VERSE 1

संदिष्टो राक्षस इन्द्रेण प्रहस्तस्य सुतो बली
जम्बु माली महादम्ष्ट्रो निर्जगाम धनुः धरः

saṃdiṣṭo rākṣasa indreṇa prahastasya suto balī
jambu mālī mahādamṣṭro nirjagāma dhanuḥ dharaḥ

TRANSLATION

Jambumali, the demon with great tusks, wielding a bow, donning crimson garlands and clothes, wearing beautiful chaplet and charming ear-rings, possessing a gigantic body, having round and open eyes, the demon causing diseases, unconquerable in battle, a strong demon and the son of Prahasta, commanded by Ravana, started stretching with rashness his big bow resembling a rain bow garnished splendorous arrows and which brilliance was similar to that of a lightening and produced a sound like that of a thunder.

VERSE 4

तस्य विस्फार घोषेण धनुषो महता दिशः
प्रदिशः च नभः चैव सहसा समपूर्यत

tasya visphāra ghoṣeṇa dhanuṣo mahatā diśaḥ
pradiśaḥ ca nabhaḥ caiva sahasā samapūryata

SYNONYMS

mahatā visphāra ghoṣeṇa: the tumultuous sound out of the twanging | tasya dhanuṣaḥ: of that bow | sahasā: soon | samapūryata: filled up | diśaḥ: the quarters | pradiśaścaiva: the intermediate points | nabhaścaiva: and even the sky. |

TRANSLATION

The tumultuous sound created out of the twanging of that bow, soon filled up the quarters, intermediate points and the sky.

VERSE 5

रथेन खर युक्तेन तम् आगतम् उदीक्ष्य सः
हनूमान् वेग सम्पन्नो जहर्ष च ननाद च

rathena khara yuktena tam āgatam udīkṣya saḥ
hanūmān vega sampanno jaharṣa ca nanāda ca

SYNONYMS

udīkṣye: seeing | tam: him | āgatam: who arrived | rathena: by a chariot | kharayuktena: yoked with donkeys | saḥ hanumān: that Hanuma | vega sampannaḥ: endowed with swiftness | jaharṣa ca: was thrilled with joy | nanādaca: and made a noise too. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing him, arriving by a chariot yoked with donkeys, that Hanuma who was endowed with swiftness, was thrilled with joy and made a noise too.

VERSE 6

तम् तोरण विटन्कस्थम् हनूमन्तम् महाकपिम्
जम्बु माली महाबाहुः विव्याध निशितैः शरैः

tam toraṇa viṭankastham hanūmantam mahākapim
jambu mālī mahābāhuḥ vivyādha niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ

SYNONYMS

mahābāhuḥ: the long-armed | jambumālī: Jambumali | vivyādha: transfixed | niśitaiḥ: sharp | śaraiḥ: arrows | tam hanumantam: into that Hanuma | mahākapim: the great monkey | toraṇa viṭaṅkastham: who was standing on the top of the archy door-way. |

TRANSLATION

The long-armed Jambumali transfixed sharp arrows into that great monkey, Hanuma who was standing on the top of the archy door-way.

VERSE 7

अर्ध चन्द्रेण वदने शिरसि एकेन कर्णिना
बाह्वोः विव्याध नाराचैः दशभिः तम् कपि ईश्वरम्

ardha candreṇa vadane śirasi ekena karṇinā
bāhvoḥ vivyādha nārācaiḥ daśabhiḥ tam kapi īśvaram

SYNONYMS

vivyādha: (He) transfixed | tam kapīśvaram: that Hanuma | vadane: in the face | ardha candreṇa: with an arrow with a crescent-shaped head | śirasi: on the head | ekena karṇinā: with an arrow with an ear-shaped top | bāhvoḥ: and in the arms | daśabhiḥ: with ten | vārācaiḥ: arrows made fully of steel. |

TRANSLATION

He transfixed Hanuma the leader of monkeys in the face with an arrow with a crescent-shaped head, on the head with an arrow having an ear-shaped top and in the arms with ten steel arrows.

VERSE 8

तस्य तत् शुशुभे ताम्रम् शरेण अभिहतम् मुखम्
शरदि इव अम्बुजम् फुल्लम् विद्धम् भास्कर रश्मिना

tasya tat śuśubhe tāmram śareṇa abhihatam mukham
śaradi iva ambujam phullam viddham bhāskara raśminā

SYNONYMS

tat: that | tāmram: crimson | mukham: face | abhihatam: hit | śareṇa: by an arrow | śuśubhe: shone | phullam ambujamiva: like a full-blown lotus | viddham: penetrated | bhāskara raśminā: by the ray of the sun | śaradi: in autumn. |

TRANSLATION

That crimson face of Hanuma, hit by an arrow, shone like a full-blown lotus touched by a sun's ray in autumn.

