VERSE 1

विमानात् तु सुसम्क्रम्य प्राकारम् हरि यूथपः
हनूमान् वेगवान् आसीद् यथा विद्युद् घन
अन्तरे

vimānāt tu susamkramya prākāram hari yūthapaḥ
hanūmān vegavān āsīd yathā vidyud ghana
antare

SYNONYMS

hanuman: Hanuma | hariyūdhapaḥ: the leader of vanaras | susamkramya: crossed | vimānāt: from pushpaka | prākāram: toward the fort wall | āsīt: and became | vegavān: with speed | vidhyut yathā: like a lighting | ghanantare: in the middle of cloud. |

TRANSLATION

Hanuma the leader of Vanaras crossed from pushpaka toward the fort wall and became with speed like lighting in the middle of a cloud.

VERSE 2

सम्परिक्रम्य हनुमान् रावणस्य निवेशनान्
अदृष्ट्वा जानकीम् सीताम् अब्रवीद् वचनम् कपिः

samparikramya hanumān rāvaṇasya niveśanān
adṛṣṭvā jānakīm sītām abravīd vacanam kapiḥ

SYNONYMS

kapiḥ hanuman: the simian Hanuma | samparikramya: went far | rāvaṇasya niveśanāt: from the house of Ravana | adṛṣṭvā: not seeing | sītām: Seetha | jānakīm: the daughter of king Janaka | abravīt: said | vacanam: (these)words. |

TRANSLATION

The simian Hanuma went far from the house of Ravana and not seeing Seetha, the daughter of King Janaka, said these words:

VERSE 3

भूयिष्ठम् लोडिता लन्का रामस्य चरता प्रियम्
न हि पश्यामि वैदेहीम् सीताम् सर्व अन्ग
शोभनाम्

bhūyiṣṭham loḍitā lankā rāmasya caratā priyam
na hi paśyāmi vaidehīm sītām sarva anga
śobhanām

SYNONYMS

laṅkā: the city of Lanka | bhūyiṣṭham lolitā: had been mostly explored | caratā: (by me)attempting | rāmasya priyam: the pleasure of Sri Rama | na hi paśyāmi: but I am unable to see | sītām: Seetha | sarvāṅga śobhanām: beautiful in all limbs | vaidehīm: and the daughter of Videha |

TRANSLATION

"The city of Lanka has been mostly explored by me attempting for the pleasure of Rama. But I am unable to see Seetha, beautiful in all limbs, and the daughter of Videha."

VERSE 4

पल्वलानि तटाकानि सरांसि सरितः तथा
नद्यो अनूपवन अन्ताः च दुर्गाः च धरणी धराः

palvalāni taṭākāni sarāṃsi saritaḥ tathā
nadyo anūpavana antāḥ ca durgāḥ ca dharaṇī dharāḥ

SYNONYMS

sarvāḥ vasudā: all earth | palvālāni: (consisting of) pools | taṭākāni: ponds | sarāmsi: lakes | tathā: and | saritaḥ: streams | nadyaḥ: rivers | anupavanāntaśca: and forest areas | dharaṇīdharāḥ: mountains | durgāḥ: difficult of access | ḻolitā: have been explored | na tu paśyāmi: but I did not see | jānakīm: Seetha. |

TRANSLATION

"All earth consisting of pools, ponds, lakes and streams, rivers and forest areas filled with water, mountains difficult of access have been explored but I did not see Seetha."

VERSE 5

इह सम्पातिना सीता रावणस्य निवेशने

iha sampātinā sītā rāvaṇasya niveśane

SYNONYMS

akhyātā: it has been said | gṛdhrarājena sampātinā: by the eagle king Sampaati | sītā: Seetha | iha: (to be) here | rāvaṇasya niveśane: in the house of Ravana | aham: I | na ca paśyāmi: I am unable to see | tām: her. |

TRANSLATION

"It has been said by the eagle King Sampati that Seetha is here in the house of Ravana. I am unable to see her."

VERSE 6

किम् नु सीता अथ वैदेही मैथिली जनक आत्मजा

kim nu sītā atha vaidehī maithilī janaka ātmajā

SYNONYMS

atha: otherwise | sītā: Seetha | vaidehī: belonging to Videha | maithilī: born in Mithila | janakātmaja: and daughter of king Janaka | kim nu upatiṣṭheta: can she be | vivaśā: helplessly | duṣṭacāriṇam rāvaṇam: (together with) the evil minded Ravana. |

TRANSLATION

"Otherwise Seetha belonging to Videha born in Mithila and daughter of king Janaka - Can she be helplessly together with the evil minded Ravana."

VERSE 7

क्षिप्रम् उत्पततो मन्ये सीताम् आदाय रक्षसः

kṣipram utpatato manye sītām ādāya rakṣasaḥ

SYNONYMS

manye: I think | rakśasaḥ: while Ravana | bibhyataḥ: fearing | rāmabāṇānām: Rama's arrows | kśipramutpatataḥ: flew quickly | sītām ādāya: carrying Seetha | patitā bhavet: (She) might have fallen down | antarā: in the middle(of the journey). |

TRANSLATION

"I think while Ravana fearing Rama's arrows flew quickly carrying Seetha, she might have fallen down in the middle of the journey."

