VERSE 1

तम् समीक्ष्य महासत्त्वम् सत्त्ववान् हारि सत्तमः
वाक्यम् अर्थवत् अव्यग्रः तम् उवाच दश आननम्

tam samīkṣya mahāsattvam sattvavān hāri sattamaḥ
vākyam arthavat avyagraḥ tam uvāca daśa ānanam

SYNONYMS

samīkṣya: seeing | tam: to him | mahāsattvam: highly energetic | daśānanam: Ravana | sattvavān: the courageous | harisattamaḥ: Hanuma | uvāca: spoke | arthavat: (the following) meaningful | vākyam: words | avyagram: coolly. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing that highly energetic Ravana, the courageous Hanuma coolly spoke to him the following meaningful words:

VERSE 2

अहम् सुग्रीव संदेशात् इह प्राप्तः तव आलयम्
राक्षस इन्द्र हरि ईशः त्वाम् भ्राता कुशलम् अब्रवीत्

aham sugrīva saṃdeśāt iha prāptaḥ tava ālayam
rākṣasa indra hari īśaḥ tvām bhrātā kuśalam abravīt

SYNONYMS

rākṣasendra: O king of demons! | sugrīva samdeśāt: by the command of Sugreeva | aham: I | prāptaḥ: came | iha: here | tava ālayam: to your abode | harīśaḥ: Sugreeva | bhrātā: your brother | abravīt: enquired | tvām kuśalam: about your welfare. |

TRANSLATION

"O king of demons! By the command of Sugreeva, I came here to your abode. Sugreeva, the Lord of monkeys, your brother, asked me to enquire about your welfare.

VERSE 3

भ्रातुः शृणु समादेशम् सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः
धर्म अर्थ उपहितम् वाक्यम् इह च अमुत्र च क्षमम्

bhrātuḥ śṛṇu samādeśam sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ
dharma artha upahitam vākyam iha ca amutra ca kṣamam

SYNONYMS

śruṇa: here | vākyam: the words | samādeśam: as an advice | mahātmanaḥ sugrīvasya: of the high-souled Sugreeva | bhrātuḥ: your brother | kṣamam: conducive to good | ihaca: in this world | amutraca: and in the other world | dharmārthopahitam: as also endowed with righteousness and meaningfulness. |

TRANSLATION

"Hear the righteous and meaningful words, as a following advice, of the high-souled Sugreeva, your brother, conducive to good in the world as well as in the other world."

VERSE 4

राजा दशरथो नाम रथ कुन्जर वाजिमान्
पिता इव बन्धुः लोकस्य सुर ईश्वर सम द्युतिः

rājā daśaratho nāma ratha kunjara vājimān
pitā iva bandhuḥ lokasya sura īśvara sama dyutiḥ

SYNONYMS

rājā: (there was) a king | daśarathonāma: named Dasaratha | ratha kuṅjara vājimān: having chariots | piteva: like a father | lokasya: to the people | sureśvara samadyutiḥ: and possessing a splendour equal to that of Indra the Lord of celestials. |

TRANSLATION

"There was a king named Dasaratha, having chariots, elephants and horses, like a father to the people and endowed with a splendour equal to that of Indra the lord of celestials."

VERSE 5

ज्येष्ठः तस्य महाबाहुः पुत्रः प्रिय करः प्रभुः
पितुः निदेशान् निष्क्रान्तः प्रविष्टो दण्डका वनम्

jyeṣṭhaḥ tasya mahābāhuḥ putraḥ priya karaḥ prabhuḥ
pituḥ nideśān niṣkrāntaḥ praviṣṭo daṇḍakā vanam

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

"His eldest son named Rama, having mighty arms, a bestower of affection and our lord, by the command of his father, abiding in a righteous path, went out on exile and entered a forest called Dandaka along with Lakshmana his brother and Seetha his wife."

