VERSE 1

एवमुक्ता तु कैकेयी कोपेन ज्वलितानना
दीर्घमुष्टम् विनिःश्वस्य मन्थरामिदम् अब्रवीत्

evamuktā tu kaikeyī kopena jvalitānanā
dīrghamuṣṭam viniḥśvasya mantharāmidam abravīt

SYNONYMS

uktā: having been spoken | evam: thus | kaikeyī: Kaikeyi | jvalita ānanā: having a burning face | kopena: with anger | viniḥśvasya: sighed | dīrgham: lengthily | uṣṇam: heatedly | abravīt: spoke | idam: these words | mantharām: to Manthara. |

TRANSLATION

After hearing those words, Kaikeyi with her face burning with anger, had a long and hot sigh and spoke to Manthara as follows:

VERSE 2

अद्य राममितः क्षिप्रं वनं प्रस्थापयाम्यहम्
यौवराज्ये च भरतं क्षिप्रमेवाभिषेचये

adya rāmamitaḥ kṣipraṃ vanaṃ prasthāpayāmyaham
yauvarājye ca bharataṃ kṣipramevābhiṣecaye

SYNONYMS

adya: now | aham: I | prasthāpayāmi rāmam: shall make Rama to travel | kṣipram: quickly | vanam: to forest | itaḥ: from here | abhiṣecayāmi bharatam ca: I shall also get Bharata anointed | youvarājye: for princely kingdom | kṣiprameva: even quickly. |

TRANSLATION

"Now itself, I shall send Rama quickly to forest. I shall get Bharata anointed for princely kingdom immediately."

VERSE 3

इदं त्विदानीं संपश्य केनोपायेन मन्थरे
भरतः प्राप्नुयाद्राज्यं न तु रामः कथंचन

idaṃ tvidānīṃ saṃpaśya kenopāyena manthare
bharataḥ prāpnuyādrājyaṃ na tu rāmaḥ kathaṃcana

SYNONYMS

manthara: O Manthara! kena upaayena = what is the means by which | bharataḥ: Bharata | prāpūyāt: will get | rājyam: kingdom | rāmaḥ tu: but Rama | na: (will) not (get) | kathamecana: by any method | sampasya: see | idam: this | idānīm: now. |

TRANSLATION

"O Manthara! What is the means by which Bharata will get the kingdom but Rama will not get it by any method. Think about it now."

VERSE 4

एवमुक्ता तया देव्या मन्थरा पापदर्शिनी
रामार्थमुपहिंसन्ती कैकेयीमिदमब्रवीत्

evamuktā tayā devyā mantharā pāpadarśinī
rāmārthamupahiṃsantī kaikeyīmidamabravīt

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

After hearing her words, the sinful thinking Manthara, spoke thus to Kaikeyi to destroy Rama's benefit of kingdom.

VERSE 5

हन्तेदानीं प्रवक्ष्यामि कैकेयि श्रूयतां च मे
यथा ते भरतो राज्यं पुत्रः प्राप्स्यति केवलम्

hantedānīṃ pravakṣyāmi kaikeyi śrūyatāṃ ca me
yathā te bharato rājyaṃ putraḥ prāpsyati kevalam

SYNONYMS

kaikeyi: O Kaikeyi! hanta = (I am) very glad! pravakshhyaami = I will tell | yathā: how | te putraḥ: your son | bharataḥ: Bharata | kevalam: only | prāpsyati: will get | rājyam: kingdom | me śrūyatāmca: let I be listened. |

TRANSLATION

"O Kaikeyi! I am very glad. I shall tell you the means by which your son Bharata only will get the kingdom. Listen to it!"

VERSE 6

किं न स्मरसि कैकेयि स्मरन्ती वा निगूहसे
यदुच्यमानमात्मार्थं मत्तस्त्वं श्रोतुमिच्छसि

kiṃ na smarasi kaikeyi smarantī vā nigūhase
yaducyamānamātmārthaṃ mattastvaṃ śrotumicchasi

SYNONYMS

kaikeyi: O Kaikeyi! tvam yat ichchhati = you are desiring | śrotam: to hear | mattaḥ: from me | ucyamānam: the thing to be stated | ātmānam: for your benefit | na smarasi kim: are you not remebering it | smarantī: though remembering | nigūhase vā: (are you) hiding? |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, Kaikeyi! You desire to hear from me the means for your benefit. Have you forgotten about it or are you hiding, even if you have remembered it?"

VERSE 7

मयोच्यमानं यदि ते श्रोतुं च्छ्न्दो विलासिनि
श्रूयतामभिधास्यामि श्रुत्वा चैतद् विधीयताम्

mayocyamānaṃ yadi te śrotuṃ cchndo vilāsini
śrūyatāmabhidhāsyāmi śrutvā caitad vidhīyatām

SYNONYMS

vilāsini: o lady full of charms! chhandaH yadi = If it is desired | te: by you | śrotum: to hear | ucyamānam: telling mayaa = by me | abhidhāsyāmi: I shall tell you | śrūyatām: let it be heard | śrutvā: after hearing | vidhīyatām etad ca: let it be acted upon also. |

TRANSLATION

"O the lady of charms, Kaikeyi! If you desire to hear this from my mouth, I shall tell you. Listen to me. Let it be acted upon after listening to me."