VERSE 8

अथवा ह्रियमाणायाः पथि सिद्ध निषेविते

athavā hriyamāṇāyāḥ pathi siddha niṣevite

SYNONYMS

athavā: or | manye: I think | hṛdayam: the heart | āyrāyāḥ: of the noble Seetha | hṛyamāryāyāḥ: being stolen | patī: in the path | sidhhaniṣevite: served by Siddhaas | patitam: must have sunk | sāgaram prekśya: at the site of the ocean. |

TRANSLATION

"Or I think the heart of the noble Seetha being stolen in the path served by Siddhas must have sunk at the site of the ocean."

VERSE 9

रावणस्य ऊरु वेगेन भुजाभ्याम् पीडितेन च

rāvaṇasya ūru vegena bhujābhyām pīḍitena ca

SYNONYMS

manye: I think | rāvanasya uruvegeṇa: due to great speed of Ravana | bhujābhyām pīḍitenaca: and due to the torture of Ravana's shoulders | jīvitam caktam: the life has been given up | tayā āryayā: by that noble one | viśālākśyā: with wide eyes. |

TRANSLATION

"I think due to great speed of Ravana and due to the torture of Ravana's shoulders the life has been given up by that noble one with wide eyes."

VERSE 10

उपरि उपरि वा नूनम् सागरम् क्रमतः तदा

upari upari vā nūnam sāgaram kramataḥ tadā

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | kramataḥ: while being flown | sāgaram upari upari: upon the surface of the ocean | janakātmaja: Seetha | nunam: definitely | patitā: fell down | sāgare: in the ocean | viveṣṭhamāna: while wriggling. |

TRANSLATION

"Then while being flown upon the surface of the ocean, Seetha definitely fell down in the ocean while wriggling."

VERSE 11

आहो क्षुद्रेण च अनेन रक्षन्ती शीलम् आत्मनः

āho kṣudreṇa ca anena rakṣantī śīlam ātmanaḥ

SYNONYMS

aho: or | tapasvinī sītā bhakiśtā: has the austere Seetha been eaten | anena rāvaṇena: by this Ravana | kśudreṇa: the evil minded one | atmanaḥ śīlam rakśantī: while she was protecting her chastity | abandhuḥ: without any relatives(near her). |

TRANSLATION

"Or has the austere Seetha been eaten by this Ravana, the evil minded one while she was protecting her chastity without any relatives near her."

VERSE 12

अथवा राक्षस इन्द्रस्य पत्नीभिर् असित ईक्षणा

athavā rākṣasa indrasya patnībhir asita īkṣaṇā

SYNONYMS

athavā: otherwise | aduṣṭā: not being evil | asitekśaṇā: with black eyes saa = she | bhakśitā bhaviṣyati: may have been eaten | rākśasendrasya patnībhi: by the wives of Ravana | duṣṭabhāvābhi: with evil thoughts. |

TRANSLATION

"Otherwise not being evil with black eyes, She may have been eaten by the wives of Ravana with evil thoughts."

VERSE 13

सम्पूर्ण चन्द्र प्रतिमम् पद्म पत्र निभ ईक्षणम्

sampūrṇa candra pratimam padma patra nibha īkṣaṇam

SYNONYMS

kṛpaṇā: the pitiable Seetha | sampūrṇacandra pratimam: equaling full moon | padmapatra nibhyekśaṇam: with eyes equaling lotus petals | pañcantvam gatā: must have obtained death | dhyāyatī: while meditating | rāmasya vaktram: upon Rama's face. |

TRANSLATION

"The pitiable Seetha equaling full moon, with eyes equaling lotus petals must have obtained death while meditating upon Rama's face."

VERSE 14

हा राम लक्ष्मण इति एव हा अयोध्येति च मैथिली

hā rāma lakṣmaṇa iti eva hā ayodhyeti ca maithilī

SYNONYMS

vaidehī: the daughter of Videha | maithilī: Seetha | ha rāmā: O Rama | ha lakśmaṇa: O Lakshmana | ha ayodhye: O Ayodhya | iti: thus | bahuvilapya: weeping greatly | nyasta dehā bhaviṣyati: may have given up her body. |

TRANSLATION

"The daughter of Videha, Seetha. �O Rama!' �O Lakshmana!' �O Ayodhya!', thus weeping greatly may have given up her body."

VERSE 15

अथवा निहिता मन्ये रावणस्य निवेशने

athavā nihitā manye rāvaṇasya niveśane

SYNONYMS

manye: I think | athavā: otherwise | nihitā: being put | rāvaṇasya niveśane: in the house of Ravana | sītā: Seetha | nunam lālpyate: is definitely crying | pañjarastā śārikā iva: like a caged myna. |

TRANSLATION

"I think otherwise being put in the house of Ravana Seetha is definitely crying like a caged myna."

VERSE 16

जनकस्य कुले जाता राम पत्नी सुमध्यमा

janakasya kule jātā rāma patnī sumadhyamā

SYNONYMS

katham: how(can) | janakasya sutā: the daughter of King Janaka | ramapatnīm: Rama's wife | sīta: Seetha | su madhyamā: with a beautiful waist | utpala patrākśi: with eyes like black lotus petals | vrajet: obtain | rāvanasya vasam: Ravana's capture. |

TRANSLATION

"How can the daughter of King Janaka, Rama's wife Seetha with a beautiful waist, with eyes like black lotus petals obtain Ravana's capture."

