VERSE 1

ततः स कर्मणा तस्य विस्मितो भीम विक्रमः
हनुमान् रोष ताम्र अक्षो रक्षो अधिपम् अवैक्षत

tataḥ sa karmaṇā tasya vismito bhīma vikramaḥ
hanumān roṣa tāmra akṣo rakṣo adhipam avaikṣata

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | saḥ hanuman: that Hanuma | bhīma vikramaḥ: with a terrific prowess | krodha tāmrākṣaḥ: was enraged and with his red-hot eyes | avaikṣata: saw | rakṣodhipam: that Ravana | vismitaḥ: was surprised | tena tasya: by that Indrait's | karmaṇā: deed. |

TRANSLATION

Then, Hanuma with a terrific prowess, was enraged (at his capture and his being dragged) and saw Ravana with his red hot eyes. He was surprised by that deed of Indrajit.

VERSE 2

भ्राजमानम् महाअर्हेण कान्चनेन विराजता
मुक्ता जाल आवृतेन अथ मुकुटेन महाद्युतिम्

bhrājamānam mahāarheṇa kāncanena virājatā
muktā jāla āvṛtena atha mukuṭena mahādyutim

SYNONYMS

(ṟavana) mahādyutim: was endowed with a great splendor | bhrājamānam: and shone | virājatā: with a glittering | mahārheṇa: and precious | makuṭena: diadem | kāṅcanena: of gold | atha: and | muktā jālāvṛtena: encircled with strings of pearls. |

TRANSLATION

Ravana was endowed with a great splendor and shone with a glittering and precious diadem of gold as also encircled with strings of pearls.

VERSE 3

वज्र सम्योग सम्युक्तैः महाअर्ह मणि विग्रहैः
हैमैः आभरणैः चित्रैः मनसा इव प्रकल्पितैः

vajra samyoga samyuktaiḥ mahāarha maṇi vigrahaiḥ
haimaiḥ ābharaṇaiḥ citraiḥ manasā iva prakalpitaiḥ

SYNONYMS

(ṭhat ṟavana vas adorned) citraiḥ haimaiḥ ābharaṇaiḥ: with bright-coloured gold ornaments | vajra samyoga yuktaiḥ: inlaid with diamonds | mahārha maṇi vigrahaiḥ: and decorated with worthy gems | prakalpitairiva: which appeared as though prepared with the mind. |

TRANSLATION

That Ravana was adorned with bright-coloured gold ornaments, inlaid with diamonds and decorated with worthy gems, which appeared as though they were prepared with the mind.

VERSE 4

महाअर्ह क्षौम सम्वीतम् रक्त चन्दन रूषितम्
स्वनुलिप्तम् विचित्राभिः विविधभिः च भक्तिभिः

mahāarha kṣauma samvītam rakta candana rūṣitam
svanuliptam vicitrābhiḥ vividhabhiḥ ca bhaktibhiḥ

SYNONYMS

(ṟavana) mahārha k͟hhaumasamvītam: was attired in very costly silk | raktacandananrūṣitam: and smeared with red sandal-paste | svanuliptam: and well-painted | vividhābhiśca: with various | vicitrābhiḥ: brightly coloured | bhaktibhiḥ: designs. |

TRANSLATION

Ravana was attired in very costly silk and his body was smeared with red-sandal paste and well painted with various brightly coloured designs.

VERSE 5

विपुलैः दर्शनीयैः च रक्ष अक्षैः भीम दर्शनैः
दीप्त तीक्ष्ण महादम्ष्ट्रैः प्रलम्ब दशनच् चदैः

vipulaiḥ darśanīyaiḥ ca rakṣa akṣaiḥ bhīma darśanaiḥ
dīpta tīkṣṇa mahādamṣṭraiḥ pralamba daśanac cadaiḥ

