Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

निकुम्भो भ्रातरं दृष्ट्वा सुग्रीवेण निपातितम्
प्रदहन्निव कोपेन वानरेन्द्रमुदैक्षत

nikumbho bhrātaraṃ dṛṣṭvā sugrīveṇa nipātitam
pradahanniva kopena vānarendramudaikṣata

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | bhrātaram: his brother | nipātitam: stretched (on the ground) | sugrīveṇa: by Sugreeva | udaikṣata kopena: he cast angry looks | pradahanniva: as is would burn him (into ashes). |

TRANSLATION

Seeing his brother stretched on the ground, Nikumbha cast angry looks at Sugreeva, as it would burn him into ashes.

VERSE 2

ततः स्रग्दामसंनद्धं दत्तपञ्चाङ्गुलम् शुभम्
आददे परिघं धीरो महेन्द्रशिखरोपमम्

tataḥ sragdāmasaṃnaddhaṃ dattapañcāṅgulam śubham
ādade parighaṃ dhīro mahendraśikharopamam

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | dhīraḥ: Nikumbha of firmness | ādade: grasped | parigham: his iron club | mahendra śikharopamam: stupendous like the crest of Mount Mandara | śubham: which was bright | sragdāma samnaddam: festooned with wreaths | dattapaṅcāṇgulam: and provided with iron plates measuring five digits in breadth. |

TRANSLATION

Then, Nikumbha of firm mind grasped his iron club, stupendous like the crest of Mount Mandara and which was bright, festooned with wreaths and provided with iron plates, measuring five digits in breadth.

VERSE 3

हेमपट्टपरिक्षिप्तं वज्रविद्रुमभूषितम्
यमदण्डोपमं भीमं रक्षसां भयनाशनम्

hemapaṭṭaparikṣiptaṃ vajravidrumabhūṣitam
yamadaṇḍopamaṃ bhīmaṃ rakṣasāṃ bhayanāśanam

SYNONYMS

hema paṭṭaparikṣiptam: round it ran a broad strip of gold | vajra vidrumabhūṣitam: while diamonds and rubies studded it all over | yama daṅḍopamam: like the death-dealing rod of Yama (it seemed) | bhīmam: causing dismay to the monkeys | bhayanāśanam: and nerving the demons with courage. |

TRANSLATION

Round it ran a broad strip of gold while diamonds and rubies studded it all over. Like the death-dealing rod of Yama, it seemed causing dismay to the monkeys and nerving the demons with courage.

VERSE 4

तमाविध्य महातेजाः शक्रध्वजसमौजसम्
निननाद विवृत्तास्यो निकुम्भो भीमविक्रमः

tamāvidhya mahātejāḥ śakradhvajasamaujasam
ninanāda vivṛttāsyo nikumbho bhīmavikramaḥ

SYNONYMS

āvidhya: wielding | tam: that weapon | śakradhvaja samaujasam: which in size resembled the flag-staff of Indra | nikumbhaḥ: Nikumbha | bhīmavikramaḥ: of terrific prowess | ninanāda: roared | vivṛttāsya: with his mouth yawning wide. |

TRANSLATION

Wielding that weapon, which in size resembled the flag-staff of Indra, Nikumbha of terrific prowess, roared with his mouth yawing wide.

VERSE 5

उरोगतेन निष्केण भुजस्थैरङ्गदैरपि
कुण्डलाभ्यां च चित्राभ्यां मालया च स चित्रया

urogatena niṣkeṇa bhujasthairaṅgadairapi
kuṇḍalābhyāṃ ca citrābhyāṃ mālayā ca sa citrayā

SYNONYMS

6| urogatena: on his chest | niṣkeṇa: (shone) a medal of gold | bhujasthaiḥ: his arms were held | aṅgadaiḥ api: by beautiful bracelets | citrābhyām: lustrous | kuṅḍalābhyām: pendants depended from his ears | citrayā: resplendent | mālayāca: garland | bhūṣaṇaiḥ: with these ornaments | tena parigheṇaca: and with his club | saḥ nikumbhaḥ: that Nikumbha | bhātisma: shone (assumed) | meghaḥ yatha: (the threatening semblance) of a cloud | savidyut stanayitnumān: with lightning and thunder | indradhamṣā: and shot with (a vivid) rainbow. |

TRANSLATION

On his chest shone a medal of gold. His arms were held by beautiful bracelets. Lustrous pendants depended from his ear. Resplendent garland enfolded his neck. With these ornaments and with his club, Nikumbha assumed the threatening semblance of a cloud, with lightning and thunder and shot with a vivid rainbow.