VERSE 7

तस्य भार्या वने नष्टा सीता पतिम् अनुव्रता
वैदेहस्य सुता राज्ञो जनकस्य महात्मनः

tasya bhāryā vane naṣṭā sītā patim anuvratā
vaidehasya sutā rājño janakasya mahātmanaḥ

SYNONYMS

sītā: Seetha | tasya bhāryā: Rama's wife | patim anuvratā: devoted to her husaband | sutā: and daughter | mahātmanaḥ: of the high-souled | rājñaḥ: king | janakasya: called Janaka | vaidehasya: the head of Videha kingdom | naṣṭā: got lost | vane: in the forest. |

TRANSLATION

"Seetha, wife of Rama, devoted to her husband and daughter of the high-souled king, named Janaka, the head of Videha kingdom, got lost in the forest."

VERSE 8

स मार्गमाणः ताम् देवीम् राज पुत्रः सह अनुजः
ऋश्यमूकम् अनुप्राप्तः सुग्रीवेण च सम्गतः

sa mārgamāṇaḥ tām devīm rāja putraḥ saha anujaḥ
ṛśyamūkam anuprāptaḥ sugrīveṇa ca samgataḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ rājaputraḥ: Rama | sahānujaḥ: along with his brother | mārga māṇaḥ: searching | tām devīm: that lady | anuprāptaḥ: reached | ṛṣyamūkam: Mount Rishyamuka | samāgataḥ: and met | sugrīvaṇa: Sugreeva. |

TRANSLATION

"That prince, Rama together with his brother, searching that lady, reached Mount Rishyamuka and happened to meet Sugreeva."

VERSE 9

तस्य तेन प्रतिज्ञातम् सीतायाः परिमार्गणम्
सुग्रीवस्य अपि रामेण हरि राज्यम् निवेदितम्

tasya tena pratijñātam sītāyāḥ parimārgaṇam
sugrīvasya api rāmeṇa hari rājyam niveditam

SYNONYMS

tena: by that Sugreeva | sītāyāḥ parimārgaṇam: looking for Seetha | pratijñātam: was promised | tasya: to that Rama | rāmeṇa api: even by Rama | harirājyam: the kingdom of monkeys | niveditam: was announced (promised) | sugrīvasya: to Sugreeva. |

TRANSLATION

"While Sugreeva promised Rama to get Seetha searched, Rama too promised to get the kingdom of monkeys to Sugreeva."

VERSE 10

ततः तेन मृधे हत्वा राज पुत्रेण वालिनम्
सुग्रीवः स्थापितो राज्ये हरि ऋक्षाणाम् गण ईश्वरः

tataḥ tena mṛdhe hatvā rāja putreṇa vālinam
sugrīvaḥ sthāpito rājye hari ṛkṣāṇām gaṇa īśvaraḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | vālinam: Vali | hatvā: having been killed | mṛdhe: in combat | tena rājaputreṇa: by Rama | sugrīva: Sugreeva | sthāpitaḥ: was installed | rājye: in the kingdom | haryṛkṣaṇām: of monkeys and bears | gaṇeśvaraḥ: as a Lord of that troop. |

TRANSLATION

"Thereafter, killing Vali in a combat, Rama installed Sugreeva on the throne as a lord of that troop monkeys and bears."

VERSE 11

त्वया विज्ञातपूर्वश्च वाली वानरपुङ्गवः
रामेण निहतः संख्ये शरेणैकेन वानरः

tvayā vijñātapūrvaśca vālī vānarapuṅgavaḥ
rāmeṇa nihataḥ saṃkhye śareṇaikena vānaraḥ

SYNONYMS

vāli: Vali | vānarapuṇgavaḥ: the foremost among monkeys | tvayā vijñāta pūrvaśca: was known to you previously | vānaraḥ: that Vali | nihataḥ: was killed | rāmeṇa: by Rama | ekena śareṇa: with a single arrow | samkhye: in battle. |

TRANSLATION

"You may indeed know Vali, the foremost among monkeys, previously. Rama killed that Vali with a single arrow in battle."

