Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

निर्गतं मकराक्षं ते दृष्ट्वा वानरपुंगवाः
आप्लुत्य सहसा सर्वे योद्धुकामा व्यवस्थ्ताः

nirgataṃ makarākṣaṃ te dṛṣṭvā vānarapuṃgavāḥ
āplutya sahasā sarve yoddhukāmā vyavasthtāḥ

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: on seeing | makarākṣam: Makaraksha | nirgatam: having come forth | sarve: all | te: those | vānarapuṅgavāḥ: chiefs of the monkeys | sahasā āplutya: having jumped up at once | avasthitāḥ: took their positions | yoddhu kāmāḥ: with intent to give fight. |

TRANSLATION

On seeing Markaraksha come out, all those chiefs of monkeys, leaping all at once, took their positions, with intent to give fight.

VERSE 2

ततः प्रवृत्तं सुमहत्तद्युद्धं रोमहर्षणम्
निशाचरैः प्लवंगानां देवानां दानवैरिव

tataḥ pravṛttaṃ sumahattadyuddhaṃ romaharṣaṇam
niśācaraiḥ plavaṃgānāṃ devānāṃ dānavairiva

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | tat: that | sumahat: very great | yuddham: battle | pravṛttam: occurred | plavaṅgānām: between monkeys | niśācaraiḥ: and demons | romaharṣaṇam: which caused the hair to bristle | devānām iva: as between celestials | danavaiḥ: and demons. |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, a very great battle ensued between monkeys and demons, which caused one's hair to bristle, like the encounter between celestials and demons.

VERSE 3

वृक्षशूलनिपातैश्च गदापरिघपातनैः
अन्योन्यं मर्दयन्ति स्म तदा कपिनिशाचराः

vṛkṣaśūlanipātaiśca gadāparighapātanaiḥ
anyonyaṃ mardayanti sma tadā kapiniśācarāḥ

SYNONYMS

kapiniśācarāḥ: the monkeys and the demons | tadā: then | vṛkṣa śūlanipātaiḥ ca: by hurling trees and spikes | gadāparigha pātanaiḥ: and by throwing maces and clubs | mardayantisma: began to crush | anyonyam: each other. |

TRANSLATION

The monkeys and demons then, by hurling trees and spikes and by throwing maces and clubs, began to crush each other.

VERSE 4

शक्तिखड्गगदाकुनैस्तोमरैश्च निशाचराः
पट्टिशैर्भिन्दिपालैश्च बाणपातैः समन्ततः

śaktikhaḍgagadākunaistomaraiśca niśācarāḥ
paṭṭiśairbhindipālaiśca bāṇapātaiḥ samantataḥ

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

Those demons, who were prowlers of might, made a slaughter of the lions among the monkeys, by means of their javelins, swords, maces, spears, lances, sharp edged spears, Bhindipalas (slings for throwing stones), nooses, mallets, staffs, missiles and other weapons and by throwing arrows on all sides.

VERSE 6

बाणौघैरर्दिताश्चापि खरपुत्रेण वानराः
संभ्रान्तमनसः सर्वे दुद्रुवुर्भयपीडिताः

bāṇaughairarditāścāpi kharaputreṇa vānarāḥ
saṃbhrāntamanasaḥ sarve dudruvurbhayapīḍitāḥ

SYNONYMS

arditāḥ: tormented | bāṇanghaiḥ: with a multitude of arrows | kharaputreṇa: by Makaraksha | sarve: all | vānarāḥ: the monkeys | sambhrānta manasaḥ: were bewildered in mind | bhayapīḍitāḥ: agonized with fear | dudruvuḥ: and ran away. |

TRANSLATION

Tormented by Makaraksha with a multitude of arrows, all the monkeys were bewildered in mind, agonized with fear and ran away.