VERSE 17

विनष्टा वा प्रनष्टा वा मृता वा जनक आत्मजा

vinaṣṭā vā pranaṣṭā vā mṛtā vā janaka ātmajā

SYNONYMS

na kśamam: it is not fair | nivedayutum: to let know | rāmasya priyabhāryasya: to Rama who has a dear wife | janakātmaja: (if) Seetha | vinaṣṭā vā: is lost | praṇaṣṭavā: or is not to be seen | mṛtāvā: or has died. |

TRANSLATION

"It is not fair to let know Rama who has a dear wife if Seetha is lost or is not to be seen or has died."

VERSE 18

निवेद्यमाने दोषः स्याद् दोषः स्याद् अनिवेदने

nivedyamāne doṣaḥ syād doṣaḥ syād anivedane

SYNONYMS

nivedyamāne: to be let known | syāt doṣaḥ: becomes an error | anivedane: not to let know | syāt: becomes | doṣaḥ: an error | khatham: how | kartavyam nu khalu: to perform the duty | me: to me | pratibhāti: (this) seems | viṣamam: dire (situation). |

TRANSLATION

"To be let known becomes an error; not to let know becomes an error how to perform the duty? To me this seems dire situation."

VERSE 19

अस्मिन्न् एवम् गते कर्ये प्राप्त कालम् क्षमम् च किम्

asminn evam gate karye prāpta kālam kṣamam ca kim

SYNONYMS

asmin kārye: this task | evam gate: while it goes this way | prāptakālam: the time is approaching | kim bhavet: what becomes | kśamam: appropriate | iti: thus | hanuman: Hanuma | bhūyaḥ pravicārayat: thought again | matam: (this) view point. |

TRANSLATION

"This task while it goes this way the time is approaching. What becomes appropriate" thus Hanuma thought again this view point.

VERSE 20

यदि सीताम् अदृष्ट्वा अहम् वानर इन्द्र पुरीम् इतः

yadi sītām adṛṣṭvā aham vānara indra purīm itaḥ

SYNONYMS

yadi aham gamiṣyāmi: if I go | vānarendra purīm: towards Sugreeva's city | ita ha: from here | adṛṣṭvā: without seeing | sītām: Seetha | tataḥ: from that | kaḥ: (to) what | puruṣārthaḥ bhaviṣyati: avail will this effort be. |

TRANSLATION

"If I go towards Sugreeva's city from here without seeing Seetha from that to what avail will this effort be?"

VERSE 21

मम इदम् लन्घनम् व्यर्थम् सागरस्य भविष्यति

mama idam langhanam vyartham sāgarasya bhaviṣyati

SYNONYMS

idam: this | mama: my | sāgarasya laṅghanam: crossing of the ocean | laṅkāyāḥ praveśasca: entering the city of Lanka | rākśasānām darśanam: the site of Rakshasas | vyartham bhaviṣyati: (all this) will become waste. |

TRANSLATION

"My crossing of the ocean entering the city of Lanka the site of rakshasas - all this will become waste."

VERSE 22

किम् वा वक्ष्यति सुग्रीवो हरयो व समागताः

kim vā vakṣyati sugrīvo harayo va samāgatāḥ

SYNONYMS

mām: to me | samanuprāptam: reaching | kiśkindhām: Kishkindha | kim vaksyati sugrīvaḥ: what would Sugreeva say | samāgatāḥ harayaḥ vā: or vanaras there | tau daśarāthmajau vā: or those sons of Dasharatha (what would they say). |

TRANSLATION

"To me reaching Kishkindha what would Sugreeva say or Vanaras there or those sons of Dasharatha what would they say?"

VERSE 23

गत्वा तु यदि काकुत्स्थम् वक्ष्यामि परम् अप्रियम्

gatvā tu yadi kākutstham vakṣyāmi param apriyam

SYNONYMS

gatvā: going(there) | mayā: by me | kākustham: for Rama | sītā na dṛṣṭeti: Seetha has not been seen | iti: thus | vakśāmi yadi: if I say | param apriyam: a very unpleasant (word) | tataḥ: thereafter | jīvitam tyakśati: (Rama) will give up life. |

TRANSLATION

"Going there by me for Rama, �Seetha has not been seen' - thus if I say a very unpleasant word thereafter Rama will give up life."

VERSE 24

परुषम् दारुणम् क्रूरम् तीक्ष्णम् इन्द्रिय तापनम्

paruṣam dāruṇam krūram tīkṣṇam indriya tāpanam

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | durvākhyam: bad words | sītā nimittam: belonging to Seetha | paruṣam: (that is) harsh | dāruṇam: horrible | kruram: cruel | tīkśaṇam: sharp | indriyatāpanam: sense agonizing | saḥ na bhaviṣyati: He will not exist. |

TRANSLATION

"Hearing bad word belonging to Seetha that is harsh, horrible, cruel, sharp, sense agonizing, He will not exist."

VERSE 25

तम् तु कृच्च्र गतम् दृष्ट्वा पन्चत्व गत मानसम्

tam tu kṛccra gatam dṛṣṭvā pancatva gata mānasam

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | tam: that Rama | kṛcchra gatam: being with troubles | pañcatva gatamānasam: being with a heart towards death | lakśmaṇaḥ: Lakshmana | bhṛśānuraktaḥ: one with great love | medhāvi: and an intellectual | na bhaviṣyati: will not exist. |

TRANSLATION

"Seeing that Rama being with troubles, being with a heart towards death, Lakshmana, one with great love and an intellectual will not exist."