VERSE 12

स सीता मार्गणे व्यग्रः सुग्रीवः सत्य सम्गरः
हरीन् सम्प्रेषयामास दिशः सर्वा हरि ईश्वरः

sa sītā mārgaṇe vyagraḥ sugrīvaḥ satya samgaraḥ
harīn sampreṣayāmāsa diśaḥ sarvā hari īśvaraḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ harīśvaraḥ: that lord of monkeys | sugrīvaḥ: Sugreeva | satya sangaraḥ: true to his promise | vyagraḥ: was intent on | sītāmārgaṇe: searching for Seetha | sampreṣayāmāsa: and sent | harīn: his monkeys | sarvāaḥ: to all dishaH = directions. |

TRANSLATION

"Sugreeva, the lord of monkeys, true to his promise, was intent on searching for Seetha and sent his monkeys to all directions."

VERSE 13

ताम् हरीणाम् सहस्राणि शतानि नियुतानि च
दिक्षु सर्वासु मार्गन्ते अधः च उपरि च अम्बरे

tām harīṇām sahasrāṇi śatāni niyutāni ca
dikṣu sarvāsu mārgante adhaḥ ca upari ca ambare

SYNONYMS

sahasrāṇi: thousands | śatāni: hundreds | niyutāni: and lakhs | harīṇām: of monkeys | mārgante: are searching | tām: for her | sarvāsu dikṣu: in all directions | adhaśca: as also below | upari: and above | ambare ca: in the sky. |

TRANSLATION

"Hundreds, thousands and lakhs of monkeys are searching for her in all quarters, as also below and above in the sky."

VERSE 14

वैनतेय समाः केचित् केचित् तत्र अनिल उपमाः
असम्ग गतयः शीघ्रा हरि वीरा महाबलाः

vainateya samāḥ kecit kecit tatra anila upamāḥ
asamga gatayaḥ śīghrā hari vīrā mahābalāḥ

SYNONYMS

tatra: in those monkeys | kecit: some | mahābalāḥ: mighty | harivīrāḥ: virile monkeys | vainateya samāḥ: are like Garuda the eagle. kechit = some | anilopamāḥ: are like wind | śīghrāḥ: swiftly going | asmgagatayaḥ: with an unhindered movement. |

TRANSLATION

"Among those monkeys, some mighty and virile monkeys are similar to Garuda the eagle. Some are like wind, swiftly going with an unhindered movement."

VERSE 15

अहम् तु हनुमान् नाम मारुतस्य औरसः सुतः
सीतायाः तु कृते तूर्णम् शत योजनम् आयतम्

aham tu hanumān nāma mārutasya aurasaḥ sutaḥ
sītāyāḥ tu kṛte tūrṇam śata yojanam āyatam

SYNONYMS

aham tu: I am | ourasaḥ sutaḥ: an own son | mārutasya: of wind-god | hanumānnāma: and named as Hanuma | āgataḥ: who came | iha: here | laṅghayitvaiva: even by crossing | tūrṇam: quickly | samudram: the sea | śatayojanam āyatam: which is a hundred yojanas (or eight hundred miles) wide | sītāyāḥ kṛte: for the sake of Seetha | didṛkṣuḥ: and wishing to see | tām: her. |

TRANSLATION

"I am, however, an own son of wind-god and named as Hanuma. I came here even by crossing quickly the ocean, which is a hundred yojanas (or eight hundred miles) wide for the sake of Seetha and wishing to see her."

VERSE 16

भ्रमता च मया दृष्टा गृहे ते जनकात्मजा

bhramatā ca mayā dṛṣṭā gṛhe te janakātmajā

SYNONYMS

17| mayā: by me | bhramatā: who was strolling around | janakāmajā: Seetha | dṛṣṭā: was seen | te gṛhe: in your abode | bhavān: you | dṛṣṭadharmārthaḥ: learnt about religious merit and wealth | tapaḥ kṛtaparigrahaḥ: and performed and mastered the austerities | mahāprājña: O great intellectual! | tat: that is why | tvam na arhasi: you ought not | uparoddhum: besiege | paradārān: the wife of another. |

TRANSLATION

"While strolling around in the city of Lanka, I found Seetha in your abode. You know about religious merit and wealth. You performed and mastered the austerities. That is why, you ought not besiege the wife of another, O great intellectual!"

