VERSE 1

तस्याः तत् वचनम् श्रुत्वा हनूमान् हरि यूथपः
दुह्खात् दुह्ख अभिभूतायाः सान्तम् उत्तरम्
अब्रवीत्

tasyāḥ tat vacanam śrutvā hanūmān hari yūthapaḥ
duhkhāt duhkha abhibhūtāyāḥ sāntam uttaram
abravīt

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | tat: that | vacanam: speech | tasyāḥ: of that Seetha | duḥkhāt duḥkhābhibhūtayāḥ: who was overthrown from one grief to another | hanumān: Hanumaan | haripuṅgavaḥ: the best of monkeys | abravīt: spoke | sāntvam: in a kindly and affectionate | uttaram: reply. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those words of Seetha who was overthrown from one grief to another, Hanuma the best of monkeys gave the following reply in a kindly and affectionate manner.

VERSE 2

अहम् रामस्य संदेशात् देवि दूतः तव आगतः
वैदेहि कुशली रामः त्वाम् च कौशलम् अब्रवीत्

aham rāmasya saṃdeśāt devi dūtaḥ tava āgataḥ
vaidehi kuśalī rāmaḥ tvām ca kauśalam abravīt

SYNONYMS

devī: O princess | vaidehi: Seetha | aham: I | āgataḥ: have come | tava dūtaḥ: as your messenger | rāmasya sandeśāt: on the direction of Rama | kusalī: the virtuous | rāmaḥ: Rama | abravīt: enquired | tvāmca kuśalam: about your welfare too. |

TRANSLATION

"O Seetha the daughter of the king of Videha Kingdom! I have come here as your messenger on Rama's directions. The virtuous Rama enquired about your welfare too."

VERSE 3

यो ब्राह्मम् अस्त्रम् वेदान् च वेद वेदविदाम् वरः
स त्वाम् दाशरथी रामो देवि कौशलम्
अब्रवीत्

yo brāhmam astram vedān ca veda vedavidām varaḥ
sa tvām dāśarathī rāmo devi kauśalam
abravīt

SYNONYMS

devī: O divine lady! saH = such | rāmaḥ: Rama | dāśarathiḥ: the son of Dasaratha | yaḥ: who | varaḥ: is excellent | veda vidām: among the knower of Veda | veda: and who knows | brahmam astram: Brahma's missile (a mythical weapon which deals infallible destruction) | vedāmśca: and Vedas the sacred knowledge | abravīt: enquired | tvām: you | kauśalam: about your welfare. |

TRANSLATION

"O Divine Lady! Rama the son of Dasaratha, who is excellent among the knowers of Veda and who knows Brahma's missile (a mythical weapon which deals infallible destruction) and Vedas the sacred knowledge, enquired about your welfare."

VERSE 4

लक्ष्मणः च महातेजा भर्तुः ते अनुचरः प्रियः
कृतवान् शोक सम्तप्तः शिरसा ते अभिवादनम्

lakṣmaṇaḥ ca mahātejā bhartuḥ te anucaraḥ priyaḥ
kṛtavān śoka samtaptaḥ śirasā te abhivādanam

SYNONYMS

lakṣmaṇaśca: also Lakshmana | mahātejāḥ: having a great splendour | priyaḥ: the favourite brother | anucaraḥ: and the follower | te bhartuḥ: of your husband | śoka santaptaḥ: tormented with grief | kṛtavān: performed | te abhivādanam: salutation to you | śirasā: with his head. |

TRANSLATION

"Also the greatly splendourous Lakshmana, the favourite brother and the follower of your husband, himself tormented with grief, performed salutation to you by bowing his head."

VERSE 5

सा तयोः कुशलम् देवी निशम्य नर सिम्हयोः
प्रीति सम्हृष्ट सर्व अन्गी हनूमान्तम् अथ
अब्रवीत्

sā tayoḥ kuśalam devī niśamya nara simhayoḥ
prīti samhṛṣṭa sarva angī hanūmāntam atha
abravīt

SYNONYMS

niśamya: hearing | tayoḥ: that | kuśalam: (news of) welfare | narasimhayoḥ: of Rama and Lakshmana the excellent among men | sā devī: that divine lady | prīti samhṛṣṭa sarvāṇgī: with all her limbs thrilled with joy | atha: then | abravīt: spoke | hanumantam: to Hanuma (as follows). |

