Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

तस्य राक्षसराजस्य निशम्य परिदेवितम्
कुम्भकर्णो बभा षेदं वचनम् प्रजहास च

tasya rākṣasarājasya niśamya paridevitam
kumbhakarṇo babhā ṣedaṃ vacanam prajahāsa ca

SYNONYMS

niśamya: hearing | paridevitam: the lamentation | tasya rākṣasarājasya: of that Ravana | kumbhakarṇaḥ: Kumbhakarna | babhāṣe: spoke | idam vacanam: these words | prajahāsaca: after laughing at a full volume. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the lamentation of Ravana, Kumbhakarna laughed at a full volume and spoke as follows:

VERSE 2

दृष्टो दोषो हि यो।अस्माभिः पुरा मन्त्रविनिर्णये
हितेष्वनभियुक्तेन सो।अयमासादितस्त्वया

dṛṣṭo doṣo hi yo|asmābhiḥ purā mantravinirṇaye
hiteṣvanabhiyuktena so|ayamāsāditastvayā

SYNONYMS

yaḥ: which | doṣaḥ: bad consequence | dṛṣtaḥ: was imagined | asmābhiḥ: by us | mantranirṇaye: at a settlement of our counsel | purā: earlier | saḥ ayam: this same one | āsāditaḥ: is obtained | tvayā: by you. | hiteṣu anabhiyuktena: due to the disregard of well-wishers |

TRANSLATION

"The same bad consequence, which was imagined by us earlier while taking the final decision after our consultation, is faced by you now, due to your utter disregard of the words spoken by your well-wishers."

VERSE 3

श्रीघ्रम् खल्वभ्युपेतम् त्वाम् फलम् पापस्य कर्मणः
निरयेष्वेव पतनम् यथा दुष्कृतकर्मणः

śrīghram khalvabhyupetam tvām phalam pāpasya karmaṇaḥ
nirayeṣveva patanam yathā duṣkṛtakarmaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

yathā: how | duṣkṛtakarmaṇaḥ: a performer of wicked deeds | patanameva: indeed falls | nirayeṣu: into hells | phalam pāpasya karmaṇaḥ: a punishment for your sinful act | upetam khalu: has indeed reached | tvām: you | śīghram: fast. |

TRANSLATION

"How a doer of wicked deeds indeed falls into damnation, so also a punishment for your sinful act has indeed reached your fast."

VERSE 4

प्रथमम् वै महाराज कृत्यमेतदचिन्तितम्
केवलम् वीर्यदर्पेणनानुबन्धो विचिन्तितः

prathamam vai mahārāja kṛtyametadacintitam
kevalam vīryadarpeṇanānubandho vicintitaḥ

SYNONYMS

mahārāja: O emperor! | etat: this | kṛtyam: course of action | acintitam: was not expected | prathamam: at first | anubandhaḥ: the consequence | na vicintitaḥ: was not conceived | kevalam vīrya darpeṇa: only because of your arrogance of power. |

TRANSLATION

"O emperor! This course of action was not excepted by you at first. You did not conceive this consequence, only because of your sheer arrogance of power."

VERSE 5

यः पश्चात्पूर्वकार्याणि कुर्यादैश्वर्यमास्थितः
पूर्वं चोत्तरकार्याणि न स वेद नयानयौ

yaḥ paścātpūrvakāryāṇi kuryādaiśvaryamāsthitaḥ
pūrvaṃ cottarakāryāṇi na sa veda nayānayau

SYNONYMS

yaḥ: he who | āsthitaḥ: abiding in | aiśvaryam: power | kurvāt: performs | purvakāryāṇi: duties to be done at first | paścāt: at a later stage | uttarakāryāṇi: and duties to be done later | pūrvamca: at the first instance | saḥ: he | na veda: does not know | nayānayau: the right course and the wrong course. |

TRANSLATION

"He who, abiding in power, performs duties to be done earlier at a later stage and duties to be done later, at an early stage, does not know what is a right course and what is a wrong course."

VERSE 6

देशकालविहीनानि कर्माणि विपरीतवत्
क्रियमाणानि दुष्यन्ति हवीम्ष्यप्रयतेष्विव

deśakālavihīnāni karmāṇi viparītavat
kriyamāṇāni duṣyanti havīmṣyaprayateṣviva

SYNONYMS

karmāṇi: action | kriyamāṇāni: done | deśakāla vihīnāni: regardless of space and time | duṣyanti: get spoiled | havīmṣiva: like offering oblations | aprayateṣu: without making the fire well-prepared. |

TRANSLATION

"Action done perversely, regardless of space and time, get spoiled like offering oblations without properly making the fire well-prepared."

VERSE 7

त्रयाणाम् पञ्चधा योगम् कर्मणाम् यः प्रपद्यते
सचिवैः समयम् कृत्वा स सम्यगभिवर्तते

trayāṇām pañcadhā yogam karmaṇām yaḥ prapadyate
sacivaiḥ samayam kṛtvā sa samyagabhivartate

SYNONYMS

yaḥ: he | kṛtvā: acts | samām: according to an agreement | sacivaiḥ: with his counsellors | prapadyate: attains | trayānām: three types | karmaṇām: of duties | yogam: by harnessing | paṅcadhā: five types of means | sah: he | vartate: abides | samyak: well | pathi: in a (right) course. |

TRANSLATION

"He, who acts according to an agreement done with his counsellors, considering three types of duties*, by harassing five types of means**, moves along a right course."

