VERSE 1

स वेश्म जालम् बलवान् ददर्श
व्यासक्त वैदूर्य सुवर्ण जालम्
यथा महत् प्राव्र्षि मेघ जालम्
विद्युत् पिनद्धम् सविहम्ग जालम्

sa veśma jālam balavān dadarśa
vyāsakta vaidūrya suvarṇa jālam
yathā mahat prāvrṣi megha jālam
vidyut pinaddham savihamga jālam

SYNONYMS

saḥ: That Hanuma | balavān: the strong one | dadarśa: saw | veśmajālam: a group of houses | vyāsaktavaiḍūryasuvarṇajālam: with windows in golden hue embedded with cats eye gems | mahat meghajālam yathā: like a great group of clouds | prāvṛṣi: in rainy season | vidyutpinaddham: made with lighting | savihaṅgajālam: together with a group of birds. |

TRANSLATION

That Hanuma, the strong one, saw a group of houses with windows in golden hue, embedded with cat's-eye gems, like a great group of clouds in rainy season with lighting, together with a group of birds.

VERSE 2

निवेशनानाम् विविधाः च शालाः
प्रधान शन्ख आयुध चाप शालाः
मनो हराः च अपि पुनर् विशाला
ददर्श वेश्म अद्रिषु चन्द्र शालाः

niveśanānām vividhāḥ ca śālāḥ
pradhāna śankha āyudha cāpa śālāḥ
mano harāḥ ca api punar viśālā
dadarśa veśma adriṣu candra śālāḥ

TRANSLATION

Hanuma saw various halls of the houses, important buildings storing conches, bows, and other weapons, and also heartening spacious attics at the top of mountain- like houses.

VERSE 3

गृहाणि नाना वसु राजितानि
देव असुरैः च अपि सुपूजितानि
सर्वैः च दोषैः परिवर्जितानि
कपिर् ददर्श स्व बल अर्जितानि

gṛhāṇi nānā vasu rājitāni
deva asuraiḥ ca api supūjitāni
sarvaiḥ ca doṣaiḥ parivarjitāni
kapir dadarśa sva bala arjitāni

TRANSLATION

Hanuma saw houses glittered by various riches, well worshipped by Devas and Asuras, devoid of all flaws and obtained by the self-might of rakshasas.

VERSE 4

तानि प्रयत्न अभिसमाहितानि
मयेन साक्षाद् इव निर्मितानि
मही तले सर्व गुण उत्तराणि
ददर्श लन्का अधिपतेर् ग्र्हाणि

tāni prayatna abhisamāhitāni
mayena sākṣād iva nirmitāni
mahī tale sarva guṇa uttarāṇi
dadarśa lankā adhipater grhāṇi

SYNONYMS

dadarśa: (Hanuma) saw | tāṇigṛhāṇi: those houses | laṅkādhipateḥ: of the ruler of Lanka | prayanābhisamāhitāni: constructed by great effort | nirmitānīva: as though constructed | sākśātmayena: by Mayaa himself | mahītale: on Earth | sarvaguṇottarāṇi: with all best qualities. |

TRANSLATION

Hanuma saw those houses of the ruler of Lanka, constructed by great effort as though constructed by Mayaa himself on earth with all best qualities.

VERSE 5

ततो ददर्श उच्च्रित मेघ रूपम्
मनो हरम् कान्चन चारु रूपम्
रक्षो अधिपस्य आत्म बल अनुरूपम्
गृह उत्तमम् हि अप्रतिरूप रूपम्

tato dadarśa uccrita megha rūpam
mano haram kāncana cāru rūpam
rakṣo adhipasya ātma bala anurūpam
gṛha uttamam hi apratirūpa rūpam

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

Thereafter Hanuma saw the best house of the lord of rakshasas, having the appearance of a cloud, soul-captivating one having a beautiful form made of gold which has no comparison, suitable of Ravana's might

VERSE 6

मही तले स्वर्गम् इव प्रकीर्णम्
श्रिया ज्वलन्तम् बहु रत्न कीर्णम्
नाना तरूणाम् कुसुम अवकीर्णम्
गिरेर् इव अग्रम् रजसा अवकीर्णम्

mahī tale svargam iva prakīrṇam
śriyā jvalantam bahu ratna kīrṇam
nānā tarūṇām kusuma avakīrṇam
girer iva agram rajasā avakīrṇam

