VERSE 1

ताम् आर्य गण सम्पूर्णाम् भरतः प्रग्रहाम् सभाम्
ददर्श बुद्धि सम्पन्नः पूर्ण चन्द्राम् निशाम् इव

tām ārya gaṇa sampūrṇām bharataḥ pragrahām sabhām
dadarśa buddhi sampannaḥ pūrṇa candrām niśām iva

SYNONYMS

bharataḥ: Bharata | buddhisampannaḥ: endowed with understanding | dadarśa: saw | tām sabhām: that assembly | āryagaṇa sampannām: enriched with the whole body of respectable men | niśāmiva: looking like a night | pūrṇa candraḥ: in full moon | pragrahām: with well-known planets. |

TRANSLATION

Bharata endowed with understanding, saw that assembly, enriched with the whole body of respectable men, looking like a night in full moon duly enriched with well-known planets.

VERSE 2.

आसनानि यथा न्यायम् आर्याणाम् विशताम् तदा
अदृश्यत घन अपाये पूर्ण चन्द्रा इव शर्वरी

āsanāni yathā nyāyam āryāṇām viśatām tadā
adṛśyata ghana apāye pūrṇa candrā iva śarvarī

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | : that | uttamā: excellent | sabhā: assembly | dyotitā: was glowed | vastrāṅga raga prabhāyā: by the brilliance of clothes and scented cosmetics | āryaṇām: of its respected members | viśatām: occupying | yathānyāyam: their appropriate | āsanāni: seats. |

TRANSLATION

That excellent assembly was aglow with the brilliance of clothes and scented cosmetics of its respected members occupying their appropriate seats.

VERSE 3

सा विद्वज्जनसम्पूर्णा सभा सुरुचिरा तदा
अदृश्यत घनापाये पूर्णचन्द्रेव शर्वरी

sā vidvajjanasampūrṇā sabhā surucirā tadā
adṛśyata ghanāpāye pūrṇacandreva śarvarī

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | sa sabhā: that assembly | surucirā: which was beautiful | vidvjjana sampūrṇā: filled with learned men | adṛśyata: looked | śarvarīva: like a night | pūrṇa candrā: in full moon | ghanāpāye: in autumn. |

TRANSLATION

That beautiful assembly filled with learned men looked like a night with autumn full moon.

VERSE 4

राज्ञः तु प्रकृतीः सर्वाः समग्राः प्रेक्ष्य धर्मवित्
इदम् पुरोहितः वाक्यम् भरतम् मृदु च अब्रवीत्

rājñaḥ tu prakṛtīḥ sarvāḥ samagrāḥ prekṣya dharmavit
idam purohitaḥ vākyam bharatam mṛdu ca abravīt

SYNONYMS

prekṣya: seeing | sarvāḥ: all | samagrāḥ: the entire | prakṛtīḥ: body of ministers | rājñāḥ: of the king | purohitaḥ: Vasishta | dharmavit: the knower of righteousness | abravīt: spoke | idam: these | mṛdu: soft | vākyam: words | bharatam: to Bharata. |

TRANSLATION

Beholding all the entire body of ministers of the king, Vaishta the knower of righteousness uttered to Bharata the following soft-spoken words:

VERSE 5

तात राजा दशरथः स्वर् गतः धर्मम् आचरन्
धन धान्यवतीम् स्फीताम् प्रदाय पृथिवीम् तव

tāta rājā daśarathaḥ svar gataḥ dharmam ācaran
dhana dhānyavatīm sphītām pradāya pṛthivīm tava

SYNONYMS

tāta: O | rājā: the king | daśarathaḥ: Dasaratha | ācaran: practicing | dharmam: righteousness | pradāya: gave away | tava: to you | sphītām: this wide | pṛthivīm: earth | dhana dhānyavatīm: having riches and grains | svargataḥ: and went to heaven. |

TRANSLATION

"O, beloved Bharata! The king Dasaratha, practicing righteousness, gave away to you this wide earth endowed with grains and riches and went to heaven."

VERSE 6

रामः तथा सत्य धृतिः सताम् धर्मम् अनुस्मरन्
न अजहात् पितुर् आदेशम् शशी ज्योत्स्नाम् इव उदितः

rāmaḥ tathā satya dhṛtiḥ satām dharmam anusmaran
na ajahāt pitur ādeśam śaśī jyotsnām iva uditaḥ

SYNONYMS

tathā: and | rāmaḥ: Rama | satyadhṛtiḥ: who was firmly established in truth | smaran: remembering | dharmam: the righteousness | satām: of good men | nājahāt: did not drop off | ādeśam: the command | pituḥ: of his father | uditaḥ śaśī iva: like a raising moon | jyotsnām: the moon = light. |

TRANSLATION

"Rama, who was firmly established in truth, remembering the righteousness of good men, did not abandon the command of his father, as a raising moon does not abandon the moon-light."

