VERSE 1

स तस्य मध्ये भवनस्य संस्थितम्
महद्विमानम् मणिवज्रचित्रितम्
प्रतप्तजाम्बूनदजालकृत्रिमम्
ददर्श वीरः पवनात्मजः कपिः

sa tasya madhye bhavanasya saṃsthitam
mahadvimānam maṇivajracitritam
prataptajāmbūnadajālakṛtrimam
dadarśa vīraḥ pavanātmajaḥ kapiḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ kapiḥ: that Hanuma | vīraḥ: the courageous one | pavanātmajaḥ: the son of Lord Vayu | dadarśa: saw | mahat vimānam: a great aerial plane | samsthitam: standing | madhye: in the middle | tasya bhavanasya: of that building | maṇivajracitritam: with a surprising hue due to diamonds and gems | prataptajāmbūnadajālakṛtrimam: decorated by series of refined gold. |

TRANSLATION

That Hanuma the courageous one, the son of Lord Vayu, saw the great aerial plane standing in the middle of that building with a surprising hue, due to diamonds, and gems decorated by series of refined gold.

VERSE 2

तदप्रमेयाप्रतिकारकृत्रिमम्
कृतम् स्वयम् साध्विति विश्वकर्मणाः
दिवम् गतम् वायुपथप्रतिष्ठितम्
व्यराजतादित्यपथस्य लक्ष्मिवत्

tadaprameyāpratikārakṛtrimam
kṛtam svayam sādhviti viśvakarmaṇāḥ
divam gatam vāyupathapratiṣṭhitam
vyarājatādityapathasya lakṣmivat

SYNONYMS

tat: that plane | vyarājata: shone | lakśmavat: like symbol | ādityapathasya: for solar path | vāyupathapratiṣṭhatam: standing in the aerial path | divamgatam: obtaining in the sky | kṛtam: manufactured | svyam viśvakarmaṇā: by Vishvakarma himself | sādhviti: and praised by him | aprameyāpratikārakṛtrimam: one without comparison in beauty. |

TRANSLATION

That plane shone like symbol for solar path standing in the aerial path obtaining the sky. Manufactured by Vishvakarma himself and praised by him as one without comparison in beauty.

VERSE 3

न तत्र किंचिन्न कृतम् प्रयत्नतो
न तत्र किंचिन्न महर्हरत्नवत्
न ते विशेषा नियताः सुरेष्वपि
न तत्र किंचिन्न महाविशेषवत्

na tatra kiṃcinna kṛtam prayatnato
na tatra kiṃcinna maharharatnavat
na te viśeṣā niyatāḥ sureṣvapi
na tatra kiṃcinna mahāviśeṣavat

SYNONYMS

tatra: in that | na kimcit na kṛtam: there is not even a small thing that is not made | prayatnataḥ: with effort | na kimcit: there is nothing | na mahārharatnavat: without the best diamonds | te viśeṣāḥ: those characteristics | naniyatāḥ: definitely are not | sureṣvapi: in Devas also | kimcit na: there is nothing | na mahāviśeṣavat: that is not great significance. |

TRANSLATION

In that plane there is not even a small thing that is not made with great effort, in that there is nothing without the best diamonds, those characteristics definitely are not in Devas also, in that there is nothing that is not of great significance.

VERSE 4

तपह्समाधानपराक्रमार्जितम्
मनःसमाधानविचारचारिणम्
अनेकसंस्थानविषेषनिर्मितम्
ततस्ततस्तुल्यविशेषदर्शनम्

tapahsamādhānaparākramārjitam
manaḥsamādhānavicāracāriṇam
anekasaṃsthānaviṣeṣanirmitam
tatastatastulyaviśeṣadarśanam

SYNONYMS

tapḥsamādhānaparākramārjitam: one that has been obtained by austerities and by prowess | manaḥsamādhānavicāracāriṇam: one that moves about by the thoughts of concentrated mind | anekasamsthānaviśeṣanirmitam: made from various significant parts | tulyaviśeṣanadarśanam: with an appearance of parts of equal significance | tataḥ tataḥ: (collected from) here and there |

TRANSLATION

One that has been obtained by austerities and by prowess, one that moves about by thoughts of concentrated mind, made from various significant parts with an appearance of parts of equal significance, collected from here and there from all over the world.

VERSE 5

विशेषमालम्ब्य विशेषसंस्थितम्
विचित्रकूटम् बहुकूटमण्डितम्
मनो।अभिरामम् शरद्न्दुनिर्मलम्
विचित्रकूटम् शिखरम् गिरेर्यथा

viśeṣamālambya viśeṣasaṃsthitam
vicitrakūṭam bahukūṭamaṇḍitam
mano|abhirāmam śaradndunirmalam
vicitrakūṭam śikharam gireryathā

SYNONYMS

ālambya: obtaining | viśeṣam: a special construction | viśeṣasamsthitam: stood as a special object | vicitrakūṭam: with other wonderful small peaks. | bahukūṭamaṇḍitam: adorned by many peaks | mano'bhirāmān: attractive to soul | śaradindunirmalam: calm like an autumnal moon | śikaram yadā: like the peak | gireḥ: of a mountain |

TRANSLATION

Obtaining a special construction as a special object, like a mountain with wonderful peaks adorned by many peaks, attractive to soul, calm like an autumnal moon, like the peak of a mountain with other wonderful small peaks.

VERSE 6

वहन्ति यम् कुण्डशोभितानना
महाशना व्योमचरा निशाचराः
विवृत्तविध्वस्तविशाललोचना
महाजवा भूतगणाः सहस्रशः

vahanti yam kuṇḍaśobhitānanā
mahāśanā vyomacarā niśācarāḥ
vivṛttavidhvastaviśālalocanā
mahājavā bhūtagaṇāḥ sahasraśaḥ

SYNONYMS

(ḥanuma sav that aerial plane) yam: which | niśācarāḥ: rakshasas | mahāśanāḥ: who were great eaters | kunḍalaśobhitānanāḥ: with a face beautified by earrings | vyomacarāḥ: who roamed around in the sky | sahasraśaḥ būtagaṇāḥ: (and) thousands of genii | nivṛttavidhvastaviśālalocanāḥ: with round eyes | mahājavāḥ: capable of great speed | vahanti: carried. |

TRANSLATION

Hanuma saw that aerial plane which rakshasas who were great eaters, with a face beautified by earnings, who roamed around in the sky and thousands of genii with round eyes, crooked eyes and wide eyes capable of great speed carrying it.

VERSE 7

इति वाल्मीकि रामायणे आदि काव्ये सुन्दर काण्डे अष्टमः सर्गः

iti vālmīki rāmāyaṇe ādi kāvye sundara kāṇḍe aṣṭamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that Hanuma | vanaravīrasattamaḥ: the best among Vanara warriors | dadarśa: saw | tatra: there | uttamam vimānam: a best plane | puṣpakam: with the name of Pushpaka | vasantapuṣpotkaracārudarśanam: with a more beautiful appearance than a group of flowers during spring | kāntadarśanam: a more attractive appearance | vasantamāsādapi: than even the spring season. |

TRANSLATION

That Hanuma the best among Vanara warriors saw there a best plane with the name of Pushpaka with a more beautiful appearance than a group of flowers during spring, a more attractive appearance than even the spring season. Thus, this is the 8th chapter in Sundara Kanda of Valmiki Ramayana, the First Epic poem of India.
