VERSE 1

ततः प्रस्रवणम् शैलम् ते गत्वा चित्र काननम्
प्रणम्य शिरसा रामम् लक्ष्मणम् च महाबलम्

tataḥ prasravaṇam śailam te gatvā citra kānanam
praṇamya śirasā rāmam lakṣmaṇam ca mahābalam

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

Keeping Angada the prince in their forefront those monkeys, on reaching Mount Prasravana having forests of variegated appearance, offered their salutation by bowing their heads in reverence to Rama and the mighty Lakshmana, greeting Sugreeva respectfully. Then, they started narrating the news of Seetha.

VERSE 3

रावण अन्तः पुरे रोधम् राक्षसीभिः च तर्जनम्
रामे समनुरागम् च यः च अपि समयः कृतः

rāvaṇa antaḥ pure rodham rākṣasībhiḥ ca tarjanam
rāme samanurāgam ca yaḥ ca api samayaḥ kṛtaḥ

sarve: all | te harayaḥ: those monkeys | ākhyānti: were narrating | rāme samnidhau: in the presence of Rama | etat: all this | rodham: about restraining (Seetha) | rāvaṇa antaḥ pure: in Ravana's gynaecium | rākṣasībhiḥ: by the female-demons | tarjanam ca: frightening her | samanurāgamca: and her complete affection | rāme: towards Rama | yaḥ ayam samayaḥ kṛtaḥ: and the time-limit (two months) given by Ravana. |

TRANSLATION

Those monkeys started to narrate, in the presence of Rama, about, the female-demons, and frightening Seetha in Ravana's gynaecium, her complete affection towards Rama and the time-limit of two months given by Ravana.

VERSE 4

वैदेहीम् अक्षताम् श्रुत्वा रामः तु उत्तरम् अब्रवीत्

vaidehīm akṣatām śrutvā rāmaḥ tu uttaram abravīt

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

Hearing of Seetha being alive, Rama on his part replied, "Where is Seetha, the princess? How is she disposed towards me? O monkeys! Tell me all that about Seetha."

VERSE 6

रामस्य गदितम् श्रुत्व हरयो राम सम्निधौ
चोदयन्ति हनूमन्तम् सीता वृत्त अन्त कोविदम्

rāmasya gaditam śrutva harayo rāma samnidhau
codayanti hanūmantam sītā vṛtta anta kovidam

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | gaditam: the words | rāmasya: of Rama | harayaḥ: the monkeys | codayanti hanumantam: urged Hanuma to tell | rāma sannidhau: in the presence of Rama | sītā vṛtta anta kovidam: (since) Hanuma knows all the incidents about Seetha. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Rama, the monkeys urged Hanuma to tell, in the presence of Rama, all the incidents because he knew them better, about Seetha.

VERSE 7

श्रुत्वा तु वचनम् तेषाम् हनूमान् मारुत आत्मजः
प्रणम्य शिरसा देव्यै सीतायै ताम् दिशम् प्रति

śrutvā tu vacanam teṣām hanūmān māruta ātmajaḥ
praṇamya śirasā devyai sītāyai tām diśam prati

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | teṣām vacanam: their words | vākyajñaḥ: eloquent | hanumān: Hanuma | mārutātmajaḥ: the son of wind-god | praṇamya: saluting | śirasā: with his head | tām diśam prati: towards that direction | devyai sītāyai: of Seetha | uvāca: spoke | vākyam: (the following) words | yathā sītāyāḥ darśanam: how Seetha's seeing occurred. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of those monkeys, the eloquent Hanuma, the son of wind-god saluting towards the direction of the Seetha the princess by bowing his head, spoke the following words, explaining how he saw Seetha.

VERSE 8

समुद्रम् लन्घयित्वा अहम् शत योजनम् आयतम्

samudram langhayitvā aham śata yojanam āyatam

SYNONYMS

didṛkṣayā: with a wish to see Seetha | aham: I | āgaccham: went | laṅghayitvā: crossing | samudram: the ocean | śata yojanam āyatam: of a width of one hundred Yojanas | mārgamāṇaḥ: searching | sītām: Seetha | jānakīm: the daughter of Janaka. |

TRANSLATION

"Having gone across the ocean, a hundred Yojanas wide, I reached the southern shore looking in search of Seetha, Janaka's daughter, with a wish to see her."

