VERSE 1

तान् उवाच हरि श्रेष्ठो हनूमान् वानर ऋषभः
अव्यग्र मनसो यूयम् मधु सेवत वानराः

tān uvāca hari śreṣṭho hanūmān vānara ṛṣabhaḥ
avyagra manaso yūyam madhu sevata vānarāḥ

SYNONYMS

hanumān: Hanuma | vānararṣabhaḥ: like a bull among the monkeys | uvāca: spoke | tān: to them (as follows) | vānarāḥ: O monkeys! | yūyam: you | sevata: cherish | madhu: the honey | avyagramanasaḥ: with a cool mind | aham: I | āvārayiṣyāmi: will keep off | yuṣmākam: your | paripanthinaḥ: opposer who is standing in your way. |

TRANSLATION

Hanuma, like a bull among the monkeys and the foremost among them spoke to them as follows: "Cherish the honey with a cool mind, O monkeys! I will keep off your opposer who is standing in your way."

VERSE 2

श्रुत्वा हनुमतो वाक्यम् हरीणाम् प्रवरो अन्गदः

śrutvā hanumato vākyam harīṇām pravaro angadaḥ

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | vākyam: the words | hanumataḥ: of Hanuma | prasannātmā: the gracious minded | aṅgadaḥ: Angada | pratyuvāca: repeated the following words | harayaḥ: (Let) the monkeys | pibantu: drink | madhu: the honey. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Hanuma, the gracious minded Angada the principal among the monkeys repeated the words: "Let the monkeys drink the honey."

VERSE 3

अवश्यम् कृत कार्यस्य वाक्यम् हनुमतो मया

avaśyam kṛta kāryasya vākyam hanumato mayā

SYNONYMS

vākyam: the words | akāryam api: though improper | kṛta kāryasya: who has accomplished his work | avaśyam: certainly | mayā: by me | kim aṅga: wherefore then | īdṛśam punaḥ: moreover |

TRANSLATION

"The words, though improper of Hanuma who had accomplished his task, are to be obliged certainly by me. Wherefore then, moreover, on such an occasion?"

VERSE 4

अन्दगस्य मुखात् श्रुत्वा वचनम् वानर ऋषभाः

andagasya mukhāt śrutvā vacanam vānara ṛṣabhāḥ

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | vacaḥ: the words | mukhāt: coming from the mouth | aṅgadasya: of Angada | vānarāḥ: those monkeys | vānarṣabhāḥ: who were like bulls among the monkeys | samhṛṣṭāḥ: were delighted | pratya pūjayan: and answered with reverence | sādhu sādhv iti: saying 'good |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words coming from the mouth of Angada, those monkeys who were like bulls among the monkeys were delighted and answered with reverence, saying 'good, good!'

VERSE 5

पूजयित्वा अन्गदम् सर्वे वानरा वानर ऋषभम्

pūjayitvā angadam sarve vānarā vānara ṛṣabham

SYNONYMS

pūjayitvā: reverencing | aṅgadam: Angada | vānarā ṛṣabham: the foremost among the monkeys | sarve vānarāḥ: all the monkeys | jagmuḥ: went | yatra: to the place where | madhu vanam: Madhuvana | nadī vegaḥ iva: like rush of a river | drumam: towards a tree. |

TRANSLATION

Reverencing Angada the foremost among the monkeys, all the monkeys rushed towards Madhuvana, the grove abounding in honey, like the rush of a river towards a tree.

VERSE 6

ते प्रहृष्टा मधु वनम् पालान् आक्रम्य वीर्यतः

te prahṛṣṭā madhu vanam pālān ākramya vīryataḥ

SYNONYMS

7| dṛṣṭvā: (because Hanuma) had seen Seetha | śrutvā: and others had heard of her | atisargāca ca: and because of grant of permission from Angada | te sarve paṭavaḥ: all those gifted monkeys | prahṛṣṭāḥ: having entered | madhuvanam: Madhuvana the grove | ākramya pālān: and overpowering themselves over the guards | vīryataḥ: with their prowess | vapuḥ: drank | madhu: the honey | tadā: then | ādaduḥ: took | rasavat phalam: juicy fruits. |

TRANSLATION

Because Hanuma had seen Seetha and others had heard of her and because of the grant of permission from Angada, all those gifted monkeys entered Madhuvana the grove, overpowered the guards with their prowess, drank honey and the partook juicy fruits there.

