VERSE 1

ततः पक्षि निनादेन वृक्ष भन्ग स्वनेन च
बभूवुः त्रास सम्भ्रान्ताः सर्वे लन्का निवासिनः

tataḥ pakṣi ninādena vṛkṣa bhanga svanena ca
babhūvuḥ trāsa sambhrāntāḥ sarve lankā nivāsinaḥ

SYNONYMS

pakṣininādena: at the sound of birds | vṛkṣabhaṇga svanena: and at the sound of falling trees | sarve: all | laṅkānivāsinaḥ: those dwelling in Lanka | tataḥ: then | babhūvaḥ: became | trāsasambhrāntāḥ: trembled with fear. |

TRANSLATION

At the screaming sound of birds and at the sound of the crash of falling trees, all the inhabitants of Lanka then became trembled with fear.

VERSE 2

विद्रुताः च भय त्रस्ता विनेदुः मृग पक्षुणः
रक्षसाम् च निमित्तानि क्रूराणि प्रतिपेदिरे

vidrutāḥ ca bhaya trastā vineduḥ mṛga pakṣuṇaḥ
rakṣasām ca nimittāni krūrāṇi pratipedire

SYNONYMS

vidrutāḥ: Made to run to-and-fro | bhayatrastāḥ: and getting frightened | mṛga pakṣiṇaḥ: beasts and birds | vineduḥ: began to scream | krūrāṇi: atrocious | nimittāni: omens | pratipedire: made their appearance | rakṣasāmca: before the demons. |

TRANSLATION

Made to run to-and-fro and getting frightened, beasts and birds began to scream. Atrocious omens made their appearance before the demons.

VERSE 3

ततो गतायाम् निद्रायाम् राक्षस्यो विकृत आननाः
तत् वनम् ददृशुः भग्नम् तम् च वीरम् महाकपिम्

tato gatāyām nidrāyām rākṣasyo vikṛta ānanāḥ
tat vanam dadṛśuḥ bhagnam tam ca vīram mahākapim

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | vikṛtānanāḥ: the ugly-faced | rākṣasya: female-demon | nidrāyām gatāyām: whose sleep has gone | dadṛśuḥ: saw | tatvanam: that grove | bhagnam: which was demolished | tam viram mahākapim: and that grea heroic monkey. |

TRANSLATION

Then, the ugly-faced female-demons, whose sleep has vanished, found that grove demolished and saw that great heroic monkey.

VERSE 4

स ता दृष्ट्व महाबाहुः महासत्त्वो महाबलः
चकार सुमहत् रूपम् राक्षसीनाम् भय आवहम्

sa tā dṛṣṭva mahābāhuḥ mahāsattvo mahābalaḥ
cakāra sumahat rūpam rākṣasīnām bhaya āvaham

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | tāḥ: those female-demons | saḥ: that Hanuma | mahābāhuḥ: the mighty armed | mahā sattvaḥ: endowed with a great courage | mahābalaḥ: and night | cakāra: assumed | sumahat: a gigantic | rūpam: form | bhayāvaham: which created a terror | rākṣasīnām: to the female demons. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing those female-demons, the mighty armed Hanuma endowed with a great courage and might, assumed a gigantic form which created a terror to the female-demons.

VERSE 5

ततः तम् गिरि सम्काशम् अतिकायम् महाबलम्
राक्षस्यो वानरम् दृष्ट्वा पप्रच्छुः जनक आत्मजाम्

tataḥ tam giri samkāśam atikāyam mahābalam
rākṣasyo vānaram dṛṣṭvā papracchuḥ janaka ātmajām

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: beholding | tam vānaram: the monkey | mahābalam: endowed with a great strength | atikāyam: and having a gigantic body | girisamkāśam: looking like a mountain | rākṣasya: the female demons | tataḥ: then | papracchuḥ: asked | janakātmajam: Seetha (as follows): |

TRANSLATION

Beholding that mighty monkey having a gigantic body similar to a mountain, the female-demons then asked Seetha (as follows):

VERSE 6

को अयम् कस्य कुतो वा अयम् किम् निमित्तम् इह आगतः
कथम् त्वया सह अनेन सम्वादः कृत इति उत

ko ayam kasya kuto vā ayam kim nimittam iha āgataḥ
katham tvayā saha anena samvādaḥ kṛta iti uta

SYNONYMS

kaḥayam: who is he? | kasya: whose (messenger) is he? | kutaḥ: from where | kim nimittam: and for what purpose | ayam: he | āgatam: has come | iha: here? | uta: and | samvādaḥ: a conversation | kṛtaḥ: was held | anena: by him | tvayā saha: with you? |

TRANSLATION

"Who is he? Whose messenger is he? From where and for what purpose he has come here? Wherefore a conversation was held by him with you?"

