VERSE 1

विदर्शिता यदा देवी कुब्जया पापया भृशम्
तदा शेते स्म सा भूमौ दिग्धविद्धेव किन्नरी

vidarśitā yadā devī kubjayā pāpayā bhṛśam
tadā śete sma sā bhūmau digdhaviddheva kinnarī

SYNONYMS

yadā: when | vidarśitā: being wrongly preached | kubjayā: by the hunch backed manthara | bhṛśam pāpayā: who was the most sinful person | tadā: then | sā devī: that kaikeyi | śetesma: lied down | bhumau: on floor | kinnarīva: like a kinnara woman | digdhaviddhā: beaten by poisoned arrow. |

TRANSLATION

Having been thus wrongly preached by that sinful Manthara. Kaikeyi lied down on the floor as a Kinnara woman beaten by a poisoned arrow.

VERSE 2

निश्चित्य मनसा कृत्यम् सा सम्यगिति भामिनी
मन्थरायै श्नः सर्वमाच्चक्षे विचक्षणा

niścitya manasā kṛtyam sā samyagiti bhāminī
mantharāyai śnaḥ sarvamāccakṣe vicakṣaṇā

SYNONYMS

sā bhāminī: that lady | vicakṣaṇā: skilful | niścitya: after deciding | samyak: well | manasā: in mind | iti: thus | kṛtyam: what ought to be done | ācacakśae: said | sarvam: all | mantharāyai: to Manthara | śanaiḥ: slowly. |

TRANSLATION

The skilful Kaikeyi, after deciding in mind what ought to be done told it all slowly to Manthara.

VERSE 3

सा दीना निश्चयं कृत्वा मन्थरावाक्यमोहिता
नागकन्येव निःस्वस्य दीर्घमुष्णं च भामिनी

sā dīnā niścayaṃ kṛtvā mantharāvākyamohitā
nāgakanyeva niḥsvasya dīrghamuṣṇaṃ ca bhāminī

SYNONYMS

mantharāvākyamohitā: stupefied by the words of Manthara | sā bhāminī: that Kaikeyi | dīna: became dejected | niścayam kṛtvā: made firm resolution | niḥśvasya: sighed | dīrgham: deeply | uṣṇamca: and warmly | nāgakanyeva: like maiden-serpant | cintayāmāsa: thought | muhūrtam: for a moment | mārgam: about the way | ātmasukhāvaham: which can lead to her happiness. |

TRANSLATION

Being stupefied by the words of Manthara, that Kaikeyi became dejected, made firm resolve, with deep and warm sigh, like a maiden-serpent and thought for that moment about the ways which can lead to her happiness.

VERSE 4

सा सुहृच्चार्थकामा च तं निशम्य सुनिश्चयम्

sā suhṛccārthakāmā ca taṃ niśamya suniścayam

SYNONYMS

sā mantharā: that Manthara | suhṛcca: who is desirous of getting benefit | niśamya: heard | tam suniścayam: of that firm resolution | babhūva: became | paramaprītā: very much pleased | prapyeva: as if achieved | siddhim: success. |

TRANSLATION

Manthara, who is Kaikeyi's companion and who is desirous of getting benefit, heard of Kaikeyi's firm resolve and became very much pleased as if she achieved success.

VERSE 5

अथ सा रुषिता देवी सम्यक्कृत्वा विनिश्चयम्

atha sā ruṣitā devī samyakkṛtvā viniścayam

SYNONYMS

atha: afterwards | sā abala: that lady | devī: the queen | ruṣitā: being angry | samyak: well | kṛtvā: made | viniścayam: determination | saviveśa: lied down | bhūmau: on floor | niveśya: keeping | bhrukutim: eyebrows contracted | mukhe: in face. |

TRANSLATION

Kaikeyi, being angry and well determined, lied down on the floor with eye brows, knitted in her face.

VERSE 6

ततश्चित्राणि माल्यानि दिव्यान्याभरणानि च

tataścitrāṇi mālyāni divyānyābharaṇāni ca

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | tāni: those | citrāṇi: chaplets | divyāni: beautiful | ābharaṇāni: ornaments | apaviddhām: which were thrown away | kaikeyyā: by Kaikeyi | prapedire: reached | bhūmim: the floor. |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, she threw away her colourful chaplets and beautiful ornaments on to the floor.

