Ayodhya Kanda - Book Of Ayodhya

VERSE 1

निवेश्य सेनाम् तु विभुः पद्भ्याम् पादवताम् वरः
अभिगन्तुम् स काकुत्स्थम् इयेष गुरु वर्तकम्

niveśya senām tu vibhuḥ padbhyām pādavatām varaḥ
abhigantum sa kākutstham iyeṣa guru vartakam

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that Bharata | vibhuḥ: the mighty | varaḥ: and the excellent | pādavatām: among men (those having feet) | niveśya: (after) encamping | senām: the army | iyeṣa: sought | abhigantum: to approach | kākutthsam: Rama | guruvartakam: who was abiding his | padbhyām: by foot. |

TRANSLATION

After encamping the army, the mighty Bharata the excellent among men, sought to approach on foot, Rama who was complying with the words of his father.

VERSE 2

निविष्ट मात्रे सैन्ये तु यथा उद्देशम् विनीतवत्
भरतो भ्रातरम् वाक्यम् शत्रुघ्नम् इदम् अब्रवीत्

niviṣṭa mātre sainye tu yathā uddeśam vinītavat
bharato bhrātaram vākyam śatrughnam idam abravīt

SYNONYMS

niviṣṭa mātre: Soon after encamping | sainye: the army | vinītavat: in a well-behaved manner | yathoddeśam: according to the guidelines | bharataḥ: Bharata | abravīt: spoke | idam: these words | śatrughnam: to Shatrughna. |

TRANSLATION

Soon after encamping the army in a well-behaved manner per the guidelines, Bharata spoke the following words to Shatrughna:

VERSE 3

क्षिप्रम् वनम् इदम् सौम्य नर सम्घैः समन्ततः
लुब्धैः च सहितैर् एभिः त्वम् अन्वेषितुम् अर्हसि

kṣipram vanam idam saumya nara samghaiḥ samantataḥ
lubdhaiḥ ca sahitair ebhiḥ tvam anveṣitum arhasi

SYNONYMS

saumyaḥ: O | tvam: you | narasaṅghaiḥ: along with a troop of men | lubdhaiśca sahitaiḥ: and along with trackers | arhasi: ought | anveṣitum: to search | samantataḥ: on all sides | idam anam: of this forest. |

TRANSLATION

"O, gentle brother! You, along with a troop of men and trackers, ought to search on all sides of this forest."

VERSE 4

गुहो ज्ञातिसहस्रेण शरचापासिधारिणा
समन्वेषतु काकुत्थ्समस्मिन् परिवृतः स्वयम्

guho jñātisahasreṇa śaracāpāsidhāriṇā
samanveṣatu kākutthsamasmin parivṛtaḥ svayam

SYNONYMS

guhaḥ: (Let) Guha | svayam: himself | samanveṣutu: search | kākutthsau: for Rama and Lakshmana | asmin: in this forest | parivṛtaḥ: accompanied | j^ṇāti sahasreṇa: by his multitude of kinsmen | śara cāpāsi dhāriṇā: wielding arrows |

TRANSLATION

"Let Guha search for Rama and Lakshmana in this forest, himself accompanied by a multitude of his kinsmen, duly wielding their bows, arrows and swords."

VERSE 5

अमात्यैः सह पौरैश्च गुरुभिश्च द्विजातिभिः
वनं सर्वं चरिष्यामि पद्भ्यां परिवृतः स्वयम्

amātyaiḥ saha pauraiśca gurubhiśca dvijātibhiḥ
vanaṃ sarvaṃ cariṣyāmi padbhyāṃ parivṛtaḥ svayam

SYNONYMS

svayam: I | parivṛtaḥ: encircled | amātyaiḥ saha: along with ministers | parveśca: citizens | gurubhiśca: priests | dvijātibhiḥ: and Brahmanas | cariṣyāmi: shall move | padbhyām: by foot | sarvam: in the entire | vanam: forest. |

TRANSLATION

"I too, surrounded by the ministers, citizens, priests and Brahmanas; shall personally go round the entire forest on foot.

VERSE 6

यावन् न रामम् द्रक्ष्यामि लक्ष्मणम् वा महा बलम्
वैदेहीम् वा महा भागाम् न मे शान्तिर् भविष्यति

yāvan na rāmam drakṣyāmi lakṣmaṇam vā mahā balam
vaidehīm vā mahā bhāgām na me śāntir bhaviṣyati

SYNONYMS

śāntiḥ: peace | na bhaviṣyati: will not come | me: to me | yāvat: until which time | na drakṣyāmi: I do not see | rāmam: Rama | mahābalam: the immensely strong | lakṣmaṇam vā: Lakshmana or | mahābhāgam: the illustrious | vaidehīm vā: Seetha. |

TRANSLATION

"Peace will not be with me until I do not see Rama or the very mighty Lakshmana or the illustrious Seetha."

VERSE 7

यावन् न चन्द्र सम्काशम् द्रक्ष्यामि शुभम् आननम्
भ्रातुः पद्म पलाश अक्षम् न मे शान्तिर् भविष्यति

yāvan na candra samkāśam drakṣyāmi śubham ānanam
bhrātuḥ padma palāśa akṣam na me śāntir bhaviṣyati

SYNONYMS

śāntiḥ: peace | na bhaviṣyati: will not be | me: with me | yāvat: until which time | na drakṣyāmi: I do not see | śubham: the auspicious | ānanam: face | bhrātuḥ: of my elder brother | candra samkāśam: resembling the moon | padma palāśakṣam: having eyes like lotus = leaves. |

TRANSLATION

"Peace will not be with me until I do not see the auspicious face of my elder brother, resembling the moon and having eyes bearing resemblance to lotus-leaves.