VERSE 7

तान् दृष्ट्वा राक्षसाः सर्वे द्रवमाणान् वनौकसः
नेदुस्ते सिंहवद्दृप्ता राक्षसा जितकाशिनः

tān dṛṣṭvā rākṣasāḥ sarve dravamāṇān vanaukasaḥ
neduste siṃhavaddṛptā rākṣasā jitakāśinaḥ

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: on seeing | tān: those | vanaukasaḥ: monkeys | dravamāṇām: fleeing | sarve: all | rākṣasāḥ: the demons | dṛptāḥ: who were arrogant | simhavat: like lions | neduḥ: roared | jitakāśinaḥ: assuming a triumplant feeling. |

TRANSLATION

On seeing those monkeys fleeing, all the arrogant demons roared like lions, assuming a triumphant feeling.

VERSE 8

विद्रवत्सु तदा तेषे वानरेषु समन्ततः
रामस्तान्वारमायास शरवर्षेण राक्षसान्

vidravatsu tadā teṣe vānareṣu samantataḥ
rāmastānvāramāyāsa śaravarṣeṇa rākṣasān

SYNONYMS

teṣu vānareṣu: (while) those monkeys | vidravatsu: were fleeing | samantataḥ: on all sides | rāmaḥ: Rama | tadā: then | vārayāmāsa: obstructed | tān: those | rākṣasān: demons | śaravarṣeṇa: with a shower of arrows. |

TRANSLATION

While those monkeys were fleeing on all sides, Rama then, with a shower of arrows, intercepted those demons on that occasion.

VERSE 9

वारितान् राक्षसान् दृष्ट्वा मकराक्षो निशाचरः
कोपानलसमाविष्टो वचनं चेदमब्रवीत्

vāritān rākṣasān dṛṣṭvā makarākṣo niśācaraḥ
kopānalasamāviṣṭo vacanaṃ cedamabravīt

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing raakShasaan = the demons | vāritān: being intercepted | makarākṣaḥ: Makaraksha | niśācaraḥ: the demon moving about by night | kopānala samāviṣṭaḥ: engrossed in a fire of anger | abravīt: spoke | idam vacanamca: the following words. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing Rama thus interrupting the demons, Makaraksha, the demon, engrossed in a fire of anger, spoke the following words:

VERSE 10

तिष्ठ राम मया सार्थं द्वन्द्वयुद्धं भविष्यति
त्याजयुष्यामि ते प्राणान् धनुर्मुक्तैः शितैः शरैः

tiṣṭha rāma mayā sārthaṃ dvandvayuddhaṃ bhaviṣyati
tyājayuṣyāmi te prāṇān dhanurmuktaiḥ śitaiḥ śaraiḥ

SYNONYMS

tiṣṭa: pause | rāma: O Rama | bhaviṣyati: there will be | dvandvayuddham: a dual | mayā sārdham: with me | tyājayiṣyāmi te prāṇān: I will make your lives to quit | śitaiḥ śaraiḥ: by the sharp arrows | dhanurmuktaiḥ: discharged from my bow. |

TRANSLATION

"Pause, O Rama! You will have a dual with me. I will make your life to quit, by the sharp arrows discharged from my bow."

VERSE 11

यत्तदा दण्डकारण्ये पितरं हतवान्मम
तदग्रतः स्वकर्मस्थं दृष्ट्वा रोषो।अभिवर्धते

yattadā daṇḍakāraṇye pitaraṃ hatavānmama
tadagrataḥ svakarmasthaṃ dṛṣṭvā roṣo|abhivardhate

SYNONYMS

yat: for which reason | hatavān: you killed | mama pitaram: my father | daṅḍakāraṇya: in the forest of Dandaka | tadā: at that itme | tat: for that reason | roṣaḥ: my anger | abhivardhate: is getting augmented | dṛṣṭvā: in seeing | agrataḥ svakarmastham: you in front engaged in such nefarious acts. |

TRANSLATION

"Since you killed my father on that day in Dandaka forest, my anger is still growing violent, when I think of you engaged in such nefarious acts".