VERSE 7

तया तान्यपविद्धानि माल्यान्याभरणानि च

tayā tānyapaviddhāni mālyānyābharaṇāni ca

SYNONYMS

tāni: those | mālyāni: chaplets | ābharāṇica: and ornaments | apaviddhāni: which were thrown away | tayā: by her | aśobhayanta vasudhām: were making the earth shine | yathā: as | nakṣatrāṇi: stars | babhaḥ: in the sky. |

TRANSLATION

Those chaplets and ornaments which were thrown away by her were making the earth shine, as stars to the sky.

VERSE 8

क्रोधागारे निपतिता सा बभौ मलिनाम्बरा

krodhāgāre nipatitā sā babhau malināmbarā

SYNONYMS

baddhvā: tying | ekaveṇīm: single braid of | dṛḍham: tightly | malināmbarā: wearing soiled clothes | : that Kaikeyi | nipatitā: lying down | krodhāre: in chamber of wrath | babhau: shone(was) | kinnarī eva: like kinnara woman. |

TRANSLATION

Tying her single braid of hair tightly over her head and wearing soiled clothes, that Kaikeyi lying down in the chamber of wrath was looking like a Kinnara woman lying down dead.

VERSE 9

आज्ञाप्य तु महाराजो राघवस्याभिषेचन्म्

ājñāpya tu mahārājo rāghavasyābhiṣecanm

SYNONYMS

mahārājaḥ tu: but king Dasaratha | ājñāpya: ordered for | rāghavasya: Rama's | abhiśecanam: coronation | anujñāpya: took permission | upasthānam: from the nearest | praviveśa: entered | nivehsanam: the palace. |

TRANSLATION

King Dasaratha ordered for various arrangements to be made for Rama's coronation, took permission to leave from the elders who were present there and entered his palace.

VERSE 10

अद्य रामाभिषेको वै प्रसिद्ध इति जज्ञिवान्

adya rāmābhiṣeko vai prasiddha iti jajñivān

SYNONYMS

vaśī: Dasaratha who kept all activities under his control | viveśa: entered into | antaḥ puram: inner chambers | ākhyātum: to tell | priyam: the good news | priyārham: to Kaikeyi who was a worthy woman to be told good news. |

TRANSLATION

king Dasaratha, who kept all activates under his control entered into the inner chambers to tell the good news of Rama's coronation to Kaikeyi who was a worthy woman to be told the good news first (thinking that she has not yet heard the news).

VERSE 11

स कैकेय्या गृहं श्रेष्ठं प्रविवेश महायशाः

sa kaikeyyā gṛhaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ praviveśa mahāyaśāḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that Dasaratha | mahāyaśāḥ: with great glory | praviveśa: entered | śreṣṭam: most excellent | kaikeyyāgṛham: Kaikeyi's house | niśākaraḥ ākāśamiva: as the moon into sky | pāṇḍurābhram: with white clouds | rāhuyuktam: containing Rahu |

TRANSLATION

That Dasaratha with vast glory entered Kaikeyi's chambers as moon enters the sky with white clouds.

