VERSE 1

ततो मूर्ध्ना निपतितम् वानरम् वानर ऋषभः
दृष्ट्वा एव उद्विग्न हृदयो वाक्यम् एतत् उवाच ह

tato mūrdhnā nipatitam vānaram vānara ṛṣabhaḥ
dṛṣṭvā eva udvigna hṛdayo vākyam etat uvāca ha

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvaiva: just after seeing | vānaram: Dadhimukha | nipatitam: who fell | mūrdhnā: touching the head (on his feet) | vānaram ṛṣabhaḥ: Sugreeva the chef of monkeys | tataḥ: there | uvāca ha: spoke | etat: these | vākyam: words | udvigna hṛdayaḥ: with an agitated mind. |

TRANSLATION

Just on seeing Dadhimukha, who fell touching his feet with his head, Sugreeva the chief of monkeys, with an agitated mind, spoke the following words:

VERSE 2

उत्तिष्ठ उत्तिष्ठ कस्मात् त्वम् पादयोः पतितो मम
अभयम् ते भवेत् वीर सत्यम् एव अभिधीयताम्

uttiṣṭha uttiṣṭha kasmāt tvam pādayoḥ patito mama
abhayam te bhavet vīra satyam eva abhidhīyatām

SYNONYMS

vīra: O valiant monkeys! | uttiṣṭha uttiṣṭha: stand up | kasmāt: for what reason | tvam: have you | patitaḥ: fallen | mama pādayoḥ: on my feet? | te abhayam bhavet: I grant you immunity from fear | sarvameva abhidhīyatām: Let the entire truth be spoken!. |

TRANSLATION

"O valiant monkey! Stand up, rise! Why have you fallen on my feet? I grant you immunity from fear. Let the entire truth be spoken!"

VERSE 3

स तु विश्वासितः तेन सुग्रीवेण महात्मना
उत्थाय च महाप्राज्ञो वाक्यम् दधि मुखो अब्रवीत्

sa tu viśvāsitaḥ tena sugrīveṇa mahātmanā
utthāya ca mahāprājño vākyam dadhi mukho abravīt

SYNONYMS

viśvāsitaḥ: thus inspired with confidence | mahātmanā tena sugrīvaṇa: by that high-souled Sugreeva | saḥ sumahā prāñaḥ dadhimukhaḥ: that vastly intelligent Dadhimukha | utthāya: rising up | abravīt: spoke | vākyam: (the following) words: |

TRANSLATION

Thus inspired by the high-souled Sugreeva with confidence, that highly intelligent Dadhimukha, rising up, spoke the following words:

VERSE 4

न एव ऋक्ष रजसा राजन् न त्वया न अपि वालिना
वनम् निसृष्ट पूर्वम् हि भक्षितम् तत् तु वानरैः

na eva ṛkṣa rajasā rājan na tvayā na api vālinā
vanam nisṛṣṭa pūrvam hi bhakṣitam tat tu vānaraiḥ

SYNONYMS

rājā: O king! | vanam: Madhuvana | naiva nispṛṣṭa pūrvam hi: was not indeed set free previously at any time | ṛkṣa rājasā: by Riksharajas | na: nor vaalina api = by Vali eve | tvayā: by you | tacca: It | bhakṣitam: has been consumed | vānaraiḥ: by the monkeys. |

TRANSLATION

"O king! Madhuvana was indeed not set free previously at any time by Riksharajas, your father, or by you, or by even Vali. That Madhuvana has been consumed away by the monkeys."

VERSE 5

एभिः प्रधर्षिताः च एव वारिता वन रक्षिभिः
मधूनि अचिन्तयित्वा इमान् भक्षयन्ति पिबन्ति च

ebhiḥ pradharṣitāḥ ca eva vāritā vana rakṣibhiḥ
madhūni acintayitvā imān bhakṣayanti pibanti ca

SYNONYMS

vānarāḥ: the monkeys | pradharṣitāḥ ca eva: when frightened | ebhiḥ vana rakṣibhiḥ: by these guards of the grove | acintayitvā: disregarding | imān: then | bhakṣayanti: (they) continue to eat (the fruits) | pibanti ca: and drink | madhūni: the honey. |

TRANSLATION

"When these guards of the grove obstructed the monkeys, they disregarded the guards and continue to eat the fruits and drink the honey too."

