VERSE 1

तस्य तत् वचनम् श्रुत्वा दशग्रीवो महाबलः
देश काल हितम् वाक्यम् भ्रातुः उत्तमम् अब्रवीत्

tasya tat vacanam śrutvā daśagrīvo mahābalaḥ
deśa kāla hitam vākyam bhrātuḥ uttamam abravīt

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | tat vacanam: those words | deśa kāla hitam: suitable for place and time | tasya mahāmanaḥ: spoken by that high-souled Vibhishana | bhrātuḥ: his brother | daśagrīvaḥ: Ravana | abravīt: spoke | vākyam: the (following) words | uttaram: in reply. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those words, which were aprropriate for that place and time, spoken by that hih-souled Vibhishana, his brother, Ravana spoke the following words in reply:

VERSE 2

सम्यग् उक्तम् हि भवता दूत वध्या विगर्हिता
अवश्यम् तु वधात् अन्यः क्रियताम् अस्य निग्रहः

samyag uktam hi bhavatā dūta vadhyā vigarhitā
avaśyam tu vadhāt anyaḥ kriyatām asya nigrahaḥ

SYNONYMS

uktamhi: It has been indeed told | samyak: well | bhavatā: by you | dūtavadhyā: killing of an envoy | vigrahitā: is forbidden | anyaḥ: another | nigrahaḥ: punishment | vadhāt: other than killing | avaśyam kriyatām: needs be certainly meted out | asya: to him. |

TRANSLATION

"You have spoken well indeed that killing of an envoy is forbidden. Another punishment other than killing needs be certainly meted out to him."

VERSE 3

कपीनाम् किल लान्गूलम् इष्टम् भवति भूषणम्
तत् अस्य दीप्यताम् शीघ्रम् तेन दग्धेन गच्छतु

kapīnām kila lāngūlam iṣṭam bhavati bhūṣaṇam
tat asya dīpyatām śīghram tena dagdhena gacchatu

SYNONYMS

kila: It is so said that | kapīnām: to monkeys | bhavati: it is possible | lāṅgūlam: that a tail | iṣṭam: is a beloved | bhūṣaṇam: ornament | tat lāṅgūlam: let that tail | asya: of Hanuma | dīpyatām: be burnt | śīghram: immediately | gacchatu: let him go | dagdhena tena: with a burnt tail. |

TRANSLATION

"It is said that a tail is possibly a beloved ornament for the monkeys. Let his tail be burn immediately. Let him go with a burnt tail."

VERSE 4

ततः पश्यन्तु इमम् दीनम् अन्ग वैरूप्य कर्शितम्
समित्रा ज्ञातयः सर्वे बान्धवाः ससुहृज् जनाः

tataḥ paśyantu imam dīnam anga vairūpya karśitam
samitrā jñātayaḥ sarve bāndhavāḥ sasuhṛj janāḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | sarve: (Let) all | bāndhavāḥ: his relatives | samitrajñātāḥ: together with his friends and kinsmen | sasuhṛjjanāḥ: along with his amicable persons | paśyantu: see | imam: him | aṅgavairūpyakarśitano: injured iwth his deformed limbs | dīnam: miserable. |

TRANSLATION

"Let all his relatives together with his friends, kinsmen and amicable persons then see him miserably injured with his deformed limbs."

VERSE 5

आज्ञापयत् राक्षस इन्द्रः पुरम् सर्वम् सचत्वरम्
लान्गूलेन प्रदीप्तेन रक्षोभिः परिणीयताम्

ājñāpayat rākṣasa indraḥ puram sarvam sacatvaram
lāngūlena pradīptena rakṣobhiḥ pariṇīyatām

SYNONYMS

rākṣasendraḥ: Ravana | ājñāpayat: ordered | pariṇīyatām: that let him be carried around | lāṇgūlena: with his burning tail | rakṣobhiḥ: by the demons | sarvam: in the entire | puram: city | sacatvaram: with its cross-roads. |

TRANSLATION

Ravana ordered that let the monkey be carried around with his burning tail by the demons in the entire city around its cross-roads."

