VERSE 1

ततः सुमन्त्रम् ऐक्ष्वाकः पीडितः अत्र प्रतिज्ञया
सबाष्पम् अतिनिह्श्वस्य जगाद इदम् पुनः पुनः

tataḥ sumantram aikṣvākaḥ pīḍitaḥ atra pratijñayā
sabāṣpam atinihśvasya jagāda idam punaḥ punaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | aikṣvākaḥ: Dasaratha | pīditaḥ: squeezed | pratiñayā: by his promise | atra: in this matter | atiniḥśvasya: sighed heavly | sabhāṣpam: with tears | jagāda: spoke | idam: the following words | punaḥ punaḥ: again and again | sumantra: to Sumantra. |

TRANSLATION

Then, Dasaratha the scion of Ikshvaku dynasty, squeezed by his own promise in the matter of sending Rama to exile, sighed heavily with tears and spoke the following words again and agian to Sumantra.

VERSE 2

सूत रत्न सुसम्पूर्णा चतुर् विध बला चमूः
रागवस्य अनुयात्रा अर्थम् क्षिप्रम् प्रतिविधीयताम्

sūta ratna susampūrṇā catur vidha balā camūḥ
rāgavasya anuyātrā artham kṣipram pratividhīyatām

SYNONYMS

sūtaḥ: Oh | ṣumantra! camūḥ: Let a military body | caturvidha balāḥ: consisting of (all the four limbs of the army | ratna sampūrṇā: filled with the best of its kind | pratividhīyatām: be arranged | kṣipram: immediately. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, Sumantra! Let a military body consisting of (all) the four limbs of the arms, filled with the best of its kind, be arranged immediately"

VERSE 3

रूप आजीवा च शालिन्यो वणिजः च महा धनाः
शोभयन्तु कुमारस्य वाहिनीम् सुप्रसारिताः

rūpa ājīvā ca śālinyo vaṇijaḥ ca mahā dhanāḥ
śobhayantu kumārasya vāhinīm suprasāritāḥ

SYNONYMS

rūpājīvāśca: let courtesans | vādinyaḥ: well versed in speaking | vaṇijaśca: merchants | mahādhanāḥ: with great riches | suprasāritāḥ: having exposure for sales | śobhayantu: bestow elegance | vāhinīm: to the forces | kumārasya: of the prince. |

TRANSLATION

"Let courtesans well versed in speaking and merchants with great riches having exposure for extension of sales bestow elegance to the forces of the Prince"

VERSE 4

ये च एनम् उपजीवन्ति रमते यैः च वीर्यतः
तेषाम् बहु विधम् दत्त्वा तान् अपि अत्र नियोजय

ye ca enam upajīvanti ramate yaiḥ ca vīryataḥ
teṣām bahu vidham dattvā tān api atra niyojaya

SYNONYMS

niyojaya: appoint | atra: in this contingent | tānapi: those too | dattvā: by giving | bahudhanam: abundant money | teṣām: to them | yeca: who | upajīvanti: were dependent | enam: on him(Rama) yaishcha = with whom | ramate: he took delight | vīryataḥ: in gallantry. |

TRANSLATION

Appoint in this contingent those too, by giving abundant money to them who were dependent on Rama and on whom he took delight in gallantry"

VERSE 5

आयुधानि च मुख्यानि नागराः शकटानि च
अनुगच्छन्तु काकुत्थ्सम् व्याधाश्चारण्यगोचराः

āyudhāni ca mukhyāni nāgarāḥ śakaṭāni ca
anugacchantu kākutthsam vyādhāścāraṇyagocarāḥ

SYNONYMS

mukhyāni: Let important | āyadhānica: weapons | nāgarāḥ: chiefs of police | śakatānica: and vehicles | vyādhāśca: hunters | āraṇya gocarāḥ: knowing the secret of forest | anugacchantu: accompany | kākutthsam: Rama(scion of Kakutsa) |