SYNONYMS

(ḥanuma sav ṟavana's house) svargamiva: like heaven | prakīrṇam: thrown | mahītale: upon earth | jvalantam: effulgent | śriyā: with glory | bahuratnakīrṇam: embedded with variety of diamonds | kusumāvakīraṇam: covered by flowers | nānātarūṇām: of various trees | gireḥ agramiva: like the summit of mountain | avakīrṇam: covered | rajasā: by pollen. |

TRANSLATION

Hanuma saw Ravana's house like heaven thrown upon earth, effulgent with glory, embedded with variety of diamonds covered by flowers of various trees, like the summit of a mountain covered by pollen.

VERSE 7

नारी प्रवेकैर् इव दीप्यमानम्
तडिद्भिर् अम्भोदवद् अर्च्यमानम्
हंस प्रवेकैर् इव वाह्यमानम्
श्रिया युतम् खे सुक्र्ताम् विमानम्

nārī pravekair iva dīpyamānam
taḍidbhir ambhodavad arcyamānam
haṃsa pravekair iva vāhyamānam
śriyā yutam khe sukrtām vimānam

SYNONYMS

dīpyamānamiva: being shone | nāripravekāḥ: by the best among the women | ambhodavat: like a cloud | taṭidbhiḥ: by lightening | arcyamānam: being worshipped | vāhyamānamiva: like being carried | hamsapravekaiḥ: by the best swans | śrīyāyutam: full of splendor | vimānam: (like an) aerial car | sukṛtām: of good people | khe: in sky. |

TRANSLATION

Being shone by the best among women like a cloud by lightening, being worshipped, like being carried by the best swans, like an aerial car full of splendor, of good people in sky.

VERSE 8

यथा नग अग्रम् बहु धातु चित्रम्
यथा नभः च ग्रह चन्द्र चित्रम्
ददर्श युक्ती कृत मेघ चित्रम्
विमान रत्नम् बहु रत्न चित्रम्

yathā naga agram bahu dhātu citram
yathā nabhaḥ ca graha candra citram
dadarśa yuktī kṛta megha citram
vimāna ratnam bahu ratna citram

SYNONYMS

dadarśa: Hanuma saw | vimānaratnam: the best house | yuktīkṛta meghacitram: like a beautiful cloud endowed with many hues | nabhaḥ yathā: like the sky | graḥcandracitram: illumined by planets including the moon | bahuratnacitram: decked with numerous precious stones | nagāgram yathā: like a mountain peak | bahudhātu citram: looking picturesque with numerous minerals. |

TRANSLATION

Hanuma saw the best house like a beautiful cloud endowed with many hues, like the sky illumined by planets including the moon, decked with numerous precious stones like a mountain peak, looking picturesque with numerous minerals.

VERSE 9

मही कृता पर्वत राजि पूर्णा
शैलाः कृता वृक्ष वितान पूर्णाः
वृक्षाः क्र्ताः पुष्प वितान पूर्णाः
पुष्पम् क्र्तम् केसर पत्र पूर्णम्

mahī kṛtā parvata rāji pūrṇā
śailāḥ kṛtā vṛkṣa vitāna pūrṇāḥ
vṛkṣāḥ krtāḥ puṣpa vitāna pūrṇāḥ
puṣpam krtam kesara patra pūrṇam

SYNONYMS

mahī: the earth | kṛtā: was made | parvatarājapūrṇa: to be full of mountain ranges | śailāḥ: the mountains | kṛtāḥ: were made | vṛkśavitānapūrṇāḥ: to be abounding of tree | vṛkśāḥ: the trees | puṣpavitāḥpūrṇāḥ: to be full of flowers | puṣpam: the flower | kṛtam: was made | kesarapatrapūrṇam: to be full of filaments and petals. |

TRANSLATION

The earth was made to be full of mountain ranges. The mountains were made to be abounded of trees. The trees were made to be full of flowers. The flower was made to be full of filaments and petals.