VERSE 26

विनष्टौ भ्रातरौ श्रुत्वा भरतो अपि मरिष्यति

vinaṣṭau bhrātarau śrutvā bharato api mariṣyati

SYNONYMS

śṛtvā: hearing | brātarau: brothers | vinaṣṭau: to be dead | bharataḥ api: Bharata also | mariṣyati: will die | dṛṣṭvā: seeing | mṛtam: the dead | bharatam: Bharata | śatrughnaśca: Shatrughana also | na bhaviṣyati: will not exist. |

TRANSLATION

"Hearing brothers to be dead, Bharata also will die. Seeing the dead Bharata, Shatrughana also will not exist."

VERSE 27

पुत्रान् मृतान् समीक्ष्य अथ न भविष्यन्ति मातरः

putrān mṛtān samīkṣya atha na bhaviṣyanti mātaraḥ

SYNONYMS

atha: thereafter | sa mīkśya: seeing | putrān: sons | mṛtān: to be dead | mātaraḥ: the mothers | kausalyā ca: Kausalya sumitraa | ca: and Sumitra | kaikeyī ca: and Kaikeyi | na bhaviṣyanti: will not exist | samsayaḥ na: there is no doubt. |

TRANSLATION

"Thereafter seeing sons to be dead the mothers Kausalya, Sumitra and Kaikeyi will not exist - there is no doubt."

VERSE 28

कृतज्ञः सत्य संधः च सुग्रीवः प्लवग अधिपः

kṛtajñaḥ satya saṃdhaḥ ca sugrīvaḥ plavaga adhipaḥ

SYNONYMS

kṛtajñaḥ: grateful | satyasandhaśca: true to pledge | sugrīvaḥ: Sugreeva | plavagādhi paḥ: the leader of Vanaras | dṛṣṭvā: seeing | rāmam: Rama | tathā gatam: die in that way | jīvitam tyakśyati: will give up life | tataḥ: thereafter. |

TRANSLATION

"Grateful, true to pledge Sugreeva, the leader of Vanaras, seeing Rama the leader of Vanaras seeing Rama die in that way will give up life thereafter."

VERSE 29

दुर्मना व्यथिता दीना निरानन्दा तपस्विनी

durmanā vyathitā dīnā nirānandā tapasvinī

SYNONYMS

pīḍitā: being tortured | bhartruśokena: by the sorrow of husband | vyathitā: made sad | durmanāḥ: by a gloomy heart | dīnā: disconsolate | nirānandā: without happiness | tapasvinī: to be pitied | rumā: Ruma | tyakśati: will give up | jīvitam: life. |

TRANSLATION

"Being tortured by the sorrow of husband, made sad by a gloomy heart, disconsolate without happiness, to be pitied, Ruma will give up life."

VERSE 30

वालिजेन तु दुह्खेन पीडिता शोक कर्शिता

vālijena tu duhkhena pīḍitā śoka karśitā

SYNONYMS

pīḍitā: being distressed | vālijenadukhena: from the sorrow of Vali | śokakarśitā: being emaciated from grief | tārāpi: Tara also | na bhaviṣyati: will not exist | rājñi: (while) the king Sugreeva | pañcatvam gate: is obtaining death. |

TRANSLATION

"Being distressed from the sorrow of Vali, being emaciated from grief, Tara also will not exist while the king Sugreeva is obtaining death."

VERSE 31

माता पित्रोर् विनाशेन सुग्रीव व्यसनेन च

mātā pitror vināśena sugrīva vyasanena ca

SYNONYMS

kumāraḥ: the young | angada api: Angada also | vināśenā: from the death | mātā pitro: of mother and father | vyasanena: from the grief | surīvasya: of Sugreeva | kasmāt: why will (he) | dhārayiṣyati jīvitam: retain life. |

TRANSLATION

"The young Angada also from the death of mother and father, from the grief of Sugreeva - why will he retain life?"

VERSE 32

भर्तृजेन तु शोकेन अभिभूता वन ओकसः

bhartṛjena tu śokena abhibhūtā vana okasaḥ

SYNONYMS

vanaukasaḥ: Vanaras | hyabhibhūtāḥ: being rejected | bhatrujena duḥkhena: by the sorrow due to their lord | abhihaniṣyanti: will strike | śirāmsi: their heads | talaiḥ: with palms | muṣṭibhirevaca: and fists. |

TRANSLATION

"Vanaras being rejected by the sorrow due to their lord will strike their heads with palms and fists."

VERSE 33

सान्त्वेन अनुप्रदानेन मानेन च यशस्विना

sāntvena anupradānena mānena ca yaśasvinā

SYNONYMS

vānārāḥ: Vanaras | lālitāḥ: loved | yaśasvinā kapirājeḥ: by the famous Sugreeva | sāntvenā: through good words | anupradānena: through small gifts | mānena: through respect | cakśyanti: will give up praNaan = lives. |

TRANSLATION

"Vanaras loved by the famous king Sugreeva through good words, through small gifts, through respect will give up lives."

VERSE 34

न वनेषु न शैलेषु न निरोधेषु वा पुनः

na vaneṣu na śaileṣu na nirodheṣu vā punaḥ

SYNONYMS

kapikuñjarāḥ: best among Vanaras | na anubhaviṣyanti: will not enjoy | sametya: together | krīḍām: sport | vaneṣu: in forest | na śaileṣu: not on mountains | nirodheṣu vā punaḥ: not again in covered places. |

TRANSLATION

"Best among Vanaras will not enjoy together sport in forest, not on mountains, not again in covered places."

