sarve: all | kṛtāñjaliḥ: with joined palms | abhigamya: approached | āśramam: the hermitage | abhivādayan: and offered salutation | vālmīkim: to the sage Valmiki. |

TRANSLATION

After deciding thus Seetha, Rama and Lakshmana all with joined palms approached the hermitage and offered salutation to the sage Valmiki.

VERSE 17

तान्महर्षिः प्रमुदितः पूजयामास धर्मवित्
आस्यतामिति चोवाच स्वागतम् तु निवेद्य च

tānmaharṣiḥ pramuditaḥ pūjayāmāsa dharmavit
āsyatāmiti covāca svāgatam tu nivedya ca

SYNONYMS

maharṣiḥ: the great sage Valmiki | dharmavit: who knew what is right | pramuditaḥ: full of delight | pūjayāmāsa: honoured | tān: them | nivedya: offered | svāgatam: cordial welcome | uvāca: and requested (them) | āsyatām iti: to sit. |

TRANSLATION

The great sage Valmiki, who knew what is right, full of delight, treated them with honour, offered cordial welcome and requested them to sit.

VERSE 18

ततो।अब्रवीन्महाबाहुर्लकमणम् लक्ष्मणाग्रजः
सम्निवेद्य यथान्याय मात्मानमृष्ये प्रभुः

tato|abravīnmahābāhurlakamaṇam lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ
samnivedya yathānyāya mātmānamṛṣye prabhuḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | lakśmaṇāgrajaḥ: Rama | prabhuḥ: the lord | mahābāhuḥ: with mighty arms | yathānyāyam: in accord with tradition | samnivedya: report | ṛṣaye: to the ascetic | ātmānām: all that concerned them | abravīt: spoke | lakśmaṇam: to Lakshmana (as follows) |

TRANSLATION

Then Rama, the lord with mighty arms, in accord with tradition, reported to the ascetic all that concerned them and spoke to Lakshmana as follows:

VERSE 19

लक्ष्मण आनय दारूणि दृढानि च वराणि च
कुरुष्व आवसथम् सौम्य वासे मे अभिरतम् मनः

lakṣmaṇa ānaya dārūṇi dṛḍhāni ca varāṇi ca
kuruṣva āvasatham saumya vāse me abhiratam manaḥ

SYNONYMS

lakśmaṇa: Lakshmana | saumya: the gentle brother! aanaya = bring | dṛḍhāni: strong | varāṇi ca: selected | dārūṇi: timber | kuruṣva: (and) construct | āvasatham: a dwelling | me manaḥ: my mind | abhiratam: is fascinated | vāse: in dwelling (here) |

TRANSLATION

Lakshmana, my gentle brother! Bring strong and choicest timber and construct a dwelling. My mind is fascinated in dwelling here."

VERSE 20

तस्य तत् वचनम् श्रुत्वा सौमित्रिर् विविधान् द्रुमान्
आजहार ततः चक्रे पर्ण शालाम् अरिम् दम

tasya tat vacanam śrutvā saumitrir vividhān drumān
ājahāra tataḥ cakre parṇa śālām arim dama

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | tat vacanam: those words tasya = of Rama | saumitriḥ: lakshmaNa | ājahāra: brought | vividhān: various kinds | drumān: of trees | tataḥ: thereafter | arimdhān: he | cakre: constructed | parṇa śālām: a leaf-hut. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those words of Rama, Lakshmana brought various kinds of trees. Thereafter, he the annihilator of enemies, constructed a leaf-hut.

VERSE 21

ताम् निष्ठताम् बद्धकटाम् दृष्ट्वा रमः सुदर्शनाम्
शुश्रूषमाणम् एक अग्रम् इदम् वचनम् अब्रवीत्

tām niṣṭhatām baddhakaṭām dṛṣṭvā ramaḥ sudarśanām
śuśrūṣamāṇam eka agram idam vacanam abravīt

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | tām: that hut | niṣṭhitām: which was firmly built | baddhakaṭām: and thatched | sudarśanām: and beautiful to look at | rāmaḥ: Rama | abravīt: spoke | idam vacanam: these words (to Lakshmana) shushruuSamaaNam = who listened to the command | eka agram: and closely attentive. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing that hut, which was firmly built and thatched as well as beautiful to look at, Rama spoke the following words to Lakshmana who listened to his command and who was closely attentive to him:

