VERSE 1

स तत् अन्तः पुर द्वारम् समतीत्य जन आकुलम्
प्रविविक्ताम् ततः कक्ष्याम् आससाद पुराणवित्

sa tat antaḥ pura dvāram samatītya jana ākulam
praviviktām tataḥ kakṣyām āsasāda purāṇavit

2| saḥ: that sumantra | purāṇavit: who knew the ancient sacred works | samatītya: passed over | tad: that | janākulam: crowded | antaḥpura dvāram: palace entrance | tataḥ: then | āsasāda: reached secluded | kakṣyām: inner apartment | adhiṣṭhitām: guarded by | yūabhiḥ: youth | prāsakārmukabibhradbhiḥ: wearing bows and darts | mṛsṭakundalaiḥ: heaving polished ear-rings | apramādibhiḥ: who were vigilant | ekāgraiḥ: attentive | svanuraktaiḥ: and devoted to the king. |

TRANSLATION

That Sumantra, who knew the ancient sacred works, passed over the crowded entrance of the palace and reached the secluded inner apartment. In that area of the inner apartment, some youths , wearing darts and bows, were on security-duty with due vigilance and attention. They were all greatly devoted to the king and were wearing polished ear-rings.

VERSE 3

तत्र काषायिणो वृद्धान् वेत्र पाणीन् स्वलम्कृतान्
ददर्श विष्ठितान् द्वारि स्त्र्य् अध्यक्षान् सुसमाहितान्

tatra kāṣāyiṇo vṛddhān vetra pāṇīn svalamkṛtān
dadarśa viṣṭhitān dvāri stry adhyakṣān susamāhitān

SYNONYMS

tatra: there | dadarśa: (he)saw | vṛddhān: aged | stryadhyakṣān: palace supervisors | kāṣayiṇaḥ: with orange coloured clothes | svalankṛtān: well-adorned themselves | vetrapāṇīn: having vanes in their hands | susamāhitān: well composed | viṣṭitān: being posted | dvāri: in door-ways. |

TRANSLATION

There he saw aged palace-supervisors wearing orange coloured clothes, adorning themselves well, having canes in their hands, well composed and being posted at door-ways.

VERSE 4

ते समीक्ष्य समायान्तम् राम प्रिय चिकीर्षवः
सह भार्याय रामाय क्षिप्रम् एव आचचक्षिरे

te samīkṣya samāyāntam rāma priya cikīrṣavaḥ
saha bhāryāya rāmāya kṣipram eva ācacakṣire

SYNONYMS

te sarve: all of them | rāmapriyacikīrṣavaḥ: the well-wishers of Rama | samīkṣya: saw | samāyāntam: him coming | utpatitāḥ: raised | āsanabhyaḥ: from their seats | sahasā: all at once | sasambhramāḥ: hurriedly. |

TRANSLATION

All of them, the well-wishers of Rama, saw that Sumantra arriving and raised from their seats hurriedly at once.

VERSE 5

प्रतिवेदितम् आज्ञाय सूतम् अभ्यन्तरम् पितुः
तत्र एव आनाययाम् आस राघवः प्रिय काम्यया

prativeditam ājñāya sūtam abhyantaram pituḥ
tatra eva ānāyayām āsa rāghavaḥ priya kāmyayā

SYNONYMS

vimītātmā: humble minded | sūtaputraḥ: Sumantra | uvāca: spoke | tān: to them | ākhyāta: "Make known | rāmāya: to Rama | kṣipram: immediately | sumantraḥ: Sumantra | tiṣṭati: is standing | pradikṣaṇaḥ: with revernece | dvāri: at the entrance. |

TRANSLATION

That humble-minded Sumantra spoke to them thus, "Tell Rama immediately that Sumantra is waiting with reverence at the entrance"

VERSE 6

ते राममुपसम्गम्य भर्तुः प्रियचिकीर्षवः
सहभार्याय रामाय क्षिप्रमेवाचचक्षिरे

te rāmamupasamgamya bhartuḥ priyacikīrṣavaḥ
sahabhāryāya rāmāya kṣipramevācacakṣire

SYNONYMS

te: they | priyacikīrṣavaḥ: the well wishers | bhartuḥ: of master upasangamya = approached | rāmam: Rama | kṣiprameva: quickly | acacakṣire: informed | ramāya: to Rama | sahabhāryāya: who was with his wife. |

TRANSLATION

They, the well-wishers of their master, approached Rama who was with his wife and immediately informed him.