TRANSLATION

Hearing that news of welfare of Rama and Lakshmana the excellent of men, the divine lady, with all her limbs thrilled with joy, spoke to Hanuma (as follows):

VERSE 6

कल्याणी बत गथा इयम् लौकिकी प्रतिभाति मे
एहि जीवन्तम् आनदो नरम् वर्ष शतात् अपि

kalyāṇī bata gathā iyam laukikī pratibhāti me
ehi jīvantam ānado naram varṣa śatāt api

SYNONYMS

ānandaḥ: joy | eti: rushes | naram: man | varṣaśatādapi: even though (it be) at the end of a hundred years | iyam: this | laukikīr: wordly | gāthā: adage | pratibhāti: appears | kalyāṇi: auspicious | : to me. |

TRANSLATION

" 'Joy rushes to surviving man even though (it be) as the end of a hundred years' - this popular adage appears true and and auspicious for me."

VERSE 7

तयोः समागमे तस्मिन् प्रीतिः उत्पादिता अद्भुता
परस्परेण च आलापम् विश्वस्तौ तौ प्रचक्रतुः

tayoḥ samāgame tasmin prītiḥ utpāditā adbhutā
paraspareṇa ca ālāpam viśvastau tau pracakratuḥ

SYNONYMS

tasmin: In that Hanuma | samāgate: who approached (her) | adbhutā: a wonderful | prītiḥ: friendly disposition | utpāditā: was brought forth | tayā: by her | tau: the two of them | viśvastau: with full of confidence | cakratuḥ: made | ālāpamca: conversation | paraspareṇa: with each other. |

TRANSLATION

Seetha showed wonderful friendly disposition towards Hanuma who approached her. Both of them also conversed with each other in full confidence.

VERSE 8

तस्याः तत् वचनम् श्रुत्वा हनूमान् हरि यूथपः
सीतायाः शोक दीनायाः समीपम् उपचक्रमे

tasyāḥ tat vacanam śrutvā hanūmān hari yūthapaḥ
sītāyāḥ śoka dīnāyāḥ samīpam upacakrame

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | tat: that | vacanam: reply | tasyāḥ: of that | sītāyāḥ: Seetha | śoka dīnayāḥ: who was afflicted with | hanumān: Hanuma | hari yūthapaḥ: the army-chief of monkeys | upacakrame: endeavoured to draw | samīpam: nearer (to her). |

TRANSLATION

Hearing that reply of Seetha who was afflicted with grief, Hanuma the army-chief of monkeys endeavoured to draw nearer to her.

VERSE 9

यथा यथा समीपम् स हनूमान् उपसर्पति
तथा तथा रावणम् सा तम् सीता परिशन्कते

yathā yathā samīpam sa hanūmān upasarpati
tathā tathā rāvaṇam sā tam sītā pariśankate

SYNONYMS

yathā yathā: in as much as | saḥ hanumān: that Hanuma | upasarpati: drew | samīpam: nearer to her | tathā tathā: in so much way | sā sītā: that Seetha | pariśaṅkate: suspected | tam: him | rāvaṇam: as Ravana. |

TRANSLATION

In as much as that Hanuma drew nearer to her, in the same way, that Seetha suspected him as Ravana.

VERSE 10

अहो धिग् धिग् कृतम् इदम् कथितम् हि यत् अस्य मे
रूप अन्तरम् उपागम्य स एव अयम् हि
रावणः

aho dhig dhig kṛtam idam kathitam hi yat asya me
rūpa antaram upāgamya sa eva ayam hi
rāvaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

aho dhik: O shame! | me duṣkṛtam: It was my guilt | kathitam: to tell | asya: him | idam: (all) this | ayam: he | saḥ rāvaṇaḥ hi: is indeed that Ravana | upāgamya: who obtained | rūpāntaram: another guise. |

TRANSLATION

"O shame! It was my guilt to tell him all this to him. He is indeed that Ravana, who obtained another guise."