TRANSLATION

"Let important weapons, chiefs of police and vehicles, hunters knowing the secrets of forest accompany Rama(scion of Kakutsa)"

VERSE 6

निघ्नन् मृगान् कुन्जराम्ः च पिबम्ः च आरण्यकम् मधु
नदीः च विविधाः पश्यन् न राज्यम् संस्मरिष्यति

nighnan mṛgān kunjarāmḥ ca pibamḥ ca āraṇyakam madhu
nadīḥ ca vividhāḥ paśyan na rājyam saṃsmariṣyati

SYNONYMS

nighnan: Killing | mṛgān: deer | kuṇjarāśca: and elephants | pibamśca: drinking | madhu: honey | araṇyakam: of forest variety | paśyan: seeing | vividhāḥ: various | nadīśca: rivers | na smariṣyati: he would not remember | rājyasya: of sovereignity. |

TRANSLATION

"Killing deer and elephants, drinking forest-honey, seeing various rivers, he would not remember of sovereignty"

VERSE 7

धान्य कोशः च यः कश्चित् धन कोशः च मामकः
तौ रामम् अनुगच्चेताम् वसन्तम् निर्जने वने

dhānya kośaḥ ca yaḥ kaścit dhana kośaḥ ca māmakaḥ
tau rāmam anugaccetām vasantam nirjane vane

SYNONYMS

yaḥ: that which | mānaḥ: belonging to me | dhānyakośaḥ ca: the gravnary | dhanakośaśca: and the treasury | tau: (let) them | anugacchetām: accompany | rāmam: Rama | vasantam: residing | vane: in the forest | nirjane: which is uninhabited. |

TRANSLATION

"Let the granary and the treasury belonging to me be sent to Rama residing in the uninhabited forest."

VERSE 8

यजन् पुण्येषु देशेषु विसृजम्ः च आप्त दक्षिणाः
ऋषिभिः च समागम्य प्रवत्स्यति सुखम् वने

yajan puṇyeṣu deśeṣu visṛjamḥ ca āpta dakṣiṇāḥ
ṛṣibhiḥ ca samāgamya pravatsyati sukham vane

SYNONYMS

pravatsyati: he can live away | sukham: happily | yajan: by performing sacrificial rite | deśeṣu: in places | puṇyeṣu: which are holy | visṛjamśca: and disbursing | āptu dakṣiṇāḥ: appropriate gifts | samāgamya: along with | ṛṣibhiḥ: sages | vane: in the forest. |

TRANSLATION

"Rama can spend his exile happily, by performing sacrificial rite in holy places and disbursing appropriate gifts, along with sages living in the forest "

VERSE 9

भरतः च महा बाहुर् अयोध्याम् पालयिष्यति
सर्व कामैः पुनः श्रीमान् रामः संसाध्यताम् इति

bharataḥ ca mahā bāhur ayodhyām pālayiṣyati
sarva kāmaiḥ punaḥ śrīmān rāmaḥ saṃsādhyatām iti

SYNONYMS

mahābāhuḥ: the mighty armed | bharataśca: Bharata | pālayiṣyati: will rule | ayodhyām: Ayodhya | śrīmān: (let) the glorious | rāmaḥ: Rama | samsādhyatām: be sent | sarvakāmaiḥ saha: along with all objects of enloyments" | iti: thus spoke. |

TRANSLATION

"The mighty armed Bharata will rule Ayodhya. Let the glorious Rama be sent alog with all objects of enjoyment"

VERSE 10

एवम् ब्रुवति काकुत्स्थे कैकेय्या भयम् आगतम्
मुखम् च अपि अगमात् शेषम् स्वरः च अपि न्यरुध्यत

evam bruvati kākutsthe kaikeyyā bhayam āgatam
mukham ca api agamāt śeṣam svaraḥ ca api nyarudhyata

SYNONYMS

kakutthse: while Dasaratha | bruvati: was speaking | evam: thus | bhayam: fear | āgatam: drew near | kaikeyyāḥ: Kaikeyi | mukhamcāpi: here mouth too | āgamat: got | śoṣam: parched | svaraścāpi: her voice also | nyarndhyata: got choked. |

TRANSLATION

While Dasartha was speaking thus, fear drew near Kaikeyi. Her mouth too also got parched. her voice also got choked.