VERSE 10

कृतानि वेश्मानि च पाण्डुराणि
तथा सुपुष्पा अपि पुष्करिण्यः
पुनः च पद्मानि सकेसराणि
धन्यानि चित्राणि तथा वनानि

kṛtāni veśmāni ca pāṇḍurāṇi
tathā supuṣpā api puṣkariṇyaḥ
punaḥ ca padmāni sakesarāṇi
dhanyāni citrāṇi tathā vanāni

SYNONYMS

pānḍurāṇi veśmāni ca: white mansions were also | kṛtāni: built | tathā: and | puṣkarāṇica: lakes also | supuṣpāṇi: with beautiful flowers | punaśca: and also | padmāni: lotuses | sakesarāṇi: together with filaments | vanāni: forest | dhanyāni citrāṇi: (that were) the best and wonderful. |

TRANSLATION

White mansions were also built in the same way. Lakes also with beautiful flowers and also lotuses together with filaments and forest that were the best and wonderful.

VERSE 11

पुष्प आह्वयम् नाम विराजमानम्
रत्न प्रभाभिः च विवर्धमानम्
वेश्म उत्तमानाम् अपि च उच्च मानम्
महा कपिः तत्र महा विमानम्

puṣpa āhvayam nāma virājamānam
ratna prabhābhiḥ ca vivardhamānam
veśma uttamānām api ca ucca mānam
mahā kapiḥ tatra mahā vimānam

SYNONYMS

tatra: there | mahākapiḥ: the great Hanuma(saw) | mahāvimānam: a great aerial car | veśmottamānāmapi uccamānam: the best among best of aerial cars | nāmavirājamānam: shining with the name | puṣpāḥvayam: of Pushpaka | ratnaprabhābhiḥ: with the rays of precious stones | vighūrṇamānam: capable of traveling long distances. |

TRANSLATION

There the great Hanuma saw a great aerial car, the best among best of aerial cars, shining with the name of Pushpaka with the rays of precious stones, and capable of traveling long distances.

VERSE 12

कृताः च वैदूर्यमया विहम्गा
रूप्य प्रवालैः च तथा विहम्गाः
चित्राः च नाना वसुभिर् भुजम्गा
जात्या अनुरूपाः तुरगाः शुभ अन्गाः

kṛtāḥ ca vaidūryamayā vihamgā
rūpya pravālaiḥ ca tathā vihamgāḥ
citrāḥ ca nānā vasubhir bhujamgā
jātyā anurūpāḥ turagāḥ śubha angāḥ

SYNONYMS

vihaṅgāḥ: birds | vaiḍūryamayāḥ: of cats eye gems | tathā: as well as | rūpyapravāḻaiśca: made of silver and coral | citrāḥ bhujaṅgāḥ: wonderful serpants | nānāvasubhiḥ: made of various jewels | turagāḥ: horses | subhāṅgāḥ: of beautiful limbs | anurūpāḥ: suitable | jātyā: by their noble breed | kṛtā: were arranged. |

TRANSLATION

Artificial birds made of cat's-eye gems, as well as birds made of silver and coral, wonderful serpants made of various jewels, horses of beautiful limbs suitable by their noble breed were arranged.

VERSE 13

प्रवाल जाम्बूनद पुष्प पक्षाः
सलीलम् आवर्जित जिह्म पक्षाः
कामस्य साक्षाद् इव भान्ति पक्षाः
कृता विहम्गाः सुमुखाः सुपक्षाः

pravāla jāmbūnada puṣpa pakṣāḥ
salīlam āvarjita jihma pakṣāḥ
kāmasya sākṣād iva bhānti pakṣāḥ
kṛtā vihamgāḥ sumukhāḥ supakṣāḥ

SYNONYMS

vihaṅgāḥ: birds | kṛtāḥ: were made | pravāḻajāmbūnadapuṣpapakśāḥ: with corals on their wings and with golden flowers | supakśāḥ: with good wings | āvarjitajihmapakśāḥ: with curved and bent wings | salīlam: in a playful way | bhānti: shining | pakśāḥiva: like helpers | kāmasya: of the god of love | sākśāt: himself. |

TRANSLATION

Birds were made with corals on their wings and ogether with golden flowers, with good wings, with curved and bent wings in a playful way, shining like helpers of the god of love himself

VERSE 14

नियुज्यमानाः च गजाः सुहस्ताः
सकेसराः च उत्पल पत्र हस्ताः
बभूव देवी च कृता सुहस्ता
लक्ष्मीः तथा पद्मिनि पद्म हस्ता

niyujyamānāḥ ca gajāḥ suhastāḥ
sakesarāḥ ca utpala patra hastāḥ
babhūva devī ca kṛtā suhastā
lakṣmīḥ tathā padmini padma hastā