VERSE 6

शिष्टम् अत्र अपविध्यन्ति भक्षयन्ति तथा अपरे
निवार्यमाणाः ते सर्वे भ्रुवौ वै दर्शयन्ति हि

śiṣṭam atra apavidhyanti bhakṣayanti tathā apare
nivāryamāṇāḥ te sarve bhruvau vai darśayanti hi

SYNONYMS

apavidhyanti: some are throwing away | śiṣṭam: the remnant (after drinking) of the honey | atra: there | tathā: and | apare: some others | bhakṣayanti: are consuming (that remnant) | nivāryamāṇāḥ: (when) prevented (by us) | te sarve: all of them | darśayanti hi: are indeed showing | bhruvaḥ: their eye-brows. |

TRANSLATION

"Some are throwing away a remnant of honey, after drinking it there and some others are consuming that remnant. When prevented by us, all of them are indeed exhibiting their eye-brows to us (in anger)."

VERSE 7

इमे हि सम्रब्धतराः तथा तैः सम्प्रधर्षिताः
वारयन्तो वनात् तस्मात् क्रुद्धैः वानर पुम्गवैः

ime hi samrabdhatarāḥ tathā taiḥ sampradharṣitāḥ
vārayanto vanāt tasmāt kruddhaiḥ vānara pumgavaiḥ

SYNONYMS

ime: (when) these guards of the grove | samrabdhatarāḥ: are more angry | tathā: and | vārayantaḥ: keeping them off | tasmāt vānāt: from that grove | sampradharṣitāḥ: they were threatened | taiḥ kruddhaiḥ vānarapuṅgavaiḥ: by those enraged monkeys. |

TRANSLATION

"When these guards of the grove became angry and tried to keep them off from the grove, those enraged monkeys threatened them."

VERSE 8

ततः तैः बहुभिः वीरैः वानरैः वानर ऋषभाः
सम्रक्त नयनैः क्रोधाद्त् हरयः सम्प्रचालिताः

tataḥ taiḥ bahubhiḥ vīraiḥ vānaraiḥ vānara ṛṣabhāḥ
samrakta nayanaiḥ krodhādt harayaḥ sampracālitāḥ

SYNONYMS

vānara ṛṣabhāḥ: O chief of monkeys! | taiḥ vīraiḥ bahubhiḥ vānaraiḥ: eyes | samrakta nayanaiḥ: having red-eyes | harayaḥ: these monkeys | tataḥ: then | pravicālitāḥ: were driven away | krodhāt: with anger. |

TRANSLATION

"O chief of monkeys! Then, those valiant monkeys in large numbers, having their red eyes in anger, drove away these monkeys."

VERSE 9

पाणिभिः निहताः केचित् केचिज् जानुभिः आहताः
प्रकृष्टाः च यथा कामम् देव मार्गम् च दर्शिताः

pāṇibhiḥ nihatāḥ kecit kecij jānubhiḥ āhatāḥ
prakṛṣṭāḥ ca yathā kāmam deva mārgam ca darśitāḥ

SYNONYMS

kecit: some | nihatāḥ: were struck down | pāṇibhiḥ: with their hands | āhatāḥ: were beaten | jānubhiḥ: with their knees | prakṛṣṭāḥ: being dragged | yathā kāmam: as liked by them | darśitāḥ ca: they were tossed into | deva mārgam: air. |

TRANSLATION

"Those monkeys struck some of the guards with their hands. They beat some of them with their knees. They dragged some of them and tossed them into air."