VERSE 6

तस्य तत् वचनम् श्रुत्वा राक्षसाः कोप कर्कशाः
वेष्टन्ते तस्य लान्गूलम् जीर्णैः कार्पासिकैः पटैः

tasya tat vacanam śrutvā rākṣasāḥ kopa karkaśāḥ
veṣṭante tasya lāngūlam jīrṇaiḥ kārpāsikaiḥ paṭaiḥ

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | tat vacanam: those words | tasya: of Ravana | rākṣasāḥ: the demons | kopakarkaśāḥ: hard-tempered with their wrath | jīrṇaiḥ kārpāsakaiḥ paṭaiḥ: with old ragged garments. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those words of Ravana, the demons, hard-tempered with their wrath, wrapped, up old ragged clothes around Hanuma's tail.

VERSE 7

सम्वेष्ट्यमाने लान्गूले व्यवर्धत महाकपिः
शुष्कम् इन्धनम् आसाद्य वनेष्व् इव हुत अशनः

samveṣṭyamāne lāngūle vyavardhata mahākapiḥ
śuṣkam indhanam āsādya vaneṣv iva huta aśanaḥ

SYNONYMS

lāṅgūle samveṣṭyamāne: while his tail was wrapped around with cottong tatters | mahākapiḥ: Hanuma | vyavardhata: increased his body | hutāśanaḥ iva: like a fire | āsādya: after catching | śuṣkam indhanam: dry wood | vaneṣu: in forests. |

TRANSLATION

While his tail was being wrapped around with cotton tatters, Hanuma proliferating, soon after catching dry wood in forests.

VERSE 8

तैलेन परिषिच्य अथ ते अग्निम् तत्र अवपातयन्
लान्गूलेन प्रदीप्तेन राक्षसान् तान् अपातयत्

tailena pariṣicya atha te agnim tatra avapātayan
lāngūlena pradīptena rākṣasān tān apātayat

SYNONYMS

atha: then | pariṣicya: sprinkling | tailena: oil | te: they | abhyapātayan: set out | agnim: fire | tatra: on that tail | bālasūryasamānanaḥ: Hanuma | roṣāmarṣaparītātmā: and with his mind filled with rage and impatience | pradīptena lāṇgūlena: and with his burning tail | apātayat: threw down | tān rākṣasān: those demons. |

TRANSLATION

The demons sprinkled oil and set out fire on that tail. Then, Hanuma, with his face resembling a rising sun with his mind filled with anger and impatience and with his burning tail, threw those demons down.

VERSE 9

लाङ्गूलम् सम्प्रदीप्तम् तु द्रष्टुम् तस्य हनूमतः

lāṅgūlam sampradīptam tu draṣṭum tasya hanūmataḥ

SYNONYMS

draṣṭum: to see | sampradītptam: the burning | lāṅgūlam: tail | tasya hanūmataḥ: of that Hanuma | niśācarāḥ: the demons | sahastrī bāla vṛddhāśca: together with their women | jagmuḥ: went | prītāḥ: delighted. |

TRANSLATION

To see the burning tail of that Hanuma, the delighted demons together with their women, chldren and elders went there.

VERSE 10

स भूयः सम्गतैः क्रूरै राकसैः हरि सत्तमः

sa bhūyaḥ samgataiḥ krūrai rākasaiḥ hari sattamaḥ

SYNONYMS

nibaddhaḥ: tied down | samgataiḥ: coming together | saḥ vīraḥ harisattamaḥ: that heroic Hanuma | kṛtavān: made up | matim: his mind | tatkāla sadṛśīm: appropriate for that occasion (as follows): |

TRANSLATION

Tied down again by the cruel demons, coming together, the heroic Hanuma the foremost among monkeys made up his mind appropriate for that occasion (as follows):

VERSE 11

कामम् खलु न मे शक्ता निबधस्य अपि राक्षसाः

kāmam khalu na me śaktā nibadhasya api rākṣasāḥ

SYNONYMS

nibaddhasyāpi: though I have been tied down | rākṣasāḥ: those demons | na śaktāḥ kāmam khalu: cannot do anything they wish | me: against me | chitvā: breaking | pāśān: the nooses | punaḥ: again | aham: I | samutpatya: by jumping up | hanyām: can kill | imān: them. |

TRANSLATION

"Though I have been tied down, those demons cannot do whatever they wish to do against me. Breaking the ties, I can fly up and kill them."

