VERSE 1

तेषामञ्जलिपद्मानि प्रगृहीतानि सर्वशः
प्रतिगृह्याब्रवीद्राजा तेभ्यः प्रियहितं वचः

teṣāmañjalipadmāni pragṛhītāni sarvaśaḥ
pratigṛhyābravīdrājā tebhyaḥ priyahitaṃ vacaḥ

SYNONYMS

rājā: King (Dasaratha) | pragṛhītāni: obtained | teṣām: their | añjalipadmāni: salutation (with folded hands) resembling lotus buds | sarvaśaḥ: by all means | pratigṛhyā: accepted (that) | abravīt: (and) spoke | tebhyaḥ: to them | priyahitam: pleasing and good | vacaḥ: sentence. |

TRANSLATION

King Dasaratha, accepted their salutations with folded hands resembling lotus buds and spoke good and agreeable words to them as follows:-

VERSE 2

अहो।अस्मि परमप्रीतः प्रभावश्चातुलो मम
यन्मे ज्येष्ठं प्रियं पुत्रं यौवराज्यस्थ मिच्छथ

aho|asmi paramaprītaḥ prabhāvaścātulo mama
yanme jyeṣṭhaṃ priyaṃ putraṃ yauvarājyastha micchatha

SYNONYMS

aho: Oh! | yat icchatha: why you desire | me: my | jyeṣṭham: elder | priyam: beloved | putram: son | yauvarājyastham: as prince | paramaprītaḥ asmi: (for that)I am very pleased | mama: my | prabhāvaśca: fortune is also | atulaḥ: without comparision. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh! I am very much pleased and incomparable is my fortune in that you desire my beloved elder son to be anointed as prince. "

VERSE 3

इति प्रत्यर्च्य तान् राजा ब्राह्मणानिद मब्रवीत्
वसिष्ठं वामदेवं च तेषामेवोपशृण्वताम्

iti pratyarcya tān rājā brāhmaṇānida mabravīt
vasiṣṭhaṃ vāmadevaṃ ca teṣāmevopaśṛṇvatām

SYNONYMS

rājā: King Dasaratha | iti: thus | pratyarcya: respected | tān: them | abravīt: spoke | idam: this (sentence) | teṣām upaśṛṇvatām eva: while they were listening | vasiṣṭham: to Vasishta | Vāmadevaṃ ca: Vaamadeva and | brāhmaṇān: other brahmanas. |

TRANSLATION

King Dasaratha, thus duly returning the honor done by them, spoke while they were listening, to Vasishta, Vamadeva and other Brahmans as follows:

VERSE 4

चैत्रः श्रीमानयं मासः पुण्यः पुष्पितकाननः
यौवराज्याय रामस्य सर्वमेवोपकल्प्यताम्

caitraḥ śrīmānayaṃ māsaḥ puṇyaḥ puṣpitakānanaḥ
yauvarājyāya rāmasya sarvamevopakalpyatām

SYNONYMS

"ayam: this | caitraḥ māsaḥ: month of Chaitra | puṣpitakānanaḥ: has flowering forests | śrīmān: glorious | puṇyaḥ: auspicious | sarvam eva upakalpyatām: let all arrangements be made (for anointment of Rama as prince)" | uparate: while completing | rājñaḥ: the king's | vākye: words | abhūt: there was | mahān: great | janaghoṣaḥ: uproar ( due to applause) from people. |

TRANSLATION

"This is the glorious and auspicious month of Chaitra, in which the forests bloom with flowers. Let all arrangements be made for the coronation of Rama as prince." While these words of the king were being completed, there was a great delightful uproar of the people.