VERSE 7

पित्रा भ्रात्रा च ते दत्तम् राज्यम् निहत कण्टकम्
तत् भुन्क्ष्व मुदित अमात्यः क्षिप्रम् एव अभिषेचय

pitrā bhrātrā ca te dattam rājyam nihata kaṇṭakam
tat bhunkṣva mudita amātyaḥ kṣipram eva abhiṣecaya

SYNONYMS

rājyam: the kingdom | nihatakaṅṭakam: having its enemies destroyed | dattam: was given | te: to you | pitrā: by your father | bhrātāca: and brother | bhuṇteṣva: enjoy | tat: it | muditāmātyaḥ: with its joyful ministers | abhiṣecaya: get anointed for the kingdom | kṣiprameva: just soon. |

TRANSLATION

"The kingdom, having its enemies destroy was given to you by your father and brother. Enjoy it, with its delightful ministers. Get anointed for the kingdom just soon."

VERSE 8

उदीच्याः च प्रतीच्याः च दाक्षिणात्याः च केवलाः
कोट्या अपर अन्ताः सामुद्रा रत्नानि अभिहरन्तु ते

udīcyāḥ ca pratīcyāḥ ca dākṣiṇātyāḥ ca kevalāḥ
koṭyā apara antāḥ sāmudrā ratnāni abhiharantu te

SYNONYMS

udīcyāḥ: (Let) those living in the north | pratīcyāśca: the westerners | dākṣi ṇātyāśca: the Southerners | aparāntāḥ: the kings of the western borders near the Sahya mountains | kevalāḥ: who are without a throne | sāmudrāḥ: and sea faring traders | abhiharantu: bring | koṭyā: crores | ratnāni: of jewels | te: to you (as gifts). |

TRANSLATION

"let those living in the north, the Westerners; the southerners the kings of western borders near the Sahya mountains who are without a throne and the seafaring traders bring crores of jewels as gifts to you."

VERSE 9

तत् श्रुत्वा भरतः वाक्यम् शोकेन अभिपरिप्लुतः
जगाम मनसा रामम् धर्मज्ञो धर्म कान्क्षया

tat śrutvā bharataḥ vākyam śokena abhipariplutaḥ
jagāma manasā rāmam dharmajño dharma kānkṣayā

SYNONYMS

śritvā: hearing | tat: those | vākyam: words | dharmajñaḥ: the pious | bharataḥ: Bharata | abhipariplutaḥ: was filled | śokena: with distress | jagāma: got raamam = Rama | manasā: to his mind | dharmakāṅkśayā: thirsting for justice. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those words, the pious Bharata was filled with distress and thirsting for justice got his mind fixed on Rama.

VERSE 10

स बाष्प कलया वाचा कल हंस स्वरः युवा
विललाप सभा मध्ये जगर्हे च पुरोहितम्

sa bāṣpa kalayā vācā kala haṃsa svaraḥ yuvā
vilalāpa sabhā madhye jagarhe ca purohitam

SYNONYMS

yuvā: the youthful Bharata | kalahamsa svaraḥ: with a voice of Hmasa bird | sabhāmadhye: in the midst of the assembly | vilāpa: lamented | sabaṣpakalayā: in a tearful and appealing | vācā: speech | jagarheca: and reproached | purohitam: his royal priest (as follows). |

TRANSLATION

The youthful Bharata, with a voice of a Hamsa bird, in the midst of the assembly, lamented in a tearful and appealing speech. He even reproached his royal priest as follows:

VERSE 11

चरित ब्रह्मचर्यस्य विद्या स्नातस्य धीमतः
धर्मे प्रयतमानस्य को राज्यम् मद्विधो हरेत्

carita brahmacaryasya vidyā snātasya dhīmataḥ
dharme prayatamānasya ko rājyam madvidho haret

SYNONYMS

madvidhaḥ: such as I | kaḥ: who | haret: rob | rājyam: the kingdom | carita brahmacaryasya: who practices Brahmacharya (continence and chastity) | vidyā snātasya: versed in the science of the Vedas (scared scriptures) | dhīmataḥ: a wise man | prayatamānasya: who is devoted to | dharmam: duty? |

TRANSLATION

"How can a man such as I, rob the throne from one, who practices Brahmacharya (continence and chastity), versed in the science of the Vedas (sacred scriptures) and who is devoted to duty?"

