VERSE 1

ततः स कपि शार्दूलः तेन वाक्येन हर्षितः
सीताम् उवाच तत् श्रुत्वा वाक्यम् वाक्य विशारदः

tataḥ sa kapi śārdūlaḥ tena vākyena harṣitaḥ
sītām uvāca tat śrutvā vākyam vākya viśāradaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | saḥ kapi: shaarduulaH = that excellent among monkeys | vākya viśāradaḥ: who was skilled in speech | śrutvā: after hearing | tat vākyam: those words | toṣitaḥ: was pleased | uvāca: and spoke | sītām: to Seetha ( as follows): |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those words of Seetha, the eloquent Hanuma was very much pleased and spoke to Seetha (as follows):

VERSE 2

युक्त रूपम् त्वया देवि भाषितम् शुभ दर्शने
सदृशम् स्त्री स्वभावस्य साध्वीनाम् विनयस्य च

yukta rūpam tvayā devi bhāṣitam śubha darśane
sadṛśam strī svabhāvasya sādhvīnām vinayasya ca

SYNONYMS

śubhadarśana: O beautiful Seetha | devi: the princess! | bhāṣitam: what is spoken | tvayā: by you | yuktarūpam: is befitting | sadṛśam: It is suitable | strīsvabhavāśca: of woman's nature | vinayasyaca: and of the humility | sādhvīnām: of chaste women. |

TRANSLATION

"O Seetha, the beautiful princess! Whatever you spoke is befitting. It is in keeping with woman's nature and humility of a chaste women."

VERSE 3

स्त्रीत्वम् न तु समर्थम् हि सागरम् व्यतिवर्तितुम्
माम् अधिष्ठाय विस्तीर्णम् शत योजनम् आयतम्

strītvam na tu samartham hi sāgaram vyativartitum
mām adhiṣṭhāya vistīrṇam śata yojanam āyatam

SYNONYMS

na samartham hi: It is not indeed fit for | strītvam: womanhood | adhiṣṭhāya: to mount on | mām: me | vyativartitum: and cross | vistīrṇam: an extensive | sāgaram: ocean | śatayojanam āyatam: which is wide of one hundred Yojanas. |

TRANSLATION

"It is indeed not fit for a woman to mount on my back and traverse an extensive ocean, which is having a width of one hundred yojanas."

VERSE 4

द्वितीयम् कारणम् यच् च ब्रवीषि विनय अन्विते
रामात् अन्यस्य न अर्हामि संस्पर्शम् इति जानकि

dvitīyam kāraṇam yac ca bravīṣi vinaya anvite
rāmāt anyasya na arhāmi saṃsparśam iti jānaki

SYNONYMS

5| jānaki: O Seetha | vinayānvite: endowed with modesty! | yat: which | kāraṇam: reason | bravīṣi: you were telling | nārhamīti: that you would not be | samsparśam: touching | anyasya: any one else | rāmāt: than Rama | etat: it | sadṛśam: is befitting | te: of you | patnyāḥ: the wife | tasya mahātmanaḥ: of that high soled Rama | devi: O princess | kā anyā: which other woman | tvāmṛte: except you | brūyat: can speak | īdṛśam: such | amṛte: sweet | vacanam: words? |

TRANSLATION

"O Seetha endowed with modesty! The second reason you mentioned that you would not be touching any one else other then Rama is befitting of you, the wife of that high soled Rama. O princess! which other lady except you can speak of such sweet words?"

VERSE 6

श्रोष्यते चैव काकुत्स्थः सर्वम् निरवशेषतः
चेष्टितम् यत् त्वया देवि भाषितम् मम च अग्रतः

śroṣyate caiva kākutsthaḥ sarvam niravaśeṣataḥ
ceṣṭitam yat tvayā devi bhāṣitam mama ca agrataḥ

SYNONYMS

devi: O princess! | kākutthsa: Rama | śroṣyate: will hear | niravaśeṣataḥ: completely | sarvam: all | yat: that | ceṣṭitam: was acted correctly | tvayā: by you | bhāṣitam: and spoken | agrataḥ: in front | mama: of me. |

TRANSLATION

"O princess! I can completely inform Rama of all that you have done and of all that you have spoken before me."

VERSE 7

कारणैः बहुभिः देवि राम प्रिय चिकीर्षया
स्नेह प्रस्कन्न मनसा मया एतत् समुदीरितम्

kāraṇaiḥ bahubhiḥ devi rāma priya cikīrṣayā
sneha praskanna manasā mayā etat samudīritam

SYNONYMS

devi: O princess! | bahubhiḥ kāraṇaiḥ: because of several reasons | rāma priyacikīrṣayā: being desirous of doing good to Rama | sneha praskanna manasā: and with a mind moistened with affection | etat: this | samudīritam: was spoken mayaa = by me. |

TRANSLATION

"O princess! All this was told by me because of several reasons, being desirous of doing good to Rama ad with my mind moistened with affection towards him."

VERSE 8

लन्काया दुष्प्रवेशत्वात् दुस्तरत्वान् महाउदधेः
सामर्थ्यात् आत्मनः चैव मया एतत् समुदाहृतम्

lankāyā duṣpraveśatvāt dustaratvān mahāudadheḥ
sāmarthyāt ātmanaḥ caiva mayā etat samudāhṛtam

SYNONYMS

duṣpradharṣatrāt: because of the unassailability | lankāyāḥ: of Lanka | mahodadheḥ: and the great ocean | dustaratvā: difficult to be crossed | ātmanaḥ sāmarthyāccaiva: and because of my capability | etat: this | samudīritam: was spoken | mayā: by me. |

TRANSLATION

"I spoke this because of the unassailability of Lanka, its great ocean so difficult to be crossed and also my capacity of taking you."

VERSE 9

इच्छामि त्वाम् समानेतुम् अद्य एव रघु बन्धुना
गुरु स्नेहेन भक्त्या च न अन्यथा तत् उदाहृतम्

icchāmi tvām samānetum adya eva raghu bandhunā
guru snehena bhaktyā ca na anyathā tat udāhṛtam

SYNONYMS

gurusnehena: because of my great affection | bhaktyāca: and devotion | icchami: I wish | tvām samānetum: to carry you well | adyaiva: now itself | raghubandhunā: te Rama your husband | etat: these words | na udāhṛtam: were not spoken | anyathā: from another motive. |

TRANSLATION

"Because of my great affection and devotion towards you, I wish to carry you well now itself to Rama your hushand. These words were not spoken by me with any other motive."

