Ayodhya Kanda - Book Of Ayodhya

VERSE 1

स प्रान् मुखो राज गृहात् अभिनिर्याय वीर्यवान्
ततः सुदामाम् द्युतिमान् सम्तीर्वावेक्ष्य ताम् नदीम्

sa prān mukho rāja gṛhāt abhiniryāya vīryavān
tataḥ sudāmām dyutimān samtīrvāvekṣya tām nadīm

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

That brilliant and glorious Bharata, who was a rejoice to Ikshvaku dynasty marching in easterly direction from the city of Rajagriha, thereafter observing and crossing Sudama* river as well as the wide Hladini river, whose stream flowed towards eastern direction.

PURPORT

The route Bharata drove was a different one from the route the messengers had taken from Ayodhya to Rajagriha. This is a longer route and it took a complete week for Bharata to reach Ayodhya
VERSE 3

एल धाने नदीम् तीर्त्वा प्राप्य च अपर पर्पटान्
शिलाम् आकुर्वतीम् तीर्त्वाआग्नेयम् शल्य कर्तनम्

ela dhāne nadīm tīrtvā prāpya ca apara parpaṭān
śilām ākurvatīm tīrtvāāgneyam śalya kartanam

saḥ: that Bharata | satyasandhaḥ: who kept up his promise | śuciḥ: the pure man in heart | śrīmān: the illustrious man | tīrtvā: crossing | nadīm: shatadru river | elādhāne: at Eladhana village | prāpyāca: reaching | aparaparpatān: the region of aparaparpata | ākurvatīm: Akurvati | śilām: a rocky hill | prekṣyamāṇah: seeing | āġ^yeyam: the village of Agneyam | śalyakartanam: Salyakartana village | śilāvahām: and silavaha river | atyayāt: and crossed | mahāśailān: huge mountains | caitrathavanam prati: towards the woods of chaitraratha. |

TRANSLATION

The pure and illustrious Bharata, who kept up his promise, crossing shatradru river at Eladhana village, reaching the region of Apara parpata, crossing a rocky hill called akurvati, seeing the villages of Agneyam and salyakartana as well as Silavaha river, crossed huge mountains and traveled towards the woods of Chitraratha.

VERSE 5

सरस्वतीम् च गङ्गाम् च उग्मेन प्रतिपद्य च
उत्तरम् वीरमत्स्यानाम् भारुण्डम् प्राविशद्वनम्

sarasvatīm ca gaṅgām ca ugmena pratipadya ca
uttaram vīramatsyānām bhāruṇḍam prāviśadvanam

SYNONYMS

v|vṃ: pratipadya = arriving at | yugmena: the confluence of | sarasvatīmca: saraswati river | gaṇgāca: and Ganga river | praviśat: entered | bhāruṅḍamvanam: the woods of Bharunda | uttaram: the north | vīramatsyānām: of Viramatsya region. |

TRANSLATION

Arriving at the confluence of Saraswati and Ganga rivers, Bharata entered the woods of Bharmuda, the north of Viramatsaya region.

VERSE 6

वेगिनीम् च कुलिन्ग आख्याम् ह्रादिनीम् पर्वत आवृताम्
यमुनाम् प्राप्य सम्तीर्णो बलम् आश्वासयत् तदा

veginīm ca kulinga ākhyām hrādinīm parvata āvṛtām
yamunām prāpya samtīrṇo balam āśvāsayat tadā

SYNONYMS

prāpya: reaching | samtīrṇa: and crossing | kuliṇgākhyām: a river named Kulinga | veginīm: which is swift | parvatāvṛtām: surrounded by mountains | hlādini: and requesting | yamūnām: as well as Yamuna river | badam: the army | āśvāsayat: was made to rest. |

TRANSLATION

Reaching and crossing a refreshing river named Kulinga, which is swift and surrounded by mountains as well as Yamuna river, the army was then made to rest there.

