VERSE 1

ततः तु शिंशपा मूले जानकीम् पर्यवस्थिताम्
अभिवाद्य अब्रवीत् दिष्ट्या पश्यामि त्वाम् इह अक्षताम्

tataḥ tu śiṃśapā mūle jānakīm paryavasthitām
abhivādya abravīt diṣṭyā paśyāmi tvām iha akṣatām

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | abhivādya: having offered is salutation | jānakīm: to Seetha | paryupasthitām: who was present | śimśupāmūle: at the foot of Ashoka tree | abravīt: spoke (as follows) | diṣṭyā: thank Heaven! | paśyāmi: I am seeing | tvām: you | iha: here | akṣatām: uninjured. |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, having offered his salutation to Seetha, who was present at the foot of Ashoka tree, Hanuma spoke: "Thank heaven! I am seeing you uninjured here!"

VERSE 2

ततः तम् प्रस्थितम् सीता वीक्षमाणा पुनः पुनः
भर्तृ स्नेह अन्वितम् वाक्यम् हनूमन्तम् अभाषत

tataḥ tam prasthitam sītā vīkṣamāṇā punaḥ punaḥ
bhartṛ sneha anvitam vākyam hanūmantam abhāṣata

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | punaḥ punaḥ: again and again | vīkṣamāṇā: beholding | tam hanūmantam: that Hanuma | prasthitam: starting out (for his return-journey) | sītā: Seetha | abhāṣata: spoke | vākyam: (the following) words | bhartṛsnehānvitam: endowed with affection towards her husband. |

TRANSLATION

Then, beholding again and again, that Hanuma, who had made ready for his return journey, Seetha spoke the following words, filled with affection towards her husband.

VERSE 3

कामम् अस्य त्वम् एव एकः कार्यस्य परिसाधने
पर्याप्तः पर वीरघ्न यशस्यः ते बल उदयः

kāmam asya tvam eva ekaḥ kāryasya parisādhane
paryāptaḥ para vīraghna yaśasyaḥ te bala udayaḥ

SYNONYMS

paravīraghna: O Hanuma | kāmam: surely | tvam: you | ekaḥ: alone | paryāptaḥ: are enough | parisādhane: in achievement | asya kāryasya: of this task | te: your | balodayaḥ: elevated energy | yaśasya: is creditable. |

TRANSLATION

"O Hanuma, the annihilator of enemies! You are yourself surely sufficient single-handed completion of this task. Your elevated energy is creditable indeed.

VERSE 4

शरैस्तुः सम्कुलाम् कृत्वा लन्काम् पर बल अर्दनः
माम् नयेत् यदि काकुत्स्थः तस्य तत् सादृशम् भवेत्

śaraistuḥ samkulām kṛtvā lankām para bala ardanaḥ
mām nayet yadi kākutsthaḥ tasya tat sādṛśam bhavet

SYNONYMS

tu: but | tat bhavet: it will be | sadṛśam: appropriate | tasya kākutthasaḥ: of him Rama | parabalārdanaḥ: who destroys the army of adversaries | nayedyadi: if he takes | mām: me | kṛtvā: after making | laṅkām: Lanka | samkulām: upset | śaraiḥ: with his arrows. |

TRANSLATION

"But, it will be appropriate for Rama, who destroys the hostile forces, to take me with him, after routing Lanka with his arrows."

VERSE 5

तत् यथा तस्य विक्रान्तम् अनुरूपम् महात्मनः
भवति आहव शूरस्य तत्त्वम् एव उपपादय

tat yathā tasya vikrāntam anurūpam mahātmanaḥ
bhavati āhava śūrasya tattvam eva upapādaya

SYNONYMS

tat: therefore | tva: you | upapādaya: act | yathā tathā bhavati: in such a way that | mahātmanaḥ: the high-souled Rama | āhavaśūrasya: valiant in battle | vikrāntam: (may exhibit) prowess | tasya anurūpam: worthy of him. |

TRANSLATION

"Therefore, you act in such a way that the high-souled Rama, valiant in battle, may exhibit prowess worthy of him."