VERSE 8

उत्पत्य च ततः सर्वे वन पालान् समागताः
ताडयन्ति स्म शतशः सक्तान् मधु वने तदा

utpatya ca tataḥ sarve vana pālān samāgatāḥ
tāḍayanti sma śataśaḥ saktān madhu vane tadā

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | sarve: all those monkeys | utpatya: having jumped | vanapālān: on the guards of the grove | samāgatān: who came | saktān: together | śataśaḥ: in hundreds | tataḥ: and then | tāḍayanti: banged them. |

TRANSLATION

Then, all those monkeys jumped on the guards of the grove, who came there in hundreds together and banged them.

VERSE 9

मधूनि द्रोण मात्राणि बहुभिः परिगृह्य ते
पिबन्ति सहिताः सर्वे भक्षयन्ति तथा अपरे

madhūni droṇa mātrāṇi bahubhiḥ parigṛhya te
pibanti sahitāḥ sarve bhakṣayanti tathā apare

SYNONYMS

sarve: all those monkeys | sahitāḥ: together | parigṛhya: taking | drone mātrāṇi* madhūni: vessels of honey | bāhubhiḥ: in their arms | pibanti: drank them | apare: some others | nighnanti sma: banged (those who obstructed them). |

TRANSLATION

All those monkeys together took vessels of honey in their arms and drank them. Some others banged those who obstructed them.

PURPORT

Drona= A wooden vessel containing 1024 Mushtis/fists of honey.
VERSE 10

केचित् पीत्वा अपविध्यन्ति मधूनि मधु पिन्गलाः
मधु उच्चिष्टेन केचिच् च जघ्नुः अन्योन्यम् उत्कटाः

kecit pītvā apavidhyanti madhūni madhu pingalāḥ
madhu ucciṣṭena kecic ca jaghnuḥ anyonyam utkaṭāḥ

SYNONYMS

kecit: some monkeys | madhu piṅgalāḥ: with their skin-colour | pītvā: having drunk | madhūni: vessels of honey | pravidhyanti: were throwing (some honey) away | kecicca: some others | madhu ucchiṣṭhena: with remnant of honey after drinking | jagmuḥ: whipped up | anyonyam: one another | utkaṭāḥ: with excessive intoxication. |

TRANSLATION

Some monkeys, with their skin-colour as yellow as honey, after drinking vessels of honey, also threw some honey away. Some others, with the remnant of honey in their arms, after drinking, whipped up one another with their excessive intoxication.

VERSE 11

अपरे वृक्ष मूलेषु शाखाम् गृह्य व्यवस्थितः
अत्यर्थम् च मद ग्लानाः पर्णानि आस्तीर्य शेरते

apare vṛkṣa mūleṣu śākhām gṛhya vyavasthitaḥ
atyartham ca mada glānāḥ parṇāni āstīrya śerate

SYNONYMS

apare: some others | gṛhya: seizing | śākhām: a branch of a tree | vyavasthitāḥ: settled | vṛkṣa mūle: at the foot of a tree | atyartham mada glānāḥ: those who were highly intoxicated | śerate: laid down | āstīrṇa parṇāni: spreading leaves. |

TRANSLATION

Some others, seizing a branch of a tree, stood rooted at the foot of a tree. Some, who were highly intoxicated, laid down spreading leaves on the ground.

VERSE 12

उन्मत्त भूताः प्लवगा मधु मत्ताः च हृष्टवत्
क्षिपन्ति अपि तथा अन्योन्यम् स्खलन्ति अपि तथा अपरे

unmatta bhūtāḥ plavagā madhu mattāḥ ca hṛṣṭavat
kṣipanti api tathā anyonyam skhalanti api tathā apare

SYNONYMS

plavagāḥ: monkeys | madhu mattāḥ: intoxicated with the drinking of honey | unmatta bhūtāḥ: became inebriated | kṣipanti: and were pushing | anyonyam: one another | hṛṣṭavat: cheerfully | tathā: and | apare: some others | skhalanti ca: began to stumble. |

TRANSLATION

Those monkeys, who were intoxicated by drinking the honey, became inebriated and started pushing one another cheerfully and some others began to stumble.