VERSE 11

सा विषण्णा च सम्त्रस्ता कैकेयी वाक्यम् अब्रवीत्
राजानमेवाभिमुखी कैकेयी वाक्यमब्रवीत्

sā viṣaṇṇā ca samtrastā kaikeyī vākyam abravīt
rājānamevābhimukhī kaikeyī vākyamabravīt

SYNONYMS

viṣaṇṇāca: feeling depressed | samtrastā: and apprehensive | mukhena: with her mouth | pariśuṣyatā: fetting parched | abhimukhī: with her face turned | rāmameva: towards the king | sā kaikeyi: that Kaikeyi | abravīt: spoke | vākyam: these words. |

TRANSLATION

Feeling depressed and apprehensive, with her mouth getthing parched and her face turned towards the king, Kaikeyi spoke as follows:

VERSE 12

राज्यम् गत जनम् साधो पीत मण्डाम् सुराम् इव
निरास्वाद्यतमम् शून्यम् भरतः न अभिपत्स्यते

rājyam gata janam sādho pīta maṇḍām surām iva
nirāsvādyatamam śūnyam bharataḥ na abhipatsyate

SYNONYMS

bharataḥ: Bharata | nābhipatsyate: will not accept | rājyam: the kingdom | gatajanam: uninhabited | śūnyam: hollow | niāsvādyatamam: which is absolutely unenjoyable | surām iva: like wine | pītamaṇdām: quaffed of spirituous part | sādho: Oh |

TRANSLATION

"Bharata will not accept the kingdom, which will become uninhabited, hollow and which will be absolutely unenjoyable like wine, quaffed of its spiriteous part, Oh noble soul!"

VERSE 13

कैकेय्याम् मुक्त लज्जायाम् वदन्त्याम् अतिदारुणम्
राजा दशरथो वाक्यम् उवाच आयत लोचनाम्

kaikeyyām mukta lajjāyām vadantyām atidāruṇam
rājā daśaratho vākyam uvāca āyata locanām

SYNONYMS

kaikeyyām: (when) Kaikeyi | muktalajjāyām: who has cast off her shame | vadantyām: was uttering | atidāruṇam: the most cruel words | rājā: king | daśaratha: Dasaratha | uvāca: spoke | vākyam: these words | āyatalocanām: to that lady who has large eyes. |

TRANSLATION

While Kaikeyi who has cast off her shame was thus uttering th emost cruel words, King Dasaratha spoke these words to that lady with large eyes:

VERSE 14

वहन्तम् किम् तुदसि माम् नियुज्य धुरि मा आहिते
अनार्ये कृत्यमार्ब्धम् किम् न पूर्वमुपारुधः

vahantam kim tudasi mām niyujya dhuri mā āhite
anārye kṛtyamārbdham kim na pūrvamupārudhaḥ

SYNONYMS

ahite: Oh | hostile voman! kim: why | tudasi: do you prick | mām: me | vahantam: who is carrying forward | niyujya: while charged | : me | dhuri: with a burden? kim = why | na upārudhaḥ: did you not check | pūrvam: before | kṛtyam: the deed | ārabdham: in the begining(itself) | anārye: Oh the vulgar woman! |

TRANSLATION

Having charged me with a burden, Oh hostile woman, why do you prick me while I am carrying it? Why did you not check before(while asking the boons by putting a condition that Rama should not be allowed to take anything with him) the deed(of sending troups etc with Rama) in the begining itself, Oh the vulgar woman!"