VERSE 12

दह्यन्ते भृशमङ्गानि दुरात्मन्मम राघव
यन्मयासि न दृष्टस्त्वं तस्मिन् काले महावने

dahyante bhṛśamaṅgāni durātmanmama rāghava
yanmayāsi na dṛṣṭastvaṃ tasmin kāle mahāvane

SYNONYMS

durātman: O evil minded | rāgava: Rama! | yat: since | tvam: you | nadṛṣṭaḥ asi: were not being seen | tasmin kāle: from that time | mayā: by me | mahā vane: in that huge forest | mama: my | aṅgāni: limbs | bhṛśam: were very much | dahyante: being fumed. |

TRANSLATION

"O evil minded Rama! Since you were not being seen by me from that time in that large forest, my limbs were getting very much fumed."

VERSE 13

दिष्ट्यासि दर्मनं राम मम त्वं प्राप्तवानिह
कांक्षितो।असि क्षुधार्तस्य सिम्हस्येवेतरो मृगः

diṣṭyāsi darmanaṃ rāma mama tvaṃ prāptavāniha
kāṃkṣito|asi kṣudhārtasya simhasyevetaro mṛgaḥ

SYNONYMS

diṣṭyā: by a good fortune | tvam: you | prāptavān: got | mama darśanam: my sight | iha: here | rāma: O Rama! | kānkṣitaḥ asi: you are being sought | kṣudhāvtasya simhasya iva: as a lion in hunger | itaraḥ mṛgaḥ iva: (seeks) other animal (to eat). |

TRANSLATION

"By a good fortune, you came into my sight here, O Rama! You are being sought by me, as a lion in hunger seeks other animal to eat."

VERSE 14

अद्य मद्बाणवेगेन प्रेतराड्विषयं गतः
ये त्वया निहताः शूराः सह तैश्च वसिष्यसि

adya madbāṇavegena pretarāḍviṣayaṃ gataḥ
ye tvayā nihatāḥ śūrāḥ saha taiśca vasiṣyasi

SYNONYMS

adya: now | madbāṇa vegena: by the flight of my arrows | gataḥ tvayā: (you) having gone | pretarāḍviṣayam: to the world of Death | vasiṣyasica: you will reside | taiḥ śūrāḥ saha: with those warriors | ye: who | nihatāḥ: were killed | tvayā: by you (earlier). |

TRANSLATION

"Now, by the flight of my arrows, you will go to the world of Death and reside there with those warriors, who were killed by you earlier."

VERSE 15

बहुनात्र किमुक्तेन शृणु राम वचो मम
पश्यन्तु सकला लोकास्त्वां मां चैव रणाजिरे

bahunātra kimuktena śṛṇu rāma vaco mama
paśyantu sakalā lokāstvāṃ māṃ caiva raṇājire

SYNONYMS

rāma: O Rama! | kim: what is the use | uktena: by telling | bahunā: too much | atra: on this topic? | śruṇu: hear | mama: my | vacaḥ: words | sakalāḥ: all | lokāḥ: the worlds | paśyantu: will look at | tvām: you | mām caiva: and me | raṇājire: in the battle-front. |

TRANSLATION

"O Rama! What is the use, by telling too much on this topic? Hear my words. All the worlds will look at you and me, in this battle-front."

VERSE 16

अस्त्रैर्वा गदया वापि बाहुभ्यां वा रणाजिरे
अभ्यस्तं येन वा राम वर्ततां तेन वा मृधम्

astrairvā gadayā vāpi bāhubhyāṃ vā raṇājire
abhyastaṃ yena vā rāma vartatāṃ tena vā mṛdham

SYNONYMS

rāma: O Rama! | mṛdham: the battle | vartatām: will go on | raṇājire: in the battle-field | astrairvā: either with the weapons | gadayācāpi: or with a mace | bāhubhyām: or our arms | yena tena vā: or by those means | abhyastam: learnt (by you). |

TRANSLATION

"O Rama! The battle will proceed in the battle-field, either with the weapons, or with a mace or by our arms or by any other means as learnt by you."