VERSE 7

शीतीकृत्य तु गात्राणि क्लान्तान् आश्वास्य वाजिनः
तत्र स्नात्वा च पीत्वा च प्रायात् आदाय च उदकम्

śītīkṛtya tu gātrāṇi klāntān āśvāsya vājinaḥ
tatra snātvā ca pītvā ca prāyāt ādāya ca udakam

SYNONYMS

śītīkṛya: making cool | gātrāṇi: the limbs | klāntān: of the tired | vājinaḥ: horses | āśvāsya: and cheering them up | tatra: there | snātvā: taking bath(himself) | pītvāca: drinking | udakam: water | ādāya: and carrying it (future use) praayaata = (Bharata) proceeded further. |

TRANSLATION

Making cool the limbs of the tired horses by bathing there and cheering up them, nay, taking a bath himself, drinking some water and carrying it for future use, Bharata proceeded further.

VERSE 8

राज पुत्रः महा अरण्यम् अनभीक्ष्ण उपसेवितम्
भद्रः भद्रेण यानेन मारुतः खम् इव अत्ययात्

rāja putraḥ mahā araṇyam anabhīkṣṇa upasevitam
bhadraḥ bhadreṇa yānena mārutaḥ kham iva atyayāt

SYNONYMS

bhadraḥ: the blessed | rājaputraḥ: bharata | atyayāt: traversed | mahāraṇyam: the huge forest | anabhīkṣṇopasevitam: which was rarely frequented | bhadreṇa: by his excellent | yānena: chariot | khamiva: as through the atmosphere | mārutaḥ: the wind. |

TRANSLATION

The blessed prince Bharata traversed that rarely frequented huge forest by his excellent chariot as the wind glides through an atmosphere.

VERSE 9

भागीरथीम् दुष्प्रतरामंशुधाने महानदीम्
उपायाद्राघवस्तूर्णम् प्राग्वटे विश्रुते पुरे

bhāgīrathīm duṣpratarāmaṃśudhāne mahānadīm
upāyādrāghavastūrṇam prāgvaṭe viśrute pure

SYNONYMS

rāghavaḥ: Bharata | tūrṇam: quickly | upāyat: reached | mahānadīm: the great river | bhagīrathīm: Bhagirathi | duṣpratarām: which is difficult to be crossed | pure: at the city | prāgvaṭe: of pragvata | amśudhāne: in the region of Amsudhana. |

TRANSLATION

Bharata soon reached the great river, Bharathi, which is difficult to be crossed, at the city of pragvata in the region of Amsudhana.

VERSE 10

स गङ्गाम् प्राग्वटे तीर्त्वे समायात्कुटिकोष्ठिकाम्
सबलस्ताम् स तीर्त्वाथ समायाद्धर्मवर्धनम्

sa gaṅgām prāgvaṭe tīrtve samāyātkuṭikoṣṭhikām
sabalastām sa tīrtvātha samāyāddharmavardhanam

SYNONYMS

tīrvā: traversed | gaṇgām: the river Ganga | prāgvaṭe: at the city of Pragvata | sah: he | samāyāyāt: reached | kuṭikoṣṭhikām: the river Kutikoshthka | tām: it | sabalaḥ: along with his army | atha: and then | samāyāt: and arrived at | dharmavardhanam: the river of Dharmavardhana. |

TRANSLATION

Crossing the River Ganga at the city of Pragvata, he reached the river Kulikoshthika, traversed it along with his army and then arrived at the region of Dharmavardhana.

VERSE 11

तोरणम् दक्षिण अर्धेन जम्बू प्रस्थम् उपागमत्
वरूथम् च ययौ रम्यम् ग्रामम् दशरथ आत्मजः

toraṇam dakṣiṇa ardhena jambū prastham upāgamat
varūtham ca yayau ramyam grāmam daśaratha ātmajaḥ

SYNONYMS

daśarathātmajaḥ: Bharata | upāgamāt: reached | jambūprastham: Jambuprastha village | dakṣiṇārdhena: which is the southern part | toraṇam: of torana region | (and from there)yayou: got | ramyam: a beautiful | gramamca: village too | varūtham: called Varutha. |

TRANSLATION

Bharata reached Jambuprasta village, which is located at the southern part of Torana region and from there he arrived at a beautiful village too, named Varutha.