VERSE 18

न हि धर्म विरुद्धेषु बह्व् अपायेषु कर्मसु
मूल घातिषु सज्जन्ते बुद्धिमन्तो भवत् विधाः

na hi dharma viruddheṣu bahv apāyeṣu karmasu
mūla ghātiṣu sajjante buddhimanto bhavat vidhāḥ

SYNONYMS

buddhimantaḥ: Intellectuals | bhavadvidhāḥ: like you | na sujjante hi: indeed are not engrossed | karmasu: in actions | dharmaviruddheṣu: which are antagonistic to righteousness | bahvapāyeṣu: which are attended with many dangers | mūlaghātiṣu: and which ruin doer at the roots. |

TRANSLATION

"Intellectuals like you indeed are not engrossed in acts, which are antagonistic to righteousness, which are attended with many dangers and which even ruin the doer at the roots."

VERSE 19

कः च लक्ष्मण मुक्तानाम् राम कोप अनुवर्तिनाम्
शराणाम् अग्रतः स्थातुम् शक्तो देव असुरेष्व् अपि

kaḥ ca lakṣmaṇa muktānām rāma kopa anuvartinām
śarāṇām agrataḥ sthātum śakto deva asureṣv api

SYNONYMS

kaḥ: who | śaktaḥ: is capable | devāasureṣvapi: even among celestials and demons | sthātum: to stand firmly | agrataḥ: in front | śarāṇām: of arrows | lakṣmaṇamuktānām: discharged by LakSmaNamuktaanaam = discharged by Lakshmana | rāma kopānuvartinām: in the wake of the fury of Rama? |

TRANSLATION

"Who is capable even among celestials and demons, to withstand the arrows discharged by Lakshmana, in the wake of the fury of Rama?

VERSE 20

न च अपि त्रिषु लोकेषु राजन् विद्येत कश्चन
राघवस्य व्यलीकम् यः कृत्वा सुखम् अवाप्नुयात्

na ca api triṣu lokeṣu rājan vidyeta kaścana
rāghavasya vyalīkam yaḥ kṛtvā sukham avāpnuyāt

SYNONYMS

rājan: O king! | na vidyeta kaścana: none is known | triṣu lokeṣu: in the three worlds | yaḥ: who avaapnuyaat = have gained | sukham: happiness | kṛtā: by doing | vyaḻīkam: harm | rāghavaya: to Rama. |

TRANSLATION

"O king! No one is known in the three worlds, who have gained happiness, by doing harm to Rama."

VERSE 21

तत् त्रिकाल हितम् वाक्यम् धर्म्यम् अर्थ अनुबन्धि च
मन्यस्व नर देवाय जानकी प्रतिदीयताम्

tat trikāla hitam vākyam dharmyam artha anubandhi ca
manyasva nara devāya jānakī pratidīyatām

SYNONYMS

tat: that is why | manyasva: agree with | vākyam: my words | trikālahitam: which are beneficial for all the three times | dharmyam: legitimate | arthānubandhica: and resulting in affluence and respectability janakii = 9let) Seetha | pratidīyatām: be restored | naradevāya: to Rama. |

TRANSLATION

"That is why, accede to my words, which are beneficial for all the three divisions of time (viz. the past, present and future), resulting in affluence and respectability as well. Let Seetha be restored to Rama."

VERSE 22

दृष्टा हि इयम् मया देवी लब्धम् यत् इह दुर्लभम्
उत्तरम् कर्म यत् शेषम् निमित्तम् तत्र राघवः

dṛṣṭā hi iyam mayā devī labdham yat iha durlabham
uttaram karma yat śeṣam nimittam tatra rāghavaḥ

SYNONYMS

māa: by me | iyam devī: this princess | dṛṣṭā hi: has been indeed beheld | yat: which | durlabham: is difficult to be achieved | labdham: and which is achieved | iha: here | yat karma: whichever work | śeṣam: remaining | uttaram: of future consequence | nimittam: is for | rāghavaḥ: Rama | tatra: there (to decide) |

TRANSLATION

"I beheld Seetha, the princess. The audience of Seetha is difficult to be achieved and it is obtained here. It is for Rama there to decide his remaining task of future consequence."