PURPORT

*1). Conclusion of peace through conciliation. 2) acceptance of allegiance through gift. 3) invasion, as a method of coercion. **1) The method of initiating an actions. 2) Personality and material to be worked upon. 3) Time and place of action. 4) Provision against mischance and 5) chances of success.
VERSE 8

यथागमम् च यो राजा समयम् च चिकीर्षति
बुध्यते सचिवैर्बुद्ध्या सुहृदश्चानुपश्यति

yathāgamam ca yo rājā samayam ca cikīrṣati
budhyate sacivairbuddhyā suhṛdaścānupaśyati

SYNONYMS

yaḥ: which | rājā: king | cikīrṣati: intends to do | samayamca: an agreement | yathāgamanam ca: according to law | budhyate: and understands | buddhyā: through intellect | sacivaiḥ: and counsellors | anupaśyati: and discovers | suhṛdaśca: through his friends |

TRANSLATION

"A king who wishes to execute am agreement as per law, understands it through his own intellect as well as the counsellors and discovers it through his friends, is on a right course."

VERSE 9

धर्ममर्थम् च कामम् च सर्वान्वा रक्षसाम् पते
भजते पुरुषः काले त्रिणि द्वन्द्वानि वा पुनः

dharmamartham ca kāmam ca sarvānvā rakṣasām pate
bhajate puruṣaḥ kāle triṇi dvandvāni vā punaḥ

SYNONYMS

rakṣasāmpate: O king of demons! | puruṣaḥ: a man | bhajate: resorts to | dharmam: virtue | artham ca: or wealth | kāmam ca: or pleasure | sarvānvā: or all | trīṇi: three | punaḥ dvandvānivā: or again a twin combination of virtue and wealth or virtue and pleasure or wealth and pleasure | kāle: according to suitability of time. |

TRANSLATION

"O king of demons! A man resorts to virtue or worldly gain or pleasure or all the three together or a twin combination of virtue and worldly gain or virtue and pleasure or worldly gain and pleasure or worldly gain and pleasure, according to an appointed time*."

PURPORT

*The scriptures lay down that virtue should be pursued in the morning, worldly gain in the afternoon and sensuous pleasure at night. As an alternative, one is called upon to pursue
VERSE 10

त्रिषु चैतेषु यच्छ्रेष्ठम् श्रुत्वा तन्नावबुध्यते
राजा वा राजमात्रो वा व्यर्थम् तस्य बहु श्रुतम्

triṣu caiteṣu yacchreṣṭham śrutvā tannāvabudhyate
rājā vā rājamātro vā vyartham tasya bahu śrutam

SYNONYMS

rājāvā: which sovereign king | rājamātro vā: or a crown price | śrutvā: having heard | yat: which one | śreṣṭham: is the best | eteṣu triṣu: out of these three | tat na avabudhyate: does not keep it in mind | tasya: his | bahuśrutam: extensive learning | vyartham: is in vain. |

TRANSLATION

"That sovereign king or crown prince, who, having heard which one is the best out of these three but does not keep it in mind, his extensive learning would be in vain."

VERSE 11

उपप्रदानम् सान्त्वम् च भेदम् काले च विक्रमम्
योगम् च रक्षसाम् श्रेष्ठ तावुभौ च नयानयौ

upapradānam sāntvam ca bhedam kāle ca vikramam
yogam ca rakṣasām śreṣṭha tāvubhau ca nayānayau

SYNONYMS

12| śreṣṭha rākṣasām: O the foremost of demons! | yaḥ: whoever | sammantrya: deliberates | sacivaiḥ saha: with his counsellors | niṣeveta: and resorts to | upapradānam: an act of giving away | sāntvam ca: or conciliation | bhedamca: or sowing dissension | kāle: at the right time | vikramamca: or exhibits valour | yogamca: or resorts to them al together | ubhau tau: or takes recourse to both | nayānayau: right action and the reverse of it | dharmārtha kāmān: or pursues virtue or worldly gain or pleasure | saḥ ātmavān: that intelligent man | nāpūyāt: never confronts | vyasanam: a misfortune | loke: in the world. |

TRANSLATION

"O the foremost of demons! Whosoever deliberates with his counsellors and resorts to an act of with his counsellors and resorts to an act of bestowing gifts or conciliation or sowing dissension at appropriate occasion or exhibits valour or resorts to them all together or takes recourse to both right action and the reverse of it at the right time or pursues virtue or worldly gain or pleasure at the appropriate time, that intelligent person never confronts a misfortune in this world."

VERSE 13

हितानुबन्धमालोक्य कुर्यात्कार्यमिहात्मनः
राजा सहार्थतत्त्वज्ञैः सचिवैर्बुद्धिजीविभिः

hitānubandhamālokya kuryātkāryamihātmanaḥ
rājā sahārthatattvajñaiḥ sacivairbuddhijīvibhiḥ

SYNONYMS

rājā: a king | kuryāt: has to do | kāryam: an act | iha: here | ālokya: looking into | ātmanaḥ hitānubandham: his welfare as a consequence | sacivaiḥ saha: along with his counsellors | buddhi jīvibhiḥ: subsisting by their intelligence | artha tattvañaiḥ: and understanding the true state of the things. |

TRANSLATION

"A sovereign has to do an act here, looking into his welfare as a consequence along with his counsellors who make their subsistence by their intelligence and who understand the true state of the things."