SYNONYMS

6| (ṟavana lūked) vicitram: strange | daśabhiḥ śirobhiḥ: with his ten heads | bhīmadarśanaiḥ: with terrible looking | darśanīyaiḥ: yet good-looking | raktākṣaiḥ: red eyes | dīpta tīkṣṇa mahādamṣṭraiḥ: with brilliant sharp enormous teeth | pralamba daśanahchadaiḥ: and protruding lips | vīram: a daring demon | mahaujasam: endowed with extraordinary vigour | bhrājamānam: shining brightly | mandaram iva: as Mount Mandra | śikharaiḥ: with its peaks | nānā vyāḻasamākīrṇaiḥ: and infested with snakes of different varieties. |

TRANSLATION

Ravana looked strange with his ten heads, having terrible-looking yet good-looking pair of red eyes each, with brilliant sharp enormous teeth and protruding lips, like a daring demon endowed with extra ordinary vigour, shining brightly as Mount Mandara with its peaks and infested with snakes of different varieties.

VERSE 7

नील अञ्जन चय प्रख्यम् हारेण उरसि राजता
पूर्ण चन्द्र आभ वक्त्रेण सबलाकम् इव अम्बुदम्

nīla añjana caya prakhyam hāreṇa urasi rājatā
pūrṇa candra ābha vaktreṇa sabalākam iva ambudam

SYNONYMS

(ṟavana) rājatā: was shining | hāreṇa: with a pearl necklace | urasi: on his bosom | nīlāṅanacayaprakhyam: looking like a mass of blue antimony | pūrṇacandrābhavaktrṇa: but with his countenance shining like the full moon | ambudamiva: and appearing like a cloud | sabālārkam: illumined by the rising sun. |

TRANSLATION

Ravana was having a pearl necklace casting its splendor on his bosom. He was looking like a mass of blue antimony, but with his countenance shining like the full moon and appearing like a cloud illumined by the rising sun.

VERSE 8

बाहुभिः बद्ध केयूरैः चन्दन उत्तम रूषितैः
भ्राजमान अन्गदैः पीनैः पन्च शीर्षैः इव उरगैः

bāhubhiḥ baddha keyūraiḥ candana uttama rūṣitaiḥ
bhrājamāna angadaiḥ pīnaiḥ panca śīrṣaiḥ iva uragaiḥ

SYNONYMS

bāhubhiḥ: Ravana was distinguished by (twenty) arms | baddha keyūraiḥ: adorned with bracelets | candanottama rūṣitaiḥ: smeared with excellent sandal-paste | bhrājamāna aṅgadaiḥ: and decked with shining Angadas another type of bracelets | pīnaiḥ paṇcaśīrṣaiḥ uragairiva: and looking like large five-hooded serpents |

TRANSLATION

Ravana was distinguished by (twenty) arms, adorned with bracelets, smeared with excellent sandal-paste and decked with shining Angadas another variety of bracelets and looking like large five-hooded serpents.

VERSE 9

महति स्फाटिके चित्रे रत्न सम्योग संस्कृते
उत्तम आस्तरण आस्तीर्णे उपविष्टम् वर आसने

mahati sphāṭike citre ratna samyoga saṃskṛte
uttama āstaraṇa āstīrṇe upaviṣṭam vara āsane

SYNONYMS

sūpaviṣṭam: (Ravana) was comfortably seated | mahati: on a big | varāsane: excellent throne | sphāṭike: of crystal | citre: rendered picturesque | ratna samyoga samskṛte: by being embedded with jewels | uttmāastaraṇa astīrṇe: and overspread with an exquisite covering. |

TRANSLATION

He was comfortably seated on a big excellent throne of crystal, rendered picturesque by being embedded with jewels and overspread with an exquisite covering.

VERSE 10

अलम्कृताभिः अत्यर्थम् प्रमदाभिः समन्ततः
वाल व्यजन हस्ताभिः आरात् समुपसेवितम्

alamkṛtābhiḥ atyartham pramadābhiḥ samantataḥ
vāla vyajana hastābhiḥ ārāt samupasevitam

SYNONYMS

samupasevitam: He was duly waited upon | ārāt: at close quarters | samantataḥ: on all sides | pramadābhiḥ: by young ladies | atyartham alankṛtābhiḥ: well adorned | vālavajanahastābhiḥ: with whisks in their hands. |

TRANSLATION

He was duly waited upon at close quarters on all sides by young ladies, well-adorned and with whisks in their hands.

