VERSE 1

एवम् उक्तअ꣡¸¥ तु भरतअ꣡¸¥ निअ꣡꣡£Äद्āधिपतिम् गुहम्
प्रत्युव्āच मह्ā प्र्āज्ñओ व्āक्यम् हेतु अर्थ सम्हितम्

evam uktaḥ tu bharataḥ niá́£Ädādhipatim guham
pratyuvāca mahā prājño vākyam hetu artha samhitam

SYNONYMS

bharataḥ: bharata | mahāpraj^ṇaḥ: the highly intelligent | evam: thus | uktaḥ: spoken | pratyuvāca: replied | vākyam: in words | hetvartha samhitam: composed of reason and meaning | guham: to Guha | niṣadādhipatim: the lord of Nishadas. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those words, the highly intelligent Bharata replied toGuha, the lord of Nishadas, in words that were full of reason and meaning.

VERSE 2

Å«र्जितअ꣡¸¥ खलु ते क्āमअ꣡¸¥ क꣡꣡›तअ꣡¸¥मम गुरोह् सखे
यो मे त्वम् Ä«द꣡꣡›Å›Ä«म् सेन्āम् एको अभ्यर्चितुम् इच्चसि

Å«rjitaḥ khalu te kāmaḥ ká́›taḥmama guroh sakhe
yo me tvam Ä«dá́›Å›Ä«m senām eko abhyarcitum iccasi

SYNONYMS

sakhe: O friend | mama: my | guroḥ: elder brother | yaḥ tvam = you: that very person who | ekaḥ: alone | icchasi: wants | abhyarcitum: to offer hospitality | īdṛśam: to such (a huge) | senām: army | te kāmaḥ: such a wish of yours | kṛtaḥ: formed | ūrjitaḥkhalu: is indeed mighty. |

TRANSLATION

?O, friend of my elder brother! Indeed, your desire to offerhospitality to my army of such a magnitude, is great.?

VERSE 3

इति उक्त्व्ā तु मह्ā तेज्ā गुहम्वचनम् उत्तमम्
अब्रव्Ä«द् भरतअ꣡¸¥ Å›र्Ä«म्āन् निअ꣡꣡£Äद अधिपतिम् पुनअ꣡¸¥

iti uktvā tu mahā tejā guhamvacanam uttamam
abravÄ«d bharataḥ Å›rÄ«mān niá́£Äda adhipatim punaḥ

TRANSLATION

Having spoken these excellent words to Guha; the greatlyillustrious Bharata, possessed of great splendor, said again to Guha the kingof Nishadas (as follows):

VERSE 4

कतरेअ꣡꣡‡अ गमिअ꣡꣡£य्āमि भरद्व्āज्āअÅ›रमम् गुह
गहनो अयम् भ꣡꣡›Å›अम् देÅ›ओ गअ꣡꣡…ग्ā अन्Å«पो दुरत्ययअ꣡¸¥

katareá́‡a gamiá́£yāmi bharadvājāaÅ›ramam guha
gahano ayam bhá́›Å›am deÅ›o gaá́…gā anÅ«po duratyayaḥ

SYNONYMS

guha: O Guha! | katareṇa: by which of the two routes | gamiṣyāmi: can I go | bharadvājāśramam: to the hermitage of Bharadvaja? Ayam = this | deśaḥ: region | gaṅgānūpaḥ: engulfed inwaters of Ganga river | bhṛśam gahanaḥ: isnot very much easy to cross. |

TRANSLATION

?O, Guha! By which of these two routes can I go to the hermitageof Bharadvaja? This region engulfed in waters of Ganga River is not very much easy to negotiate and is difficult to cross.?