VERSE 14

अनभिज्ज़्नाय शास्त्रार्थान् पुरुषाः पशुबुद्धयः
प्रागल्भ्याद्वक्त्मिच्छिन्ति मन्त्रेष्वभ्यन्तरीकृताः

anabhijznāya śāstrārthān puruṣāḥ paśubuddhayaḥ
prāgalbhyādvaktmicchinti mantreṣvabhyantarīkṛtāḥ

SYNONYMS

puruṣāḥ: men | paśubuddhayaḥ: with brutal ideas | abhyantarīkṛtāḥ: initiated in | mantreṣu: consultations | icchanti: desire | vaktum: to tell | prāgalbhyāt: haughty things | anabhiñāya: without knowing | śāstrārthān: the precepts of the scriptures. |

TRANSLATION

"Men with brutal ideas, who are initiated in discussions, aspire to tell haughty things, without fully knowing the precepts of the scriptures."

VERSE 15

अशास्त्रविदुषाम् तेषाम् कार्यम् नाभिहितं वचः
अर्थशास्त्रानभिज्ञानाम् विपुलाम् श्रियमिच्छताम्

aśāstraviduṣām teṣām kāryam nābhihitaṃ vacaḥ
arthaśāstrānabhijñānām vipulām śriyamicchatām

SYNONYMS

vacaḥ: the words | abhihitam: spoken by | teṣām: them | aśāstra viduṣām: who do not know the scriptures | artha śāstrānabhiñānām: who do not recollect the books dealing with practical life | icchātām: and who covet for | vipulām: abundant | śriyam: wealth | na kāryam: are not to be implemented. |

TRANSLATION

"The words spoken by those who did not know the scriptures, who do not recollect the books dealing with practical life and who covet for abundant wealth are not to be implemented."

VERSE 16

अहितम् च हिताकारम् धार्ष्ट्याज्जल्पन्ति ये नराः
अवश्यम् मन्त्रबाह्यास्ते कर्तव्याः कृत्यदूषकाः

ahitam ca hitākāram dhārṣṭyājjalpanti ye narāḥ
avaśyam mantrabāhyāste kartavyāḥ kṛtyadūṣakāḥ

SYNONYMS

ye: whoever | narāḥ: men | jalpanti: talk | dhārṣṭyāt: with audacity | aitam: inimical things | hitākāram: in a friendly form | kartavyāḥ: are to be kept | mantrabāhyāḥ: out of deliberations | te: (as) they | avaśyam: certainly | kṛtya dūṣakāḥ: spoil the work to be done. |

TRANSLATION

"Those men who talk with audacity, some inimical things in a friendly way, are to be kept out of deliberations, as they certainly spoil the work to be done."

VERSE 17

विनाशयन्तो भर्तारम् सहिताः शत्रुभिर्बुधैः
विपरीतानि कृत्यानि कारयन्तीह मन्त्रिणः

vināśayanto bhartāram sahitāḥ śatrubhirbudhaiḥ
viparītāni kṛtyāni kārayantīha mantriṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

iha: here | mantriṇaḥ: (some) counsellors | sahitaḥ: joined with | budhaiḥ: learned | śatrubhiḥ: adversaries | vināśayantaḥ: spoil | bhartāram: their king | kārayanti: and make them do | viparītāni kṛtyāni: wrong deeds. |

TRANSLATION

"Some counsellors, colluding with some learned adversaries, spoil their king and make them do wrong deeds."

VERSE 18

तान् भर्ता मित्रसम्काशानमित्रान् मन्त्रनिर्णये
व्यवहारेण जानीयात्सचिवानुपसम्हितान्

tān bhartā mitrasamkāśānamitrān mantranirṇaye
vyavahāreṇa jānīyātsacivānupasamhitān

SYNONYMS

bhartā: the king | jānīyāt: should make out | vyavahāreṇa: during deals | mantra nirṇaye: when a final settlement is taken after deliberation | tān: such of those | sacivān: counsellors | upa samhitān: who were transformed by bribery and other things | amitrān: (those) enemies | mitrasamkāśān: looking like friends. |

TRANSLATION

"The king should make-out those ministers who have been transformed by the enemy to their side (through bribery and other things) and are enemies though looking like friends, through their conduct when a final decision is being taken after deliberation."

VERSE 19

चपलस्येह कृत्यानि सहसानुप्रधावतः
चिद्रमन्ये प्रपद्यन्ते क्रौञ्चस्य खमिव द्विजाः

capalasyeha kṛtyāni sahasānupradhāvataḥ
cidramanye prapadyante krauñcasya khamiva dvijāḥ

SYNONYMS

anye: outsiders | prapadyante: find out | capalasya: the fickleness (of a ruler) anupradhaavataH = who is led away by false appearances | sahasā: and quickly | kṛtyāni: performs the acts | dvijāḥ iva: as birds | kham: (discover) the hole (made by the arrow of Skanda | krouncasya: in the Krauncha mountain. |

TRANSLATION

"Outsiders find out the fickleness of a ruler, who is led away by false appearances and quickly performs the acts, as birds discover the hole (made by the arrow of Skanda, the commander-in-chief of gods) in the Kruancha mountain."

