VERSE 1

प्रसक्ताश्रुमुखी त्वेवं ब्रुवती जनकात्मजा
अधोगतमुखी बाला विलप्तुमुपचक्रमे

prasaktāśrumukhī tvevaṃ bruvatī janakātmajā
adhogatamukhī bālā vilaptumupacakrame

SYNONYMS

prasaktāśrumukhī: with a face continually shedding tears | jankātmajā: Seetha | balā: an young woman | evam: thus | bruvatī: speaking | adhogatamukhī: with downward face | upacakrame: started | vilaptum: to weep. |

TRANSLATION

With a face continually shedding tears, Seetha an young woman, thus speaking with a downward face, started to weep.

VERSE 2

उन्मत्तेव प्रमत्तेव भ्रान्तचित्तेव शोचती
उपावृत्ता किशोरीव विवेष्टन्ती महीतले

unmatteva pramatteva bhrāntacitteva śocatī
upāvṛttā kiśorīva viveṣṭantī mahītale

SYNONYMS

unmatteva: like a mad one | pramatteva: like an intoxicated one | bhrāntacitteva: with a deluded mind | śocatī: (Seetha was) crying | kiśorīva: like a female horse | upāvṛttā: rolling on ground | viveṣṭantī: (Seetha) rolled | mahītale: on the ground. |

TRANSLATION

Seetha was crying like a mad one, like an intoxicated one, with a deluded mind. Like a female horse rolling on ground, Seetha rolled on the ground.

VERSE 3

राघवस्य प्रमत्तस्य रक्षसा कामरूपिणा
रावणेन प्रमथ्याहमानीता क्रोशती बलात्

rāghavasya pramattasya rakṣasā kāmarūpiṇā
rāvaṇena pramathyāhamānītā krośatī balāt

SYNONYMS

rāghavasya: (while) Rama | pramattasya: was heedless | aham: I | krośatī: who have been crying | balāt ānītā: (was) forcibly brought | pramathya: overpowered | rakśasā: by the ogre | rāvaṇena: Ravana | kāmarūpiṇā: who can wear desired form. |

TRANSLATION

"While Rama was heedless (taken away by Mareecha), I who have been crying was forcibly brought overpowered by the ogre Ravana who can wear desired form."

VERSE 4

राक्षसीवशमापन्ना भर्त्स्यमाना सुदारुणम्
चिन्तयन्ती सुदुःखार्ता नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे

rākṣasīvaśamāpannā bhartsyamānā sudāruṇam
cintayantī suduḥkhārtā nāhaṃ jīvitumutsahe

SYNONYMS

āpannā: obtaining | rāskasī vaśam: control by ogresses | bartsyamānā: being frightened | sudāruṇam: very horribly | cintayantī: thinking | suduḥkhārtā: being tormented by grief | aham: I | na utsahe: do not desire | jīvitum: to live. |

TRANSLATION

"Being under the control of ogresses, being frightened very horribly, thinking and being tormented by grief, I do not desire to live."

VERSE 5

न हि मे जीविते नार्थो नै वार्थैर्न च भूषणैः
वसन्त्या राक्षसीमध्ये विना रामं
महारथम्

na hi me jīvite nārtho nai vārthairna ca bhūṣaṇaiḥ
vasantyā rākṣasīmadhye vinā rāmaṃ
mahāratham

SYNONYMS

vinā: without | rāmaṃ: Rama | mahāratham: a great car-warrior | vasantyāḥ: living | rākśasī madhye: in the midst of ogresses | arthaḥ na: there is no use | jīvitena: with life | me: to me | na arthaiḥ: not with wealth | na bhuṣaṇaiśca: not with ornaments. |

TRANSLATION

"Without Rama, a great car-warrior, living in the midst of ogresses, there is no use with life to me; not with wealth, not with ornaments."

VERSE 6

अश्मसारमिदं नूनथवाप्यजरामरम्
हृदयं मम येनेदं न दुःखेनावशीर्यते

aśmasāramidaṃ nūnathavāpyajarāmaram
hṛdayaṃ mama yenedaṃ na duḥkhenāvaśīryate

SYNONYMS

athavā: or | mama: my | idam: this | hṛdayam: heart | nūnam: truly | aśmasāram: (is made of) iron | ajarāmaramapi: is undecaying and without death | yena: by what reason | nāvaśīryate: is it not destroying | duḥkhena: with sorrow. |

TRANSLATION

"Or my this heart truly is made of iron. It is undecaying and without death. By what reason is it not destroying with sorrow?"