VERSE 7

प्रतिवेदितमाज्ञाय सूतमभ्यम्तरम् पितुः
तत्रैवानाययामास राघवः पियकाम्यया

prativeditamājñāya sūtamabhyamtaram pituḥ
tatraivānāyayāmāsa rāghavaḥ piyakāmyayā

SYNONYMS

aṅyāya: knowing | sūtam: Sumantra | abhyantaram: who was intimate | pituḥ: to father | prativeditam: being informed by them | rāgahava: Rama | priyakāmyayā: who desired to show kindness | anāyayamāsa: called him in | tatraiva: there only. |

TRANSLATION

Knowing that Sumantra, who was intimate to his father, came, Rama who desired to show kindness, called him in there.

VERSE 8

तम् वैश्रवण सम्काशम् उपविष्टम् स्वलम्कृतम्
दादर्श सूतः पर्यन्के सौवणो स उत्तरच् चदे

tam vaiśravaṇa samkāśam upaviṣṭam svalamkṛtam
dādarśa sūtaḥ paryanke sauvaṇo sa uttarac cade

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

That Sumantra saw Rama sitting like Kubera on a golden couch with the best cloth-covering. He adorned himself well and had the body anointed with sandal perfume, purely smelling like blood of a boar. With Sita, standing on his side with chowrie in her hand, Rama was shining like moon with chitra star.

VERSE 11

तम् तपन्तम् इव आदित्यम् उपपन्नम् स्व तेजसा
ववन्दे वरदम् बन्दी नियमज्ञो विनीतवत्

tam tapantam iva ādityam upapannam sva tejasā
vavande varadam bandī niyamajño vinītavat

SYNONYMS

vandi: Sumantra | vinayajñḥ: who knew pokite conduct | vavande: respectfully saluted | tam: that Rama | vimītavat: who was refined | upapannam: endowed with | svateja sa: hi own brilliance | tapantam: shining | ādityam iva: like sun | varadam: granting wishes. |

TRANSLATION

Sumantra, who knew polite conduct, offered salutation to Rama, who was refined with his own brilliance, shining like the sun and the fulfiller of desires.

VERSE 12

प्रान्जलिस् तु सुखम् पृष्ट्वा विहार शयन आसने
राज पुत्रम् उवाच इदम् सुमन्त्रः राज सत्कृतः

prānjalis tu sukham pṛṣṭvā vihāra śayana āsane
rāja putram uvāca idam sumantraḥ rāja satkṛtaḥ

SYNONYMS

sumantraḥ: Sumantra | rājasatkṛtaḥ: who was treated with respect by Rama | vuāca: spoke | idam: these words | praṅjaliḥ: with folded hands | rājaputram: to that prince | sumukham: with beautiful face | vihāraśayanāsane: and who was seated on a swinging sofa. |

TRANSLATION

Sumantra, who was treated with respect by Rama spoke thus with folded hands to that prince with beautiful face and who was seated on a swinging sofa.

VERSE 13

कौसल्या सुप्रभा देव पिता त्वम् द्रष्टुम् इच्चति
महिष्या सह कैकेय्या गम्यताम् तत्र माचिरम्

kausalyā suprabhā deva pitā tvam draṣṭum iccati
mahiṣyā saha kaikeyyā gamyatām tatra māciram

SYNONYMS

rāmaḥ: Rama | kausalyā suprajā: the good offspring of Kausalya! pitaa = your father | mahiṣyā kaikeyyāsaha: along with Queen Kaikeyi | icchati: wish | drasṭum: to see | tvām: you | gamyatām: let you go | tatra: there | māciram: wtihout delay. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh Rama, the good offspring of Kausalya! Your father and the Queen Kaikeyi want to see you. Go there soon."