VERSE 7

आचक्ष्व नो विशाल अक्षि मा भूत् ते सुभगे भयम्
सम्वादम् असित अपान्गे त्वया किम् कृतवान् अयम्

ācakṣva no viśāla akṣi mā bhūt te subhage bhayam
samvādam asita apānge tvayā kim kṛtavān ayam

SYNONYMS

viśālākṣi: O large-eyed Seetha! | acakṣya: tell | naḥ: us | mā bhūt: let there be no | bhayam: fear | te: for you | subhage: O fortunate lady! | asitāpāṅge: O lady having black outer corners of the eye! | kim: what | kṛtavān: did | ayam: he | samvādam: talk | tvayā: to you? |

TRANSLATION

"O large-eyed Seetha! Tell us. Let there be no fear for you, O fortunate lady! What did he speak to you? O lady having black outer eye-corners!"

VERSE 8

अथ अब्रवीत् तदा साध्वी सीता सर्व अन्ग शोभना
रक्षसाम् काम रूपाणाम् विज्ञाने मम का गतिः

atha abravīt tadā sādhvī sītā sarva anga śobhanā
rakṣasām kāma rūpāṇām vijñāne mama kā gatiḥ

SYNONYMS

atha: thereupon | sītā: Seetha | sādhvī: the virtuous lady | sarvāṇga sundarī: having complete beauty of all limbs | tadā: then | abravīt: spoke | : where is | gatiḥ: ability | mama: for me | vijñāne: to know | rakṣasām: about the demons | bhīma rupāṇām: having terrific form? |

TRANSLATION

Thereupon Seetha the virtuous lady, having a complete beauty of all limbs, spoke as follows: "Where is the ability for me to know about the demons of a terrific form?"

VERSE 9

यूयम् एव अस्य जानीत यो अयम् यत् वा करिष्यति
अहिः एव अहेः पादान् विजानाति न संशयः

yūyam eva asya jānīta yo ayam yat vā kariṣyati
ahiḥ eva aheḥ pādān vijānāti na saṃśayaḥ

SYNONYMS

yūyameva: you alone | abhijānīta: can recognise | yaḥ: who | ayam: he is | yadvā: and what | kariṣyati: he does | ahireva: a serpent alone | vijānāti: can know | pādān: the feet | aheḥ: of a serpent | na samśayaḥ: there is no doubt. |

TRANSLATION

"You alone can recognise who he is and what he does. A serpent only can recognise the feet of another serpent. There is no doubt about it."

VERSE 10

अहम् अपि अस्य भीता अस्मि न एनम् जानामि को अन्वयम्
वेद्मि राक्षसम् एव एनम् काम रूपिणम् आगतम्

aham api asya bhītā asmi na enam jānāmi ko anvayam
vedmi rākṣasam eva enam kāma rūpiṇam āgatam

SYNONYMS

aham api: I am also | bhītā asmi: frightened | asya: of him | aham: I | na jānāmi: do not know | konu: who | enam: him | vedmi: I know | kāmarūpiṇam: who can assume any form at his will raakSasameva = only as a demon | āgatam: who arrived here. |

TRANSLATION

"By seeing him, I too get frightened. I do not know who he is. I only know him as a demon, able to assume any form at his will, who arrived here."

VERSE 11

वैदेह्या वचनम् श्रुत्वा राक्षस्यो विद्रुता द्रुतम्
स्थिताः काश्चित् गताः काश्चित् रावणाय निवेदितुम्

vaidehyā vacanam śrutvā rākṣasyo vidrutā drutam
sthitāḥ kāścit gatāḥ kāścit rāvaṇāya niveditum

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | vacanam: the words | vaidehyāḥ: of Seetha | rākṣasyaḥ: (some) female-demons | vidrutāḥ: dispersed | diśaḥ: to (different) quarters | kāścit: and some others | sthitāḥ: stayed back | yatāḥ: went | rāvaṇāya: to Ravana | niveditum: to inform (about the matter). |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Seetha some female-demons fled to different directions. Some stayed back. Some others went to Ravana to inform about the matter.