SYNONYMS

gajāḥ: Elephants | padmini: in a lotus-pool | sakesarāśca: with filaments of lotus petals on body | suhastā: with graceful hands | utpalapatrahastāḥ: with lotus petals held in their trunks | niyujyamānāḥ tu: devoted to the worship | lakśmīḥ: of Goddess Lakshmi | tathā: and deviicha = (an image of) Goddess Lakshmi also | padmahastā: holding lotus in Her hand | kṛtā babhūva: was made to exist in Pushpaka |

TRANSLATION

Images of elephants in a lotus-pool with filaments of lotus on body, with lotus petals held in their trunks, were devoted to the worship of an image of Goddess Lakshmi. And also an image of Goddess Lakshmi with four graceful hands and holding lotus in Her hand was made to exist in Pushpaka.

VERSE 15

इति इव तद् ग्र्हम् अभिगम्य शोभनम्
सविस्मयो नगम् इव चारु शोभनम्
पुनः च तत् परम सुगन्धि सुन्दरम्
हिम अत्यये नगम् इव चारु कन्दरम्

iti iva tad grham abhigamya śobhanam
savismayo nagam iva cāru śobhanam
punaḥ ca tat parama sugandhi sundaram
hima atyaye nagam iva cāru kandaram

SYNONYMS

itīva: in this fashion | abhigamyā: nearing | tatgṛham: that house | śobhanam: which was shining | nagamiva: like a mountain | cāruśobhanam: with a beautiful glow | savismayaḥ: became surprised | punaśca: and saw (again) | tat: that house | paramasugandhi: with a great sweet fragrance | sundaram nagamiva: like a beautiful mountain | himātyaye: during spring | cārukandaram: with beautiful case. |

TRANSLATION

In this fashion, nearing that house which was shining like a mountain with a beautiful glow that house with great sweet fragrance like a beautiful mountain during spring, with beautiful cave became surprised and saw (again).

VERSE 16

ततः स ताम् कपिर् अभिपत्य पूजिताम्
चरन् पुरीम् दश मुख बाहु पालिताम्
अदृश्य ताम् जनक सुताम् सुपूजिताम्
सुदुह्खिताम् पति गुण वेग निर्जिताम्

tataḥ sa tām kapir abhipatya pūjitām
caran purīm daśa mukha bāhu pālitām
adṛśya tām janaka sutām supūjitām
suduhkhitām pati guṇa vega nirjitām

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | saḥ kapiḥ: that Hanuma | abhipatyā: nearing | tām purīm: that city of Lanka | pujitām: worshipped (by Rakshasas) dashamukhabaahupaalitaam = ruled by arms of ten-headed Ravana | caran: moving(thereabout) | sudukhitā: became very gloomy | adṛśyā: (on) not seeing | tāmjanakasutām: that Seetha | supūjitām: well worshipped (by all) | patiguṇaveganirjitām: greatly conquered by the virtues of Her husband Sri Rama. |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter that Hanuma nearing that city of Lanka worshipped by Rakshasas, ruled by arms of ten-headed Ravana, moving thereabout became very gloomy on not seeing that Seetha well worshipped by all and greatly conquered by the virtues of Her husband Sri Rama

VERSE 17

इति वाल्मीकि रामायणे आदि काव्ये सुन्दर काण्डे सप्तमः सर्गः

iti vālmīki rāmāyaṇe ādi kāvye sundara kāṇḍe saptamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: Thereafter | tadā: then | manaḥ: the heart | mahātmanaḥ: of the great souled Hanuma | bahuvidhabhāvitātmanaḥ: who contemplated supreme Spirit in many ways | kṛtātmanaḥ: with a disciplined mind | suvartmanaḥ: following ritues path | sucakśuṣaḥ: with good eyes | pravicarataḥ: moving about(in the city of Lanka) | abhavat: became | atidukhitam: greatly sorrowful | apasyataḥ: not seeing | janakasutām: Seetha |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter then the heart of the great souled Hanuma who contemplated supreme spirit in many ways with a disciplined mind following righteous path, with good observant eyes, moving about in the city of Lanka became greatly sorrowful on not seeing Seetha. Thus, this is the 7th chapter in Sundara Kanda of Valmiki Ramayana, the First Epic poem of India.