VERSE 13

केचित् क्ष्वेडान् प्रकुर्वन्ति केचित् कूजन्ति हृष्टवत्
हरयो मधुना मत्ताः केचित् सुप्ता मही तले

kecit kṣveḍān prakurvanti kecit kūjanti hṛṣṭavat
harayo madhunā mattāḥ kecit suptā mahī tale

SYNONYMS

kecit: some | prakurvanti: were making | kṣveḍān: lion's roars | hṛṣṭavat: with joy | kūjanti: whistled like birds | kecit harayaḥ: some | madhunā: with honey | suptāḥ: slept | mahī tale: on the floor. |

TRANSLATION

Some were roaring like lions. Some, with joy, whistled like birds. Some monkeys, inebriated as they were by drinking honey, simply slept on the floor.

VERSE 14

कृत्वा केचिर्धसन्त्यन्ये केचित्कुर्वन्ति चेतरत्
कृत्वा केचिद्वदन्त्यन्ये केचिद्बुध्यन्ति चेतरत्

kṛtvā kecirdhasantyanye kecitkurvanti cetarat
kṛtvā kecidvadantyanye kecidbudhyanti cetarat

SYNONYMS

kṛtvā: what they were doing | kecit: some | hasanti: were laughing | anye kecit: some others | kurvanti: were doing | itarat: something else. | vadanti: were telling | budhyanti: were understanding |

TRANSLATION

Doing something or other, some were laughing. Some others were doing something else. Some were telling what they were doing, while some others were understanding some things else.

VERSE 15

ये अपि अत्र मधु पालाः स्युः प्रेष्या दधि मुखस्य तु
ते अपि तैः वानरैः भीमैः प्रतिषिद्धा दिशो गताः

ye api atra madhu pālāḥ syuḥ preṣyā dadhi mukhasya tu
te api taiḥ vānaraiḥ bhīmaiḥ pratiṣiddhā diśo gatāḥ

SYNONYMS

madhu pālāḥ: the honey-keepers | ye: who | syuḥ: were there | preṣyāḥ: as messengers | dadhimukhasya: of Dadhimukha | te'pi: they also | atra: in that Madhuvana | pratiṣiddhāḥ: were warded off | bhīmaiḥ vānaraiḥ: by the terrific monkeys | gatāḥ: and went | diśaḥ: towards different directions. |

TRANSLATION

The honey-keepers, who were there as messengers of Dadhimukha in that Madhuvana, were warded off by the terrific monkeys and they fled to different directions.

VERSE 16

जानुभिः च प्रकृष्टाः च देव मार्गम् च दर्शिताः
अब्रुवन् परम उद्विग्ना गत्वा दधि मुखम् वचः

jānubhiḥ ca prakṛṣṭāḥ ca deva mārgam ca darśitāḥ
abruvan parama udvignā gatvā dadhi mukham vacaḥ

SYNONYMS

prakṛṣṭāḥ: dragged | jānubhiḥ: by their knees | pradarśitāḥ: those honey-keepers who were shown | deva mārgam: the air | parama udvignāḥ: were very much depressed | gatvā: and having gone | dadhimukham: to Dadhimukha | abruvan vacaḥ: spoke the (following) words. |

TRANSLATION

Dragged by their knees and tossed up in the air by the monkeys, those honey-keepers were very much depressed, went to Dadhimukha and complained as follows:

VERSE 17

हनूमता दत्त वरैः हतम् मधु वनम् बलात्
वयम् च जानुभिः कृष्टा देव मार्गम् च दर्शिताः

hanūmatā datta varaiḥ hatam madhu vanam balāt
vayam ca jānubhiḥ kṛṣṭā deva mārgam ca darśitāḥ

SYNONYMS

data varaiḥ hanūmatā: by the monkeys | madhu vanam: Madhuvana | hatam: was destroyed | balāt: violently | vayamca: we | kṛṣṭāḥ: were dragged | jānūbhiḥ: by our knees | darśitāḥ: and were shown | deva mārgam: the air. |

TRANSLATION

"The monkeys, as permitted by Hanuma, violently destroyed Madhuvana. We were dragged by our knees and further tossed up in the air."