VERSE 20

यो हि शत्रुमवज्ञाय नात्मानमभिरक्षति
अवाप्नोति हि सो।अनर्थान् स्थानाच्च व्यवरोप्यते

yo hi śatrumavajñāya nātmānamabhirakṣati
avāpnoti hi so|anarthān sthānācca vyavaropyate

SYNONYMS

yaḥ: He who | avañāya: disregards | śatrum: an enemy | nābhirakṣati: and does not protect | ātmānam: himself | saḥ: he | avāproti hi: indeed faces | anarthān: disappointing occurrences | vyavaropyate: and would be removed | sthānāt: from his position. |

TRANSLATION

"A king who disregards an enemy and does not protect himself, indeed faces disappointing occurrences and would be removed from his position."

VERSE 21

यदुक्तमिह ते पूर्वम् क्रियतामनुजेन च
तदेव नो हितम् वाक्यम् यदिच्छसि च तत्कुरु

yaduktamiha te pūrvam kriyatāmanujena ca
tadeva no hitam vākyam yadicchasi ca tatkuru

SYNONYMS

yat: whatever | uktam: was tendered | anujena: by Vibhishana | pūrvam: earlier | kriyatām: let it be done | tat vākyameva: that advice alone | hitam: is beneficial | naḥ: to us | kuru: (otherwise) do | tat: it | icchasi: you wish. |

TRANSLATION

"That advice which was tendered to you earlier by vibhishana is beneficial to us. Do whatever you wish to do."

VERSE 22

तत्तु श्रुत्वा दशग्रीवः कुम्भकर्णस्य भाषितम्
भ्रुकुटिम् चैव संचक्रे क्रुद्धश्चैनमभाषत

tattu śrutvā daśagrīvaḥ kumbhakarṇasya bhāṣitam
bhrukuṭim caiva saṃcakre kruddhaścainamabhāṣata

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: on hearing | tat bhāṣitam: those words | kumbhakarṇasya: of Kumbhakarna | daśagrīvaḥ tu: Ravana | samcakre: twisted | bhrukuṭim: his eye-brows | abhāṣata: and spoke | enam: this | kruddhaśeha: with anger. |

TRANSLATION

On hearing those words of Kumbhakarna, Ravana, on his part, twisted his eye-brows in anger and spoke the following words:

VERSE 23

मन्यो गुरुरिवाचार्यः कि माम् त्वमनुशाससे
किमेवम् वाक्ष्रमम् कृत्वा काले युक्तम् विधीयताम्

manyo gururivācāryaḥ ki mām tvamanuśāsase
kimevam vākṣramam kṛtvā kāle yuktam vidhīyatām

SYNONYMS

kim: what is the use | tvam: are you | anuśāsate: advising | mām: me | mānyaḥ iva: like a venerable | guruḥ ācāryaḥ: great teacher? | kṛtvā: in getting | vākśramam: weariness of speech? | yuktam: let a befitting work | kāle: appropriate to the time | vidhīyatām: be done. |

TRANSLATION

"Why are you advising me like a venerable great teacher? What is the use in getting wearied of your speech? Let a work, most befitting of time, be performed."

VERSE 24

विभ्रमाच्चित्तमोहाद्वा बलवीर्याश्रयेण वा
नाभिपन्नमिदानीम् यद्व्यर्था तस्य पुनः कथा

vibhramāccittamohādvā balavīryāśrayeṇa vā
nābhipannamidānīm yadvyarthā tasya punaḥ kathā

SYNONYMS

idānīm: now | vyarthā: it is a waste | punaḥ kathā: to tell again | tasya: of that | yat: which | nābhipannam: was wrongly done | vibramāt: by mistake | cittamohādvā: or by illusion of mind | balavīryāśrayeṇa vā: or by taking shelter in strength or prowess. |

TRANSLATION

"Now, it is a waste to tell again of that act which was wrongly done before, either by mistake or by an illusion of mind or by taking shelter in strength and prowess."

VERSE 25

अस्मिन् काले तु यद्युक्तम् तदिदानीम् विचिन्त्यताम्
गतम् तु नानुशोचन्ति गतम् तु गतमेव हि

asmin kāle tu yadyuktam tadidānīm vicintyatām
gatam tu nānuśocanti gatam tu gatameva hi

SYNONYMS

yat: (Let) whatever | yuktam: be appropriate | asmin: at this | kāle: point of time | vicintyatām: be thought of | idānīm: now | na anuśocanti: (wise men) do not repent over | gatam: the past | gatam tu: past still | gatameva hi: is indeed the past. |

TRANSLATION

"Let whatever be appropriate at this moment be thought of now. Wise men do not repent over the past. Past is indeed but the past."

VERSE 26

ममापनयजं दुःखम् विक्रमेण समीकुरु
यदि खल्वस्ति मे स्नेहो विक्रमम् वाधिगच्छसि

mamāpanayajaṃ duḥkham vikrameṇa samīkuru
yadi khalvasti me sneho vikramam vādhigacchasi

SYNONYMS

snehaḥ asti khalu yadi: If you have affection indeed | me: for me | adhigacchasi vā: or if you discover | vikramam: (your own) prowess | matam yadi: and if you think fit | etat: this | te hṛdi: in your heart | mama: my | kāryam: work | kāryatamam: very much is to be done | samīkuru: nullify | vikrameṇa: with your prowess | duḥkham: the hardship | mama apanayajam: born out of my wicked conduct. |

TRANSLATION

"If you have affection indeed for me or if you discover your own prowess and if you think it fit in your heart that my work is to be done very much, you nullify the hardship, born out of my wicked conduct, by your prowess."