VERSE 7

परिघाग्रेण पुस्फोट वातग्रन्थिर्महात्मन्ः
प्रजज्वाल सघोषश्च विधूम इव पावकः

parighāgreṇa pusphoṭa vātagranthirmahātmanḥ
prajajvāla saghoṣaśca vidhūma iva pāvakaḥ

SYNONYMS

parighāgreṇa: with his club in front | mahātmanaḥ: of the mighty Nikumbha | puśpoṭa vātagranthiḥ: the noise was like the bursting yell of seven winds of heaven | prajajvāla: and illumined | pāvakaḥ iva: like the fire-god | vidhūmaḥ: bereft of smoke. |

TRANSLATION

The strong Nikumbha, with his arms as strong as his club, hurled his club having sun-like splendour, on the breast of that mighty Hanuma.

VERSE 8

नगर्या विटपावत्या गन्धर्वभवनोत्तमैः
सताराग्रहनक्षत्रं सचन्द्रं समहाग्रहम्

nagaryā viṭapāvatyā gandharvabhavanottamaiḥ
satārāgrahanakṣatraṃ sacandraṃ samahāgraham

SYNONYMS

nabhaḥsthalam: the sky above | bhramatīva: appeared whirled around | nikumbha parigha āghūrṇam: in the toss of Nikumbha's club | viṭapāvatyā nagaryā: as though Alaka the city | gandharva bhavanottamaiḥ: with the palaces of Gandharvas | (performing rapid revolutions) sa tārāgrahanakṣatram sacandram samahāgraham: and moon and the stars and the planets |

TRANSLATION

The sky above appeared whirled around in the toss of Nikumbha's club, as though Alaka the City with the palaces of Gandharvas performed rapid revolutions and the moon and the stars and the planets joining the rotating race.

VERSE 9

दुरासदश्च संजज्ञे परिघाभरणप्रभः

durāsadaśca saṃjajñe parighābharaṇaprabhaḥ

SYNONYMS

nikumbhāgniḥ: the hot tempered fire of nikumbha | parighābharaṇaprabhaḥ: which had club and ornaments for its flame | samjañe: became | krodhenahanaḥ: and his fury as its face | durāsadaḥ: dangerous to be approached | utthitaḥ yugāntāgniḥ iva: like the fire risen at the time of dissolution of the world. |

TRANSLATION

The hot tempered fire of Nikumbha, which had his club and ornaments for its flame and his fury as its fuel, became dangerous to be approached, like the fire rising at the time of dissolution of the world.

VERSE 10

राक्षसा वानराश्चापि न शेकुः स्पन्दितुं भयात्

rākṣasā vānarāścāpi na śekuḥ spandituṃ bhayāt

SYNONYMS

rākṣasāḥ: the demons | vānaraścāpi: and even the monkeys | bhayāt: out of fear | na śekuh: were unable | spanditum: to move | balī: the strong | hunumāt tu: Hanuma for his part | tasthau: stood (alone) | uraḥ vivṛtya: with his breast bared (to the fury of the attack) | pramukhataḥ: in front (of Nikumbha). |

TRANSLATION

The demons and the monkeys too, out of fear, were unable even to make the slightest movement. The mighty Hanuma, on his part, stood alone among them, with his breast bared to the fury of the attack, in front of Nikumbha.

VERSE 11

परिघोपमबाहुस्तु परिघं भास्करप्रभम्

parighopamabāhustu parighaṃ bhāskaraprabham

SYNONYMS

balī: the strong Nikumbha | parighopama bāhuḥ: with his arms as strong as his club | pātayāmāsa: hurled | parigham: his club | bhāskara prabham: with a splendour of the sun | vakṣasi: on the breast | tasya balavataḥ: of that mighty Hanuma. |

TRANSLATION

The strong Nikumbha, with his arms as strong as his club, hurled his club having sun-like splendour, on the breast of that mighty Hanuma.

VERSE 12

स्थिरे तस्योरसि व्यूढे परिघः शतधा कृतः

sthire tasyorasi vyūḍhe parighaḥ śatadhā kṛtaḥ

SYNONYMS

parighaḥ: the (titanic) club | tasya urasi: that fell on his breast | sthire: which was rock-like | vyūḍhe: and wide | sahasā: at once | kṛtaḥ śatadhā: shattered into hundreds of fragments | ulkāśatamiva: like hundreds of meteors | vikīryamāṇaḥ: shattered | ambare: into the sky. |

TRANSLATION

The titanic club, which fell on the wide and rock-like chest of Hanuma, at once shattered into hundreds of fragments, like hundreds of meteors shattering into the sky.