VERSE 14

एवम् उक्तः तु सम्हृष्टः नर सिम्हो महा द्युतिः
ततः सम्मानयाम् आस सीताम् इदम् उवाच ह

evam uktaḥ tu samhṛṣṭaḥ nara simho mahā dyutiḥ
tataḥ sammānayām āsa sītām idam uvāca ha

SYNONYMS

narasimhaḥ: that best of men | mahādyutiḥ: with great brilliance | samhṛsṭaḥ: was pleased | uktaḥ: to be told | evam: thus | tataḥ: them | sammanayāmāsa: honoured him | uvāca ha: spoke | idam: these words | sītām: to Sita. |

TRANSLATION

That best of men with great brilliance was pleased to hear those words, then honoured him and spoke thus to Sita.

VERSE 15

देवि देवः च देवी च समागम्य मद् अन्तरे
मन्त्रेयेते ध्रुवम् किंचित् अभिषेचन सम्हितम्

devi devaḥ ca devī ca samāgamya mad antare
mantreyete dhruvam kiṃcit abhiṣecana samhitam

SYNONYMS

devi: Oh | ṣita! devaśca: the king | devīca: and the queen | samāgamya: together | mantrayate: are thinking | kincit: of something | madantare: about me | abhiṣacana samhitam: relating to coronation | dhṛvam: certain. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh Sita! The king and the queen together are thinking of something about me, relating to coronation. It is certain."

VERSE 16

लक्षयित्वा हि अभिप्रायम् प्रिय कामा सुदक्षिणा
संचोदयति राजानम् मद् अर्थम् मदिर ईक्षणा

lakṣayitvā hi abhiprāyam priya kāmā sudakṣiṇā
saṃcodayati rājānam mad artham madira īkṣaṇā

SYNONYMS

asitekṣaṇā: the black-eyed Kaikeyi | sudakṣiṇā: who is dexterous | priyakāmā: friendly disposed | lakṣayitva: perceived | abhiprāyam: the opinion | sancodayati: inciting | rājānam: the king | madartham: for my sake. |

TRANSLATION

"Then black-eyed Kaikeyi who is dexterous and friendly disposed, has perceived the king's opinion and is inciting him for my sake"

VERSE 17

सा प्रहृष्टा महाराजम् हितकामानुवर्तिनी
जननी चार्थकामा मे केकयाधिपतेस्सुता

sā prahṛṣṭā mahārājam hitakāmānuvartinī
jananī cārthakāmā me kekayādhipatessutā

SYNONYMS

kekayādhipateḥ sutā: "Kaikeyi | jananīca: and my mother | : she | anuvartinī: is following | mahārajam: the king | prahṛṣṭā: is delighted | hitakāma: desirous of my benefit | me arthakāmā: wishing my prosperity". |

TRANSLATION

"Kaikeyi, my mother is following the king's intentions with great pleasure, desirous of my benefit and prosperity"

VERSE 18

दिष्ट्या खलु महाराजो महिष्या प्रियया सह
सुमम्त्रम् प्राहिणोद्दूत मर्थकामकरम् मम

diṣṭyā khalu mahārājo mahiṣyā priyayā saha
sumamtram prāhiṇoddūta marthakāmakaram mama

SYNONYMS

mahārajaḥ: the king | priyayā saha: along with wife | mahiṣyā: the queen | khalu: certainly | diṣtyā: by luch | prāhiṇot: sent | sumantram: Sumantra | mama arthakāmakaram: who fulfils my desires and wishes | dūtam: as messenger. |

TRANSLATION

"It is certainly our luck that king and queen have sent Sumantra, who fulfils my desires and wishes, as messenger".

VERSE 19

यादृशी परिषत् तत्र तादृशो दूताअगतः
ध्रुवम् अद्य एव माम् राजा यौवराज्ये अभिषेक्ष्यति

yādṛśī pariṣat tatra tādṛśo dūtāagataḥ
dhruvam adya eva mām rājā yauvarājye abhiṣekṣyati

SYNONYMS

yādṛśī: of which sort of tatra parishhat that sort of | dūtaḥ: messenger | āgataḥ: came | dhṛvam: certainly | adyaiva: today itself | rājā: the king | abhiṣekṣyati: will anoint | mām: me | youvarājye: for the right of succession to kingdom. |

TRANSLATION

"A worthy messenger has come who is truly representing the assembly there. It is certain that today itself the king will anoint me for the right of succession to kingdom".