VERSE 35

सपुत्र दाराः सामात्या भर्तृ व्यसन पीडिताः

saputra dārāḥ sāmātyā bhartṛ vyasana pīḍitāḥ

SYNONYMS

sa putra dhārāḥ: together with wife and children | sāmātyāḥ: and together with ministers | bhartuvyasana pīḍitāḥ: being tortured by grief of their lord | patiṣyanti: they will fall down | śailāgrebhyaḥ: from top of mountains | sameṣu: on to flat lands | viṣameṣu ca: and on to rugged lands. |

TRANSLATION

"Together with wife and children and together with ministers being tortured by grief of their lord, they will fall down from top of mountains on to flat lands and on to rugged lands."

VERSE 36

विषम् उद्बन्धनम् वा अपि प्रवेशम् ज्वलनस्य वा

viṣam udbandhanam vā api praveśam jvalanasya vā

SYNONYMS

vānarāḥ: Vanaras | pracariṣyanti: will perform(death) | viṣam: (taking) poison | utbandhanam vāpi: or get hanged | jvalanasya praveśam vā: or entering fire | upavāsam: or fasting | atho: or | śastram: a weapon. |

TRANSLATION

"Vanaras will perform death by taking poison or getting hanged or entering fire or fasting or a weapon."

VERSE 37

घोरम् आरोदनम् मन्ये गते मयि भविष्यति

ghoram ārodanam manye gate mayi bhaviṣyati

SYNONYMS

mayi gate: while I am going | manye: I think | ikśvāku kula nāśaśca: (about) the destruction of Ikshvaaku dynasty | nāśaścaiva: and destruction | vanaukasām: of Vanaras | bhaviṣyati: and there will be | ghoram ārodhanam: a terrible wail. |

TRANSLATION

"While I am going I think about the destruction of Ikshvaaku dynasty and destruction of Vanaras and there will be a terrible wail."

VERSE 38

सो अहम् न एव गमिष्यामि किष्किन्धाम् नगरीम् इतः

so aham na eva gamiṣyāmi kiṣkindhām nagarīm itaḥ

SYNONYMS

aham: I | naiva gamiṣyāmi: will not go | itaḥ: from here | kiśkindhām nagarīm: to the kishkindha city | na ca śakśyāmyaham: (am)not capable | draṣṭum: to see | sugrīvam: Sugreeva | maithilīm vinā: without Seetha. |

TRANSLATION

"I will not go from here to the Kishkindha city. I am not capable to see Sugreeva without Seetha."

VERSE 39

मयि अगच्चति च इहस्थे धर्म आत्मानौ महा रथौ

mayi agaccati ca ihasthe dharma ātmānau mahā rathau

SYNONYMS

mayī: I | agacchati: while not going | ihasthe: being here | dharmātmānau: those virtuous ones | mahā rathau: those great warriors | tau: those two Rama and Lakshmana | dhariṣyate: will live | āśayā: by hope | vānarāśca: Vanaras also | manasvinaḥ: who are agile. |

TRANSLATION

"I while not going, being here those virtuous ones, those great warriors those two Rama and Lakshmana will live by hope. Vanaras also who are agile will live."

VERSE 40

हस्त आदानो मुख आदानो नियतो वृक्ष मूलिकः

hasta ādāno mukha ādāno niyato vṛkṣa mūlikaḥ

SYNONYMS

41| adṛṣtvā: without seeing | janakātmajā: Seetha | hastā danaḥ: (subsisting on) whatever falls on hand | mukhādānaḥ: whatever comes to mouth | niyataḥ: being self restrained | bhaviṣyāmi: will become | vāna prastaḥ: a hermit | vṛkśamūlikaḥ: living on trees and herbs | sāgarānupaje dese: at a region near ocean | bahumūlaphalodake: which has many roots |

TRANSLATION

"Without seeing Seetha subsisting on whatever falls on hand, whatever comes to mouth, being self restrained I will become a hermit living on trees and herbs at a region near ocean which has many roots, fruits and much water."

VERSE 42

चिताम् कृत्वा प्रवेक्ष्यामि समिद्धम् अरणी सुतम्
उपविष्टस्य वा सम्यग् लिन्गिनम् साधयिष्यतः

citām kṛtvā pravekṣyāmi samiddham araṇī sutam
upaviṣṭasya vā samyag linginam sādhayiṣyataḥ

SYNONYMS

pravekśyāmi: or I will enter | araṇīsutam: fire | samidham: which is glowing | citām kṛtvā: after making a funeral pile | : or | upaviṣṭasya: while sitting | sādhayiṣyataḥ: performing | liṅgnam: fasting onto death | sariram bhakśayiṣyanti: my body will be eaten | vāyasāḥ: by crows | śvapadāni ca: and by beasts of prey. |

TRANSLATION

"Or I will enter fire which is glowing after making a funeral pile or while sitting performing fasting onto death my body will be eaten by crows and by beasts of prey."