VERSE 12

तत्र रम्ये वने वासम् कृत्वा असौ प्रान् मुखो ययौ
उद्यानम् उज्जिहानायाः प्रियका यत्र पादपाः

tatra ramye vane vāsam kṛtvā asau prān mukho yayau
udyānam ujjihānāyāḥ priyakā yatra pādapāḥ

SYNONYMS

kṟṛtvā: making | vāsam: a camp | ramie: in that beautiful | vane: forest | tatra: there | asou: Bharata | prāṇmukhah: turned towards the east | yayou: and reached | udyānam: a garden | ujjihānāyāḥ: in the city of Ujjihana | yatra: in which | there are) priyakāḥ pādapāḥ: a number of Kadamba trees. |

TRANSLATION

Making a camp in thatbeautiful forest there, Bharata traveled towards the east and reached a garden in the city of Ujjihana, in which there are a number of Kadamba trees.

VERSE 13

सालांस् तु प्रियकान् प्राप्य शीघ्रान् आस्थाय वाजिनः
अनुज्ञाप्य अथ भरतः वाहिनीम् त्वरितः ययौ

sālāṃs tu priyakān prāpya śīghrān āsthāya vājinaḥ
anujñāpya atha bharataḥ vāhinīm tvaritaḥ yayau

SYNONYMS

prāpya: having reached | sālān: sala trees | priyākān: kadamba trees | bharatah: Bharata | āsthayā: yoked | śīghram: swifter | vājenah: horses | anuġ^yāpye: allowed | vāhinīm: his army | atha: to come after him | yayon: and went ahead | tvaritaḥ: quickly. |

TRANSLATION

Having reached Sala and Kadamba trees, Bharata yoked swifter horses to his chariot, allowed his army to come after him and quickly went ahead.

VERSE 14

वासम् कृत्वा सर्व तीर्थे तीर्त्वा च उत्तानकाम् नदीम्
अन्या नदीः च विविधाः पार्वतीयैअः तुरम् गमैः

vāsam kṛtvā sarva tīrthe tīrtvā ca uttānakām nadīm
anyā nadīḥ ca vividhāḥ pārvatīyaiaḥ turam gamaiḥ

SYNONYMS

15| vāsam kṛtvā: having halted | sarvatīrthe: in sarvatirtha | tīrtvā: and having crossed | uttānikām nadīm: uttamika river | vividhāḥ: and various | anyāḥ: other | nadīśca: rivers | pārvatīyaiḥ turaṇgaiḥ: by mountain-ponies | āsādya: and reaching | hastipṛṣṭākam: the village of Hastiprataka | atyavartata: crossed | kṭikām: river kutika | tarāra: andtraversed | kapīvartīm: the river kapivati | lohityu: at Lohitya village. |

TRANSLATION

Having halted min Sarvatirtha village and having crossed Uttamika river and various other rivers by mountain -ponies and reaching Hast prasthaka village, Bharata crossed Kutika river and traversed kapivati river at Lohitya village.

VERSE 16

एक साले स्थाणुमतीम् विनते गोमतीम् नदीम्
कलिन्ग नगरे च अपि प्राप्य साल वनम् तदा

eka sāle sthāṇumatīm vinate gomatīm nadīm
kalinga nagare ca api prāpya sāla vanam tadā

SYNONYMS

bharataḥ: Bharata | (after crossing) sthāṇumatīm: Sthanumati river | ekasāla: at Ekasala village | gomatīm nadīm: and Gomati river | vinate: at Vinata village | suprariśrānta vāhanah: as the horses were verymuch tired | prāpya: reached | tadā: then | sālavanam: a grove of Sala trees | kaliṇganagarachāpi: at even kalinga city also | āgacchat: and proceeded | kṣipram: quickly. |

TRANSLATION

Bharata, after crossing Sthanumati river at Ekasala village and Gomati river at Vinata village, took rest at a grove of Sala trees at Kalinga city as the horses were very much tired and then proceeded quickly.