VERSE 9

तत्तस्य रक्तम् रक्तेन रञ्जितम् शुशुभे मुखम्
यथाकाशे महापद्मं सिक्तं चन्दनबिन्दुभिः

tattasya raktam raktena rañjitam śuśubhe mukham
yathākāśe mahāpadmaṃ siktaṃ candanabindubhiḥ

SYNONYMS

tat: that | mukham: face | tasya: of Hanuma | raktam: which was naturally crimson in colour | raṅjitam: smeared | raktena: with blood | śuśubhe: beamed | mahāpadmamyathā: like a large louts | ākāśe: in the sky | siktam: sprinkled | candana bindubhiḥ: with drops of sandal. |

TRANSLATION

That face of Hanuma, which was naturally crimson in colour, smeared with blood, beamed like a large lotus in the sky sprinkled with drops of sandal.

VERSE 10

चुकोप बाण अभिहतो राक्षसस्य महाकपिः
ततः पार्श्वे अतिविपुलाम् ददर्श महतीम् शिलाम्

cukopa bāṇa abhihato rākṣasasya mahākapiḥ
tataḥ pārśve ativipulām dadarśa mahatīm śilām

SYNONYMS

mahākapiḥ: Hanuma | bāṇābhihataḥ: struck by the arrows | cukopa: was enraged | rākṣasasya: of the demon | tataḥ: and then | dadarśa: saw | pārśve: by his side | ativipulām śilām: a big rock | mahatīm: of a very large measure. |

TRANSLATION

Hanuma, struck by those arrows, was enraged with that demon and then saw by his side, a big rock of a very large measure.

VERSE 11

तरसा ताम् समुत्पाट्य चिक्षेप बलवत् बली
ताम् शरैः दशभिः क्रुद्धः ताडयामास राक्षसः

tarasā tām samutpāṭya cikṣepa balavat balī
tām śaraiḥ daśabhiḥ kruddhaḥ tāḍayāmāsa rākṣasaḥ

SYNONYMS

samutpāṭya: uplifting | tām: that rock | tarasā: with strength | balī: the strong Hanuma | cikṣepa: hurled (it) | balavat: with force | kruddhaḥ: the enraged | rākṣasaḥ: demon | tāḍayāmāsa: struck | daśabhiḥ: with ten | śaraiḥ: arrows. |

TRANSLATION

Uplifting that rock with strength, the athletic Hanuma hurled it with force. The enraged demon then struck back that rock with ten arrows.

VERSE 12

विपन्नम् कर्म तत् दृष्ट्वा हनूमान् चण्ड विक्रमः
सालम् विपुलम् उत्पाट्य भ्रामयामास वीर्यवान्

vipannam karma tat dṛṣṭvā hanūmān caṇḍa vikramaḥ
sālam vipulam utpāṭya bhrāmayāmāsa vīryavān

SYNONYMS

vīryavān: the powerful | hanumān: Hanuma | caṅḍa vikramah: having terrific prowess | dṛṣṭvā: in vain | utpāṭya: and having uprooted | vipulam: a very large | sālam: sal tree | bhrāmayāmāsa: whirled it around. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing that work in vain, the powerful Hanuma of terrific prowess, uprooted a very large sal tree and whirled it around.

VERSE 13

भ्रामयन्तम् कपिम् दृष्ट्वा साल वृक्षम् महाबलम्
चिक्षेप सुबहून् बाणान् जम्बु माली महाबलः

bhrāmayantam kapim dṛṣṭvā sāla vṛkṣam mahābalam
cikṣepa subahūn bāṇān jambu mālī mahābalaḥ

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | mahābalam kapim: the mighty Hanuma | bhrāmayantam: whirling around | sāla vṛkṣam: the sal tree | mahābalaḥ: the exceedingly strong | jambumālī: Jambumali | cikṣepa: discharged | subahūn: numerous baaNaan = arrows. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing the mighty Hanuma, whirling around the sal tree, the exceedingly strong Jambumali discharged numerous arrows.

VERSE 14

सालम् चतुर्भिः चिच्छेद वानरम् पन्चभिः भुजे
उरसि एकेन बाणेन दशभिः तु स्तन अन्तरे

sālam caturbhiḥ ciccheda vānaram pancabhiḥ bhuje
urasi ekena bāṇena daśabhiḥ tu stana antare

SYNONYMS

cicheda: (He) splitted | sālam: sal tree | caturbhiḥ: with four arrows | vānaram bhuje: the arms of Hanuma | paṅcabhiḥ: with five arrows | urasi: in the chest | ekena bāṇena: with one arrow | stanāntare: in the space between the breasts | daśabhiḥ: with ten arrows. |

TRANSLATION

He splitted sal tree with four arrows and struck the arms of Hanuma with five arrows, in the chest with one arrow and in the space between the breast wit ten arrows.