VERSE 7

धिङ्मामनार्यामसतीं याहं तेन विना कृता
मुहूर्तमपि रक्षामि जीवितं पापजीविता

dhiṅmāmanāryāmasatīṃ yāhaṃ tena vinā kṛtā
muhūrtamapi rakṣāmi jīvitaṃ pāpajīvitā

SYNONYMS

: whoever | aham: I | pāpajīvitā: with a sinful life | kṛtā: made | tena vinā: (to be) without Rama | rakśāmi: protecting | jīvitam: life | muhūrtamapi: even for a moment | mām: to such me | anāryām: who am ignoble | asatīm: who am bad wife | dhik: shame (on me). |

TRANSLATION

"Whoever I with a sinful life made to be without Rama, protecting life even for a moment, to such me who am ignoble, who am bad wife, shame on me."

VERSE 8

का च मे जीविते श्रद्धा सुखे वा तं प्रियं विना
भर्तारं सागरान्ताया वसुधायाः प्रियंवदम्

kā ca me jīvite śraddhā sukhe vā taṃ priyaṃ vinā
bhartāraṃ sāgarāntāyā vasudhāyāḥ priyaṃvadam

SYNONYMS

priyam vinā: without husband Rama | bhartāram: (who is) lord | vasudhāyāḥ: of the earth | sāgarāntāyāḥ: with ocean at the end | priyaṃvadam: a pleasant talker | : what (is) | śradhhā: interest | me: to me | jīvite: in life | sukhe vā: or in comfort. |

TRANSLATION

"Without husband Rama who is the lord of the earth with ocean at the end, a pleasant talker, what is the interest to me in life or in comfort."

VERSE 9

भिद्यतां भक्ष्यतां वापि शरीरं विसृजाम्यहम्
न चाप्यहं चिरं कुःखं सहेयं प्रियवर्जिता

bhidyatāṃ bhakṣyatāṃ vāpi śarīraṃ visṛjāmyaham
na cāpyahaṃ ciraṃ kuḥkhaṃ saheyaṃ priyavarjitā

SYNONYMS

aham: I | visṛjāmi: will leave | śarīram: the body | bhidyatām: let it be split (into pieces) | bhakśyatām vāpi: or let it be eaten | priyavarjitā: without husband | na ca saheyam: will not tolerate | duḥkham: sorrow | ciram: for a long time. |

TRANSLATION

"I will leave the body. Let it be split into pieces or let it be eaten. I without husband will not tolerate sorrow for a long time."

VERSE 10

चरणेनापि सव्येन न स्पृशेयं निशाचरम्
रावणं किं पुनरहं कावयेयं विगर्हतम्

caraṇenāpi savyena na spṛśeyaṃ niśācaram
rāvaṇaṃ kiṃ punarahaṃ kāvayeyaṃ vigarhatam

SYNONYMS

aham: I | na spṛśeyam: will not touch | savyena caraṇenāpi: even with my left foot | rāvaṇam: Ravana | niśācaram: ogre | vigarhitam: of reprehensible conduct | kāmayeyam kiṃ punaḥ: what to say of desiring (him). |

TRANSLATION

"I will not touch even with my left foot Ravana an ogre of reprehensible conduct. What to say of desiring him."

VERSE 11

प्रत्याख्यातं न जानाति नात्मानं नात्मनः कुलम्
यो नृशंसस्वभावेन मां प्रार्थयितुमिच्छति

pratyākhyātaṃ na jānāti nātmānaṃ nātmanaḥ kulam
yo nṛśaṃsasvabhāvena māṃ prārthayitumicchati

SYNONYMS

yaḥ: whoever (Ravana) | nṛśaṃsa svabhāvena: with a cruel nature | icchati: is desiring | prārthayitum: to solicit | mām: me (that Ravana) | na jānāti: does not know | ātmānam: him | pratyākhyātam: to be refused | na: (he does) not (know) | ātmanaḥ: his | kulam: race. |

TRANSLATION

"Whoever Ravana with a cruel nature is desiring to solicit me, that Ravana does not know him to be refused; he does not know his race."

VERSE 12

चिन्ना भिन्ना विभक्ता वा दीप्तेवाग्नौ प्रदीपिता
रावणं नोपतिष्ठेयं किं प्रलापेन वश्चिरम्

cinnā bhinnā vibhaktā vā dīptevāgnau pradīpitā
rāvaṇaṃ nopatiṣṭheyaṃ kiṃ pralāpena vaściram

SYNONYMS

chinna vā: (even) if cut | bhinna vā: or if divided into parts | pradīpitā vā: or (even) if burnt | agnau: in fire | dīpte: which is blazing | nopatiṣṭeyam: I will not reach | rāvaṇam: Ravana | kim: what is the use | vaḥ pralāpena: with your prattling | ciram: for a long time. |

TRANSLATION

"Even if cut or if divided into parts in blazing fire, I will not reach Ravana. What is the use with your prattling for a long time?"