VERSE 10

यदि न उत्सहसे यातुम् मया सार्धम् अनिन्दिते
अभिज्ञानम् प्रयच्छ त्वम् जानीयात् राघवो हि यत्

yadi na utsahase yātum mayā sārdham anindite
abhijñānam prayaccha tvam jānīyāt rāghavo hi yat

SYNONYMS

anindite: O faultless Seetha! | notsahaseyadi: if you are not willing | yātam: to go | mayā sārtham: with me | tvam: you | prayaccha: give | abhijñānam: a token of remembrance | yat: which | rāghāḥ: Rama | jānīyāt: can recognise. |

TRANSLATION

"O faultless Seetha! If you are not willing to go with me, give me a token of remembrance which Rama can recognise."

VERSE 11

एवम् उक्ता हनुमता सीता सुर सुत उपमा
उवाच वचनम् मन्दम् बाष्प प्रग्रथित अक्षरम्

evam uktā hanumatā sītā sura suta upamā
uvāca vacanam mandam bāṣpa pragrathita akṣaram

SYNONYMS

evam: thus | uktā: spoken | hanumatā: by Hanuma | sītā: Seetha | surasutopatā: like the daughter of god | mandam: slowly | uvāca: spoke | vacanam: the (following) words | bāṣpa pragrathitā kṣaram: strung together with alphabets of tears | tvamtu: you | brūyāḥ: tell | idam: this | śreṣṭham: excellent thing | abhiñānam: as a token of remembrance | mama priyam: to my beloved husband. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing Hanuma's words, Seetha like the daughter of a god, slowly spoke the following words, strung together with alphabets of tears: "You tell this (following) excellent thing as a token of remembrance to my beloved husband."

VERSE 12

शैलस्य चित्र कूटस्य पादे पूर्व उत्तरे तदा

śailasya citra kūṭasya pāde pūrva uttare tadā

SYNONYMS

14| pāde: at a hillock | pūrvottare: in the north-eastern direction | citrakūṭasya śailasya: of Chitrakuta mountain | prājyamūla phalodake: having bountiful roots fruits and water | tasmin deśa: in that place | siddhāśrite: inhabited by seers | mandākinya vidūrataḥ: in the vicinity of River Ganges | purā: long ago | vihṛtya: (we were) strolling | salile: in water | upavana khaṇḍeṣu: in parts of groves | nānāpuṣpa sugandhiṣu: with various kinds of flowers in perfume | tasya: of that hillock | klinnaḥ: you became wet | samupāviśaḥ: and sat | mama aṅke: at my proximity | tāpasāśramavāsinyāaḥ: residing in the hermitage of sages. |

TRANSLATION

"There is a place inhabited by sages at a hillock in the north-eastern It was bountiful with roots fruits and water. In that place, while we were residing in a hermitage of sages, on a day long ago, we were strolling in water in parts of groves with various kinds of flowers of perfume in that hillock. Your thereupon became wet and sat at my proximity."

VERSE 15

ततो मांस समायुक्तो वायसः पर्यतुण्डयत्
तम् अहम् लोष्टम् उद्यम्य वारयामि स्म वायसम्

tato māṃsa samāyukto vāyasaḥ paryatuṇḍayat
tam aham loṣṭam udyamya vārayāmi sma vāyasam

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | vāyasaḥ: a crow | māmsasamāyuktaḥ: yearning for meat | paryatuṅḍayat: began to peek (me) | aham: I | udyamya: lifting | loṣṭam: a clod of earth | vārayāmisma: prevented | tam: that | vāyasam: crow. |

TRANSLATION

"Then, a crow, yearning for meat, began to peck me. Picking up a clod of earth, I prevented the crow from its act."

VERSE 16

दारयन् स च माम् काकः तत्र एव परिलीयते
न च अपि उपरमन् मांसात् भक्ष अर्थी बलि भोजनः

dārayan sa ca mām kākaḥ tatra eva parilīyate
na ca api uparaman māṃsāt bhakṣa arthī bali bhojanaḥ

SYNONYMS

dārayan: tearing | mām: me | saḥ kākaḥ: that crow pariliiyate = was hiding | tatraiva: there only | saḥ: that | balibhojanah: crow | bhakṣārthī: yearning for food | na upāramacchāpi: did not resign | māmsāt: from meat. |

TRANSLATION

"Pecking me again and again, the crow was hiding there only. That crow, yearning for food, did not resig from meat."

VERSE 17

उत्कर्षन्त्याम् च रशनाम् क्रुद्धायाम् मयि पक्षिणे
स्रंसमाने च वसने ततो दृष्टा त्वया हि अहम्

utkarṣantyām ca raśanām kruddhāyām mayi pakṣiṇe
sraṃsamāne ca vasane tato dṛṣṭā tvayā hi aham

SYNONYMS

mayi: (while) I | kruddhāyām: was angry | pakṣiṇā: with that bird | vasane: my skirt | srasyamāneca: was slipping | utkarṣantyāmca: and I was pulling | raśanām: its string (so as to tighten it) | aham: I | dṛṣṭā: was seen | tvayā: by you | tataḥ: then. |

TRANSLATION

"While I was angry with that bird, my skirt was slipping and I was pulling its string (so as to tighten it). I was seen by you then."

VERSE 18

त्वया विहसिता च अहम् क्रुद्धा सम्लज्जिता तदा
भक्ष्य गृद्धेन कालेन दारिता त्वाम् उपागता

tvayā vihasitā ca aham kruddhā samlajjitā tadā
bhakṣya gṛddhena kālena dāritā tvām upāgatā

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | aham: I | kṛddhā: moved by anger | samlajjitā: felt abashed | apahasitā: being laughed at | tvayā: by you | dāritā: Torn down | kākena: by crow | bhakṣagṛdhnena: which was yearning for food | upāgatā: I sought shelter | tvām: with you. |

TRANSLATION

"Moved by anger, I felt abashed for being laughed at by you. Torn down by the crow, which was yearning for food, I sought shelter with you."