VERSE 6

तत् अर्थ उपहितम् वाक्यम् प्रश्रितम् हेतु सम्हितम्
निशम्य हनुमान् तस्या वाक्यम् उत्तरम् अब्रवीत्

tat artha upahitam vākyam praśritam hetu samhitam
niśamya hanumān tasyā vākyam uttaram abravīt

SYNONYMS

niśamya: hearing | tat: those | vākyam: (the following) words | praśritam: which were humble | hetusamhitam: endowed with reason | arthopahitam: and meaningful | tasyāḥ: of her | hanumān: Hanuma | abravīt: spoke | uttaram: in reply. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those humble, reasonable and meaningful words of Seetha, Hanuma spoke the following words in reply.

VERSE 7

क्षिप्रम् एष्यति काकुत्स्थो हरि ऋक्ष प्रवरैः वृतः
यः ते युधि विजित्य अरीन् शोकम् व्यपनयिष्यति

kṣipram eṣyati kākutstho hari ṛkṣa pravaraiḥ vṛtaḥ
yaḥ te yudhi vijitya arīn śokam vyapanayiṣyati

SYNONYMS

kākuthsaḥ: Rama | vṛtaḥ: surrounded | haryṛṣapravaraiḥ: with leaders of monkeys and bears | eṣyati: will come | kṣipram: immediately | yaḥ: who | vijitya: after conquering | arīn: the enemies | yudhi: in battle | vyapanayiṣyati: will take away | te: your | śokam: grief. |

TRANSLATION

"Rama, accompanied by the leaders of monkeys and bears, will come soon and after conquering the enemies in battle, will take away your grief."

VERSE 8

एवम् आश्वास्य वैदेहीम् हनूमान् मारुत् आत्मजः
गमनाय मतिम् कृत्वा वैदेहीम् अभ्यवादयत्

evam āśvāsya vaidehīm hanūmān mārut ātmajaḥ
gamanāya matim kṛtvā vaidehīm abhyavādayat

SYNONYMS

hanumān: Hanuma | mārutātmajah: the son of wind-god | evam: thus | āśvāsya: consoling | vaidehīm: Seetha | kṛtvā: and making up | matim: his mind | gamanāya: to go | vaidehīm abhyavādayat: saluted Seetha with reverence. |

TRANSLATION

Hanuma, the son of wind-god, thus consoling Seetha and making up his mind to go, saluted Seetha with reverence.

VERSE 9

ततः स कपि शार्दूलः स्वामि संदर्शन उत्सुकः
आरुरोह गिरि श्रेष्ठम् अरिष्टम् अरि मर्दनः

tataḥ sa kapi śārdūlaḥ svāmi saṃdarśana utsukaḥ
āruroha giri śreṣṭham ariṣṭam ari mardanaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | saḥ: that | kapiśārdūlaḥ: Hanuma the foremost among the monkeys | arimardanah: the annihilator of enemies | svāmi samdarśanotsukaḥ: with an anxious desire to see his lord | āruroha: ascended | giriśreṣṭham: (that) mountain of excellence | ariṣṭham: called Arishta. |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, that Hanuma the foremost among the monkeys, and the annihilator of enemies, with an anxious desire to see his lord, ascended the Mount Arishta of excellence.

VERSE 10

तुन्ग पद्मक जुष्टाभिः नीलाभिः वन राजिभिः
सोत्तरीयमिवाम्भोदैः शृम्गान्तरविलम्बिभिः

tunga padmaka juṣṭābhiḥ nīlābhiḥ vana rājibhiḥ
sottarīyamivāmbhodaiḥ śṛmgāntaravilambibhiḥ

SYNONYMS

nīlābhiḥ: (that mountain) was covered as it were | vanarājibhiḥ: rows of gardens | tuṅgapadmakajuṣṭābhiḥ: inhabited by towering elephants with red spots on their skin | ambhodaiḥ: with clouds | śṛṇgāntaravilambibhiḥ: hanging between its summits | sottarīyamiva: as with an upper garment. |

TRANSLATION

That mountain was covered as it were with dark green rows of gardens inhabited by towery elephants with red spots on their skin and with its clouds hanging between its summits, as with an upper garment.

VERSE 11

बोध्यमानमिव प्रीत्या दिवाकरकरैः शुभैः
उन्मिषन्तिमिवोद्धूतैर्लोचनैरिव धातुभिः

bodhyamānamiva prītyā divākarakaraiḥ śubhaiḥ
unmiṣantimivoddhūtairlocanairiva dhātubhiḥ

SYNONYMS

dhātubhiḥ: by metals | uddhūtaiḥ: scattered here and there | locanairiva: looking like eyes | unmiṣantamiva: drawing up the eye = lids | bodhyamānamiva: looked like being awakened as it were | prītyā: with love | śubhaiḥ divākarakaraiḥ: by the bright rays of the sun. |

TRANSLATION

By metals scattered here and there, looking like eyes drawing up the eye-lids, the mountain looked like being awakened, as it were, with love by the bright rays of the sun.