VERSE 8

श्रुत्वैवं वचनं तस्या मन्थरायास्तु कैकयि
किंचिदुत्थाय शयनात्स्वास्तीर्णादिदमब्रवीत्

śrutvaivaṃ vacanaṃ tasyā mantharāyāstu kaikayi
kiṃcidutthāya śayanātsvāstīrṇādidamabravīt

SYNONYMS

śruttvaiva: after hearing | evam: these | vacanam: words | mantharāyāḥ: of Manthara | kaikeyī: Kaikeyi | utthāya: rose | kiñcit: a little | svāstīrṇāt śayanāt: from well laid bed | abravīt: and spoke | idam: these words. |

TRANSLATION

After hearing Manthara's words, Kaikeyi slightly rose from the well-laid bed and spoke the following :

VERSE 9

कथय त्वं ममोपायं केनोपायेन मन्थरे
भरतः प्राप्नुयाद्रज्यं न तु रामः कथंचन

kathaya tvaṃ mamopāyaṃ kenopāyena manthare
bharataḥ prāpnuyādrajyaṃ na tu rāmaḥ kathaṃcana

SYNONYMS

manthare: o Manthara! tvam = you | kathaya: tell | mama: me | kena upāyena: by what means | bharataḥ: Bharata | prāpnuyāt: will get | rājyam: kingdom | rāmaḥ tu: but Rama | na: (will) not (get) | kathamcana: by any count | upāyam: that trick. |

TRANSLATION

"O Manthara! Tell me the trick by which Bharata will get the kingdom and Rama will not get it under any circumstances."

VERSE 10

एवमुक्ता तया देव्या मन्थरा पापदर्शिनी
रामार्थमुपहिंसन्ती कुब्जा वचनमब्रवीत्

evamuktā tayā devyā mantharā pāpadarśinī
rāmārthamupahiṃsantī kubjā vacanamabravīt

SYNONYMS

uktā: after being spoken | evam: thus | tayā devyā: by that queen Kaikeyi | kubjā: the hunch backed | mantharā: Manthara | pāpadarśinī: the sinful thinker | abravīt: spoke | vacanam: these words | upahimsantīm: to destroy | rāmārtham: Rama's benefit. |

TRANSLATION

After hearing Kaikeyi's words, the sinful thinking, hunch backed Manthara, spoke thus, with an intention to destroy Rama's benefit of kingdom.

VERSE 11

तव दैवासुरे युद्धे सहराजर्षिभिः पतिः
अगच्छत्त्वामुपादाय देवराजस्य साह्यकृत्

tava daivāsure yuddhe saharājarṣibhiḥ patiḥ
agacchattvāmupādāya devarājasya sāhyakṛt

SYNONYMS

12| devi: O queen! yuddhe = in a battle | devāsure: between celestials and demons tava patiH = your husband | upādāya: taking | tvām: you | rājarṣibhiḥ saha: along with holy kings | agacchat: went | sāhyakṛti: to help | devarājasya: king Devendra | puram: to the city | khyātam: famously | vaijayantamiti: called Vaijayanta | yatra: where | timidhvajaḥ: Timidhvaja (resided) | āsthāya: getting into | dakṣiṇām diśam: southern direction | daṇdakān prati: towards forest of Dandaka. |

TRANSLATION

"O Queen! Once upon a time, when there was a battle between celestials and demons, your husband Dasaratha went along with you and other holy kings to help Indra in battle, to a famous city called Vaijayata in which the demon Timidhvaja lived in a southern direction in the forest of Dandaka."

VERSE 13

स शम्बर इति ख्यातः शतमायो महासुरः
ददौ शक्रस्य संग्रामं देवसङिघैरनिर्जितः

sa śambara iti khyātaḥ śatamāyo mahāsuraḥ
dadau śakrasya saṃgrāmaṃ devasaṅighairanirjitaḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ mahāsuraḥ: That great demon | khyātaḥ: famous | śambaraḥ: as shambara | śatamāyaḥ: who had several magic effects | anarjitaḥ: not being defeated | devasanghaiḥ: by celestrial groups | dadau: gave | sangrāmam: battle | śakrasya: to Devendra. |

TRANSLATION

"That great demon famously called shambara, who had several magic effects, defeated all the celestials and conferred battle upon Devendra."

VERSE 14

तस्मिन् महति संग्रामे पुरुषान् क्षतविक्षतान्
रात्रौ प्रसुप्तान् घ्नन्ति स्म तरसासाद्य राक्षसाः

tasmin mahati saṃgrāme puruṣān kṣatavikṣatān
rātrau prasuptān ghnanti sma tarasāsādya rākṣasāḥ

SYNONYMS

tasmin mahati sangrāme: in that great battle | rākṣasāḥ: demons | āsādya: approached | tarasā: by force | ghnantisma: and killed | puruśān: men | kṣatavikṣatān: who were beaten by arrows | prasuptān: and those sleeping | rātrau: in the night. |

TRANSLATION

"In that great battle, demons approached and forcefully killed men who were injured by arrows and also those who were sleeping at night."

PURPORT

Comment : It is not a virtuous practice according to scriptures, to kill injured people and defenceless people sleeping at night. Demons do not follow such scriptures.
VERSE 15

तत्राकरोन्महायुद्धं राजा दशरथ स्तदा
असुरैश्च महाबाहुः शस्त्रैश्च शकलीकृतः

tatrākaronmahāyuddhaṃ rājā daśaratha stadā
asuraiśca mahābāhuḥ śastraiśca śakalīkṛtaḥ

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | daśarathaḥ rājā: king Dasaratha | akarot: created | mahāyuddham: great battle | tatra: there | mahābāhuḥ: the long armed Dasaratha | śakalīṛtaḥ ca: was made into pieces | śastraiaḥ: with weapons | asuraiḥ ca: by demons. |

TRANSLATION

"Then, king Dasaratha fought a great battle there. With their weapons, demons made into pieces the long armed Dasaratha."

VERSE 16

अपवाह्य त्वया देवि संग्रामान्नष्टचेतनः
तत्रपि विक्षतः शस्रैः पतिस्ते रक्षितस्त्वया

apavāhya tvayā devi saṃgrāmānnaṣṭacetanaḥ
tatrapi vikṣataḥ śasraiḥ patiste rakṣitastvayā

SYNONYMS

devi: O queen! nashhTa chetanaH = Dasaratha | rakṣitaḥ: was saved | tvayā: by you. | apavāhya: by taking him away | sangrāmāt: from battle field | tatrāpi: there also | te patiḥ: your husband | vikṣataḥ: who was beaten | śastraiḥ: by weapons |

TRANSLATION

"O Queen! You saved the life of your unconscious husband by taking him away from the battle field. There also, you again saved him, when beaten by demons with their weapons."