VERSE 15

तस्यैतत्क्रोधसम्युक्तमुक्तम् श्रुत्वा वराङ्गना
कैकेयी द्वि गुणम् क्रुद्धा राजानम् इदम् अब्रवीत्

tasyaitatkrodhasamyuktamuktam śrutvā varāṅganā
kaikeyī dvi guṇam kruddhā rājānam idam abravīt

SYNONYMS

kaikeyyī: Kaikeyi | varāṇganā: the beautiful woman | dviguṇam: doubly | kṛddhā: enraged | śrutvā: in hearing | etat: this word | uktam: spoken | tasya: of Dasaratha | krodhasamyuktam: possessed of anger | abravīt: uttered | idam: these words | rājānām: to the king. |

TRANSLATION

Doubly enraged in hearing this angry question of Dasaratha, Kaikeyi the beautiful woman replied to the king as follows:

VERSE 16

तव एव वंशे सगरः ज्येष्ठम् पुत्रम् उपारुधत्
असमन्जैति ख्यातम् तथा अयम् गन्तुम् अर्हति

tava eva vaṃśe sagaraḥ jyeṣṭham putram upārudhat
asamanjaiti khyātam tathā ayam gantum arhati

SYNONYMS

tava vaśe eva: In your dynasty itself | sagaraḥ: Sagara | upārudhat: cast away | jyeṣṭa putram: his eldest son | dhyātam: called | asamaṇjaḥ iti: as Asamanja | āyam: this Rama(too) | arhati gantum: to go | tathā: like that. |

TRANSLATION

VERSE 17

एवम् उक्तः धिग् इति एव राजा दशरथो अब्रवीत्
व्रीडितः च जनः सर्वः सा च तन् न अवबुध्यत

evam uktaḥ dhig iti eva rājā daśaratho abravīt
vrīḍitaḥ ca janaḥ sarvaḥ sā ca tan na avabudhyata

SYNONYMS

uktaḥ: spoken to | evam: as above | rajā: king | daśarathaḥ: Dasaratha | abravīt: uttered | thik ityeva: as only"shame!" | sarvaḥ: the entire | janaḥ: people | vrīditaḥ: were ashamed | sāca: that Kaikeyi | nāvabudhyata: did not perecive | tam: it. |

TRANSLATION

Spoken to as above, king Dasaratha uttered only a word "Shame!". The entire people there were ashamed. But Kaikeyi did not perceive it"

VERSE 18

तत्र वृद्धो महा मात्रः सिद्ध अर्थो नाम नामतः
शुचिर् बहु मतः राज्ञः कैकेयीम् इदम् अब्रवीत्

tatra vṛddho mahā mātraḥ siddha artho nāma nāmataḥ
śucir bahu mataḥ rājñaḥ kaikeyīm idam abravīt

SYNONYMS

tatra: there | vṛddhaḥ: the aged | śuciḥ: upright | mahāmātraḥ: cheif minister | nāmataḥ: named | siddhārtho nāme: well as Siddhartha | bahumataḥ: who wa shighly esteemed | rāñaḥ: by the king | abravīt: spoke | kaikeyīm: to Kaikeyi | idam: these words. |

TRANSLATION

There, the aged and the upright chief minister siddhartha by name who was highly esteemed by the king, spoke to Kaikeyi these words:

VERSE 19

असमन्जो गृहीत्वा तु क्रीडितः पथि दारकान्
सरय्वाः प्रक्षिपन्न् अप्सु रमते तेन दुर्मतिः

asamanjo gṛhītvā tu krīḍitaḥ pathi dārakān
sarayvāḥ prakṣipann apsu ramate tena durmatiḥ

SYNONYMS

asamṇjaḥtu: but Asamanja | durmatiḥ: the evil-minded | gṛhītvā: catching hold | bālakān: of children | krīdataḥ: playing | pathi: in the street | prakṣipan: throwing | apsu: in waters | sarayvāḥ: of Sarayu river | ramate: took delight | tena: by it. |

TRANSLATION

"Asamanja the evil-minded, catching hold of children playing in the street and throwing them in the waters of saryu river, took delight in it"