VERSE 22

ऐणेयम् मांसम् आहृत्य शालाम् यक्ष्यामहे वयम्
कर्त्व्यम् वास्तुशमनम् सौमित्रे चिरजीवभिः

aiṇeyam māṃsam āhṛtya śālām yakṣyāmahe vayam
kartvyam vāstuśamanam saumitre cirajīvabhiḥ

SYNONYMS

saumitre: Oh | āhṛtya: being | aiṇeyam māmsam: bring meat of the antelope | vayam: we | yakśyāmahe: shall worship | śālām: (this) leaf-hut | vāstuśamanam: purifactory ceremony on entering the house | kartavyam: on entering the | cirajīvibhiḥ: by those who wish to live long. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, Lakshmana! Bring the meat of an antelope. We shall perform a purifactory ceremony while entering the house. Which is to be done by those who wish to live long."

VERSE 23

मृगम् हत्वा।अ।अनय क्षिप्रम् लक्ष्मणेह शुभेक्षण
कर्तव्यः शास्त्रदृष्टो हि विधिर्दर्ममनुस्मर

mṛgam hatvā|a|anaya kṣipram lakṣmaṇeha śubhekṣaṇa
kartavyaḥ śāstradṛṣṭo hi vidhirdarmamanusmara

SYNONYMS

śubhekśaṇa: Oh | lakśmaṇa: Lakshmana! | hatvā: killing | mṛgam: the antelope | kṣipram: quickly | anaya: bring | iha: here | vidhiḥ: the prescribed rite | śāstra dṛṣṭaḥ: according to scriptural point of view | kartavyaḥ hi: indeed is to be done | anusmara: keep in mind | dharmam: the sacred obligation." |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, large-eyed Lakshmana! Killing the antelope quickly, bring it here. The prescribed rite according to scriptural point of view indeed is to be performed. Keep in mind the sacred obligation."

VERSE 24

भ्रातुर्वचन माज्ञाय लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा
चकार स यथोक्तम् च तम् रामः पुनरब्रवीत्

bhrāturvacana mājñāya lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā
cakāra sa yathoktam ca tam rāmaḥ punarabravīt

SYNONYMS

saḥ lakśmaṇaḥ: that Lakshmana | paravīrahā: the slayer of enemies | āñāya: understanding | bhrātruḥ: his brother's | vacanam: words | cakāra: acted | yathoktamca: as instructed | rāmaḥ: Rama | abravīt: spoke | punaḥ: again | tam: to him (as follows). |

TRANSLATION

Lakshmana the slayer of enemies, understanding his brother's words, acted as instructed. Rama spoke again to Lakshmana as follows.

VERSE 25

इणेयम् श्रपयस्वैतच्च्चालाम् यक्ष्यमहे वयम्
त्वरसौम्य मुहूर्तो।अयम् ध्रुवश्च दिवसो।अप्ययम्

iṇeyam śrapayasvaitacccālām yakṣyamahe vayam
tvarasaumya muhūrto|ayam dhruvaśca divaso|apyayam

SYNONYMS

saumya: Oh | śrapayasva: boil | etat: this | aiṇeyam: antelope's meat | vayam: we | yakśyāmahe: shall worship | śālām: the leaf-hut | ayam: (and) this | divasaḥ: day | muhūrtaḥ api: instant also | dhruvaḥ: are of a distinctive character | tvara: be quick. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, gentle brother! Boil this antelope's meat. We shall worship the leaf-hut. This day and this instant also are of a distinctive character. Be quick."

VERSE 26

स लक्ष्मणः कृष्ण मृगम् हत्वा मेध्यम् पतापवान्
अथ चिक्षेप सौमित्रिः समिद्धे जात वेदसि

sa lakṣmaṇaḥ kṛṣṇa mṛgam hatvā medhyam patāpavān
atha cikṣepa saumitriḥ samiddhe jāta vedasi

SYNONYMS

atha: then | saḥ lakśmaṇaḥ: that Lakshmana | pratāpavān: the strong man | saumitriḥ: and son of Sumitra | hatvā: killing | medhyam: the holy | kṛṣṇa mṛgam: black antelope | cikṣepa: tossed | jāta vedasi: in a fire | samiddhe: ignited. |

TRANSLATION

Then, Lakshmana the strong man and son of Sumitra, killing a holy back antelope, tossed it in an ignited fire.