VERSE 13

ख्यातः प्राज्ञः कृतज्ञ्शश्च राघवः
सद्वृत्तो निरनुक्रोशः शङ्के मद्भाग्यसंक्षयात्

khyātaḥ prājñaḥ kṛtajñśaśca rāghavaḥ
sadvṛtto niranukrośaḥ śaṅke madbhāgyasaṃkṣayāt

SYNONYMS

rāghavaḥ: Rama | khyātaḥ: is famous | prājñaḥ: is a wise man | sānulrośaśca: is compassionate | sadvṛttaḥ: with a good conduct | madbhāgya saṃkśayāt: due to deterioration of my fortune | saṅke: I doubt | niranukrośaḥ: (He became) hard hearted. |

TRANSLATION

"Rama is famous, is a wise man, is compassionate with a good conduct. Due to the deterioration of my fortune, I doubt He became hard hearted."

VERSE 14

राक्षसानां सहस्राणि जनस्थाने चतुर्दश
येनैकेन निरस्तानि स मां किं नाभिपद्यते

rākṣasānāṃ sahasrāṇi janasthāne caturdaśa
yenaikena nirastāni sa māṃ kiṃ nābhipadyate

SYNONYMS

yena ekena: by whom alone | caturdasa saharāṇi: fourteen thousand | rākśsānām: of ogres | nirastāni: have been destroyed | kim: why | saḥ: (is) that Rama | nābhipadyaḥ: not saving | mām: me. |

TRANSLATION

"By whom alone fourteen thousand of ogres have been destroyed, why is that Rama not saving me."

VERSE 15

निरुद्धा रावणेनाहमल्पवीर्येण रक्षसा
समर्थः खलु मे भर्ता रावणं हन्तुमाहवे

niruddhā rāvaṇenāhamalpavīryeṇa rakṣasā
samarthaḥ khalu me bhartā rāvaṇaṃ hantumāhave

SYNONYMS

aham: I | niruddhā: am withheld | rakśasā rāvaṇena: by the ogre Ravana | alpavīryeṇa: with little strength | me bhartā: my husband | samarthaḥ khalu: is indeed capable | hantum: to kill | rāvaṇam: Ravana | ahave: in a war. |

TRANSLATION

"I am withheld by the ogre Ravana with little strength. My husband is indeed capable of killing Ravana in a war."

VERSE 16

विराधो दण्डकारण्ये येन राक्षसपुङ्गवः
रणे रामेण निहतः स मां किं नाभिपद्यते

virādho daṇḍakāraṇye yena rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ
raṇe rāmeṇa nihataḥ sa māṃ kiṃ nābhipadyate

SYNONYMS

yena rāmeṇa: By which Rama | virādhaḥ: Viradha | rākśasa puṅgavaḥ: best among ogres | nihataḥ: has been killed | daṇḍakāraṇye: in Dandaka forest | raṇe: in a war | kim: why | saḥ: (is) that He | nābhipadyate: not saving | mām: me. |

TRANSLATION

"By which Rama Viradha, best among ogres, has been killed in Dandaka forest in a war, why is that He not saving me?"

VERSE 17

कामं मध्ये समुद्रस्य लङ्केयं दुष्प्रधर्षणा
न तु राघवबाणानां गतिरोधो भविष्यति

kāmaṃ madhye samudrasya laṅkeyaṃ duṣpradharṣaṇā
na tu rāghavabāṇānāṃ gatirodho bhaviṣyati

SYNONYMS

iyam laṅkā: this city of Lanka | samudrsya madhye: being in the middle of ocean | duṣpṛdharṣaṇā kāmam: is difficult to be attacked | tu: but | na bhaviṣyati: there will not be | gatirodhaḥ: an obstacle to flying | rāghava bānāṇām: of Rama's arrows |

TRANSLATION

"This city of Lanka being in the middle of ocean is difficult to be attacked. But there will not be an obstacle to flying of Rama's arrows."

VERSE 18

किं नु तत्कारणं येन रामो दृढपराक्रमः
रक्षसापहृतां भार्यामिष्टां नाभ्यवपद्यते

kiṃ nu tatkāraṇaṃ yena rāmo dṛḍhaparākramaḥ
rakṣasāpahṛtāṃ bhāryāmiṣṭāṃ nābhyavapadyate

SYNONYMS

kim nu: what now | tat kāraṇam: is that reason | yena: by which | rāmaḥ: Rama | dṛḍha parākramaḥ: with a firm courage | nābhyavapadyate: is not protecting | iṣṭām bhāryām: His dear wife | apahṛtām: stolen | rakśasā: by an ogre. |

TRANSLATION

"What now is that reason by which Rama with a firm courage is not protecting His dear wife stolen by an ogre."