VERSE 20

हन्त शीघ्रम् इतः गत्वा द्रक्ष्यामि च मही पतिः
सह त्वम् परिवारेण सुखम् आस्स्व रमस्य च

hanta śīghram itaḥ gatvā drakṣyāmi ca mahī patiḥ
saha tvam parivāreṇa sukham āssva ramasya ca

SYNONYMS

hanta: Alas! gatvaa = (I shall) go | śīghram: immediately | itaḥ: from here | drakṣyāmi ca: and see | mahipatim: the king | tvam: you | āsva: stay | sukham: happily | parivāreṇa saha: with the circle of friends | ramasva ca: and enjoy yourself. |

TRANSLATION

"I shall go immediately and see the king. You stay happily with the circle of friends and enjoy yourself."

VERSE 21

पति सम्मानिता सीता भर्तारम् असित ईक्षणा
आद्वारम् अनुवव्राज मन्गलानि अभिदध्युषी

pati sammānitā sītā bhartāram asita īkṣaṇā
ādvāram anuvavrāja mangalāni abhidadhyuṣī

SYNONYMS

sītā: Sita | patisammānitā: treated with respect by husband | asitekṣaṇā: having black eyes | anuvavrāja: followed | bhartāram: husband | ā dvāram: upto door | abhidadhyuṣī: thinking | mangalāni: of auspicious things. |

TRANSLATION

Sita, treated with respect by her husband and having black eyes, followed her husband up to the door, thinking of auspicious things in her mind.

VERSE 22

राज्यम् द्विजातिभिर्जुष्टम् राजसूयाभिषेचनम्
कर्तुमर्हति ते राजा वासवस्येव लोककृत्

rājyam dvijātibhirjuṣṭam rājasūyābhiṣecanam
kartumarhati te rājā vāsavasyeva lokakṛt

SYNONYMS

rājā: king Dasaratha | te: to you | rājyam: kingdom | juṣṭam: being served | dvijātibhiḥ: by brahmanas | vasavasyeva: like to Devendra | lokakṛt: by Brahma | arhati: to perform | rājasūyābhiṣehanam: great sacrifice at coronation of king. |

TRANSLATION

"King Dasaratha will give you kingdom, being served by brahmanas, which will invest you with eligibility to perform the great sacrifice at the coronation ceremony like Brahma to Devendra."

VERSE 23

दीक्षितम् व्रतसम्पन्नम् वराजिनधरम् शुचिम्
कुरङ्गपाणिम् च पश्यन्ती त्वाम् भजाम्यहम्

dīkṣitam vratasampannam varājinadharam śucim
kuraṅgapāṇim ca paśyantī tvām bhajāmyaham

SYNONYMS

aham: I | bhajāmi: shall enjoy | paśyantī: seeing | tvām: you | dīkṣtam: initiated | vratasampannam: for perfect religious act of austerity | varājinadharam: wearing excellent antelope-hide | śucim: being pure | kuraṅga śṛṅgapāṇimca: and bearing a deer-horn in hand. |

TRANSLATION

"I shall be delighted to see you, initiated for the perfect religious act of austerity, wearing excellent antelope-hide, being pure and bearing a deer-horn in hand".

VERSE 24

पूर्वाम् दिशम् वज्रधरो दक्षिणाम् पातु ते यमः
वरुणः पश्चिमामाशाम् धनेशस्तूत्तराम् दिशम्

pūrvām diśam vajradharo dakṣiṇām pātu te yamaḥ
varuṇaḥ paścimāmāśām dhaneśastūttarām diśam

SYNONYMS

te: your | pūrvam diśam: eastern direction | vajradharaḥ: Indra the god of rain | dakṣiṇām: south | yamaḥ: yama the god of death | paścimāmaśām: western direction | varunaḥ: varuna the regent of ocean | uttarām diśam tu: northern direction | dhaneśaḥ: Kubera | pātu: protect. |

TRANSLATION

"May Indra the god of rain in the east, Yama the god of death in the south, Varuna the regent of the ocean in the west and Kubera the god of riches and treasure in the north, protect you".