VERSE 5

शनैस्तस्मिन् प्रशान्ते च जनघोषे जनाधिपः

śanaistasmin praśānte ca janaghoṣe janādhipaḥ

SYNONYMS

tasmin: that | janaghoṣe: uproar of people | śanaiḥ: gradually | praśānte: subsided | janādhipaḥ: lord of the people | rājā: King Dasaratha | abravīt: spoke | vacanam: these words | vasiṣṭham: to Vasista | muniśārdūlam: the best of sages. |

TRANSLATION

When their applause gradually subsided, King Dasaratha spoke the following words to the best of sages, Vasishta.

VERSE 6

अभिषेकाय रामस्य यत्कर्म सपरिच्छदम्

abhiṣekāya rāmasya yatkarma saparicchadam

SYNONYMS

bhagavan: Oh divine Vasishta! | arhasi: you are suitable | adya: now | ājñāpayitum: to order for | sarvam: all | tat karma yat: the traditional ceremonial which (needs) to be done | saparicchadam: including the accessories (that are needed ) | abhiṣekāya rāmasya: for the anointing ceremony of Rama. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh Divine Vasishta! Be pleased to order now for the traditional ceremonial that is to be done and various accessories needed for the anointing ceremony of Rama."

VERSE 7

तच्छ्रुत्वा भूमिपालस्य वसिष्ठो द्विजसत्तमः

tacchrutvā bhūmipālasya vasiṣṭho dvijasattamaḥ

SYNONYMS

vasiṣṭhaḥ: Vasishta | dvijasattamaḥ: the best of brahmanas | śrutvā: heard | tat: that (sentence) | bhūmipālasya: of king Dasaratha | ādideśa: ordered | yuktān: the officers | sthitān: who were there | kṛtāñjalīn: with folded hands | agrataḥ: before | rājñaḥ: the king. |

TRANSLATION

Vasishta, the best of Brahmans, hearing the words of king Dasaratha, ordered the officers who stood there with folded hands before the king, as follows: -

VERSE 8

सुवर्णादीनि रत्नानि बलीन् सर्वौषधीरपि

suvarṇādīni ratnāni balīn sarvauṣadhīrapi

11| upasthāpayata: gather | agnyagāram: in the sacred fire house | mahīpate: of the king | prātaḥ: at dawn | suvarṇādīni: gold and the like | ratnāni: diamonds | balīn: things needed to perform pooja (worship) | sarvauṣadhīḥ api: various herbs | śuklamālyān ca: white floral garlands | lājān ca: corn | madhusarpiṣī: honey and clarified butter | pṛthak: separately | ahatāni vāsāṃsi ca: new clothes | ratham: chariot | sarvāyudhānyapi: all weapons | caturaṅgabalaṃca iva: the four divisions of army | gajam ca: elephant | śubhalakśaṇam: with good signs | śvete: white | cāmaravyajane: fans made from the skin of an animal called chamari | dhvajam: pillar (or) staff | pāṇḍuram: white | chatraṃ ca: umbrella | śataṃ ca: one hundred | śātakumbhānām: golden hued | kumbhānām: pots | agnivarcasām: brilliant like fire | ṛṣabham: bull | hiraṇyaśṛṅgam: with golden horns | samagram: complete | vyāghracarma ca: tiger skin. |

TRANSLATION

"Gather the following in the sacred fire house of the king at dawn: gold and the like, diamonds, things needed to perform worship, various herbs, white floral garlands, corn, honey and clarified butter in separate vessels, new clothes, chariot, all weapons, the four divisions of army, an elephant with auspicious signs, white fan, flag staff, white umbrella, one hundred golden pots with brilliant shine, bull with gilded horns and a complete tiger skin".