VERSE 15

स शरैः पूरित तनुः क्रोधेन महता वृतः
तम् एव परिघम् गृह्य भ्रामयामास वेगितः

sa śaraiḥ pūrita tanuḥ krodhena mahatā vṛtaḥ
tam eva parigham gṛhya bhrāmayāmāsa vegitaḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ: Hanuma | śaraiḥ pūrita tanuḥ: with his body full of arrows | mahatā krodhena: was highly enraged | gṛhya: and taking | tam parighameva: the same iron rod | vṛtaḥ vegitaḥ: and clasping it swiftly | bhrāmayāmāsa: whirled it around. |

TRANSLATION

Hanuma, with his body full of arrows, was highly enraged and taking the same iron rod as well as clasping it swiftly, whirled it around.

VERSE 16

अतिवेगो अतिवेगेन भ्रामयित्वा बल उत्कटः
परिघम् पातयामास जम्बु मालेः महाउरसि

ativego ativegena bhrāmayitvā bala utkaṭaḥ
parigham pātayāmāsa jambu māleḥ mahāurasi

SYNONYMS

bhrāmayitvā: spinning | parigham: the iron rod | ativegena: with a great speed | balatkaṭaḥ: Hanuma | ativegaḥ: and highly agitated | pātayāmāsa: threw (it) | mahorasi: on the broad chest | jambumālaḥ: of Jamubumali. |

TRANSLATION

Spinning the iron rod with a great speed, Hanuma, richly endowed with strength and highly agitated, threw it on the broad chest of Jamubumali.

VERSE 17

तस्य चैव शिरो न अस्ति न बाहू न च जानुनी
न धनुः न रथो न अश्वाः तत्र अदृश्यन्त न इषवः

tasya caiva śiro na asti na bāhū na ca jānunī
na dhanuḥ na ratho na aśvāḥ tatra adṛśyanta na iṣavaḥ

SYNONYMS

tasya: that Jambumali's | śiraḥ caiva: head | nāsti: was not | tatra: there | na: nor iSavaH = his arrows. | jānunī: his knees | dhanuḥ: his bow | rathaḥ: his chariot | nā dṛśyanta: ashvaaH = nor his horses were seen |

TRANSLATION

That Jambumali's head was not there, nor his arms, nor his knees, nor his bow, nor his chariot and nor his horses were seen nor his arrows.

VERSE 18

स हतः तरसा तेन जम्बु माली महारथः
पपात निहतो भूमौ चूर्णित अन्ग विभूषणः

sa hataḥ tarasā tena jambu mālī mahārathaḥ
papāta nihato bhūmau cūrṇita anga vibhūṣaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

hataḥ: (Thus) struck | tena: by Hanuma | mahābalaḥ: the mighty | jambumālī: Jambumali | cūrṇitān^ga vibhūṣaṇaḥ: with his limbs and ornaments crushed to powder | sahasā: was instantly | nihataḥ: killed | papāta: and fell | bhūmau: on the ground. |

TRANSLATION

Thus struck by Hanuma, the mighty Jambumali, with his limbs and ornaments crushed to powder, was instantly killed and fell dead on the ground.

VERSE 19

जम्बु मालिम् च निहतम् किम्करान् च महाबलान्
चुक्रोध रावणः श्रुत्वा कोप सम्रक्त लोचनः

jambu mālim ca nihatam kimkarān ca mahābalān
cukrodha rāvaṇaḥ śrutvā kopa samrakta locanaḥ

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | jambumālimca: Jambumali | nihatam: having been killed | mahābalān kimkarānśca: as also the might kimbaras | rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | cukrodha: was angry | kopa samrakta locanah: with his red enraged eyes. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing Jambumali having been killed, as also the mighty Kimkaras, Ravana was angry with his red enraged eyes.

VERSE 20

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे चतुश्चत्वारिंशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye sundarakāṇḍe catuścatvāriṃśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

mahābale: (Since) the mighty | prahastaputre: son of Prahasta | nihate: was killed | saḥ niśācareśvaraḥ: that Ravana | roṣasamvartita tāmra locanaḥ: rolling his red eyes with rage | āśu: immediately | samādideśa: ordered | amātya putrān: the sons of ministers | ativīrya vikramān: having too much of strength and prowess |

TRANSLATION

Since the mighty son of Prahasta was killed, that Ravana rolling his red eyes with rage, immediately ordered the sons of ministers possessing high strength and prowess, to go to the battle.