VERSE 27

तम् तु पक्वम् समाज्ञाय निष्टप्तम् चिन्न शोणितम्
लक्ष्मणः पुरुष व्याघ्रम् अथ राघवम् अब्रवीत्

tam tu pakvam samājñāya niṣṭaptam cinna śoṇitam
lakṣmaṇaḥ puruṣa vyāghram atha rāghavam abravīt

SYNONYMS

parijñāya: feeling certain | pakvam: it is cooked | niṣṭaptam: and heated thoroughly | cinna śoṇitam: with no blood remaining | lakśmaṇaḥ: Lakshmana | atha: thereafter | abravīt: spoke | rāghavam: to Rama | puruṣa vyāghram: the lion among men (as follows). |

TRANSLATION

Feeling certain that it is cooked and heated thoroughly with no blood remaining, Lakshmana spoke to Rama the lion among man as follows:

VERSE 28

अयम् कृष्णः समाप्त अन्गः शृतः कृष्ण मृगो यथा
देवता देव सम्काश यजस्व कुशलो हि असि

ayam kṛṣṇaḥ samāpta angaḥ śṛtaḥ kṛṣṇa mṛgo yathā
devatā deva samkāśa yajasva kuśalo hi asi

SYNONYMS

ayam: this | kṛṣṇaḥ mṛgo: black antelope | samāpta angaḥ: with its complete limbs | śṛtaḥ: has been cooked | sarvaḥ: completely | mayā: by me | deva damkāśa: Oh Rama | yajasva: worship | devatāḥ: the deities | asi ahi: you are indeed | kuśalaḥ: skilled (in such act) |

TRANSLATION

"This black antelope, with its complete limbs, has been cooked completely by me. Oh, Rama resembling God! Worship the concerned deity, as you are skilled in that act."

VERSE 29

रामः स्नात्वा तु नियतः गुणवान् जप्य कोविदः
सम्ग्रहेणाकरोत्सर्वान् मन्त्रन् सत्रावसानिकान्

rāmaḥ snātvā tu niyataḥ guṇavān japya kovidaḥ
samgraheṇākarotsarvān mantran satrāvasānikān

SYNONYMS

rāmaḥ: Rama | guṇavān: the virtuous man | japyakovidaḥ: and the learned man in chanting of prayers | snātvā: after taking bath | niyataḥ: with subdned mind | samgraheṇa: briefly | akarot: chanted | sarvān: all | mantran: the sacred scripts | satrāvasānikān: which are to be chanted at the end of a purifactory ceremony. |

TRANSLATION

Rama, the virtuous man and the learned man in chanting of sacred spells, after taking bath and with subdued mind, briefly chanted all the sacred scripts to be chanted at the end of a purifactory ceremony.

VERSE 30

इष्ट्वा देवगणान् सर्वान् विवेशावसथम् शुचिः
बभूव च मनोह्लादो रामस्यामिततेजसः

iṣṭvā devagaṇān sarvān viveśāvasatham śuciḥ
babhūva ca manohlādo rāmasyāmitatejasaḥ

SYNONYMS

iṣṭvā: worshipping | sarvān: all | devatāgaṇān: classes of deities | śuciḥ: and getting purified | viveśa: (Rama) entered | āvasatham: the house | babhūva ca: there was | manohlādaḥ: a heartful joy | rāmasya: in Rama | amita tejasaḥ: with a limitless splendour. |

TRANSLATION

Worshipping all classes of deities and getting himself purified, Rama entered the house. There was a heartful joy in rama, with his limitless splendour.