VERSE 12

शुकबर्हिणसंयुक्तं क्रौञ्चहंसरुतायुतम्

śukabarhiṇasaṃyuktaṃ krauñcahaṃsarutāyutam

SYNONYMS

16| mahārājaḥ: the great king | rājā: Dasaratha | praviśya: entering | tat: that | svam: his | ṟiddhimat: magnificient | antaḥ puram: palace | śukabarahiṇa samyuktam: containing parrots and peacocks | kraunca hamsa rutāyutam: filled with sounds of birds like curlews and swans | vāditraravasanghuṣtam: resonant with sounds of musical instruments | kubjā vāmanikāyutam: consisting of short and hunch backed maid servants | campakāśoka śobhitai: with lovely champaka and ashoka trees | latāgṛhaiḥ: with bowers surrounded by creapers | citragṛhaiḥ ca: with painted rooms | vedikābhiḥ: with altars built with ivory | samāyutam: endowed with vsikshhaiH = trees | nitya puṣpa phalaiḥ: always yielding flowers and fruits | vāpībhiḥ ca: and with wells | upaśobhitam: adorned with vividhaiH = various | dāntarājata sauvarṇaiḥ: of ivory | aunapānaiḥ ca: foods and drinks | vividhaiḥ: various | bhakṣaiḥ ca: snacks | upapannam: endowed with | bhūṣitaiḥ: beautifully adorned | mahārhaiḥ: worthy women | tridivopamam: looking like heaven | nadadarśa: could not find | priyam: beloved | kaikeyīm: Kaikeyi | śayauottame: on the best couch. |

TRANSLATION

King Dasaratha entered his magnificent palace but could not find his beloved kaikeyi on her best couch there. Peacocks and parrots were being reared in that palace, sounds of birds like curlews, and swans were heard around. The place was resonant with sounds of musical instruments. Short and hunch-backed maid-servants were moving here and there. There were bowers surrounded with creepers and lovely champaka and Ashoka trees. There were painted rooms. There were altars built with ivory, silver and gold. There were trees yielding flowers and fruits in all seasons and wells in the middle. There were beautiful seats constructed with ivory, silver and gold. Various types of food, drinks and snacks were made available. That palace was looking like heaven with beautifully adorned women.

VERSE 17

स कामबलसंयुक्तो रत्यर्थं मनुजाधिपः

sa kāmabalasaṃyukto ratyarthaṃ manujādhipaḥ

SYNONYMS

kāmabalasamyuktaḥ: being possessed of power of lust | saḥ: that | manujādhipaḥ: king | ratyartham: with object of sexual pleasure | viṣasāda: was distress | apaśyam: in not seeing | dayitām: beloved | bhāryām: wife | papracacha: and asked also. |

TRANSLATION

Being possessed of power of lust, that king who came with object of sexual pleasure, was distressed in not finding his beloved wife and enquired the people there.

VERSE 18

न ही तस्य पुरा देवी तां वेल्दामत्यवर्तत

na hī tasya purā devī tāṃ veldāmatyavartata

SYNONYMS

purā: in former times | devī: queen Kaikeyi | na atyavartatahi: did not transgress | tasya tām veḻām: such of his time | rājā: the king | na praviveśa ca: did not enter also | śūnyam: empty | gṛham: house | kadācana: at any time. |

TRANSLATION

In former times, Kaikeyi did not keep away herself at that kind of hour, nor the king enter her chambers at any time without her presence.

VERSE 19

ततो गृहगतो राजा कैकेयीं पर्यपृच्छत

tato gṛhagato rājā kaikeyīṃ paryapṛcchata

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | rājā: the king | gṛhagataḥ: who entered the house | paryapṛccata: enquired | yathā puram: as before | avijñāyakaikeyīm apaṇḍitām: about without kuching foolish Kaikeyi | svārtha lipsum: who desired to get her selfish ends. |

TRANSLATION

After entering the house, king Dasaratha enquired with the aid-servants there as before, without knowing about foolish Kaikeyi who desired to get her selfish ends.

VERSE 20

प्रतीहारी त्वथोवाच संत्रस्ता तु क्र्^ताञ्जलिः

pratīhārī tvathovāca saṃtrastā tu kr^tāñjaliḥ

SYNONYMS

atta: then | santrastā: fearful | pratīhārī: female door keeper | kṛtāñjaliḥ: folding hands in supplication | uvāca: said | deva: "Oh | devī: the queen | abhidrutā: ran | krodhāgāram: to chamber of wrath | bṛśam kruddhā: after becoming too much angry". |

TRANSLATION

Then, a female door-keeper fearfully folding her hands in supplication, said: "Oh, king! The queen ran to her chamber of wrath with much anger".