VERSE 27

स सुहृद्यो विपन्नार्थम् दीनमभ्युपपद्यते

sa suhṛdyo vipannārtham dīnamabhyupapadyate

SYNONYMS

yaḥ: he | abhyupadyate: rescues | dīnam: an afflicted soul | vipannārtham: whose fortune is ruined | saḥ: he | suhṛt: is the real friend | upakalpate: is ready at hand | sāhāyyāya: to help | apanīteṣu: those who have deviated from the right course | bandhuḥ: is kinsman. |

TRANSLATION

"He who rescues an afflicted soul, whose fortune is ruined, he is the real friend. He who is ready at hand to help those who have deviated from the right course, is a kinsman."

VERSE 28

तमथैवम् ब्रुवाणम् स वचनम् धीरदारुणम्

tamathaivam bruvāṇam sa vacanam dhīradāruṇam

SYNONYMS

atha: thereupon | vacanam: the words | dhīradāruṇam: which were deeply harsh | evam: thus | bruvāṇam: spoken | tam: by Ravana | viñāya: and understanding | ayam iti: that he | ruṣṭaḥ: is enraged | saḥ: Kumbhakarna | uvāca ha: spoke | śanaiḥ: slowly | ślakṣṇam: as and smoothly. |

TRANSLATION

Thereupon, hearing those deeply harsh words spoken by Ravana and understanding that he is quite enraged, Kumbhakarna spoke slowly and smoothly.

VERSE 29

अतीव हि समालक्ष्य भ्रातरम् क्षुभितेन्द्रियम्

atīva hi samālakṣya bhrātaram kṣubhitendriyam

SYNONYMS

samālakṣya: observing | bhrātaram: that his brother | atīva: is highly | kṣubhitendriyam: perturbed and excited of is senses | kumbhakarṇaḥ: Kumbhakarna | pari sāntvayan: consoling (him) | babhāṣe: spoke | vākyam: the following words | śanaiḥ: gently. |

TRANSLATION

Observing that his brother is highly perturbed and excited of his senses, Kumbhakarna, while consoling him, gently spoke the following words:

VERSE 30

शृणु राजन्नवहितो मम वाक्यमरिंदम

śṛṇu rājannavahito mama vākyamariṃdama

SYNONYMS

31| rājan: O king | śruṇu: listen to | mama: my | vākyam: words | avahitaḥ: attentively | rākṣasarājendra: O emperor of demons! | alam: enough | upapadya: of obtaining | samtāpam: the anguish | samparityajya: abandoning | roṣamca: your anger | arhasi: you ought | bhavitum: to be svasthaH = your normal self. |

TRANSLATION

"O king, the annihilator of adversaries! Listen to my words attentively. O emperor of demons! Enough of your giving way to the anguish. Abandoning your anger completely, you ought to be your normal self again."

VERSE 32

नैतन्मनसि कर्तव्यम् मयि जीवति पार्थिव
तमहम् नाशयिष्यामि यत्कृते परितप्येते

naitanmanasi kartavyam mayi jīvati pārthiva
tamaham nāśayiṣyāmi yatkṛte paritapyete

SYNONYMS

pārthiva: O king | mayi jīvati: until I live | etat: this | na kartavyam: is not to be formed | manasi: in your mind | aham: I | nāśayiṣyāmi: shall destroy | tam: him | yatkṛte: for whose account | paritapyate: you are feeling anguished. |

TRANSLATION

"O king! Until I live, this idea should not be formed in your mind. I shall destroy him, for whose account, you are feeling anguished."

VERSE 33

अवश्यम् च हितम् वाच्यम् सर्वावस्थाम् गतम् मया
बन्धुभावादभिहितम् भ्रातृस्नेहाच्च पार्थिव

avaśyam ca hitam vācyam sarvāvasthām gatam mayā
bandhubhāvādabhihitam bhrātṛsnehācca pārthiva

TRANSLATION

"O king! In whatever situation you are placed, I have to give certainly a good advice to you. I gave this advice, because of our relation and brotherly affection."

VERSE 34

सदृशम् यच्च काले।अस्मिन् कर्तुम् स्नेहेन बन्धुना
शत्रूणाम् कदनम् पश्य क्रियमाणम् मया रणे

sadṛśam yacca kāle|asmin kartum snehena bandhunā
śatrūṇām kadanam paśya kriyamāṇam mayā raṇe

SYNONYMS

asmin kāle: at this juncture | yat: whatever | sadṛśam: is fit | kartum: to be done | bandhunā: by a relative | snehena: by way of affection | kriyamāṇam: is being done | mayā: by me | raṇe: in battle | śatrūṇām kadanam: the destruction of adversaries | paśya: see it. |

TRANSLATION

"See that which is to be done and this juncture, out of affection by a brother, viz. the destruction of adversaries in battle, will be done by me."