VERSE 11

ताम् अशोकस्य शाखाम् सा विमुक्त्वा शोक कर्शिता
तस्याम् एव अनवद्य अन्गी धरण्याम् समुपाविशत्

tām aśokasya śākhām sā vimuktvā śoka karśitā
tasyām eva anavadya angī dharaṇyām samupāviśat

SYNONYMS

: that Seetha | anavadyāṅgī: having faultless limbs | vimuktyā: leaving | tām: that | śākhām: branch | aśokasya: of Ashoka tree | śoka karśitā: and emaciated with grief | samupāviśat: sat down | tasyām dharaṇyāmeva: on that floor itself. |

TRANSLATION

That Seetha, having faultless limbs, leaving that branch of Ashoka tree and as emaciated with grief, sat down on that ground itself.

VERSE 12

हनुमानपि दुःखार्तां तां दृष्ट्वा भयमोहिताम्
अवन्दत महाबाहुः ततः ताम् जनक आत्मजाम्

hanumānapi duḥkhārtāṃ tāṃ dṛṣṭvā bhayamohitām
avandata mahābāhuḥ tataḥ tām janaka ātmajām

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | tām: her | duḥkhārtam: afflicted with grief | bhaya mohitam: and deluded with fear | hanumānapi: also Hanuma | mahābāhuḥ: the grea armed | tataḥ: then | avandata: saluted | tām janakātmajam: that Seetha | sā ca: she too | bhaya vitrastā: trembling with fear | nā abhyudaikṣata: did not look towards | enam: him | bhūyaḥ: again. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing Seetha afflicted with grief and deluded with fear, the great armed Hanuma also then simply saluted her. She too, trembling with fear, did not look towards him again.

VERSE 13

तम् दृष्ट्वा वन्दमानम् तु सीता शशि निभ आनना

tam dṛṣṭvā vandamānam tu sītā śaśi nibha ānanā

SYNONYMS

sītā: Seetha | śaśinibhānanā: with her countenance resmbling the moon | dṛṣṭvā: seeing | tam: him | vandamānam: saluting her | ucchvasya: sighed | dīrgham: deeply | abravīt: and spoke | vānaram: to Hanuma | madhura svarā: in a sweet-sounding voice (as follows): |

TRANSLATION

Seetha, with her countenance resembling the moon, seeing Hanuma saluting her, had a deep sigh and spoke to Hanuma in a sweet-sounding voice (as follows)

VERSE 14

मायाम् प्रविष्टो मायावी यदि त्वम् रावणः स्वयम्

māyām praviṣṭo māyāvī yadi tvam rāvaṇaḥ svayam

SYNONYMS

tvam rāvaṇaḥ yadi: If you are Ravana | praviṣṭaḥ: who made use of | māyām: an illusive guise | svayam: and yourself | māyāvī: a conjurer | utpādayasi: you are causing | bhūyaḥ: a further | samtāpam: agony | me: to me | tat: that | na śobhanam: is not good. |

TRANSLATION

"If you are Ravana, who made use of an illusive guise and yourself a conjurer, you are causing me a further agony. It is no good."

VERSE 15

स्वम् परित्यज्य रूपम् यः परिव्राजक रूपधृत्

svam parityajya rūpam yaḥ parivrājaka rūpadhṛt

SYNONYMS

yaḥ rāvaṇaḥ: which Ravana | parityajya: leaving | svam: ruupam = his real form | dṛṣṭaḥ: was seen | mayā: by me | parivrājakarūpavān: in the guise of a vagrant religious mendicant | janasthāne: in Janasthana | sa eva: that Ravana indeed | tvam asi: you are. |

TRANSLATION

'You are indeed the same Ravana, who, abandoning your real form, appeared to me in the guise of a vagrant religious mendicant in Janasthana."

VERSE 16

उपवास कृशाम् दीनाम् काम रूप निशा चर

upavāsa kṛśām dīnām kāma rūpa niśā cara

SYNONYMS

niśācara: O demon | kāmarūpa: who can assume any form at will! | tat: It | śobhanam na: is not good | santāpayasi samtāpam: that you are causing any | bhūyaḥ: again | mām: to me | upavāsakṛśām: who is emaciated by fasting | dīnām: and very miserable. |

TRANSLATION

"O demon who can assume any form at your will! It is no good that again you are causing agony to me, emaciated because of fasting and feeling very miserable."