VERSE 12

रावणस्य समीपे तु राक्षस्यो विकृत आननाः
विरूपम् वानरम् भीमम् आख्यतुम् उपचक्रमुः

rāvaṇasya samīpe tu rākṣasyo vikṛta ānanāḥ
virūpam vānaram bhīmam ākhyatum upacakramuḥ

SYNONYMS

samīpa: in the presence | rāvaṇasya: of Ravana | rākṣasyaḥ: the female-demons | vikṛtānanaḥ: of ugly faces | upacakramuḥ: started | ākhyātum: to tell | vānaram: about the monkey | virūpam: who was monstrous | bhīmam: and terrific. |

TRANSLATION

After approaching Ravana, the female demons of ugly faces started to tell (as follows) of the monstrous and terrific monkey.

VERSE 13

अशोक वनिका मध्ये राजन् भीम वपुः कपिः
सीतया कृत सम्वादः तिष्ठति अमित विक्रमः

aśoka vanikā madhye rājan bhīma vapuḥ kapiḥ
sītayā kṛta samvādaḥ tiṣṭhati amita vikramaḥ

SYNONYMS

rājan: O king! | kapiḥ: a monkey | bhīma vapuḥ: having a terrific body | amita vikramaḥ: and a boundless prowess | tiṣṭhati: is stationed | aśokavana madhye: in the middle of Ashoka grove | kṛta samvādaḥ: and made a conversation | sītayā: with Seetha. |

TRANSLATION

"O king! A monkey having a terrific body and a boundless prowess, is stationed in the middle of Ashoka grove and made a conversation with Seetha."

VERSE 14

न च तम् जानकी सीता हरिम् हरिण लोचणा
अस्माभिः बहुधा पृष्टा निवेदयितुम् इच्छति

na ca tam jānakī sītā harim hariṇa locaṇā
asmābhiḥ bahudhā pṛṣṭā nivedayitum icchati

SYNONYMS

pṛṣṭā: (Eventhough) questioned | bahudhā: in many ways | asmābhiḥ: by us | sītā: Seetha | jānakī: the daughter of Janaka | hariṇalocanā: having eyes similar to those of a doe | na icchati: is not inclined | nivedayitum: to tell | harim: about the monkey. |

TRANSLATION

"Eventhough questioned in many ways by us, Seetha, the daughter of Janaka, having eyes similar to those of a doe, is not inclined to tell about the monkey."

VERSE 15

वासवस्य भवेत् दूतो दूतो वैश्रवणस्य वा
प्रेषितो वा अपि रामेण सीता अन्वेषण कान्क्षया

vāsavasya bhavet dūto dūto vaiśravaṇasya vā
preṣito vā api rāmeṇa sītā anveṣaṇa kānkṣayā

SYNONYMS

bhavet: He may be | dūtaḥ: a messenger | vāsavasya: of Indra the Lord of celestials | dūto vā: or the messenger | vaiśravaṇasya: of Kubera the king of riches | preṣitovāpi: or even a messenger sent | rāmeṇa: by Rama | sītānveṣaṇa kān^kṣayā: desirous of searching for Seetha. |

TRANSLATION

"He may be a messenger of Indra the Lord of celestials, or the messenger of Kubera the king of riches or even a messenger sent by Rama to search for Seetha."

VERSE 16

तेन त्वत् भूत रूपेण यत् तत् तव मनो हरम्
नाना मृग गण आकीर्णम् प्रमृष्टम् प्रमदा वनम्

tena tvat bhūta rūpeṇa yat tat tava mano haram
nānā mṛga gaṇa ākīrṇam pramṛṣṭam pramadā vanam

SYNONYMS

tena: by him | adbhuta rūpeṇa: having a wonderful form | tava: your | pramadāvanam: grove attached to the gynaecium | yat: which is | manoharam: charming | nānā mṛga gaṇākīrṇam: and extensive with many kinds of troops of animals | pramṛṣṭam: has been wiped off. |

TRANSLATION

"He, having a wonderful form, has wiped off your grove, attached to the gynaecium, which is fascinating and extending with many kinds of animal-flock."