VERSE 17

वनम् च समतीत्य आशु शर्वर्याम् अरुण उदये

vanam ca samatītya āśu śarvaryām aruṇa udaye

SYNONYMS

samātītya: driving through | vanamca: the grove | āstu: quickly | śaravaryām: in the night | aruṇodaya: at dawn | sandarśaha: saw | ayodhyām: the city of Ayodhya | nirnītām: which was built | manunāraġ^yā: by the king Manu. |

TRANSLATION

Driving through grove quickly in the night, Bharata at the dawn saw the city of Ayodhya, which was earlier built by King Manu.

VERSE 18

ताम् पुरीम् पुरुष व्याघ्रः सप्त रात्र उषिटः पथि

tām purīm puruṣa vyāghraḥ sapta rātra uṣiṭaḥ pathi

SYNONYMS

dṝṣṭvā: seeing | tām: that | ayodhyām purīm: city of Ayodhya | agrataḥ: in front | saptarātroṣitaḥ: after spending seven nights | pathi: on his way | puruṣvyāghraḥ: that tiger among men | abravīt: spoke | vākyam: these words | sārathim: to the charioteer. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing the city of Ayodhya in front, after spending seven nights on his way, Bharata the tiger among men, spoke the following words to his charioteer:

VERSE 19

एषा न अतिप्रतीता मे पुण्य उद्याना यशस्विनी

eṣā na atipratītā me puṇya udyānā yaśasvinī

SYNONYMS

20| sārathe: O | cariotīr! Eṣā: this | yaśasvinī: famous | ayodhyā: city of Ayodhya | dṛśyate-: appears | me: to me | nātipratītā: not clearly distinguishable.duuraat = from this distance. PaaNDum rittikaa = as a heap of white clay.puNyodyaanaa = beautiful gardens | ākīrṇā: a place filled with yajvabhiH = performers of sacrifies | guṇasampanne: endowed with good qualities. Veda paaragaiH = Brahmins | bhūyiṣṭham: most abundant | ṛddhaiḥ: in riches | rājarṣiparipālitā: and ruled by a royal sage. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Charioteer! The famous city of Ayodhya comes into view vaguely to me from a distance, as a heap of white clay. It has beautiful gardens. It is filled with performers of sacrifices and with people endowed with good qualities as well as well versed in the Vedas and with Brahmins inmost abundant reaches , It is being ruled by a royal sage."

VERSE 21

अयोध्यायाम् पुरा शब्दः श्रूयते तुमुलो महान्

ayodhyāyām purā śabdaḥ śrūyate tumulo mahān

SYNONYMS

purā: Earlier | mahān: abig | tumulaḥ: clattering | śabdaḥ: noise | nara nārīnām: of men and women | śrūyate: used to be heard | samantāt: all round | ayodhyyām: in Ayodhya | adya: Now | aham: I | na śṛṇomyaham: am not hearing | tam: that noice. |

TRANSLATION

Earlier , a big clattering voice of men and women used to be heard all round in Ayodhya. Now, I am not hearing that voice."

VERSE 22

उद्यानानि हि साय अह्ने क्रीडित्वा उपरतैः नरैः

udyānāni hi sāya ahne krīḍitvā uparataiḥ naraiḥ

SYNONYMS

udyānāni: the parks | prakāśantehi: which used to beam | naraiḥ: forth | samantāt: on all sides | sāyāhne: in the evening | mama: to me | anyathā: otherwise. |

TRANSLATION

"The parks which used to beam with men streaming forth on all sides, having given up sporting in the morning after entering them in thee evening having spent the whole night in sport, now appear to me otherwise"

VERSE 23

तानि अद्य अनुरुदन्ति इव परित्यक्तानि कामिभिः

tāni adya anurudanti iva parityaktāni kāmibhiḥ

SYNONYMS

tāmi: these parks | parityaktāni: deserted | kāmibhiḥ: by the lovers | adya: now | anuruddantīva: turn out to be miserable | sārathe: o | cariotīr!me: to me | purī: the city | pratibhāti: appears | araṇyabhūteva: to have changed into a forest. |

TRANSLATION

"These parks deserted by the lovers now turn out to be dejected . O, charioteer! To me, the city appears to have changed into a forest."

