Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

स तु राक्षसशार्दूलो निद्रामदसमाकुलः
राजमार्गम् श्रिया जुष्टम् ययौ विपुलविक्रमः

sa tu rākṣasaśārdūlo nidrāmadasamākulaḥ
rājamārgam śriyā juṣṭam yayau vipulavikramaḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that | rākṣasaśārdūlaḥ: foremost among demons | vipula vikramaḥ: of extensive prowess | nidrāmada samākulaḥ: but filled with an intoxicating drowsiness | yayau: marched along | rājamārgam: the king's high way |

TRANSLATION

That Kumbhakarna of great prowess and the foremost, having full of intoxicating drowsiness, marched along the king's highway, full of royal dignity.

VERSE 2

राक्षसानाम् सहस्रैश्च वृतः परमदुर्जयः
गृहेभ्यः पुष्पवर्षेण कीर्यमाणस्तदा ययौ

rākṣasānām sahasraiśca vṛtaḥ paramadurjayaḥ
gṛhebhyaḥ puṣpavarṣeṇa kīryamāṇastadā yayau

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | parama durjayaḥ: that Kumbhakarna | vṛtaḥ: surrounded | sahasraiḥ rākṣasānām: by thousands of demons | yayau: marched ahead | kīryamāṇaḥ puṣpavarṣeṇa: strewn with a shower of flowers | gṛhebhyaḥ: from houses (liming the way). |

TRANSLATION

Then, that Kumbhakarna, who was very difficult to be conquered, accompanied by thousands of demons, sallied forth, covered with a shower of flowers from the houses (lining the way).

VERSE 3

स हेमजालविततम् भानुभास्वरदर्शनम्
ददर्श विपुलम् रम्यम् राक्षसेन्द्रनिवेशनम्

sa hemajālavitatam bhānubhāsvaradarśanam
dadarśa vipulam ramyam rākṣasendraniveśanam

SYNONYMS

saḥ: he | dadarśa: saw | rākṣasendra niveśanam: Ravana's abode | hema jālavitatam: covered with golden grilled windows | vipulam: spacious | ramyam: beautiful | bhānubhāsvara danśanam: with appearance of a shining sun. |

TRANSLATION

He saw Ravana's abode, covered with golden grilled windows, spacious and looking beautiful, like a shining sun.

VERSE 4

स तत्तदा सूर्य इवाभ्रजालम्
प्रविश्य रक्षोधिपतेर्निवेशनम्
ददर्श दूरे।अग्रजमासनस्थम्
स्वयंभुवम् शक्र इवासनस्थम्

sa tattadā sūrya ivābhrajālam
praviśya rakṣodhipaterniveśanam
dadarśa dūre|agrajamāsanastham
svayaṃbhuvam śakra ivāsanastham

SYNONYMS

praviśya: entering | rakṣodhi pateḥ niveśanam: Ravana's palace | sūryaḥ iva: like the sun (entering) | abhrajālam: a mass of clouds | saḥ: he | tadā: then | dadarśa: saw | agrajam: his brother | āsanastham: sitting on a throne | dūre: from a distance | śakraḥ iva: as Indra (saw) | svayambhuvam: Brahma | āsanāstham: perched on his seat. |

TRANSLATION

Entering Ravana's palace, like the sun entering a mass of clouds, Kumbhakarna then saw from of distance his brother seated on a throne, as Indra saw Brahma perched on his seat.

VERSE 5

भ्रातुः स भवनं गच्छन् रक्षोगणसमन्वितः
कुम्भकर्णः पदन्यासैरकम्पयत् मेदिनीम्

bhrātuḥ sa bhavanaṃ gacchan rakṣogaṇasamanvitaḥ
kumbhakarṇaḥ padanyāsairakampayat medinīm

SYNONYMS

gacchan: going | bhrātruh bhavanam: to his brother's palace | saḥ kumbhakarṇaḥ: that Kumbhakarna | rakṣogaṇasamanvitaḥ: accompanied by troops of demons | medinīm akampayata: caused the earth of shake | padanyāsaiḥ: with his stamping strides. |

TRANSLATION

While going to his brother's palace, that Kumbhakarna, accompanied by troops of demons, caused the earth to shake with his stamping strides.

VERSE 6

सो।अभिगम्य गृहम् भ्रातुः कक्ष्यामभिविगाह्य च
ददर्शोद्विग्नमासीनम् विमाने पुष्पके गुरुम्

so|abhigamya gṛham bhrātuḥ kakṣyāmabhivigāhya ca
dadarśodvignamāsīnam vimāne puṣpake gurum

SYNONYMS

abhigamya: reaching | bhrātuḥ gṛham: his brother's house | abhivigāhyaca: and entering | kakṣyām: the inner apartment | saḥ: he | dadarśa: saw | udvignam gurum: his worried brother | āsīnam: sitting | puṣpaka vimāne: in Pushapaka |

TRANSLATION

Reaching his brother's house and entering the inner apartment, Kumbhakarna saw his worried brother sitting in Pushpaka, a self-moving aerial car.

