VERSE 1

श्रुत्वा तं भीमनिर्ह्रादं शक्राशनिसमस्वनम्
वीक्षमाणा दिशः सर्वा दुद्रुवुर्वानरर्षभाः

śrutvā taṃ bhīmanirhrādaṃ śakrāśanisamasvanam
vīkṣamāṇā diśaḥ sarvā dudruvurvānararṣabhāḥ

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | bhīmanirhrādam: that terrific roar | śakrāśanisamasvanam: equal to the sound of Indra's thunderbolt | vānarāḥ: the monkeys | vīkṣamāṇāḥ: looking (hither and thither) | dudruvuḥ: ran away | bhṛśam: very much | sarvāḥ diśaḥ: towards all directions. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing that terrific roar, similar to the sound of Indra's thunderbolt, the monkeys looking hither and thither, ran away in all directions.

VERSE 2

तानुवाच ततः सर्वान्हनूमान्मारुतात्मजः
विषण्णवदनान्दीनांस्त्रस्तान्विद्रवतः पृथक्

tānuvāca tataḥ sarvānhanūmānmārutātmajaḥ
viṣaṇṇavadanāndīnāṃstrastānvidravataḥ pṛthak

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | hanumān: Hanuma | mārutātmajaḥ: the son of wind-god | uvāca: spoke | tān sarvān: to all those monkeys | vidravat: who were running away | pṛthak: widely apart | viṣaṇṇavadanān: looking dejected | dīnān: miserable | traptān: and frightened. |

TRANSLATION

Then, Hanuma the son of wind-god spoke (as follows) to all those monkeys, who were running away widely apart, looking dejected, miserable and frightened.

VERSE 3

कस्माद्विषण्णवदना विद्रवध्वं प्लवङ्गमाः
त्यक्तयुद्धसमुत्साहाः शूरत्वं क्व नु वो गतम्

kasmādviṣaṇṇavadanā vidravadhvaṃ plavaṅgamāḥ
tyaktayuddhasamutsāhāḥ śūratvaṃ kva nu vo gatam

SYNONYMS

plavaṅgamāḥ: O monkeys! | kasmāt: why | vidravadhvam: are you running away | viṣaṇṇavadanāḥ: looking dejected | tyakta yuddha samutsāhāḥ: and leaving your zeal to fight? | kva: where | vaḥ śūratram: has your valour | gatam: gone? |

TRANSLATION

"O, monkeys! Why are you running away, looking dejected and leaving your zeal to fight? Where has your valour gone?"

VERSE 4

पृष्ठतो।अनुव्रजध्वं मामग्रतो यान्तमाहवे
शूरैरभिजनोपेतैरयुक्तं हि निवर्तितुम्

pṛṣṭhato|anuvrajadhvaṃ māmagrato yāntamāhave
śūrairabhijanopetairayuktaṃ hi nivartitum

SYNONYMS

anuvrajadhvam: come along closely | pṛṣṭhataḥ: behind | mām: me | yāntam: while I am marching ahead | agrataḥ: in front | āhave: in the battle | śūraiḥ: for the valiant | abhijanopetaiḥ: who have betaken themselves in a good family | ayuktam hi: it is indeed not proper | nivartitum: to shrink back. |

TRANSLATION

"Come along closely behind me, while I am marching ahead in the battle. For the valiant who are born in a good family, it is not indeed proper to shrink back from the battle."

VERSE 5

एवमुक्ताः सुसङ्क्रुद्धा वायुपुत्रेण धीमता
शैलशृङ्गान्द्रुमांश्चैव जगृहुर्हृष्टमानसाः

evamuktāḥ susaṅkruddhā vāyuputreṇa dhīmatā
śailaśṛṅgāndrumāṃścaiva jagṛhurhṛṣṭamānasāḥ

SYNONYMS

evam: thus | uktāḥ: spoken | dhīmatā vāyuputreṇa: by the wise Hanuma | hṛṣṭa mānasāḥ: the monkeys in a cheerful mood | jagṛhuḥ: took hold | śailaśṛṅgān: of mountain-peaks | drumān caiva: and trees | snsamkruddhāḥ: in a great fury together. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of that wise Hanuma, the monkeys in a cheerful mood, took hold of mountain-peaks and trees in a great fury.