VERSE 10

एवम् एते हताः शूराः त्वयि तिष्ठति भर्तरि
कृत्स्नम् मधु वनम् चैव प्रकामम् तैः प्रभक्ष्यते

evam ete hatāḥ śūrāḥ tvayi tiṣṭhati bhartari
kṛtsnam madhu vanam caiva prakāmam taiḥ prabhakṣyate

SYNONYMS

tvayi tiṣṭhati bhartari: while you are in the position of a king | ete: these | śūrāḥ: valiant guards | hatāḥ: were beaten | taiḥ: by those monkeys | kṛtsnam: the entire | madhu vanam caiva: Madhuvana too | prakāmam prabhakṣyate: is being eaten completely. |

TRANSLATION

"While you are in the position of a king, those monkeys have beaten these valiant guards and are eating away the entire Maduvana too."

VERSE 11

एवम् विज्ञाप्यमानम् तु सुग्रीवम् वानर ऋषभम्
अपृच्छत् तम् महाप्राज्ञो लक्ष्मणः पर वीरहा

evam vijñāpyamānam tu sugrīvam vānara ṛṣabham
apṛcchat tam mahāprājño lakṣmaṇaḥ para vīrahā

SYNONYMS

tam sugrīvam: to that Sugreeva | vānara ṟ^ṣabham: the excellent of monkeys | vijñāpyamānam: who was being reported | evam: thus | lakṣmaṇaḥ: Lakshmana | para vīrahā: the killer of hostile heroes | mahāprājñaḥ: and a very wise man | apṛcchat: asked (as follows): |

TRANSLATION

Lakshmana, the killer of hostile heroes and a very wise man, asked that Sugreeva, the excellent of monkeys (as follows) while Dadhimukha was thus reporting to him:

VERSE 12

किम् अयम् वानरो राजन् वनपः प्रत्युपस्थितः
कम् च अर्थम् अभिनिर्दिश्य दुह्खितो वाक्यम् अब्रवीत्

kim ayam vānaro rājan vanapaḥ pratyupasthitaḥ
kam ca artham abhinirdiśya duhkhito vākyam abravīt

SYNONYMS

rājam: O king! | kim: why | ayam vānaraḥ: has this monkey | vanapaḥ: the garden-protector | pratyupasthitaḥ: come (here)? | abhinirdiśya: pointing out | kam: what | artham: matter | duḥkhitaḥ: has this monkey in grief | abravīt: spoken | vākyam: some words (to you)? |

TRANSLATION

"O king! Why has this monkey the garden-protector, come here?' Pointing out what matter has this monkey in grief, spoken these words to you?"

VERSE 13

एवम् उक्तः तु सुग्रीवो लक्ष्मणेन महात्मना
लक्ष्मणम् प्रत्युवाच इदम् वाक्यम् वाक्य विशारदः

evam uktaḥ tu sugrīvo lakṣmaṇena mahātmanā
lakṣmaṇam pratyuvāca idam vākyam vākya viśāradaḥ

SYNONYMS

evam: thus | uktaḥ: spoken | mahātmanā lakṣmaṇena: by the high souled Lakshmana | sugrīvaḥ vākyam viśāradaḥ: the eloquent Sugreeva | pratyuvāca: replied | lak͟hṣmaṇam: to Lakshmana | idam: these | vākyam: words. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of the high-souled Lakshmana, the eloquent Sugreeva replied to him as follows:

VERSE 14

आर्य लक्ष्मण सम्प्राह वीरो दधि मुखः कपिः
अन्गद प्रमुखैः वीरैः भक्षितम् मधु वानरैः

ārya lakṣmaṇa samprāha vīro dadhi mukhaḥ kapiḥ
angada pramukhaiḥ vīraiḥ bhakṣitam madhu vānaraiḥ

SYNONYMS

ārya lakṣmaṇa: O esteemed Lakshmana! | dadhi mukhaḥ: Dadhimukha | vīraḥ: the valiant | kapiḥ: monkey | samprāha: is informing | hari puṅgavaiḥ: that by the foremost of monkeys | āgataiḥ: who returned | vicitya: having searched (for Seetha) | dakṣiṇām āśām: from southern direction | aṅgada pramukhaiḥ vīraiḥ: accompanied by Angada and other heroes | madhu: honey | bhakṣitam: was consumed. |

TRANSLATION

"O esteemed Lakshmana! Dadhimukha, the valiant monkey is informing that the foremost of monkeys, who returned from the southern direction, after searching for Seetha as also Angada and other heroes consumed honey."