VERSE 12

यदिभर्तुर्हतार्थाय चरन्तम् भर्तृशासनात्

yadibharturhatārthāya carantam bhartṛśāsanāt

SYNONYMS

ete durātmanaḥ yadi: If these evil minded demons | badhnanti: fasten | carantam: me | hitārthāya: for the benefit | bhartuḥ: of Rama | bhartṛśāsanāt: because of the command of their lord | na niṣkṛtiḥ: no rebuff | kṛtā: has been done | me: to me. |

TRANSLATION

"If these evil-minded demons fasten me who is acting for the good of Rama my lord, because of the command by their lord, no rebuff has been done to me."

VERSE 13

सर्वेषाम् एव पर्याप्तो राक्षसानाम् अहम् युधि

sarveṣām eva paryāpto rākṣasānām aham yudhi

SYNONYMS

14| ahami: I | paryāptaḥ: am adequate | sarveṣāmeva rākṣasānām: even for all the demons | yudhi: in battle | kimtu: but | prītyartham: for the delight | rāmasya: of Rama | īdṛśam: such | laṅkā: Lanka | punareva: again | bhavet: becomes | cārayitavyā: fit to be espionaged | iti: for this reason | viṣahiṣye: I am putting up with it. |

TRANSLATION

"I am adequate enough to kill all these demons in battle. But, for the delight of Rama, such city of Lanka is fit to be espionaged again. For this reason, I am putting up with it."

VERSE 15

रात्रौ न हि सुदृष्टा मे दुर्ग कर्म विधानतः
अवश्यम् एव द्रष्टव्या मया लन्का निशा क्षये

rātrau na hi sudṛṣṭā me durga karma vidhānataḥ
avaśyam eva draṣṭavyā mayā lankā niśā kṣaye

SYNONYMS

laṅkā: Lanka | na hi sudṛṣṭā: was not indeed observed well | rātrau: during night-time | durgakarmavidhānataḥ: as to the particulars of specifications of the fort | meva: surely | draṣṭavyā: it is to be seen | mayā: by me | niśākṣaye: in the day-time. |

TRANSLATION

"Lanka was not indeed observed well as to the particulars of specifications of the fort, when it was seen by me during the night. Surely, it is to be seen by me during the day-time."

VERSE 16

कामम् बन्धैः च मे भूयः पुच्छस्य उद्दीपनेन च
पीडाम् कुर्वन्तु रक्षांसि न मे अस्ति मनसः श्रमः

kāmam bandhaiḥ ca me bhūyaḥ pucchasya uddīpanena ca
pīḍām kurvantu rakṣāṃsi na me asti manasaḥ śramaḥ

SYNONYMS

me: to me | baddhasya: who has been tied down | bhūyaḥ: again | rakṣāmsi: let the demons | kurvantu pīḍām: torment me | kāmam: as they wish | uddīpanenaca: by burning also | pucchasya: my tail | me manasaḥ: to my mind | nāsti: there will be no | śramaḥ: travail. |

TRANSLATION

"Let the demons tie me down of again and torment me as they wish, by burning my tail. There will be no travail to my mind."

VERSE 17

ततः ते सम्वृत आकारम् सत्त्ववन्तम् महाकपिम्
परिगृह्य ययुः हृष्टा राक्षसाः कपि कुन्जरम्

tataḥ te samvṛta ākāram sattvavantam mahākapim
parigṛhya yayuḥ hṛṣṭā rākṣasāḥ kapi kunjaram

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | te hṛṣṭāḥ rākṣasāḥ: those delighted demons | yayuḥ: went | parigṛhya: taking | mahākapim: Hanuma | savṛtākāram: who concealed all types of feelings | sattvavantam: who was strong | kapikuṅjaram: and the foremost among monkeys. |

TRANSLATION

Then, those delighted demons went, seizing Hanuma, who concealed all types of his feelings, who was strong and foremost among monkeys.

VERSE 18

शन्ख भेरी निनादैः तैः घोषयन्तः स्व कर्मभिः
राक्षसाः क्रूर कर्माणः चारयन्ति स्म ताम् पुरीम्

śankha bherī ninādaiḥ taiḥ ghoṣayantaḥ sva karmabhiḥ
rākṣasāḥ krūra karmāṇaḥ cārayanti sma tām purīm

SYNONYMS

śaṇkhabherī ninādaiśca: sounding couches and kettle-drums | ghoṣayantaḥ: proclaiming | svakarmabhiḥ: the acts of Hanuma | rākṣasāḥ: the demons | krūrakarmāṇaḥ: performing terrible deeds | cārayantisma: dragged him | tām purim: throughout that city. |

TRANSLATION

Sounding couches and kettle-drums and proclaining the acts of Hanuma like his damaging of the pleasure-garden, the demons performing terrible deeds, dragged Hanuma through out that city.