VERSE 25

अथ सीतामनुज्ञाप्य कृतकौतुकमगल्दः
निश्चक्राम सुमन्त्रेण सह रामो निवेशनात्

atha sītāmanujñāpya kṛtakautukamagaldaḥ
niścakrāma sumantreṇa saha rāmo niveśanāt

SYNONYMS

atha: then | rāmaḥ: Rama | kṛtakantuka mangalaḥ: adorned as in an auspicious ceremony | anujñāpya: got permission | sītām: from Sita | niścakrāma: started | niveśanāt: from house | sumantreṇa saha: along with Sumantra. |

TRANSLATION

Rama, adorned as in an auspicious festivity, took permission from Sita and started from house along with Sumantra.

VERSE 26

पर्वतादिव निष्क्रम्य सिम्हो गिरिगुहाशयः
लक्ष्मणम् द्वारिसो।अपश्यत् प्रह्वञ्जलिपुटम् स्थितम्

parvatādiva niṣkramya simho giriguhāśayaḥ
lakṣmaṇam dvāriso|apaśyat prahvañjalipuṭam sthitam

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that Rama | miṣkramya: came out of the house | parvatāt iva: like from the mountain | simhah: lion | firigulāśayaḥ: residing in mountain cave | apaśyat: saw | lakṣmaṇam: Lakshmana | sthitam: staying | dvāri: at the door | prahvāñjalipuṭam: bowing with the palms of hand joined and put to forehead as a mark of respect. |

TRANSLATION

That Rama who came out, like a lion residing in a mountain cave from out of the mountain, saw Lakshmana standing at the door, bowing with palms of the hand joined and put to the forehead as a mark of respect.

VERSE 27

अथ मध्यमकक्ष्यायाम् समागच्छत् सुहृज्जनैः
स सर्वान् अर्थिनो दृष्ट्वा समेत्य प्रतिनन्द्य च

atha madhyamakakṣyāyām samāgacchat suhṛjjanaiḥ
sa sarvān arthino dṛṣṭvā sametya pratinandya ca

SYNONYMS

28| atha: then | rājananadanaḥ: prince | puruṣavyāghraḥ: the best of men | samāgacchat: met | suhṛjjanaiḥ: the friends madhya kakashhyaayaam = in the middle chamber | dṛṣṭvā: saw | sarvān: all | arthinaḥ: people desiring to behold him | sametya: approached nearer | pratinandyaca: and greated | āruroha: mounted | rathothamam: excellent chariot | rājitam: shining | pāvaka sankāśam: like fire | vyyāghram: covered by tiger's skin |

TRANSLATION

Then, that prince the best of men, met his friends in the middle chamber. He saw all the people who came there to behold him, approached nearer to them, greeted them and mounted the excellent chariot, which was resplendent like fire and covered with tiger's skin.

VERSE 29

मेघनादमसम्बाधम् मणिहेमविभूशितम्
मुष्णन्तम् इव चक्षूम्षि प्रभया हेम वर्चसम्

meghanādamasambādham maṇihemavibhūśitam
muṣṇantam iva cakṣūmṣi prabhayā hema varcasam

SYNONYMS

30| ratham: the chariot | meghanāda: sounding like thunder | asambādham: not congested | maṇihemavibhūṣitam: decorated with gold and jewels | muṣṇantamiva: as it was stealing | cakṣūmṣi: the eyes | prabhayā: by splendour | marevarcasam: like brilliance of Meru mountain | paramavājabhiḥ: excellent horses | kareṇu śiśukalpaiḥ: excellet horses looking like infantine elephants | yuktam: were fastened | āśugam: moving quickly | rāghavaḥ: Rama | jvalitaḥ: shining | śriyā: with prosperity | āsthāya: mounted | hariyuktam iva: what like chariot with horses | indraḥ: of Indra | sahasrākṣaḥ: having thousand eyes | prayayau: went forth | tūrṇam: quickly. |

TRANSLATION

That chariot was sounding like thunder. It was not congested. It was decorated with gold and jewels. Its splendour was like that of Meru mountain, stealing the eyes. Excellent horses looking like infantine elephants were tied to the chariot, which was moving quickly. That Rama shining with splendour like Indra, the lord of sky, mounted such a chariot and went forth quickly.