VERSE 6

अभिपेतुश्च गर्जन्तो राक्षसान्वानरर्षभाः
परिवार्य हनूमन्तमन्वयुश्च महाहवे

abhipetuśca garjanto rākṣasānvānararṣabhāḥ
parivārya hanūmantamanvayuśca mahāhave

SYNONYMS

vānara rṣabhāḥ: the foremost of monkeys | garjantaḥ: while roaring | abhipetuḥ: rushed towards | rākṣasān: the demons | anvayuḥ: they followed | parivārya: by surrounding | hanūmantam: Hanuma | mahāhave: in that great battle. |

TRANSLATION

The foremost of monkeys, while roaring, rushed towards the demons. They followed him, by surrounding Hanuma on all sides, in that great battle.

VERSE 7

स तैर्वानरमुख्यैस्तु हनूमान्सर्वतो वृतः
हुताशन इवार्चिष्मानदहच्छत्रुवाहिनीम्

sa tairvānaramukhyaistu hanūmānsarvato vṛtaḥ
hutāśana ivārciṣmānadahacchatruvāhinīm

SYNONYMS

saḥ hanumān: that Hanuma | vṛtaḥ: being surrounded | sarvataḥ: on all sides | taiḥ vānaramukhyaiḥ: by those monkey-chiefs | adahat: scorched | śatruvāhinim: that army of adversaries | arciṣmān hutāśanaḥ iva: like a flaming fire. |

TRANSLATION

That Hanuma, being surrounded by those monkey-chiefs on all sides, began to consume that army of adversaries as a flaming fire.

VERSE 8

स राक्षसानां कदनं चकार सुमहाकपिः
वृतो वानरसैन्येन कालान्तकयमोपमः

sa rākṣasānāṃ kadanaṃ cakāra sumahākapiḥ
vṛto vānarasainyena kālāntakayamopamaḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ mahākapiḥ: that Hanuma | vṛtaḥ: accompanied | vānara sainyena: by his army of monkeys | cakre: brought about | kadanam: the destroyal | rākṣasānām: of demons | kālāntaka yamopamaḥ: like Yama the lord of death does at the time of universal dissolution. |

TRANSLATION

That Hanuma, accompanied by his army of monkeys, brought about the destruction of demons, as Yama the lord of death does at the time of universal dissolution.

VERSE 9

स तु शोकेन चाविष्टः क्रोधेन च महाकपिः
हनूमान्रावणि रथे महतीं पातयच्छिलाम्

sa tu śokena cāviṣṭaḥ krodhena ca mahākapiḥ
hanūmānrāvaṇi rathe mahatīṃ pātayacchilām

SYNONYMS

saḥ hanumān: that Hanuma | mahā kapiḥ: the great monkey | mahā śokena: with inordinate grief | āviṣṭaḥ: and filled with | kopena ca: rage | pātayat: threw | mahatīm: a large | śilām: rock | rāvaṇī rate: on Indrajit's chariot. |

TRANSLATION

Filled with inordinate grief and rage, that Hanuma the monkey-chief, threw a large rock on Indrajit's chariot.

VERSE 10

तामापतन्तीं दृष्ट्वैव रथः सारथिना तदा
विधेयाश्व समायुक्तः सुदूरमपवाहितः

tāmāpatantīṃ dṛṣṭvaiva rathaḥ sārathinā tadā
vidheyāśva samāyuktaḥ sudūramapavāhitaḥ

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | dṛṣṭvaiva: on seeing | tām: that rock | āpatantīm: rushing upon | rathaḥ: that chariot | vidheyāśva samāyuktaḥ: yoked to obedient horses | apavāhitaḥ: was carried off | vidduram: to a far distance. |

TRANSLATION

On seeing that rock rushing towards them, the obedient horses, yoked to that chariot, carried the chariot off to a far-distance.