VERSE 5

तस्य तत् वचनम् Å›रुत्व्ā र्āजपुत्रस्य ध्Ä«मतअ꣡¸¥
अब्रव्Ä«त् प्र्āन्जलिर् व्āक्यम् गुहो गहन गोचरअ꣡¸¥

tasya tat vacanam Å›rutvā rājaputrasya dhÄ«mataḥ
abravÄ«t prānjalir vākyam guho gahana gocaraḥ

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of the wise prince; Guha, who roams about inwoods, with joined palms answered as follows:

VERSE 6

द्āśāअ꣡¸¥ तु अनुगमिअ꣡꣡£यन्तिधन्विनअ꣡¸¥ सुसम्āहित्āअ꣡¸¥
अहम् च अनुगमिअ꣡꣡£य्āमि र्āज पुत्र मह्ā यÅ›अअ꣡¸¥

dāśāḥ tu anugamiá́£yantidhanvinaḥ susamāhitāḥ
aham ca anugamiá́£yāmi rāja putra mahā yaÅ›aḥ

SYNONYMS

mahāyaśaḥ: O highly illustrious | rājaputra: prince! | dāśāḥ: My ferrymen | dhanvinaḥ: wielding their bows | anugamiṣyanti: will follow | tvam: you | susamāhitāḥ: with great attention | aham: I too | tvā: you(in person). |

TRANSLATION

?O highly illustrious prince! My ferrymen wielding their bows,and very attentive, will certainly accompany you. I too will follow you (inperson).?

VERSE 7

कच्चिन् न दुअ꣡꣡£अ꣡꣡­अअ꣡¸¥ व्रजसि र्āमस्य्āक्लिअ꣡꣡£अ꣡꣡­अ कर्मअ꣡꣡‡अअ꣡¸¥
इयम् ते महत्Ä« सेन्ā Å›अन्क्āम् जनयति इव मे

kaccin na duá́£á́­aḥ vrajasi rāmasyākliá́£á́­a karmaá́‡aḥ
iyam te mahatī senā śankām janayati iva me

SYNONYMS

na vrajati kaccit: I hopeyou are not going | duṣṭaḥ: in offensive | rāmasya: of Rama | akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ: who is unwearied in action | iyam: this | mahati: great | te senā: of yours | janayātīva: is begetting | śaṅkām: a doubt | me: in me. |

TRANSLATION

?I hope you are not going to attack Rama, who is unwearied inaction. This great army of yours is begetting an apprehension in my mind.?

VERSE 8

तम् एवम् अभिभ्āअ꣡꣡£अन्तम्āक्āśऐव निर्मलअ꣡¸¥
भरतअ꣡¸¥ Å›लक꣡꣡£अ꣡꣡‡अय्ā व्āच्ā गुहम् वचनम् अब्रव्Ä«त्

tam evam abhibhāá́£antamākāśaiva nirmalaḥ
bharataḥ Å›laká́£á́‡ayā vācā guham vacanam abravÄ«t

SYNONYMS

bharataḥ: bharata | nirmalahiva: whose heart resembled a taintless | ākaśaḥ: sky | abravīt: spoke | vacanam: these words | ślakṣayā: in smooth | vācā: voice | tam guham: to that Guha | evam: who thus | abhibhāṣantam: talked(confessing his doubt). |

TRANSLATION

Bharata, whose heart resembled a taintless sky, spoke thefollowing words in smooth voice, to that Guha, who confessed his doubt asaforesaid.

VERSE 9

म्ā भ्Å«त् स क्āलो यत् कअ꣡꣡£अ꣡꣡­अम् नम्āम् Å›अन्कितुम् अर्हसि
र्āघवअ꣡¸¥ स हि मे भ्र्āत्ā ज्येअ꣡꣡£अ꣡꣡­हअ꣡¸¥ पित꣡꣡› समअ꣡¸¥ मम

mā bhÅ«t sa kālo yat kaá́£á́­am namām Å›ankitum arhasi
rāghavaḥ sa hi me bhrātā jyeá́£á́­haḥ pitá́› samaḥ mama

SYNONYMS

mā śūtam: let there not be | saḥ kālam: such a time | kaṣṭam: of wretchedness | yat: what so ever | nārhasi: you ought not | śaṅkitum: to suspect | mām: me | saḥ rāgh avaḥ: thatRama | me: my | jyeṣṭhaḥ: elder | bhrātā: brother | mataḥ hi: is indeedregarded | pitrusamaḥ: as my father. |

TRANSLATION

?Let not such an occasion of wretchedness come! You should neverhave suspected me. That Rama my elder brother is indeed regarded as my father.?