VERSE 18

ततो दधि मुखः क्रुद्धो वनपः तत्र वानरः
हतम् मधु वनम् श्रुत्वा सान्त्वयामास तान् हरीन्

tato dadhi mukhaḥ kruddho vanapaḥ tatra vānaraḥ
hatam madhu vanam śrutvā sāntvayāmāsa tān harīn

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | madhu vanam: (that) Madhuvana | hatam: was damaged | dadhimukhaḥ: Dadhimukha | vanapaḥ: the grove-protector | tatra: there | kruddhaḥ: was enraged | tataḥ: and thereafter | sāntvayāmāsa: consoled | tān harīn: those monkeys. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing that Madhuvana was damaged, Dadhimukha, the grove-protector there was enraged and thereafter consoled those monkeys (as follows):

VERSE 19

इह आगच्छत गच्छामो वानरान् अतिदर्पितान्
बलेन आवारयिष्यामो मधु भक्षयतो वयम्

iha āgacchata gacchāmo vānarān atidarpitān
balena āvārayiṣyāmo madhu bhakṣayato vayam

SYNONYMS

āgacchata iha: come here | gacchāma: let us go | vārayiṣyāmaḥ: let us prevent | balena: by our force | vānarān: the monkeys | baladarpitān: who are proud of their strength | bhakṣayataḥ: and who are consuming | madhu: the honey. |

TRANSLATION

"Come here let us go there and prevent by our force, the monkeys who are arrogant of their strength and are consuming the honey."

VERSE 20

श्रुत्वा दधि मुखस्य इदम् वचनम् वानर ऋषभाः
पुनः वीरा मधु वनम् तेन एव सहिता ययुः

śrutvā dadhi mukhasya idam vacanam vānara ṛṣabhāḥ
punaḥ vīrā madhu vanam tena eva sahitā yayuḥ

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | idam: these | vacanam: words | dadhimukhasya: of Dadhimukha | vānara ṛṣabhāḥ: the foremost among the monkeys | vīrāḥ: who display heroism | sahasā: quickly | yayaḥ: went | punaḥ: again | madhu vanam: to Madhuvana | tena eva: along with that Dadhimukha. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing these words of Dadhimukha, the foremost of those monkeys who displayed their heroism, quickly went again to madhuvana along with him.

VERSE 21

मध्ये च एषाम् दधि मुखः प्रगृह्य सुमहातरुम्
समभ्यधावत् वेगेना ते च सर्वे प्लवम्गमाः

madhye ca eṣām dadhi mukhaḥ pragṛhya sumahātarum
samabhyadhāvat vegenā te ca sarve plavamgamāḥ

SYNONYMS

pragṛhya: grasping | tarum: a tree | dadhimukhaḥ: Dadhimukha | samabhyadhāvat: ran | vegenā: with speed | eṣām madhye: towards the middle of those monkeys | sarve: all | te: those | plavaṅgamāḥ ca: monkey-followers too (ran). |

TRANSLATION

Grasping a tree, Dadhimukha speedily took up his position in the middle of those monkeys in Madhuvana. All his follower-monkeys also ran with him.

VERSE 22

ते शिलाः पादपान् च अपि पाषाणान् च अपि वानराः
गृहीत्वा अभ्यागमन् क्रुद्धा यत्र ते कपि कुन्जराः

te śilāḥ pādapān ca api pāṣāṇān ca api vānarāḥ
gṛhītvā abhyāgaman kruddhā yatra te kapi kunjarāḥ

SYNONYMS

te kruddhāḥ vānarāḥ: those enraged monkeys | gṛhītvā: taking | śilāḥ: rocks | pādapan ca api: trees | parvatāmścāpi: and even mountains | abhyāgaman: went | yatra: were | te: those | kapi kuṇjarāḥ: foremost of monkeys (were there). |

TRANSLATION

Those enraged monkeys, taking rocks, trees and even mountains, went to the place wehre those foremost of monkeys were there.

VERSE 23

ते स्वामि वचनम् वीरा हृदयेष्व् अवसज्य तत्
त्वरया हि अभ्यधावन्त साल ताल शिला आयुधाः

te svāmi vacanam vīrā hṛdayeṣv avasajya tat
tvarayā hi abhyadhāvanta sāla tāla śilā āyudhāḥ

SYNONYMS

te: those | vīrāḥ: heroic monkeys | avasajya: keeping | hṛdayeṣu tat svāmi vacanam: the words of their master in mind | tvarayā: briskly | abhyadhāvanta: ran | sāla tāla śilā āyudhāḥ: with Sala trees |

TRANSLATION

Those heroic monkeys, keeping the words of their master in mind, briskly ran with Sala trees, palm trees and rocks as their weapons.