VERSE 11

तमिन्द्रजितमप्राप्य रथथं सहसारथिम्
विवेश धरणीं भित्त्वा सा शिलाव्यर्थमुद्यता

tamindrajitamaprāpya rathathaṃ sahasārathim
viveśa dharaṇīṃ bhittvā sā śilāvyarthamudyatā

SYNONYMS

sā śilā: that rock | udyatā: stretched out | vyartham: in vain | aprāpya: without reaching | tam indrajitam: that Indrajit | saha sārathim: along with his charioteer | rathastham: sitting in the chariot | viveśa: penetrated dharaNiim = the ground | bhittvā: splitting itself into bits. |

TRANSLATION

That rock employed in vain, without reaching that Indrajit and his charioteer sitting in the chariot, split itself into fragments and penetrated the ground.

VERSE 12

पतितायां शिलायां तु रक्षसां व्यथिता चमूः
निपतन्त्या च शिलया राक्षसा मथिता भृशम्

patitāyāṃ śilāyāṃ tu rakṣasāṃ vyathitā camūḥ
nipatantyā ca śilayā rākṣasā mathitā bhṛśam

SYNONYMS

śilayā: by the rock | nipatntyā: falling down | rākṣasāḥ: the demons | bhṛśam mathitāḥ: were very much bruised | camūḥ: the army | rākṣasām: of demons | vyathitā: was perturbed | nipatantyā śilayā: over the rock thus falling. |

TRANSLATION

The demons were very much bruised by the falling fragments of the rock. That army of demons was perturbed over the rock thus falling upon them.

VERSE 13

तमभ्यधावञ्शतशो नदन्तः काननौकसः
ते द्रुमांश्च महाकाया गिरिशृङ्गाणि चोद्यताः

tamabhyadhāvañśataśo nadantaḥ kānanaukasaḥ
te drumāṃśca mahākāyā giriśṛṅgāṇi codyatāḥ

SYNONYMS

te vanaukasaḥ: those monkeys | śataśaḥ: in hundreds | mahākāyāḥ: with collossal bodies | udyatāḥ: lifting up | drumāmśca: trees | giriśṛṅgāśca: and mountain-peaks | nadantaḥ: and roaring | abhyadhāvan: rushed headlong | tam: towards that Indrajit. |

TRANSLATION

Hundreds of monkeys with their colossal bodies, lifting up trees and mountain-peaks, rushed roaring towards Indrajit.

VERSE 14

चिक्षिपुर्द्विषतां मध्ये वानरा भीमविक्रमाः
पृक्षशैलमहावर्षं विसृजन्तः प्लवङ्गमाः

cikṣipurdviṣatāṃ madhye vānarā bhīmavikramāḥ
pṛkṣaśailamahāvarṣaṃ visṛjantaḥ plavaṅgamāḥ

SYNONYMS

vānarāḥ: those monkeys | bhīma vikramāḥ: of terrible prowess | kṣipanti: threw trees and mountain-peaks | indrajitam: towards Indrajit | samkhye: in battle | visṛjantaḥ: while shooting | vṛkṣaśaila mahāvarṣam: a great deluge of trees and rocks | plavaṇgamāḥ: the monkeys | cakruḥ: caused | kadanam: destruction | śatrūṇām: their enemies | neduśca: and roared | vividhaiḥ svanaiḥ: in various high tones. |

TRANSLATION

Those monkeys of terrible prowess, threw trees and mountain-peaks towards Indrajit in battle. While shooting a large deluge of trees and rocks, the monkeys caused destruction of their enemies. They roared in various high tones.

VERSE 15

वानरैर्तैर्महावीर्यैर्घोररूपा निशाचराः

vānarairtairmahāvīryairghorarūpā niśācarāḥ

SYNONYMS

abhihatāḥ: struck | vṛkṣaiḥ: with trees | vīryāt: and with prowess | taiḥ mahābhīmaiḥ: by those highly terrible | vānaraiḥ: monkeys | ghora rūpāḥ: of frightful appearance | vyaceṣṭanta: rolled about restlessly raNakShitau = in the battle-field. |

TRANSLATION

Beaten forcibly with trees, by those highly terrible monkeys, those demons of frightful appearance, rolled about restlessly in the battle-field.

VERSE 16

स्वसैन्यमभिवीक्ष्याथ वानरार्दितमिन्द्रजित्

svasainyamabhivīkṣyātha vānarārditamindrajit

SYNONYMS

abhivīkṣya: on seeing | sainyam: his army | vānarārditam: tormented by the monkeys | saḥ indrajit: that Indrajit | kruddhaḥ: enraged | atha: thereupon | pragṛhāyudhaḥ: taking hold of his weapons | yayau: sallied forth | abhimukhaḥ: facing towards | parān: his enemies. |

TRANSLATION

On seeing his army tormented by the monkeys, that enraged Indrajit, taking hold of his weapons, sallied forth, facing towards his enemies.