VERSE 17

अथवा नैतदेवं हि यन्मया परिशङ्कितम्

athavā naitadevaṃ hi yanmayā pariśaṅkitam

SYNONYMS

athavā: otherwise | yat: whatever | pariśaṅkitam: is suspected | mayā: by me | etat: that | na hi: is not indeed | evam: so | mama manasaḥ: in my mind | prītiḥ: a pleasurable sensation | utpannā hi: occurred indeed | tava darśanāt: by reason of your audience. |

TRANSLATION

"Otherwise, whatever is suspected by me is not indeed true because in my mind, a pleasurable sensation indeed occurred by reason of your audience."

VERSE 18

यदि रामस्य दूतः त्वम् आगतो भद्रम् अस्तु ते

yadi rāmasya dūtaḥ tvam āgato bhadram astu te

SYNONYMS

tvam āgataḥ yadi: if you have come | rāmasya dūtaḥ: as Rama's messenger | astu te: may you be | bhadram: blessed | hariśreṣṭha: O | me: to me | rāma kathā: Rama's anecdote | piyā hi: is indeed pleasurable | pṛcchāmi: (hence) I am asking | tvām: you (to narrate it). |

TRANSLATION

"If you have come as Rama's messenger, may you be blessed! O the best of monkeys! Rama's anecdote is very pleasurable for me. Hence, I am requesting you to narrate it."

VERSE 19

गुणान् रामस्य कथय प्रियस्य मम वानर

guṇān rāmasya kathaya priyasya mama vānara

SYNONYMS

vānara: O monkeys! | kathaya: Narrate | guṇān: the qualities | prīyasya rāmasya: of my beloved Rama | saumya: O gentle one! | harasi: you are eroding | me cittam: my mind | rayaḥ yathā: as a rapid course of steram nadii kuulam = (erodes) a river-bank. |

TRANSLATION

"O monkey! Narrate the qualities of my beloved Rama. O gentle one! You are eroding my mind as a rapid course of stream erodes a river bank."

VERSE 20

अहो स्वप्नस्य सुखता या अहम् एवम् चिर आहृता

aho svapnasya sukhatā yā aham evam cira āhṛtā

SYNONYMS

yā ham: I | cirāhṛtā: was taken away long ago | paśyāmi: is seeing | vanaukasam: a monkey | preṣitam nām: sent | rāghavaṇa: by Rama | evam: in this way | aho: Alas! | sukhatā: how delightful | sapnasya: of this dream!. |

TRANSLATION

"I, who was taken away long ago, is seeing a monkey sent by Rama in this way. Alas! How delightful this dream is!'

VERSE 21

स्वप्ने।अपि यद्यहम् वीरं राघवम् सहलक्ष्मणम्

svapne|api yadyaham vīraṃ rāghavam sahalakṣmaṇam

SYNONYMS

aham paśyeyam yadi: If I have seen | rāghavam: Rama | vīram: the eminent man | saha lakṣmaṇam: along with Lakshmana | na avasīdeyam: I would not have disheartened | mama: in my case | svapno'pi: even the dream | matsarī: is wicked. |

TRANSLATION

"If I have seen the eminent Rama together with Lakshmana, I would not have disheartened. In my case, even my dream is wicked!"

VERSE 22

न अहम् स्वप्नम् इमम् मन्ये स्वप्ने दृष्ट्वा हि वानरम्

na aham svapnam imam manye svapne dṛṣṭvā hi vānaram

SYNONYMS

aham: I | na manye: do not deem | imam: it | svapnam: as a dream | dṛṣṭvā: seeing | vānaram: a monkey | svapne: in a dream | na śakyaḥ: is not fit | prāptum: to get | abhyudayam: prosperity | abhyudayaḥ: (But) prosperity | prāptaśca: has come | mama: to me. |

TRANSLATION

"I do not deem it as a dream. Seeing a monkey in a dream does not bring about prosperity But prosperity has come to me!"

VERSE 23

किम् नु स्याच् चित्त मोहो अयम् भवेत् वात गतिः तु इयम्

kim nu syāc citta moho ayam bhavet vāta gatiḥ tu iyam

SYNONYMS

syāt kim nu: how possibly | ayam: is it | citta mohaḥ: a delusion of my mind? iyan bhavet = is it the impending | vātagatiḥ: course of a flatulence? vikaarovaa = or change of mental condition | unmādaja: born out of madness? | syātiyam: is it a looming | mṛgatṛṣṇikā: mirage? |

TRANSLATION

"How possibly is it a delusion of my mind? Is it an impending course of flatulence or changing mental condition of madness? Is it a looming mirage?"