VERSE 10

तम् निवर्तयितुम् य्āमि क्āकुत्स्थम्वन व्āसिनम्
बुद्धिर् अन्य्ā न ते क्āर्य्ā गुह सत्यम् ब्रव्Ä«मि ते

tam nivartayitum yāmi kākutsthamvana vāsinam
buddhir anyā na te kāryā guha satyam bravīmi te

SYNONYMS

yāmi: I am proceeding | nivartaitum: to get back | tam: that | kākutthsam: Rama | vanavāsinam: who isliving in the forest | guha: O | ġuha! na anyā: No other | buddhiḥ: apprehension | kāryā: should be made | te: to you. | bravīm: I am telling | satyam: the truth |

TRANSLATION

?I am going to get back Rama who is now living in the forest. O,Guha! No other apprehension should be made by you. I am telling you the truth.?

VERSE 11

स तु सम्ह꣡꣡›अ꣡꣡£अ꣡꣡­अ वदनअ꣡¸¥ Å›रुत्व्āभरत भ्āअ꣡꣡£इतम्
पुनर् एव अब्रव्Ä«द् व्āक्यम् भरतम् प्रति हर꣡꣡£इतअ꣡¸¥

sa tu samhá́›á́£á́­a vadanaḥ Å›rutvābharata bhāá́£itam
punar eva abravÄ«d vākyam bharatam prati hará́£itaḥ

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | bharatabhāṣitam: the words of Bharata | saḥ tu: that Guha on his part | samhṛśṭa vadanah: with his face radiated | harṣitaḥ: with joy | abravīt: spoke | punareva: again | bharatam prati: to Bharata(as follows): |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Bharata, Guha on his part, with his faceradiated with joy spoke again to Bharata as follows:

VERSE 12

धन्यअ꣡¸¥ त्वम् न त्वय्ā तुल्यम्पÅ›य्āमि जगत्Ä« तले
अयत्न्āत् āगतम् र्āज्यम् यअ꣡¸¥ त्वम् त्यक्तुम् इह इच्चसि

dhanyaḥ tvam na tvayā tulyampaÅ›yāmi jagatÄ« tale
ayatnāt āgatam rājyam yaḥ tvam tyaktum iha iccasi

SYNONYMS

tvam: you | dhanyah: be blessed | na paśyāmi: I do not see | tvayā: your | tulyam: equal | jagatītale: on theearth | yaḥ: who | iccasi: wish | tyaktum: to renounce | rājyam: theempire | āgatam: you acquired | iha: now | ayatnāt: without effort. |

TRANSLATION

?You be blessed! I do not see your equal on this earth - you, whowish to renounce the empire you acquired now, even without effort.?

VERSE 13

śāśवत्Ä« खलु ते क्Ä«र्तिर्लोक्āन् अनुचरिअ꣡꣡£यति
यअ꣡¸¥ त्वम् क꣡꣡›च्च्र गतम् र्āमम् प्रत्य्āनयितुम् इच्चसि

śāśvatÄ« khalu te kÄ«rtirlokān anucariá́£yati
yaḥ tvam ká́›ccra gatam rāmam pratyānayitum iccasi

SYNONYMS

te: you | kīritiḥ: fame | khalu: assuredly | anucariṣyati: will traverse | śāśvatī: permanently | lokam: in all provinces. YaH tvam = as you the very person who | icchasi: wishes | pratyānayitum: to bring back | rāmam: Rama | kṛcchagatam: from hisfearful plight. |

TRANSLATION

?Assuredly your fame will traverse permanently in all provinces,as you are the very person who wishes to bring back Rama from his terribleplight.?

VERSE 14

एवम् सम्भ्āअ꣡꣡£अम्āअ꣡꣡‡अस्य गुहस्यभरतम् तद्ā
बभौ नअ꣡꣡£अ꣡꣡­अ प्रभअ꣡¸¥ स्Å«र्यो रजन्Ä« च अभ्यवर्तत

evam sambhāá́£amāá́‡asya guhasyabharatam tadā
babhau naá́£á́­a prabhaḥ sÅ«ryo rajanÄ« ca abhyavartata

SYNONYMS

guhasya: Guha(while) | evam: was thus | sambhāṣaṇasya: talking | bharatam: to Bharata | sūryāḥ: the sun | tadā: then | babhou: glittered | naṣṭaprabhaḥ: with less light | rajanīca: and the night | abhyavartata: returned. |

TRANSLATION

While Guha was talking thus to Bharata, the sun diffused lesslight and the night fell.