VERSE 17

मकराक्षवचः श्रुत्वा रामो दशरथात्मजः
अब्रवीत्प्रहसम् वाक्यमुत्तरोत्तरवादिनम्

makarākṣavacaḥ śrutvā rāmo daśarathātmajaḥ
abravītprahasam vākyamuttarottaravādinam

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | makarakśavacaḥ: the words of Makaraksha | rāmaḥ: Rama | daśarathātmajah: the son of Dasaratha | prahasan: laughingly | abravīt: spoke | vākyam: the following worlds | uttarottaravādinam: to him who was talking further and further (without interruption). |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Makaraksha, Rama the son of Dasaratha laughingly spoke the following words to him, who was still talking further and further (without interruption).

VERSE 18

कत्थसे किं वृथा रक्षो बहून्यसदृशानि ते
न रणे शक्यते जेतुं विना युद्धेन वाग्बलात्

katthase kiṃ vṛthā rakṣo bahūnyasadṛśāni te
na raṇe śakyate jetuṃ vinā yuddhena vāgbalāt

SYNONYMS

rakṣaḥ: O | kim katthase: why are you boasting yourself | bahūni asadṛśāni: with so many unworthy words | vṛthā: in vain? | yuddhena vinā: without fighting | raṇe: in the battle-field | naśakyam: it is not possible | te: for you | jetum: to attain victory | vāgbalāt: with the strength of a mere speech. |

TRANSLATION

"O demon! Why are you boasting yourself with so many unworthy words, in vain? Without fighting in the battle-field, it is well nigh impossible for you to attain victory with the strength of a mere speech."

VERSE 19

चतुर्दश सहस्राणि रक्षसां त्वत्पिता च यः
त्रिशिरा दूषणश्चापि दण्डके निहता मया

caturdaśa sahasrāṇi rakṣasāṃ tvatpitā ca yaḥ
triśirā dūṣaṇaścāpi daṇḍake nihatā mayā

SYNONYMS

caturdaśa: fourteen | sahasrāṇi: thousand | rakṣasām: demons | yaḥ: who | tvatpitā: was your father | triśirāḥ: Trishira | dūṣaṇaścāpi: and even Dushana | nihatāḥ: were killed | mayā: by me | daṅḍake: in Dandaka-forest. |

TRANSLATION

"I killed fourteen thousand demons along with Khara your father, Trishira and even Dushana in Dandaka forest."

VERSE 20

स्वाशिताश्चापि मांसेन गृध्रगोमायुवायसाः
भविष्यन्त्यद्य वै पाप तीक्षणतुण्डनखाङ्कुराः

svāśitāścāpi māṃsena gṛdhragomāyuvāyasāḥ
bhaviṣyantyadya vai pāpa tīkṣaṇatuṇḍanakhāṅkurāḥ

SYNONYMS

pāpa: O sinful one! | adya: today | gṛdhragomāyuvāyasāḥ: vultures | tīkṣṇatuṅḍana khāṅkurāḥ: with their sharp beaks and goad-like claws | bhaviṣyanti: will be | svāśitāḥ: satiated | māmsena: with your flesh. |

TRANSLATION

"O sinful one! Today, vultures jackals and crows with their sharp beaks and goad-like claws will be satiated with your flesh."

VERSE 21

राघवेणैवमुक्तस्तु मकराक्षो महाबलः
बाणौघानमुचत्तस्मै राघवाय रणाजिरे

rāghaveṇaivamuktastu makarākṣo mahābalaḥ
bāṇaughānamucattasmai rāghavāya raṇājire

SYNONYMS

evam: thus | uktaḥ: spoken | rāghaveṇa: by Rama | mahābalaḥ: the mighty | makarākṣaḥ: Makaraksha | amucat: discharged | bāṇaugham: a multitude of arrows | tasmaiḥ rāghavāya: on that Rama | raṇājire: in the battle field. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing Rama's words, the mighty Makaraksha discharged a multitude of arrows on that Rama in the battle-field.