VERSE 12

यच्चान्यत्किञ्चिदेष्टव्यं तत्सर्वमुपकल्प्यताम्

अस्तःपुरस्य द्वाराणि सर्वस्य नगरस्य च
चन्दनस्रग्भिरर्च्यन्तां धूपैश्च घ्राणहारिभिः

yaccānyatkiñcideṣṭavyaṃ tatsarvamupakalpyatām

astaḥpurasya dvārāṇi sarvasya nagarasya ca
candanasragbhirarcyantāṃ dhūpaiśca ghrāṇahāribhiḥ

SYNONYMS

13| anyat: (if) other | yat ca kiñcit: even small thing | eṣṭavyam: is required | upakalpyatām tat sarvam: let all of it be arranged | dvārāṇi: doorways | antaḥpurasya: of royal palace | sarvasya nagarasya ca: of entire city also | arcyantām: be worshipped | candanasragbhiḥ: with sandal paste and floral garlands | ghrāṇahāribhiḥ: attractive smelling | dhūpaiḥ: incense. |

TRANSLATION

"If any other small things are required, arrange for all of them. Let the doorways of the royal palace and those of the entire city be worshipped with sandalwood paste, floral garlands and good smelling incense."

VERSE 14

प्रशस्तमन्नं गुणवद्धधिक्षीरोपसेचनम्
द्विजानां शतसाहस्रे यत्प्रकाममलं भवेत्

praśastamannaṃ guṇavaddhadhikṣīropasecanam
dvijānāṃ śatasāhasre yatprakāmamalaṃ bhavet

SYNONYMS

praśastam: fine | annam: rice | guṇavat: of good quality | dadhi kśīropasecanam: with yoghurt and milk | prakāmam: completely | alaṃ bhavet: sufficient for | śatasāhasre: one hundred thousand | dvijānām: brahmanaas. |

TRANSLATION

"Let fine rice of good quality with milk and yogurt, fully sufficient for one hundred thousand Brahmans be arranged."

VERSE 15

सत्कृत्य द्विजमुख्यानां श्वः प्रभाते प्रदीयताम्
घृतं दधि च लाजाश्च दक्षिणाश्चापि पुष्कलाः

satkṛtya dvijamukhyānāṃ śvaḥ prabhāte pradīyatām
ghṛtaṃ dadhi ca lājāśca dakṣiṇāścāpi puṣkalāḥ

SYNONYMS

pradīyatām: let (that rice) be given | satkṛtya: with respect | śvaḥ: tomorrow | prabhāte: at dawn | dvijamukhyānām: to important Brahmans | ghṛtam: (along with) clarified butter | dadhi ca: yoghurt | lājāḥ ca: corn and | puṣkalāḥ: lot of | dakśiṇāścāpi: gifts also. |

TRANSLATION

"Let that rice be given with due respect to important Brahmans tomorrow at dawn; along with clarified butter, yogurt, corn, and lot of gifts."

VERSE 16

सूर्ये।अभ्युदितमात्रे श्वो भविता स्वस्तिवाचनम्
ब्राह्मणाश्च निमन्त्र्यन्तां कल्प्यन्तामासनानि च

sūrye|abhyuditamātre śvo bhavitā svastivācanam
brāhmaṇāśca nimantryantāṃ kalpyantāmāsanāni ca

SYNONYMS

bhavitā: there will be | svastivācanam: chorus invocating well being of all | śvaḥ: tomorrow | abhyuditamātre: soon after the rise of | sūrye: sun | brāhmaṇāḥ ca: brahmanas | nimantryantām: be summoned | āsanāni ca: and seats | kalpyantām: be arranged. |

TRANSLATION

"There will be an invocation for the well being of all, tomorrow at sun rise. Let brahmanas be invited and suitable seats be arranged for them."

VERSE 17

आबध्यन्तां पताकाश्च राजमार्गश्च सिच्यताम्
सर्वे च ताल्दावचरा गणिकाश्च स्वलंकृताः

ābadhyantāṃ patākāśca rājamārgaśca sicyatām
sarve ca tāldāvacarā gaṇikāśca svalaṃkṛtāḥ

SYNONYMS

patākāḥ ca ābadhyantām: let flags be hung | rājamārgaḥ ca sicyatāṃ ca: let royal roads be made wet | sarve: (let)all | svalaṃkṛtāḥ: well dressed | tāḻāvacarāḥ: musicians | gaṇikāḥ ca: dancers | āsādya: get | dvitīyām: second | kakśyām: enclosure | nṛpaveśmanaḥ: of royal palace | tiṣṭhantu: to stay. |

TRANSLATION

"Let the flags be hung and the royal highways be sprinkled with water. Let well dressed dancers and musicians wait in second enclosure in the royal compound."