VERSE 12

कथम् दशरथाज् जातः भवेद् राज्य अपहारकः
राज्यम् च अहम् च रामस्य धर्मम् वक्तुम् इह अर्हसि

katham daśarathāj jātaḥ bhaved rājya apahārakaḥ
rājyam ca aham ca rāmasya dharmam vaktum iha arhasi

SYNONYMS

katham: How | jātaḥ: should one born | daśarāt: of Dasaratha | bhavet: become | rājyāpahārakaḥ: the unsurper of a crown? | rājyamca: the kingdom | ahamca: and I myself | rāmasya: are of Rama | arhasi: (You) ought | vaktum: to tell | dharmam: the law and justice | iha: in this matter. |

TRANSLATION

"How should one born of Dasaratha become the usurper of a crown? Both the kingdom and I myself belong to Rama. You ought to tell the law and justice in this matter."

VERSE 13

ज्येष्ठः श्रेष्ठः च धर्म आत्मा दिलीप नहुष उपमः
लब्धुम् अर्हति काकुत्स्थो राज्यम् दशरथो यथा

jyeṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ ca dharma ātmā dilīpa nahuṣa upamaḥ
labdhum arhati kākutstho rājyam daśaratho yathā

SYNONYMS

kākuttsaḥ: Rama | jyeṣṭaḥ: who is the eldest son | śreṣṭahaḥ ca: an excellent man | dharmātmā: and a pious souled | dilīpanahuṣopamaḥ: who can be compared to Dilipipa* and Nahusha* | arhati: us eligible | labdhum: to obtain | rājyam: the kingdom | daśarathoyathā: as with Dasaratha. |

TRANSLATION

"Rama, the eldest son, an excellent man, a pious souled and who can be compared with Dilipa* and Nahusha*, is eligible to get the kingdom, as with Dasaratha."

PURPORT

Dilipa and Nahusha: Two most ancient and illustrious representatives of the solar and lunar dynasty respectively.
VERSE 14

अनार्य जुष्टम् अस्वर्ग्यम् कुर्याम् पापम् अहम् यदि
इक्ष्वाकूणाम् अहम् लोके भवेयम् कुल पांसनः

anārya juṣṭam asvargyam kuryām pāpam aham yadi
ikṣvākūṇām aham loke bhaveyam kula pāṃsanaḥ

SYNONYMS

yadi: If | loke: in this world | kuryām ikṣvākūṇām: kulapaamsanaH = I dishonoured the name of Ikshvaku race | aham: I | bhaveyam: should be (doing) | pāpam: a sin | anārya juṣṭam: practiced by dishounourable man | sasvargyam: which does not lead to heaven. |

TRANSLATION

"If in this world, I dishonoured the name of Ikshavaku race, I should be guilty of a sinful act, practiced by disgraceful men, which does not lead to heaven."

VERSE 15

यद्द् हि मात्रा कृतम् पापम् न अहम् तत् अभिरोचये
इहस्थो वन दुर्गस्थम् नमस्यामि कृत अन्जलिः

yadd hi mātrā kṛtam pāpam na aham tat abhirocaye
ihastho vana durgastham namasyāmi kṛta anjaliḥ

SYNONYMS

aham: I | narcaye hi: do not indeed like | tatapi: even that | pāpam: sinful act | kṛtam: done | mātrā: by my mother | ihasthaḥ: from here itself | namasyāmi: offer my salutation | kṛtāṅjaliḥ: with my joined palms | vanadurgastham: to Rama |

TRANSLATION

"I do not indeed like that sinful act done even by my mother. From here itself, I offer my salutation with my joined palms to Rama who is residing in an impassable forest."

VERSE 16

रामम् एव अनुगच्चामि स राजा द्विपदाम् वरः
त्रयाणाम् अपि लोकानाम् राघवो राज्यम् अर्हति

rāmam eva anugaccāmi sa rājā dvipadām varaḥ
trayāṇām api lokānām rāghavo rājyam arhati

SYNONYMS

anugacchami: I will follow | ramameva: Rama alone | saḥ: He | dvipadāmvaraḥ: who is the excellent among men | rājā: is the king | raghavaḥ: Rama | arhati: is eligible | rājyampi: even for the kingdom | trayāṇām lokānām: of the three worlds. |

TRANSLATION

"I will follow Rama's steps. He, who is supreme among men, is the king. Rama is eligible even for the kingdom of the three worlds."