VERSE 31

वैश्वदेवबलिम् कृत्वा रौद्रम् वैष्णवमेव च
वास्तुसंशमनीयानि मङ्गल्दानि प्रवर्तयन्

vaiśvadevabalim kṛtvā raudram vaiṣṇavameva ca
vāstusaṃśamanīyāni maṅgaldāni pravartayan

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

Having taken bath in the river as prescribed Rama offered oblations to Lord Rudra and Lord Vishnu after offereing tributes to Vaisvadeva. He performed benedictions relating to the purification of house and also a silent prayer as per prescribed rites. He finally offered excellent tributes to the deities, for removing sins.

PURPORT

Comment. Vaishvadeva: A religious ceremony which is to be performed every morning and evening and especially before the mid-day meal, followed by offering of food to the gods especially the god of fire.
VERSE 33

वेदिस्थलविधानानि चैत्यान्यायतनानि च
आश्रमस्यानुरूपाणि स्थापयामास राघवः

vedisthalavidhānāni caityānyāyatanāni ca
āśramasyānurūpāṇi sthāpayāmāsa rāghavaḥ

TRANSLATION

Lakshmana erected altars in all the quarters of the hermitage as was fitting, Chaityas (places for worship of Lord Ganesha and others) and Ayatanas (places for worship of Vishnu and others)

VERSE 34

वन्यैर्माल्यैः फलैर्मूलैः पक्वैर्मांसैर्यथाविधि
अद्भर्जपैश्च वेदोक्तै र्धर्भैश्च ससमित्कुशैः

vanyairmālyaiḥ phalairmūlaiḥ pakvairmāṃsairyathāvidhi
adbharjapaiśca vedoktai rdharbhaiśca sasamitkuśaiḥ

TRANSLATION

Rama and Lakshmana along with Seetha, having auspicious characteristics, satisfied the sirits by crowns of flowers obtained in the forest, by fruits roots and cooked meat, by water, by prayers as uttered in the sacred texts (Vedas), by sacred grass, by fuel and Kusa grass and then entered the auspicious leaf-hut.

VERSE 36

ताम् वृक्ष पर्णच् चदनाम् मनोज्ञाम्
यथा प्रदेशम् सुकृताम् निवाताम्
वासाय सर्वे विविशुः समेताः
सभाम् यथा देव गणाः सुधर्माम्

tām vṛkṣa parṇac cadanām manojñām
yathā pradeśam sukṛtām nivātām
vāsāya sarve viviśuḥ sametāḥ
sabhām yathā deva gaṇāḥ sudharmām

SYNONYMS

sarve: all of them (Seetha | sametāḥ: together | vāsāya: for residential purpose | viviśuḥ: entered | tām: that hut | vṛkṣa parṇacchadanām: thatched with the leaves of trees | manojṅām: which was beautiful | sukṛtām: well-constructed | yathāpradeśam: at a suitable place | vivātām: and protexted from winds | sabhām yathā: as entereing an assembly-hall | sudharmām: called sudharma (in heaven) | devagaṇāḥ: by a group of celestials. |

TRANSLATION

All of them (Seetha, Rama and Lakshmana) together for residential purpose, entered that hut, thatched with leaves of trees, looking beautiful, well-constructed at a suitable site and protected from winds, as if entering an assembly-hall called Sudharma (in heavn) by a group of celestials.

VERSE 37

अनेक नाना मृग पक्षि सम्कुले
विचित्र पुष्प स्तबलैः द्रुमैः युते
वन उत्तमे व्याल मृग अनुनादिते
तथा विजह्रुः सुसुखम् जित इन्द्रियाः

aneka nānā mṛga pakṣi samkule
vicitra puṣpa stabalaiḥ drumaiḥ yute
vana uttame vyāla mṛga anunādite
tathā vijahruḥ susukham jita indriyāḥ

TRANSLATION

Seetha, Rama and Lakshmana who subdued their senses, very happily strolled in that excellent forest, filled with many classes and multitude of beasts and birds, trees having multi-coloured crowns of flowers, and resonating with sounds of elephants in rut and of antelopes.

VERSE 38

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे षट्पञ्चाशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye ayodhyākāṇḍe ṣaṭpañcāśaḥ sargaḥ

TRANSLATION

Delighted and joyful to reach the lovely Chitrakuta mountain and the river Malyavati, provided with good descents and frequented by birds and beasts, Seetha, Rama and Lakshmana shed the agony caused by their exile from the City of Ayodhya.