VERSE 17

न तत्र कश्चित् उद्देशो यः तेन न विनाशितः
यत्र सा जानकी सीता स तेन न विनाशितः

na tatra kaścit uddeśo yaḥ tena na vināśitaḥ
yatra sā jānakī sītā sa tena na vināśitaḥ

SYNONYMS

na kaścit uddeśaḥ: there is no place what so ever | tatra: there | yaḥ: which | na vināśitaḥ: was not destroyed | tena: by him. | sah: (only) that place | yatra: where | sītā: Seetha | jānakī: the daughter of Janka |

TRANSLATION

"There is no place whatsoever in that grove, which was not destroyed by him. Only that place, where Seetha the daughter of Janaka was sitting, was not destroyed by him."

VERSE 18

जानकी रक्षण अर्थम् वा श्रमात् वा न उपलभ्यते
अथवा कः श्रमः तस्य सा एव तेन अभिरक्षिता

jānakī rakṣaṇa artham vā śramāt vā na upalabhyate
athavā kaḥ śramaḥ tasya sā eva tena abhirakṣitā

SYNONYMS

nopalabhyate: It is not known | jānakīrakṣaṇārtham vā: whether to protect Seetha | śramadvā: or because of fatigue | athavā: or else | kaḥ: what | śramaḥ: fatigue (is there) | tasya: for him? | saiva: she alone was | abhirakṣitā: was protected tena = by him. |

TRANSLATION

"It is not known whether to protect Seetha or because of fatigue, he has left that place undestroyed, or else, what fatigue is there for him? He has done it to protect Seetha."

VERSE 19

चारु पल्लव पत्र आढ्यम् यम् सीता स्वयम् आस्थिता
प्रवृद्धः शिंशपा वृक्षः स च तेन अभिरक्षितः

cāru pallava patra āḍhyam yam sītā svayam āsthitā
pravṛddhaḥ śiṃśapā vṛkṣaḥ sa ca tena abhirakṣitaḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that | pravṛddhaḥ: well-grown | śimśupā vṛkṣaḥ: Simsupa tree | carupallava puṣpāḍhyam: abounding in charming sprouts and flowers | yam: (under) which | sītā: Seetha | svayam: herself | āsthitā: took shelter | abhirakṣitaḥ: has been spared | tena: by him. |

TRANSLATION

"That well-grown Simsupa tree, abounding in charming sprouts and flowers, under which Seetha herself took shelter, has been spared by him."

VERSE 20

तस्य उग्र रूपस्य उग्रम् त्वम् दण्डम् आज्ञातुम् अर्हसि
सीता सम्भाषिता येन तत् वनम् च विनाशितम्

tasya ugra rūpasya ugram tvam daṇḍam ājñātum arhasi
sītā sambhāṣitā yena tat vanam ca vināśitam

SYNONYMS

tasya ugrarūpasya: to that terribly looking monkey | yena: by whom | sītā: Seetha | sambhāṣitā: was spoken to | tatvanam ca: and that grove | tvam: you | ājñātum: to order | ugram: a terrible | daṅḍam: punishment. |

TRANSLATION

To that terribly looking monkey by whom Seetha was spoken to and that grove destroyed you to order a terrible punishment.

VERSE 21

मनः परिगृहीताम् ताम् तव रक्षो गण ईश्वर
कः सीताम् अभिभाषेत यो न स्यात् त्यक्त जीवितः

manaḥ parigṛhītām tām tava rakṣo gaṇa īśvara
kaḥ sītām abhibhāṣeta yo na syāt tyakta jīvitaḥ

SYNONYMS

rakṣogaṇeśvara: O chief of the demon-troops! | kaḥ: who | abhibhāṣata: (would dare) to talk | tām sītām: to that Seetha | tava manaḥ parigṛhītām: who has been mentally accepted by you | nasyāt: not perhaps | yaḥ: he who | tyaktajīvitaḥ: is ready to abandon his life. |

TRANSLATION

"O chief of the demons-troops! Who would dare to talk to that Seetha, who has been mentally accepted by you, except perhaps he who is ready to abandon his life?"