VERSE 24

न हि अत्र यानैः दृश्यन्ते न गजैः न च वाजिभिः

na hi atra yānaiḥ dṛśyante na gajaiḥ na ca vājibhiḥ

SYNONYMS

atra: here | yathāpūrvam: as before | naramukhyāḥ: important persons | nadṛśyante hi: indeed are not seen | niryāntovā: going into the city | abhiyāntovā: on coming out of it | yānaiḥ: in carriages | na: nay | rājithiḥ: on horses too. |

TRANSLATION

"Here, as before, important persons indeed are not seen going into the city or coming out it in carriages or on horses or on elephants."

VERSE 25

उद्यानानि पुरा भान्ति मत्तप्रमुदितानि च

udyānāni purā bhānti mattapramuditāni ca

SYNONYMS

purā: earlier | ndyānāni: parks | śānti: used to be conspicuously | matta pranuditānica: ezaited | atyantaguṇavantica: and were most excellent | ratisamyogeṣu: for love contacts | janānām: of men. |

TRANSLATION

"Earlier parks used to be conspicuously excited with joy and gaiety and were most congenial for love contacts of men."

VERSE 26

तान्येतान्यद्य वश्यामि निरानन्दानि सर्वशः

tānyetānyadya vaśyāmi nirānandāni sarvaśaḥ

SYNONYMS

paśyāmi: Iam seeing | tānyena: those same parks | adya: today | nirānandāmi: with lack of enjoyment | sarvaśaḥ: on all sides | drumaiḥ: with trees | srastaparṇaih: having their leaves fallen | anupatham: along the road | vikrośadbhiriva: looking a picture of dismay. |

TRANSLATION

"I am seeing the same parks., today with lack of enjoyments on all sides and with trees having their leaves fallen along the road, looking like picture of dismay."

VERSE 27

नाद्यापि श्रूयते शब्दो मत्तानाम् मृगपक्षिणाम्

nādyāpi śrūyate śabdo mattānām mṛgapakṣiṇām

SYNONYMS

adyāpi: even not | śabdaḥ: sounds | mattānām: mR^igapakshhinaam = of animals and birds in rut | samraktām: which an charming madhuraam = with sweet | vānīm: tone | vyāhratam: uttering | bahu: with much | kalam: melody | naśrūyate: are not being heard. |

TRANSLATION

"Even now at dawn, charming sounds with sweet and much melodious tone of animals and birds intoxicated with happiness are not being heard."

VERSE 28

चन्दनागुरुसम्पृक्तो धूपसम्मूर्चितो।अतुलः

candanāgurusampṛkto dhūpasammūrcito|atulaḥ

SYNONYMS

kimnu: why does | yathāpuram: as before | bhrīmān: pure and auspicious | candanāgarusamyuktaḥ: laden with aloes and sandal wood | pavanaḥ: breeze | dhumpasammūrcitaḥ: intensified with the pure of burnt incense | na pravāci: not blow | adya: today? |

TRANSLATION

"Why does, as before, pure and auspicious breeze laden with aloes and sandal wood intensified with the fume of burnt incense,not blow today.?"