VERSE 19

आसीनस्य च ते श्रान्ता पुनः उत्सन्गम् आविशम्
क्रुध्यन्ती च प्रहृष्टेन त्वया अहम् परिसान्त्विता

āsīnasya ca te śrāntā punaḥ utsangam āviśam
krudhyantī ca prahṛṣṭena tvayā aham parisāntvitā

SYNONYMS

śrāntā: feeling tired | punaḥ āviśam: I again settled on | te: your | utsaṅgam: lap | kruddhyantī: as though angry | aham: I | parisānvitā: was consoled | tvayā: by you | prahṛṣṭena: fully delighted. |

TRANSLATION

"Feeling tired, I again settled on your lap. As though angry, I was consoled by you and I was fully delighted."

VERSE 20

बाष्प पूर्ण मुखी मन्दम् चक्षुषी परिमार्जती
लक्षिता अहम् त्वया नाथ वायसेन प्रकोपिता

bāṣpa pūrṇa mukhī mandam cakṣuṣī parimārjatī
lakṣitā aham tvayā nātha vāyasena prakopitā

SYNONYMS

nātha: O Lord! | prakopitā: annoyed | vāyasena: by the crow | bāṣpapūrṇamukhī: having my face filled with tears | cakṣuṣi: and having my eyes | parimārjatī: being wiped | mandam: slowly | aham: I | lakṣitā: was seen | tvayā: by you. |

TRANSLATION

"Slowly wiping my eyes, my face filled with tears, I was seen by you, O Lord, as having been annoyed by the crow."

VERSE 21

परिश्रमात्प्रसुप्ता च राघवाङ्के ।अप्य्हम् चिरम्
पर्याण प्रसुप्तश्च ममाङ्के भरताग्रजः ५३८२१

pariśramātprasuptā ca rāghavāṅke |apyham ciram
paryāṇa prasuptaśca mamāṅke bharatāgrajaḥ 5-38-21

SYNONYMS

ahamapi: I even | prasuptā ca: slept | ciram: for a long time | rāghavāṇke: on Rama's lap | pariśramāt: because of fatigue | paryāyeṇa: in his turn | bharatāgrajaḥ: Rama | prasuptaḥ: slept | aṅke: in my arms. |

TRANSLATION

"I even slept for a long time on Rama's lap because of my fatigue. In his turn, Rama the elder brother of Bharata, slept in my arms."

VERSE 22

स तत्र पुनरे वाथ वायसः समुपागमत्
ततः सुप्तप्रबुद्धाम् माम् रामस्याङ्कात्समुत्थिताम्

sa tatra punare vātha vāyasaḥ samupāgamat
tataḥ suptaprabuddhām mām rāmasyāṅkātsamutthitām

SYNONYMS

23| atha: thereafter | saḥ vāyasaḥ: that crow | punareva: again | samupāgamat: came | tatra: there | tataḥ: then | saḥ: that | vāyasaḥ: crow | sahasā: quickly | āgamya: having arrived at | mām: me | samutthitām: who raised | aṅkāt: from the lap | rāmasya: of Rama | suptaprabuddhām: after waking up from my sleep | vidadāra: clawed | stanāntare: the space between my breasts | atha: and | utpatya: flying up | punaḥ punaḥ: again and again | mām vidadāra: tore me up | bhṛśam: a lot. |

TRANSLATION

"Meanwhile, the same crow appeared there. Descending all of a sudden, the crow clawed me at the space between the breasts, even as I awoke from my sleep and rose from the lap of Rama. Flying up again, it tore me up a lot."

VERSE 24

ततः समुक्षितो रामो मुक्तैः शोणितबिन्दुभिः
वयसेन ततस्तेन बलवत्क्लिश्यमानया

tataḥ samukṣito rāmo muktaiḥ śoṇitabindubhiḥ
vayasena tatastena balavatkliśyamānayā

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | rāmaḥ: Rama | samukṣitaḥ: was moistened | muktaiḥ śoṇita bindubhiḥ: by the discharged drops of blood | saḥ: that Rama | śrīmān: the splendid man | paramtapaḥ: the destroyer of enemies | sukha suptaḥ: who was in a pleasant slumber | bodhitaḥ: was woken up | tena rāyasena: by that crow | mayā: and by me | balavat kliśyamānayā: who was grievously tormented (by the crow). |

TRANSLATION

"Then, Rama got wet by the discharged drops of blood. Thereafter, that splendorous Rama, the annihilator of enemies, who was in a pleasant slumber, was woken up by that crow and by me who was grievously tormented by the crow."

VERSE 25

स माम् दृष्ट्वा महाबाहुर्वितुन्नाम् स्तनयोस्तदा

sa mām dṛṣṭvā mahābāhurvitunnām stanayostadā

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that Rama | mahābāhuḥ: the long armed | dṛṣṭvā: seeing | mām: me | vitunnām: pierced | stanayoḥ: on the breasts | tadā: then | śvasan: hissing | kruddhah aśīviṣaiva: like an angry serpant | abhāṣata: spoke | vākyam: (the following) words. |

TRANSLATION

"That long-armed Rama, seeing me pierced violently on the breasts, then spoke the following words, hissing like an angry serpant.

VERSE 26

केन ते नाग नास ऊरु विक्षतम् वै स्तन अन्तरम्

kena te nāga nāsa ūru vikṣatam vai stana antaram

SYNONYMS

nāganāsoru: O Seetha the round thighed woman! | kena: by whom | te stanāntaram: the space between your breasts | vikṣatam vai: was wounded? | kaḥ: who | krīḍati: is playing | paṅca vaktreṇa bhoginā: with a fire-faced serpent | saroṣeṇa: filled with fury? |

TRANSLATION

"O Seetha the round-thighed woman! Who has wounded the space between your breasts? who is playing with a fire-faced serpent filled with fury?"