VERSE 17

स शरौघानवसृजन्स्वसैन्येनाभिसंवृतः

sa śaraughānavasṛjansvasainyenābhisaṃvṛtaḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that Indrajit | dṛḍha vikramaḥ: of firm fortitude | abhisamvṛtaḥ svasainyena: accompanied by his army | avasṛjan: releasing | śaraughān: a multitude of arrows | jaghāna: killed | subahūn: very many number of | kapiśārdūlān: excellent monkeys. |

TRANSLATION

That Indrajit, of firm fortitude, accompanied by his army, by releasing a multitude of arrows, killed a very many number of monkeys.

VERSE 18

शूलैरशनिभिः खड्गैः पट्टसैः कूटमुद्गरैः

śūlairaśanibhiḥ khaḍgaiḥ paṭṭasaiḥ kūṭamudgaraiḥ

SYNONYMS

āhave: in the battle | tasya te anucarāḥ api: his followers too | jaghnuḥ: killed | vānarān: the monkeys | śūlaiḥ: with spikes | aśanibhiḥ: tips of missiles | khaḍġaiḥ: swords | paṭṭiśaiḥ: sharp-edged spears | kūṭamudgaraiḥ: and concealed weapons similar to mallets. |

TRANSLATION

In the battle, Indrajit's soldiers too killed the monkeys with spikes tips of missiles, swords, sharp-edged spears and concealed weapons similar to mallets.

VERSE 19

सस्कन्धविटपैः सालैः शिलाभिश्च महाबलैः

saskandhaviṭapaiḥ sālaiḥ śilābhiśca mahābalaiḥ

SYNONYMS

mahābalaḥ: the mighty | hanūmān: Hanuma | kadanam cakre: played a havoc | rakṣasām: of demons | bhīmakarmaṇām: who had terrible deeds | śālaiḥ: with Shala trees | suskandhaviṭapaiḥ: distinguished by excellent trunks and branches | śilābhiśca: as with rocks. |

TRANSLATION

The mighty Hanuma played a havoc among demons of terrible deeds, with Shala trees, distinguished by excellent trunks and branches as with rocks.

VERSE 20

स निवार्य परानीकमब्रवीत्तान्वनौकसः

sa nivārya parānīkamabravīttānvanaukasaḥ

SYNONYMS

nivārya parānīkam: keeping the hostile army back | saḥ hanumān: that Hanuma | abravīt: spoke | tān vanaukasaḥ: to those monkeys (as follows) | samvivartadhvam: retreat! | idam: this | balam: army | na sādhyam: need not be conquered any more | naḥ: by us. |

TRANSLATION

Keeping the hostile army back, that Hanuma spoke to those monkeys as follows: "Retreat! This army need not be conquered any more by us."

VERSE 21

त्यक्त्वा प्राणान्विचेष्टन्तो राम प्रियचिकीर्षवः

tyaktvā prāṇānviceṣṭanto rāma priyacikīrṣavaḥ

SYNONYMS

yannimittam: for whose sake | yudhyāmaḥ: we have fought | rāma priya cikīrṣavaḥ: with a wish to do what is pleasing to Rama | viceṣṭantaḥ: and making a special effort | tyaktvā: risking | prāṇān: our lives | sā janakātmajā: that Seetha | hatā: has been killed. |

TRANSLATION

"That Seetha for whose sake we have fought so far, with a wish to do what is pleasing to Rama, making a special effort to win, risking our lives has been killed."

VERSE 22

इममर्थं हि विज्ञाप्य रामं सुग्रीवमेव च

imamarthaṃ hi vijñāpya rāmaṃ sugrīvameva ca

SYNONYMS

viñāpya: informing | rāmam: Rama | sugrīvameva ca: and even Sugreeva | imam: about this | artham: matter | vayam: we | kariṣyāmahe: shall do | yat tat: that which | tau: both of them | pratividhāsyete: are prepared to do in return. |

TRANSLATION

"Informing Rama and even Sugreeva about this matter, we shall do that which both of them are prepared to do in return."