VERSE 11

दुर्धरेण प्रहस्तेन महापार्श्वेन रक्षसा
मन्त्रिभिः मन्त्र तत्त्वज्ञैः निकुम्भेन च मन्त्रिणा

durdhareṇa prahastena mahāpārśvena rakṣasā
mantribhiḥ mantra tattvajñaiḥ nikumbhena ca mantriṇā

SYNONYMS

12| Balagarvitam: He was proud of his might | caturbhiḥ rakṣobhiḥ: and had four counselors | upopaviṣṭam: sitting nearby | rakṣobhiḥ: all belonging to the demoniacal race | mantratattvajñaiḥ: who knew the secret of good counsel | durdhareṇa: namely Durdhara | prahastena: Prahasta | mahāparśvena: Mahaparshva | rakṣasā: the demons | maṇtriṇā: and the counselor | nikumbhena: Nikumbha | kṛtsnam loka iva: and looked like the entire terrestrial globe | parivṛtam: enclosed | caturbhiḥ sāgaraiḥ: by four oceans. |

TRANSLATION

He was proud of his might and had four counselors sitting nearby, all belonging to the demonical race and who knew the secret of good counsel, viz. Durdhara, Prahasta, Mahaparshva the demon and the counselor Nikumbha and looked like the entire terrestrial globe enclosed by four oceans.

VERSE 13

मन्त्रिभिः मन्त्र तत्त्वज्ञैः अन्यैः च शुभ बुद्धिभिः
अश्वास्यमानम् सचिवैः सुरैः इव सुर ईश्वरम्

mantribhiḥ mantra tattvajñaiḥ anyaiḥ ca śubha buddhibhiḥ
aśvāsyamānam sacivaiḥ suraiḥ iva sura īśvaram

SYNONYMS

āśvāsyamānam: He was being reassured | mantribhiḥ: by counselors | mantratattvajñaiḥ: knowing the secret of good counsel | anyaiḥ: and other | rakṣobhiḥ: demons | śubhabuddhibhiḥ: with auspicious minds | sureśvanam iva: as Indra the lord of celestials | ( is reassured) sraiḥ: by celestials. |

TRANSLATION

He was being reassured by counselors knowing the secret of good counsel and other demons with auspicious minds, as Indra the lord of celestials is reassured by celestials.

VERSE 14

अपश्यत् राक्षस पतिम् हनूमान् अतितेजसम्
विष्ठितम् मेरु शिखरे सतोयम् इव तोयदम्

apaśyat rākṣasa patim hanūmān atitejasam
viṣṭhitam meru śikhare satoyam iva toyadam

SYNONYMS

hanuman: Hanuma | apaśyat: saw | rākṣasapatim: Ravana | ati tejasam: with a great splendor | viṣṭhitam: being present (on the throne) satoyam toyadam iva = like a rainy cloud | meruśikāre: on the peak of Mount Meru. |

TRANSLATION

Hanuma saw Ravana with a great splendor, sitting on the throne, looking like a rainy cloud on the peak of Mount Meru.

VERSE 15

स तैः सम्पीड्यमानो अपि रक्षोभिः भीम विक्रमैः
विस्मयम् परमम् गत्वा रक्षो अधिपम् अवैक्षत

sa taiḥ sampīḍyamāno api rakṣobhiḥ bhīma vikramaiḥ
vismayam paramam gatvā rakṣo adhipam avaikṣata

SYNONYMS

sampīḍyamāno'pi: though tortured | rakṣobhiḥ: by the demons | saḥ: that Hanuman | bhīmavikramaiḥ: of terrific prowess | gatvā: undergoing | paramam: a great | vismayam: surprise | avaikṣata: looked attentively | rakṣodhipam: at Ravana. |

TRANSLATION

Though tortured by the demons that Hanuma, of terrific prowess, experiencing a great surprise, looked attentively at Ravana.