VERSE 18

देवायतनचैत्येषु सान्नभक्षाः सदक्षिणाः

devāyatanacaityeṣu sānnabhakṣāḥ sadakṣiṇāḥ

SYNONYMS

devāyatanacaityeṣu: in temples and at road junctions | yogyāḥ: deserving people | upasthāpayitavyāḥ syuḥ: be gathered | sānna: with rice | bhakśāḥ: eatables | sadakśiṇāḥ: with presents | mālya: garlands | pṛthak pṛthak: separately. |

TRANSLATION

"As worshipping is to be done in temples and at road junctions, let some deserving people gather there with rice, eatables, presents and garlands separately."

VERSE 19

दीर्घासिबद्धा योधाश्च सन्नद्धा मृष्टवाससः

dīrghāsibaddhā yodhāśca sannaddhā mṛṣṭavāsasaḥ

SYNONYMS

sarve: (let) all the | yodhāśca: warriors also | praviśastu: enter | mahodayam: well developed | mahārājāṅgaṇam: front yard of royal palace | dīrghāsibaddhāḥ: wearing long swords | sannaddhāḥ: wearing armors | mṛṣṭavāsasaḥ: wearing washed clothes. |

TRANSLATION

"Let all the warriors enter the well developed front yard of the royal palace with long swords, armors and clean clothing."

VERSE 20

एवं व्यादिश्य विप्रौ तौ क्रियास्तत्र सुनिष्ठितौ

evaṃ vyādiśya viprau tau kriyāstatra suniṣṭhitau

SYNONYMS

tau: those | viprau = visemen: Vasishta and Vamadeva | suniṣṭhitau: with good attention | evam: thus | vyādiśya: ordered | kriyāḥ: things to be done | tatra: there | nivedya ca: informed | pārthivāya: the king Dasaratha | cakratuḥ ca eva: also performed | yat śeṣam: (those things) that remained. |

TRANSLATION

Those wise men Vasishta and Vamadeva attentively ordered for all those things to be done there, informed that to king Dasaratha and performed the remaining things also.

VERSE 21

कृतमित्येव चाब्रूतामभिगम्य जगत्पतिम्

kṛtamityeva cābrūtāmabhigamya jagatpatim

SYNONYMS

prītau: satisfied | harṣayuktau: with pleasure | dvijarṣabhau: the best of brahmanas | abhigamya: approached | jagatpatim = king ḍasaratha: the lord of world | abrūtām: and told him | kṛtamityeva: that all had been done | yathoktavacanam: as per his words. |

TRANSLATION

Pleased and satisfied with the arrangements made Vasishta and Vamadeva approached king Dasaratha and told him that all had been done according to his words.

VERSE 22

ततः सुमन्त्रं द्युतिमान् राजा वचनमब्रवीत्

tataḥ sumantraṃ dyutimān rājā vacanamabravīt

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: afterwards | dyutimān: radiant | rājā: king Dasaratha | abravīt: spoke | iti: thus | sumantram: to Sumantra | vacanam: these words | rāmaḥ: Rama | kṛtātmā: who has a disciplined intellect | anīyatām: be brought | bhavatā: by you | śīghram: immediately. |

TRANSLATION

Afterwards, Dasaratha spoke to Sumantra "Let Rama, who has a disciplined intellect, be brought by you immediately."