VERSE 13

स तु तेन प्रहारेण विचचाल महाकपिः

sa tu tena prahāreṇa vicacāla mahākapiḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ mahākapiḥ: that Hanuma | samādhūtaḥ: struck | tena: by that | prahāreṇa: blow | parigheṇa: of the club | vicacāla: was unmoved | acalaḥ yathā: like a mountain | bhūmicale: in an earthquake. |

TRANSLATION

That Hanuma, struck by that blow of the club, was unmoved like a mountain in an earthquake.

VERSE 14

स तथाभिहतस्तेन हनुमान् पवगोत्तमः

sa tathābhihatastena hanumān pavagottamaḥ

SYNONYMS

tathā: thus | abhihataḥ: struck | tena: by him | saḥ atmahābalaḥ hanuman: that mighty Hanuma | plavagottamaḥ: the foremost of monkeys | samvartayāmāsa: clenched | muṣṭim: his fist | balena: forcibly. |

TRANSLATION

Thus struck by him, the mighty Hanuma the monkey-chief clenched his fist forcibly.

VERSE 15

तमुद्यम्य महातेजा निकुम्भोरसि वीर्यवान्

tamudyamya mahātejā nikumbhorasi vīryavān

SYNONYMS

mahātejāḥ: the greatly splendoured | vīryavān: powerful | vegavān: and swift | vāyuvikramaḥ: Hanuma | udyamya: lifting | tam: that fist | abhicikṣepa: struck it against | nikumbhorasi: Nikumbha's breast | vegena: with force. |

TRANSLATION

The greatly splendoured, powerful and swift Hanuma, with the violence of the wind-god, his father, lifting that fist, struck it against, Nikumbha's breast with force.

VERSE 16

तत्र पुस्फोट वर्मास्य प्रसुस्राव च शोणितम्
मुष्टिना तेन संजज्ञे मेघे विद्युदिवोत्थिता

tatra pusphoṭa varmāsya prasusrāva ca śoṇitam
muṣṭinā tena saṃjajñe meghe vidyudivotthitā

SYNONYMS

tena muṣṭinā: by that fist | tatra: then | asya varma: his armour | pusphoṭa: got split up | śoṇitamca: and red blood | prasusrāva: profusely oozed out | meghe iva: as a black cloud | samñe utthitā: streaked suddenly | vidyut: with (fierce) lightning. |

TRANSLATION

By the blow of that fist there, his armour got split up and red blood profusely oozed out, as a black cloud streaked suddenly with fierce lightning.

VERSE 17

स तु तेन प्रहारेण निकुम्भो विचचाल ह
स्वस्थश्चापि निजग्राह हनूमन्तं महाबलम्

sa tu tena prahāreṇa nikumbho vicacāla ha
svasthaścāpi nijagrāha hanūmantaṃ mahābalam

SYNONYMS

tena prahāreṇa: by that blow | saḥ: that | nikumbhaḥ: Nikumbha | vicacālaha: was unmoved | svasthaścāpi: and even recovered | nijagrāha: and grasped | mahābalam: the mighty | hanūmantam: Hanuma. |

TRANSLATION

But, by that blow, Nikumbha was unmoved, recovered soon and grasped the unwieldy bulk of Hanuma.

VERSE 18

चुक्रुशुश्च तदा संख्ये भीमं लङ्कानिवासिनः
निकुम्भेनोद्यतं दृष्ट्वा हनूमन्तं महाबलम्

cukruśuśca tadā saṃkhye bhīmaṃ laṅkānivāsinaḥ
nikumbhenodyataṃ dṛṣṭvā hanūmantaṃ mahābalam

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | mahābalam: the mighty | hanūmantam: Hanuma | udyatam: lifted off (the ground) | samkhye: in battle | laṅkānivasasinaḥ: the demons | tadā: then | cukruśuḥ: roared | bhīmam: terribly. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing the mighty Hanuma lifted off the ground in battle, loud roar of exultant joy rose from the ranks of demons.

VERSE 19

स तथा ह्रियमाणो।अपि हनुमांस्तेन रक्षसा
आजघानानिलसुतो वज्रकल्पेन मुष्टिना

sa tathā hriyamāṇo|api hanumāṃstena rakṣasā
ājaghānānilasuto vajrakalpena muṣṭinā

SYNONYMS

saḥ hriyamāṇaḥ api: eventhough he was being carried off | tathā: in that way | tena rakṣasā: by that demon | hanuman: Hanuma | anila sutaḥ: the son of wind-god | ājaghāna: struck (him) | muṣṭinā: with his fist | vajrakalpena: which was like a thunder-bolt. |

TRANSLATION

Eventhough he was being carried off in that way by that demon, Hanuma the son of wind-god, struck him with his thunderbolt-like fist.