VERSE 22

राक्षसीनाम् वचः श्रुत्वा रावणो राक्षस ईश्वरः
हुत अगिः इव जज्वाल कोप सम्वर्तित ईक्षणः

rākṣasīnām vacaḥ śrutvā rāvaṇo rākṣasa īśvaraḥ
huta agiḥ iva jajvāla kopa samvartita īkṣaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | vacaḥ: words | rākṣasīnām: of the female-demons | rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | rākṣaseśvaraḥ: the lord of demons | jajvāla: flared up | hutāgniriva: like a funeral fire | kopa samvartitekṣaṇaḥ: his eyes spinning through anger. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of the female-demons, Ravana the lord of demons flared up like a funeral fire, his eyes spinning with anger.

VERSE 23

तस्य क्रुद्धस्य नेत्राभ्याम् प्रापतन्नस्रबिन्दवः
दीप्ताभ्यामिव जज्वाल कोपसंवर्तितेक्षणः

tasya kruddhasya netrābhyām prāpatannasrabindavaḥ
dīptābhyāmiva jajvāla kopasaṃvartitekṣaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

tasya kruddhasya netrāṇām: from his enraged eyes | asrabindavaḥ: tears | prāpatan: dropped | snehabindavaḥ: like drops of oil | sārciṣaḥ dīpābhyām: dripping from resplendent lamps. |

TRANSLATION

Tears dropped from Ravana's enraged eyes, like drops of oil dripping from resplendent lamps.

VERSE 24

आत्मनः सदृशान् शूरान् किम्करान् नाम राक्षसान्
व्यादिदेश महातेजा निग्रह अर्थम् हनूमतः

ātmanaḥ sadṛśān śūrān kimkarān nāma rākṣasān
vyādideśa mahātejā nigraha artham hanūmataḥ

SYNONYMS

mahātejāḥ: Ravana with a great splendour | vyādideśa: ordered (for sending) | śūrān rākṣasān: valiant demons | ātmaḥ sadṛśān: equal to him | kinkarānnāma: called Kinkaras | nigrahārtham: in order to catch hold | hanumataḥ: of Hanuma. |

TRANSLATION

Ravana, with a great splendour, sent demons with a valiance equal to him, called Kinkaras, in order to catch hold of Hanuma.

VERSE 25

तेषाम् अशीति साहस्रम् किम्कराणाम् तरस्विनाम्
निर्ययुः भवनात् तस्मात् कूट मुद्गर पाणयः

teṣām aśīti sāhasram kimkarāṇām tarasvinām
niryayuḥ bhavanāt tasmāt kūṭa mudgara pāṇayaḥ

SYNONYMS

aśītisāhasram: eighty thousand | teṣām kinkarāṇām: of those Kinkaras | tarassvinām: who were strong | sarve: all tose Kinkaras | mahodarāḥ: with large bellies | mahādamṣṭrāḥ: long tusks | ghora rūpāḥ: and having terrible forms | mahābalāḥ: and ones with great strength | yuddhābhimanasaḥ: longing to fright | kūṭamudgara pāṇayaḥ: with iron mallets and paaNayaH = with iron mallets and clubs in hand | hanumadgrahaṇodyatāḥ: eager to lay hold on Hanuma | niryayuḥ: started tasmaat bhavanaat = niryayuH = started | tasmāt bhavanāt: from that palace. |

TRANSLATION

He ordered for eighty thousand of those Kinkaras who were strong. All those mighty Kinkaras with their large bellies, long tusks and terrible forms, longing to fight with iron mallets and clubs in hand, in eagerness to lay hold on Hanuma, started from that place.

VERSE 27

ते कपिम् तम् समासाद्य तोरणस्थम् अवस्थितम्
अभिपेतुः महावेगाः पतन्गा इव पावकम्

te kapim tam samāsādya toraṇastham avasthitam
abhipetuḥ mahāvegāḥ patangā iva pāvakam

SYNONYMS

samāsādya: approaching | kapīndram: Hanuma | avasthitam: who was standing near | toraṇastham: the arched doorway | te: they | abhipetuḥ: rushed towards (him) | mahāvegāḥ: with a great speed | pataṅgāḥ iva: like locusts | pāvakam: (rushing towards) fire. |

TRANSLATION

Approaching Hanuma who was standing near the arched doorway, they rushed towards him with a great speed, like locusts rushing towards a fire.