VERSE 17

तुष्टेन तेन दत्तौ ते द्वौ वरौ शुभदर्शने
सत्वयोक्तः पतिर्देवि यदेच्छेयं तदा वरौ

tuṣṭena tena dattau te dvau varau śubhadarśane
satvayoktaḥ patirdevi yadeccheyaṃ tadā varau

SYNONYMS

śubhadarśane: O Kaikeyi with auspicious appearance! tushhTena = after getting delighted | tena: by him | dattau: were given | te: to you | dvou: two | varau: boons | saḥ patiḥ: that husband | uktaḥ: was told | tvayā: by you | gṛhṇīyām iti: that I shall take | yadā tadā: as and when | iccheyam: desired by me | uktam: said | tena mahātmanā: by that great souled Dasaratha | tathā iti: let it be | tat: that. |

TRANSLATION

"O Kaikeyi with auspicious appearance! Getting delighted, he gave two boons to you. Then, you said, " I shall ask you whenever I require them". He then agreed to it."

VERSE 18

अनभिज्ञा ह्यहं देवि त्वयैव कथिता पुरा

anabhijñā hyahaṃ devi tvayaiva kathitā purā

SYNONYMS

19| devi: o queen! aham = I | anabhiṇzyāhi: do not know anything about this matter | purā: previously | eṣā kathā: this story | kathitā: was told | tvayaiva: by you only | dhāryate: being kept | mayā: by me | manasā: in mind | snehāt tu: due to friendship | vinivartaya: stop | rāmābhiṣeka sambhārān: arragnments of Rama's anointment | nigṛhya: by force. |

TRANSLATION

"O Queen! I do not know what had happened there. You yourself told this story previously to me. I am keeping this in my mind because of my friendship with you. Hence, you have to stop, by force, the arrangements being made for Rama's coronation."

VERSE 20

तौ वरौ याच भर्तारं भरतस्याभिषेचनम्
प्रव्राजनं तु रामस्य त्वं वर्षाणि चतुर्दश

tau varau yāca bhartāraṃ bharatasyābhiṣecanam
pravrājanaṃ tu rāmasya tvaṃ varṣāṇi caturdaśa

SYNONYMS

tvam: you | yāca: ask | bhartāram: your husband | tau: those (two) | varau: boons | bharatasya: Bharata's abhishhechanam = anointment (and) | rāmasya: Rama's | pravrājanam: sending to exile | caturdaśa varṣāṇi: for fourteen years. |

TRANSLATION

"You ask your husband as two boons, anointing Bharata for princely kingdom and sending Rama to exile for fourteen years."

VERSE 21

चतुर्दश हि वर्षाणिरामे प्रव्राजिते वनम्
प्रजाभावगतस्नेहः स्थिरः पुत्रो भविष्यति

caturdaśa hi varṣāṇirāme pravrājite vanam
prajābhāvagatasnehaḥ sthiraḥ putro bhaviṣyati

SYNONYMS

pravrājite: if you send | rāme: Rama | caturdaśavarṣāṇi: for fourseen years | vanam: to forest | putraḥ: your son | prajābhāvagatasnehaḥ: will get intimate association in the people's hearts | sthiraḥ bhaviṣyati: and will become stable. |

TRANSLATION

If you send Rama to forest for fourteen years, your son Bharata will get intimate association in the hearts of the people and will get stabilised in kingdom.

VERSE 22

क्रोधागारं प्रविश्याद्य कृद्द्धेवाश्वपतेः सुते
शेष्वानन्तर्हितायां त्वं भूमौ मलिनवासिनी

krodhāgāraṃ praviśyādya kṛdddhevāśvapateḥ sute
śeṣvānantarhitāyāṃ tvaṃ bhūmau malinavāsinī

SYNONYMS

asvapetḥ sute: oh | k͟haikeyi the daughter of āsvapati! adya: now | praviśya: enter | krodhāgāram: the room of wrath | dṛddheva: as if angry | śeṣva: and lie down | bhūmau: on floor | anantarhitāyām: without any spread | malinavāsinī: and wearing soiled clothes. |

TRANSLATION

Oh, kaikeyi! Now, enter the room of wrath as if angry with him and lie down on floor without any spread underneath and wearing soiled clothes.

VERSE 23

मास्मैनं प्रत्युदीक्षेथा माचैन मभिभाषथाः
रुदन्ती चापि तं दृष्ट्वा जगत्यां शोकलालसा

māsmainaṃ pratyudīkṣethā mācaina mabhibhāṣathāḥ
rudantī cāpi taṃ dṛṣṭvā jagatyāṃ śokalālasā

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: after seeing | tam: that Dasaratha | śokalālasā: be sorrowful | rudantī: and by weaping | māsma pratyudīkṣethāḥ: do not look face to face | enam: to him. | mācaiva abhibhāṣatāḥ: nor talk |

TRANSLATION

As soon as you see Dasaratha, be sorrowful and keep on weeping, without looking at him and without talking to him face to face.

VERSE 24

दयिता त्वं सदा भर्तुरत्र मे नास्ति संशयः
त्वत्कृते स महाराजो विशेदपि हुताशनम्

dayitā tvaṃ sadā bharturatra me nāsti saṃśayaḥ
tvatkṛte sa mahārājo viśedapi hutāśanam

SYNONYMS

tvam: you | sadā: always | dayitā: dear one | bhartuḥ: to husband | nāsti: no | samsayaḥ: doubt | me: to me | atra: about this | saḥ mahārājaḥ: that king | viśedapi: will even enter | hutāśanam: fire | tvatkṛte: for your sake. |

TRANSLATION

You are always dear to your husband. I have no doubt about it. King Dasaratha will even jump into a fire for your sake.

