VERSE 1

एवम् बहु विधाम् चिन्ताम् चिन्तयित्व महाकपिः
संश्रवे मधुरम् वाक्यम् वैदेह्या व्याजहार

evam bahu vidhām cintām cintayitva mahākapiḥ
saṃśrave madhuram vākyam vaidehyā vyājahāra
ha

SYNONYMS

cintayitvā: thinking | evam: thus | bahuvidhām: many kinds of | cintām: thought | mahākapiḥ: Hanuman | vyājahāraḥ: spoke (the following) madhuram = sweet | vākyām: words | samśrave: within the hearing | vaidehyāḥ: of Seetha. |

TRANSLATION

Thus reflecting on many kinds of thought, Hanuma spoke the following sweet words within the hearing range of Seetha.

VERSE 2

राजा दशरथो नाम रथ कुन्जर वाजिनाम्
पुण्य शीलो महाकीर्तिः ऋजुः आसीन् महायशाः

rājā daśaratho nāma ratha kunjara vājinām
puṇya śīlo mahākīrtiḥ ṛjuḥ āsīn mahāyaśāḥ

SYNONYMS

rājā: (There was) a king | daśarathe nāma: named Dasaratha | mahāyaśāḥ: who was very glorious | ikṣvākūṇām: among kings belonging to Ikshvaku dynasty | puṇya śīlaḥ: and had virtuous disposition | ratha kuṅjara vājimān: he owned chariots | elephants: and horses | mahā kīrtiḥ: and was very famous. |

TRANSLATION

"There was a king named Dasaratha who was very glorious among the kings of Ikshvaku dynasty and had a virtuous disposition. He owned chariots, elephants and horses, becoming very famous.

VERSE 3

राजर्षीणां गुणश्रेष्ठस्तपसा चर्षिभिः समः
चक्र वर्ति कुले जातः पुरम् दर समो
बले

rājarṣīṇāṃ guṇaśreṣṭhastapasā carṣibhiḥ samaḥ
cakra varti kule jātaḥ puram dara samo
bale

SYNONYMS

(ḥe vas) guṇaśreṣṭhaḥ: excellent in virtues | rājarṣīṇām: among royal sages | samaḥ: equal to | ṛṣibhiḥ: the (seven) sages | tapasā: in austerity | jātaḥ: born | cakravarti kule: in the lineage of emperors | purandara samaḥ: and was equivalent to Indra | bale: in prowess. |

TRANSLATION

"He was excellent in virtues among royal sages. He was equal to the seven sages in austerity. He was born in the lineage of emperors and was equivalent to Indra in prowess."

VERSE 4

अहिंसा रतिः अक्षुद्रो घृणी सत्य पराक्रमः
मुख्यः च इक्ष्वाकु वंशस्य लक्ष्मीवाम्ल् लक्ष्मि
वर्धनः

ahiṃsā ratiḥ akṣudro ghṛṇī satya parākramaḥ
mukhyaḥ ca ikṣvāku vaṃśasya lakṣmīvāml lakṣmi
vardhanaḥ

SYNONYMS

(ḥe vas) ahinsā ratiḥ: fond of harmlessness | akṣudraḥ: not vulgar | ghṛṇī: compassionate | satya parākramaḥ: truly mighty | mukhyaśca: eminent | ikṣvāku vamśaśca: in Ikshvaku race | lakṣmīvān: endowed of prosperity | lakṣmivardhanah: and causing to increase prosperity. |

TRANSLATION

"He was keen on harmlessness. He was not vulgar. He was compassionate. He was truly mighty. He was an eminent king in Ikshvaku race. He was endowed with prosperity and was causing to increase prosperity."

VERSE 5

पार्थिव व्यञ्जनैः युक्तः पृथु श्रीः पार्थिव ऋषभः
पृथिव्याम् चतुः अन्तयाम् विश्रुतः
सुखदः सुखी

pārthiva vyañjanaiḥ yuktaḥ pṛthu śrīḥ pārthiva ṛṣabhaḥ
pṛthivyām catuḥ antayām viśrutaḥ
sukhadaḥ sukhī

SYNONYMS

(ḥe vas) yuktaḥ: endowed | pārthiva vyaṇjanaiḥ: with royal characteristics | pṛthuśrī: was highly prosperous | pārthivarṣabhaḥ: excellent among kings | viśrutaḥ: famous | pṛthivyām: on earth | caturantāyām: with four borders | sukhadaḥ: gave happiness | sukhī: and was happy himself. |

TRANSLATION

"The king Dasaratha was endowed with royal characteristics, highly prosperous, excellent among kings and highly prosperous, excellent among kings and famous on earth with its four borders. He was happy man and gave happiness to others."