VERSE 23

लक्षिता इयम् मया सीता तथा शोक परायणा
गृह्य याम् न अभिजानासि पन्च आस्याम् इव पन्नगीम्

lakṣitā iyam mayā sītā tathā śoka parāyaṇā
gṛhya yām na abhijānāsi panca āsyām iva pannagīm

SYNONYMS

gṛhya: capturing | yām: which Seetha | paṅcāsyām pannagīmiva: akin to a five-hooded female-serpent | nābhijānāsi: you are not able to recognize | iyam sītā: this Seetha | śokaparāyaṇā: wholly given up to sorrow | lakṣitā: was seen | mayā: by me | tathā: in that manner. |

TRANSLATION

"Capturing Seetha, whom you do not recognize as a five-hooded female serpent in your abode, has been found by me in that manner, and wholly given over to sorrow."

VERSE 24

न इयम् जरयितुम् शक्या सासुरैः अमरैः अपि
विष संसृष्टम् अत्यर्थम् भुक्तम् अन्नम् इव ओजसा

na iyam jarayitum śakyā sāsuraiḥ amaraiḥ api
viṣa saṃsṛṣṭam atyartham bhuktam annam iva ojasā

SYNONYMS

iyam: she | na śakyā: is incapable | jarayitum: of being devoured | ojasā: with one's might | amarairapi: even by celestials | sāsuraiḥ: together with demons | annamiva: like food | atyartham viṣasamsṛṣṭam: mixed with abundant poison | bhuktam: is in capable of being consumed. |

TRANSLATION

"She is incapable of being devoured with one's might even by celestials and demons, any more than food mixed with abundant poison could be digested with one's digestive power, if consumed."

VERSE 25

तपः सम्ताप लब्धः ते यो अयम् धर्म परिग्रहः
न स नाशयितुम् न्याय्य आत्म प्राण परिग्रहः

tapaḥ samtāpa labdhaḥ te yo ayam dharma parigrahaḥ
na sa nāśayitum nyāyya ātma prāṇa parigrahaḥ

SYNONYMS

na nyāyyaḥ: it is not proper | nāśayitum: to lose | saḥ: that | ātma prāṇa parigrahaḥ: capacity to preserve your life (for exceptional longevity) | yaḥ: or which | ayam dharmaparigrahaḥ: is an outcome of your virtue | tapaḥ samāpa labdhaḥ: both of which have been acquired by you through the practice of austerities. |

TRANSLATION

"It is not proper for you to lose your exceptional longevity and that fortune which is an outcome of your virtue, both of which have been acquired by you through the practice of austerities."

VERSE 26

अवध्यताम् तपोभिः याम् भवान् समनुपश्यति
आत्मनः सासुरैः देवैः हेतुः तत्र अपि अयम् महान्

avadhyatām tapobhiḥ yām bhavān samanupaśyati
ātmanaḥ sāsuraiḥ devaiḥ hetuḥ tatra api ayam mahān

SYNONYMS

bhavān samanupaśyasi: you may perceive | ātmanaḥ avadhyatām: your own immunity from death | sāsuraiḥ: from demons | devaiḥ: and celestials | tapobhiḥ: by your austerities | tatrāpi: in that matter also | ayam: this | mahān: great | hetuḥ: reason (exists). |

TRANSLATION

"You may be thinking that you are immune from death from demons and celestials, because of your austerities. But your opinion in that matter is not correct, on account of the following reason.

VERSE 27

सुग्रीवो न हि देवो अयम् न असुरो न च मानुषः
न दानवो न गन्धर्वो न यक्षो न च पन्नगः

sugrīvo na hi devo ayam na asuro na ca mānuṣaḥ
na dānavo na gandharvo na yakṣo na ca pannagaḥ

SYNONYMS

ayam sugrīvaḥ: this Sugreeva | na hi: is not indeed | devaḥ: a god | asuraḥ na: nor Asura the chief of evil spirits | rākṣasaḥ ca: nor a demon | dānavaḥ na: nor a child of Danu the demons | gandharvaḥ na: nor Gandhara | yakṣaḥ na: nor Yaksha | rājan: O king! | katham: how | kariṣyasi: do you | prāṇaparitrāṇam: protect your life | tasmāt: from him? |

TRANSLATION

"This Sugreeva is indeed neither a god, nor Asura the chief of evil spirits nor a demon nor a child of Danu the demon, nor Gandharva the celestial musician nor Yaksha the semi-divine being nor pannaga the serpent-demon. O King! How do you protect your life from him?"