VERSE 22

रान् शरान् शरवर्षेण रामश्चिच्छेद नैअधा
निपेतुर्भुवि ते चिन्ना रुक्मपुङ्खाः सहस्रशः

rān śarān śaravarṣeṇa rāmaściccheda naiadhā
nipeturbhuvi te cinnā rukmapuṅkhāḥ sahasraśaḥ

SYNONYMS

rāmaḥ: Rama | cicheda: tore | tān: those | śarān: arrows | naikadhā: in many ways | śaravarṣeṇa: by his array of arrows | te: those arrows | rukmapuṇkhāḥ: which were provided with golden shafts | nipetuḥ: fell | bhuvi: to the ground | chinnāḥ: when torn | saharaśaḥ: in thousands. |

TRANSLATION

Rama tore those arrows in many ways, by his array of arrows. Those arrows, which were provided with golden shafts, fell to the ground, when torn in thousands.

VERSE 23

तद्युद्धमभवत्तत्र समेत्यान्योन्यमोजसा
खरराक्षसपुत्रस्य सूनोर्दशरथस्य च

tadyuddhamabhavattatra sametyānyonyamojasā
khararākṣasaputrasya sūnordaśarathasya ca

SYNONYMS

tat: that | yuddham: battle | abhavat: raged | ojasā: furiously | sametya: on their meeting | anyonyam: each other | tatra: there | khararākṣasaputrasya: between Makaraksha the son of Khara the demon | daśarathasya sūnoḥ ca: and Rama the son of Dasaratha. |

TRANSLATION

That battle raged furiously, on their meeting each other there, between Makaraksha the son of Khara the demon and Rama the son of Dasaratha.

VERSE 24

जीमूतयोरिवाकाशे शब्दो ज्यातलयोस्तदा
धनुर्मुक्तः स्वनोत्कृष्टः श्रूयते च रणाजिरे

jīmūtayorivākāśe śabdo jyātalayostadā
dhanurmuktaḥ svanotkṛṣṭaḥ śrūyate ca raṇājire

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | śabdaḥ: the sound | dhanurmuktaḥ: emanated by the bows | svanotkruṣṭaḥ: with a great resonance | śrūyate ca: was heard | raṇājire: on the battle-front | jīyūtayoriva: like the rumbling of clouds | ākāśe: in space. |

TRANSLATION

Then, the sound emanated by the bows, with a great resonance, was heard on the battle-front, like the rumbling of clouds in space.

VERSE 25

देवदानवगन्धर्वाः किम्नराश्च महोरगाः
अन्तरिक्षगताः सर्वे द्रष्टुकामास्तदद्भुतम्

devadānavagandharvāḥ kimnarāśca mahoragāḥ
antarikṣagatāḥ sarve draṣṭukāmāstadadbhutam

SYNONYMS

draṣṭukāmāḥ: with an intent to see | tat adbhutam: that wonderful battle | sarve: all | devadānavagandharvāḥ: the celestials | kinnarāśca: mythical beings | mahoragāḥ: and the great serpents | antarikṣagatāḥ: arrived at the sky. |

TRANSLATION

With an intent to see that wonderful battle, all the celestials, the demons, the celestial musicians kinnaras the mythical beings and Mahoragas the great serpents reached the sky.

VERSE 26

विद्धमन्योन्यगात्रेषु द्विगुणं वर्धते बलम्
कृतप्रतिकृतान्योन्यं कुरुतां तौ रणाजिरे

viddhamanyonyagātreṣu dviguṇaṃ vardhate balam
kṛtapratikṛtānyonyaṃ kurutāṃ tau raṇājire

SYNONYMS

anyonyagātreṣuviddham: (Through) the limbs of both were pierced by each other | balam: their strength | dviguṇam vardhate: was redoubled | tau: the two warriors | kṛtapratikṛtānyonyam: inflicted wounds on each other and returned the blows of the other | raṇājire: in the battle-front | kurutām: and performed the combat. |

TRANSLATION

Though the limbs of both were pierced by each other, their strength was redoubled. The two warriors inflicted wounds on each other, returned the blows of the other in the battle-front and continued the combat.

