Sundara Kanda (Book of Beauty)

Book Cover

Sundara Kāṇḍa is the luminous heart of the Rāmāyaṇa, centered entirely around Hanumān’s unparalleled heroism and devotion. It begins with Hanumān’s leap across the ocean to the island of Laṅkā, overcoming mountain spirits, sea creatures, and divine tests. Upon entering Laṅkā, he witnesses its grandeur, confronts its hidden dangers, and ultimately finds Sītā in the Aśoka grove—grief-stricken yet unwavering in her chastity and faith in Rāma. Hanumān consoles her, gives Rāma’s ring as a token of hope, and reassures her of rescue. Afterward, Hanumān displays immense strength by destroying parts of Laṅkā, defeating its warriors, and allowing himself to be captured to deliver a final warning to Rāvaṇa. Escaping unscathed, he returns to Rāma with the joyous news of Sītā’s whereabouts. Sundara Kāṇḍa symbolizes courage, purity, and the triumph of devotion.