VERSE 15

न एषाम् अकृत कृत्यानाम् ईदृशः स्यात् उपक्रमः

na eṣām akṛta kṛtyānām īdṛśaḥ syāt upakramaḥ

SYNONYMS

16| yathā: in which manner | taiḥ āgataiḥ: by those returned | vānaraiḥ: monkeys | kṛtsnam vanam: the entire grove | pramathitam: was destroyed | dharṣitam: overpowered | upayuktam: and used | (tathā: seeing that manner) | eṣām: these monkeys | na syāt: would not have indulged | īdṛśaḥ upakramaḥ: in such an exploit | akṛta kṛtyānām: had they not accomplished my purpose. |

TRANSLATION

"By seeing the manner in which these returned monkeys overpowered, destroyed and behaved towards Madhuvana, we can deduce that the monkeys would not have indulged in such an exploit, had they not accomplished my purpose."

VERSE 17

वनम् यथा अभिपन्नम् तैः साधितम् कर्म वानरैः
दृष्टा देवी न संदेहो न च अन्येन हनूमता

vanam yathā abhipannam taiḥ sādhitam karma vānaraiḥ
dṛṣṭā devī na saṃdeho na ca anyena hanūmatā

SYNONYMS

yadā: when | te: those monkeys | abhipannāḥ: have overpowered | anam: Madhuvana | karma: the task | sādhitam: has been accomplished | vānaraiḥ: by the monkeys | devī: Seetha | dṛṣṭā: was found | na sandehaḥ: there is no doubt | na: none | anyena: other | hanumatā: than Hanuma. |

TRANSLATION

"When those monkeys have overpowered Madhuvana, then it means that our task has been accomplished by the monkeys. Seetha was found. There is no doubt. None other than Hanuma must have seen Seetha."

VERSE 18

न हि अन्यः साधने हेतुः कर्मणो अस्य हनूमतः
कार्य सिद्धिः हनुमति मतिः च हरि पुम्गव

na hi anyaḥ sādhane hetuḥ karmaṇo asya hanūmataḥ
kārya siddhiḥ hanumati matiḥ ca hari pumgava

SYNONYMS

na hi anyaḥ: there is indeed none other | hanūmataḥ: than Hanuma | hetuḥ: who is the executor | asya karmaṇaḥ: this work | tasmin vānarapuṅgave: In that Hanuma | kārya siddhiḥ: accomplishment of any object | matiḥ ca iva: intelligence | vyavasāyāḥ ca: strenuous effort | vīryam ca: vigour | śrutam ca api: and learning | pratiṣṭhitam: are well established in his life. |

TRANSLATION

"There is none other than, Hanuma who is the executor in accomplishing this work. In that Hanuma, the foremost among the monkeys, capacity to accomplish any object; intelligence; strenuous, vigour effort; and learning are well established in his life."

VERSE 19

जाम्बवान् यत्र नेता स्यात् अन्गदस्य बल ईश्वरः
हनूमान् च अपि अधिष्ठाता न तस्य गतिः अन्यथा

jāmbavān yatra netā syāt angadasya bala īśvaraḥ
hanūmān ca api adhiṣṭhātā na tasya gatiḥ anyathā

SYNONYMS

yatra: where | jāmbavān: Jambavan | netā syāt: is a leader | mahābalaḥ: the mighty | aṅgadaśca: Angada also (is a leader) | hanumāmśca: and Hanuma | adhiṣṭhātā: is an administrator | gatiḥ: the progress | tasya: of that work | na anyathā: cannot be otherwise. |

TRANSLATION

"Where Jambavan as well as Angada are leaders and Hanuma is an administrator, the progress of that work cannot be as otherwise."