VERSE 43

इदम् अपि ऋषिभिर् दृष्टम् निर्याणम् इति मे मतिः

idam api ṛṣibhir dṛṣṭam niryāṇam iti me matiḥ

SYNONYMS

idam: this | niryāṇam: way to giving up body | dṛṣṭam: has been seen | maharṣibhi: by sages | iti: this | me matiḥ: is my | jānakīm na cetpaśyāmi: if I do not see Seetha | pravekśyāmi: I will enter | samyak āpaḥ: lot of water. |

TRANSLATION

"This way to giving up body has been seen by sages. This is my opinion if I do not see Seetha, I will enter lot of water."

VERSE 44

सुजात मूला सुभगा कीर्ति माला यशस्विनी

sujāta mūlā subhagā kīrti mālā yaśasvinī

SYNONYMS

sītām apaśyataḥ: not seeing Seetha | mama kīrtimālā: my garland of glory | cirarātrāya: of long time | sujātamūla: with a strong foundation | subhagā: beautiful one | yaśasvinī: together with fame | prabhagnā: has been destroyed. |

TRANSLATION

"Not seeing Seetha, my garland of glory of long time with a strong foundation, beautiful one together with fame has been destroyed."

VERSE 45

तापसो वा भविष्यामि नियतो वृक्ष मूलिकः

tāpaso vā bhaviṣyāmi niyato vṛkṣa mūlikaḥ

SYNONYMS

bhaviṣyāmi: I will become | tāpasovā: as a hermit | niyataḥ: who is self restrained | vṛkśamūlikaḥ: resorting to trees and herbs | na pratigamiṣyāmi: I will not go | itaḥ: from here | adṛṣṭvā: not seeing | tām: Seetha | asitekśanām: with black eyes. |

TRANSLATION

"I will become a hermit who is self restrained resorting to trees and herbs, I will not go from here not seeing Seetha with black eyes."

VERSE 46

यदि इतः प्रतिगच्चामि सीताम् अनधिगम्य ताम्

yadi itaḥ pratigaccāmi sītām anadhigamya tām

SYNONYMS

yadi pratigacchāmi: if I go back | itaḥ: from here | anadhigamyā: without knowing | tām sītām: that Seetha | na bhaviṣyati: there will not be | angadhaḥ: Angada | sarvaiḥ tai vānaraiḥ saḥ: together with all those Vanaras. |

TRANSLATION

"If I go back from here without knowing that Seetha, there will not be Angada together with all those Vanaras."

VERSE 47

विनाशे बहवो दोषा जीवन् प्राप्नोति भद्रकम्

vināśe bahavo doṣā jīvan prāpnoti bhadrakam

SYNONYMS

bahavaḥ doṣāḥ: there are lot of blemishes | vināśe: in dieing | jīvan: one who is alive | paśyati: sees | bhadrāṇi: auspicious things | tasmāt: for that reason | dhariṣyāmi: I will keep | prāṇān: my life | druvaḥ: it is definite | jīvitasamgāḥ: for the meeting of people who are alive. |

TRANSLATION

"There are lots of blemishes in dying; one who is alive sees auspicious things. For that reason I will keep my life. It is definite for the meeting of people who are alive."

VERSE 48

एवम् बहु विधम् दुह्खम् मनसा धारयन् मुहुः

evam bahu vidham duhkham manasā dhārayan muhuḥ

SYNONYMS

kapikuñjaraḥ: Hanuma | dhārayan: carrying | manasā: in mind | bahuvidham duḥkham: sorrow of various kinds | muhuḥ: again and again | nādhyagacchat: did not get | tadā: then | śokhasya pāram: the crossing of sorrow. |

TRANSLATION

Hanuma carrying in mind sorrow of various kinds again and again did not get then the crossing of sorrow.

VERSE 49

रावणम् वा वधिष्यामि दशग्रीवम् महा बलम्

rāvaṇam vā vadhiṣyāmi daśagrīvam mahā balam

SYNONYMS

: otherwise | vadhiṣyāmi: I will kill | rāvaṇam: Ravana | daśagrīvam: with ten heads | mahābalam: with great prowess | hṛtā: the stolen | sītā: Seetha | kāmam astu: whatever happened to her | pratyācīrṇam bhaviṣyati: this will be a revenge to that. |

TRANSLATION

"Otherwise I will kill Ravana with ten heads, with great prowess. Whatever happened to the stolen Seetha, this will be revenge to that."

VERSE 50

अथवा एनम् समुत्क्षिप्य उपरि उपरि सागरम्

athavā enam samutkṣipya upari upari sāgaram

SYNONYMS

athavā: otherwise | samutkśipyā: carrying | evam: this Ravana | sāgaram uparyupari: over the surface of ocean | upahariṣyāmi: I will take him | rāmāya: to Rama | paśum iva: like an animal | paśupate: to the lord of animals. |

TRANSLATION

"Otherwise carrying this Ravana over the surface of ocean I will take him to Rama like an animal to the lord of animals."

VERSE 51

इति चिन्ता समापन्नः सीताम् अनधिगम्य ताम्

iti cintā samāpannaḥ sītām anadhigamya tām

SYNONYMS

vānaraḥ: Hanuma | anadhigamya: not seeing | tām sītām: that Seetha | iti: thus | samāpannaḥ: begetting | cintām: sorrow | cintayāmāsa: thought | dhyānaśokaparītātma: with a mind cluttered with thoughts and sorrow. |

TRANSLATION

Hanuma not seeing that Seetha thus begetting sorrow, thought with a mind cluttered with thoughts and sorrow.