VERSE 24

अथवा न अयम् उन्मादो मोहो अपि उन्माद लक्ष्मणः

athavā na ayam unmādo moho api unmāda lakṣmaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

athavā: Otherwise | ayam: It | na unmādaḥ: is neither a madness | moho'pi: nor even a delusion | unmāda lakṣaṇaḥ: which is a symptom of madness | aham: I | sambudhye: am knowing | ātmānam: about myself | imam vanonkasam: and this monkey. |

TRANSLATION

"Otherwise, it is neither madness nor even a delusion, which is a symptom of madness. Because I am knowing about myself as also about this monkey."

VERSE 25

इति एवम् बहुधा सीता सम्प्रधार्य बल अबलम्

iti evam bahudhā sītā sampradhārya bala abalam

SYNONYMS

ityevam: thus | sampradhārya: deliberating upon | balābalam: the strengths and weaknesses | bahudhā: in several ways | sīta: Seetha | mane: thought | tam: him | rākṣasādhipam: as Ravana | kāmarūpatvāt: as they can change their forms at will. |

TRANSLATION

Thus deliberating upon the strengths and weaknesses in several ways, Seetha finally imagined him to be Ravana, as demons can change their forms at will.

VERSE 26

एताम् बुद्धिम् तदा कृत्वा सीता सा तनु मध्यमा

etām buddhim tadā kṛtvā sītā sā tanu madhyamā

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | : that | tanumadhyamā: slender waisted | sītā: Seetha | janakātmajā: the daughter of Janaka | etām buddhim kṛtvā: thus having made up her mind | na prativyājahāra: did not reply in return | vānaram: to Hanuma | atha: thereafter. |

TRANSLATION

Then, that slender waisted Seetha, the daughter of Janaka, thus having made up her mind, did not reply in return anything further to Hanuman.

VERSE 27

सीतायाः चिन्तितम् बुद्ध्वा हनूमान् मारुत आत्मजः

sītāyāḥ cintitam buddhvā hanūmān māruta ātmajaḥ

SYNONYMS

buddhvā: understanding | cintitam: the contemplation | sītāyāḥ: of Seetha | hanumān: Hanuma | mārutātmajaḥ: the son of wind-god | tadā: then | sampraharṣayat: brought about a great joy | tām: in her | vacanaiḥ: with his words | śrotrānukūlaiḥ: favourable to her ears. |

TRANSLATION

Understanding the contemplation of Seetha, Hanuma the son of wind-god then brought about a great joy in her with his words most favourable to her ears (as follows):

VERSE 28

आदित्य इव तेजस्वी लोक कान्तः शशी यथा

āditya iva tejasvī loka kāntaḥ śaśī yathā

SYNONYMS

29| tejasvī: (Rama) has a great splendour | āditya iva: like that of the sun | loka kāntaḥ: pleasing to all | śasīyathā: like the moon | rājā: lord | sarvasya: to the entire | lokasya: world | devo vaiśravaṇo yathā: like Kubera the lord of wealth | mahāyaśāḥ: greatly renowned | viṣṇuḥ yathā: like Vishnu | upapannaśca: and endowed with | vikrameṇa: valour. |

TRANSLATION

"Rama has a great splendour like that of the sun. He is pleasing to all like the moon. As Kubera the Lord of wealth, he is a lord to the entire world. Like Vishnu, he is greatly renowned and endowed with valour."

VERSE 30

सत्य वादी मधुर वाग् देवो वाचस्पतिः यथा
रूपवान् सुभगः श्रीमान् कन्दर्प इव मूर्तिमान्

satya vādī madhura vāg devo vācaspatiḥ yathā
rūpavān subhagaḥ śrīmān kandarpa iva mūrtimān

SYNONYMS

satyavādī: (Rama) is a speaker of truth | devaḥ vācaspatiryathā: like lord Brihaspati | madhuravāk: he has a sweet voice | rūpavān: a handsome man | subhagaḥ: possessing good fortune | śrīmān: and royal dignity | kandaraḥ iva: He is like Manmadha | mūrtimān: personified himself. |

TRANSLATION

"Rama is a speaker of truth. Like Lord Brihaspati, he has a sweet voice. He is a handsome man, possessing good fortune and a royal dignity. He is a personified Manmadha, the lord of love."