VERSE 19

अन्वीयमानो रक्षोभिर्ययौ सुखमरिंदमः
हनुमान् चारयामास राक्षसानाम् महापुरीम्

anvīyamāno rakṣobhiryayau sukhamariṃdamaḥ
hanumān cārayāmāsa rākṣasānām mahāpurīm

SYNONYMS

anvīyamānaḥ: accompanied | rakṣobhiḥ: by demons | hanumān: Hanuma | arimdamaḥ: the annihilator of enemies | yayau: went | sukham: happily | cārayāmāsa: and roamed about | mahāpurīm: in the great city | rākṣasānām: of the demons. |

TRANSLATION

Accompanied by demons, Hanuma the annihilator of enemies, went happily and roamed about in that great city of demons.

VERSE 20

अथ अपश्यत् विमानानि विचित्राणि महाकपिः
सम्वृतान् भूमि भागान् च सुविभक्तान् च चत्वरान्

atha apaśyat vimānāni vicitrāṇi mahākapiḥ
samvṛtān bhūmi bhāgān ca suvibhaktān ca catvarān

SYNONYMS

atha: then | mahākapiḥ: Hanuma | apaśyat: saw | vicitrāṇi: wonderful | vimānāni: houses | samvṛtān: wrapped up | bhūmi bhāgāmśca: plots of land | suvibhaktān: well-parted | catvarān: cross-ways. |

TRANSLATION

Then, Hanuma saw some wonderful house some wrapped up plots of land and well parted cross ways.

VERSE 21

वीथीश्च गृहसम्बाधाः कपिः शृङ्गटकानि च
तथा रथ्योपरथ्याश्च तथैव गृहकान्तरान्

vīthīśca gṛhasambādhāḥ kapiḥ śṛṅgaṭakāni ca
tathā rathyoparathyāśca tathaiva gṛhakāntarān

SYNONYMS

kapiḥ: Hanuma | pavanātmajaḥ: the son of wind-god | dadarśa: saw | vīthīḥ: streets | gṛhasambādhāḥ: congested with houses | śṛṇgāṭakāni: places where several roads meet | tathā: and | rathyoparathyāśca: high-ways as also approach-roads | gṛhakāntarān: small inner apartments | gṛhāmśca: and palaces | meghasamkāśān: appearing in multitudes like clouds. |

TRANSLATION

Hanuma, the son of wind-god, saw streets congested with dwellings, places where several roads meet, high-ways as also approach-roads, small inner apartments and palaces appearing in multitudes, like clouds.

VERSE 22

चत्वरेषु चतुष्केषु राज मार्गे तथैव च

catvareṣu catuṣkeṣu rāja mārge tathaiva ca

SYNONYMS

sarve: all | rākṣasāḥ: the demons | ghoṣayanti: proclaimed | catvareṣu: in cross-roads | catuṣkeṣu: four-pillared temples | tathaiva ca: and | rājamārge: royal high-ways | kapim cārikaḥ iti: saying that Hanuma was a spy. |

TRANSLATION

All the demons proclaimed in cross roads, four-pillared temples and in royal high-ways, saying that Hanuma was a spy.

VERSE 23

स्त्रीबालवृद्धा निर्जग्मुस्तत्र तत्र कुतूहलात्

strībālavṛddhā nirjagmustatra tatra kutūhalāt

SYNONYMS

strībāla vṛddhāḥ: women | nirjagmuḥ: came out | tatra tatra: from their respective dwellings | kutūhalāt: with an eagerness | didṛkṣavaḥ: to see | tam hanumantam: that Hanuma | pradīpila lāṅgmulam: with his burnign tail. |

TRANSLATION

Women, children and old people came out from their respective dwellings, with an eagerness to see that Hanuma with his burning tail.

VERSE 24

दीप्यमाने ततः तस्य लान्गूल अग्रे हनूमतः

dīpyamāne tataḥ tasya lāngūla agre hanūmataḥ

SYNONYMS

hanumataḥ lāṇgullāgre: (while) the tip of Hanuma's tail | dīpyamāne: was being ignited | tatra: there | tāḥ rākṣasyaḥ: those female-demons | virūpākṣyaḥ: with monstrous eyes | tataḥ: then | śaśamsuḥ: inforemed | tat apriyam: that unpleasant thing | devyāḥ: to Seetha the princess. |

TRANSLATION

While the tip of Hanuma's tail was being ignited by the demons there, those female-demons with monstrous eyes then informed that unpleasant matter to Seetha, the princess.