VERSE 35

अद्य पश्य महाबाहो मया समरमूर्धनि
हते रामे सहभ्रात्रा द्रवन्तीम् हरिवाहिनीम्

adya paśya mahābāho mayā samaramūrdhani
hate rāme sahabhrātrā dravantīm harivāhinīm

SYNONYMS

paśya: see | mahābāho: O mighty armed king! | dravantīm: the fleeing | harivāhinīm: army of monkeys | adya: today | rāme: with Rama | bhrātrāsaha: along with his brother | hate: being killed | mayā: by me | samara ūrdhani: in the forefront of battle-field. |

TRANSLATION

"See today, O mighty armed king, the fleeing army of monkeys and Rama along with his brother being killed by me in the fore-front of the battle-field."

VERSE 36

अद्य रामस्य तद्दृष्ट्वा मयानीतम् रणाच्छिरः
सुखि भव महाबाहो सीता भवतु दुःखिता

adya rāmasya taddṛṣṭvā mayānītam raṇācchiraḥ
sukhi bhava mahābāho sītā bhavatu duḥkhitā

SYNONYMS

mahābāho: O the mighty armed! | dṛṣṭvā: On seeing | tat: that | rāmasya śiraḥ: Rama's head | ānītam: being brought | adya: today | raṇāt: from the battle | bhava sukhī: become pleased | sītā: (Let) Seetha | bhavatu: be | duḥkhitā: unhappy. |

TRANSLATION

"O the mighty armed! Be happy by seeing that Rama's head, which I shall bring today from the battle. Let Seetha be unhappy."

VERSE 37

अद्य रामस्य पश्यन्तु निधनम् सुमहत्प्रियम्
लङ्कायाम् राक्षसाः सर्वे ये ते निहतबान्धवाः

adya rāmasya paśyantu nidhanam sumahatpriyam
laṅkāyām rākṣasāḥ sarve ye te nihatabāndhavāḥ

SYNONYMS

ye: which | rākṣasāḥ: demons | laṅkāyām: in Lanka | nihata bāndhavāḥ: who lost their relative | te sarve: let all of them | paśyantu: see | nidhanam: the death | rāmasya: of Rama | sumahat priyat: the most beloved | adya: today. |

TRANSLATION

"Let all those demons in Lanka, whose relatives have died in battle, witness the death of the most beloved Rama today."

VERSE 38

अद्य शोकपरीतानाम् स्वबन्धुवधशोचिनाम्
शत्रोर्युधि विनाशेन करोम्यश्रुप्रमार्जनम्

adya śokaparītānām svabandhuvadhaśocinām
śatroryudhi vināśena karomyaśrupramārjanam

SYNONYMS

karomi: I shall do | adya: today | aśrupramārjanam: the act of wiping off tears | śoka parītānām: of demons who are afflicted with grief | svabandhu vadha śocinām: lamenting by the annihilation of their relatives | śatroḥ vināśena: due to destroyable by the adversaries | yudhi: in combat. |

TRANSLATION

"Today, I shall do the act of wiping off tears of demons, who have been afflicted with grief and lamenting because of the destruction of their relatives in combat by the adversaries."

VERSE 39

अद्य पर्वतसम्काशम् ससूर्यमिव तोयदम्
विकीर्णम् पश्य समरे सुग्रीवम् प्लवगेश्वरम्

adya parvatasamkāśam sasūryamiva toyadam
vikīrṇam paśya samare sugrīvam plavageśvaram

"See today in battle, the mountain-like Sugreeva, the king of monkeys, looking like a cloud illuminated by the sun, thrown about, dissipated."

VERSE 40

कथम् च राक्षसैरेभिर्मया च परिसान्त्वितः
जिघांसुभिर्दाशरथिम् व्यथसे त्वमिहानघ

katham ca rākṣasairebhirmayā ca parisāntvitaḥ
jighāṃsubhirdāśarathim vyathase tvamihānagha

SYNONYMS

anagha: O faultless Ravana! | katham ca: why | tvam: are you | vyathase: agitated | iha: now | parisāntvitaḥ: when you are being consoled | ebhiḥ rākṣasaiḥ: by these demons | mayā ca: and by me | jighāmsubhiḥ: who are desirous of killing | dāsarathim: Rama. |

TRANSLATION

"O faultless Ravana! Why are you agitated now, when you are being consoled by those demons and by me, who are desirous of killing Rama?"

VERSE 41

माम् निहत्य किल त्वाम् हि निहनिष्यति राघवः
नाहामात्मनि सम्तापम् गच्छेयम् राक्षसाधिप

mām nihatya kila tvām hi nihaniṣyati rāghavaḥ
nāhāmātmani samtāpam gaccheyam rākṣasādhipa

SYNONYMS

rākṣasādhipa: O king of demons! | rāghavaḥ: Rama | nihatya: after killing | mām: me | nihaniṣyati kila hi: will indeed kill | tvām: you | aham: I | nagaccheyam: do not undergo | samtāpam: regret | ātmani: for myself (on that account). |

TRANSLATION

"O king of demons! Rama will indeed kill you, only after killing me. On that account, I do not regret for myself."

VERSE 42

कामम् त्विदानीमपि माम् व्यादिश त्वम् परम्तप
न परः प्रेक्षणीयस्ते युद्धायातुलविक्रम

kāmam tvidānīmapi mām vyādiśa tvam paramtapa
na paraḥ prekṣaṇīyaste yuddhāyātulavikrama

SYNONYMS

paramtapa: O annihilator of enemies | atula vikrama: having unequal prowess! | idanīmapi: even now | tvam vyādiśa: you command | mām: me | kāmam: as you wish | na paraḥ: no other person | prekṣaṇīyaḥ: need be sought | yuddhāya: (for dispatch) to battle. |

TRANSLATION

"O Ravana, having unequal prowess and the annihilator of enemies! You can command me, even now, as you wish. No other person need be sought, for a dispatch to the battle."