VERSE 27

राममुक्तांस्तु बाणौघान् राक्षसस्त्वच्छिनद्रणे
रक्षोमुक्तांस्तु रामो वै नैकधा प्राच्छिनच्छरैः

rāmamuktāṃstu bāṇaughān rākṣasastvacchinadraṇe
rakṣomuktāṃstu rāmo vai naikadhā prācchinaccharaiḥ

SYNONYMS

raṇe: in the battle | rākṣasaḥ: that demon | acchinat: broke off | bāṇaughān: the multitude of arrows | rāma muktān: discharged by Rama | rāmaḥ: Rama | prācchinat: snapped off | naikadhā: in many ways | śaraiḥ: the arrows | rakṣomuktān: released by the demon. |

TRANSLATION

In the battle, that demon broke the multitude of arrows discharged by Rama. Rama snapped off, in many ways, the arrows released by the demon.

VERSE 28

बाणौघवितताः सर्वा दिशश्च प्रदिशस्तथा
संचन्ना वसुधा चव समन्तान्न प्रकाशते

bāṇaughavitatāḥ sarvā diśaśca pradiśastathā
saṃcannā vasudhā cava samantānna prakāśate

SYNONYMS

sarvāḥ: all | diśaśca: the four quarters | tathā: and | pradiśaḥ: the intermediate points | bāṇaugha vitatāḥ: were diffused with a multitude of arrows | vasudhācaiva: even the earth | samcchannā: was covered | samantatā: on all sides | na prakāśate: and did not become visible. |

TRANSLATION

All the four quarters and the intermediate points were diffused with a multitude of arrows. Even the earth was covered on all sides and did not become visible.

VERSE 29

ततः क्रुद्धो महाबाहुर्धनुश्चिच्छेद संयुगे
अष्टाभिरथ नाराचैः सूतं विव्याध राघवः

tataḥ kruddho mahābāhurdhanuściccheda saṃyuge
aṣṭābhiratha nārācaiḥ sūtaṃ vivyādha rāghavaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | mahābāhuḥ: the long armed | rāghavaḥ: Rama | kruddhaḥ: enraged | samyuge: in battle | cicheda: broke up | dhanuḥ: the bow (of the demon) | atha: thereupon | aṣṭābhiḥ nārācaiḥ: by his eight iron arrows | vivyādha: struck | sūtam: the charioteer. |

TRANSLATION

Then, the long-armed Rama, full of anger in battle, broke off the bow of the demon. Thereupon, by his eight iron arrows, struck the charioteer.

VERSE 30

भित्त्वा रथं शरै रामो हत्वा अश्वाअम[आतौअत्
विरथो वसुधास्थः स मकराक्षो निशाचरः

bhittvā rathaṃ śarai rāmo hatvā aśvāama[ātauat
viratho vasudhāsthaḥ sa makarākṣo niśācaraḥ

SYNONYMS

rāmaḥ: Rama | bhittvā: breaking | ratham: the chariot | śaraiḥ: with his arrows | hatvā: and killing | aśvān: the horses | apātayat: made them to fall down | saḥ makarākṣaḥ: that Makaraksha | niśācaraḥ: the demon | virathaḥ: bereft of his chariot | vasudhāsthaḥ: stood on the ground. |

TRANSLATION

Rama, breaking the chariot with his arrows and killing its horses, made them to fall down dead. That Makaraksha the demon, bereft of his chariot, stood on the ground.

VERSE 31

तत्तिष्ठद्वसुधां रक्षः शूलं जग्राह पाणिना
त्रासनम् सर्वभूतानां युगान्ताग्निसमप्रभम्

tattiṣṭhadvasudhāṃ rakṣaḥ śūlaṃ jagrāha pāṇinā
trāsanam sarvabhūtānāṃ yugāntāgnisamaprabham

SYNONYMS

tat: that | rakṣaḥ: demon | tiṣṭhat vasudhām: standing on the ground | jagrāha: took | pāṇinā: into his hand | śūlam: a spike | trāsanam: which created fright | sarva bhūtānām: among all living beings | yugāntāgni samaprabham: and whose splendour was equal to that of fire at the end of the world. |

TRANSLATION

That demon, standing on the ground, took into his hand, a spike, which created fright among all living beings and whose splendour was equal to the fire at the end of the world.