VERSE 31

स्थान क्रोध प्रहर्ता च श्रेष्ठो लोके महारथः
बाहुच् चायाम् अवष्टब्धो यस्य लोको महात्मनः

sthāna krodha prahartā ca śreṣṭho loke mahārathaḥ
bāhuc cāyām avaṣṭabdho yasya loko mahātmanaḥ

SYNONYMS

sthāna krodhaḥ: (Rama) gets anger at the right time | prahartāca: He strikes a befitting person | śreṣṭhaḥ: he is an excellent | mahārathaḥ: chariot-warrior | yasya: in which | bāhu cchāyām: shelter of arms | mahātmanaḥ: of the high-souled man | lokaḥ: the world | avasṭabdhaḥ: is resting on. |

TRANSLATION

"Rama gets anger only at right time. He strikes a befitting person at a right time. He is an excellent chariot-warrior. The world is resting under the shelter of arms of this high souled man."

VERSE 32

अपकृश्ष्य आश्रम पदान् मृग रूपेण राघवम्
शून्ये येन अपनीता असि तस्य द्रक्ष्यसि यत्
फलम्

apakṛśṣya āśrama padān mṛga rūpeṇa rāghavam
śūnye yena apanītā asi tasya drakṣyasi yat
phalam

SYNONYMS

yena: by which Ravana | mṛgarūpeṇa: by means of an illusory antelope | rāghavam: Rama | apakṛṣya: was taken far away | apranītā asi: you were stolen | śūnye āśram padāt: from a deserted hermitage | yat: which | phalam: consequence | tasya: to such Ravana | drakṣyasi: you will see (later). |

TRANSLATION

"Showing an illusory antelope, Ravana detracted Rama and took you away from a deserted hermitage. You will see later, the consequence Ravana will get for this act."

VERSE 33

नचिरात् रावणम् सम्ख्ये यो वधिष्यति वीर्यवान्
रोष प्रमुक्तैः इषुभिः ज्वलद्भिः इव
पावकैः

nacirāt rāvaṇam samkhye yo vadhiṣyati vīryavān
roṣa pramuktaiḥ iṣubhiḥ jvaladbhiḥ iva
pāvakaiḥ

SYNONYMS

34| yaḥ vīryavān: which valiant Rama | acirāt: soon | vadhiṣyati: is going to kill | rāvaṇam: Ravana | samkhye: in battle | iṣubhiḥ: with arrows | jvaladbhiḥ: strongly shining | pāvakaiḥ iva: like sparkles | roṣa pramuktaiḥ: released with anger | tena: by the same Rama | preṣitaḥ: I was sent | iha: here | dūtaḥ: as a messenger | āgataḥ: and I came | tvatsakāśam: to your presence | saḥ: that Rama | duḥkhārtaḥ: pained with grief | tvadviyogena: by your separation | abravīt: enquired | tvām kauśalam: about your welfare. |

TRANSLATION

"Which valiant Rama with arrows strongly shining like sparkles released with anger, by the same Rama I was sent here as a messenger and I arrived at your presence. That Rama, agonised by your separation wishes to enquire of your welfare."

VERSE 35

लक्ष्मणः च महातेजाः सुमित्र आनन्द वर्धनः
अभिवाद्य महाबाहुः सो अपि कौशलम् अब्रवीत्

lakṣmaṇaḥ ca mahātejāḥ sumitra ānanda vardhanaḥ
abhivādya mahābāhuḥ so api kauśalam abravīt

SYNONYMS

saḥ lakṣmaṇaśca: that Lakshmana too | mahā tejāḥ: having a great splendour | sumitrā nanda vardhanaḥ: who augments the happiness of Sumitra his mother | mahā bāhuḥ: and having long arms | abhivādya: saluted | tvām: you | abravīt: and enquired | kauśalam: about your welfare. |

TRANSLATION

"That long-armed Lakshmana too, having a great splendour and who augments the happiness of Sumitra his mother, saluted you and enquired about your welfare."