VERSE 43

अहमुत्सादयिष्यामि शत्रूंस्तव महाबलान्
यदि शक्रो यदि यमो यदि पावकमारुतौ

ahamutsādayiṣyāmi śatrūṃstava mahābalān
yadi śakro yadi yamo yadi pāvakamārutau

SYNONYMS

aham: I | utsādayiṣyāmi: can distroy | tava śatrūn: your enemies | mahābalān: who have great strength | yodhayiṣyāmi: can engage in combat | tān: those | śakraḥ yadi: whether Indra | yamaḥ yadi: or Yama | pāvaka mārutau yadi: or the fire god or the wind-god | kubera varuṇā vapi: or Kubera or even Varuna. |

TRANSLATION

"I can destroy your enemies, who have a great strength. I can engage in combat with all those persons, whether he is Indra or Yama or the fire-god to the wind-god or even Varuna."

VERSE 44

गिरिमात्रशरीरस्य शितशूलधरस्य मे

girimātraśarīrasya śitaśūladharasya me

SYNONYMS

puramdaraḥ: Indra also | bibhīyātvai: gets frightened | me: of me | girimātra śarīrasya: having a mountain-sized body | śitaśūla dharasya: wielding a sharpened pike | tīkṣṇa damṣṭrasya: having pointed tusks | nardataḥ: and even as I roar. |

TRANSLATION

"Indra also gets frightened of me, having a mountain-sized body wielding a sharpened pike, having pointed tusks and even as I roar."

VERSE 45

अथवा त्यक्तशस्त्रस्य मृद्नतस्तरसा रिपून्

athavā tyaktaśastrasya mṛdnatastarasā ripūn

SYNONYMS

athavā: even otherwise | me: to me | tyakta śastrasya: who has given up all weapons | mṛdnataḥ: and who is smashing | ripūn: the enemies | tarasā: by strength alone | na kaścit: no one | śaktaḥ: is able | sthātum: to stand | pratimukhaḥ: in front (of me) | jijīvṣuḥ: alive. |

TRANSLATION

"Even otherwise, no one can stand alive in front of me, who is even weaponless and smashing the enemies by me strength alone."

VERSE 46

नैव शक्त्या न गदया नासिना निशितैः शरैः

naiva śaktyā na gadayā nāsinā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ

SYNONYMS

naiva: not even | śaktyā: javelin | na gadayā: nor with a mace | asinā: nor with a sword | niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ: nor with sharp arrows | samrabdhaḥ: getting excited | haniṣyāmi: I can kill | vajriṇamapi: even Indra | hastābhyamaiva: with my hands only. |

TRANSLATION

"Without using a javelin or a mace or a sword or sharp arrows, I myself, on getting excited, can kill even Indra, with my bare hands."

VERSE 47

यदि मे मुष्टिवेगम् स राघवो।अद्य सहिष्यति

yadi me muṣṭivegam sa rāghavo|adya sahiṣyati

SYNONYMS

rāghavaḥ yadi: If Rama | adya: today | sahiṣyati: endures | me muṣṭi vegam: the rapid blows of my fists | tataḥ: then | me: my | bāṇāghau: flood of arrows | pāsyanti: will drink | rudhiram: the blood | rāghavasya: of Rama. |

TRANSLATION

"If Rama today survives even after facing the rapid blows of my fists, then my flood of arrows will drink the blood of Rama."

VERSE 48

चिन्तया तप्यसे राजन् किमर्थम् मयि तिष्ठति

cintayā tapyase rājan kimartham mayi tiṣṭhati

SYNONYMS

rājan: O king! | mayi tiṣṭhati: when I exist | kimartham: why | tapyase: do you suffer | cintayā: from anxiety? | saḥ aham: I as such | udyataḥ: am ready | niryātum: to sally forth | tava śatruvināśāya: for the destroyable of your enemies. |

TRANSLATION

"O king! When I exist, why do you suffer from anxiety? Here, I am ready to sally forth for the destruction of your enemies."

VERSE 49

मुञ्च रामद्भयम् घोरम् निहनिष्यामि सम्युगे

muñca rāmadbhayam ghoram nihaniṣyāmi samyuge

SYNONYMS

50| muṇca: be free | ghoram bhayam rāmāt: from the terrific fear of Rama | samyuge: In the battle | nihaniṣāmi: i will kill | rāghavam: Rama | lakṣmaṇamcaiva: Lakshmana = mahaabalam = the mighty | sugrīvam ca: Sugreeva | hanūmantam ca: and even Hanuma | yena: by whom | laṅkā: Lanka | pradīpitā: was burnt off | rakṣoghnam: and the demons were killed. |

TRANSLATION

"Be free from the terrific fear of Rama. In the battle, I will kill Rama, Lakshmana, the mighty Sugreeva and even Hanuma, by whom the city of Lanka was burnt off and the demons were killed."