VERSE 24

वृक्षस्थान् च तलस्थान् च वानरान् बल दर्पितान्
अभ्यक्रामन्त ते वीराः पालाः तत्र सहस्रशः

vṛkṣasthān ca talasthān ca vānarān bala darpitān
abhyakrāmanta te vīrāḥ pālāḥ tatra sahasraśaḥ

SYNONYMS

tat: then | vīrāḥ: the valiant | pālāḥ: guards of the grove | sahasraśaḥ: running | abhyakrāman: invaded | vānarān: the monkeys | vṛṣasthān ca: who were on trees | talasthān ca: at the foot of the trees | bala darpitān: and who wee arrogant of their strength. |

TRANSLATION

Then, the valiant guards of the grove running in thousands invaded the monkeys who were on trees, at the foot of the trees and who were arrogant of their strength.

VERSE 25

अथ दृष्ट्वा दधि मुखम् क्रुद्धम् वानर पुम्गवाः
अभ्यधावन्त वेगेन हनूमत् प्रमुखाः तदा

atha dṛṣṭvā dadhi mukham kruddham vānara pumgavāḥ
abhyadhāvanta vegena hanūmat pramukhāḥ tadā

SYNONYMS

atha: thereupon | dṛṣṭvā: seeing | dadhimukham: Dadhimukha | kruddham: enraged | hanumat pramukhāḥ: Hanuma eminent monkeys | tadā: then | abhyadhāvanta: ran towards him | vegena: with speed. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing Dadhimukha coming with anger, Hanuma along with eminent monkeys ran towards him with speed.

VERSE 26

तम् सवृक्षम् महाबाहुम् आपतन्तम् महाबलम्
आर्यकम् प्राहरत् तत्र बाहुभ्याम् कुपितो अन्गदः

tam savṛkṣam mahābāhum āpatantam mahābalam
āryakam prāharat tatra bāhubhyām kupito angadaḥ

SYNONYMS

kupitaḥ: the enraged | aṇgadaḥ: Angada | tatra: there | prāharat: struck | bāhubhyām: with his arms | tam: that Dadhimukha | āryakam: the maternal uncle of his father | mahābalam: who was endowed with extraordinary night | mahābāhum: having long arms | āpatantam: and rushing with speed | savṛkṣam: with a tree in hand. |

TRANSLATION

The enraged Angada struck there with his arms, that long-armed Dadhimukha the maternal uncle his father, who was endowed with extraordinary might and who was rushing with speed with a tree in his hand.

VERSE 27

मद अन्धः अ न वेद एनम् आर्यको अयम् मम इति सः
अथ एनम् निष्पिपेष आशु वेगवत् वसुधा तले

mada andhaḥ a na veda enam āryako ayam mama iti saḥ
atha enam niṣpipeṣa āśu vegavat vasudhā tale

SYNONYMS

mada andhaḥ ca: Blinded with arrogance | saḥ: that Angada | na veda: could not remember | enam: him | iti: as | ayam: he (who was) mama aaryakaH = the maternal uncle of is father | atha: then | niṣpipeṣa: (he) crushed | āśu: quickly | vegavat: and with speed | vasudhātale: on the ground. |

TRANSLATION

Blinded with arrogance, that Angada did not show any mercy to him on the score of his being the maternal uncle of his father and caused him at once to fall down and began to crush him against the ground.

VERSE 28

स भग्न बाहुः विमुखो विह्वलः शोणित उक्षितः
मुमोह सहसा वीरो मुहूर्तम् कपि कुन्जरः

sa bhagna bāhuḥ vimukho vihvalaḥ śoṇita ukṣitaḥ
mumoha sahasā vīro muhūrtam kapi kunjaraḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ vīraḥ: that valiant | kapi kuṅijaraḥ: elephant among the monkeys | vihvalaḥ: who was afflicted | sabhagna bāhūrubhujaḥ: with his broken arms | śoṇito kṣitaḥ: and drenched in blood | sahasā: soon | mumoha: lost his consciousness | muhūrtam: for a moment. |

TRANSLATION

That Dadhimukha, the valiant elephant among the monkeys, who was afflicted with his broken arms, thighs and shoulders, drenched as he was in blood, lost his consciousness for a moment.