VERSE 28

न तु धर्म उपसम्हारम् अधर्म फल सम्हितम्

na tu dharma upasamhāram adharma phala samhitam

SYNONYMS

dharmopasamhāram: the fruit of righteousness | na tu: is not | adharmaphalasamhitam: close by the result of unrighteousness | tat phalameva: that consequence of unrighteousness alone | anveti: follows as an adherent | dharmaśca: righteousness | adharma nāśanaḥ: destroys unrighteousness. |

TRANSLATION

"The fruit of righteousness does not exist together with the result of unrighteousness (eventhough he practices virtue). That consequence of unrighteousness alone follows him. Righteousness in abundance destroys unrighteousness."

VERSE 29

प्राप्तम् धर्म फलम् तावत् भवता न अत्र संशयः

prāptam dharma phalam tāvat bhavatā na atra saṃśayaḥ

SYNONYMS

dharmaphalam: the fruit of virtue | prāptam tāvat: has already been obtained | bhavatā: by you | na samśayah: there is no doubt | atra: about it | prapatsyase: you will obtain | kṣiprameva: just soon | phalamapi: even the fruit | adharmasya: of unrighteousness also." |

TRANSLATION

"You already obtained the fruit of virtue till now. There is no doubt about it. In no time, you will obtain the fruit of unrighteousness also."

VERSE 30

जन स्थान वधम् बुद्ध्वा बुद्ध्वा वालि वधम् तथा

jana sthāna vadham buddhvā buddhvā vāli vadham tathā

SYNONYMS

buddhvā: recognizing | janasthāna vadham: the killing of demons in Janasthana-forest | tathā: and | vālivadham: the killing of Vali | rāma sugrīva sakhyam ca: and about the friendship between Rama and Sugreeva | budhyasva: realise | ātmanaḥ: your own | hitam: interest. |

TRANSLATION

"Recognizing the killing of demons in the forest of Janasthana, about the killing of Vali and about the friendship between Rama and Sugreeva, realize your own interest."

VERSE 31

कामम् खल्व् अहम् अपि एकः सवाजि रथ कुन्जराम्

kāmam khalv aham api ekaḥ savāji ratha kunjarām

SYNONYMS

aham: I | eko'pi: even alone | śaktaḥ khalu: am capable indeed | nāśayitum: to destroy | laṅkām: Lanka | savājiratha kuṅjarām: along with its horses | kāmam: undoubtedly | eṣaḥ tu: However | ma: is not | niścayaḥ: a decision | tasya: of Rama. |

TRANSLATION

"I am indeed, even alone, undoubtedly, destroying Lanka, along with its horses, chariots and elephants. However, this is not in accordance with the resolution of Rama."

VERSE 32

रामेण हि प्रतिज्ञातम् हरि ऋक्ष गण सम्निधौ

rāmeṇa hi pratijñātam hari ṛkṣa gaṇa samnidhau

SYNONYMS

pratijñātamhi: It was indeed promised | rāmeṇa: by Rama | haryṛkṣagaṇa sammidhau: in the presence of troops of monkeys and bears | utsādanam: about the extermination | amitrāṇām: of enemies | yaiḥ: by whom | sītā: Seetha | pradharṣitā: was actually laid violent hands upon. |

TRANSLATION

"For, Rama, indeed, promised in the presence of troops of monkeys and bears, about the extermination of enemies, by whom Seetha was actually laid violent hands upon."

VERSE 33

अपकुर्वन् हि रामस्य साक्षात् अपि पुरम् दरः

apakurvan hi rāmasya sākṣāt api puram daraḥ

SYNONYMS

puramdaraḥ api: even Indra the Lord of celestials | sākṣāt: in person | na prāpnuyāt: cannot attain | sukham: happiness | apakurvan: if he does any harm | rāmasya: to Rama | kim punaḥ: how much more | anyaḥ janaḥ: to another person | tvadvidhaḥ: like you? |

TRANSLATION

"Even Indra the Lord of celestials, in person, cannot attain happiness if he does any harm to Rama. How much move to another person like you?"