VERSE 25

यः त्वया कृत सम्वादः सीते ताम्र मुखः कपिः

yaḥ tvayā kṛta samvādaḥ sīte tāmra mukhaḥ kapiḥ

SYNONYMS

sīte: O Seetha! | sa eṣāḥ kapiḥ: that monkey | yaḥ: who | tāmra mukhaḥ: was having a red face | kṛta samvādaḥ: and who had conversation | tvayā: with you | pariṇīyate: is being moved around | pradīptena lāṇgūlena: with his ignited tail |

TRANSLATION

"O Seetha! That monkey with a red face, who had a conversation with you, is being moved around in the city, with his ignited tail."

VERSE 26

श्रुत्वा तत् वचनम् क्रूरम् आत्म अपहरण उपमम्

śrutvā tat vacanam krūram ātma apaharaṇa upamam

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | tat krūram vacanam: that cruel news | ātmāpaharaṇopamam: which was equal to the news of her carrying away (by Ravana) | vaidehī: Seetha | śoka samtaptā: was tormented with grief | upāgamat: and paid homage | hutāśanam: the fire-god. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing that cruel news, which created as much sorrow as when she was carried away by Ravana, Seetha was tormented with grief and started to pay homage to the fire-god.

VERSE 27

मन्गला अभिमुखी तस्य सा तदा आसीन् महाकपेः

mangalā abhimukhī tasya sā tadā āsīn mahākapeḥ

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | : she | āsīt: was maN^galaabhimukhii = wishing for the welfare | mahākapeḥ: of Hanuma | viśālākṣi: the large-eyed Seetha | prayatā: with her devoted self | upatasthe: worshipped | havya vāhanam: the fire-god. |

TRANSLATION

Then, the large-eyed Seetha, wishing for the welfare of Hanuma, prayed the fire-god with her devoted self.

VERSE 28

यदि अस्ति पति शुश्रूषा यदि अस्ति चरितम् तपः

yadi asti pati śuśrūṣā yadi asti caritam tapaḥ

SYNONYMS

asti yadi: If I have done | patiśuśrūṣā: any service to my husband | astiyadi caritam: if I have done | tapaḥ: a penance | asti ca yadi: if I am | eka patnītvam: a faithful wife | tvam: you | bhava: be | śītaḥ: cool | hanumataḥ: to Hanuma. |

TRANSLATION

"If I have done any service to my husband, if I have performed a penance and if I am a faithful wife, please be cool to Hanuma."

VERSE 29

यदि कश्चित् अनुक्रोशः तस्य मयि अस्ति धीमतः

yadi kaścit anukrośaḥ tasya mayi asti dhīmataḥ

SYNONYMS

dhīmataḥ tasya yadi: if the wise Rama | kimcit: has even a little | anukrośaḥ: of Kindness | mayi: towards me | yadi vā me: and if towards me | bhāgya śeṣaḥ: some good fortune is remaining | bhava: be | śītaḥ: cool | hanūmataḥ: to Hanuma. |

TRANSLATION

"If the wise Rama has even a little of kindness to me and if I have still some good fortune remaining to my credit, please be cool to Hanuma."

VERSE 30

यदि माम् वृत्त सम्पन्नाम् तत् समागम लालसाम्

yadi mām vṛtta sampannām tat samāgama lālasām

SYNONYMS

saḥ dharmātmā yadi: If that virtuous Rama | vijānāti: understands | mām: me | vṛttasampannam: as endowed with a good moral conduct | tatsamāgama lālasām: ardently desirous of meeting him | bhava: be | śītaḥ: cool | hanumataḥ: to Hanuma. |

TRANSLATION

"If that virtuous Rama recognises me as one,, who is endowed with a good moral conduct and who is ardently desirous of meeting him, please be cool to Hanuma."

VERSE 31

यदि माम् तारयति आर्यः सुग्रीवः सत्य सम्गरः

yadi mām tārayati āryaḥ sugrīvaḥ satya samgaraḥ

SYNONYMS

āryaḥ yadi: (If) the venerable | sugrīvaḥ: Sugreeva | satya samgaraḥ: true to his promise | me tārayet: can make me traverse | asmāt duḥ khāmbu samrodhāt: from this ocean of sorrow | bhava: be | śītaḥ: cool | hanūmataḥ: to Hanuma. |

TRANSLATION

"If the venerable Sugreeva, true to his promise, can make me traverse from this ocean of sorrow, please be cool to Hanuma."