VERSE 25

न त्वां क्रोधयितुं शक्तोन क्रुद्धां प्रत्युदीक्षितुम्
तव प्रियार्थं राजा हि प्राणानपि परित्यजेत्

na tvāṃ krodhayituṃ śaktona kruddhāṃ pratyudīkṣitum
tava priyārthaṃ rājā hi prāṇānapi parityajet

SYNONYMS

rājā: the king na shaktaH = is not capable | tvām krodhayitum: of making you angry | na: not able | dīkṣitum: to see | kruddhām: you with anger | parityajet hi: he will give up | prāṇānapi: even life | tava priyārtham: for your love. |

TRANSLATION

The king is not capable of making you angry. He is not even able to see you with anger. He will give up his life for your love.

VERSE 26

न ह्यतिक्रमितुं शक्तस्तव वाक्यं महीपतिः
मन्दस्वभावे बुद्ध्यस्व सौभाग्यबलमात्मनः

na hyatikramituṃ śaktastava vākyaṃ mahīpatiḥ
mandasvabhāve buddhyasva saubhāgyabalamātmanaḥ

SYNONYMS

manda svabhāve: oh | fūliś one! mahīpatiḥ: king | naśaktaḥ hi: will not transgress | tava: your | vākyam: words | buddhyastva: you know | ātmanaḥ: your | saubhāgya balam: abundant strength. |

TRANSLATION

Oh, foolish one! The king will not be able to transgress your word. You realise your abundant strength.

VERSE 27

मणिमुक्तं सुवर्णानि रत्नानि विविधानि च
दद्याद्धशरथो राजा मा स्म तेषु मनः कृथाः

maṇimuktaṃ suvarṇāni ratnāni vividhāni ca
dadyāddhaśaratho rājā mā sma teṣu manaḥ kṛthāḥ

SYNONYMS

daśarathaḥ rājā: king Dasaratha | dadyāt: may give | maṇi muktam: diamonds | suvarṇāmi: gold | vividhāni: various | ratnānica: precious stones | mākṟithāḥ: do not keep | manaḥ: mind | teṣu: in them. |

TRANSLATION

King Dasaratha may offer you diamonds, pearls, gold and various other precious stones. Do not care for them.

VERSE 28

यौ तौ दैवासुरे युद्धे वरौ द्शरथो।अददात्
तौ स्मारय महाभागे सो।अर्थो मात्वामतिक्रमेत्

yau tau daivāsure yuddhe varau dśaratho|adadāt
tau smāraya mahābhāge so|artho mātvāmatikramet

SYNONYMS

mahābhāge: oh Kaikeyi | the great fortunate one! smāraya: remind | dasarathaḥ: Dasaratha | daivāsurayuddhe: in battle between celestials | you: which | tau: those boons | varau: boons | adadāt: were given | arthaḥ: benefit | mātikramet: not to cross. tvaa |

TRANSLATION

Oh, Kaikeyi, the great fortunate! you remind Dasaratha of those boons given by him to you in that battle between celestials and demons. See that your benefit does not get thwarted.

VERSE 29

यदा तु ते वरं दद्यात्स्वयमुत्थाप्य राघवः
व्यवस्थाप्य महाराजं तमिमं वृणुया वरम्

yadā tu te varaṃ dadyātsvayamutthāpya rāghavaḥ
vyavasthāpya mahārājaṃ tamimaṃ vṛṇuyā varam

SYNONYMS

yadā: when | rāghavaḥ: Dasaratha | svayam: himself | utthāpya: will raise you from the floor | dadyāt: and give | te: you | varam: the boon | mahārajam vyavasthāpya: after making the king steady | vriṇuyāḥ: ask | imam varam: this boon. |

TRANSLATION

Dasaratha himself will raise you from the floor and offer you the boon. Thus , after making him steady, you ask for this boon.

VERSE 30

रामं प्रव्राजयारण्ये नव वर्षाणि पञ्च च
भरतः क्रियतां राजा पृथिव्याः पार्थिवर्षभ

rāmaṃ pravrājayāraṇye nava varṣāṇi pañca ca
bharataḥ kriyatāṃ rājā pṛthivyāḥ pārthivarṣabha

SYNONYMS

pārthivarṣabha: oh | king! pravrājaya: send to exile | rāmam: Rama | aranye: in forest | nava pancaca varṣāṇi: for fourteen years | bharataḥ kriyatām: let Bharata be made | rājā: as king | prithivyāḥ: to this earth. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, king! send Rama to forest for fourteen years. Let Bharata be made as king of this earth".

VERSE 31

चतुर्दश हि वर्षाणि रामे प्रव्राजिते वन्म्
रूढश्च कृतमूलश्च शेषं स्थास्यति ते सुतः

caturdaśa hi varṣāṇi rāme pravrājite vanm
rūḍhaśca kṛtamūlaśca śeṣaṃ sthāsyati te sutaḥ

SYNONYMS

rāmaḥ: Rama | pravrājite: having been sent | vanam: to forest | caturdaśavarṣāṇi: for fourteen years | te sutaḥ: your son | rūdhaḥ ca: will stand firmly | kritamūlaḥ ca: having laid roots and | sthāsyati: will stay | śeṣaṃ: for remaining period. |

TRANSLATION

Rama having been sent to forest for fourteen years, your son will stand firmly, having laid his roots and will stay in power for the remaining period.

VERSE 32

रामप्रव्राजनं चैव देवि याचस्व तं वरम्
एवं सिद्ध्यन्ति पुत्रस्य सर्वार्थास्तव भामिनि

rāmapravrājanaṃ caiva devi yācasva taṃ varam
evaṃ siddhyanti putrasya sarvārthāstava bhāmini

SYNONYMS

devi: oh | quīn! yācasva: ask | tam: him | rāmapravrājanamchaiva: of sending Rama to forest also | varam: as a boom | evam: thus | tava: your | putrasya: son's | sarvārthāḥ: all benefits | siddhyanti: will be accomplished. |

TRANSLATION

Oh, Kaikeyi! Ask Dasaratha of sending Rama to forest also as a boon. Thus, your son will accomplish all the desired benefits.