VERSE 23

स तथेति प्रतिज्ञाय सुमन्त्रो राजशासनात्

sa tatheti pratijñāya sumantro rājaśāsanāt

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that | sumantraḥ: Sumantra | pratijñāya: spoke | tathā iti: that would be done accordingly | ānayāṃcakre: brought | rāmam: Rama | varam: the best among | rathināṃ: charioteers | tatra: there | rathena: in a chariot | rāja śāsanāt: as commanded by the king. |

TRANSLATION

As commanded by the king, Sumantra brought there, Rama, the best of charioteers, in a chariot.

VERSE 24

अथ तत्र समासीनास्तदा दशरथं नृपम्

atha tatra samāsīnāstadā daśarathaṃ nṛpam

SYNONYMS

25| atha: afterwards (after Sumantra left) | bhūmipāḥ: kings | prācyodīcyāḥ: belonging to east | pratīcyāḥ ca: and belonging to west | dākśiṇātyāḥ ca: and belonging to south | mlecchāḥ ca: those belonging to the country of Mlechha | āryāḥ ca: and belonging to the country of AryaaVarta | vane: in forest areas | anye: others | ye: who are | śailāntavāsinaḥ: staying in hilly areas | sarve: all | samāsīnāḥ: sat | tatra: there | tadā: then | upāsāñcakrire: attended on | tam: that | dasaratham nrṛpam: king Dasaratha | vāsavamiva: as to Devendra | devāḥ: by celestials. |

TRANSLATION

Afterwards the kings belonging to east, west, north, south as well as those belonging to Mlechha kingdom, Aryaa Vartha kingdom and those ruling in hill and forest areas sat there and attended on King Dasaratha as celestials attended on Devendra.

VERSE 26

तेषां मध्ये स राजर्षिर्मरुतामिव वासवः

teṣāṃ madhye sa rājarṣirmarutāmiva vāsavaḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that | rājarṣiḥ: the sage and the king Dasaratha | madhye: in the midst | teṣāṃ: of them | vāsavaḥ: like Devendra | maruthām: in the midst of celestials | dadarśa: saw | prāsādasthaḥ: staying in the palace | ātmajam: his son Rama | āyāntam: arriving | rathagatham: in a chariot. |

TRANSLATION

The sage king Dasaratha, sitting in the midst of those kings like Devendra in the middle of the celestials, saw from the palace itself, his son Rama arriving in a chariot.

VERSE 27

गन्धर्वराजप्रतिमं लोके विख्यातपौरुषम्

gandharvarājapratimaṃ loke vikhyātapauruṣam

SYNONYMS

29| gandharva rāja pratimam: equal to king of Gandharvas | vikhyāta pauruṣam: has famous valiance | loke: in the world | dīrgha bāhum: has long arms | mahāsattvam: has great strength | mattamātaṅga gāminam: has a gait like that of a vigorous elephant | candrakāntānanam: has enchanting face like the moon | atīva: very | priyadarśanam: pleasant to behold | rūpaudāryaguṇaiḥ: with looks (and his) magnanimity (and) virtues | dṛṣṭi cittāpahārakam: (he had) stolen the eyes and minds | pumsām: of men | narādhipaḥ: king Dasaratha | na tatarpa: was not satiated | paśyamānaḥ: in seeing | rāmam: Rama | samayāntam: coming | parjanyam iva: like cloud | hlādayantam: gladdening | prajāḥ: to people | gharmābhitaptāḥ: scorched by summer heat. |

TRANSLATION

Rama was as beautiful as the king of Gandharvas. His valiance was world famous. He had great strength and walked like a vigorous elephant. He had long arms, and with his enchanting face, he looked like the moon. He stole the eyes and minds of the people by his looks, generosity and virtues. King Dasaratha was thus not satiated enough in seeing Rama, coming like a cloud that gladdens people by relieving them from the scorching summer heat.