VERSE 28

ते गदाभिः विचित्राभिः परिघैः कान्चन अन्गदैः
आजघ्नुः वानर श्रेष्ठम् शरैः आदित्य सम्निभैः

te gadābhiḥ vicitrābhiḥ parighaiḥ kāncana angadaiḥ
ājaghnuḥ vānara śreṣṭham śaraiḥ āditya samnibhaiḥ

SYNONYMS

te: they | ajaghnaḥ: banged | vānaraśreśṭham: Hanuma | gadāḥ: with various kinds of maces | parighaiḥ: with iron bludgeons | kāṅcanāṇgadaiḥ: plated with gold | śaraiśca: and with arrows | āditya samnibhaiḥ: shining like the sun. |

TRANSLATION

They banged Hanuma with various kinds of maces, iron bludgeons plated with gold and arrows shining like the sun.

VERSE 29

मुद्गरैः पट्टिसैः शूलैः प्रासतोमरशक्तिभिः
परिवार्य हनूमन्तं सहसा तस्थुरग्रतः

mudgaraiḥ paṭṭisaiḥ śūlaiḥ prāsatomaraśaktibhiḥ
parivārya hanūmantaṃ sahasā tasthuragrataḥ

SYNONYMS

sahasā: quickly | parivārya: surrounding hanumantam = Hanuma | mudgaraiḥ: with clubs | paṭṭisaiḥ: sharp edged spears | śūlaiḥ: iron pikes | prāsatomara śaktibhiḥ: lances | tasthuḥ: stood | agrataḥ: in front of him. |

TRANSLATION

Quickly surrounding Hanuma with clubs, sharp edged spears, iron pikes, lances, javelins and swords, they stood in front of him.

VERSE 30

हनूमान् अपि तेजस्वी श्रीमान् पर्वत सम्निभः
क्षिताव् आविध्य लान्गूलम् ननाद च महास्वनम्

hanūmān api tejasvī śrīmān parvata samnibhaḥ
kṣitāv āvidhya lāngūlam nanāda ca mahāsvanam

SYNONYMS

hanumānapi: Hanuma too | tejasvī: with his great splendour | śrīmān: illustriousness | parvatasannibhaḥ: and looking like a mountain | āvidhya: hurling | lāṇgūlam: his tail | kṣitau: on the ground | mahāsvanam: creating a thunderous noise. |

TRANSLATION

The highly splendorous and illustrious Hanuma too, looking like a mountain, hurled his tail on the ground, making a thunderous noise.

VERSE 31

स भूत्वा सुमहाकायो हनुमान् मारुतात्मजः
धृष्टमास्फोटयामास लङ्काम् शब्देन पूरयन्

sa bhūtvā sumahākāyo hanumān mārutātmajaḥ
dhṛṣṭamāsphoṭayāmāsa laṅkām śabdena pūrayan

SYNONYMS

saḥ hanumān: that Hanuma | mārutātmajaḥ: the son of wind-god | bhūtvā: becoming | sumahākāyaḥ: one with a very big body | āsphoṭayāmāsa: clapped on his arms | dhṛṣṭam: boldly | pūrayan: filling | laṅkām: Lanka | śabdena: with that sound. |

TRANSLATION

The highly splendourous and illustrious Hanuma too, looking like a mountain, hurled his tail on the ground, making a thunderous noise.

VERSE 32

तस्यस्फोटितशब्देन महता सानुनादिना
पेतुर्विहङ्गा गगनादुच्चैश्चेदमघोयत्

tasyasphoṭitaśabdena mahatā sānunādinā
peturvihaṅgā gaganāduccaiścedamaghoyat

SYNONYMS

tasya asphoṭita śabdena mahatā: by that great sound made by Hanuma | sānunādinā: together with a resound | vihaṇgāḥ: birds | petuḥ: fell down | gaganāt: from the sky | āghoṣayat ca: (He) also cried aloud | idam: this here | uccaiḥ: with a clamorous voice (as follows). |

TRANSLATION

By that great sound made by Hanuma through clapping on his arms together with a resound, birds fell down from the sky. Hanuma also then cried aloud with a clamorous voice (as follows):

VERSE 33

जयत्यतिबलो रामो लक्ष्मणश्च महाबलः
राजा जयति सुग्रीवो राघवेणाभिपालितः

jayatyatibalo rāmo lakṣmaṇaśca mahābalaḥ
rājā jayati sugrīvo rāghaveṇābhipālitaḥ

SYNONYMS

jayati: long live | rāmaḥ: Rama | atibalah: the mighty | mahābalaḥ: and the powerful | lakṣmaṇaśca: Lakshmana too jayati = long live | rājā: the king | sugrīvaḥ: Sugreeva | anupālitaḥ: protected | rāghavena: by Rama. |

TRANSLATION

"Long live the mighty Rama and the powerful Lakshmana! Long live the King Sugreeva, protected by Rama!"