VERSE 16

भ्राजमानम् ततो दृष्ट्वा हनुमान् राक्षस ईश्वरम्
मनसा चिन्तयामास तेजसा तस्य मोहितः

bhrājamānam tato dṛṣṭvā hanumān rākṣasa īśvaram
manasā cintayāmāsa tejasā tasya mohitaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereupon | dṛṣṭvā: seeing | bhrājamānam: the glittering | rākṣaseśvaram: king of demons | hanuman: Hanuma | mohitaḥ: was bewildered | tasya: by his | tejasā: splendor | cintayāmāsa: thought | manasā: in his mind (as follows): |

TRANSLATION

Seeing the glittering Ravana, the king of demons, Hanuma was bewildered by his splendor and thought in his mind as follows:

VERSE 17

अहो रूपम् अहो धैर्यम् अहो सत्त्वम् अहो द्युतिः
अहो राक्षस राजस्य सर्व लक्षण युक्तता

aho rūpam aho dhairyam aho sattvam aho dyutiḥ
aho rākṣasa rājasya sarva lakṣaṇa yuktatā

SYNONYMS

aho rūpam: what figure | aho dhairyam: what courage | aho sattvam: what strength | aho dyutiḥ: what splendor | aho sarvalakṣaṇa yuktā: and what bestowal of all auspicious marks | aho rākṣasarājasya: alas |

TRANSLATION

"What figure, what courage, what strength, what splendor and what amalgam of auspicious marks, alas, this king of demons has!"

VERSE 18

यदि अधर्मो न बलवान् स्यात् अयम् राक्षस ईश्वरः
स्यात् अयम् सुर लोकस्य सशक्रस्य अपि रक्षिता

yadi adharmo na balavān syāt ayam rākṣasa īśvaraḥ
syāt ayam sura lokasya saśakrasya api rakṣitā

SYNONYMS

yadi ayam rākṣaseśvaraḥ: (had) this lord of demons | na syād: not perhaps | balavān: strong | adharmaḥ: in unrighteousness | syāt: he would have been | raksitā: a protector | suralokasyāpi: of even the world of celestials | saśakrasya: including Indra the Lord of celestials. |

TRANSLATION

"Had this lord of demons perhaps not strong in unrighteousness, he would have been a protector of even the world of celestials together with Indra the lord of celestials."

VERSE 19

अस्य क्रूरैर्नृशम् सैश्च कर्मभिर्लोककुत्सितैः
सर्वे बिभ्यति खल्वस्माल्लोकाः सामरदानवाः

asya krūrairnṛśam saiśca karmabhirlokakutsitaiḥ
sarve bibhyati khalvasmāllokāḥ sāmaradānavāḥ

SYNONYMS

asya karmabhiḥ: by his acts | krūraḥ: cruel | nṛśamsaiśca: and violent | lokakutsitaiḥ: despised by the world | sarve lokāḥ: all people | samara dānavāḥ: including gods and demons | bibhyati hi: indeed remain frighteed | asmāt: of him | ayam: he | kruddhaḥ: if enraged | utsahate hi: is indeed capable | kartum: to turn | jagat: the world | ekārṇavan: into a single ocean. |

TRANSLATION

"By his cruel and violent acts despised by the world, all people including gods and demons indeed remain frightened of him. If enraged he is indeed capable to turn the entire world into a single ocean."

VERSE 20

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे एकोनपञ्चाशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye sundarakāṇḍe ekonapañcāśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | prabhāvam: the power | rākṣasarājasya: of Ravana the king of demons | amitonjasaḥ: who had an unlimited vigour | matimān: the intelligent | hariḥ: Hanuma | akarot: formed | bahuvidhām: many kinds | cintām: of thought | iti: in this way. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing the power of Ravana the king of demons, who possessed an unlimited vigour, the intelligent Hanuma formulated many kinds of thoughts in this way.