VERSE 33

एवं प्रव्राजितश्चैव रामो।अरामो भविष्यति
भरतश्च हतामित्रस्तव राजा भविष्यति

evaṃ pravrājitaścaiva rāmo|arāmo bhaviṣyati
bharataśca hatāmitrastava rājā bhaviṣyati

SYNONYMS

evam: thus | pravrājitaḥ: by sending to exile | rāmaḥ: Rama | bhaviṣyati: will become | arāmaḥ: not amiable to people | tava: your | bharatasca: Bharata | rājā: king | hatāmitrasca: the enemies having been annihilated. |

TRANSLATION

Thus , by sending Rama to exile, he will not become amiable to people. Your Bharata will become king, after the enemies having been annihilated.

VERSE 34

येन कालेन रामश्च वनात्प्रत्यागमिष्यति
तेन कालेन पुत्रस्ते कृतमूलो भविष्यति

yena kālena rāmaśca vanātpratyāgamiṣyati
tena kālena putraste kṛtamūlo bhaviṣyati

SYNONYMS

yena kālena: by which time | rāmaḥ ca: Rama | pratyāgamiṣyati: returns | vanāt: from forest | tena kālena: by that time | te: your | ātmavān: wise | putraḥ: son | sugṛhīta manuṣyaḥ: having drawn people to his fold | suhridbhiḥ: and friends also | bhaviṣyati: will become | kṛtamūlaḥ: one by whom roots are established. |

TRANSLATION

When Rama returns from forest, your wise son will accumulate friends and draw people to his fold, thus establishing roots himself.

VERSE 35

प्राप्तकालं नु मन्ये।अहं राजानं वीतसाध्वसा

prāptakālaṃ nu manye|ahaṃ rājānaṃ vītasādhvasā

SYNONYMS

manye: I think | praptakālam tu: that it is the appropriate time | te: to you | vīta sādhvasā: after bequeathing fear | nigrihya: and by insistence | rājānam vimivartaya: make the king turn aside | rāmābhiṣeka sankalpāt: his desire to anoint Rama. |

TRANSLATION

This is the appropriate time for you. Be fearless and by your insistence, make the king turn aside his effort to anoint Rama.

VERSE 36

अनर्थमर्थरूपेण ग्राहिता सा ततस्तया

anarthamartharūpeṇa grāhitā sā tatastayā

SYNONYMS

sā kaikeyī: that kaikeyi | grahitā: having been taught | anartham: unworthy matter | artharūpeṇa: in the form of a worthy matter | tayā: by that Manthara | tataḥ: afterwards | hṛsṭā: having delighted | pratītā: and understood | abravīt: spoke | mantharām: to Manthara | idam: these words. |

TRANSLATION

Kaikeyi, being brain-washed an unworthy matter as the most worthy matter by Manthara, accepted her well and having delighted, spoke to her as follows:-

VERSE 37

सा हि वाक्येन कुब्जायाः किशोरीवोत्पथं गता
कैकेयी विस्मयं प्राप्ता परं परमदर्शना

sā hi vākyena kubjāyāḥ kiśorīvotpathaṃ gatā
kaikeyī vismayaṃ prāptā paraṃ paramadarśanā

SYNONYMS

sā kaikeyi: That Kaikeyi | paramadarśanā: the good natured | param vismayam gatā: was very much surprised | vākyena: by words of | kubjāyāḥ: the hunch backed Manthara | kiśorīva: and like a small girl | gatā: got | utpatham: into a wrong path. |

TRANSLATION

Though of right thinking in nature, Kaikeyi was very much surprised to hear Manthara's words and like a small girl, got into a wrong path.

VERSE 38

कुब्जे त्वां नाभिजानामि श्रेष्ठां श्रेष्ठभिधायिनीम्
पृथिव्यामसि कुब्जानामुत्तमा बुद्धिनिर्णये

kubje tvāṃ nābhijānāmi śreṣṭhāṃ śreṣṭhabhidhāyinīm
pṛthivyāmasi kubjānāmuttamā buddhinirṇaye

SYNONYMS

kubje: oh | ṃanthara the hunc backed! nābhijānāmi: I have not recognised | tvām: you | śreṣṭām: as the best | śreṣṭābhidhayinīm: in telling good things | uttamāsi: you are the best | kubjānām: among the hunch backed | pṛthivyām: on earth | buddhiniścaye: in deciding intellectually. |

TRANSLATION

Oh, Manthara! You are telling very good things. Till now, I have not recognised you as this good. You are the best among the hunch-backed on this earth in making intellectual decisions.

VERSE 39

त्वमेव तु ममार्थेषु नित्ययुक्ता हितैषिणी

tvameva tu mamārtheṣu nityayuktā hitaiṣiṇī

SYNONYMS

kubje: oh | tvameva: you only | nityayuktā: are always interested | mama: in my | artheṣu: well being | hitaiṣiṇī: and wishing my benefit | aham: I | nasamavabuddhyeyam: would not have been aware of | rāġyaḥ: kings's | cikīrṣitam: intending action. |

TRANSLATION

Oh, Manthara! you always show interest in my well being and wish for my benefit. But for you, I would not have been aware of the king's intentions.

VERSE 40

सन्ति दुःसंस्थिताः कुब्जा वक्राः परमदारुणाः

santi duḥsaṃsthitāḥ kubjā vakrāḥ paramadāruṇāḥ

SYNONYMS

santi: there are kubjaaH = hunch backed persons | duḥ|samsthitāḥ: those with bad body construction | vakrāḥ: crooked ones | paramadāruṇāḥ: extremely dreadful | tvam: you | priyadarśanāḥ: appear lovely | padmamiva: like lotus | samnatā: bent | vatena: by breeze. |

TRANSLATION

There are so many hunch backed persons in the world. Their bodily construction is very bad. They are crooked and dreadful. But you appear lovely, as a lotus flower bent by breeze.