VERSE 7

अथ दृष्ट्वा दशग्रीवः कुम्भकर्णमुपस्थितम्
तूर्णमुत्थाय सम्हृष्टः सम्निकर्षमुपानयत्

atha dṛṣṭvā daśagrīvaḥ kumbhakarṇamupasthitam
tūrṇamutthāya samhṛṣṭaḥ samnikarṣamupānayat

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | kumbhakarṇam: Kumbhakarna | upasthitam: who arrived | daśagrīvaḥ: Ravana | atha: then | tūrṇam: soon | utthāya: rose up | samhṛṣṭaḥ: delighted | upānayat: and brought (him) | samīkarṣam: to his vicinity. |

TRANSLATION

On seeing Kumbhakarna who arrived there, Ravana then quickly rose up from his seat, delighted and brought him nearer to his side.

VERSE 8

अथासीनस्य पर्यङ्के कुम्भकर्णो महाबलः
भ्रातुर्ववन्दे चरणौ किम् कृत्यमिति चाब्रवीत्

athāsīnasya paryaṅke kumbhakarṇo mahābalaḥ
bhrāturvavande caraṇau kim kṛtyamiti cābravīt

SYNONYMS

atha: then | mahābalaḥ: the mighty | kumbhakarṇaḥ: Kumbhakarna | vavan de: offered salutation | caraṇau: to the feet | bhrātuḥ: of his brother | āsīnasya: sitting | paryaṇke: on a sofa | abravīt: and spoke | iti ca: saying | kim kṛtyan: "What is the work?" |

TRANSLATION

Then, the mighty Kumbhakarna having offered salutation to the feet of his brother sitting on a sofa, asked him, "What is to be done?"

VERSE 9

उत्पत्य चैनम् मुदितो रावणः परिषस्वजे
स भ्रात्रा सम्परिष्वक्तो यथावच्छाभिनन्दितः

utpatya cainam mudito rāvaṇaḥ pariṣasvaje
sa bhrātrā sampariṣvakto yathāvacchābhinanditaḥ

SYNONYMS

rāvanaḥ: Ravana | utpatya: rising up (from his seat) | pariṣasvaje: embraced | enam: him | saḥ kimbhakarṇaḥ: that Kumbhakarna | yathāvat pariṣvaktaḥ: who was duly embraced | abhinanditaḥ: and made happy | bhrātā: by his brother | pratipede: reached | śubham: an auspicious | divyam: charming | varāasanam: and excellent seat. |

TRANSLATION

Rising up from his seat, Ravana embraced him. That Kumbhakarna, who was thus embraced and made happy by his brother, occupied an auspicious, charming and excellent seat.

VERSE 10

स तदासनमाश्रित्य कुम्भकर्णो महाबलः

sa tadāsanamāśritya kumbhakarṇo mahābalaḥ

SYNONYMS

āśritya: resting on | tat: that | āsanam: seat | saḥ: that | mahābalaḥ: mighty | kumbhakarṇaḥ: Kumbhakarna | samrakta nayanaḥ: with blood-shot eyes | krodhāt: in anger | abravīt: spoke | vākyam: (the folowoing0 words | rāvaṇam: to Ravana. |

TRANSLATION

Resting on that seat, the mighty Kumbhakarna, with his blood-shot eyes in anger, spoke to Ravana as follows:

VERSE 11

किम्मर्थमहमादृत्य त्वया राजन् प्रबोधितः

kimmarthamahamādṛtya tvayā rājan prabodhitaḥ

SYNONYMS

rājan: O king! | kimartham: for what purpose | aham: I | prabodhitaḥ: have been woken up | tvayā: by you | ādṛtya: with effort? | śamsa: tell me | kasmāt: from whom | bhayam: is the danger | te: for you | atra: here? | kovā: or who | bhaviṣyati: will be | pretaḥ: a dead person? |

TRANSLATION

"O king! For what purpose have I been woken up by you, with effort? Tell me from whom is the danger for you here and who is to be killed."