VERSE 27

वीक्षमाणः ततः तम् वै वायसम् समवैक्षथाः

vīkṣamāṇaḥ tataḥ tam vai vāyasam samavaikṣathāḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | vīkṣamāṇaḥ: throwing a glance (around) | samudaikṣata: (Rama) saw | tam vāyasam: that crow | tīkṣṇaiḥ nakhaiḥ: with its sharp claws | sarudhiraiḥ: moistened with blood | sthitam: and remaining | abhimukham: in front of | māneva: me alone. |

TRANSLATION

'Then, throwing a glance around, Rama saw that crow with its sharp claws moistened iwth blood and sitting in front of me alone."

VERSE 28

पुत्रः किल स शक्रस्य वायसः पतताम् वरः

putraḥ kila sa śakrasya vāyasaḥ patatām varaḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ: vaayasaH = that crow | varaḥ: the best | patatām: among birds | putraḥ kila: seems to be the son | śakrasya: of Indra the Lord of celestials | dharāntarayataḥ: residing | gatau: and in moving | śīghram: speedily | samaḥ: equal | paranasya: to the wind. |

TRANSLATION

"That crow, the best among birds, seems to be the son of Indra the Lord of celestials, staying in mountains and moving with a peed equal to the wind."

VERSE 29

ततः तस्मिन् महाबाहुः कोप सम्वर्तित ईक्षणः

tataḥ tasmin mahābāhuḥ kopa samvartita īkṣaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | mahābāhuḥ: the long-armed Rama | matimatām varaḥ: the best among wise men | kopa samvartitekṣaṇaḥ: swirling his eyes in anger | kṛtavān: made | matim: a resolve | tasmin krūrām vāyase: in the matter of that ferocious cow. |

TRANSLATION

"Then, the long-armed Rama, the best among wise men, swirling his eyes in anger, made a resolve in the matter of that ferocious crow."

VERSE 30

स दर्भ संस्तरात् गृह्य ब्रह्मणो अस्त्रेण योजयः

sa darbha saṃstarāt gṛhya brahmaṇo astreṇa yojayaḥ

SYNONYMS

gṛhya: taking | darbham: a shoot of Kusa grass | samstarāt: from his bed (made of Kusa grass) | saḥ: that Rama | yojayat: used it to work | brāhmeṇa astreṇa: with Brahma's missile (a mythical weapon which deals infallible destruction) | sah: that | dīptaḥ: blazing shoot of grass | kālāgniriva: like fire destroying the world | jajvāla: flared up | dvijam abhimukham: in front of that bird. |

TRANSLATION

"Taking a blade of Kusa grass from his bed ( made of Kusa grass), Rama employed it to work with Brahma's missile (a mythical weapon which deals with infallible destruction). That blazing shoot of grass, resembling a fire destroying the world, flared up in front of that bird."

VERSE 31

स तम् प्रदीप्तम् चिक्षेप दर्भम् तम् वायसम् प्रति

sa tam pradīptam cikṣepa darbham tam vāyasam prati

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that Rama | cikṣepa: threw | tam: that | pradīptam: blazing | darbham: blade of Kusa grass | tam vāyasam prati: towards that crow | tataḥ: then | saḥ darbhaḥ: that blade of grass | anujagāma ha: chased | tam vāyasam: that crow | ambare: in the sky. |

TRANSLATION

"As Rama threw that blazing blade of Kusa grass towards that crow, that blade of grass went chasing that crow in the sky."

VERSE 32

अनुसृष्टः तदा कालो जगाम विविधाम् गतिम्

anusṛṣṭaḥ tadā kālo jagāma vividhām gatim

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | kākaḥ: the crow | anusṛṣṭaḥ: being chased | jagāma: wnet | vividhām: in many | gatim: a way | trāṇa kāmaḥ: seeking protection | (the crov) vicacāra ha: roamed | sarvam: all over | imam: this | lokam: world. |

TRANSLATION

"Then, while that blade of grass came chasing, that crow went flying in many a way. Seeking protection, it roamed all over the world."

VERSE 33

स पित्रा च परित्यक्तः सुरैः सर्वैः महर्षिभिः

sa pitrā ca parityaktaḥ suraiḥ sarvaiḥ maharṣibhiḥ

SYNONYMS

samparikramya: roaming | trīn: the three | lokān: worlds | saḥ: that crow | parityaktaḥ: was abandoned | pitrāca: by Indra | suraiśca: celestials | sa maharṣibhiḥ: along with sages | śaraṇamgataḥ: (and finally) sought refuge | tameva: in the same Rama. |

TRANSLATION

"Roaming the three worlds in search of a saviour, that crow was abandoned by Indra; its father, the celestials and the sages. Finally, it sought refuge in the same Rama."

VERSE 34

स तम् निपतितम् भूमौ शरण्यः शरणा गतम्

sa tam nipatitam bhūmau śaraṇyaḥ śaraṇā gatam

SYNONYMS

saḥ: kaakutthsaH = that Rama | śaraṇyaḥ: who affords protection | kṛpayā: by compassion | paryapālayat: protected | tam: that crow | nipatitam: which fell | bhūmau: on the floor | śaraṇāgatam: and sought for protection | vadhārhamapi: even though it was apt to be killed. |

TRANSLATION

"That Rama, who affords protection, was compassionate and protected that crow, which fell on the ground (in salutation to Rama) and sought for protection, eventhough it was apt to be killed."

VERSE 35

परिद्यूनम् विषण्णम् च स त्वम् आयान्तम् उक्तवान्

paridyūnam viṣaṇṇam ca sa tvam āyāntam uktavān

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that Rama | abravīt: spoke | tam: of that crow | āyāntam: which was coming | paridyūnam: exhausted | viṣaṇṇam: and dejected | na śakyam tu: It is not possible | kartum: to make | brāhmam astram: Brahma missile | mogham: a waste | tat: for that reason | ucyatām: tell me what to do. |

TRANSLATION

"Seeing that crow, coming exhausted and dejected, Rama said to it: 'It is not possible to make Brahma missile a waste. For this reason, tell me what to do now."