VERSE 41

उरस्ते।अभिनिविष्टं वै यावत् स्कन्धात्समुन्नतम्

uraste|abhiniviṣṭaṃ vai yāvat skandhātsamunnatam

SYNONYMS

te uraḥ: your chest | abhinivisṭam: appears equally on both sides | samunnatam: and in lofty | yāvatskandāt: upto the shoulders | adhastāt: below it is | sunābham: good movelled | udaramca: stomach | śātam: is lien | lajjitam iva: as though it is shy. |

TRANSLATION

Your chest is appearing equally on both sides and is loftily extended unto the shoulder. Below it is the stomach with an excellent navel, which is lean as though it is shy of seeing the loftiness of chest.

VERSE 42

परिपूर्णं तु जघनं सुपीनौ च पयोधरौ

paripūrṇaṃ tu jaghanaṃ supīnau ca payodharau

SYNONYMS

manthare: oh | ṃanthara! paripurunam: with perfect | jaghanam: hips | supīnou: with well rounded | payodharou: chest | vaktram: face | vimalendu samam: equal to untainted moon | aho: her | rājasi: shining you are! |

TRANSLATION

Oh, Manthara! with perfect hips and well rounded breasts and with your face like an untainted moon you are shining well.

VERSE 43

जघनं तव निर्घुष्टं रशनादामशोभितम्

jaghanaṃ tava nirghuṣṭaṃ raśanādāmaśobhitam

SYNONYMS

tava: your | jaghanam: waist | raśanā dāma śobhitam: shining with golden belt | nirghusṭam: is making sound | jaṅghe: leg muscles | bhṛśam: very well | upanyaste: rounded up | ubhou: both | pādou ca: feet also | āyatou: are long. |

TRANSLATION

Oh, Manthara! your waist decorated with golden belt is making sound. Your leg-muscles are well rounded and your feet are tall.

VERSE 44

त्वमायताभ्यां सक्थिभ्यां मन्थरे क्षौमवासिनी
अग्रतो मम गच्छन्ती राजहंसेव भाससे

tvamāyatābhyāṃ sakthibhyāṃ manthare kṣaumavāsinī
agrato mama gacchantī rājahaṃseva bhāsase

SYNONYMS

manthare: oh | ṃanthara! tvam: you | rājase: are splendid | rājahamsīva: like a royal swan | gacchantī: walking | agrataḥ: in front | mama: of me | āyatābhyām: with long | sakthibhyām: thighs | kśouma vāsinī: wearing silk saree. |

TRANSLATION

Oh, Manthara! you are splendid like a royal swan walking before me, with long thighs are wearing a silk sari.

VERSE 45

आसन्याः शम्बरे मायाः सहस्रमसुराधिपे

āsanyāḥ śambare māyāḥ sahasramasurādhipe

SYNONYMS

yāḥ: which | sahasram māyāḥ: thousand magic effects aasan = lying | śambare: in shambara | asurādhipe: the lord of demons | tāḥ sarvāḥ: all those | bhūyaḥ: and further | sahasraśaḥ: thousands of anyaashcha = others nivisTaaH = are lying | tvayi: in you. |

TRANSLATION

In addition to all those thousand magic effects lying in shambara, the lord of demons, another further thousands of magic effects are lying in you.

VERSE 46

तवेदं स्थगु यद्दीर्घं रथघोणमिवायतम्

tavedaṃ sthagu yaddīrghaṃ rathaghoṇamivāyatam

SYNONYMS

yat: which | tava: your | idam: this | dīrgham: long | sthagu: hunch | āyatam rathaghaṇamiva: looking like long apex of a chariot | atra: in it | vasanti: are dewelling | te: your | matayaḥ: thoughts | kṣatravidyāḥ ca: royal arts | mayāḥ ca: and magic effects. |

TRANSLATION

In your long hunch, which looks like an apex of a chariot, are dwelling your various thoughts, royal arts and magic effects.

VERSE 47

अत्रते प्रतिमोक्ष्यामि मालां कुब्जे हिरण्मयीम्

atrate pratimokṣyāmi mālāṃ kubje hiraṇmayīm

SYNONYMS

kubje: oh | ṃanthara! rāgahave: Rama | gate: goes to | vanam: forest | bharate ca: and Bharata | abhiśikte: gets anointed | pratimokśyāmi: adore | atra: this huch back | mālām: with garland | hiraṇmayīm: made of gold. |

TRANSLATION

Oh Manthara! When Rama goes to forest and Bharata gets kingdom, I shall adore this hunch back with a golden garland.

VERSE 48

जात्येन च सुवर्णेन सुविष्टप्तेन मन्थरे

jātyena ca suvarṇena suviṣṭaptena manthare

SYNONYMS

manthara: oh | ṃanthara! labdārthāca: after getting the benefit | pratītāca: and having delighted lapayishhyaami = I shall anoint | te sthagu: your hunch back | suvisṭaptena: with well refined | suvarṇena: gold | jātyena: of good class. |

TRANSLATION

Oh, Manthara! After accomplishing the benefit desired by me, I shall, with delight, get your hunch back anointed with well refined gold of good quality.

VERSE 49

मुखे च तिलकं चित्रं जातरूपमयं शुभम्

mukhe ca tilakaṃ citraṃ jātarūpamayaṃ śubham

SYNONYMS

kubje: oh | ṃanthara! kārayiṣyāmi: I shall get made | śubhāni: beautiful | ābharaṇāmica: ornaments | te mukhe: and for your face | śubham: auspicious | tilakam: dots | citram: of variety | jātarūpamayam: in pure gold. |

TRANSLATION

Oh, Manthara! I shall get beautiful ornaments made and for your forehead auspicious dots of variety done of pure gold.