VERSE 51

हरींश्च भक्षयिष्यामि सम्युगे समुपस्थिते
असाधारणमिच्छमि तव दातुम् महद्यशः

harīṃśca bhakṣayiṣyāmi samyuge samupasthite
asādhāraṇamicchami tava dātum mahadyaśaḥ

SYNONYMS

bhakṣayiṣyāmi: I shall devour | harīnca: the monkeys | samyuge: in battle | samupasthite: which is near at hand | icchāmi: I wish | dātum: to contribute | mahat: a tremendous | asādhāraṇam: and extra ordinary | yaśaḥ: reputation | tava: for you. |

TRANSLATION

"I shall devour the monkeys in battle, which is near at hand. I wish to contribute a tremendous and extraordinary reputation for you."

VERSE 52

यदिचेन्द्राद्भयम् राजन्यदि चापि स्वयम्भुवः
ततो।अहम् नाशयिष्यामि नैशम् तम इवांशुमान्

yadicendrādbhayam rājanyadi cāpi svayambhuvaḥ
tato|aham nāśayiṣyāmi naiśam tama ivāṃśumān

SYNONYMS

rājan: O king! | bhayam yadi: If you have a fear | indrāt: for Indra | svayabhuvaḥ api: or even for Brahma | nāśayiṣyāmi: I shall remove (it) | tataḥ: then | amśu māniva: as the sun (removes) | tamaḥ: darkness | naiśam: of the night | mayi kruddhe: when I am enraged | devāh api: even celestials | śayiṣyante: lay down | mahītale: on the floor. |

TRANSLATION

'O king! If you have a fear for Indra or even for Brahma, I shall remove it then, as the sun removes darkness of the night. When I am enraged, even celestials will lay down on the floor."

VERSE 53

यमम् च शमयिष्यामि भक्षयिष्यामि पावकम्

yamam ca śamayiṣyāmi bhakṣayiṣyāmi pāvakam

SYNONYMS

śamayiṣyāmi: I shall extinguish | yamam ca: even Yama the god of death | bhakṣayiṣyāmi: I shall devour | pāvakam: the fire-god | ādityam pātayiṣyāmi sanakṣatram: I shall cause the sun along with the stars to fall asunder | mahītale: on the floor. |

TRANSLATION

"I shall extinguish even Yama the god of death. I shall devour the fire-god. I shall cause the sun along with the stars to fall asunder on the floor."

VERSE 54

शतक्रतुम् वधिष्यामि पास्यामि वरुणालयम्

śatakratum vadhiṣyāmi pāsyāmi varuṇālayam

SYNONYMS

vadhiṣyāmi: I shall kill | śatakratum: Indra | pāsyāmi: I shall drink away | varuṇālayam: the ocean | cūrṇayiṣyāmi parvatān: I shall crush the mountains into a powder | dārayiṣyāmi: I shall tear up | medinīm: the earth. |

TRANSLATION

"I shall kill Indra. I shall drink away the ocean. I shall crush the mountains into a powder. I shall tear up the earth."

VERSE 55

दीर्घकालम् प्रसुप्तस्य कुम्भकर्णस्य विक्रमम्

dīrghakālam prasuptasya kumbhakarṇasya vikramam

SYNONYMS

56| bhūtāni: (Let) all the living beings | bhakṣyamāṇāni: being devoured | sarvaśaḥ: from all sides | adya: today | paśyantu: see | vikramam: the prowess | kumbhakarṇasya: of Kumbhakarna | prasuptasya: who slept | dīrghakālam: for a long time | idam: this | sarvam: entire | tridivam: heaven | na pūryate nanu: does not indeed satisfy | āhārasya: my eating. |

TRANSLATION

"Let all the living beings, being devoured from all sides see today the prowess of Kumbhakarna, who slept for a long time. The entire heaven is not enough for my food."

VERSE 57

वधेन ते दाशरथेः सुखावहम्
सुखम् समाहर्तुमहम् व्रजामि
निहत्य रामम् सह लक्ष्मणेन
खादामि सर्वान् हरियूथमुख्यान्

vadhena te dāśaratheḥ sukhāvaham
sukham samāhartumaham vrajāmi
nihatya rāmam saha lakṣmaṇena
khādāmi sarvān hariyūthamukhyān

SYNONYMS

aham vrajāmi: I am going | āhartum: to fetch | te: you | sukham: happiness | sukhāvaham: conferring you a delight | vadhena dāśaratheḥ: by destroyal of Rama | nihatya: killing | rāmam: Rama | lakṣmaṇena saha: along with Lakshmana | khādāmi: I shall devour | sarvān: all | hariyūthamukhyān: the chiefs of army of monkeys. |

TRANSLATION

"I am going to bring you happiness, conferring you a delight by the destroyal of Rama. Having killed Rama along with Lakshmana, I shall devour all the chiefs of army of monkeys."

VERSE 58

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे त्रिषष्टितमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe triṣaṣṭitamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

rājan: O king | rāmasva: you make merry | pibaca: and drink | vāruṇīm: wine | adya: today | vinīya: throw away | duḥkham: your agony | kuruṣva: and do | kṛtyāni: your duties | rāme: while Rama | gamite: is sent | yamakṣayam: to the world of Yama the god of death | sītā: Seetha | bhaviṣyati: will be | vaśagā: subservient to you | cirāya: after a long time. |

TRANSLATION

"O king! You make merry today and drink wine. Throw away your agony and perform your usual duties. While I send Rama to the world of Yama, the god of death, Seetha will be subservient to your after a log time."