VERSE 29

स समाश्वस्य सहसा सम्क्रुद्धो राजमातुलः
वानरान्वारयामास दण्डेन मधुमोहितान्

sa samāśvasya sahasā samkruddho rājamātulaḥ
vānarānvārayāmāsa daṇḍena madhumohitān

SYNONYMS

saḥ rājamātulaḥ: that Dadhimukha | sahasā: quickly | samāśvasya: recovering his breath | samkruddha: was enraged | vārayāmāsa: resisted | vānarān: those monkeys | madhumohitān: who were infatuated because of drinking of honey | daṅḍena: by a reprimand. |

TRANSLATION

That Dadhimukha, Sugreeva's maternal uncle, quickly recovering his breath, was enraged and resisted those monkeys, who were highly intoxicated because of drinking of honey, by a proper reprimand.

VERSE 30

स कथंचित् विमुक्तः तैः वानरैः वानर ऋषभः
उवाच एक अन्तम् आगम्य भृत्यान् तान् समुपागतान्

sa kathaṃcit vimuktaḥ taiḥ vānaraiḥ vānara ṛṣabhaḥ
uvāca eka antam āgamya bhṛtyān tān samupāgatān

SYNONYMS

kathamcit: somehow | vimuktaḥ: released | taiḥ vānaraiḥ: by those monkeys | saḥ vānara ṛṣabhaḥ: that foremost among the monkeys | āśritya: took shelter | ekāntam: at a solitary place | uvācam: and spoke | svān: to his | bhṛtyān: messengers | samupāgatān: who came there. |

TRANSLATION

Somehow released by those monkeys that Dadhimukha the foremost among the monkeys, went to a solitary place and spoke to his messengers who came there (as follows):

VERSE 31

एते तिष्ठन्तु गच्छामो भर्ता नो यत्र वानरः
सुग्रीवो विपुल ग्रीवः सह रामेण तिष्ठति

ete tiṣṭhantu gacchāmo bhartā no yatra vānaraḥ
sugrīvo vipula grīvaḥ saha rāmeṇa tiṣṭhati

SYNONYMS

ete tiṣṭhantu: let these monkeys stay here | gacchāmaḥ: we will go | yatra: to the place where | sugrīvaḥ: Sugreeva | naḥ: our | bhartā: lord | vānaraḥ: the monkey | vipula grīvaḥ: having a thick neck | rāmeṇa saha: along with Rama | tiṣṭhati: are staying. |

TRANSLATION

"Let these monkeys stay here. We will go to the place where the thick-necked Sugreeva, our lord of the monkeys stays together with Rama."

VERSE 32

सर्वम् चैव अन्गदे दोषम् श्रावयिष्यामि पार्थिव
अमर्षी वचनम् श्रुत्वा घातयिष्यति वानरान्

sarvam caiva angade doṣam śrāvayiṣyāmi pārthiva
amarṣī vacanam śrutvā ghātayiṣyati vānarān

SYNONYMS

pārthive śrāvayiṣyāmi: I will make the king hear | sarvam: all | doṣam: the misdeed | aṅgada: of Angada | śrutvā: hearing | vacanam: my words | vānarān ghātayiṣyati amarṣī: the king |

TRANSLATION

"I will make known to the king, all the misdeed of Angada. Hearing my words, the enraged king will get the monkeys killed."

VERSE 33

इष्टम् मधु वनम् हि एतत् सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः
पितृ पैतामहम् दिव्यम् देवैः अपि दुरासदम्

iṣṭam madhu vanam hi etat sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ
pitṛ paitāmaham divyam devaiḥ api durāsadam

SYNONYMS

etat madhuvanam: this Madhuvana | iṣṭam hi: is indeed cherished | mahātmanaḥ pārthivasya: by the high-souled king Sugreeva | pitṛ paitāmaham: and it derived from his father and grand-father | divyam: (It is ) so charming | durāsadam: and is dangerous to be approached | devaiḥ api: even by celestials. |

TRANSLATION

"This Madhuvana is indeed cherished by our high-souled king, Sugreeva and it derived from his father and grand father. It is so charming, but is dangerous to be approached even by celestials."