VERSE 31

स पर्जन्यैव आकाशे स्वनवान् अभिनादयन्

sa parjanyaiva ākāśe svanavān abhinādayan

SYNONYMS

śrīmān saḥ: that splendid chariot | svanavān: having sound | parjanya iva: like rain cloud | ākāśe: in the sky | abhinādayan: making sound | niryayau: started | niketāt: from the house | candramā iva: like moon | mahābhrāt: from mighty cloud. |

TRANSLATION

That splendid chariot, sounding like rain-cloud in the sky, came out of the house like moon coming out of a mighty cloud.

VERSE 32

चत्र चामर पाणिस् तु लक्ष्मणो राघव अनुजः

catra cāmara pāṇis tu lakṣmaṇo rāghava anujaḥ

SYNONYMS

lakṣmaṇaḥ: Lakshmana | rāghavānujaḥ: Rama's younger | bhrātā: brother | āsthāya: mounted | ratham: the chariot | pṛṣṭataḥ: in the back-side | jugopa: protected | bhrātaram: brother | chatra cāmara pāṇiḥ: having umbrella and chamara fan in hand. |

TRANSLATION

Lakshmana, Rama's younger brother mounted the chariot in the back-side and protected Rama with umbrella and chamara fan.

VERSE 33

ततः हल हला शब्दः तुमुलः समजायत

tataḥ hala halā śabdaḥ tumulaḥ samajāyata

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | tasya: those | janaughasya: crowds | niṣkramamāṇasya: dispersing | samantataḥ: from all sides | samajāyata: generated | tumulaḥ: tumultuous | halahalāśabdaḥ: hallooing sound. |

TRANSLATION

Then, the crowds started dispersing from all sides generating tumultuous hallowing sound.

VERSE 34

ततो हयवरा मुख्या नागाश्च गिरिसन्निभाः

tato hayavarā mukhyā nāgāśca girisannibhāḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereupon | śataśaḥ: hundreds | sahasraśaḥ: and thousands of | mukhyāḥ: importatn | hayavarāḥ: excellent horses | nagāśca: and elephants | girisannibhāḥ: looking like mountains | tadā: then | anujagmuḥ: followed | rāmam: Rama. |

TRANSLATION

Thereupon, hundreds and thousands of important people mounted on excellent horses and soldiers mounted on elephants, then followed Rama.

VERSE 35

अग्रतश्चास्य सन्नद्धाश्चन्दनागुरुभूषिताः

agrataścāsya sannaddhāścandanāgurubhūṣitāḥ

SYNONYMS

śurāḥ janāḥ: valiant persons | sannaddhāḥ: dressed in armour | candanāguru bhuṣitāḥ: adorned with sandal and aloe perfumes | khadgacāpadharāḥ: wearing swords and bows | āśamsavaḥ: declaring arrival of Rama | jagmuḥ: went | agrataḥ: in front | asya: of Rama. |

TRANSLATION

Valiant persons, dressed in armour adorned with sandal and aloe perfumes, wearing swords and bows, declaring the arrival of Rama, went in front of Rama to receive him.

VERSE 36

ततो वादित्रशब्दाश्च स्तुतिशब्दाश्च वन्दिनाम्

tato vāditraśabdāśca stutiśabdāśca vandinām

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | tadā: then | vāditra śabdāśca: sounds of musical instruments | stutiśabdāśca: sounds of praising hymns | vandinām: of panegyrists | simha nādāśca: and lion like roars | śūrāṇā: of valiant perosons | śuśruvare: were heard | pathi: on the way. |

TRANSLATION

At that time, sounds of musical instruments, sounds of praising hymns of panagyrists and lion-like roars of valiant persons were heard on the way.