VERSE 19

इहस्थां मां न जानीते शङ्के लक्ष्मणपूर्वजः
जानन्नपि स तेजस्वी धर्षणं मर्षयिष्यति

ihasthāṃ māṃ na jānīte śaṅke lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ
jānannapi sa tejasvī dharṣaṇaṃ marṣayiṣyati

SYNONYMS

śaṅke: I doubt that | lakśmana pūrvajaḥ: Rama elder to Lakshmana | na jānite: does not know | mām: me | ihasthām: to be here | jānannapi: after knowing | saḥ tejasvī: (will) that glorious Rama | marṣyiṣyati: tolerate | dharṣaṇam: (this) outrage. |

TRANSLATION

"I doubt that Rama elder to Laksmana does not know me to be here. After knowing will that glorious Rama tolerate this outrage?"

VERSE 20

हृतेति यो।अधिगत्वा मां राघवाय निवेदयेत्
गृध्रारजो।अपि स रणे रावणेन निपातितः

hṛteti yo|adhigatvā māṃ rāghavāya nivedayet
gṛdhrārajo|api sa raṇe rāvaṇena nipātitaḥ

SYNONYMS

yaḥ: whoever Jatayu | adhigatvā: nearing (Rama) | nivedayat: will have let known | rāghavāya: to Rama | hṛteti: (that Seetha) was stolen | saḥ gṛdhra rājaḥ api: that king of vultures | hataḥ: has been killed | rāvaṇena: by Ravana | raṇe: in war. |

TRANSLATION

"Whoever Jatayu nearing Rama will have let known to Rama that Seetha was stolen, that king of vultures has been killed by Ravana in war."

VERSE 21

कृतं कर्म महत्तेन मां तथाभ्यवपद्यता
तिष्ठता रावणद्वन्द्वे वृद्धेनापि जटायुषा

kṛtaṃ karma mahattena māṃ tathābhyavapadyatā
tiṣṭhatā rāvaṇadvandve vṛddhenāpi jaṭāyuṣā

SYNONYMS

mahat karma: a great deed | kṛtam: has been done | tena jaṭāyuṣā: by that Jatayu | tathā: thus | abhyavapadyatā: protecting | mām: me | vṛddhenāpi: although of old age | tiṣṭhatā: standing | rāvaṇa dvandve: in a dual combat with Ravana. |

TRANSLATION

"A great deed has been done by that Jatayu, thus protecting me, although of old age, standing in a dual combat with Ravana."

VERSE 22

यदि मामिह जानीयाद्वर्तमानां स राघवः
अद्य बाणैरभिक्रुद्धः कुर्याल्लोकमराक्षसम्

yadi māmiha jānīyādvartamānāṃ sa rāghavaḥ
adya bāṇairabhikruddhaḥ kuryāllokamarākṣasam

SYNONYMS

saḥ rāghavaḥ: that Rama | jānīyādyadi: if He knows | mām: me | iha vartamānām: to be living here | abhikruddhaḥ: with anger | kuryāt: will make | lokam: the world | arākśasam: to be without ogres | bāṇaiḥ: with (His) arrows | adya: now. |

TRANSLATION

"If that Rama knows me to be living here, with anger He will make the world to be without ogres with His arrows now."

VERSE 23

विधमेच्च पुरीं लङ्कां शोषयेच्च महोदधिम्
रावणस्य च नीचस्य कीर्तिं नाम च नाशयेत्

vidhamecca purīṃ laṅkāṃ śoṣayecca mahodadhim
rāvaṇasya ca nīcasya kīrtiṃ nāma ca nāśayet

SYNONYMS

vidhamecca: (Rama will) blow away laN^kaaM puriim = the city of Lanka | śoṣayecca: will dry up | mahodadhim: the great ocean | nāśayet: will destroy | kīrtim: the fame | nāma ca: and name | rāvaṇasya: of Ravana. |

TRANSLATION

"Rama will blow away the city of Lanka, will dry up the great ocean, will destroy the name and fame of Ravana."

VERSE 24

ततो निहतनाथानां राक्षसीनां गृहे गृहे
यथाहमेवं रुदती तथा भुयो न संशयः

tato nihatanāthānāṃ rākṣasīnāṃ gṛhe gṛhe
yathāhamevaṃ rudatī tathā bhuyo na saṃśayaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | yathā: how | aham: I | evam rudatī: am crying in this way | tathā: in the same way | gṛhe gṛhe: in house and house | rākśasīnām: ogresses | nihatanādhānām: with killed husbands (will cry) | bhūyaḥ: again and again | na saṃśayaḥ: there is no doubt. |

TRANSLATION

"Thereafter how I am crying in this way, in the same way, in very house, ogresses with killed husbands will cry again and again. There is no doubt in this."