VERSE 34

स वानरान् इमान् सर्वान् मधु लुब्धान् गत आयुषः
घातयिष्यति दण्डेन सुग्रीवः ससुहृज् जनान्

sa vānarān imān sarvān madhu lubdhān gata āyuṣaḥ
ghātayiṣyati daṇḍena sugrīvaḥ sasuhṛj janān

SYNONYMS

saḥ sugrīvaḥ: that Sugreeva | ghatayiṣyati imān sarvān vānarān sasuhṛj janān: can get all these monkeys together with their companions killed | daṅḍena: as a punishment | (those monkeys are) madhulubhān: lustful of honey | gata āyuṣaḥ: and their longevity got reduced. |

TRANSLATION

"The longevity of these monkeys got reduced, as they were very much lustful of honey. That Sugreeva can get these monkeys together with their companions, killed as a matter of punishment."

VERSE 35

वध्या हि एते दुरात्मानो नृप आज्ञा परिभाविनः
अमर्ष प्रभवो रोषः सफलो नो भविष्यति

vadhyā hi ete durātmāno nṛpa ājñā paribhāvinaḥ
amarṣa prabhavo roṣaḥ saphalo no bhaviṣyati
5-62-35

SYNONYMS

ete: these | durātmanaḥ: evil-minded beings | nṛpa ājñā paribhāvinaḥ: who disregarded the royal command | vadhyāḥ hi: are fit to be capitally punished | naḥ roṣaḥ: our anger | amarṣa prabhavaḥ: springing from our impatience | bhaviṣyati: will become | saphalaḥ: fruitful. |

TRANSLATION

"These evil-minded beings, who disregarded the royal command, are fit to be capitally punished. Our wrath, springing from our impatience, will indeed become fruitful."

VERSE 36

एवम् उक्त्वा दधि मुखो वन पालान् महाबलः
जगाम सहसा उत्पत्य वन पालैः समन्वितः

evam uktvā dadhi mukho vana pālān mahābalaḥ
jagāma sahasā utpatya vana pālaiḥ samanvitaḥ

evam: thus | uktvā: speaking | vanapālan: to the garden-guards | mahābalaḥ: the mighty | dadhimukhaḥ: Dadhimukha | sahasā: quickly | jagāma: went | utpatya: springing up all at once | samanvitaḥ: together | vana pālaiḥ: with the garden-guards. |

TRANSLATION

Thus speaking to the garden-guards, the mighty Dadhimukha quickly springing up all at once, went (to Kishkindha) together with the garden-guards.

VERSE 37

निमेष अन्तर मात्रेण स हि प्राप्तो वन आलयः
सहस्र अंशु सुतो धीमान् सुग्रीवो यत्र वानरः

nimeṣa antara mātreṇa sa hi prāpto vana ālayaḥ
sahasra aṃśu suto dhīmān sugrīvo yatra vānaraḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ vana ālayaḥ: that Dadhimukha = the monkey | prāptaḥ: reached yatra = where | dhīmān sugrīvaḥ vānaraḥ: that intelligent monkey | nimeṣa antara mātreṇa: within an interval of only a moment. |

TRANSLATION

That Dadhimukha, the monkey, reached the place where that Sugreeva, the intelligent monkey was there, within an interval of only a moment.

VERSE 38

रामम् च लक्ष्मणम् चैव दृष्ट्वा सुग्रीवम् एव च
सम प्रतिष्ठाम् जगतीम् आकाशान् निपपात ह

rāmam ca lakṣmaṇam caiva dṛṣṭvā sugrīvam eva ca
sama pratiṣṭhām jagatīm ākāśān nipapāta ha

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | rāmam ca: Rama | lakṣmaṇam caiva: Lakshmana | sugrīvam eva ca: and Sugreeva | nipapāta: (Dadhimukha) descended | sama pratiṣṭhām jagatīm: to a well-leveled ground | ākāśāt: from the sky. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing Rama, Lakshmana and Sugreeva, Dadhimukha descended to a level ground, from the sky.

VERSE 39

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे द्विषष्टितमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye sundarakāṇḍe dviṣaṣṭitamaḥ sargaḥ

TRANSLATION

That Dadhimukha of a great prowess, the supreme lord of the guards, surrounded by all those garden-guards keeping a sad face, made a respectful salutation to Sugreeva with his head, by falling down and touching with his head, the auspicious feet of Sugreeva.