VERSE 34

याम् सीता इति अभिजानासि या इयम् तिष्ठति ते वशे

yām sītā iti abhijānāsi yā iyam tiṣṭhati te vaśe

SYNONYMS

viddhi: know | yā imam: her | yām: whom | abhijānāsi: you recognize | sītā iti: as Seetha | tiṣṭhati: and who stays | te vaśe: in your captivity | kālarātrīti: to be none else than kalaratri (the goddess presiding over and responsible for universal dissolution) | sarva laṅkāvināśinīm: who can destroy the entire Lanka. |

TRANSLATION

"Know her, whom you recognize as Seetha and who stays in your captivity, to be none else than Kalaratri (the goddess presiding over and responsible for dissolution), who can destroy the entire Lanka."

VERSE 35

तत् अलम् काल पाशेन सीता विग्रह रूपिणा

tat alam kāla pāśena sītā vigraha rūpiṇā

SYNONYMS

tat: therefore | alam: enough | kālapāśena: of this noose of death | sītāvigraharūpiṇā: in the form of Seetha's personality | svayam skandhāvasaktena: which has been placed by yourself around your neck | ātmani: let your | kṣemam: safety | cintyatatām: be thought of. |

TRANSLATION

"Therefore, have it enough of this noose of death, in the form of Seetha's personality, which has been placed by yourself around your neck. Think well of your safety."

VERSE 36

सीतायाः तेजसा दग्धाम् राम कोप प्रपीडिताम्

sītāyāḥ tejasā dagdhām rāma kopa prapīḍitām

SYNONYMS

paśya: See | imām: this | purīm: city (of Lanka) | dagdhām: burnt away | tejasā: by the effulgence | sītāyāḥ: of Seetha | dahyamānām: and (the city too) being scorched | sāṭṭapratoḻikām: with its markets and main streets | rāma kopa pīḍitām: afflicted by the wrath of Rama. |

TRANSLATION

"See; (in the immediate future), this city of Lanka, burnt away by the effulgence of Seetha and the City too being scorched with its markets and main streets, afflicted by the wrath of Rama."

VERSE 37

स्वानि मित्राणि मन्त्रींश्च ज्ञातीन् भ्रातृन् सुतान् हितान्

svāni mitrāṇi mantrīṃśca jñātīn bhrātṛn sutān hitān

SYNONYMS

mā upānaya: do not lead | vināśam: to extermination | svāni: your own | mitrāṇi: friends | mantrīmśca: counsellors | jñātīn: kinsmen | bhrātṛin: brothers | sutān: sons | hitān: well-wishers | bhogān: enjoyments | dārāmśca: wives | laṅkāmca: and Lanka. |

TRANSLATION

"Do not lead to extermination your own friends, counsellors, kinsmen, brothers, sons, well-wishers, enjoyments, wives and Lanka."

VERSE 38

सत्यम् राक्षसराजेन्द्र शृणुष्व वचनम् मम

satyam rākṣasarājendra śṛṇuṣva vacanam mama

SYNONYMS

rākṣasarājendra: O king of demons! | śṛṇusva: listen to | mama: my | satyam: truthful | vahanam: words | rāmadāsasya: (coming as it is) from the lips of a serpent of Rama | dūtasya: of his messenger | viśeṣataḥ: and particularly | vānarasya: of a monkey. |

TRANSLATION

"O king of demons! Listen to my truthful words coming as it is from the lips of this servant of Rama, his messenger and particularly of this monkey."

VERSE 39

सर्वान् लोकान् सुसम्हृत्य सभूतान् सचराचरान्

sarvān lokān susamhṛtya sabhūtān sacarācarān

SYNONYMS

mahā yaśāḥ rāmaḥ: the renowned Rama | śaktaḥ: is capable | susamhṛtya: of completely destroying | sarvān: all | lokān: the worlds | sabhūtān: together with its five elements | sacarācarān: along with its animate and inanimate things | tathā sraṣṭum: and also to create in like manner as before | punareva: yet again. |

TRANSLATION

"The renowned Rama is capable of totally destroying all the worlds together with its five elements, along with its animate and inanimate things and also to create yet again all the worlds in like manner as before."