VERSE 17

तत् वाक्यम् धर्म सम्युक्तम् श्रुत्वा सर्वे सभासदः
हर्षान् मुमुचुर् अश्रूणि रामे निहित चेतसः

tat vākyam dharma samyuktam śrutvā sarve sabhāsadaḥ
harṣān mumucur aśrūṇi rāme nihita cetasaḥ

SYNONYMS

śrutv ā: hearing | tadvākyam: those words | dharmasamyuktam: filled with righteousness | sarve: all | sabhāsadaḥ: the members of the assembly | mumucuḥ: shed | aśrūṇi: tears | harṣāt: of joy | nihita cetasaḥ: having their minds fixed upon | rāme: Rama. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those righteous words of Bharata, all the members of the assembly shed tears of joy, having their minds obsessed of Rama.

VERSE 18

यदि तु आर्यम् न शक्ष्यामि विनिवर्तयितुम् वनात्
वने तत्र एव वत्स्यामि यथा आर्यो लक्ष्मणः तथा

yadi tu āryam na śakṣyāmi vinivartayitum vanāt
vane tatra eva vatsyāmi yathā āryo lakṣmaṇaḥ tathā

SYNONYMS

na śakṣyāmi yadi: I am unable | vinivartayitum: to bring back | āryam: my elder brother | vanāt: from the forest | vatsyāmi: I shall stay | tatra: in that | vane eva: forest itself | yathā: as how | āryaḥ: the venerable | lakśmaṇaḥ: Lakshmana ( is staying). |

TRANSLATION

"If I am unable to bring back my elder brother from the forest, I shall stay back in that forest itself, as how the venerable Lakshmana is staying now."

VERSE 19

सर्व उपायम् तु वर्तिष्ये विनिवर्तयितुम् बलात्
समक्षम् आर्य मिश्राणाम् साधूनाम् गुण वर्तिनाम्

sarva upāyam tu vartiṣye vinivartayitum balāt
samakṣam ārya miśrāṇām sādhūnām guṇa vartinām

SYNONYMS

vartiṣye: I shall use | sarvopāyam: every means | balata: compulsorily | vnivartayitum: to bring back | samakṣam: before | guṇavartinām: you practicing good virtues | sādhūnām: the honourable | ārya miśrāṇām: and the distinguished men. |

TRANSLATION

"I shall use every means to bring back compulsorily, that hero before you, practicing virtues, the honourable and the distinguished men."

VERSE 20

विष्टिकर्मान्तिकाः सर्वे मार्गशोधनरक्षकाः
प्रस्थापिता मया पूर्वम् यात्रापि मम रोचते

viṣṭikarmāntikāḥ sarve mārgaśodhanarakṣakāḥ
prasthāpitā mayā pūrvam yātrāpi mama rocate

SYNONYMS

sarve: all | mārgaśodhaka rakṣakāḥ: those who are skilled in clearing paths | viṣṭikarmāntikāḥ: working on and without wages | prasthāpitāḥ: have been sent | mayā: by me | pūrvam: in advance | yatrāpi: and the journey | rocate: pleases | mame: me. |

TRANSLATION

"All those who are skilled in clearing paths working on and without wages, have been sent by me in advance and the journey so planned, pleases me."

VERSE 21

एवम् उक्त्वा तु धर्म आत्मा भरतः भ्रातृ वत्सलः
समीपस्थम् उवाच इदम् सुमन्त्रम् मन्त्र कोविदम्

evam uktvā tu dharma ātmā bharataḥ bhrātṛ vatsalaḥ
samīpastham uvāca idam sumantram mantra kovidam

SYNONYMS

bharataḥ: Bharata | dharmātmā: the pious minded | bhrātruvatālaḥ: who had an affection for his brother | uktvā tu: spoke | evam: thus | uvāca: and uttered | idam: these words | sumantram: to Sumantra | mantra kovidam: and who was sitting nearby. |

TRANSLATION

The pious minded Bharata, who had an affection for his brother spoke as aforesaid and uttered the following words to Sumantra who was clever in giving counsel and who was sitting nearby.