VERSE 25

अन्विष्य रक्षसां लङ्कां कुर्याद्रामः सलक्ष्मणः
न हि ताभ्यां रिपुर्दृष्टो मुहूर्तमपि
जीवति

anviṣya rakṣasāṃ laṅkāṃ kuryādrāmaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ
na hi tābhyāṃ ripurdṛṣṭo muhūrtamapi
jīvati

SYNONYMS

rāmaḥ: Rama | salakśmaṇaḥ: together will Lakshmana | anviṣya: will search | laṅkām: Lanka | rakśasām: of ogres | kuryāt: will do (destruction) | ripuḥ: an enemy | dṛṣṭaḥ: seen | tābhyām: by those two | na jīvati hi: will indeed not live | muhūrtamapi: even for a moment. |

TRANSLATION

"Rama together will Lakshmana will search the city of Lanka belonging to ogres. An enemy seen by those two will indeed not live even for a moment."

VERSE 26

चिताधुमाकुलपथा गृध्रमण्डलसंकुला
अचिरेण तु लङ्केयं श्मशानसदृशी भवेत्

citādhumākulapathā gṛdhramaṇḍalasaṃkulā
acireṇa tu laṅkeyaṃ śmaśānasadṛśī bhavet

SYNONYMS

iyam: this | lan^kā: Lanka | acireṇa: shortly | bhavet: will become | śmaśāna sadṛśī: like a graveyard | citādhūmakulapathā: with paths agitated with smoke of funeral pyres | gṛdhramaṇḍalasaṃkulā: crowded with a group of vultures. |

TRANSLATION

"This Lanka shortly will become like a graveyard, with paths agitated with smoke of funeral pyres, crowded with a group of vultures."

VERSE 27

अचिरेणैव कालेन प्राप्स्याम्येव मनोरथम्
दुष्प्रस्थानो।अयमाख्याति सर्वेषाम् वो विपर्ययम्

acireṇaiva kālena prāpsyāmyeva manoratham
duṣprasthāno|ayamākhyāti sarveṣām vo viparyayam

SYNONYMS

acireṇa kālenaiva: in a short time only | prāpsyāmeva: I will attain | manoratham: (my) desire | ayam: this | duṣprasthānaḥ: evil course | ākhyāti: is telling | sarveṣām: all | vaḥ: of your | viparyayam: destruction. |

TRANSLATION

"In a short time only I will attain my desire. This evil course is telling of destruction of you all."

VERSE 28

यादृशानीह दृशन्ते लङ्कायामशुभानि वै
अचिरेणैव कालेन भविष्यति हतप्रभा

yādṛśānīha dṛśante laṅkāyāmaśubhāni vai
acireṇaiva kālena bhaviṣyati hataprabhā

SYNONYMS

iha: here | laṅkāyām: in Lanka | yādṛśāni: whatever | aśubhāni: inauspicious things | dṛśyante: are being seen | acireṇaiva kālena: (from those) in a short while | bhaviṣyati: (Lanka) will become | hataprabhā: deprived of glory. |

TRANSLATION

"Here in Lanka whatever inauspicious things are being seen, from those, in a short while Lanka will become deprived of glory."

VERSE 29

नूनं लङ्का हते पापे रावणे राक्षसाधमे
शोषं यास्यति दुर्धर्षा प्रमदा विधव यथा

nūnaṃ laṅkā hate pāpe rāvaṇe rākṣasādhame
śoṣaṃ yāsyati durdharṣā pramadā vidhava yathā

SYNONYMS

pāpe: sinful | rākśasādhame: vile ogre | rāvaṇe: Ravana | hate: while being killed | laṅkā: Lanka | durdharṣā: which is unconquerable | nūnam: definitely | yāsyati: will get | śoṣam: drying up | pramadā yathā: like a woman | vidhavā: who lost husband. |

TRANSLATION

"While the sinful, vile ogre Ravana is being killed, Lanka which is unconquerable till now, definitely will get drying up like a woman who lost husband."

VERSE 30

पुण्योत्सव समृद्धा च नष्टभर्र्ती सराक्षसी
भविष्यति पुरी लङ्का नष्टभर्त्री यथाङ्गना

puṇyotsava samṛddhā ca naṣṭabharrtī sarākṣasī
bhaviṣyati purī laṅkā naṣṭabhartrī yathāṅganā

SYNONYMS

puṇyotsava samṛddhā: (now) abounding in pious festivities | laṅkāpurī: the city of Lanka | naṣṭa bhartrī: with lost husband | sarākśasī: together with ogresses | bhaviṣyati: will become | aṅganā yathā: like a woman |

TRANSLATION

"Now abounding in pious festivities, the city of Lanka with lost lord together with ogresses will become like a woman with lost husband."