VERSE 30

अवतार्य सुमन्त्रस्तं राघवं स्यन्दनोत्तमात्

avatārya sumantrastaṃ rāghavaṃ syandanottamāt

SYNONYMS

sumantraḥ: Sumantra | avatārya tam rāghavam: helped that Rama to alight | syandanottamāt: from the excellent chariot | prāñjaliḥ: (and) with folded hands | anvagāt: followed | pṛṣṭhataḥ: behind | gacchantam: (Rama) going | samīpam: close to | pituḥ: his father. |

TRANSLATION

Sumantra helped Rama to get down from the excellent chariot and with folded hands followed behind Rama, who approached his father.

VERSE 31

स तं कैलासशृङ्गाभं प्रासादं नरपुङ्गवः

sa taṃ kailāsaśṛṅgābhaṃ prāsādaṃ narapuṅgavaḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that | rāghavaḥ: Rama | narapuṅgavaḥ: the best among men | āruroha: ascended | tam: that | prāsādam: palace | kailāsa śṛṅgābham: which is equal to Mount Kailaasa | sūtena saha: along with the driver of chariot | draṣṭum: to see | nṛpam: the king Dasaratha. |

TRANSLATION

Rama, the best among men, ascended the steps of the palace, which resembled Mount Kailaasa, along with Sumantra, to see the king Dasaratha.

VERSE 32

स प्राञ्^जलिरभिप्रेत्य प्रणतः पितुरन्तिके

sa prāñ^jalirabhipretya praṇataḥ piturantike

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that | rāmaḥ: Rama | prāñ^jaliḥ: with folded hands | abhipretya: approached | antike: nearer to | pituḥ: (to) his father's | praṇataḥ: bowed down | śrāvayan: mentioning | svam: his own | nāma: name | vavande: offered obeisance | caraṇau: feet. |

TRANSLATION

Rama with folded hands approached his father, bowed down mentioning his own name and offered salutations to his father's feet.

VERSE 33

तं दृष्ट्वा प्रणतं पार्श्वे कृताञ्जलिपुटं नृपः

taṃ dṛṣṭvā praṇataṃ pārśve kṛtāñjalipuṭaṃ nṛpaḥ

SYNONYMS

nṛpaḥ: king Dasaratha | gṛhya: caught | anjalau: by his joined hands | tam: that | priyam: beloved | ātmajam: son | praṇatam: who was (standing) humbly | pārśve: by his side | kṛtānjalipuṭam: with folded hands | samākṛṣya: drew him nearer and | sasvaje: embraced. |

TRANSLATION

King Dasaratha took into his embrace that beloved son who was standing humbly beside him with folded hands.

VERSE 34

तस्मै चाभ्युदितं दिव्यं मणिकाञ्चनभूषितं

tasmai cābhyuditaṃ divyaṃ maṇikāñcanabhūṣitaṃ

SYNONYMS

rājā: king Dasaratha | dideśa: gave | tasmai rāmāya: for that Rama | paramāsanam: great throne | abhyuditam: which is high | divyam: excellent | ruciram: beautiful | maṇikāncana bhūṣitam: decorated with gold and diamonds. |

TRANSLATION

King Dasaratha gave Rama a great throne, which was high, excellent and beautiful, decorated with gold and diamonds.

VERSE 35

तदासनवरं प्राप्य व्यदीपयत राघवः

tadāsanavaraṃ prāpya vyadīpayata rāghavaḥ

SYNONYMS

rāghavaḥ: Rama | prāpya: got | tat: that | āsanavaram: great throne | vyadīpayata: (and) caused it to shine | svayā: with his own | prabhayā: brightness | merumiva: as to Meru Mountain | udaye: in the morning | vimalaḥ: by spot less | raviḥ: sun. |

TRANSLATION

Rama, occupying that great throne, caused it to shine with his own brightness, just as the spotless sun in the morning causes Meru mountain to shine with brilliance.

VERSE 36

तेन विभ्राजता तत्र सा सभाभिव्यरोचत

tena vibhrājatā tatra sā sabhābhivyarocata

SYNONYMS

tatra: there | tena: by that Rama | vibhrājatā: shining | : that | sabhā: assembly | abhivyarocata: shone more | inudunā iva: as by the moon | śāradī: the autumn | dyauḥ: sky | vimalagrahanakśatrā: with the dimless planets and stars. |

TRANSLATION

Rama by his brilliance made that assembly to shine, just as the moon shines the clear autumnal sky, with the dimless stars and planets.