VERSE 21

प्रतीहार्या वचः श्रुत्वा राजा परमदुर्मनाः

pratīhāryā vacaḥ śrutvā rājā paramadurmanāḥ

SYNONYMS

rāja: the king | paramadurmanāḥ: having much disturbed mind | lulitavyākulendriyaḥ: with wavering and agitated senses | punaḥ: again | viṣasāda: was dejected | bhūyaḥ: more | śrutvā: after hearing | pratīhāryāḥ: door keeper's | vacaḥ: words. |

TRANSLATION

That Dasaratha having much disturbed mind already for the absence of Kaikeyi there, became more dejected after hearing the words of door-keeper.

VERSE 22

तत्रतां पतितां भूमौ शयानामतथोचिताम्

tatratāṃ patitāṃ bhūmau śayānāmatathocitām

SYNONYMS

jagatīpatiḥ: Lord of the earth | saḥ: that Dasaratha | apaśyat: saw | tām: her | patitām: lying down | bhūmau: on floor | tatra: there | śayānām: sleeping | atathocitām: in such and improper condition | praptaḥ eva: like burning | duḥkhena: with grief. |

TRANSLATION

King Dasaratha, after seeing Kaikeyi lying down on floor in the chamber of wrath, became tormented with grief.

VERSE 23

स वृद्धस्तरुणीं भार्यां प्राणेभ्यो।अपि गरीयसीम्

sa vṛddhastaruṇīṃ bhāryāṃ prāṇebhyo|api garīyasīm

SYNONYMS

25| vṛddhaḥ: the aged | apāpaḥ: sinless | saḥ: Dasaratha | dadarśa: saw | bhāryām: wife | taruṇīm: a youthful woman | garīyasīm: greater | prāṇebhyao api: than life | pāpasankalpām: with a desire to do sin | latāmiva: like creeper | viniṣkṛttām: completely uprooted | devatāmiva: like angel | patitām: fallen | kinnarīmiva: like Kinnara woman | nirdhūtām: thrown down | apsarasam yathā: like Apsarasa | cytām: expelled | mayāmiva: like illusionism | paribhraṣṭām: dropped off | hariṇīmiva: like female deer | samyatām: tied up. |

TRANSLATION

That Dasaratha, who was sinless, a youthful woman dearer than his life, lying down on the floor with an intent to do sin. At that time, she was looking like a completely uprooted creeper, like a fallen angel, like a thrown down Kinnara woman, like an expelled divine dancer Apsarasa, like a dropped off illusionism and like a female deer tied up in a net.

VERSE 26

क्रेणुमिव दिग्धेन विद्धां मृगयुना वने
महागज इन्वारण्ये स्नेहात्परिममर्श ताम्

kreṇumiva digdhena viddhāṃ mṛgayunā vane
mahāgaja invāraṇye snehātparimamarśa tām

SYNONYMS

mahāgajaḥ iva: like great elephant | araṇye: in a forest | kareṇumiva: a female elephant | viddhām: wounded | dighena: by poisoned arrow | vane: in the grove | parimarśa: (he) touched | tām: her | snehāt: affectionately. |

TRANSLATION

That Dasaratha touched Kaikeyi affectionately, as a great elephant in a forest touches a female elephant which is wounded by poisoned arrow.

VERSE 27

परिमृश्य च पाणिभ्यामभिसंत्रस्तचेतनः
कामी कमलपत्राक्षीमुवाच वनितामिदम्

parimṛśya ca pāṇibhyāmabhisaṃtrastacetanaḥ
kāmī kamalapatrākṣīmuvāca vanitāmidam

SYNONYMS

kāmī: possessed with infatuation | abhisantrasta cetanaḥ: having fearful mind | parimṛśya: touched | kamala patrākṣīm: lotus-eyed | vanitām: woman | pāṇibhyām: with hands | uvāca: spoke | idam: these words. |

TRANSLATION

That Dasaratha, possessed with infatuation and having fearful mind, touched that lotus-eyed woman with his hands and spoke the following words.