VERSE 9

तत्र लन्का इति नगरी रावणस्य दुरात्मनः

tatra lankā iti nagarī rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ

SYNONYMS

tatra: there | dakṣiṇa tīre: at the southern shore | dakṣiṇasya samudrasya: of the southern ocean | vasati: there is | nagarī: a city | laṇketi: called Lanka | durātmanaḥ rāvaṇasya: of the evil-minded Ravana. |

TRANSLATION

"There at the southern shore of the southern ocean, there is city called Lanka of the evil-minded Ravana."

VERSE 10

तत्र दृष्टा मया सीता रावण अन्तः पुरे सती

tatra dṛṣṭā mayā sītā rāvaṇa antaḥ pure satī

SYNONYMS

rāma: O | tatra: there | dṛṣṭā: it was seen | mayā: by me | rāvaṇāntaḥ pure: in Ravana's gynaecium | sītā: Seetha | rāmā: the lady | satī: and the virtuous wife | jīvantī: living | samnyasya: placing | mano ratham: heart's desire | tvayi: in you. |

TRANSLATION

"O Rama! There, living in Ravana's gynaecium in the city, I saw the lady Seetha, your virtuous wife, centering here heart's desire in you."

VERSE 11

दृष्टा मे राक्षसी मध्ये तर्ज्यमाना मुहुः मुहुः

dṛṣṭā me rākṣasī madhye tarjyamānā muhuḥ muhuḥ

SYNONYMS

pramadāvane: In the pleasure-garden | dṛṣṭā: was seen | me: by me | rākṣasīmadhye: in the midst of female demons | rakṣitā: guarded | virūpābhiḥ: by ugly-faced | rākṣabhiḥ: female-demon | tarjyamānā: and threatened | muhuḥ muhuḥ: again and again (by them). |

TRANSLATION

"In that pleasure garden, I saw Seetha sitting in the midst of female demons, guarded by those ugly-faced female-demons as also time and again being threatened by them."

VERSE 12

दुह्खम् आपद्यते देवी तव अदुह्ख उचिता सती

duhkham āpadyate devī tava aduhkha ucitā satī

SYNONYMS

14| vīra: O hero! | tvayā sukhocitā devī: Seetha | āpadyate: is obtaining | duḥkham: grief | kākutthsa: O Rama! | kathamcit: somehow | mārgitā: searched through | mayā: by me | devī: that princess | ekveṇīdharā: wearing a single plait (as a mark of desolation) | dīnā: miserable | tvayi cintāparāyaṇā: remaining absorbed in your thought | adaḥ śayyā: reposing n the floor | vivarṇāṇgī: having discoloured limbs | padminīva: like a louts | himāgame: in the winter-season | vinivṛttārthā: turning back the wish | rāvaṇāt: from Ravana | martavyakṛta niścayā: having determined to die | tvanmanāḥ: and thinking of you. |

TRANSLATION

"O hero! Seetha, who deserves to live happily with you, is obtaining grief. O Rama! I somehow searched that princess, Seetha wearing a single plait (as a as a mark of desolation), looking miserable, remaining absorbed in your thought, reposing on the floor, having discoloured limbs like a lotus in winter, turning back the wish from Ravana, having determined to die, but thinking of you alone."

VERSE 15

इक्ष्वाकु वंश विख्यातिम् शनैः कीर्तयत अनघ

ikṣvāku vaṃśa vikhyātim śanaiḥ kīrtayata anagha

SYNONYMS

anagha: O faultless | naraśārdūla: tiger among men! | : that Seetha | upapāditā: was established | viśvāsam: confidence | mayā: by me | śanaiḥ kīrtayatā: in slowly mentioning | ikṣvāku kula vikhyātim: the fame of Ikshvaku dynasty. |

TRANSLATION

"O faultless tiger among men! Seetha established confidence in me, after I slowly described to her the fame of Ikshvaku dynasty."