VERSE 8

यावन् न चरणौ भ्रातुः पार्थिव व्यन्जन अन्वितौ
शिरसा धारयिष्यामि न मे शान्तिर् भविष्यति

yāvan na caraṇau bhrātuḥ pārthiva vyanjana anvitau
śirasā dhārayiṣyāmi na me śāntir bhaviṣyati

SYNONYMS

śāntiḥ: peace | na bhaviṣyati: will not be | me: with me | yāvat: until which time | na dhārayiṣyāmi: I do not hold | śirasā: on my head | caraṇau: the soles | bhrātuḥ: of my elder brother | pārthiva vyaṅjanānvitau: bearubg ritak ubsugbua |

TRANSLATION

"Peace will nt be with me until I do not hold firmly on my head, the soles of my elder brother, bearing royal insignia.

VERSE 9

यावन् राज्ये राज्य अर्हः पितृ पैतामहे स्थितः
अभिषेक जल क्लिन्नो न मे शान्तिर् भविष्यति

yāvan rājye rājya arhaḥ pitṛ paitāmahe sthitaḥ
abhiṣeka jala klinno na me śāntir bhaviṣyati

SYNONYMS

śāntiḥ: peace | na bhaviṣyati: will not be | me: with me | yāvat: until which time | rājyārhaḥ: my elder brother eligible for the crown | na sthitaḥ: is not installed | rājya: in the kingdom | pitṛpaitāmahe: which was derived from father and grandfather | abhiṣeka jalaklinnaḥ: and consecrated by sprinkling water (on his head). |

TRANSLATION

"Peace will not come to me until my elder brother, who is eligible for the crown, is not installed in the kingdom of Ayodhya, which was derived from our father and grand father and consecrated by sprinkling water on his head (as a symbol of crowing the kingdom)."

VERSE 10

सिद्धार्थः खलु सौमित्रिर्यश्चन्द्रविमलोवमम्
मुखं पश्यति रामस्य राजीवाक्षं महाद्युति

siddhārthaḥ khalu saumitriryaścandravimalovamam
mukhaṃ paśyati rāmasya rājīvākṣaṃ mahādyuti

SYNONYMS

saumitriḥ: Lakshmana | yaḥ: who | paśyati: is seeing | mukham: the face | rāmasya: of Rama | mahā dyuti: having a great luminance | candra vimalopamam: resembling the bright moon | rājīvakṣam: and having lotus = eyes | siddhārthaḥ khalu: is indeed an accomplished man. |

TRANSLATION

"Lakshmana, who is seeing regularly the face of Rama having a great luminance resembling the bright moon and having lotus eyes, is indeed an accomplished man."

VERSE 11

कृत कृत्या महा भागा वैदेही जनक आत्मजा
भर्तारम् सागर अन्तायाः पृथिव्या या अनुगग्च्छति

kṛta kṛtyā mahā bhāgā vaidehī janaka ātmajā
bhartāram sāgara antāyāḥ pṛthivyā yā anugagcchati

SYNONYMS

mahābhāgā: the illustrious | vaidehī: Seetha | janakātmajā: the daughter of Janaka | : who | anugacchati: is following | bhartāram: the Lord | pṛthivyāḥ: of the earth | sāgarāntayāḥ: extending to the sea | kṛta kṛtyā: has fulfilled her object. |

TRANSLATION

"Seetha, the illustrious daughter of Janaka, who is following the steps of Rama the Lord of the earth extending to the sea, has fulfilled her object."

VERSE 12

सुभगः चित्र कूटो असौ गिरि राज उपमो गिरिः
यस्मिन् वसति काकुत्स्थः कुबेर इव नन्दने

subhagaḥ citra kūṭo asau giri rāja upamo giriḥ
yasmin vasati kākutsthaḥ kubera iva nandane

SYNONYMS

asau: that | subhagaḥ: enchanting | citrakūṭaḥ giriḥ: mountain of Chitrakuta | girirājopamaḥ: resembles the King of mountains | yasmin: on which | kākutthsaḥ: Rama | vasati: is residing | kuberaḥ iva: as Kubera the Lord of riches | nanadane: is living in the garden of nandana." |

TRANSLATION

"That enchanting mountain of Chitrakuta resembles the King of Mountains on which Rama is residing, as Kubera the Lord of riches is living in the garden of Nandana."

VERSE 13

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये अयोध्यकाण्डे अष्टनवतितमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye ayodhyakāṇḍe aṣṭanavatitamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

kṛtakāryam: Blessed | idam: is this | durgam: dense | vanam: forest | vyāla niṣevitam: inhabited by wild animals | yat: where | mahātejāḥ: the great warrior | varaḥ: the excellent | śastrabhṛtām: among the wielders of raamaH = Rama | adhyāste: dwells |

TRANSLATION

"Blessed is this dense forest, inhabited by wild animals, where Rama, the great warrior and the excellent man among the wielders of weapons, dwells."