VERSE 50

परिधाय शुभे वस्त्रे देवतेव चरिष्यसि

paridhāya śubhe vastre devateva cariṣyasi

SYNONYMS

51| cariṣyasi: you will be moving around | devateva: like an angel | paridhāya: wearing | subhe: beautiful | vastre: clothes | gamiṣyasi: you will get | mukhyām: important | gatim: position | dviṣajjane: amidst adversaries | garvayantī: with pride | mukhena: with face | apratimānanā: incomparably | āhvayamānena: competing with | candram: moon. |

TRANSLATION

You will be moving around like an angel, wearing beautiful clothes. You will achieve an important position in the eyes of your adversaries with pride and with your face, incomparably competing with moon.

VERSE 52

तवापि कुब्जायाः सर्वाभरणभूषिताः
पादौ परिचरिष्यन्ति यथैव त्वं सदा मम

tavāpi kubjāyāḥ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ
pādau paricariṣyanti yathaiva tvaṃ sadā mama

SYNONYMS

kubjāḥ: the hunch backed women | sarvābharanṇa bhuṣitāḥ: adorned with all ornaments | sadā: always | paricaraṣyanti: will do service | tava pādou api: at your feet also | yathaiva: as how | kibjāyāḥ: as hunch backed | tvam: you | mama: to me. |

TRANSLATION

The hunch backed women, adorned with all ornaments, will always do service, at your feet, as how as hunch-backed women, adorned with all ornaments, will always do service at your feet, as how as hunch-backed you are doing it to me.

VERSE 53

इति प्रशस्यमाना सा कैकेयीमिदमब्रवीत्
शयानां शयने शुभ्रे वेद्यामग्निशिखामिव

iti praśasyamānā sā kaikeyīmidamabravīt
śayānāṃ śayane śubhre vedyāmagniśikhāmiva

SYNONYMS

: that Manthara | iti: in this way | praśasyamānā: being praised | abravīt: spoke | idam: these words | kaikeyīm: to Kaikeyim shaanaam = who was lying | śubhre śayane: in a clean couch | agni sihāmiva: like a flame of five | vedyām: in a sacrificial altar. |

TRANSLATION

Manthara in this way being praised spoke these words to Kaikeyi, who was lying in a clean couch like a flame of fire upon the sacrificial altar.

VERSE 54

गतोदके सेतुबन्दो न कल्याणि विधीयते
उत्तिष्ठ कुरु कल्याणं राजानमसुदर्शय

gatodake setubando na kalyāṇi vidhīyate
uttiṣṭha kuru kalyāṇaṃ rājānamasudarśaya

SYNONYMS

kalyaṇi: Oh Kaikeyi | the auspicious one! gatodake: in a place where water has flown out | stubandhaḥ: coustructing a dam | navidhīyate: is not made | uttisṭa: rise | kuru: do | kalyāṇam: the auspicious act | anudarśaya: show your influence | rājānam: to king. |

TRANSLATION

Oh, Kaikeyi the auspicious one! When water has already flown out, there is no use constructing a dam. Now rise and do this purposeful action. Show your influence to the king.

VERSE 55

तथा प्रोत्साहिता देवी गता मन्थरया सह
क्रोधागारं विशालाक्षी सौभाग्यमदगर्विता

tathā protsāhitā devī gatā mantharayā saha
krodhāgāraṃ viśālākṣī saubhāgyamadagarvitā

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

By surrendering to the words of Manthara and having been thus encouraged by her, Kaikeyi who was of wide eyes, who was proud of her intoxicating beauty, who was a gifted woman and a queen, removed pearl necklace worth in lacs and other great valuable auspicious ornaments from her body, entered the chamber of wrath along with Manthara, lied on the floor there like a golden wire and spoke to Manthara as follows:

VERSE 58

इह वा मां मृतां कुब्जे णृपायावेदयिष्यसि
वनं तु राघवे प्राप्तेभरतः प्राप्स्यति क्षितिम्

iha vā māṃ mṛtāṃ kubje ṇṛpāyāvedayiṣyasi
vanaṃ tu rāghave prāptebharataḥ prāpsyati kṣitim

SYNONYMS

kubje: oh | ṃanthara! rāghave: Rama | prāpte: having reached | vanamtu: forest | bharataḥ: Bharata | prāpsyasi: shall get | kṣitim: the earth | : or ese | āvedayiṣyasi: inform | nṛpāya: king Dasaratha | mām: about me | mṛtām mām: as dead person | iha: here. |

TRANSLATION

"After Rama's going to the forest, Bharata shall get the kingdom. Or else, you inform the king that I died here itself".

VERSE 59

न सुवर्णेन मे ह्यर्थो न रत्नैर्न च भूषणैः
एष मे जीवितस्यान्तो रामो यद्यभिषिच्यते

na suvarṇena me hyartho na ratnairna ca bhūṣaṇaiḥ
eṣa me jīvitasyānto rāmo yadyabhiṣicyate

SYNONYMS

suvarṇena: gold | na arthaḥ: is of no use | me: to me | na: nor | ratnaiḥ: diamonds | bhūṣaṇaiḥ ca: ornaments | ramaḥ abhiṣicyate yadi: If Rama gets anointed for kingdom | eṣaḥ: that itself | antaḥ: is end | me jīvitasya: of my life. |

TRANSLATION

Neither gold nor diamonds nor ornaments are of any use to me. on which day Rama gets anointed for the kingdom, the same day it will be the end of my life.