VERSE 36

हिनस्तु दक्षिणाक्षित्वच्छर इत्यथ सो।अब्रवीत्

hinastu dakṣiṇākṣitvacchara ityatha so|abravīt

SYNONYMS

37| atha: thereafter | saḥ: that crow | abravīt: said | iti: that | traccaraḥ: your arrow | hinastu: shoot | dakṣiṇākṣi: my right eye | tataḥ: then | hinantisma: shooted | dakṣiṇam: the right | akṣi: eye | tasya kākasya: of that crow | dattvā: by giving away | dakṣiṇam netram: its right eye | parirakṣitaḥ: saved | prāṇebhyaḥ: its lives. |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, that crow said "Let your arrow shoot my right eye." Then that blade of Kusa grass shooted the right eye of that crow. By giving away its right eye in that way, the crow saved its life."

VERSE 38

स रामाय नमस्कृत्वा राज्ञे दशरथाय च
विसृष्टस्तेन वीरेण प्रतिपेदे स्वमालयम्

sa rāmāya namaskṛtvā rājñe daśarathāya ca
visṛṣṭastena vīreṇa pratipede svamālayam

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that crow | namaskṛtyā: after saluting | rāmāya: Rama | daśarathāya ca: and Dasaratha | rājñe: the king | visṛṣṭaḥ: and discharged | tena vīreṇa: by that valiant Rama | pratipede: it reached | svam: its own | ālayam: abode. |

TRANSLATION

"After offering salutations to Rama and King Dasaratha and being discharged by that valiant Rama, the crow returned to its own abode."

VERSE 39

मत् कृते काक मात्रे अपि ब्रह्म अस्त्रम् समुदीरितम्
कस्मात् यो माम् हरत् त्वत्तः क्षमसे तम् मही पते

mat kṛte kāka mātre api brahma astram samudīritam
kasmāt yo mām harat tvattaḥ kṣamase tam mahī pate

SYNONYMS

mahīpate: O lord of the earth! matkR^ite = for my sake | brahmāstram: a Brahma's missile | samudīritam: was hurled | kākamātre: even at a crow | kasmāt: why | kṣamase: are you forgiving | tam: him | yaḥ: who | aharat: took away | : me | tvattaḥ: from you? |

TRANSLATION

"O lord of the earth! For my sake you hurled a Brahma's missile even at a crow. Why are you forgiving the one who has taken me away from you?"

VERSE 40

स कुरुष्व महाउत्साहम् कृपाम् मयि नर ऋषभ
त्वया नाथवती नाथ ह्यनाथा इव दृश्यते

sa kuruṣva mahāutsāham kṛpām mayi nara ṛṣabha
tvayā nāthavatī nātha hyanāthā iva dṛśyate

SYNONYMS

nararṣabha: O best among men! | saḥ: you as such | mahotsāhaḥ: having great strength | kuruṣva: endow | kṛpam: mercy | mayi: in me | nātha: O protector! | nāthavatī: She with a protector | tvayā: in you | dṛśyate: is being seen | anāthā iva: like the one without any protector. |

TRANSLATION

"O Rama the best among men! You, with great strength, annihilate the enemy and bestow your mercy on me. O Lord! She who has a protector in you, actually looks like one without any protector."

VERSE 41

आनृशंस्यम् परो धर्मः त्वत्त एव मया श्रुतः
जानामि त्वाम् महावीर्यम् महाउत्साहम् महाबलम्

ānṛśaṃsyam paro dharmaḥ tvatta eva mayā śrutaḥ
jānāmi tvām mahāvīryam mahāutsāham mahābalam

TRANSLATION

"You yourself told me that kindness is the best righteousness. I know you, having a great prowess, a great energy, and a great strength. I know your non-acquiescence, imperturbability, profoundness like an ocean, as Lord of the earth including the oceans and as equal to Indra the Lord of celestials."

VERSE 43

एवम् अस्त्रविदाम् श्रेष्ठः सत्त्ववान् बलवान् अपि
किम् अर्थम् अस्त्रम् रक्षह्सु न योजयसि राघव

evam astravidām śreṣṭhaḥ sattvavān balavān api
kim artham astram rakṣahsu na yojayasi rāghava

SYNONYMS

rāghava: O Rama! | balavānapi: eventhough you are stron | astravidām śreṣṭhaḥ: excellently skilled in archery | satyavān: and a truthful man | evam: thus | kimartham: why | nayojayasi: are you not employing | astram: your arrow | rakṣassu: on demons? |

TRANSLATION

"O Rama! Eventhough you are strong, excellently skilled in archery and a truthful man, why are you not utilizing your arrow on demons?"

VERSE 44

न नागा न अपि गन्धर्वा न असुरा न मरुत् गणाः
रामस्य समरे वेगम् शक्ताः प्रति समाधितुम्

na nāgā na api gandharvā na asurā na marut gaṇāḥ
rāmasya samare vegam śaktāḥ prati samādhitum

SYNONYMS

nāgaḥ: the serpent-demons | na śaktāḥ: are not capable | pratisamīhitum: of resisting | vegam: the onrush | rāmasya: of Rama | samare: in battle | gandharvā api: even divine musicians | na: are not capable. | asurāḥ: demons | marudgaṇāḥ: troops of storm-gods |

TRANSLATION

"Neither the serpent-demons, nor the divine musicians nor the demons nor the storm-gods are able to resist the onrush of Rama in battle."

VERSE 45

तस्या वीर्यवतः कश्चित् यदि अस्ति मयि सम्भ्रमः
किम् अर्थम् न शरैः तीक्ष्णैः क्षयम् नयति राक्षसान्

tasyā vīryavataḥ kaścit yadi asti mayi sambhramaḥ
kim artham na śaraiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ kṣayam nayati rākṣasān

SYNONYMS

vīryavataḥ tasya asti yadi: if the valiant Rama has | kaścit: any | sambhramaḥ: haste | may: in my case | kimartham: why | na nayati kṣayam: does he not destroy | rākṣasān: the demons | tīkṣṇaiḥ śaraiḥ: with his sharp arrows? |

TRANSLATION

"If the valiant Rama has any haste in my case, why does he not destroy the demons with his sharp arrows?!