VERSE 28

न ते।अहमभिजानामि क्रोधमात्मनि संश्रितम्
देवि केनाभिशप्तासि केन वासि विमानिता

na te|ahamabhijānāmi krodhamātmani saṃśritam
devi kenābhiśaptāsi kena vāsi vimānitā

SYNONYMS

devī: "Oh queen | kalyāṇi: of auspicious qualities! aham = I | na abhijānāmi: do not know | te: your | krodham: anger | samśṛtam: in habited | ātmani: in me | kena: by whom | abhiśaptā asi: you are cursed | kenavā: or by whom | vimānitā asi: you are insulted | idam mama duḥkhāyā: this has become cause for my pain | yat seṣe: that you are resting | pāmsuṣu: on dirty floor." |

TRANSLATION

"Oh queen, of auspicious qualities! I do not know that you are angry with me. Who has cursed or disrespected you? I am pained to see you resting in this way on a dirty floor."

VERSE 29

भूमौ शेषे किमर्थं त्वं मयि कल्याणचेतसि
भूतोपहतचित्तेव मम चित्तप्रमाथिनी

bhūmau śeṣe kimarthaṃ tvaṃ mayi kalyāṇacetasi
bhūtopahatacitteva mama cittapramāthinī

SYNONYMS

mayi kalyāna cetasi: when I have a good sense of mind | kimartham: why | tvam: you | mama ciḥa pramāthinī: hurt my mind | seṣe: by resting | bhūmau: on floor | bhūtopahata citteva: like one who is possessed of a devil. |

TRANSLATION

"when I am here to expend all good to you, why are you hurting my mind by lying down on the floor like the one who is possessed of a devil."

VERSE 30

सन्ति मे कुशला वैद्यास्त्वभितुष्टाश्च सर्वशः
सुखितां त्वां करिष्यन्ति व्याधिमाचक्ष्व भामिनि

santi me kuśalā vaidyāstvabhituṣṭāśca sarvaśaḥ
sukhitāṃ tvāṃ kariṣyanti vyādhimācakṣva bhāmini

SYNONYMS

bhāmini: Oh | k͟haikeyi! me: my | vaidyāḥ: physicians | santi: are there | kuśalāḥ: who are skilled | saravaśaḥ abhiṣṭutāḥ ca: and who are enlogised on all sides | kariṣyanti: who can made | tvām: you | sukśitām: healthy | acakṣva: tell | vyādhim: the sickness. |

TRANSLATION

"There are so many royal physicians who are skilled and famous on all sides. They can make you healthy. Tell me your sickness".

VERSE 31

कस्य वा ते प्रियं कार्यं केन वा विप्रियं कृतम्
कः प्रियं लभतामद्य को वा सुमहदप्रियम्

kasya vā te priyaṃ kāryaṃ kena vā vipriyaṃ kṛtam
kaḥ priyaṃ labhatāmadya ko vā sumahadapriyam

SYNONYMS

kasyavā: to whom | priyam: favour | kāryam: ought to be done | te: by you? kena vaa = by whom | vipriyam: offence | kṛtam: was done? katt = who | labhatām: has to get | adya: now? kovaa = who | sumahat: great | apriyam: offence?' |

TRANSLATION

"To whom do you want a favour to be done? who has offended you? Tell me to whom I have to extend a favour now and to whom I have to do a great offensive act."

VERSE 32

मा रोदीर्मा च कार्षिस्त्वं देवि संपरिशोषणम्

mā rodīrmā ca kārṣistvaṃ devi saṃpariśoṣaṇam

SYNONYMS

33| devi: " oh | quīn! tvam: you | mā rodīḥ: do not weep | mā ca kārṣīḥ: nor make | sampariśoṣaṇam: body dry up | kovā: who | avadhyaḥ: exempt from death | vadhyatām: is to be killed? | vadhyaḥ: worthy of killing | vimucyatām: is to be released? kovaa = who | daridraḥ: a poor person | bhavet: to become | ādhyaḥ: wealthy? dravyavaanvaapi = or a rich man | akiṅicanaḥ: destitute. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, Kaikeyi! Do not weep and get your body dried up. If you tell, I shall kill a person who is exempt from death or shall release a person who is worthy to be killed. I shall make a poor man prosperous or a rich man, destitute".