VERSE 34

दासो।अहम् कोसलेन्द्रस्य रामस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः
हनुमान् शत्रुसैन्यानाम् निहन्ता मारुतात्मजः

dāso|aham kosalendrasya rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ
hanumān śatrusainyānām nihantā mārutātmajaḥ

SYNONYMS

aham: I | hanumān: am Hanuma | nihantā: the killer | śatrusainyānām: of army of adversaries | mārutātmajah: and the son of wind-god | dāsaḥ: am the servant | rāmasya: of Rama | kosalendrasya: the king of Kosala kingdom | akliṣṭa karmaṇaḥ: who is unwearied in action. |

TRANSLATION

"I am Hanuma, the destroyer of the army of adversaries and the son of wind-god. I am the servant of Rama, the king of Kosala Kingdom, who is unwearied in action."

VERSE 35

न रावणसहस्रम् मे युद्धे प्रतिबलं भवेत्
शिलाभिस्तु प्रहरतः पादपैश्च सहस्रशः

na rāvaṇasahasram me yuddhe pratibalaṃ bhavet
śilābhistu praharataḥ pādapaiśca sahasraśaḥ

SYNONYMS

me: to me | praharataḥ: who is striking | sahasraśaḥ: with thousands of | śilābhiḥ: rocks | pādapaiśca: and trees | yuddhe: in battle | rāvaṇa sahasram: even a thousand of Ravanas | na bhavet: will not be | pratibalam: matching equally (with me). |

TRANSLATION

"Even a thousand of Ravanas will not be matching equally with me, who is capable of striking with thousands of rocks and trees in battle."

VERSE 36

अर्दयित्वा पुरीम् लङ्कामभिवाद्य च मैथिलीम्
समृद्धार्थो गमिष्यामि मिषताम् सर्वरक्षसाम्

ardayitvā purīm laṅkāmabhivādya ca maithilīm
samṛddhārtho gamiṣyāmi miṣatām sarvarakṣasām

SYNONYMS

miṣatām: before the eyes of | sarva rakṣasām: all the demons | ardayitvā: annihilating | laṅkām purrim: the city of Lanka | abhivādya ca: and offering salutation | maithilīm: Seetha | gamiṣyāmi: I will go back | samṛddhārthaḥ: after having accomplished my task. |

TRANSLATION

"Here, before the eyes of all the demons, I will annihilate the City of Lanka and after offering salutation to Seetha, I will go back after fully completing my task."

VERSE 37

तस्य सन्नाद शब्देन ते अभवन् भय शन्किताः
ददृशुः च हनूमन्तम् संध्या मेघम् इव उन्नतम्

tasya sannāda śabdena te abhavan bhaya śankitāḥ
dadṛśuḥ ca hanūmantam saṃdhyā megham iva unnatam

SYNONYMS

te: they | abhavan: became | bhayaśaṇkitāḥ: mistrustful with fear | tasya samāda śabdena: by his clamorous voice cried aloud | dadṛśuśca: and saw | hanūmantam: Hanuma | unnatam: who was a s high | sandhyāmeghamiva: as a twilight rain-cloud. |

TRANSLATION

Those demons became frightened by the clamorous voice of Hanuma cried aloud and saw him to be as high as a twilight rain-cloud.