VERSE 46

भ्रातुः आदेशम् आदाय लक्ष्मणो वा परम् तपः
कस्य हेतोः न माम् वीरः परित्राति महाबलः

bhrātuḥ ādeśam ādāya lakṣmaṇo vā param tapaḥ
kasya hetoḥ na mām vīraḥ paritrāti mahābalaḥ

kasya hetoḥ: for what reason | lakṣmaṇo vā: even Lakshmana | paramtapaḥ: the tormentator of enemies | mahābalaḥ: the mighty man | vīraḥ: and the valiant man | na paritrāti: does not protect | mām: me | ādāya: by taking | ādeśam: the command | bhrātruḥ: of his elder brother?" |

TRANSLATION

"For what reason, even Lakshmana the tormentator of enemies, the mighty man and the valiant man does not protect me, by taking the command of his elder brother?'

VERSE 47

यदि तौ पुरुष व्याघ्रौ वाय्व् इन्द्र सम तेजसौ
सुराणाम् अपि दुर्धर्षो किम् अर्थम् माम् उपेक्षतः

yadi tau puruṣa vyāghrau vāyv indra sama tejasau
surāṇām api durdharṣo kim artham mām upekṣataḥ

SYNONYMS

tau: those two brothers | puruṣavyāghrau: the tigers among men | vāyvagni samtejasau: with a sharpness equal to that of wind and fire | surāṇām durdharṣau yadi api: even if unconquerable by demons also |

TRANSLATION

Those two tigers among men, Rama and Lakshmana, with a sharpness equal to that of wind and fire, even if they are unconquerable by demons too, why are they neglecting me?"

VERSE 48

मम एव दुष्कृतम् किंचिन् महत् अस्ति न संशयः
समर्थाव् अपि तौ यन् माम् न अवेक्षेते परम् तपौ

mama eva duṣkṛtam kiṃcin mahat asti na saṃśayaḥ
samarthāv api tau yan mām na avekṣete param tapau

TRANSLATION

"There is not doubt that I would have committed a great sin, for which reason those two brothers Rama and Lakshmana the tormentators of enemies, even when capable , are neglecting me."

VERSE 49

वैदेह्या वचनम् श्रुत्वा करुणम् साशुभाषितम्
अथाब्रवीन्महातेजा हनुमान् मारुतात्मजः

vaidehyā vacanam śrutvā karuṇam sāśubhāṣitam
athābravīnmahātejā hanumān mārutātmajaḥ

TRANSLATION

Hearing the pitiable appeal Seetha with tears, Hanuma of great splendour and the son of wind-god spoke (as follows)

VERSE 50

त्वच्छोकविमुखो रामो देवि सत्येन ते शपे
रामे दुःखाभिपन्ने च लक्ष्मणः परितप्यते

tvacchokavimukho rāmo devi satyena te śape
rāme duḥkhābhipanne ca lakṣmaṇaḥ paritapyate

SYNONYMS

devi: O Seetha! | rāmaḥ: Rama | tvaccoka viukhaḥ: has grown averse to eveything else caused by grief towards you | śape: I swear | te: to you | satyena: by truth | rāme: (When) Rama | duḥkhābhipanne: is overpowered by grief | lakṣmaṇaḥ ca: Lakshmana too | paritapyate: is tormented (by grief). |

TRANSLATION

"O Seetha! Rama has grown averse to everything else, caused by grief towards you. I swear it to you by truth. When Rama is overpowered by grief; Lakshmana too gets tormented by grief."

VERSE 51

कथम् चिद्भवती दृष्टा न कालः परिदेवितुम्
इमम् मुहूर्तम् दुःखानाम् द्रक्ष्यस्यन्तमनिन्दिते

katham cidbhavatī dṛṣṭā na kālaḥ paridevitum
imam muhūrtam duḥkhānām drakṣyasyantamanindite

SYNONYMS

anindite: O faultless Seetha! | kathamcit: Somehow or other | bhavatī: you | dṛṣṭā: appeared | na kālaḥ: this is not the time | paridevitum: to lament | drakṣyasi: you will see | antam: the end | duḥkhānām: of your sorrows | imam muhūrtam: within this moment. |

TRANSLATION

"O faultless Seetha! Somehow or other, you have been discovered by me. This is not the time to lament. Your will see the end of your sorrow within a short time."

VERSE 52

तावुभौ पुरुषव्याघ्रौ राजपुत्रौ महाबलौ
त्वद्दर्शनकृतोत्साहौ लङ्काम् भस्मीकरिष्यतः

tāvubhau puruṣavyāghrau rājaputrau mahābalau
tvaddarśanakṛtotsāhau laṅkām bhasmīkariṣyataḥ

SYNONYMS

tau ubhau rājaputrau: those two princes | puruṣavyāghrau: the excellent among men | mahābalau: the mighty ones | tvaddarśanakṛtotsāhau: and who are eager to see you | laṅkām bhasmī kariṣyataḥ: with reduce Lanka to ashes. |

TRANSLATION

"Those two mighty princes, the excellent among men, are eager to see you and they will reduce Lanka to ashes."

VERSE 53

हत्वा च समरे क्रूतम् रावणम् सहबान्धवम्
राघवस्त्वाम् विशालाक्षि नेष्यति स्वाम् पुरीम् प्रति

hatvā ca samare krūtam rāvaṇam sahabāndhavam
rāghavastvām viśālākṣi neṣyati svām purīm prati

SYNONYMS

viśālākṣi: O large eyed Seetha! | hatvā: killing | krūram: the cruel | rāvaṇam: Ravana | sahabāndhavam: along with his relatives | rāghavaḥ: Rama | neṣyati: will take | tvām: you | svām purīm prati: to his own city. |

TRANSLATION

"O large-eyed Seetha! Killing the cruel Ravana along with his relatives in battle, Rama will take you back to his own city."

VERSE 54

ब्रूहि यद्राघवो वाच्यो लक्ष्मणश्च महाबलः
सुग्रीवो वापि तेजस्वी हरयो।अपि समागताः

brūhi yadrāghavo vācyo lakṣmaṇaśca mahābalaḥ
sugrīvo vāpi tejasvī harayo|api samāgatāḥ

SYNONYMS

brūhi: tell me | yat vācyaḥ: what to be expressed | rāghavaḥ: to Rama | mahābalaḥ lakṣmaṇaśca: or to the mighty Lakshmana | tejasvī sugrīvovāpi: or to the splendorous Sugreeva | harayo'pi: samaagataaH = or to even the monkeys assembled (there). |

TRANSLATION

"Tell me what to be expressed to Rama or to the mighty Lakshmana or to the splendourous Sugreeva or even to the other monkeys assembled there."