VERSE 20

आत्मानं मोक्षयित्वाथ क्षितावभ्यवपद्यत
हनूमानुन्ममाथाशु निकुम्भं मारुतात्मजः

ātmānaṃ mokṣayitvātha kṣitāvabhyavapadyata
hanūmānunmamāthāśu nikumbhaṃ mārutātmajaḥ

SYNONYMS

mokṣayitvā ātmānam: freeing himself (from Nikumbha) | hanuman: Hanuma | mārutātmajaḥ: the son of wind-god | atha: then | abhyapadyata: threw him down | kṣitau: on the ground | āśu: and quickly | unmamātha nikumbham: treated Nikumbha with blows. |

TRANSLATION

Freeing himself from Nikumbha, Hanuma the son of wind-god then threw him down on the ground and treated him with blows.

VERSE 21

निक्षिप्य परमायत्तो निकुम्भं निष्पिपेष च
उत्पत्य चास्य वेगेन पपातोरसि वेगवान्

nikṣipya paramāyatto nikumbhaṃ niṣpipeṣa ca
utpatya cāsya vegena papātorasi vegavān

SYNONYMS

nikṣipya: throwing down | nikumbham: Nikumbha | vegena: by main force | paramāyattaḥ: with a supreme effort | papāta: descended on him | utpatya: leaping | asya urasi: on his chest | niṣpi peṣaca vegavān: and pounded it mercilessly. |

TRANSLATION

Throwing down Nikumbha by main force and with a supreme effort, Hanuma descended on him, leaped on his chest and pounded it mercilessly.

VERSE 22

परिगृह्य च बाहुभ्यां परिवृत्य शिरोधराम्
उत्पाटयामास शिरो भैरवं नदतो महत्

parigṛhya ca bāhubhyāṃ parivṛtya śirodharām
utpāṭayāmāsa śiro bhairavaṃ nadato mahat

SYNONYMS

bāhūbhyām: with both hands | parigṛhya: catching | śirodharām: the enemy's neck | parivṛtya: twisted it about | utpāṭayāmāsa: and tore off | mahat śiraḥ: his huge head | bhairavam nadatam: while he was horribly roaring. |

TRANSLATION

Then with both hands, he caught the enemy's neck, twisted it about and tore off his huge head, while Nikumbha was horribly roaring.

VERSE 23

अथ निनदति सादिते निकुम्भे
पवनसुतेन रणे बभूव युद्धम्
दशरथसुतराक्षसेन्द्रसून्वो
र्भृशतरमागतरोषयोः सुभीमम्

atha ninadati sādite nikumbhe
pavanasutena raṇe babhūva yuddham
daśarathasutarākṣasendrasūnvo
rbhṛśataramāgataroṣayoḥ subhīmam

SYNONYMS

atha: then | ninadati nikumbha: while the roaring Nikumbha | sādite: was killed | raṇe: in battle | pavanasutena: by Hanuma | babhūva: there ensued | bhṛśataram: and exceedingly | subhīmam: terrific | yuddham: struggle | daśarathasutaḥ: between Rama | āgata roṣayoḥ: the enraged | rākṣasendra sūnvoḥ: and Makaraksha |

TRANSLATION

Then, while the roaring Nikumbha was killed in battle by Hanuma, there ensued an exceedingly terrific struggle between the enraged Rama and Makaraksha, son of Khara, a ruler of demons.

VERSE 24

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये युद्धकांडे सप्तसप्ततितमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe vālmīkīye ādikāvye yuddhakāṃḍe saptasaptatitamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

nikumbhasya jive vyapete: when it was clear that Nikumbha had expired | plavaṇgāḥ: the monkeys | nineduḥ: shouted | hṛṣṭāḥ: with glee | diśaḥ: the quarters | sasvanuḥ ca: thundered with satisfaction | urvī: the earth | ccālena: rocked with joy | dyouḥ: the heaven | papātena: appeared to crumble | bhayam: and fear | aviveśaca: seized | rākṣasānām balam: the army of demons. |

TRANSLATION

When it was clear that Nikumbha had expired, the monkeys shouted with glee, the quarters thundered with satisfaction, the earth rocked with joy, the heaven appeared to crumble and fear seized the army of demons.