VERSE 6

तस्य पुत्रः प्रियो ज्येष्ठः तारा अधिप निभ आननः
रामो नाम विशेषज्ञः श्रेष्ठः सर्व
धनुष्मताम्

tasya putraḥ priyo jyeṣṭhaḥ tārā adhipa nibha ānanaḥ
rāmo nāma viśeṣajñaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ sarva
dhanuṣmatām

SYNONYMS

tasya: to that Dasaratha | jyeṣṭha putraḥ: (there was) an eldest son | rāmo nāma: named Rama priyaH = who was beloved | tārādhipa nibhānanaḥ: having a face like a moon | viśeṣañaḥ: knowing distinctions (in humans and others) | śreṣṭhaḥ: and excellent | sarvadhanuṣmatām: among all the wielders of the bow. |

TRANSLATION

"There was an eldest son named Rama to that Dasaratha. Rama was beloved having a moon-like face. He, knows the distinctions among humans and others. He was excellent among all the wielders of the bow."

VERSE 7

रक्षिता स्वस्य वृत्तस्य स्व जनस्य अपि रक्षिता
रक्षिता जीव लोकस्य धर्मस्य च परम्
तपः

rakṣitā svasya vṛttasya sva janasya api rakṣitā
rakṣitā jīva lokasya dharmasya ca param
tapaḥ

SYNONYMS

paramtapaḥ: (that Rama) who torments the enemies | rakṣitā: and a protector | svasya: his own | vṛttasya: mode of life | svajanasya: of his own people | jīva lokasya: of every living being | dharmatyaca: of righteousness. |

TRANSLATION

"That Rama who annihilates enemies, is a protector of his own mode of life, a protector of his own people, a protector of every living being and a protector of righteousness."

VERSE 8

तस्य सत्य अभिसंधस्य वृद्धस्य वचनात् पितुः
सभार्यः सह च भ्रात्रा वीरः प्रव्रजितो
वनम्

tasya satya abhisaṃdhasya vṛddhasya vacanāt pituḥ
sabhāryaḥ saha ca bhrātrā vīraḥ pravrajito
vanam

SYNONYMS

vacanāt: by the words | tasya: of that Dasaratha | vṛddhesayā: his old | pituḥ: father | satyābhisandhasya: a true speaking man | vīraḥ: that Rama | pravrājitaḥ: went on exile | vanam: to a forest | sa bhāryaḥ: along with his wife | sahaca bhrātrā: and together with his brother. |

TRANSLATION

"By the command of that Dasaratha, his old father and true-speaking man, that Rama a brave man went on exile to a forest along with his wife and brother."

VERSE 9

तेन तत्र महाअरण्ये मृगयाम् परिधावता
राक्षसा निहताः शूरा बहवः कामरूपिणः

tena tatra mahāaraṇye mṛgayām paridhāvatā
rākṣasā nihatāḥ śūrā bahavaḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

paridhāvatā mṛgayām: while hunting | tatra mahāraṇye: in that great forest | baharaḥ: many | rākṣasāḥ: demons | śūrāḥ: who were valiant | kāma rūpiṇaḥ: and who could assume any form at will | nihatāḥ: were killed | tena: by that Rama. |

TRANSLATION

"While hunting in that forest, that Rama killed many demons who were valiant and who could assume any form at will."

VERSE 10

जन स्थान वधम् श्रुत्वा हतौ च खर दूषणौ
ततः तु अमर्ष अपहृता जानकी रावणेन
तु

jana sthāna vadham śrutvā hatau ca khara dūṣaṇau
tataḥ tu amarṣa apahṛtā jānakī rāvaṇena
tu

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | śrutvā: hearing | jana sthāna vadham: about the killing of demons in Janasthana a part of Dandaka forest | khara dūṣaṇau ca: Khara and Dushana the demons | hatau: having been killed | jānakī: Seetha | amarṣāpahṛtā: was taken away with anger | rāvaṇena: by Ravana | vaṇcayitvā: by deceiving | mṛga rupeṇa: in the guise of a deer | rāman: Rama | vane: in the forest | māyayā: and by creating illusion. |

TRANSLATION

"Thereafter, hearing about the killing of demons in Janasthana, a part of Dandaka forest, in addition to killing of Khara and Dushana the demons, the enraged Ravana took away, Seetha, by deceiving Rama in creating an illusive image of deer in the forest."

VERSE 11

स मार्गमाणस्ताम् देवीम् रामः सीतामन्न्दिताम्

sa mārgamāṇastām devīm rāmaḥ sītāmannditām

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | saḥ rāmaḥ: that Rama parapuramjayaH = the conqueror of enemys cities | mahābalaḥ: and a very stron man | hatvā: having killed | vālinam: Vali | prāyacchat: gave away | tat: that | kapirājyam: kingdom of monkeys | sugrīvasya: to Sugreeva. |

TRANSLATION

"Searching for Seetha the irreproachable lady, that Rama met a monkey called Sugreeva as his friend in the forest."

VERSE 12

ततः स वालिनम् ह्त्वा रामः परपुरम्जयः

tataḥ sa vālinam htvā rāmaḥ parapuramjayaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | saḥ rāmaḥ: that Rama | parapuramjayaḥ: the conqueror of enemy's cities | mahābalaḥ: and a very strong man | hatvā: having killed | vālinam: Vali | prāyacchat: gave away | tat: that | kapirājyam: kingdom of monkeys | sugrīvasya: to Sugreeva. |

TRANSLATION

"Thereafter, Rama the conqueror of enemy's cities and very strong man, killed Vali and gave away that kingdom of monkeys to Sugreeva."