VERSE 32

ततः तीक्ष्ण अर्चिः अव्यग्रः प्रदक्षिण शिखो अनलः

tataḥ tīkṣṇa arciḥ avyagraḥ pradakṣiṇa śikho analaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | analaḥ: the fire-god | śamsanniva: as though informing | mṛgaśabākṣyāḥ: the fawn-eyed | kapeḥ śivam: about the welfare of Hanuma | jajvāla: sone brilliantly | tīkṣṇārciḥ: with sharp flames | avyagraḥ: undisturbed | pradakṣiṇa śikhaḥ: shooting out pointed flames towards the right. |

TRANSLATION

Then, the fire-god, as though informing the fawn-eyed Seetha about the well-being of Hanuma, shone brightly with sharp flames, undisteurbed and shooting out pointed flames towards the right.

VERSE 33

हनुमज्जनकश्चापि पुच्छानलयुतो।अनिलः

hanumajjanakaścāpi pucchānalayuto|anilaḥ

SYNONYMS

anilaḥ apica: even wind-god | hanumajjanakaḥ: father of Hanuma | pucchānala yutaḥ: combined with the fire on his tail | vavau: swept | prāleyānila śītalaḥ: coolly like a snow-breeze | svāsthyakaraḥ: creating a soloce | devyāḥ: to Seetha. |

TRANSLATION

Even wind-god, the father of Hanuma, combined with the fire on Hanuma's tail, swept coolly like a snow-breeze, creating a solace to Seetha.

VERSE 34

दह्यमाने च लान्गूले चिन्तयामास वानरः

dahyamāne ca lāngūle cintayāmāsa vānaraḥ

SYNONYMS

laṅgūle: (While) his tail | dahyamāne: was burning | vānaraḥ: Hanuma | cintayāmāsa: was reflecting | kasmāt: why | ayam agniḥ: this fire | pradīptaḥ: which was burning | sāvataḥ: on all sides | na dahati: was not burning | mām: him. |

TRANSLATION

While his tail was in flames, Hanuma was reflecting why the fire, which was blazing on all sides, was not burning him.

VERSE 35

दृश्यते च महाज्वालः करोति च न मे रुजम्

dṛśyate ca mahājvālaḥ karoti ca na me rujam

SYNONYMS

dṛśyate: It is conspicuous | mahājvālaḥ: with large flames | na karoti ca: not creating | rujam: paoin | me: to me | iva: as though | śiśirasya samghātaḥ: a snow-ball | pratiṣṭhitaḥ: is kept | lāṇgūlāgre: at the tip of my tail. |

TRANSLATION

"It is conspicuous with large flames. But it is not creating any paoin to me, as if a snow-ball is kept at the tip of my tail."

VERSE 36

अथवा तत् इदम् व्यक्तम् यत् दृष्टम् प्लवता मया

athavā tat idam vyaktam yat dṛṣṭam plavatā mayā

SYNONYMS

athava: Or | plavatā: while jumping over | mayā: by me | rāma prabhāvāt: due to the power of Rama | āścaryam: a surprise | dṛṣṭam: was seen | parvatodadhi samgame: in a friendly alliance with a mountain and the sea | yat tat: by which | idam: this | vyaktam: is clear. |

TRANSLATION

"Or, while I was jumping over the ocean, a surprise-alliance was formed with Mount Mainaka and through the mountain, with the ocean, because of Rama's power. By this, the reason of the coolness is clear."

VERSE 37

यदि तावत् समुद्रस्य मैनाकस्य च धीमथ

yadi tāvat samudrasya mainākasya ca dhīmatha

SYNONYMS

yadi: If | samudrasya: for the ocean | dhīmataḥ mynakasya: and the wise Mount Mainaka | tādṛk sambhramaḥ: such an eagerness was tehre | rāmārtham: for the sake of Rama | kim: why | agniḥ: the fire-god | nakariṣyati: will not do it? |

TRANSLATION

"If such an eagerness was there in the mind of the sea and the wise Mount Mainaka for the cause of Rama; will not the fire-god show the same degree of eagerness in making its touch cold?"