VERSE 20

अन्गद प्रमुखैः वीरैः हतम् मधु वनम् किल

angada pramukhaiḥ vīraiḥ hatam madhu vanam kila

SYNONYMS

madhuvanam hatam kila: It is so reported that Madhuvana has been destroyed | vīraiḥ: by the heroes | aṅgada pramukhaiḥ: with Angada as the chief | vārayantaḥ ca: the garden guards who wee preventing it | sahitāḥ: together | tadā: then | āhatāḥ: were beaten up | jānubhiḥ: with knees. |

TRANSLATION

"It is so reported that Madhuvana has been destroyed by the heroes with Angada as the chief and the garden-guards who were together preventing the damage, were beaten up with knees."

VERSE 21

एतत् अर्थम् अयम् प्राप्तो वक्तुम् मधुर वाग् इह

etat artham ayam prāpto vaktum madhura vāg iha

SYNONYMS

vaktum: to tell | etat artham: this matter | madhura vāk: in sweet words | hariḥ: the monkeys | dadhimukho nāma nāmnā: renowned by Dadhimukha by name | prakhyāta vikramaḥ: with a celebrated prowess | prāptaḥ: has come | iha: here. |

TRANSLATION

"To tell this matter in sweet words, the monkey renowned by Dadhimukha by name, with his celebrated prowess, has come here."

VERSE 22

दृष्टा सीता महाबाहो सौमित्रे पश्य तत्त्वतः

dṛṣṭā sītā mahābāho saumitre paśya tattvataḥ

SYNONYMS

mahābāho: O the long-armed | saumitre: Lakshmana! | sītā: Seetha | dṛṣṭā: was found | paśya: see (it) | tattvataḥ: the truth | tathā: and | sarve: all | vānarāḥ: the monkeys | abhigamya: meeting together | pibanti: are drinking | madhu: honey. |

TRANSLATION

"O the long-armed Lakshmana! Perceive the truth that Seetha has been seen and see that all monkeys, getting together, are drinking honey."

VERSE 23

न च अपि अदृष्ट्वा वैदेहीम् विश्रुताः पुरुष ऋषभ

na ca api adṛṣṭvā vaidehīm viśrutāḥ puruṣa ṛṣabha

SYNONYMS

puruṣa ṛṣabha: O Lakshmana | viśrutāḥ: (if) the renowned | vana okasaḥ: monkeys | adṛṣṭvā: have not seen | vaidehīm: Seetha | na dharṣayeyuḥ: (they) would not have abused | vanam: the grove | datta varam: which was granted as a boon | divyam: and is charming. |

TRANSLATION

"O Lakshmana, the foremost among men! If the renowned monkeys have not seen Seetha, they would not have abused the charming grove; which was granted as a boon."

VERSE 24

ततः प्रहृष्टो धर्म आत्मा लक्ष्मणः सह राघवः

tataḥ prahṛṣṭo dharma ātmā lakṣmaṇaḥ saha rāghavaḥ

SYNONYMS

25| tataḥ: then | dharma ātmā: the righteous | lakṣmaṇaḥ: Lakshmana | saha rāghavaḥ: together with Rama | prahṛṣṭaḥ: felt delighted | śrutvā: hearing | vāṇīm: the words | cyutām: coming | sugrīva vadanāt: from the mouth of Sugreeva | karṇa sukhām: pleasant for the ears | rāmaḥ: Rama | prāhṛṣyata: was rejoiced | mahābalaḥ: the mighty lakSmaNashcha = Lakshmana too | bhṛśam: was very much | prāhṛṣyate: rejoiced. |

TRANSLATION

Then, the righteous Lakshmana, together with Rama, felt delighted. Hearing the words coming from the mouth of Sugreeva, which were pleasant for the ears, Rama was rejoiced. The mighty Lakshmana too was very much rejoiced.