VERSE 22

तूर्णम् उत्थाय गच्च त्वम् सुमन्त्र मम शासनात्
यात्राम् आज्ञापय क्षिप्रम् बलम् चैव समानय

tūrṇam utthāya gacca tvam sumantra mama śāsanāt
yātrām ājñāpaya kṣipram balam caiva samānaya

SYNONYMS

sumantra: O | utthāya: rise | tūrṇam: quickly | gacha: and go | mama: as per my | śāsanāt: orders | āzñāpaya: and arrange | yatrām: for the journey | kṣipram: immediately | samānaye: bring | balamcaiva: the army also. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Sumantra! Rise quickly and go. As per my orders, arrange for the jorney immediately. Bring the army also."

VERSE 23

एवम् उक्तः सुमन्त्रः तु भरतेन महात्मना
हृष्टः सो अदिशत् सर्वम् यथा संदिष्टम् इष्टवत्

evam uktaḥ sumantraḥ tu bharatena mahātmanā
hṛṣṭaḥ so adiśat sarvam yathā saṃdiṣṭam iṣṭavat

SYNONYMS

uktaḥ: spoken | evam: thus | bharatena: by Bharata | mahātmanā: the high-souled | sumantraḥ: Sumantra | hṛṣṭaḥ: was delighted | sarvam: all | tat: that | yathā samdiṣṭam: in accord with orders | iṣṭavat: and wishes. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of the magnanimous Bharata, Sumantra joyfully arranged all that in accord with Bharata's orders and wishes.

VERSE 24

ताः प्रहृष्टाः प्रकृतयो बल अध्यक्षा बलस्य च
श्रुत्वा यात्राम् समाज्ञप्ताम् राघवस्य निवर्तने

tāḥ prahṛṣṭāḥ prakṛtayo bala adhyakṣā balasya ca
śrutvā yātrām samājñaptām rāghavasya nivartane

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | yātrām: about the expedition | balasya ca: of the army also | nivartane: for the return | rāghavasya: of Rama | tāḥ: those | prakṛtayaḥ: ministers | balādhyakṣā: and army-commanders | rahṛṣṭāḥ: were delighted. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing about the expedition of the army too; for arranging of return of Rama, the ministers and army-commander there were delighted.

VERSE 25

ततः योध अन्गनाः सर्वा भर्तृऋन् सर्वान् गृहे गृहे
यात्रा गमनम् आज्ञाय त्वरयन्ति स्म हर्षिताः

tataḥ yodha anganāḥ sarvā bhartṛṛn sarvān gṛhe gṛhe
yātrā gamanam ājñāya tvarayanti sma harṣitāḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | sarvāḥ: all | yodhāṅganāḥ: the wives of warriors | gṛhe gṛhe: in every house | ājñāya: knowing | yatrāgamanam: about the ensuing expedition | harṣitāḥ: were joyful | tvarayantisma: and hurried up | srvām: all (their respective) | bhartṛin: husbands. |

TRANSLATION

All the wives of warriors in every house, knowing about the ensuing expedition, were jubiliant and hurried up all their respective husband to setoff for the journey.

VERSE 26

ते हयैः गो रथैः शीघ्रैः स्यन्दनैः च मनो जवैः
सह योधैः बल अध्यक्षा बलम् सर्वम् अचोदयन्

te hayaiḥ go rathaiḥ śīghraiḥ syandanaiḥ ca mano javaiḥ
saha yodhaiḥ bala adhyakṣā balam sarvam acodayan

SYNONYMS

te: those | balādhyakṣāḥ: commanders of the army | acodayam: urged | sarvam: the entire | balam: army | (to marc quickly) śīghraiḥ: as also the fast-moving | hayaiḥ: horses | gorathaiḥ: bullock-carts | mahājavaiḥ: with great speed | syandanaiśca: the chariots | yodhaiśca saha: along with the warriors. |

TRANSLATION

Those army-generals urged the entire army to march forward quickly, with the fast moving horses, bullock carts with a good speed and the chariots along with the warriors.

VERSE 27

सज्जम् तु तत् बलम् दृष्ट्वा भरतः गुरु सम्निधौ
रथम् मे त्वरयस्व इति सुमन्त्रम् पार्श्वतः अब्रवीत्

sajjam tu tat balam dṛṣṭvā bharataḥ guru samnidhau
ratham me tvarayasva iti sumantram pārśvataḥ abravīt

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | tat balam: that army | sajjam: ready | bharataḥ: Bharata | gurusannidhau: in the presence of Vasishta | abravīt: spoke | sumantram: to Sumatra | pārśvataḥ: who was standing by his side | iti: thus | tvarayasya: get ready quickly | me: my | ratham: chariot." |

TRANSLATION

Seeing that army ready, Bharata in the presence of Vasishta said as follows to Sumantra who was standing by his side: "Get ready my chariot quickly."