VERSE 12

तोयौघनिस्वनैर्मन्द्रैः प्राधीतमिव पर्वतम्
प्रगीतमिव विस्पष्टैर्नानाप्रस्रवणस्व्नै

toyaughanisvanairmandraiḥ prādhītamiva parvatam
pragītamiva vispaṣṭairnānāprasravaṇasvnai

SYNONYMS

parvatam: the mountain | prādhītamiva: looked like the one who has started reciting the scriptures | vispaṣṭaiḥ: clearly | mandraiḥ toyaughanisvanaiḥ: in the form of the deep sound of running streams of water | pragītamiva: singing as it were at a high pitch | nānā prasravaṇasvanaiḥ: in the form of roaring sound of various cascades. |

TRANSLATION

The mountain looked resembling the one which has started reciting the scriptures clearly in the form of the deep sound of running streams of water, singing as it were at a high pitch, in the form of roaring sound of various cascades.

VERSE 13

देवदारुभिरत्युच्चैरूर्ध्वबाहुमिव स्थितम्
प्रपातजलनिर्घोषैः प्राकृष्टमिव सर्वतः

devadārubhiratyuccairūrdhvabāhumiva sthitam
prapātajalanirghoṣaiḥ prākṛṣṭamiva sarvataḥ

SYNONYMS

sthitam: (the mountain) stood | ūrdhvabāhum iva: as it were with uplifted arms | atyuccaiḥ devadārubhiḥ: in the form of very high deodars | prākṛṣṭamiva: and which started crying loudly as it were | sarvataḥ: on all sides | prapātajalanirghoṣaiḥ: on all sides | prapātajala nirghoṣaiḥ: in the form of the sound of its cascades. |

TRANSLATION

The mountain stood as it were with uplifted arms in the form of very lofty deodars and which started crying loudly as it were, on all sides, in the form of the sound of its cascades.

VERSE 14

वेपमानमिव श्यामैः कम्पमानैः शरद्वनैः
वेणुभिर्मारुतोद्धूतैः कूजन्तमिव कीचकैः

vepamānamiva śyāmaiḥ kampamānaiḥ śaradvanaiḥ
veṇubhirmārutoddhūtaiḥ kūjantamiva kīcakaiḥ

SYNONYMS

vepamānamiva: (The mountain) seemed to be trembling | kampamānaiḥ: in the form of waving | śāmaiḥ: dark | śaradvanaiḥ: antomnal groves | veṇubhiḥ: which was piping as it were | kīcakaiḥ: in the form of hollow bamboos | mārutoddhūtaiḥ: shaken up by the wind | kūjantamiva: and as though whistling. |

TRANSLATION

The mountain seemed to be trembling in the form of waving dark automnal groves, which was piping as it were, in the form of hollow bamboos shaken up by the wind and whistling.

VERSE 15

निःश्वसन्तमिवामर्षाद्घोरैराशीविषोत्तमैः
वीहारकृतगम्भीरैर्ध्यायन्तमिव गह्वरैः

niḥśvasantamivāmarṣādghorairāśīviṣottamaiḥ
vīhārakṛtagambhīrairdhyāyantamiva gahvaraiḥ

SYNONYMS

niḥ śvasantamiva: (the mountain) was hissing as it were with fury | āśīviṣottamaiḥ: in the form of its terrible and most poisonous snakes | dhyāyantamiva: which sat absorbed in meditation as it were | guhvaraiḥ: in the form of its caves | nīhāra kṛta gambhīraiḥ: which were deep and covered with mist. |

TRANSLATION

The mountain was hissing as it were with fury, in the form of its terrible and most poisonous snakes and which sat absorbed in meditation as it were, in the form of its deep caves covered with mist.