VERSE 60

अथो पुनस्तां महिषीं महीक्षितो
वचोभिरत्यर्थ महापराक्रमैः
उवाच कुब्जा भरतस्य मातरं
हितं वचो राममुपेत्य चाहितम्

atho punastāṃ mahiṣīṃ mahīkṣito
vacobhiratyartha mahāparākramaiḥ
uvāca kubjā bharatasya mātaraṃ
hitaṃ vaco rāmamupetya cāhitam

SYNONYMS

atho: afterwards | kubjā: Manthara | punaḥ: again | uvāca: spoke | tām bharatasya mātaram: to that mother of Bharata | mahiṣīm: and wife | mahīkṣitaḥ: of king | vacobhiḥ: who was talking | atyarthamahāparakramaiḥ: very seriously | vacaḥ: the words | hitam: whcih are beneficial to her | ahitam: but not beneficial | rāmam upetya: in relation to Rama. |

TRANSLATION

Afterwards, that Manthara again spoke to the seriously talking mother of Bharata that is Kaikeyi the following words which were beneficial to her and not beneficial in relation to Rama.

VERSE 61

प्रपत्स्यते राज्यमिदं हि राघवो
यदि ध्रुवं त्वं स सुता च तप्स्यसे
अतो हि कल्याणि यतस्व तत्तथा
यथा सुतस्ते भरतो।अभिषेक्ष्यते

prapatsyate rājyamidaṃ hi rāghavo
yadi dhruvaṃ tvaṃ sa sutā ca tapsyase
ato hi kalyāṇi yatasva tattathā
yathā sutaste bharato|abhiṣekṣyate

SYNONYMS

rāghavaḥ prapatsyate yadi: If Rama gets | idam: this | rājyam: kingdom | tvam: you | sasutā: along with your son | tapsyase: get destroyed | dhruvam: it is certain | kalyāṇi: oh | the auspicious one! ataḥ: hence | yathā: in what way | te sutaḥ: your son | bharataḥ: Bharata | abhiṣekṣyate: will get anointed | yatasva: try | tathā: in that way | tat: that action. |

TRANSLATION

If Rama becomes king, you and your son will be destroyed. Oh, Kaikeyi of auspicious qualities! Hence you try for coronation of your son, Bharata

VERSE 62

तथातिविद्धा महिषि तु कुब्जया
समाहता वागिषुभिर्मुहुर्मुहुः
विधाय हस्तौ हृदये।अतिविस्मिता
श्शंस कुब्जां कुपिता पुनः पुनः

tathātividdhā mahiṣi tu kubjayā
samāhatā vāgiṣubhirmuhurmuhuḥ
vidhāya hastau hṛdaye|ativismitā
śśaṃsa kubjāṃ kupitā punaḥ punaḥ

SYNONYMS

samāhatā: having hit | tathā: thus | vāgiṣubhiḥ: by arrows of words | kubjayā: by the hunch backed Manthara | muhurmuhuḥ: again and again | mahiṣī: Kaikeyi | viddhā: felt sad | kupitā: angry | ativismitā: was very much surprised | vidhāya: keeping | hastou: hands | hṛdaye: on heart | śamśasa: praised | kubjām: the hunch backed one | punaḥ punaḥ: again and again. |

TRANSLATION

Having thus hit by arrows of words employed by Manthara again and again, Kaikeyi felt sad, was angry with the king, by keeping hands on her heart, was surprised with the cleverness of Manthara and praised her time and again.

VERSE 63

यमस्य वा मां विषयं गतामितो
निशाम्य कुब्जे प्रतिवेदयिष्यसि
वनं गते वा सुचिराय राघवे
समृद्धकामो भरतो भविष्यति

yamasya vā māṃ viṣayaṃ gatāmito
niśāmya kubje prativedayiṣyasi
vanaṃ gate vā sucirāya rāghave
samṛddhakāmo bharato bhaviṣyati

SYNONYMS

kubje: oh | prativedayiṣyasivā: either you have to inform | niśāmya: having seen | mām: me | gatām: going | yamasya viśayam: to the world of death | itaḥ: from here | bharataḥ bhaviṣyativā: or Bharata becomes | samṛddha kāmaḥ: fulfiller of desire | rāghave gate: when Rama left for | vanam: forest. |

TRANSLATION

If Rama does not go to forest from here, I do not long for any mattresses or garlands or sandal paste or eye-liner or drink or food or even the loaf here.

VERSE 64

अहं हि वै नास्तरणानि न स्रजो
न चन्दनं नाञ्जनपानभोजनम्
न किंचिदिच्छामि न चेह जीवितं
न चेदितो गच्छति राघवो वनम्

ahaṃ hi vai nāstaraṇāni na srajo
na candanaṃ nāñjanapānabhojanam
na kiṃcidicchāmi na ceha jīvitaṃ
na cedito gacchati rāghavo vanam

SYNONYMS

rāghavaḥ na gacchaticet: If Rama does not go to forest | itaḥ: from here | aham: I | na icchāmi: do not desire for | kincit: any | āstaraṇāmi: mattresses | na: nor | candanam: sandal paste | anjanam: eye-liner | pāna bhojanam: drink or food | jīvitamca: life even. |

TRANSLATION

If Rama does not go to forest from here, I do not long for any mattresses or garlands or sandal paste or eye-liner or drink or food or even the life here.

VERSE 65

अथैतदुक्त्वा वचनं सुदारुणं
न्धाय सर्वाभरणानि भामिनी
असंवृतामास्तरणेन मेदिनीं
तदाधिशिश्ये पतितेव किन्नरी

athaitaduktvā vacanaṃ sudāruṇaṃ
ndhāya sarvābharaṇāni bhāminī
asaṃvṛtāmāstaraṇena medinīṃ
tadādhiśiśye patiteva kinnarī

SYNONYMS

bhaminī: that Kaikeyi | uktvā: uttering | etat vacanam: these words | sudāruṇam: which are cruel | atta: afterwards | nidhāya: removing and keeping at one place | sarvābharaṇāni: all ornaments | tadā: then | adhiśiśye: lied down | medinīm: on floor | asamvritām: uncovered | āstaraṇena: by mattress | patitua kinnarī iva: like a fallen angel called kinnara. |

TRANSLATION

Kaikeyi, thus uttering cruel words, having removed all ornaments, lied on the floor without a mattress like a fallen angel.