VERSE 28

भरतस्य तु तस्य आज्ञाम् प्रतिगृह्य प्रहर्षितः
रथम् गृहीत्वा प्रययौ युक्तम् परम वाजिभिः

bharatasya tu tasya ājñām pratigṛhya praharṣitaḥ
ratham gṛhītvā prayayau yuktam parama vājibhiḥ

SYNONYMS

pratigṛhya: accepting | ājñām: the command | tasya bharatasya: of that | gṛhītvā: and taking | ratham: a chariot | yuktam: yoked | paramavājibhiḥ: with excellent horses | prayayau: approached him | harṣitaḥ: with delight. |

TRANSLATION

Bowing to the command of Bharata and taking a chariot yoked with excellent horses, Sumantra on his part approached him with delight.

VERSE 29

स राघवः सत्य धृतिः प्रतापवान्
ब्रुवन् सुयुक्तम् दृढ सत्य विक्रमः
गुरुम् महा अरण्य गतम् यशस्विनम्
प्रसादयिष्यन् भरतः अब्रवीत् तदा

sa rāghavaḥ satya dhṛtiḥ pratāpavān
bruvan suyuktam dṛḍha satya vikramaḥ
gurum mahā araṇya gatam yaśasvinam
prasādayiṣyan bharataḥ abravīt tadā

SYNONYMS

Bharataḥ: Bharata | rāghavaḥ: born in Raghu dynasty | satyadhṛtiḥ: who was sincere in purpose | pratāpavān: a powerful man | dṛḍha satyavikramaḥ: having strong and mighty prowess | bruvan: who talked | suyuktam: most appropriately | tadā: then | abravīt: spoke | prasādayiṣyan: intending to obtain the grace | gurum: of Rama his elder brother | yaśasvinam: an illustrious man | mahāraṇyagatam: staying in great woods. |

TRANSLATION

Bharata, born in Raghu dynasty who was sincere in his purpose a powerful man having strong and mighty prowess and whose talk was most appropriate, then spoke as follows: intending (to undertake a journey) to persuade his illustrious elder brother, staying in dreary woods, to return to Ayodhya.

VERSE 30

तूण समुत्थाय सुमन्त्र गच्च
बलस्य योगाय बल प्रधानान्
आनेतुम् इच्चामि हि तम् वनस्थम्
प्रसाद्य रामम् जगतः हिताय

tūṇa samutthāya sumantra gacca
balasya yogāya bala pradhānān
ānetum iccāmi hi tam vanastham
prasādya rāmam jagataḥ hitāya

SYNONYMS

ṣumantra: O | ṣumantra! samutthāya: rise up | gaccha: and proceed | tūrṇam: quickly | bala pradhānān: to tell the army- chiefs | yogāya: for arrangement | balasya: of the army | prasādya: after propitiation | tam: that | rāmam: Rama | vanastham: staying in the forest | icchami: I want | anetum: to bring him back | hitāya: for the welfare | jagataḥ: of the world. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Sumantra! Rise up and proceed quickly to inform the army-chief to arrange for the troops. After propitiating that Rama staying in the forest, I want to bring him back to Ayodhya for the welfare of the people."

VERSE 31

स सूत पुत्रः भरतेन सम्यग्
आज्ञापितः सम्परिपूर्ण कामः
शशास सर्वान् प्रकृति प्रधानान्
बलस्य मुख्याम्ः च सुहृज् जनम् च

sa sūta putraḥ bharatena samyag
ājñāpitaḥ samparipūrṇa kāmaḥ
śaśāsa sarvān prakṛti pradhānān
balasya mukhyāmḥ ca suhṛj janam ca

TRANSLATION

Sumantra, having received that explicit command from Bharata, which fulfilled his highest hopes, called all the ministers-in-chief, the chiefs of the army and the friendly multitude.

VERSE 32

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे द्व्यशीतितमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye ayodhyākāṇḍe dvyaśītitamaḥ sargaḥ

Thereupon, from every house, warriors merchants, Shudras and Brahmanas rose up and harnessed their chariots to camels, mules, well-bred elephants and horses.