VERSE 31

नूनं राक्षसकन्यानां रुदन्तीनां गृहे गृहे
श्रोष्यामि नचिरादेव दुःखार्तानामिह ध्वनिम्

nūnaṃ rākṣasakanyānāṃ rudantīnāṃ gṛhe gṛhe
śroṣyāmi nacirādeva duḥkhārtānāmiha dhvanim

SYNONYMS

nacirādeva: in a short while | iha: here | gṛhe gṛhe: in every house | nūnam śroṣyāmi: I can definitely hear | dhvanim: the sound | rākśasakanyānām: of ogresses | rudantīnām: crying | duḥkhārtānām: being tormented by grief. |

TRANSLATION

"In a short while here in every house I can definitely hear the sound of ogresses crying being tormented by grief."

VERSE 32

सान्धकारा हतद्योता हतराक्षसपुङ्गवा
भविष्यति पुरी लङ्का निर्दग्धा रामसायकैः

sāndhakārā hatadyotā hatarākṣasapuṅgavā
bhaviṣyati purī laṅkā nirdagdhā rāmasāyakaiḥ

SYNONYMS

laṅkā purī: the city of Lanka | bhaviṣyati: will become | nirdagdhā: burnt | rāmasāyakaiḥ: by Rama's arrows | sāndhakārā: together with darkness | hadadyotā: with destroyed lustre | hata rākśasa puṅgavā: with killed best ogres. |

TRANSLATION

"The city of Lanka will become burnt by Rama's arrows together with darkness, with destroyed luster with killed best ogres."

VERSE 33

यदि नाम स शूरो मां रामो रक्तान्तालोचनः
जानीयद्वर्तमानां हि रावणस्य निवेशने

yadi nāma sa śūro māṃ rāmo raktāntālocanaḥ
jānīyadvartamānāṃ hi rāvaṇasya niveśane

SYNONYMS

saḥ rāmaḥ: that Rama | śūraḥ: a strong man | raktānta locanaḥ: with red eye corners | yadi nāma jānīyāt: will he know | mām: me | vartamānām: to be living | niveśane: in the house | rāvaṇasya: of Ravana. |

TRANSLATION

"Will that Rama who is a strong man with red eye corners know me to be in the house of Ravana."

VERSE 34

अनेन तु नृशंसेन रावणेनाधमेन मे
समयो यस्तु निर्दिष्टस्तस्य कालो।अयमागतः

anena tu nṛśaṃsena rāvaṇenādhamena me
samayo yastu nirdiṣṭastasya kālo|ayamāgataḥ

SYNONYMS

yaḥ: whatever | samayaḥ: time | nirdiṣṭa: ordered | anena rāvaṇena: by this Ravana | nṛśaṃsena: who is cruel | adhamena: (and) vilest of men | ayam: this | kālaḥ: time | āgataḥ: has come | me: to me | saḥ mṛtyuḥ: that death | vihitaḥ: decreed | na vartate: does not hold good | asmin duṣṭe: in the matter of this evil one. |

TRANSLATION

"Whatever time has been ordered by this cruel and vilest of men Ravana, this time has come to me. That death decreed to me does not hold good to this evil one (Ravana)."

VERSE 35

अकार्यं ये न जानन्ति नैरृताः पापकारिणः

akāryaṃ ye na jānanti nairṛtāḥ pāpakāriṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

36| ye nairṛtāḥ: Whoever ogres | pāpakāriṇaḥ: who are sinners | nā jānati: do not know | akāryam: what should not be done | adharmāttu: due to their unrighteousness | sāṃpratam: now | bhaviṣyati: there will be | mahotpātaḥ: a great calamity | ete: these | rākśasāḥ: ogres | piśitanāśanāḥ: who are meat eaters | na jānati: do not know | dharmam: virtue. |

TRANSLATION

"Whoever sinful ogres who do not know what should not be done, due to their unrighteousness now there will be a great calamity. These meat eating ogres do not know virtue."

VERSE 37

ध्रुवं मां प्रातराशार्थे राक्षसः कल्पयिस्यति
साहं कथं करिष्यामि तं विना प्रियदर्शनम्

dhruvaṃ māṃ prātarāśārthe rākṣasaḥ kalpayisyati
sāhaṃ kathaṃ kariṣyāmi taṃ vinā priyadarśanam

SYNONYMS

rākśsaḥ: an ogre | dhruvam: will definitely | kalpayiṣyati: make | mām: me | prātarāśārthe: for breakfast | sā aham: such I | katham kariṣyāmi: what should do | tam vinā: without Rama | priyadarśanam: with pleasing appearance | suduḥkhitā: I am grieving a lot | apaśyantī: not seeing | rāmam: Rama | raktāntanayanam: with red eye corners. |

TRANSLATION

"An ogre will definitely eat me for breakfast. What should such I do without Rama with pleasing appearance? I am grieving a lot not seeing Rama with red eye corners."