VERSE 20

तम् दृष्ट्वा नागरः सर्वे क्रुद्धा राजानम् अब्रुवन्
असमन्जम् वृषीण्व एकम् अस्मान् वा राष्ट्र वर्धन

tam dṛṣṭvā nāgaraḥ sarve kruddhā rājānam abruvan
asamanjam vṛṣīṇva ekam asmān vā rāṣṭra vardhana

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: by watching | tam: him | sarve: all the | nāgarāḥ: citizens | kṛddhāḥ: were angry | abruvan: and spoke | rājānam: to the king | rāṣṭra vardhana: "Oh promoter of the state! vR^iNiishhva = choose | asamṇjam: either Asamanja | ekam: alone | asmānvā: or us. |

TRANSLATION

By watching him, all the citizens were angry and spoke to the king, "choose either to keep yourself Asamanja alone or to preserve us, Oh the promoter of the state!"

VERSE 21

तान् उवाच ततः राजा किम् निमित्तम् इदम् भयम्
ताः च अपि राज्ञा सम्पृष्टा वाक्यम् प्रकृतयो अब्रुवन्

tān uvāca tataḥ rājā kim nimittam idam bhayam
tāḥ ca api rājñā sampṛṣṭā vākyam prakṛtayo abruvan

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereupon | rājā: the king | uvāca: said | tān: to them | kimnimittam: "for what reason | idam bhayam: is this fear? sampR^ishhTaaH = having been asked | rāñā: by the king | tāḥ: those | prakṛtayaścāpi: people also | abruvan: spoke | vākyam: (these) words. |

TRANSLATION

Thereupon the king said to them, "For what reason is this fear? Duly asked by the king, those people also replied these words:

VERSE 22

क्रीडितः तु एष नः पुत्रान् बालान् उद्भ्रान्त चेतनः
सरय्वाम् प्रक्षिपन् मौर्ख्यात् अतुलाम् प्रीतिम् अश्नुते

krīḍitaḥ tu eṣa naḥ putrān bālān udbhrānta cetanaḥ
sarayvām prakṣipan maurkhyāt atulām prītim aśnute

SYNONYMS

eṣaḥ: he | aśnute: obtains | atulām: incomparable | prītim: delight | prakṣipan: by throwing | maurkhyāt: through studpidity | naḥ: our | krīdataḥ: playing | bālān: children | sarayvām: in Sarayn river | udbhrānta cetasaḥ: in a whirled state of mind. |

TRANSLATION

"He obtains incomparable delight by throwing, through stupidity, our playing children in sarayu river in a whirled state of mind."

VERSE 23

स तासाम् वचनम् श्रुत्वा प्रकृतीनाम् नर अधिप
तम् तत्याज अहितम् पुत्रम् तासाम् प्रिय चिकीर्षया

sa tāsām vacanam śrutvā prakṛtīnām nara adhipa
tam tatyāja ahitam putram tāsām priya cikīrṣayā

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | vacanam: the words | tāsām prakṛtīnām: of those people | saḥ narādhipaḥ: that king | tatyāja: abandoned | tam putram: that son | ahitam: repugnant(to his subjects) priyachikiirshhayaa = in a bid to do good | tāsām: to them. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of those poeple, that king abandoned the son repugnant to his subjects, in a bid to do good to them.

VERSE 24

तम् यानम् श्रीघ्रमारोप्य सभार्यम् सपरिच्छदम्
यावज्जीवम् विवास्यो।अयमिति स्वानन्वशात् पिता

tam yānam śrīghramāropya sabhāryam saparicchadam
yāvajjīvam vivāsyo|ayamiti svānanvaśāt pitā

SYNONYMS

pitāḥ: Sagara the father | śīghram: immediately | āropya: arranging to place | tam: him | sabhāryam: along with his wife | saparicchadam: together with their belongings(utensils | yānam: in a vehicle | anvaśāt: instructed | sān: his persons | iti: thus | ayam: "He | vivāsyaḥ: should be exiled | yāvajjīvam: for life." |

TRANSLATION

Arranging immediately to place him along with his wife together with the paraphrenalia (like utensils, implements etc) in a vehicle, the king instructed his persons thus: "He should be exiled for life."