VERSE 55

इत्युक्तवति तस्मिंस्तु सीता सुरसुतोपमा
उवाच शोकसंतप्ता हनुमन्तं प्लवंगमम्

ityuktavati tasmiṃstu sītā surasutopamā
uvāca śokasaṃtaptā hanumantaṃ plavaṃgamam

VERSE 56

कौसल्या लोक भर्तारम् सुषुवे यम् मनस्विनी
तम् मम अर्थे सुखम् पृच्छ शिरसा च अभिवादय

kausalyā loka bhartāram suṣuve yam manasvinī
tam mama arthe sukham pṛccha śirasā ca abhivādaya

SYNONYMS

madarthe: On my behalf | abhivādayaca śirasā: salute by bowing your head | pṛccha: and ask | sukham: about the welfare of | tam: that Rama | lokabhartāram: the lord of the worlds | yam: whom | manasvinī k͟hausalyā: the magnanimous Kausalya | suṣuva: gave birth. |

TRANSLATION

"On my behalf, salute by bowing your head and ask about the welfare of Rama, the Lord of the worlds, whom the magnanimous Kausalya gave birth."

VERSE 57

स्रजः च सर्व रत्नानि प्रिया याः च वर अन्गनाः
ऐश्वर्यम् च विशालायाम् पृथिव्याम् अपि दुर्लभम्

srajaḥ ca sarva ratnāni priyā yāḥ ca vara anganāḥ
aiśvaryam ca viśālāyām pṛthivyām api durlabham

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

(On my behalf, ask about the welfare of ) Lakshmana, that good child of Sumitra who, having renounced the wreaths of flowers, all the riches, pleasant and beautiful girls and even the prosperity difficult to be obtained in this extensive world, offered his profound respects to and pacified his father and mother, followed Rama to exile."

VERSE 59

आनुकूल्येन धर्म आत्मा त्यक्त्वा सुखम् अनुत्तमम्
अनुगच्छति काकुत्स्थम् भ्रातरम् पालयन् वने

ānukūlyena dharma ātmā tyaktvā sukham anuttamam
anugacchati kākutstham bhrātaram pālayan vane

SYNONYMS

tyaktvā: renouncing | anuttamam: a great | sukham: comfort | dharmātmā: the righteous Lakshmana | anugacchati: followed | pālayam: protecting kaakutthsam = Rama | bhrātaram: his elder brother | anukūlyena: acting in an affectionate way towards him | vane: in the forest. |

TRANSLATION

"Renouncing a great comfort, the righteous Lakshmana, acting in an affectionate manner towards Rama, followed him, watching over him in the forest."

VERSE 60

सिम्ह स्कन्धो महाबाहुः मनस्वी प्रिय दर्शनः
पितृवत् वर्तते रामे मातृवन् माम् समाचरन्

simha skandho mahābāhuḥ manasvī priya darśanaḥ
pitṛvat vartate rāme mātṛvan mām samācaran

SYNONYMS

simhaskandhaḥ: Lakshmana | mahābāhuḥ: mighty armed | mansvī: steady minded | priyadarśinaḥ: and having pleasant looks | vartate: who behaves | rāme: towards Rama | pitṛvat: as towards his father | samācaran: and look to | mām: me | mātṛvat: as his own mother. |

TRANSLATION

"Lakshmana, who has broad shoulders like that ofa lion, mighty-armed, steady-minded and having pleasant looks, behaves towards Rama as towards his father and looks to me as his own mother."

VERSE 61

प्रियमाणाम् तदा वीरो न तु माम् वेद लक्ष्मणः
वृद्ध उपसेवी लक्ष्मीवान् शक्तो न बहु भाषिता

priyamāṇām tadā vīro na tu mām veda lakṣmaṇaḥ
vṛddha upasevī lakṣmīvān śakto na bahu bhāṣitā

SYNONYMS

vīraḥ: the valiant | lakṣmaṇaḥ: Lakshmana | tadā: then | na veda: did not know | mām: me | hriyamāṇām: as being taken away (by Ravana) | vṛddhopasevī: He serves elders | lakṣmīvān: He has splendour | na bahubhāṣitā: He does not talk much | śaktaḥ: (though) capable me shashurasy = to Dasaratha | sadṛśaḥ: he is suitably well | priyaḥ: a beloved | śreṣṭhaḥ: and best | rājaputraḥ: prince. |

TRANSLATION

"The valiant Lakshmana, on that day of occurrence, did not know that I was being taken away by Ravana. He serves elders. He possesses a splendour. Though capable, he does not talk much. To Dasaratha, my father-in-law, he is his replica a beloved and the best prince."

VERSE 62

मत्तः प्रियतरो नित्यम् भ्राता रामस्य लक्ष्मणः

mattaḥ priyataro nityam bhrātā rāmasya lakṣmaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

lakṣmaṇaḥ: Lakshmana | bhrātā: the younger brother | rāmasya: of Rama | nityam: is always | priyataraḥ: the one | mam: to me | vīryavān: the energetic Lakshmana | udvahati: carries out | tām: that | yasyām: whatever | dhuri: load of work | niyuktaḥ: is entrusted. |

TRANSLATION

"Lakshmana, the younger brother of Rama is the one who is dearer to me always. That energetic Lakshmana carries out well, whatever load of work is entrusted to him"

VERSE 63

यम् दृष्ट्वा राघवो न एव वृद्धम् आर्यम् अनुस्मरत्

yam dṛṣṭvā rāghavo na eva vṛddham āryam anusmarat

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | yam: whom | rāghavaḥ: Rama | na anusmaret: does not recollect | vṛttam: (his) deceased | āryam: father | saḥ: that Lakshmana | vaktavyaḥ: is to be asked | kuśalam: about his well-being | mama vacanāt: as my word | mama arthāya: on my behalf. |

TRANSLATION

"Seeing whom, Rama ceases to recollect his deceased father, that Lakshmana is to be asked about his well-being, as my word and on my behalf."