VERSE 36

रामस्य च सखा देवि सुग्रीवो नाम वानरः
राजा वानर मुख्यानाम् स त्वाम् कौशलम् अब्रवीत्

rāmasya ca sakhā devi sugrīvo nāma vānaraḥ
rājā vānara mukhyānām sa tvām kauśalam abravīt

SYNONYMS

devī: O Princess! saH vaanaraH = that monkey | sugrīvonāma: named Sugreeva | sakhā: a companion | rāmasya: of Rama | rājā: and the king | vānara mukhyānām: of the excellent monkeys | abravīt: asked | tvām kauśalam: about your welfare. |

TRANSLATION

"O princess! That monkey called Sugreeva, a companion of Rama and the king of the excellent monkeys, asked about your welfare."

VERSE 37

नित्यम् स्मरति रामः त्वाम् ससुग्रीवः सलक्ष्मणः
दिष्ट्या जीवसि वैदेहि राक्षसी वशम्
आगता

nityam smarati rāmaḥ tvām sasugrīvaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ
diṣṭyā jīvasi vaidehi rākṣasī vaśam
āgatā

SYNONYMS

rāmaḥ: Rama | sa sugrīvaḥ: together with Sugreeva | sa lakṣmaṇaḥ: along with Lakshmana | nityam: is always | smarati: recollecting | tvām: you | vaidehi: O Seetha! | āgatā: (eventhough) coming into | rākṣasīvaśam: the power of female-demons | jīvasi: you are surviving | diṣṭyā: by your good luck. |

TRANSLATION

"Rama, together with Sugreeva and Lakshmana, is always recollecting you. O Seetha! Eventhough coming into the control female-demons, you are somehow surviving by your good luck!"

VERSE 38

नचिरात् द्रक्ष्यसे रामम् लक्ष्मणम् च महारथम्
मध्ये वानर कोटीनाम् सुग्रीवम् च अमित
ओजसम्

nacirāt drakṣyase rāmam lakṣmaṇam ca mahāratham
madhye vānara koṭīnām sugrīvam ca amita
ojasam

SYNONYMS

na cirāt: within a few days | drakṣyase: you will see | rāmam: Rama | mahābalam: the mighty | lakṣmaṇam: lakshmana | amitaujasam: and the highly splendorous | sugrīvam ca: Sugreeva | madhye: in the presence of | vānarakoṭīnām: crores of monkeys. |

TRANSLATION

"Within a few days, you will see Rama, the mighty Lakshmana and the highly splendorous Sugreeva, in the presence of crores of monkeys."

VERSE 39

अहम् सुग्रीव सचिवो हनूमान् नाम वानरः
प्रविष्टो नगरीम् लन्काम् लन्घयित्वा महाउदधिम्

aham sugrīva sacivo hanūmān nāma vānaraḥ
praviṣṭo nagarīm lankām langhayitvā mahāudadhim

SYNONYMS

aham: I | vānaraḥ: am a monkey | sugrīva sacivaḥ: the minister of Sugreeva | humān nāmaḥ: named Hanuma | praviṣṭaḥ: I entered | laṅkām nagarīm: the City of Lanka | laṅghayitva: by traversing | mahodadhim: the great ocean. |

TRANSLATION

"I am a monkey, the minister of Sugreeva, called Hanuma. I entered the city of Lanka, by traversing the great ocean."

VERSE 40

कृत्वा मूर्ध्नि पद न्यासम् रावणस्य दुरात्मनः
त्वाम् द्रष्टुम् उपयातो अहम् समाश्रित्य पराक्रमम्

kṛtvā mūrdhni pada nyāsam rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ
tvām draṣṭum upayāto aham samāśritya parākramam

SYNONYMS

samāśritya: asserting | parākramam: my strength | kṛtvā pajñāsam: and putting down my feet | mūrdhni: on the head | durātmanaḥ rāvaṇaḥ: of the evil-minded Ravana | aham: I | upayātaḥ: have come | draṣṭum: to see | tvām: you. |

TRANSLATION

"Asserting my strength and putting down my feet on the head of the evil minded Ravana, I have come to see you."

VERSE 41

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे चतुस्त्रिंशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye sundarakāṇḍe catustriṃśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

devi: O princess! | yathā: As | avagacchasi: you comprehend | mām: about me | aham: I | na asmi: am not | tathā: so | tyajyatām eṣā viśaṇkā: let this suspicion be given up | śraddhatsva: believe | mama: me | vadataḥ: who is saying. |

TRANSLATION

"O Princess! I am not so, as you comprehend me (as Ravana). Let your suspicion be given up. Believe me as I say it."