VERSE 23

इत्युक्त्वा वानरश्रेष्ठो वारयन्सर्ववानरान्

ityuktvā vānaraśreṣṭho vārayansarvavānarān

SYNONYMS

iti uktvā: thus speaking | vārayan: and keeping back | sarva vānarān: all the monkeys | vānara śreṣṭhaḥ: Hanuma the chief of monkeys | asamtrastaḥ: with absence of fear | sabalaḥ: along with his army | samnyavartata: turned back | śanaiḥ śanaiḥ: slowly as slowly. |

TRANSLATION

Thus speaking and keeping back all the monkeys, Hanuma the chief of monkeys, with absence of fear, along with his army, gradually turned back.

VERSE 24

ततः प्रेक्ष्य हनूमन्तं व्रजन्तं यत्र राघवः

tataḥ prekṣya hanūmantaṃ vrajantaṃ yatra rāghavaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | prekṣya: seeing | hanūmantam: Hanuma | vrajantam: withdrawing | yatra: to the place where | rāghavaḥ: Rama was | duṣṭātmā: the evil-minded | saḥ: Indrajit | gataḥ: went | caityam: to a sanctuary | nikumbhilām: called Nikumbhila | hotu kāmaḥ: seeking to pour oblations into the sacred fire. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing Hanuma with drawing to the place where Rama was, the evil-minded Indrajit went to a sanctuary called Nikumbhila, seeking to pour oblations into the sacred fire.

VERSE 25

निकुम्भिलामधिष्ठाय पावकं जुहुवे न्द्रजित्

nikumbhilāmadhiṣṭhāya pāvakaṃ juhuve ndrajit

SYNONYMS

26| adhiṣṭhāya: arriving at | nikumbhilām: Nikumbhila | indrajit: Indrajit | juhāva pāvakam: poured oblations into the sacred fire | tataḥ: thereupon | hūyamānaḥ: while being propitiated | tena rākṣasā: by that demons | gattvā: on reaching | yaña bhūmyām: the sacrificial ground | pāvakaḥ: the sacricifial fire | prajajvāla: blazed up | māmsa śoṇita bhuk: on consuming the oblations of flesh and blood | tadā: on that occasion. |

TRANSLATION

Arriving at Nikumbhila, Indrajit poured oblations into the sacred fire. Thereupon, while being propitiated by that demon on reaching sacrificial ground, the sacrificial fire then blazed up on consuming the oblations of flesh and blood.

VERSE 27

सो।अर्चिः पिनद्धो ददृशे होमशोणिततर्पितः
सन्ध्यागत इवादित्यः स तीव्राग्निः समुत्थितः

so|arciḥ pinaddho dadṛśe homaśoṇitatarpitaḥ
sandhyāgata ivādityaḥ sa tīvrāgniḥ samutthitaḥ

SYNONYMS

samutthitaḥ: swollen up | homaśoṇita tarpitaḥ: when propitiated with oblations of blood | sutivraḥ: the highly intense | agniḥ: fire | sandhyāgata ādityaḥ iva: like the evening sun | dadṛśe: appeared | arciḥ pinaddhaḥ: wrapped in flames. |

TRANSLATION

Swollen up when propitiated with oblations of blood, the highly intense fire, like the evening sun, appeared wrapped in flames.

VERSE 28

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे द्व्यशीतितमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe vālmīkīye ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe dvyaśītitamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

atha: then | indrajit: Indrajit | vidhānavit: knowing the performance of rites | rākṣasabhūtaye: for the prosperity of the demons | juhāva havyam: poured oblations | vidhinā: according to the scriptural ordinance | dṛṣṭvā: seeing this | te rākṣasāḥ: those demons | nayānayañāḥ: who knew what was prudent course and evil course in major battles | vyatiṣṭhanta: stood firm | mahāsamūheṣu: in large poles. |

TRANSLATION

Then, Indrajit, well-versed with the technique of performance of rites for the prosperity of the demons, poured oblations according to the scriptural precepts. Seeing this, those demons, who knew what was prudent and evil in major battles, stood firm in big piles (by Indrajit's side).