VERSE 52

यावत् सीताम् न पश्यामि राम पत्नीम् यशस्विनीम्

yāvat sītām na paśyāmi rāma patnīm yaśasvinīm

SYNONYMS

yāvat: to wherever | paśyāmi: I see | sītām: Seetha | rāmapatnīm: the wife of Sri Rama | yaśasvinīm: and one with fame | tavat: till there | vicinomi: I will search | etām laṅkām purīm: the city of Lanka | punaḥ punaḥ: again and again. |

TRANSLATION

"To wherever I see Seetha, the wife of Sri Rama and one with fame, till there I will search the city of Lanka again and again."

VERSE 53

सम्पाति वचनाच् च अपि रामम् यदि आनयामि अहम्

sampāti vacanāc ca api rāmam yadi ānayāmi aham

SYNONYMS

sampāti vacanāt: based on words of Sampati | aham ānayāmi yadi: if I bring | rāmam: Sri Rama(then) | raghavaḥ: Sri Rama | apasyan: not seeing | bhāryām: wife | nirdahet: will burn | sarva vānarān: all Vanaras. |

TRANSLATION

"Based on words of Sampati if I bring Sri Rama then Sri Rama not seeing wife will burn all Vanaras."

VERSE 54

इह एव नियत आहारो वत्स्यामि नियत इन्द्रियः

iha eva niyata āhāro vatsyāmi niyata indriyaḥ

SYNONYMS

niyatāhāraḥ: with limited food | yatendriyaḥ: and with restrained senses | vatsyāmi: and I live | ihaiva: here itself | matkṛte: by my deed | te naravānarāḥ: those men and vanaras | na vinaśeyuḥ: let they not be destroyed. |

TRANSLATION

"With limited food and with restrained senses, I live here itself. By my deed those men and vanaras - let they not be destroyed."

VERSE 55

अशोक वनिका च अपि महती इयम् महा द्रुमा

aśoka vanikā ca api mahatī iyam mahā drumā

SYNONYMS

: whatever | iyam: this | aśokavanikā: Ashoka garden | mahādṛmā: with great trees | dṛśyate: is being seen | imam: this | adhigamiṣyāmi: I will obtain | na vicitāḥ: has not been searched | mayā: by me. |

TRANSLATION

"Whatever this Ashoka garden with great trees is being seen this I will obtain. This has not been searched by me."

VERSE 56

वसून् रुद्राम्ः तथा आदित्यान् अश्विनौ मरुतो अपि च

vasūn rudrāmḥ tathā ādityān aśvinau maruto api ca

SYNONYMS

namaskṛtvā: saluting | vasūn: the eight Vasus | rudrān: Rudras | tathā: and | ādityān: Adityas | asvinau: the two Aswinis | maruto api ca: seven maruts | gamiṣyāmi: I will go | śokavardhanaḥ: to increase the grief | rakśasām: of Rakshasas. |

TRANSLATION

"Saluting the eight Vasus, Rudras and Adityas, the two Aswinis, seven Maruts, I will go to increase the grief of Rakshasas."

VERSE 57

जित्वा तु राक्षसान् देवीम् इक्ष्वाकु कुल नन्दिनीम्

jitvā tu rākṣasān devīm ikṣvāku kula nandinīm

SYNONYMS

jitvātu: defeating | sarvān rakśasān: all Rakshasas | sampradāsyāmi: I will give | ikśvāku kulanandinī: Seetha who gives happiness to Ikshvaaku dynasty | rāmaya: to Sri Rama | sidhhim yathā: as the fruit of austerity | tapasvine: to an ascetic. |

TRANSLATION

"Defeating all rakshasas, I will give Seetha, who gives happiness to Ikshvaaku dynasty to Sri Rama as the fruit of austerity to an ascetic."

VERSE 58

स मुहूर्तम् इव ध्यात्वा चिन्ता विग्रथित इन्द्रियः

sa muhūrtam iva dhyātvā cintā vigrathita indriyaḥ

SYNONYMS

mahā tejāḥ: the great gloried | mārutātmajaḥ: son of Vayu | saḥ hanuman: that Hanuma | vudatiṣṭat: got up | cintāḥ grathitedriyaḥ: with his senses tied by grief | dhyātvā: meditating | muhurtam iva: for a moment. |

TRANSLATION

The gloried son of Vayu that Hanuma got up with his senses tied by grief.

VERSE 59

नमो अस्तु रामाय सलक्ष्मणाय
देव्यै च तस्यै जनक आत्मजायै
नमो अस्तु रुद्र
इन्द्र यम अनिलेभ्यो
नमो अस्तु चन्द्र अर्क मरुद् गणेभ्यः

namo astu rāmāya salakṣmaṇāya
devyai ca tasyai janaka ātmajāyai
namo astu rudra
indra yama anilebhyo
namo astu candra arka marud gaṇebhyaḥ

TRANSLATION

"Let there be salutations to Sri Rama together with Lakshmana, also to that, who is divine let there be salutations. To Rudra, Indra, Yama and Vaayu let there be salutations."