VERSE 40

देवासुरनरेन्द्रेषु यक्षरक्षोगणेषु च

devāsuranarendreṣu yakṣarakṣogaṇeṣu ca

TRANSLATION

"The renowned Rama, who is equal in prowess to Vishnu the lord of the preservation and among celestials, demons or the foremost of men, or among hordes of Yakshas the semi-divine beings or ogres or among all Vidyadharas, a king of super-natural beings or among Gandharvas the celestials musicians or among Uragas the semi-divine serpents or among Siddhas the holy personages having super-natural powers or among excellent Kinnaras the mythical beings with human figure and head of a horse or among all types of birds or among all living beings at all places and at all times."

VERSE 43

सर्वलोकेश्वरस्यैवम् कृत्वा विप्रियमुत्तमम्
रामस्य राजसिम्हस्य दुर्लभम् तव जीवितम्

sarvalokeśvarasyaivam kṛtvā vipriyamuttamam
rāmasya rājasimhasya durlabham tava jīvitam

SYNONYMS

kṛtvā: doing | uttamam vipriyam: a great harm | evam: in this manner | rāmasya: to Rama | sarvalokeśvarasya: the lord of all the worlds | rājasimhasya: and the lion among kings | jīvitam: survival | durlabham: is difficult | tava: for you. |

TRANSLATION

"After doing a great harm in this manner to Rama the lord of all worlds as well as the lion among kings, your survival will be difficult."

VERSE 44

देवाश्च दैत्याश्च निशाचरेन्द्र
गन्धर्वविद्याधरनागयक्षाः
रामस्य लोकत्रयनायकस्य
स्थातुम् न शक्ताः समरेषु सर्वे

devāśca daityāśca niśācarendra
gandharvavidyādharanāgayakṣāḥ
rāmasya lokatrayanāyakasya
sthātum na śaktāḥ samareṣu sarve

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

"O king of demons! Either celestials or demons or Gandharvas the celestial musicians or Vidyadharas a king of super-natural beings or Nagas the semi-divine serpents or Yakshas the semi divine beings-all of them are not able to stand before Rama the lord of the three worlds."

VERSE 45

ब्रह्म स्वयमुभूश्च तुराननो वा
रुद्रस्त्रिणेत्रस्त्रिपुरान्तको वा
इन्द्रो महेन्द्रः सुरनायको वा
त्रातुम् न शक्ता युधि रामवध्यम्

brahma svayamubhūśca turānano vā
rudrastriṇetrastripurāntako vā
indro mahendraḥ suranāyako vā
trātum na śaktā yudhi rāmavadhyam

SYNONYMS

brahmā vā: either Brahma | svayambhūḥ: the self-existing | caturānanaḥ: god with four faces | rudrā vā: or Rudra | triṇetraḥ: having three eyes | tripurāntakaḥ: and destroyer of Tripura | mahendraḥ vā: or Mahendra | indraḥ: the god of atmosphere and sky | suranāyakah: and the lord of celestials | na śaktāḥ: are not able | trātum: to protect | rāmavadhyam: the one to be killed by Rama | yudhi: in battle. |

TRANSLATION

"Either Brahma the self-existing god with four faces or Rudra with three eyes and the destroyer of Tripura (the city built of gold, silver and iron in the sky, air and earth, by Maya for the demons and burnt by Shiva), or Mahendra the god of atmosphere and sky as also the lord of celestials would not be able to protect the one to be killed by Rama in battle."

VERSE 46

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे एकपङ्चशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye sundarakāṇḍe ekapaṅcaśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

niśamya: hearing | vacaḥ: the words | sauṣṭhhavopetam: endowed with extreme skillfulness | apriyam: which were unpleasant | adīnavādinaḥ: and spoken without fear | kapeḥ: from Hanuma | saḥ apratimaḥ daśānanaḥ: the unequalled Ravana | samādiśat: ordered | vadham: the killing | tasya mahākapeḥ: of that Hanuma. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those unpleasant words endowed with extreme skillfulness and which were spoken without fear from Hanuma, that unequalled Ravana ordered for the killing of that Hanuma.