VERSE 16

मेघपादनिभैः पादैः प्रक्रान्तमिव सर्वतः
जृम्भमाणमिवाकाशे शिखरैरभ्रामालिभिः

meghapādanibhaiḥ pādaiḥ prakrāntamiva sarvataḥ
jṛmbhamāṇamivākāśe śikharairabhrāmālibhiḥ

SYNONYMS

prakrāntamiva: (the mountain) seems to be setting out on a journey | sarvataḥ: on all four sides | pādaiḥ: with the feet of that mountain | meghapādanibhaiḥ: looking like rising clouds | śikharaiḥ: which with its peaks | abhra mālibhiḥ: having a lining of clouds | jṛmbhamāṇamiva: seemed to stretch its limbs | ākāśe: in the sky. |

TRANSLATION

The mountain seems to be setting out on a journey on all four sides, with feet of the mountain, looking like rising clouds, which with its peaks having a lining of clouds, seemed to stretch its limbs in the sky.

VERSE 17

कूटैश्च बहुधा कीर्णै शोभितम् बहुकन्दरैः
साल ताल अश्व कर्णैः च वंशैः च बहुभिः वृतम्

kūṭaiśca bahudhā kīrṇai śobhitam bahukandaraiḥ
sāla tāla aśva karṇaiḥ ca vaṃśaiḥ ca bahubhiḥ vṛtam

SYNONYMS

(ṭhe mountain) śobhitam: was embellished with | kūṭaiśca: number of summits | bahukandaraiḥ: and adorned with numerous caves | bahudhākīrṇaiḥ: scattered at many places | vṛtam: and endowed with | bahubhiḥ: many | sāla tālāśvakarṇaiśca: sal |

TRANSLATION

The mountain was embellished with a number of summits and adorned with numerous caves scattered at many places and endowed with many sal, palmyrah, karna and bamboo trees.

VERSE 18

लतावितानैर्विततैः प्ष्पवद्भिरलम्कृतम्
नानामृगगणाकीर्णम् धातुनिष्यन्दभूषितम्

latāvitānairvitataiḥ pṣpavadbhiralamkṛtam
nānāmṛgagaṇākīrṇam dhātuniṣyandabhūṣitam

SYNONYMS

alamkṛtam: was adorned | latāvitānaiḥ: with clusters of creepers | vitataiḥ puṣpavadbhiḥ: having plenty of flowers | nāā mṛgagaṇākīrṇam: filled with many troops of animals | dhātuniṣyanda bhūṣitam: and embellished with gushes of liquid minerals. |

TRANSLATION

The mountain was adorned with clusters of creepers having plenty of flowers, filled with a number of summits and adorned with numerous caves scattered at many places and endowed with many sal, palmyrah, karna and bamboo trees.

VERSE 19

बहुप्रस्रवणोपेतम् शिलासंचयसम्कटम्
महर्षियक्षगन्धर्वकिन्नरोरगसेवितम्

bahuprasravaṇopetam śilāsaṃcayasamkaṭam
maharṣiyakṣagandharvakinnaroragasevitam

SYNONYMS

bahuprasravaṇopetam: was endowed with many cascades | śilāsamcaya samkaṭam: crowded together with heaps of rocks | maharṣiyakṣagandharava kinnaroragasevitam: and frequented by great sages |

TRANSLATION

The mountain was endowed with many cascades, crowded together with heaps of rocks and frequented by great sages, Yakshas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras and celestial serpents.

VERSE 20

लतापादपसम्घातम् सिम्हाध्युषितकन्दरम्
व्याग्रसम्घसमाकीर्णम् स्वादुमूलफलद्रुमम्

latāpādapasamghātam simhādhyuṣitakandaram
vyāgrasamghasamākīrṇam svādumūlaphaladrumam

SYNONYMS

latāpāda samghātam: was exquisite with creepers and trees | simhādhyuṣia kandaram: having caves inhabited by lions | vyāghrasamghasamākīrṇam: filled with a number of tigers | svādumūla phala drumam: and having sweet roots and fruit-trees. |

TRANSLATION

The mountain was exquisite with creepers and trees, having caves inhabited by lions, spread over with a number of tigers and endowed with sweet roots and fruit-trees.

VERSE 21

तम् आरुरोह हनुमान् पर्वतम् पवनात्मजः
राम दर्शन शीघ्रेण प्रहर्षेण अभिचोदितः

tam āruroha hanumān parvatam pavanātmajaḥ
rāma darśana śīghreṇa praharṣeṇa abhicoditaḥ

SYNONYMS

hanumān: Hanuma | pavanātmajah: the son of wind-god | rāmadarśana śīghreṇa: in a hurry to see Rama | āruroha: ascended | tamparvatam: that mountain | abhicoditaḥ: excited as he was | praharṣeṇa: with an extreme joy. |

TRANSLATION

Hanuma, the son of wind-god, in a hurry to see Rama, ascended that mountain, excited as he was with an extreme joy.