VERSE 15

सम्निवेÅ›य स त्āम् सेन्āम् गुहेनपरितोअ꣡꣡£इतअ꣡¸¥
Å›अत्रुघ्नेन सह Å›र्Ä«म्āन् Å›अयनम् पुनर् āगमत्

samniveÅ›ya sa tām senām guhenaparitoá́£itaḥ
śatrughnena saha śrīmān śayanam punar āgamat

SYNONYMS

śrīmān: the illustrious | saḥ: Bharata | sanniveśya tām senām: lodging that army in camps | paritoṣitaḥ: and felt delighted | guhena: by Guha?s service | samupāgamat: returned to his camp | śayanam: and took rest | śatrughnena saha: withShatrughna. |

TRANSLATION

The illustrious Bharata, lodging that army in camps, feltdelighted by Guha?s hospitality, returned to his camp and took rest along withShatrughna.

VERSE 16

र्āम चिन्त्āमयअ꣡¸¥ Å›ओको भरतस्यमह्āत्मनअ꣡¸¥
उपस्थितअ꣡¸¥ हि अनर्हस्य धर्म प्रेक꣡꣡£अस्य त्āद꣡꣡›Å›अअ꣡¸¥

rāma cintāmayaḥ Å›oko bharatasyamahātmanaḥ
upasthitaḥ hi anarhasya dharma preká́£asya tādá́›Å›aḥ

SYNONYMS

bharatasya: to Bharata | mahātmanaḥ: the high soled | dharmaprekṣasya: whose only aim is to fulfillhis duty | anarhasya: and who is undeserving of sorrow | tādṛśaḥ hi: indeedfelt | śokaḥ: grief | rāma cintāmayah: born of anguish for Rama. |

TRANSLATION

The high soled Bharata, whose only aim is to fulfill his duty andwho is undeserving of sorrow, indeed felt grief, born of anguish for Rama.

VERSE 17

अन्तर् द्āहेन दहनअ꣡¸¥ सम्त्āपयतिर्āघवम्
वन द्āह अभिसम्तप्तम् ग्Å«अ꣡¸हो अग्निर् इव प्āदपम्

antar dāhena dahanaḥ samtāpayatirāghavam
vana dāha abhisamtaptam gūḍho agnir iva pādapam

SYNONYMS

agniriva: as a fire | gūḍhah: hidden | pādapam: in a hollow tree | vana dāhābhi samtaptaḥ: while a forest onfire is burnt up | (so did)rāghavam: Bharata?s | dahanaḥ: fire | santāpayati: ofanguish | antardāhena: burn within his heart. |

TRANSLATION

As a fire is hidden in a hollow tree while a forest is on fire, sodid Bharata?s fire of anguish burn with in his heart.

VERSE 18

प्रस्रुतअ꣡¸¥ सर्व ग्āत्रेभ्यअ꣡¸¥ स्वेदअ꣡¸¥Å›ओक अग्नि सम्भवअ꣡¸¥
यथ्ā स्Å«र्य अअ꣡꣡ƒÅ›उ सम्तप्तअ꣡¸¥ हिमव्āन् प्रस्रुतअ꣡¸¥ हिमम्

prasrutaḥ sarva gātrebhyaḥ svedaḥśoka agni sambhavaḥ
yathā sÅ«rya aá́ƒÅ›u samtaptaḥ himavān prasrutaḥ himam

SYNONYMS

svedam: perspiration | śokāgnisambhavam: born of fieriness of grief | prasṛtaḥ: melts and flows | sarvagātrebhyaḥ: from all his limbs | yathā: as | himam: the snow | sūryāmśu samtaptaḥ: heated by solar rays | himavān: fromHimavat mountain. |

TRANSLATION

Perspiration born of fieriness of grief poured off from all hislimbs, as the snow heated by solar rays melts and flows from Himavat mountain.