VERSE 37

हर्म्यवातायनस्थाभिर्भूषिताभिः समन्ततः

harmyavātāyanasthābhirbhūṣitābhiḥ samantataḥ

SYNONYMS

ārindamaḥ: Rama | yayau: went | kīryamaṇaḥ: being sprinkled | supuṣponghaiḥ: by stream of good flowers | samantataḥ: all around | bhūṣitābhiḥ strībhiḥ: by well adorned women | harmya vatāyanasthābhiḥ: standing in porticoes of palaces. |

TRANSLATION

While Rama, the annihilator of enemies, was going, well-adorned women standing in porticoes of palaces, sprinkled flowers on him from all sides.

VERSE 38

रामम् सर्वानवद्याण्ग्यो रामपिप्रीषया ततः

rāmam sarvānavadyāṇgyo rāmapiprīṣayā tataḥ

SYNONYMS

sarvānavadyāṅgyā: women of equisitely beautiful form | harmyasthāh: standing in palaces | kṣitisthāśca: and on ground vavandhire = were offering salutations | rāmam: to Rama | agryaiḥ vacobhiḥ: with the best words | rāmapiprīṣayā: with desire to please Rama. |

TRANSLATION

Women of exquisitely beautiful form standing in palaces and on ground were offering salutations to Rama with the best words with a desire to please Rama.

VERSE 39

नूनम् नन्धिति ते माता कौसल्या मातृनन्दन

nūnam nandhiti te mātā kausalyā mātṛnandana

SYNONYMS

mātṛnandana: the one creates happiness to mother! siddhayaatram = have successful journey | te: your | mātā: mother | kausalyā: kausalya | nandati: is elighting | nūnam: certainly | paśyantī: to see | tvām: you | upasthitam: having obtained | pitryam rājyam: paternal kingdom. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, Rama, who creates happiness to mother! Have successful journey! Your mother Kausalya will be certainly delighted to see you obtaining the paternal kingdom."

VERSE 40

सर्वसीमन्तिनीभ्यश्च सीताम् सीमन्तिनीम् वराम्

sarvasīmantinībhyaśca sītām sīmantinīm varām

SYNONYMS

tāḥ: those | nāryaḥ: women | amanyantahi: thought | sītām: Sita | rāmasya hṛdayapriyām: who is dear to Rama's heart | varām: is better | sīmantīm: woman | sarvasīmantībhyaḥ: than all women. |

TRANSLATION

Those women thought that Sita, who is dear to Rama's heart, is better woman than all women.

VERSE 41

तया सुचरितम् देव्या पुरा नूनम् महत्तपः

tayā sucaritam devyā purā nūnam mahattapaḥ

SYNONYMS

: which Sita | rahiṇī iva: like Rohini star | śaśāṇkena: with moon | āpa: has obtained | rāmasmyogam: union with Rama | tayā devyā: by such Sita | mahat: great | tapaḥ: penance | mūnam: indeed | sucaritam: was performed well | purā: in former times. |

TRANSLATION

"As Rohini star stays together with the moon, Sita having obtained Rama as husband must have certainly performed a great penance in former times."

VERSE 42

इति प्रासादशृङ्गेषु प्रमदाभिर्नरोत्तमः

iti prāsādaśṛṅgeṣu pramadābhirnarottamaḥ

SYNONYMS

narottamaḥ: Rama | rājamārgasthaḥ: who was in the royal road | suśrāva: heard | priyāḥ vācaḥ: pleasent words | udāhṛtāḥ: spoken | iti: thus | pramadābhiḥ: by women | prāsādasṛngeṣu: who were in turrets. |

TRANSLATION

While going through the royal road, Rama heard those pleasant words spoken thus by women standing in turrets.