VERSE 22

तेन पाद तल आक्रान्ता रम्येषु गिरि सानुषु
सघोषाः समशीर्यन्त शिलाः चूर्णी कृताः ततः

tena pāda tala ākrāntā ramyeṣu giri sānuṣu
saghoṣāḥ samaśīryanta śilāḥ cūrṇī kṛtāḥ tataḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | śilāḥ: the rocks | ramyeṣugirisānusu: in the charming table-land of the mountain | tena pāda talākrāntāḥ: on which the soles of his feet lied heavily | sama śīryanta: were crushed | saghoṣāḥ: with sounds | cūrṇīkṛtāḥ: and fallen to pieces. |

TRANSLATION

Then, the rocks in the charming table-land of the mountain, on which the soles of Hanuma lied heavily, were crushed with noise and fallen to pieces.

VERSE 23

स तम् आरुह्य शैल इन्द्रम् व्यवर्धत महाकपिः
दक्षिणात् उत्तरम् पारम् प्रार्थयम्ल् लवण अम्भसः

sa tam āruhya śaila indram vyavardhata mahākapiḥ
dakṣiṇāt uttaram pāram prārthayaml lavaṇa ambhasaḥ

SYNONYMS

prārthayan: desirous (of reaching) | uttaram pāram: the northern shore | dakṣiṇāt: from the southern shore | lavaṇāmbhasaḥ: of the ocean | mahākapiḥ: Hanuma | āruhya: ascending | tam śailendram: that mountain | vyavardhata: enlarged in his body. |

TRANSLATION

Desirous of reaching the northern shore from the southern shore of that ocean, Hanuma ascended that mountain and enlarged his body.

VERSE 24

अधिरुह्य ततो वीरः पर्वतम् पवन आत्मजः
ददर्श सागरम् भीमम् मीन उरग निषेवितम्

adhiruhya tato vīraḥ parvatam pavana ātmajaḥ
dadarśa sāgaram bhīmam mīna uraga niṣevitam

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | vīraḥ: the valiant | pavanātmajaḥ: Hanuma | adhirūhya: ascending | parvatam: the mountain | dadarśa: saw | bhīmam: the terrific | sāgaram: ocean | mīnoraganiṣevitam: inhabited by fishes and water-snakes. |

TRANSLATION

Then, the valiant Hanuma after ascending the mountain, saw the terrific ocean inhabited by fishes and water-snakes.

VERSE 25

स मारुत इव आकाशम् मारुतस्य आत्म सम्भवः
प्रपेदे हरि शार्दूलो दक्षिणात् उत्तराम् दिशम्

sa māruta iva ākāśam mārutasya ātma sambhavaḥ
prapede hari śārdūlo dakṣiṇāt uttarām diśam

SYNONYMS

saḥ hariśārdūlaḥ: that foremost among the monkeys | ātmasambhavaḥ: the son | mārutasya: of the wind-god | prapede: entered | ākāśam: the sky | uttarām diśam: towards northern direction | dakṣiṇāt: from southern direction | mārutaḥ iva: like a wind. |

TRANSLATION

Hanuma, the foremost among the monkeys and the son of the wind-god, entered the sky towards northern direction, like a wind, from southern direction.

VERSE 26

स तदा पीडितः तेन कपिना पर्वत उत्तमः
ररास सह तैः भूतैः प्राविशत् वसुधा तलम्

sa tadā pīḍitaḥ tena kapinā parvata uttamaḥ
rarāsa saha taiḥ bhūtaiḥ prāviśat vasudhā talam

SYNONYMS

pīḍitaḥ: pressed | tadā: then | tena kapinā: by that Hanuma | saḥ parvatottamaḥ: that excellent mountain | praviśan: entering | vasudhātalam: the earth | taiḥ bhūtaiḥ saha: along with the various living beings | rarāsa: made a noise | kampamānaiḥ śikharaiḥ: with its shaking summits | patadbhiḥ drumaiḥ: and toppling trees. |

TRANSLATION

Pressed at that moment by Hanuma, that excellent mountain sank into the bowels of the earth along with the various living beings and made a noise with its shaking summits and toppling trees.