VERSE 64

मृदुः नित्यम् शुचिः दक्षः प्रियो रामस्य लक्ष्मणः

mṛduḥ nityam śuciḥ dakṣaḥ priyo rāmasya lakṣmaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

65| vānaraśreṣṭha: O Hanuma | harisattama: and the best of monkeys! | tvam: you | pramāṇam: are the model | asmin kāryaniryoge: for fulfilling this act (of addressing him) | yathā bhavet: in such a way | lakṣmaṇaḥ: that Lakshmana | mṛduḥ: the mild | nityam: ever | śuciḥ: pure | dakṣaḥ: and clever | priyaḥ: darling | rāmasya: of Rama | duḥkhakṣaya karaḥ: may bring my sorrows to an end. |

TRANSLATION

"O Hanuma, the excellent of monkeys and the best of monkeys! you are the model for fulfilling this act of addressing him in such a way that Lakshmana, the mild, every-pure and clever darling of Rama may bring my sorrows to an end."

VERSE 66

राघवस्त्वत्समारम्भान्मयि यत्नपरो भवेत्
इदम् ब्रूयाः च मे नाथम् शूरम् रामम् पुनः पुनः

rāghavastvatsamārambhānmayi yatnaparo bhavet
idam brūyāḥ ca me nātham śūram rāmam punaḥ punaḥ

tvatsamārambhāt: by your effort | rāghavaḥ: Rama | bhavet: will become | yatnaparaḥ: a diligent man | mayi: in my case | brūyāḥ: tell | idam: this | punaḥ punaḥ: again and again | rāmam: to Rama | me nātham: my lord | śūram: and the hero. |

TRANSLATION

"Depending on your effort, Rama will be more active with his effort the following words again and again to Rama, my Lord and the hero:"

VERSE 67

जीवितम् धारयिष्यामि मासम् दशरथ आत्मज
ऊर्ध्वम् मासान् न जीवेयम् सत्येन अहम् ब्रवीमि ते

jīvitam dhārayiṣyāmi māsam daśaratha ātmaja
ūrdhvam māsān na jīveyam satyena aham bravīmi te

SYNONYMS

daśarathātmaja: O Rama! | dhārayiṣyāmi: I shall hold | jīvitam: my life | māsam: for a month | na jīveyam: I cannot survive | ūrdhvam: after | māsāt: a month | aham: I | bravīmi: am telling | te: you | satyena: by truth. |

TRANSLATION

"O Rama! I shall hold my life for a month. I cannot survive after a month I am telling you the truth."

VERSE 68

रावणेन उपरुद्धाम् माम् निकृत्या पाप कर्मणा
त्रातुम् अर्हसि वीर त्वम् पातालात् इव कौशिकीम्

rāvaṇena uparuddhām mām nikṛtyā pāpa karmaṇā
trātum arhasi vīra tvam pātālāt iva kauśikīm

SYNONYMS

vīra: O valiant man! | tvam: you | arhasi: are required | trātum: to protect | mām: me | uparuddhām: who is detained | rāvaṇena: by Ravana | pāpakarmaṇā: the criminal | nikṛtyā: with humiliation | kauśikīmiva: (as you protected) Indra the Lord of celestials and Lakshmi the goddess of prosperity | pātālāt: from the abode of serpents and demons. |

TRANSLATION

"O valiant man! You are required to rescue me, detained (as I am) by Ravana the criminal and subjected to humiliation, as you (as Lord Vishnu) earlier protected Indra the Lord of celestials and Lakshmi the goddess of prosperity from the abode of servants and demons."

VERSE 69

ततो वस्त्र गतम् मुक्त्वा दिव्यम् चूडा मणिम् शुभम्
प्रदेयो राघवाय इति सीता हनुमते ददौ

tato vastra gatam muktvā divyam cūḍā maṇim śubham
pradeyo rāghavāya iti sītā hanumate dadau

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | muktvā: untying | śubham: the bright | divyam: divine | cūḍāmaṇim: jewel for her head | vastragatam: tied in her garment | sītā: Seetha | dadau: gave (it) | hanumate: to Hanuma | iti: saying | pradeyaḥ: that it might be delivered | rāghavāya: to Rama. |

TRANSLATION

Then, untying the bright devine jewel for her head tied in her garment, Seetha gave it to Hanuma, saying that it might be handed over to Rama.

VERSE 70

प्रतिगृह्य ततो वीरो मणि रत्नम् अनुत्तमम्
अन्गुल्या योजयामास न हि अस्या प्राभवत् भुजः

pratigṛhya tato vīro maṇi ratnam anuttamam
angulyā yojayāmāsa na hi asyā prābhavat bhujaḥ

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

Taking the excellent jewel, the valiant Hanuma thereupon fitted it to his finger, since his arm (eventhough he had assumed his former tiny form), was not fitting to it properly.

VERSE 71

मणि रत्नम् कपि वरः प्रतिगृह्य अभिवाद्य च
सीताम् प्रदक्षिणम् कृत्वा प्रणतः पार्श्वतः स्थितः

maṇi ratnam kapi varaḥ pratigṛhya abhivādya ca
sītām pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā praṇataḥ pārśvataḥ sthitaḥ

TRANSLATION

Receiving that jewel, Hanuma the best among the monkeys, offered his salutation to seetha, by engaging himself in circumambulation and stood aside with humbleness.

VERSE 72

हर्षेण महता युक्तः सीता दर्शनजेन सः
हृदयेन गतो रामम् शरीरेण तु विष्ठितः

harṣeṇa mahatā yuktaḥ sītā darśanajena saḥ
hṛdayena gato rāmam śarīreṇa tu viṣṭhitaḥ

Filled with a great delight, born out of Seetha's discovery by him, that Hanuma mentally sought (the presence) of Rama but stood there with just his physical body.

VERSE 73

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे अष्टत्रिंशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye sundarakāṇḍe aṣṭatriṃśaḥ sargaḥ

Taking that excellent and highly venerable jewel, worn by Seetha and by its influence resembling one who was shaken by a blast coming from the top of a huge mountain, Hanuma was mentally pleased and set out for crossing the ocean in his return journey.