VERSE 60

स तेभ्यः तु नमः कृत्वा सुग्रीवाय च मारुतिः
दिशः सर्वाः समालोक्य अशोक वनिकाम् प्रति

sa tebhyaḥ tu namaḥ kṛtvā sugrīvāya ca mārutiḥ
diśaḥ sarvāḥ samālokya aśoka vanikām prati

SYNONYMS

saḥ marutiḥ: that Hanuma | namaskṛtvā: saluting | tebhyaḥ: to all those | sugrīvāya ca: and also to Sugreeva | samālokya: observing | sarvāḥ diśaḥ: all directions | gataḥ: went | aśokavanikām: towards Ashoka garden. |

TRANSLATION

That Hanuma saluting to all those and also to Sugreeva, observing all directions went towards Ashoka garden.

VERSE 61

स गत्वा मनसा पूर्वम् अशोक वनिकाम् शुभाम्
उत्तरम् चिन्तयाम् आस वानरो मारुत आत्मजः

sa gatvā manasā pūrvam aśoka vanikām śubhām
uttaram cintayām āsa vānaro māruta ātmajaḥ

SYNONYMS

mārutātmajaḥ: the son of Vayu | saḥ vānara: that Vanara | gatvā: went | manasā: by mind | pūrvam: before itself | aśoka vanikām: toward that Ashoka garden | śubham: the auspicious one | cintayāmāsa: pondered | uttaram: the task to be done later. |

TRANSLATION

The son of Vayu, that Vanara went by mind before itself toward that Ashoka garden. The auspicious one pondered the task to be done later.

VERSE 62

ध्रुवम् तु रक्षो बहुला भविष्यति वन आकुला
अशोक वनिका चिन्त्या सर्व संस्कार संस्कृता

dhruvam tu rakṣo bahulā bhaviṣyati vana ākulā
aśoka vanikā cintyā sarva saṃskāra saṃskṛtā

SYNONYMS

aśokavanikā: the Ashoka garden | dṛvam: definitely | bhaviṣyati: will be | rakśobahulā: with many rakshasas | vanākulā: filled with trees | sarvasamsāra samskṛtā: adorned with various cultures | puṇyā: and sacred. |

TRANSLATION

"The Ashoka garden definitely will be with many rakshasas, filled with trees, adorned with various cultures and sacred."

VERSE 63

रक्षिणः च अत्र विहिता नूनम् रक्षन्ति पादपान्
भगवान् अपि सर्व आत्मा न अतिक्षोभम्
प्रवायति

rakṣiṇaḥ ca atra vihitā nūnam rakṣanti pādapān
bhagavān api sarva ātmā na atikṣobham
pravāyati

SYNONYMS

tatra: there | mūlam: definitely | rakśinaśca: guards | rakśyanti: will be protecting | vihitāha: assigned | pādapān: trees | sarvātma: omni present | bhagavān api: lord Vayu also | pravāti vai: will be blowing by | nātikśobham: without force | mayā: by me | iyam atmā: this body | samkśiptaḥ: has been made small | rāmādhe: for the sake of Sri Rama | ravaṇasya ca: and (to avoid) Ravana. |

TRANSLATION

"There definitely guards will be protecting assigned, trees, omnipresent Lord Vayu also will be blowing by without force, and by me this body has been made small for the sake of Sri Rama and to avoid Ravana."

VERSE 64

सिद्धिम् मे सम्विधास्यन्ति देवाः सर्षि गणाः त्व् इह

siddhim me samvidhāsyanti devāḥ sarṣi gaṇāḥ tv iha

TRANSLATION

"Devas together with ascetics will make success to me here, self born Brahma the divine one and devas and Agni and Vaayu, Devendra wearing the weapon of Vajra and Varuna with Pasha in hand and also the Sun and the moon and the aswinis. The great ones Maruts and Eshwara may give my success. Whoever is the lord of all living creatures among all living beings others who being unseen exist in the path may give success to me."

VERSE 68

तद् उन्नसम् पाण्डुर दन्तम् अव्रणम्
शुचि स्मितम् पद्म पलाश लोचनम्
द्रक्ष्ये तद्
आर्या वदनम् कदा न्व् अहम्
प्रसन्न तारा अधिप तुल्य दर्शनम्

tad unnasam pāṇḍura dantam avraṇam
śuci smitam padma palāśa locanam
drakṣye tad
āryā vadanam kadā nv aham
prasanna tārā adhipa tulya darśanam

SYNONYMS

kadā: when | aham drakśye nu: will I see | tat ārya vadanam: that noble face | unnasam: with a high nose | pāṇḍuram dantam: with white teeth | avraṇam: without any injuries | śucismitam: with a bright smile | padmaphalāśa locanam: with eyes resembling lotus petals | prasanna tāradhipa tulya darśanam: with sight equaling the splendor of clear full moon. |

TRANSLATION

"When will I see that noble face with a high nose, with white teeth without any injuries with a bright smile, with eyes resembling lotus petals with sight equaling the splendor of clear full moon?"

VERSE 69

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे त्रयोदशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye sundarakāṇḍe trayodaśaḥ sargaḥ

kadam: how | sā abalā: that powerless Seetha | tapasvinī: helpless one | balābhibhūtā: forcefully taken away | kśudreṇa: (by the) mean | pāpena: vile (Ravana) | nṛśamsa karmaṇa: with a cruel action | sudāruṇa alankṛta veṣa dhāriṇā: with a horribly decorated form | bhavet nu: will fall | me dṛṣṭipathe: in the range of my sight | adya: today. |

TRANSLATION

"How that powerless Seetha, a helpless one, forcefully taken away by the mean vile Ravana with a cruel action, with a horribly decorated form will fall in the range of my sight today."