VERSE 37

तं पश्यमानो नृपति स्तुतोओष प्रियमात्मजम्

taṃ paśyamāno nṛpati stutooṣa priyamātmajam

SYNONYMS

nṛpaḥ: king Dasaratha | tutoṣa: was delighted | pasyamānaḥ: seeing | tam: that | priyam: beloved | ātmajam: son | ātmanamiva: as seeing oneself | alankṛtam: adorned | ādarśatalasamsthitam: in a mirror. |

TRANSLATION

King Dasaratha was as delighted in seeing his beloved son, as one delights in seeing oneself adorned, in a mirror.

VERSE 38

स तं सस्मितमाभाष्य पुत्रं पुत्रवतां वरः

sa taṃ sasmitamābhāṣya putraṃ putravatāṃ varaḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that | rāja: king Dasaratha | varaḥ: best | putravatām: among those who have sons | sasmitam: smilingly | ābhāṣya: conversed with | tam: that | putram: son | uvāca: spoke | idam: these | vacaḥ: words | devendramiva: as to Devendra | kāsyapaḥ: (by) kaasyapa. |

TRANSLATION

King Dasaratha, the best among those who have sons, smilingly conversed with his son, and addressed Rama as follows, as Kasyapa does to (his eldest son) Devendra (the ruler of gods).

VERSE 39

ज्येष्ठायामसि मे पत्न्यां सदृश्यां सदृशः सुतः

jyeṣṭhāyāmasi me patnyāṃ sadṛśyāṃ sadṛśaḥ sutaḥ

SYNONYMS

rāma: oh | ṟama! tvam: you | asi: are | sadṛśaḥ: worthy | sutaḥ: son | utpannaḥ: born | me: to my | sadṛśyām: worthy | jyeṣṭhāyām: elder | patnyām: wife | guṇaśreṣṭhaḥ: being excellent in virtues | priyaḥ: (you are) beloved | ātmajaḥ: son | mama: to me. |

TRANSLATION

"Oh Rama! You are an exemplary son born to my exemplary elder wife. Being excellent in virtues, you are beloved son to me."

VERSE 40

यतस्त्वया प्रजाश्चेमाः स्वगुणैरनुरञ्जिताः

yatastvayā prajāścemāḥ svaguṇairanurañjitāḥ

SYNONYMS

yataḥ: Why | tvayā: by you | imāḥ: these | prajāḥ: people | anurañjitāḥ: were cherished | svaguṇaiḥ: by your good qualities | tasmāt: for that reason | tvam: you | avāpnuhi: get | yauvarājyam: princely kingdom | puṣyayogena: on the day of Pushyami (when the moon appears in conjunction with the constellation Pushya). |

TRANSLATION

"O, Rama! As you with your good qualities cherished these people, you get the princely kingdom on the day of Pushyami star (when the moon appears in conjunction with the constellation Pushya).."

VERSE 41

कामतस्त्वं प्रकृत्यैव विनीतो गुणवानसि

kāmatastvaṃ prakṛtyaiva vinīto guṇavānasi

SYNONYMS

putra: Oh | prakṛtyaiva: by nature | tvam asi: you are | kāmataḥ: very much | vinītaḥ: humble | guṇavān: virtuous man | guṇavatyapi: even if virtuous | snehāt: friendship | vakśyāmi: I can tell | te: to you | hitam: good (words). |

TRANSLATION

"Oh, son! By nature, you are very humble and virtuous. Even then, because of my friendship with you, I can tell you this for your benefit."