VERSE 32

दुरवापं महच्छूलं रुद्रदत्तं भयंकरम्
जाज्वल्यमानमाकाशे संहारास्त्रमिवापरम्

duravāpaṃ mahacchūlaṃ rudradattaṃ bhayaṃkaram
jājvalyamānamākāśe saṃhārāstramivāparam

SYNONYMS

mahat śūlam: (He took) that great spike | yam dṛṣṭvā: by seeing which | sarvāḥ devatāḥ: all the godheads | bhayārtāḥ: were afflicted with fear | vidrutāh: and fled | diśaḥ: to different directions | duravāpam: which was difficult to be obtained | rudradattam: which was gifted by Rudra | bhayamkaram: which was terrible | jājvalyamānam: which flamed violently | ākāśo: in the sky | aparam samhārāstram iva: like another weapon of destruction. |

TRANSLATION

That great spike, which was difficult to be obtained, was gifted to him by Rudra, one of the eight forms of Shiva the Lord of Dissolution. That terrible spike, which flamed violently in the sky, looked like another new weapon of destruction of the world. On seeing it, all the godheads were afflicted with fear and fled to different quarters.

VERSE 33

विभ्राम्य च महच्चूलं प्रज्वलन्तं निशाचरः

vibhrāmya ca mahaccūlaṃ prajvalantaṃ niśācaraḥ

SYNONYMS

vibhrāmyaca: whirling | mahat: that great | śūlam: spike | prajvalantam: which was flaming | niśācaraḥ: that demon | krodhāt: in rage | prāhiṇot: hurled it | tasmai mahātmane rāghavāya: against that great-souled Rama. |

Brandishing that flaming great spike, that enraged demon hurled it against that great-souled rama.

VERSE 34

तमापतन्तं ज्वलितं खरपुत्रकराच्च्युतम्

tamāpatantaṃ jvalitaṃ kharaputrakarāccyutam

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

Rama broke, by his four arrows, that flaming spike coming forth from Makaraksha's arm and rushing towards him in the sky.

VERSE 35

स भिन्नो नैकधा शूलो दिव्यहाटकमण्डितः

sa bhinno naikadhā śūlo divyahāṭakamaṇḍitaḥ

saḥ śūlaḥ: that spike | divyahāṭakamaṅḍitaḥ: adored with charming gold | bhinnaḥ: broken | naikadhā: in many ways | rāmabāṇārditaḥ: and tormented by Rama's arrows | vyaśīryata: fell scattered | bhuvi: on the earth | maholkena: like a mighty meteor. |

TRANSLATION

That spike, adored with charming gold, broken in many ways, struck by Rama's arrows, fell scattered on the earth, like a mighty meteor.

VERSE 36

तच्छूलं निहतम् दृष्ट्वा रामेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा

tacchūlaṃ nihatam dṛṣṭvā rāmeṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā

Seeing that spike struck by Rama, who was unwearied in action, the beings standing in the air, cried, saying 'Excellent, Excellent!'.

तं दृष्ट्वा निहतं शूलं मकराक्षो निशाचरः

taṃ dṛṣṭvā nihataṃ śūlaṃ makarākṣo niśācaraḥ

स तं दृष्ट्वापतन्तं तु प्रहस्य रघुनन्दनः

sa taṃ dṛṣṭvāpatantaṃ tu prahasya raghunandanaḥ

Then, seeing Makaraksha rushing towards him, that Rama the delight of Raghu dynasty, while smiling, fitted to his bow, a mystic missile presided over by fire.

VERSE 39

तेनास्त्रेण हतं रक्षः काकुत्स्थेन तदा रणे

tenāstreṇa hataṃ rakṣaḥ kākutsthena tadā raṇe

SYNONYMS

VERSE 40

दृष्ट्वा ते राक्षसाः सर्वे मकराक्षस्य पातनम्

dṛṣṭvā te rākṣasāḥ sarve makarākṣasya pātanam

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे नवसप्ततितमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe vālmīkīye ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe navasaptatitamaḥ sargaḥ

TRANSLATION

Thrilled with delight, the celestials watched that demon, the son of Khara, destroyed by the flights of Rama's arrows and resembling a mountain shattered, after struck by lightning.