VERSE 38

यदि कश्चित् प्रदाता मे विषस्याद्य भवेदिह

yadi kaścit pradātā me viṣasyādya bhavediha

SYNONYMS

adya: now | kaścit bhavedyadi: if there exists any one | prādātā: (who is a) giver | viṣasya: of poison | iha: here | patinā vinā: (I) without husband | kśipram: quickly | paśyeyam: will see | devam: the god | vaivasvatam: Yama. |

TRANSLATION

"Now if there exists any one who is a giver of poison here, I without husband quickly will see the god Yama."

VERSE 39

नाजानाज्जिवतीं रामः स मां लक्ष्मणपूर्वजः

nājānājjivatīṃ rāmaḥ sa māṃ lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ rāmaḥ: that Rama | lakśmaṇa pūrvajaḥ: elder to Lakshmana | nājānāt: (may) not know | mām: me | jīvatīm: to be alive | tau: those two | jānantau: knowing (me to be alive) | na kuryatām iti na: it cannot be said that they will not do | mama mārgaṇam: my search | ūrdhvām: on earth |

TRANSLATION

"That Rama elder to Lakshmana may not know me to be alive. If those two know me to be alive, then it cannot be said that they will not do my search on earth."

VERSE 40

नूनं ममैव शोकेन स नीरो लक्ष्मणाग्रजः

nūnaṃ mamaiva śokena sa nīro lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ

SYNONYMS

lakśmaṇāgrajaḥ: the elder brother of LakshmaNa | saḥ: that Rama | vīrāḥ: who is valiant | mama śokenaiva: due to grief of me | tyaktvā: leaving | deham: the body | mahītale: on earth | yātaḥ: has gone | itaḥ: from here | devalokam: to celestial world | nūnam: this is certain. |

TRANSLATION

"That valiant Rama who is the elder brother of Lakshmana due to grief of me, leaving the body on earth has gone to celestial world. This is certain."

VERSE 41

धन्या देवाह् सगन्धर्वाः सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः

dhanyā devāh sagandharvāḥ siddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ

SYNONYMS

ye: whoever | paśyanti: is seeing | mama: my | nātham: husband | rāmam: Rama | rājīva locanam: with eyes resembling a lotus flower | devāḥ: (such) Devas | siddhāśca: Siddhas | sagandhravāḥ: together with Gandharvas | parmarṣayaḥ: and great sages | dhanyāḥ: are fortunate. |

TRANSLATION

"Whoever is seeing my husband Rama with eyes resembling a lotus flower such Devas, Siddhas together with Gandharvas and great sages are fortunate."

VERSE 42

अथवा न हि तस्यार्थो द्कर्मकामस्य धीमतः

athavā na hi tasyārtho dkarmakāmasya dhīmataḥ

SYNONYMS

athavā: or | tasya rāmasya: to that Rama | dharmakāmasya: with a desire in virtuousness | dhīmataḥ: who is intelligent | rājarṣeḥ: sage-king | paramātmanaḥ: the supreme spirit | artham na: there is no use | mayā: with me | bhāryayā: his wife. |

TRANSLATION

"Or to that Rama with a desire in virtuousness, who is intelligent, a sage-king, the supreme spirit, there is no use with me, his wife."

VERSE 43

दृश्यमाने भवेत्प्रीतिः सौहृदं नास्त्यपश्यतः

dṛśyamāne bhavetprītiḥ sauhṛdaṃ nāstyapaśyataḥ

SYNONYMS

prītiḥ bhavet: friendly disposition will occur | dṛśyamāne: in what is being seen | nāsti: there is no | sauhṛdam: friendship | apaśyataḥ: to one who does not see | kṛtaghnāḥ: ungreatful ones | nāśayanti: destroy (friendship) | rāmaḥ tu: but Rama | na nāśayiṣyati: will not destroy friendship. |

TRANSLATION

"Friendly disposition will occur in what is being seen. There is no friendship to one who does not see. Ungrateful ones destroy frindship. But Rama will not destroy friendship."

VERSE 44

किं नु मे न गुणाः केचित्किं वा भाग्यक्षयो मम

kiṃ nu me na guṇāḥ kecitkiṃ vā bhāgyakṣayo mama

SYNONYMS

aham: I | : who | bhāminī: is a woman | sīdāmi: (who is) perishing | mukhyena rāmeṇa vinā: without the chief Rama | me: to (such) me | na kiṃ nu: are there no | kecit guṇāḥ: good qualities | kiṃ vā: or | mama: (has) my | bhāgyakśayaḥ: fortune diminished. |

TRANSLATION

"I who is a woman who is perishing without the chief Rama to such me are there no good qualities or has my fortune diminished."