VERSE 43

स राघवः तत्र कथा प्रलापम्
शुश्राव लोकस्य समागतस्य
आत्म अधिकारा विविधाः च वाचः
प्रहृष्ट रूपस्य पुरे जनस्य

sa rāghavaḥ tatra kathā pralāpam
śuśrāva lokasya samāgatasya
ātma adhikārā vividhāḥ ca vācaḥ
prahṛṣṭa rūpasya pure janasya

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | saḥ: that | rāghavaḥ: Rama | suśrāva: heard | pralapān: words | lokasya: of people | tatra: there | vācaḥ ca: and also words | vividhāḥ: variously | ātmādhikārāḥ: pertaining to himself | pure janasya: by citizens | prahṛṣṭarūpasya: who were much delighted. |

TRANSLATION

Then, Rama heard the words of people gathered there and also the words variously pertaining to himself, by citizens.

VERSE 44

एष श्रियम् गच्चति राघवो अद्य
राज प्रसादात् विपुलाम् गमिष्यन्
एते वयम् सर्व समृद्ध कामा
येषाम् अयम् नो भविता प्रशास्ता

eṣa śriyam gaccati rāghavo adya
rāja prasādāt vipulām gamiṣyan
ete vayam sarva samṛddha kāmā
yeṣām ayam no bhavitā praśāstā

SYNONYMS

rāja prasādāt: by king's propitiousness | eṣaḥ: this | rāghavaḥ: Rama | gamiṣyan: who will obtain | vipulām: the earth | adya: now | gacchati: will gain | śriyam: wealth | yeṣām naḥ: for which of us | ayam: he | bahvitā: will become | praśastā: ruler | ete vayam: such of us | sarvasamṛdhdhakāmā: will have fulfilled all desires. |

TRANSLATION

"By the king's propitiousness, this Rama today is going to obtain this earth and the wealthy kingdom. All our desires are going to be fulfilled because Rama will become the ruler."

VERSE 45

लाभो जनस्य अस्य यद् एष सर्वम्
प्रपत्स्यते राष्ट्रम् इदम् चिराय
स घोषवद्भिः च हयैः सनागैः
पुरह्सरैः स्वस्तिक सूत मागधैः

lābho janasya asya yad eṣa sarvam
prapatsyate rāṣṭram idam cirāya
sa ghoṣavadbhiḥ ca hayaiḥ sanāgaiḥ
purahsaraiḥ svastika sūta māgadhaiḥ

SYNONYMS

yat: since when | eṣaḥ: this Rama | pravatsyate: will get | sarvam idam rāṣṭram: this entire state | cirāya: for a long time(since then) | lābhaḥ: benefit | asya janasya: for these people | asmin mamjādhipe: when this Rama becomes king | kaścit: anyone | jātu: at anytime | na paśyet hi: will not see kichana = anything | apriyam: unkindly | na: nor | duḥkham: grief. |

TRANSLATION

"If Rama rules this state for a long time, it will be a great benefit to the people. If he becomes a king none can see dislike and sorrow at any time."

VERSE 46

स घोषवद्भिश्च हयैः सनागैः
पुरस्सरैः स्वस्तिकसूतमागधैः
महीयमानः प्रवरैः च वादकैः
अभिष्टुतः वैश्रवणो यथा ययौ

sa ghoṣavadbhiśca hayaiḥ sanāgaiḥ
purassaraiḥ svastikasūtamāgadhaiḥ
mahīyamānaḥ pravaraiḥ ca vādakaiḥ
abhiṣṭutaḥ vaiśravaṇo yathā yayau

SYNONYMS

sūtamāgadhaiḥ: bards and panegyrists | svastika: invoking blessings | purassaraiḥ: moving in front | mahīyamānaḥ: praising with great respect | abhiṣṭutaḥ: eulogised | pravaraiḥ vādyakaiḥ: by the most excellent instrumentalists | saḥ: that Rama | vaiśrāvaṇotatha: like Kubera the god of weatlh | yayau: went | hayaiḥ: with horses | sanāgaiḥ: together with elephants | ghoṣavadbhiḥ: having resounds. |

TRANSLATION

While bards and panegyrists were moving in front praising with great respect, invoking blessings and eulogised by the most excellent instrumentalists, Rama, like Kubera the god of wealth, went with resounding horses and elephants.