VERSE 25

स फालपिटकम् गृह्य गिरिदुर्गान्यलोडयत्
दिशः सर्वास्त्वनुचरन् स यथा पापकर्मकृत्

sa phālapiṭakam gṛhya giridurgānyaloḍayat
diśaḥ sarvāstvanucaran sa yathā pāpakarmakṛt

SYNONYMS

saḥ: he | aloḍayat: ransacked | giridrgrāṇi: mountain passes | gṛhya: by taking phaala pitakam = a basket and a shovel | anucaran: (and) roaming | sarvāḥ: in all | diśaḥ: directions | pāpakarmakṛtyathā: as having done sinful deeds. |

TRANSLATION

Roaming in all directions as though he has done sinful deeds, he ransacked mountain passes, by taking a basket and a shovel.

VERSE 26

इति एवम् अत्यजद् राजा सगरः वै सुधार्मिकः
रामः किम् अकरोत् पापम् येन एवम् उपरुध्यते

iti evam atyajad rājā sagaraḥ vai sudhārmikaḥ
rāmaḥ kim akarot pāpam yena evam uparudhyate

SYNONYMS

agaraḥ rājā: king Sagara | sudhārmikaḥ: the highly righteous man | atyajat: abandoned | enam: him | iti: in this manner | kim pāpam: what sin | rāmaḥ: Rama | akarot: has done | yena: for which | uparudhyate: he was debarred | evam: in this way? |

TRANSLATION

"The highly righteous King Sagara abandoned Asamanja for perpetration sinful deeds as above. But, what sin Rama has done, for which he was debarred in this way?"

VERSE 27

न हि कंचन पश्यामो राघवस्यागुणम् वयम्
दुर्लभो यस्य निरयः श्शाङ्कस्येव कल्मषम्

na hi kaṃcana paśyāmo rāghavasyāguṇam vayam
durlabho yasya nirayaḥ śśāṅkasyeva kalmaṣam

SYNONYMS

vayam: we | napaśyāmaḥ hi: do not indeed perceive | kamāhana: any | avaguṇam: fault | rāghavasya: of Rama | durlabhaḥ: (It is as) difficult | nirayaḥ: (to find) taint | asya: in him | śaśāṇkasya: as of a (new) moon. |

TRANSLATION

We do not indeed perceive any fault in Rama. It is as difficult to find a taint in him as in a new moon.

VERSE 28

अथवा देवि दोषम् त्वं कंचित्पश्यसि राघवे
तमद्य ब्रूहि तत्वैन तदा रोमो विवास्यताम्

athavā devi doṣam tvaṃ kaṃcitpaśyasi rāghave
tamadya brūhi tatvaina tadā romo vivāsyatām

SYNONYMS

athavā: Or | paśyasi: if you see | kamcit doṣam: any fault | rāghave: in Rama | devi: Oh | tvam: you | brūhi: tell | tam: about it | adya: now | tattvena: correctly | tadā: then | rāmaḥ: rama | vivāsyatām: will be exiled. |

TRANSLATION

"Or if you see any fault in Rama, Oh Kaikeyi you tell about it now correctly. Then, Rama will be exiled."