VERSE 42

भूयो विनयमास्थाय भव नित्यं जितेन्द्रियः

bhūyo vinayamāsthāya bhava nityaṃ jitendriyaḥ

SYNONYMS

āsthāya: try to | bhava: become | bhūyaḥ: (even) more | vinayam: humble | nityam: always | jitendriyaḥ: (remain as) one who has victory over senses | tyajethāḥ: leave | vyasanāni ca: bad habits | kāmakrodha samutthāni: born of desire and wrath. |

TRANSLATION

"Be even more humble and always keep the senses under control. Leave the bad habits born out of desire and wrath."

VERSE 43

परोक्षया वर्तमानो वृत्त्या प्रत्यक्षया तथा

parokṣayā vartamāno vṛttyā pratyakṣayā tathā

SYNONYMS

vṛtyā: By conduct | parokśayā: indirectly | tathā: and | vartamānaḥ: operating | pratyakśayā: directly | anurañjaya: keep happy | amātya prabhṛtīḥ: (people) like ministers and others. |

TRANSLATION

"Through direct and indirect means, keep ministers and others happy."

VERSE 44

कोष्ठागारायुधागारैः कृत्वा सन्नि चयान् बहून्

koṣṭhāgārāyudhāgāraiḥ kṛtvā sanni cayān bahūn

SYNONYMS

45| amarāḥ iva: like celestials | labdhvā: (who were happy after) obtaining | amṛtam: the nectar | tasya: his | mitrāṇi: friends | nandanti: are delighted with him | yaḥ: who | pālayati: rules | medinīm: the earth | kṛtvā: by making | bahūn: many | sannicayān: good storage | koṣṭhāgarāyudhāgāraiḥ: with granaries and armories | tuṣṭānuraktaprakṛtiḥ: with delightful and happy people | tasmāt: hence | tvamapi: you too | ātmānam: (your)self | samācara: act | evam: like this. |

TRANSLATION

"Like the celestials becoming happy after obtaining the nectar, friends of a king (ruler of earth) are delighted when he fills the granaries and armories to the brim, making the common people delightful and happy. Hence, you too act like this."

VERSE 46

तच्छ्रुत्वा सुहृदस्तस्य रामस्य प्रियकारिणः

tacchrutvā suhṛdastasya rāmasya priyakāriṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

tasya: that | rāmasya: Rama's | suhṛdaḥ: friends | śrutvā: after hearing | tat: that | tvaritāḥ: hurriedly | priyakāriṇaḥ: intending to do good | śīghram: immediately | abhyetya: came | kausalyāyai: to Kausalya | nyavedayan: (and) informed (her of the good news). |

TRANSLATION

The well -wishers of Rama, after hearing those words, intending to do good to Kausalya, immediately came to her and informed the matter to her.

VERSE 47

सा हिरण्यं च गाश्चैव रत्नानि विविधानि च

sā hiraṇyaṃ ca gāścaiva ratnāni vividhāni ca

SYNONYMS

pramadottamā: the best among women | : that | kausalyā: Kausalya | vyādideśa: gave away | hiraṇyaṃ ca: gold | gāḥ caiva: cows and | vividhāni: different types of | ratnānica: diamonds also | priyākhyebhyaḥ: to those who informed the good news. |

TRANSLATION

The best among women, Kausalya gave away gold, cows and different types of diamonds to those who informed her good news.

VERSE 48

अथाभिवाद्य राजानं रथमारुह्य राघवः

athābhivādya rājānaṃ rathamāruhya rāghavaḥ

SYNONYMS

atha: afterwards | rāghavaḥ: Rama | abhivādya: salutated | rājānam: to king Dasaratha | āruhya: (and) alighted | ratham: the chariot | yayau: (and) went | svam veśma: for his house | dyutimat: (which was) splendid | pratipūjitaḥ: after being worshipped | janaughaiḥ: by the crowds. |

TRANSLATION

Rama, after offering salutations to king Dasaratha, ascended the chariot and went to his splendid house after being worshipped by the crowds on the way.