VERSE 26

श्रुत्वा दधि मुखस्य इदम् सुग्रीवः तु प्रहृष्य च
वन पालम् पुनः वाक्यम् सुग्रीवः प्रत्यभाषत

śrutvā dadhi mukhasya idam sugrīvaḥ tu prahṛṣya ca
vana pālam punaḥ vākyam sugrīvaḥ pratyabhāṣata

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | idam: these words | dadhimukhasya: of Dadhimukha | sugrīvaḥ: Sugreeva with a charming neck | samprahṛṣya: was very much pleased | punaḥ: and further | pratyabhāṣataḥ: spoke | vākyam: the following words | vana pālam: to the guardian of the grove. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those words of Dadhimukha, Sugreeva with a charming neck, was very much pleased and further spoke to Dadhimukha, the guardian of the grove (as follows):

VERSE 27

प्रीतो अस्मि सौम्य यत् भुक्तम् वनम् तैः कृत कर्मभिः
मर्षितम् मर्षणीयम् च चेष्टितम् कृत कर्मणाम्

prīto asmi saumya yat bhuktam vanam taiḥ kṛta karmabhiḥ
marṣitam marṣaṇīyam ca ceṣṭitam kṛta karmaṇām

SYNONYMS

saḥ aham: I | prītaḥ asmi: am pleased | yat: that | vanam: Madhuvana | bhuktam: has been enjoyed | taiḥ: by those monkeys | kṛta karmabhiḥ: who have accomplished their act | ceṣṭitam: the act (damage to the grove) | kṛta karmaṇām: done by those monkeys who have accomplished their purpose | marṣaṇīyam: is fit to be forgiven | marṣitam: and it is pardoned. |

TRANSLATION

"I am happy that Madhuvana has been enjoyed by those monkeys, who have accomplished their act. Since the act (damage to the grove) done by those monkeys, who have accomplished their purpose is fit to be forgiven, I pardon them.

VERSE 28

इच्छामि शीघ्रम् हनुमत् प्रधानान्
शाखा मृगान् तान् मृग राज दर्पान्
द्रष्टुम् कृत अर्थान् सह राघवाभ्याम्
श्रोतुम् च सीता अधिगमे प्रयत्नम्

icchāmi śīghram hanumat pradhānān
śākhā mṛgān tān mṛga rāja darpān
draṣṭum kṛta arthān saha rāghavābhyām
śrotum ca sītā adhigame prayatnam

SYNONYMS

rāghavābhyām saha: I | śīghram: soon | icchami: desire | draṣṭum: to see | tān: those | śākhā mṛgān: monkeys | hanumat pradhānān: with Hanuma as their chief | mṛga rāja darpān: having the pride of a lion | kṛta arthān: and who attained their object | śrotum ca: and to hear | prayatnam: about their effort | sītā adhigame: in finding out Seetha. |

TRANSLATION

"I, together with Rama and Lakshmana, soon desire to see those monkeys, with Hanuma as their chief, who having acquired the pride of a lion and who attained his purpose; and also to hear about their effort in finding out Seetha."

VERSE 29

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे त्रिषष्टितमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye sundarakāṇḍe triṣaṣṭitamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | kumārau: these princes | prītisphītākṣau: with their delighted expansive eyes | samprahṛṣṭau: who are thrilled with joy | siddhārthau: and who accomplished their aim | saḥ: that | vānarāṇām rājā: king of the monkeys | atimātram nananda: was very much pleased | viditvā: knowing | karmasiddhim: that accomplishment of their work | āsannām: is coming close | bāhvoḥ: to their hands | aṅgaiḥ: and with his limbs | samhṛṣṭaiḥ: thrilled with joy. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing Rama and Lakshmana with their eyes filled with ecstatic delight, the princes, who were thrilled with joy and who accomplished their aim, Sugreeva that king of the monkeys was very much delighted, knowing that accomplishment of their work is coming close to their hands and his limbs were thrilled with joy.