VERSE 19

ध्य्āन निर्दर Å›ऐलेनविनिह्Å›वसित ध्āतुन्ā
दैन्य प्āदप सम्घेन Å›ओक āय्āस अधिÅ›अ꣡꣡›न्गिअ꣡꣡‡Ä

dhyāna nirdara śailenavinihśvasita dhātunā
dainya pādapa samghena Å›oka āyāsa adhiÅ›á́›ngiá́‡Ä

SYNONYMS

-20| kaikeyīsutaḥ: Bharata the son of Kaikeyi | ākrāntaḥ: was pressed | mahata duḥkha sailena: by the weight of that colossal mountain of agony | dhyāna nirdhara śailena: consisting of rocky caverns in the shape of settled contemplations on Rama | viniḥśvasitadhātunā: minerals in the shape of groans and sighs | dainyapādapa samghena: acluster of trees in the shape of depressive thoughts | śokāyāsādhiśṛṅgiṇā: summits in the form of sufferings and fatigue | pramohānanta sattvena: countless wild beasts in the shape of swoons | samtāpouṣadhi veṇunā: herbsand bamboos in the form of his exertions. |

TRANSLATION

Bharata, the son of Kaikeyi was pressed by the weight of thatcolossal mountain of agony consisting of rocky caverns in the shape of settledcontemplations on Rama, minerals in the shape of groans and sighs, a cluster oftrees in the shape of depressive thoughts, summits in the form of sufferingsand fatigue, countless wild beasts in the shape of swoons, herbs and bamboos inthe form of his exertions.

VERSE 21

विनिśśवसन्वैभ꣡꣡›Å›अदुर्मन्āस्ततअ꣡¸¥
प्रम्Å«अ꣡¸हसम्ज्ñअअ꣡¸¥ परम्āपदम् गतअ꣡¸¥
Å›अमम् न लेभे ह꣡꣡›दयज्वर्āर्दितो
नरर꣡꣡£अभो य्Å«थहतो यथर꣡꣡£अभअ꣡¸¥

viniśśvasanvaibhá́›Å›adurmanāstataḥ
pramūḍhasamjñaḥ paramāpadam gataḥ
Å›amam na lebhe há́›dayajvarārdito
narará́£abho yÅ«thahato yathará́£abhaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | nararṣabhah: Bharata the excellent among men | viniṣvasan: sighing | bhṛśaduramanā: very much in melancholy | pramūḍha samjṅaḥ: his mind utterlyconfused in consequence. | gataḥ: having obtained | parama āpadam: an exrtremedistress | hṛdaya jvarārditaḥ: afflicted with burning fever in his breast | ṛṣabhaḥ yathā: like a bull | yūtha hataḥ: strayed from its herd | lekhe: found | na śamam: no peace. |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, Bharata the excellent among men sighing much inmelancholy, his mind utterly confused in consequence, having obtained anextreme distress, afflicted as he was with burning fever in his breast and likea bull strayed from its herd, found no peace.

VERSE 22

इत्य्āर꣡꣡£ए Å›र्Ä«मद्र्āम्āयअ꣡꣡‡एāदिक्āव्ये अयोध्य्āक्āम꣡¸ए पच्āśīतितमअ꣡¸¥ सर्गअ꣡¸¥

ityārá́£e Å›rÄ«madrāmāyaá́‡eādikāvye ayodhyākāmḍe pacāśītitamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

bharataḥ: bharata | mahānubhāvaḥ: the noble minded | sajanaḥ: with his escort | samāgataḥ: met | guhesārtham: Guha too | samāhitaḥ: in a composed mind | tadā: then | guhah: Guha | sudurmanāḥ: in very low spirits | āśvāsayaṭ: reassured | tam bharatam: that Bharata | punaḥ: again | agrajam prati: regarding his elder brother. |

TRANSLATION

The noble soled Bharata, with his escort, met Guha too in acomposed mind. Then Guha slowly reassured Bharata again as regards his elderbrother.