VERSE 34

अहं चैव मदीयाश्च सर्वे तव वशानुगाः
न ते किंचिदभिप्रायं व्याहन्तुमहमुत्सहे

ahaṃ caiva madīyāśca sarve tava vaśānugāḥ
na te kiṃcidabhiprāyaṃ vyāhantumahamutsahe

SYNONYMS

ahamcaiva: I and | sarvekṣha: all | madīyāḥ: my people | tava vaśāmgāḥ: are submissive to you | aham: I | na utsahe: do not try | vyāhantum: to foil | kiṅcit: even a little of | te: your | abhiprāyam: intention. |

TRANSLATION

"I and all my people are submissive to you. I do not wish to foil even a little of your intention".

VERSE 35

आत्मनो जीवितेनापि ब्रुहि यन्मनसेच्छसि
बलमात्मनि जानन्ती न मां शङ्कितुमर्हसि

ātmano jīvitenāpi bruhi yanmanasecchasi
balamātmani jānantī na māṃ śaṅkitumarhasi

SYNONYMS

brūhi: tell | yat: that which | ichasi: you desire | manasā: from mind | jīvitenāpi: even by life | na arhasi śaṅkitum: to suspect | mām: me | jānantī: as you knew | balam: your strength | ātmani: over me | śape: I keep my oath | sikṛtenāpi: even by righteousness | te: to you | kariṣye: I shall do | tava: your | rītim: liking. |

TRANSLATION

"Tell me that which is desired by your mind to be achieved even at the cost of my life. You need not suspect me, as you very well know your authority over me. I keep my oath on my righteousness that I shall certainly do whatever is liked by you".

VERSE 36

यावदावर्त ते चक्रं तावती मे वसुन्धरा

yāvadāvarta te cakraṃ tāvatī me vasundharā

SYNONYMS

37| me vasundharā: my earth | yāvat tāvati: is as long as | cakram: chariout-wheel | āvartate: revolves | pracīnāḥ: eastern countries | sindhu sauvīrāḥ: Sindhu | saurāṣtrāḥ: Saurastra | dakṣiṇāpathāḥ: sounthern countries | vaṅgāṅga magadhāḥ: Vanga | matsyāḥ: the country of Matsya | kāśi kausalāḥ: kasi and Kausala countries | samṛddhāḥ: are all affluent. |

TRANSLATION

My jurisdiction over this earth stretches out as much to the extent as to the extent a chariot-wheel revolves. Eastern countries, Sindhu, Sauviira and Saurastra countries, as well as countries in the south, Vanga, Anga, Magadha and Matsya countries, Kasi and Kausala countries are all full of riches.

VERSE 38

तत्र जातं बहुद्रव्यं धनधान्य मजाविकम्
ततो वृणीष्व कैकेयि यद्यत्त्वं मनसेच्छसि

tatra jātaṃ bahudravyaṃ dhanadhānya majāvikam
tato vṛṇīṣva kaikeyi yadyattvaṃ manasecchasi

SYNONYMS

tatra: there | dhana dhānyam: gold and grain | ajāvikam: sheep and goats | bahu: various | dravyam: goods | jātam: are produced | kaikeyi: Oh | yadyat: which | tataḥ: fo those | ichasi: do you want | Vṛṇīṣva: to acquire | manasā: from the mind. |

TRANSLATION

In those countries, gold and grain, sheep and goats and all types of goods are produced. Oh, Kaikeyi! which of the goods do you want to acquire?

VERSE 39

किमायासेन ते भीरु उत्तिष्टोत्तिष्ट शोभने
तत्वं मे ब्रूहि कैकेयि यतस्ते भयमागतम्

kimāyāsena te bhīru uttiṣṭottiṣṭa śobhane
tatvaṃ me brūhi kaikeyi yataste bhayamāgatam

SYNONYMS

bīru: "oh | fearful one! kim: what use | āyāsena: by exertion | te: your | śobhane: oh | uttiṣṭha: get up | get up! kaikeyi: Oh | k͟haikeyi! brūhi: tell | me: me | tat: that source of fear | yataḥ: from where | bhayam: fear | āgatam: came | vyapena yisṣyāmi: I shall remove | nīhāramiva: as mist | raśmivān: by sund. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, fearful one! why are you exerted like this? oh, beautiful lady? Get up get up! Oh, Kaikeyi1 Tell me the source of your fear. I shall remove that source as sun sets aside the mist."