VERSE 45

श्र्यो हि हीवितान्मर्तुं विहीनाया महात्मनः

śryo hi hīvitānmartuṃ vihīnāyā mahātmanaḥ

SYNONYMS

vihīnāyāḥ: deprived | rāmāt: from Rama | akliṣṭa cāritrāt: with untroubled reputation | śūrāt: a warrior | śatrunibarhaṇāt: annihilator of enemies | mahātmanaḥ: a great soul | me: to (such) me | jīvitāt: more than living | martuḥ: death | śreyaḥ: is good. |

TRANSLATION

"To me who is deprived of Rama with untroubled reputation, a warrior, annihilator of enemies, a great soul, more than living, death is good."

VERSE 46

अथवा न्यस्तशस्त्रौ तौ वने मूलफलाशिनौ

athavā nyastaśastrau tau vane mūlaphalāśinau

SYNONYMS

athavā: or | tau bhrātarau: those two brothers | naraśresṭhau: best among men | nyasta śastrau: giving up weapons | vane: in the forest | saṃvṛttau: (may have) become | vanagocarau: dwellers of forest | mūlaphalāśanau: eating roots and fruits. |

TRANSLATION

"Or those two brothers who are best among men giving up weapons in the forest may have become dwellers of forest eating roots and fruits."

VERSE 47

अथवा राक्षसेन्द्रेण रावणेन दुरात्मना

athavā rākṣasendreṇa rāvaṇena durātmanā

SYNONYMS

athavā: or | rāmalakśmaṇau: Rama and Lakshmana | śūrau bhrātarau: the warrior brothers | ghātitau: (may have been) killed | durātmanā: by the evil soul | rākśsendreṇa rāvaṇena: by king of ogres Ravana | cadmanā: by deceit |

TRANSLATION

"Or Rama and Lakshmana the warrior brothers may have been killed by the evil soul king of ogres Ravana by deceit."

VERSE 48

साहमेवंगते काले मर्तुमिच्छामि सर्वथा

sāhamevaṃgate kāle martumicchāmi sarvathā

SYNONYMS

evam gate: under such circumstances | kāle: (and time) | : such | aham: I | sarvathā: in all ways | icchāmi: am desiring | martum: to die | asmin dukhaḥ api: even in this grief | mṛtyuḥ: death | vihitaḥ na vartate: is not bestowed (on me). |

TRANSLATION

"Under such circumstances and time, such I in all ways am desiring to die. Even in this grief, death is not bestowed on me."

VERSE 49

धन्याः खलु महात्मानो मुनयस्त्यक्तकिल्बिषाः

dhanyāḥ khalu mahātmāno munayastyaktakilbiṣāḥ

SYNONYMS

mahātmanaḥ: great souled ones | tyakta kilbiṣāḥ: with abandoned sins | jittatmanaḥ: with a conquered mind | mahābhāgāḥ: those with great fortune | munayaḥ: sages | dhanyāḥ khalu: are indeed fortunate | yeṣām: to whom | na staḥ: there is no | priyāpriye: pleasure or displeasure. |

TRANSLATION

"Great souled ones with abandoned sins, with a conquered mind, those with great fortune, sages are indeed fortunate to whom there is no pleasure and displeasure."

VERSE 50

प्रियान्न संभवेद्दुःखमप्रियादधिकं भयम्

priyānna saṃbhavedduḥkhamapriyādadhikaṃ bhayam

SYNONYMS

priyāt: from pleasure | duḥkham: sorrow | apriyāt: (and) from displeasure | adhikam bhayam: great fear | na sambhavet: do not occur (to great souls) | ye: whoever | viyujyante: are separated | tābhyām: from pleasure and displeasure | namaḥ: (my) obeisance | teṣām mahātmānām: to such great souls. |

TRANSLATION

"From pleasure sorrow and from displeasure great fear do not occur to great souls. Whoever are separated from pleasure and displeasure, my obeisance to such great souls."

VERSE 51

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे षड्विंशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye sundarakāṇḍe ṣaḍviṃśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

tyaktā: left | priyeṇaiva rāmeṇa: by dear Rama | viditātmanā: with a well known mind | vaśam gatā: coming under the control | pāpasya: of sinful one | rāvaṇasya: of Ravana | sā aham: such I | tyakśāmi: will leave | prāṇān: breath of life. |

TRANSLATION

"Left by dear Rama with a well known mind coming under the control of sinful Ravana, such I will leave breath of life."