VERSE 38

सीतायाः च आनृशंस्येन तेजसा राघवस्य च

sītāyāḥ ca ānṛśaṃsyena tejasā rāghavasya ca

SYNONYMS

pāvakaḥ: the fire | na dahati: does not burn | mām: me | ānṛśamsyena: due to kindness | sītāyāḥ: of Seetha | tejasā: power | rāghavasya: of Rama | sakhyena: and friendship | mama pituḥ: of my father. |

TRANSLATION

"The fire does not burn me, due to kindness of Seetha, powerfulness of Rama and friendlines of my father."

VERSE 39

भूयः स चिन्तयामास मुहूर्तम् कपि कुन्जरः

bhūyaḥ sa cintayāmāsa muhūrtam kapi kunjaraḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ mahākapiḥ: that Hanuma | kapikuṅjaraḥ: the foremost among mokeys | cintayāmāsa: reflected | bhūyaḥ: again | atha: and thereafter | utpapāta: jumped | vegena: with swiftness | nanāda ca: and roared also. |

TRANSLATION

That Hanuma, the foremost among the monkeys, reflected agian for a monment, jumped with swiftness and roared too.

VERSE 40

पुर द्वारम् ततः श्रीमान् शैल शृन्गम् इव उन्नतम्

pura dvāram tataḥ śrīmān śaila śṛngam iva unnatam

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | śrīmān: the glorious | anilātmajaḥ: Hanuma | śaila śṛṅgamiva: like a mountain-peak | āsasāda: approached | puradvāram: the city-gate | unnatam: which was looking high | vibhaktarakṣaḥ sambādham: and stood secluded from the crowds of demons. |

TRANSLATION

Then, the glorious Hanuma like a mountain-peak, approached the city-gate, which was looking high and stood secluded from the crowds of demons.

VERSE 41

स भूत्वा शैल सम्काशः क्षणेन पुनः आत्मवान्

sa bhūtvā śaila samkāśaḥ kṣaṇena punaḥ ātmavān

SYNONYMS

saḥ ātmavān: that prudent Hanuma | bhūtvā: became | śaila samkāśaḥ: similar to a mountain | kṣaṇena: and within a moment | prāptaḥ: reached | paramām hrasvatām: an exceedingly short form | avaśātayat: and became free | bandhanāni: from tethers. |

TRANSLATION

That prudent Hanuma assumed the form of a mountain and immediately within a moment, assumed an exceedingly short form, thus becoming free from his tethers.

VERSE 42

विमुक्तः च अभवत् श्रीमान् पुनः पर्वत सम्निभः

vimuktaḥ ca abhavat śrīmān punaḥ parvata samnibhaḥ

SYNONYMS

śrīmān: the glorious Hanuma | vimuktaśca: having been free from his tethers | punaḥ: again | abhavat: assumed | parvatasannibhaḥ: a form equal to a mountain | vīkṣamāṇaśca: and while looking around | dadṛśe: saw | parigham: an iron rod | toraṇāśritam: belonging to the arched door-way. |

TRANSLATION

The glorious Hanuma, having been free from his bonds, again assumed the form equal to a mountain and while looking around, found and iron rod belonging to the arched door-way.

VERSE 43

स तम् गृह्य महाबाहुः काल आयस परिष्कृतम्

sa tam gṛhya mahābāhuḥ kāla āyasa pariṣkṛtam

SYNONYMS

saḥ mahābāhuḥ: that long-armed | mārutiḥ: Hanuma | punaḥ: again | gṛhya: taking | tam: that rod | kālāasapariṣkṛtam: made of iron | sūdayāmāsa: killed | sarvān: all | tān rakṣiṇaḥ: tose guards. |

TRANSLATION

That long-armed Hanuma, again taking taht rod made of iron, killed all those guards.

VERSE 44

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे त्रिपञ्चशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye sundarakāṇḍe tripañcaśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that Hanuma | raṇa caṅḍa vikramaḥ: possessing impetuous valour in combat | nihattvā: destroying | tān: them | punareva: and again | samīkṣamāṇaḥ: looking over | laṅkām: Lanka | prakāśata: shone | āditya iva: like the sun | arcimālī: encircled with rays | pradīpta lāṇgūlakṛtārci mālī: with the wreath of flames |

TRANSLATION

That Hanuma, having an impetuous valour in combat, destroying those demons and looking over Lanka, shone like the sun encircled with rays, with the wreath of flames blazing on his tail.