VERSE 16

ततः सम्भाषिता देवी सर्वम् अर्थम् च दर्शिता

tataḥ sambhāṣitā devī sarvam artham ca darśitā

SYNONYMS

17| tataḥ: thereafter | devī: Seetha the princess | sambhāṣitā: was spoken | darśitā: and explained | sarvam artham: about all the significance (of my arrival) | śrutvā: on hearing | rāma sugrīvasakhyam: about the friendship between Rama and Sugreeva | upāgatā: she obtained | prītim: satisfaction | asyāḥ: her | samudācāraḥ: right practice of conduct | niyataḥ: is constant | tathā: and | bhaktiśca: her devotion | tvayi: in you |

TRANSLATION

"Thereafter, I spoke and explained to Seetha, about the entire significance of my arrival there. On hearing about the alliance between Rama and Sugreeva, she was quite pleased. Her morality as well as her devotion in you are steadfast."

VERSE 18

एवम् मया महाभागा दृष्टा जनक नन्दिनी
उग्रेण तपसा युक्ता त्वत् भक्त्या पुरुष ऋषभ

evam mayā mahābhāgā dṛṣṭā janaka nandinī
ugreṇa tapasā yuktā tvat bhaktyā puruṣa ṛṣabha

SYNONYMS

puruṣarṣabha: O foremost of men! | mahābhāgā: the illustrious | janakanandinī: Seetha | dṟ^ṣiṭā: was seen | evam: thus | mayā: by me | (ṣītha) yuktā ugreṇa tapasā: was endowed with severe penance | tvadbhaktyā: and devotion towards you. |

TRANSLATION

"O, the foremost of men! I thus saw that illustrious Seetha, endowed with severe penance and devotion towards you."

VERSE 19

अभिज्ञानम् च मे दत्तम् यथा वृत्तम् तव अन्तिके
चित्र कूटे महाप्राज्ञ वायसम् प्रति राघव

abhijñānam ca me dattam yathā vṛttam tava antike
citra kūṭe mahāprājña vāyasam prati rāghava

SYNONYMS

rāghava: O Rama | mahāprājña: of great intelligence! | abhijñānam: a token of remembrance | dattam: was given | me: to me | yathā vṛttam: a previous event | vāyasam prati: about a crow | tava antike: at your vicinity | citrakūṭe: in Mount Chitrakuta. |

TRANSLATION

"O Rama, of great intelligence! To me, she gave as a token of remembrance, a previous event of a crow occurred at your vicinity in Mount Chitrakuta."

VERSE 20

विज्ञाप्यः च नर व्याघ्रो रामो वायु सुत त्वया
अखिलेन इह यत् दृष्टम् इति माम् आह जानकी

vijñāpyaḥ ca nara vyāghro rāmo vāyu suta tvayā
akhilena iha yat dṛṣṭam iti mām āha jānakī

SYNONYMS

jānakī: Seetha | saha: spoke | mām: to me | iti: saying | vāyusut: "O Hanuma! | rāmaḥ: Rama | nara vyāghraḥ: the foremost of men | vijñāpya: is to be informed | akhilena: all | yat: of which | dṛṣṭam: seen | tvayā: by you | iha: here." |

TRANSLATION

"Seetha spoke to me saying, 'O Hanuma! Inform Rama, the foremost among men, all that you have seen here."

VERSE 21

अयम् च अस्मै प्रदातव्यम् यत्नात् सुपरिरक्षितम्
ब्रुवता वचनानि एवम् सुग्रीवस्य उपशृण्वतः

ayam ca asmai pradātavyam yatnāt suparirakṣitam
bruvatā vacanāni evam sugrīvasya upaśṛṇvataḥ

SYNONYMS

sugrīvasya: (while) Sugreeva | upaśṛṇvataḥ: is hearing | bruvatā: and while you are telling | vacanāni: the words | evam: in this way | ayam ca: (let) this jewel | suparikṣitaḥ yatnāt: well-guarded deliberately | pradātavyaḥ ayam ca: be given | asmai: to this Rama. |

TRANSLATION

"While Sugreeva is hearing nearby and while you are telling the words in this way, let this jewel, which is deliberately well-guarded, be given to Rama."