VERSE 29

अदुष्टस्य हि सम्त्यागः सत्पथे निरतस्य च
निर्दहे दपि शक्रस्य द्युतिम् धर्मनिरोधनात्

aduṣṭasya hi samtyāgaḥ satpathe niratasya ca
nirdahe dapi śakrasya dyutim dharmanirodhanāt

SYNONYMS

dharmanirodhanāt: It is hindering righteousness | samtyāgaḥ: to abandon | aduṣṭasya: one who is not guilty | niratasyaca: and who is devoted to in | satpathe: a god path | nirdahet: It would consume | dyutim: the splendour | śakrasya api: of even Indra (the ruler of gods). |

TRANSLATION

As it is contradictory to righteousness to abandon one who is guilty and who is devoted to a good path, it would consume the splendour of even Indra (the ruler of gods)

VERSE 30

तदलम् देवि रामस्य श्रिया विहतया त्वया
लोकतो।अप् हि ते रक्ष्यः परिवादः शुभानने

tadalam devi rāmasya śriyā vihatayā tvayā
lokato|ap hi te rakṣyaḥ parivādaḥ śubhānane

SYNONYMS

devi: Oh Kaikeyi! tat = hence | alam: no need of | vihatayā: impeding | śriyā: the royal fortune | rāmasya: of Rama | śubhānane: Oh lady with charming face! parivaadaH api = even the public | rakṣyah hi: should be taken care of | te: by you. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, Kaikeyi! Hence, there is no need of impeding the royal fortune of Rama. Oh, lady with a charming face! Even blame from the public should be taken care of by you."

VERSE 31

श्रुत्वा तु सिद्ध अर्थ वचो राजा श्रान्ततर स्वनः
शोक उपहतया वाचा कैकेयीम् इदम् अब्रवीत्

śrutvā tu siddha artha vaco rājā śrāntatara svanaḥ
śoka upahatayā vācā kaikeyīm idam abravīt

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | siddhārthavacaḥ: the words of Siddhartha | rāja: king Dasaratha | abravīt: spoke | kaikeyīm: to Kaikeyi | śrāntatara svanaḥ: in the most tiresome tone | vācā: in a voice | śokapahatā: choked with deep angnish. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Siddhartha, king Dasaratha spoke to Kaikeyi in the most tiresome tone, with a voice choked with deep anguish, as follows.

VERSE 32

एतद्वचो नेच्छ्सि पापवृत्ते
हितम् न जानासि ममात्मनो वा
आस्थाय मार्गम् कृपणम् कुचेष्टा
चेष्टा हि ते साधुपदादपेता

etadvaco necchsi pāpavṛtte
hitam na jānāsi mamātmano vā
āsthāya mārgam kṛpaṇam kuceṣṭā
ceṣṭā hi te sādhupadādapetā

SYNONYMS

pāpavṛtte: Oh | the sinful being! necchasi: do you not agree | etat: with these | vacaḥ: words? kucheshhTaa = you | āsthāya: by resortin gto | mārgam: the path | kṛpaṇam: of the deplorable | na jānāsi: are you not alive | hitam: to the interest | mama: of myself | ātmanovā: or of your own | te: you | ceṣṭā: action | apetā: is deprived of | sādhupathāt: the path of righteousness. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, the sinful being! Do you not agree with these words of Siddhartha? By resorting to the path of the deplorable, you with a bad behaviour, are not alive to my interests or to your own. Your action is deprived of a righteous path."

VERSE 33

इति वाल्मीकि रामायणे आदि काव्ये अयोध्य काण्डे षत् त्रिंशः सर्गः

iti vālmīki rāmāyaṇe ādi kāvye ayodhya kāṇḍe ṣat triṃśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

aham: I | anuvrajiṣyāmi: am accompanying | rāmam: Rama | adya: now | parityajya: by abandoning | rājyam: the kingdom | sukham: happiness | dhanamca: and wealth | tvam: you | bhuṇkṣva: enjoy | cirāya: for a long time | yathāsukham: happily | bharatena sahaiva: together with Bharatha | rāñā: the king. |

TRANSLATION

"I am accompanying Rama now, by abandoning my kingdom, happiness and wealth. You enjoy the kingdom for a long time, happily together with Bharata the King." Thus completes 36th chapter in the Ayodhya Kanda of the glorious Ramayana of Valmiki, the work of a sage and the oldest epic.