VERSE 29

भेरीमृदङ्गवीणानाम् कोणसम्घट्टितः पुनः

bherīmṛdaṅgavīṇānām koṇasamghaṭṭitaḥ punaḥ

SYNONYMS

kim: why | adya: today | śabdaḥ: have the sounds | bherīmṛdaṇga vīṇānām: of kettle drums clay tomtoms and vinas | koṇasamghaṭṭitaḥ: played upon with drum sticks or plums or fingers | virath: stopped | purā: which formerly | sadā adīnagatiḥ: never ceased | punaḥ: at any time. |

TRANSLATION

"Why today have the sounds of kettledrums, clay tomtoms and Vinas played upon with drum-sticks or palms or fingers stopped which formerly never ceased at any time."

VERSE 30

अनिष्टानि च पापानि पश्यामि विविधानि च

aniṣṭāni ca pāpāni paśyāmi vividhāni ca

SYNONYMS

paśyāmi: I perceive | vividhāni: various kinds | nimittāni: of omens | aniṣṭāni: which are undesirable | pāpāni: sinful | amanujñāni: and silly | tena: by this | me: my | manaḥ: mind | sīdati: is dejected. |

TRANSLATION

"I perceive various kinds of evil sinful and silly omens and by this, my mind is dejected."

VERSE 31

सर्वथा कुशलम् सूत दुर्लभम् मम बन्धुषु

sarvathā kuśalam sūta durlabham mama bandhuṣu

SYNONYMS

sūta: O | cariotīr! ḍurlabham: it is not possible | sarvattā: that all | kuśalam: should be well | mama bandhuṣu: with my kinsfolk | tathāhi: as indeed | asati: even without | sammohe: any cause for a grievance | me: my | hṝdayam: spirit | sīdatīva: is cast down. |

TRANSLATION

"O, charioteer! It is not possible that all sounds be well with my kinsfolk, as indeed, even without anycause for a grievance, my spirit is cast down"

VERSE 32

विषण्णः शान्तहृदयस्त्रस्तः सुलुलितेन्द्रियः

viṣaṇṇaḥ śāntahṛdayastrastaḥ sululitendriyaḥ

SYNONYMS

viṣaṇṇaḥ: despondent | śrānta: hR^idayaH = distressed in mind | trastaḥ: frightened | sululitendriyaḥ: and extremely | bharatāḥ: Bharata | aśu: quickly | praviveśa: entered | purīm: the city | ikṣvākupālitam: ruled by the descendents of Ikshvaku. |

TRANSLATION

Despondent, distressed in mind, frightened and extremely entered the city, which was ruled by the descendents of Ikshvaku.

VERSE 33

द्वारेण वैजयन्तेन प्राविशत् श्रान्त वाहनः

dvāreṇa vaijayantena prāviśat śrānta vāhanaḥ

SYNONYMS

śānta vāhanaḥ: Bharata | prāviśat: entered | dvāreṇa: through the gate | vaijayentena: called Vaijayanta | uktaḥ: greeted | vijayam: with slogans of victory | utthāya: by the standing | dvāḥsthaiḥ: gate keepers | yayon: he went | sahitaḥ: along with | taiḥ: them. |

TRANSLATION

Bharata, with his tiered horses entered the city through Vaijayanta gate. Greeted with slogans of victory by the standing gatekeepers, he went inside, along with others.

VERSE 34

स तु अनेक अग्र हृदयो द्वाह्स्थम् प्रत्यर्च्य तम् जनम्

sa tu aneka agra hṛdayo dvāhstham pratyarcya tam janam

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that | rāghavathtu: Bharata | anekāgra: hR^idayaH = with distracted mind | pratyarcya: responded to the salutations | tam: of those | janam: men | dvāstham: at the gate | tatra: there | sūtam: who wasbeloved | aśvapatih: to Asvapati (as follows) |

TRANSLATION

Bharata, with a distracted mind, responded to the salutations of those porters at the gate and those porters at the gate and spoke to the charioteer who was beloved to Asvapati as follows:

VERSE 35

किमहम् त्वरयानीतः कारणेन विनानघ

kimaham tvarayānītaḥ kāraṇena vinānagha

SYNONYMS

anagha: O | faultless cariotīr! k͟him: why was | aham: I | anītaḥ: brought | tvarayā: so quickly | kāraṇena vinā: without any reason? HR^idayam = my mind | aśubhāśaṇki: is apprehending some evil | me: My | śīlamca: energy is also | patatīva: lost. |

TRANSLATION

"O, the faultless charioteer! Why was I brought so quickly without any reason? My mind is apprehending some evil. I lost my all energy."