VERSE 27

तस्य ऊरु वेगान् मथिताः पादपाः पुष्प शालिनः

tasya ūru vegān mathitāḥ pādapāḥ puṣpa śālinaḥ

SYNONYMS

mathitāḥ: shaken | ūruvegāt: by the impetus of the thighs | tasya: of that Hanuma | pādapāḥ: trees | puṣpaśālinaḥ: endowed with blossoms | rugṇāḥ: were broken | nipetuḥ: and fell down | bhūtale: on earth | śokrāyudha hatā iva: as struck by a thunder-bolt. |

TRANSLATION

Shaken by the impetus of the thighs of Hanuma, trees in blossom were broken and fell down on earth, as though struck by a thunder-bolt.

VERSE 28

कन्दर उदर संस्थानाम् पीडितानाम् महाओजसाम्

kandara udara saṃsthānām pīḍitānām mahāojasām

SYNONYMS

saḥ bhīmaḥ ninadaḥ: that roaring sound | mahaujasām simhānām: of the lions of great prowess | kandarāntara samsthānām: dwelling in the midst of the caves | pīḍitānām: were tormented | śuśrave: (and that sound) was heard | bhindan: piercing | uabhaḥ: the sky. |

TRANSLATION

When the lions of great prowess dwelling in the midst of caves were tormented and roared terribly, that roaring noise was heard as it was piercing the sky.

VERSE 29

त्रस्त व्याअविद्ध वसना व्याकुली कृत भूषणा

trasta vyāaviddha vasanā vyākulī kṛta bhūṣaṇā

SYNONYMS

vidyādharyaḥ: the females of Vidyadhara class of supernatural beings | trasta vyāviddha vasanāḥ: with their raiments in disorder through fear | vyākulīkṛta bhūṣaṇāḥ: and their ornaments fallen off | samutpetuḥ: went up | sahasā: (all of a sudden | dharaṇīdharāt: from the mountain. |

TRANSLATION

The females of Vidyadhara class of supernatural beings, with their raiments in disorder through fear and their ornaments fallen off, went up all of a sudden from the mountain.

VERSE 30

अतिप्रमाणा बलिनो दीप्त जिह्वा महाविषाः

atipramāṇā balino dīpta jihvā mahāviṣāḥ

SYNONYMS

mahāhayaḥ: large serpents | atipramāṇāḥ: of immense size | dīpta jihvāḥ: having fiery tongues | mahāviṣāh: very poisonous | nipīḍita śirogrīvāḥ: with their hoods and necks severely pressed | vyaceṣṭanta: lay coiled. |

TRANSLATION

Large poisonous serpents of immense size, possessing vigour and having fiery tongues with their hoods and necks severely pressed lay coiled.

VERSE 31

किन्नर उरग गन्धर्व यक्ष विद्या धराः तथा

kinnara uraga gandharva yakṣa vidyā dharāḥ tathā

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | tyaktvā: leaving | tam pīḍitam: that tormented | nagavaram: mountain of excellence | kinnaroragagandharva yakṣavidyādharāḥ: kinnaras | āsthitāḥ: ascended | gaganam: to the sky. |

TRANSLATION

Then, leaving that tormented mountain of excellence; Kinnaras, Nagas, Gadharvas, Yakshas and Vidyadharas ascended to the sky.

VERSE 32

स च भूमि धरः श्रीमान् बलिना तेन पीडितः

sa ca bhūmi dharaḥ śrīmān balinā tena pīḍitaḥ

VERSE 33

दश योजन विस्तारः त्रिंशत् योजनम् उच्छ्रितः

daśa yojana vistāraḥ triṃśat yojanam ucchritaḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ dharādharaḥ: that mountain | daśayojanavistāraḥ: with a width of ten Yojanas (or eighty miles) | trimśat yojanam ucchritaḥ: and height of thirty Yojanas (two hundred and forty miles) | babhūva: became | yātaḥ: completely | samatām: in sameness of level | dharaṇyām: with the earth. |

TRANSLATION

That mountain, with a width of ten yojanas (or eighty miles) and a height of thirty yojanas (or two hundred and forty miles) got level with the earth.

VERSE 34

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे ष्ट्पञ्चाशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye sundarakāṇḍe ṣṭpañcāśaḥ sargaḥ

With a desire to cross easily the terrific ocean, whose shores were being lashed by its waves, which Hanuma jumped up into the air.