VERSE 38

स्वामि संदेश निह्शन्काः ततः ते राक्षसाः कपिम्
चित्रैः प्रहरणैः भीमैः अभिपेतुः ततः ततः

svāmi saṃdeśa nihśankāḥ tataḥ te rākṣasāḥ kapim
citraiḥ praharaṇaiḥ bhīmaiḥ abhipetuḥ tataḥ tataḥ

SYNONYMS

svāmi sandeśa niḥ śaṅkāḥ: not feeling apprehended because of the command by their king | te: those | rākṣasāḥ: demons | tataḥ: thereafter | abhipetuḥ: rushed towards | kaprim: Hanuma | bhimaiḥ: with terrific | citraiḥ: and amazing | praharaṇaiḥ: weapons. |

TRANSLATION

Not feeling apprehended because of the orders of their king, those demons thereafter rushed towards Hanuma, with their terrific and amazing weapons.

VERSE 39

स तैः परिवृतः शूरैः सर्वतः स महाबलः
आससाद आयसम् भीमम् परिघम् तोरण आश्रितम्

sa taiḥ parivṛtaḥ śūraiḥ sarvataḥ sa mahābalaḥ
āsasāda āyasam bhīmam parigham toraṇa āśritam

SYNONYMS

pari vṛtaḥ: surrounded | sarvataḥ: on all sides | taiḥ: by those demons | śūraiḥ: who were valiant | saḥ: that Hanuma | samahābalaḥ: endowed with a great strength | āsasāda: seized | bhīmam: a huge | āyasam parigham: iron bar | toraṇāśrittam: belong to the arched gate. |

TRANSLATION

Surrounded on all sides by those strong demons, that Hanuma endowed with a great strength seized a huge iron bar belonging to the arched gate.

VERSE 40

स तम् परिघम् आदाय जघान रजनी चरान्
स पन्नगम् इव आदाय स्फुरन्तम् विनता सुतः

sa tam parigham ādāya jaghāna rajanī carān
sa pannagam iva ādāya sphurantam vinatā sutaḥ

SYNONYMS

ādāya: taking | tam parigham: that iron rod | saḥ: that Hanuma | jaghāna: killed | rajanīcarān: demons | saḥ vīraḥ mārutiḥ: that valiant Hanuma | vicacāra: strolled | ambare: in the sky | parigṛhya: taking (that iron rod in hand) | sphurantam vinatāsutaḥ iva: as a moving Garuda the eagle | pannagam: a serpent (in its claws). |

TRANSLATION

Taking that iron rod, Hanuma killed the demons. That violent Hanuma strolled in the sky, taking that iron rod in his hand, as Garuda the eagle would carrying a serpent in its claws.

VERSE 41

स हत्वा राक्षसान् वीरः किम्करान् मारुत आत्मजः

sa hatvā rākṣasān vīraḥ kimkarān māruta ātmajaḥ

SYNONYMS

hatvā: killing | vīrān rākṣasān: the valiant demons | kimkarān: called Kinkaras | saḥ vīraḥ mārutātmajaḥ: that Hanuma | yuddhākāṅkṣī: wishing fight | punaḥ: again | samupāśritaḥ: resorted to | toraṇam: the archy gate-way. |

TRANSLATION

Killing the valiant demons called Kinkaras, that heroic Hanuma wishing to fight again, arrived at the archy gate way.

VERSE 42

ततः तस्मात् भयान् मुक्ताः कतिचित् तत्र राक्षसाः

tataḥ tasmāt bhayān muktāḥ katicit tatra rākṣasāḥ

SYNONYMS

tatḥ: then | katicit: some | rākṣasāḥ: demons | muktāḥ: who was released (escaped) | tasmāt bhayāt: from that horror | tatra: there | nyavedayan: informed | rāvaṇāya: Ravana | sarvān: (that) all | kimkarān: Kinkaras | nihatān: have been killed. |

TRANSLATION

Some demons, who somehow escaped from that terror, went to Ravana and informed him that all the Kinkaras have been killed.

VERSE 43

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे द्विचत्वारिंशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye sundarakāṇḍe dvicatvāriṃśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

niśamya: hearing | mahat balam: of large army | rākṣasānām: of demons | nihatam: having been killed | saḥ: that | rājā: Ravana parivR^itta lochanah = with his eyes rolling rapidly (in anger) | samādideśa: ordered | prahastaputram: Jambumali | apratimam: who was unequal | parākrame: in prowess | sudurjayam: and admirably unconquerable | samare: in battle. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing of large army of demons having been killed, that Ravana with his eyes rolling rapidly (with anger), ordered Jambumali, son of Prahasta, who was unequal in prowess and admirably unconquerable in battle.