VERSE 36

श्रुता नो यादृशाः पूर्वम् नृपतीनाम् विनाशने

śrutā no yādṛśāḥ pūrvam nṛpatīnām vināśane

SYNONYMS

sārathe: O | cariotīr! ẏādṛśāḥ: were heard | naḥ: by us | pūrvam: formerly | vināśana: regarding ruin | nṛpatīnām: of kings | aham: I | paśyāmi: am seeing | iha: here | sarvām: all | tām: those | ākārāan: signs. |

TRANSLATION

"Whatever things were heard by us formerly in the same case of ruin of kings, I am seeing here all those signs."

VERSE 37

सम्मार्जनविहीनानि परुषाण्युपलक्षये

sammārjanavihīnāni paruṣāṇyupalakṣaye

SYNONYMS

39| aham: I | upalakṣaye: am seeing | kuṭumibhavanāni: the family horses | paruṣāṇi: for which the dirt | sammārjana vihīnāni: was upswept | asamyata kavāṭāni: with doors wide open | śrīhināni: bereft of splendor | sarvaśaḥ: on all sides | balikarmavihīnāni: no offerings are being made | dhūpasammodanevaca: no incense was burned | anāśitakuṭumbāni: families are starving | prabhāhīna janānica: and people with lack of beautiful appearance | alakṣmīkāni: looking distressfully. |

TRANSLATION

"I am seeing the family horses in which dirt is not swept away, with their doors wide open, bereft of splendor on all sides without any offerings being made, and with no incense burned . Families are starving and people look miserably without any charming appearance."

VERSE 40

अपेतमाल्यशोभानि असम्मृष्टाजिराणि च
देवागाराणि शून्यानि न चाभान्ति यथापुरम्

apetamālyaśobhāni asammṛṣṭājirāṇi ca
devāgārāṇi śūnyāni na cābhānti yathāpuram

SYNONYMS

devāgārāṇi: the temples of gods | śūnyāni: are deserted | nābhānticga: and have lost their radiance | apetamālya śobhāni: with their splendor of floral decoration lost | asammṛṣṭājirāṇica: nor are any assembling to perform sacrifices | yathāpuram: as before. |

TRANSLATION

"The temples of gods are deserted and have lost their radiance, with their splendor of floral decorations lost, nor are there any assembling to perform sacrifices as before."

VERSE 41

देवतार्चाः प्रविद्धाश्च यज्ञ्गोष्ठ्यस्तथाविधाः
माल्यापणेषु राजन्ते नाद्य पण्यानि वा तथा

devatārcāḥ praviddhāśca yajñgoṣṭhyastathāvidhāḥ
mālyāpaṇeṣu rājante nādya paṇyāni vā tathā

SYNONYMS

devatārcāh: worships of the deities | praviddhāḥca: were placed aside | yajṅa goṣṭyaḥ: Assemblies of prayers | tathāvidhāh: are also in the same condition | tathā: and | paṇyāni: saleable garlands | rarājante: are not adorning | mālyāpaṇeṣu: the garland stands | adya: today. |

TRANSLATION

"Worships of the deities were placed aside. Assemblies of prayers are also not adorned with saleable flowers and garlands today."