VERSE 22

एष चूडा मणिः श्रीमान् मया ते यत्न रक्षितः
मनः शिलायाः तिकलः तम् स्मरस्व इति च अब्रवीत्

eṣa cūḍā maṇiḥ śrīmān mayā te yatna rakṣitaḥ
manaḥ śilāyāḥ tikalaḥ tam smarasva iti ca abravīt

SYNONYMS

eṣaḥ: this | śrīmān: beautiful | cūḍā maṇiḥ: jewel for the head | suparirakṣitaḥ: has been well-guarded | mayā: by me | arhasi: you ought | smartum: to recall | niveśitaḥ kila tilakaḥ: a mark indeed painted | tvayā: by you (by a slip) | gaṅḍapārśve: on the curve of my cheek | tilake: when my former mark on my forehead | praṇaṣṭe: got effaced. |

TRANSLATION

"This beautiful jewel for the head has been well-guarded by me. You also ought to recall a mark indeed painted by you (by slip) on the curve of my cheek with powder of an orange-red rock, when my former mark on my forehead got effaced."

VERSE 23

एष निर्यातितः श्रीमान् मया ते वारि सम्भवः

eṣa niryātitaḥ śrīmān mayā te vāri sambhavaḥ

SYNONYMS

eṣaḥ śrīmān: this beautiful jewel | vāri sambhavaḥ: which has its origin in sea-water | niryātitaḥ: has been sent | te: to you | dṛṣṭvā: seeing | etam: this vyasahe = in my grief | pramodiṣye: I am feeling happy | tvānīva: as though I am seeing you. |

TRANSLATION

"This beautiful jewel, which has its origin in sea-water, has been sent to you. Seeing this in my grief, I am feeling always happy as though I am seeing you."

VERSE 24

जीवितम् धारयिष्यामि मासम् दशरथ आत्मज

jīvitam dhārayiṣyāmi māsam daśaratha ātmaja

SYNONYMS

daśarātmaja: O Rama! | dhārayiṣyāmi: I shall be sustaining | jīvitam: my life | māsam: for a mouth | āgatā: having come into | vaśam: the control | rakṣasām: of demons | na jīvayam: I cannot survive | ūrdhvam: above | māsāt: one month. |

TRANSLATION

"O Rama! I shall be sustaining my life for a month. Having come into the control of demons, I cannot survive beyond one month."

VERSE 25

इति माम् अब्रवीत् सीता कृश अन्गी धर्म चारिणी

iti mām abravīt sītā kṛśa angī dharma cāriṇī

SYNONYMS

sītā: Seetha | kṛśa aṇgī: with her emaciated body | dharma cāriṇī: practising virtue | ruddhā: confined | rāvaṇāntaḥ pure: in Ravana's gynaceium | utphulla locanā: with her wide-open eyes | mṛgīva: like that of a doe | abravīt: spoke | iti: as following | mām: to me. |

TRANSLATION

"Seetha, with her emaciated body, practicing virtue, confined in Ravana's gynaecium and with her wide-open eyes like that of a doe, spoke to me the following words:

VERSE 26

एतत् एव मया आख्यातम् सर्वम् राघव यत् यथा

etat eva mayā ākhyātam sarvam rāghava yat yathā

SYNONYMS

rāghava: O Rama! | etat: this | sarvam eva: exactly in its entirety | khyātam: has been narrated | mayā: by me | yat yathā: as it occurred | samtāraḥ pravidhīyatām: let a bridge by constructed | sarvathā: by all means | sāgara jale: in the waters of the ocean. |

TRANSLATION

"O Rama! I have narrated to you whatever has occurred, in its entirety. Let a bridge be constructed, by all means, across the waters of the ocean."

VERSE 27

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे पञ्चषष्टितमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye sundarakāṇḍe pañcaṣaṣṭitamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

viditvā: coming to know | tau rāja putrau: that the two princes | jāta āśvāsau: have become confident | pradāya: and having given | tat abhijñānam: that token of remembrance | rāghavāya: to Rama | vāyu putraḥ: Hanuma | śaśamsa: apprised | vācā: in words | sampūrṇam: completely | anupūrvyāt: in regular succession | sarvameva: all that | ākhyātam: was conveyed | devyā: by Seetha the princess. |

TRANSLATION

Coming to know that the two princes, Rama and Lakshmana have become confident and having given that token of remembrance to Rama, Hanuma apprised completely in so many words, in regular succession, all that was conveyed by Seetha, the princess.