VERSE 13

सुग्रीवेणापि संदिष्टा हरयः कामरूपिणः

sugrīveṇāpi saṃdiṣṭā harayaḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

samdiṣṭāḥ: sent | sugrīveṇa: by Sugreeva | sahasraśaḥ: thousands of | harayaḥ: monkeys | kāmarūpiṇaḥ: capable of assuming any form at their will | vicinvanti: are searching | tām devīm: that lady | sarvāsu dikṣu: in all quarters. |

TRANSLATION

"As commanded and sent by Sugreeva, thousands of monkeys capable of assuming form at their will, are searching for that lady Seetha in all quarters of the earth."

VERSE 14

अहम् सम्पातिवचनाच्छतयोजनमायतम्

aham sampātivacanācchatayojanamāyatam

SYNONYMS

sampāti vacanāt: by the words of Sampati | aham: I | vegavān: a swift monkey | plutaḥ: crossed | sāgaram: the ocean | āyatam: having a length | śata yojanam: of one hundred Yojanas | asyāḥ viśalākṣyāḥ hetoḥ: for the sake of this broad eyed Seetha. |

TRANSLATION

"By the words of Sampati, I a swift monkey crossed the ocean having a length of one hundred yojanas for the sake of this broad eyed Seetha."

VERSE 15

यथा रूपाम् यथा वर्णाम् यथा लक्ष्मीम् विनिश्चिताम्

yathā rūpām yathā varṇām yathā lakṣmīm viniścitām

SYNONYMS

iyam: this Seetha | asāditā: has been found | mayā: by me | yathā rūpām: according to the comeliness | yathā varṇām: according to the complexion | yathā lakṣmavatīmca: and according to the bodily marks | : the same | aham: I | tām: that Seetha | rāghavasya: from Rama. |

TRANSLATION

"This Seetha has been found by me according to the same comeliness, complexion and the bodily marks as I had heard from Rama."

VERSE 16

विरराम एवम् उक्त्वा असौ वाचम् वानर पुम्गवः

virarāma evam uktvā asau vācam vānara pumgavaḥ

SYNONYMS

uktvā: speaking | vācam: the words | evam: thus | asau: that | vānarapuṇgavaḥ: Hanuma | virarāma: kept quiet | śrutvā: hearing | tat: those words | jānakīca api: Seetha also | āgatā: got | param: a great | vismayam: surprise. |

TRANSLATION

Having spoken these words, Hanuma kept quiet. Hearing those words, Seetha too got a great surprise.

VERSE 17

ततः सा वक्र केश अन्ता सुकेशी केश सम्वृतम्

tataḥ sā vakra keśa antā sukeśī keśa samvṛtam

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | : that Seetha | kleśa samvṛta cetanā: whose conciousness was enshrouded by affliction | vakra keśāntā: whose hair-ends were curved | bhīruḥ: and who was of fearful nature | unnamya: lifted | vadanam: her face | aikṣata: and looked towards | śimsupāvṛkṣam: shimshupa tree. |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, that Seetha whose consciousness was enshrouded by affliction, whose hair-ends were curved and who was of a fearful nature, lifted her face and looked towards Shimshupa tree.

VERSE 18

निशम्य सीता वचनम् कपेश्च
दिशश्च सर्वाः प्रदिशश्च वीक्ष्य
स्वयम् प्रहर्षं परमं
जगाम
सर्वात्मना राममनुस्मरन्ती

niśamya sītā vacanam kapeśca
diśaśca sarvāḥ pradiśaśca vīkṣya
svayam praharṣaṃ paramaṃ
jagāma
sarvātmanā rāmamanusmarantī

SYNONYMS

niśamya: heaving | kapaḥ: Hanuma's | vacanam: words | vīkṣya: and seeing | sarvāḥ: all | diśaśca: quarters | pradiśaśca: and sub-quarters | sītā: Seetha | anusmarantī: was recollecting | rāmam: Rama | sarvātmanā: in all ways | jagāma: and obtained | paramam: a great | praharṣam: joy. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing Hanuma's words and looking at all quarters and sub-quarters, Seetha was recollecting Rama in all ways and obtained a great joy.

VERSE 19

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे एकत्रिंशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye sundarakāṇḍe ekatriṃśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

nirīkṣamāṇā: looking at | tiryak: sides | ūrdhavam ca: up | tathāpi: and | adhastāt: down | : that Seetha | dadarśa: saw | vātātmajam: that Hanuman | acintya buddhim: having an unimaginable intelligence | amātyam: the minister | piṇgādhipate: of Sugreeva | sūryamiva: resembling the sun | udayastham: behind an eastern mountain. |

TRANSLATION

Looking at sides, up and down, that Seetha saw that Hanuman, the sun of wind-god, having an unimaginable intelligence, the minister of Sugreeva and looking like the sun behind an eastern mountain.