VERSE 42

दृश्यन्ते वणिजो।अप्यद्य न यथापूर्वमत्रवै
ध्यानसम्विग्नहृदयाः नष्टव्यापारयन्त्रिताः

dṛśyante vaṇijo|apyadya na yathāpūrvamatravai
dhyānasamvignahṛdayāḥ naṣṭavyāpārayantritāḥ

SYNONYMS

vaṇijo api: even traders | naṣṭavyāpāra yantritā: who lost interest in trading tie ups | dhyāna samvigrahṛdayāḥ: and with their minds agitated with thoughts | na dṛśyante: are not being seen | atra: here | yathā pūrvam: as before | adya: today. |

TRANSLATION

"Even traders lost interest in trading tie-ups and their minds are tied up in thoughts. They are not being seen here today, as before."

VERSE 43

देवायतनचैत्येषुदीनाः पक्षिगणास्तथा

devāyatanacaityeṣudīnāḥ pakṣigaṇāstathā

SYNONYMS

44| tathā: and | pakṣigaṇāḥ: cluster of birds | dīnāḥ: look miserable | devāyatānacaityeṣu: in temples and large trees | paśyāmi: I see | janam: the population | sastrīpumsam: of men and women | pure: in the city | utkaṇṭhitam: look anguished | malinam: messy | dīnam: miserable | aśrupūrṇākṣam: with their eyes held in tears | dhyānaparam: thoughtful | kṛśam: and weak. |

TRANSLATION

"Clusters of birds in temples and large trees in the city are looking desolate. The population of men and women in the city look thoughtful anguished weak messy and despondent with their eyes held in tears."

VERSE 45

इति एवम् उक्त्वा भरतः सूतम् तम् दीन मानसः
तानि अनिष्टानि अयोध्यायाम् प्रेक्ष्य राज गृहम् ययौ

iti evam uktvā bharataḥ sūtam tam dīna mānasaḥ
tāni aniṣṭāni ayodhyāyām prekṣya rāja gṛham yayau

SYNONYMS

prekṣya: after seeing | tāni: those | aniṣṭāni: evil omens | ayodhyāyām: in Ayodhya | bharataḥ: Bharata | dīna mānasaḥ: being broken hearted | uktvā: and having spoken | ityevam: as afersaid | tam sūtam: to that charioteer | yayou: and went | rājagṛham: to the rayol palace. |

TRANSLATION

After seeing those bad omens in Ayodhya, the broken hearted Bharata spoke to the charioteer as aforesaid and went to the royal palace.

VERSE 46

ताम् शून्य शृन्ग अटक वेश्म रथ्याम्
रजो अरुण द्वार कपाट यन्त्राम्
दृष्ट्वा पुरीम् इन्द्र पुरी प्रकाशाम्
दुह्खेन सम्पूर्णतरः बभूव

tām śūnya śṛnga aṭaka veśma rathyām
rajo aruṇa dvāra kapāṭa yantrām
dṛṣṭvā purīm indra purī prakāśām
duhkhena sampūrṇataraḥ babhūva

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: beholding | tām purīm: that city of Ayodhya | indra pura prakāsam: that formerly possessed | śūnya śṛṇgāṭakaveśmarathyām: highways deserted | rajo aruṇadvāra kavāṭayantrām: the doors and hinges covered with rust | bharataḥ bhabhūa: because | sampūrṇataraḥ: overcome | duḥkhena: with grief. |

TRANSLATION

Beholding the city of Ayodhya,that formerly possessed the splendor of the capital city of Indra, now with its squares houges and high ways deserted, the doors and hinges covered with rust , Bharata was overcome with grief.

VERSE 47

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे एकसप्ततितमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye ayodhyākāṇḍe ekasaptatitamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

paśyan: seeing apriyaaNi = things disliked | manasaḥ: by the mind | yāni: which | nababhūvaḥ: did not occur | pure: in the city | anyadā: at the other times | mahātmā: the high soled Bharata | avākccirāḥ: with his head bent down | dīnamanāḥ: and with his mind miserable | praviveśa: entered | putuḥ: his father's | veśma: house | nahṛṣṭaḥ: unhappily. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing many things disenchanted to mind which did not occur at any time before in the city, the high soled Bharata with his head bent down and with his mind miserable gloomily entered his father's house.