VERSE 12

भ्रातरम् रावणः क्रुद्धं कुम्भकर्णमवस्थितम्

bhrātaram rāvaṇaḥ kruddhaṃ kumbhakarṇamavasthitam

SYNONYMS

rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | netrābhyām: with his eyes | pari vṛttabhyām: rolling | roṣeṇa: with annoyance | abravīt: spoke | kumbhakarṇam: to Kumbhakarna | bhrātaram: his brother | avasthitam: who was there | kruddham: with anger. |

TRANSLATION

Ravana, with his eyes rolling with annoyance, spoke to Kumbhakarna, his brother, who was there with anger (as follows):

VERSE 13

अयम् ते सुमहन् कालः शयानस्य महाबल

ayam te sumahan kālaḥ śayānasya mahābala

SYNONYMS

mahābala: O mighty Kumbhakarna! | te: for you | śayānasya: who have slept | ayam: this | sumahān kālaḥ: is a very long time | tvam: you | suṣuptaḥ: who were fast asleep | na jānīṣe: do not know | bhayam: about the fear | rāma kṛtam: created by Rama | mama: in me. |

TRANSLATION

"O mighty Kumbhakarna! You slept for a long period. You, who were fast asleep, do not know about the fear created by Rama in me."

VERSE 14

एष दाशरथी रामः सुग्रीवसहितो बली

eṣa dāśarathī rāmaḥ sugrīvasahito balī

SYNONYMS

eṣaḥ: this | rāmaḥ: Rama | dāśarathiḥ: the son of Dasaratha | balī: a strong man | sugrīva sahitaḥ: along with Sugreeva | laṅghayitvā: after crossing | samudram: the ocean | parikṛntati: is cutting short | naḥ kulam: our race. |

TRANSLATION

"This Rama, the son of Dasaratha, a strong man along with Sugreeva, having crossed the ocean, is cutting short our race."

VERSE 15

हन्त पश्यस्व लङ्कया वनान्युपवनानि च

hanta paśyasva laṅkayā vanānyupavanāni ca

SYNONYMS

hanta: Alas! | paśyasva: see! | āgatya: coming | sukham: happily | setunā: by a bridge | vanāni: the forests | upavanānica: and groves | kṛtam: have been covered | vānaraikārṇavam: an ocean of monkeys. |

TRANSLATION

"Alas! See! Coming happily by a bridge, the forests and groves have been covered with an ocean full of monkeys."

VERSE 16

ये राक्षसा मुख्यतमा हतास्ते वानरैर्युधि

ye rākṣasā mukhyatamā hatāste vānarairyudhi

SYNONYMS

17| te: they | ye: who were | mukhyatamāḥ rākṣasāḥ: very important demons | hatāh: were killed | vānaraiḥ: by the monkeys | yudhi: in battle | na paśyāmi: I do not envisage | kṣayam: annihilation | kathamcana: in any way | vānarāṇām: of monkeys | yuddhe: in combat. | vānarāḥ: the monkeys | na cāpi jita pūrvāaḥ: were not even defeated before | kadācana: at any time |

TRANSLATION

"The monkeys killed very important demons in battle. I do not envisage, in any way, the destroyable of monkeys on the battle-field. It seems the monkeys were not even defeated at any time before, in a combat."

VERSE 18

तदेतद्भयमुत्पन्नम् त्रायस्वेह महाबल
नाशय त्वमिमानद्य तदर्थम् बोधितो भवान्

tadetadbhayamutpannam trāyasveha mahābala
nāśaya tvamimānadya tadartham bodhito bhavān

SYNONYMS

mahābala: O mighty Kumbhakarna! | tat: such | etat: of this danger | utpannam: has arisen | trāyasva: you have to help (us) | iha: now | imām nāśaya: get them destroyed | adya: now | bhavān: you | boditaḥ: have been woken up | tadartham: for that purpose. |

TRANSLATION

"O mighty Kumbhakarna! Such a danger has arisen. You have to help us now. Get them destroyed now. You have been woken up solely for that purpose."

VERSE 19

सर्वक्षपितकोशम् च स त्वमभ्युपपद्य माम्
त्रायस्वेमाम् पुरीम् लङ्काम् बालवृद्धावशेषिताम्

sarvakṣapitakośam ca sa tvamabhyupapadya mām
trāyasvemām purīm laṅkām bālavṛddhāvaśeṣitām

SYNONYMS

sah tvam: you | abhyupadya: rescuing | mām: me | sarvakṣapita kośam: whose treasury has become completely diminished | trāyasva: protect | imām: this | laṅkām purīm: City of Lanka | bāla vṛddhāvaśeṣitām: where the children and the aged only are left over. |

TRANSLATION

"Rescuing me, whose treasury has become completely diminished, you protect this city of Lanka, where only the children and the aged are left over."

VERSE 20

भ्रातुरर्थे महाबाहो कुरु कर्म सुदुष्करम्
मयैवम् नोक्तपुर्वो हि कश्चिद्भ्रातः परम्तप

bhrāturarthe mahābāho kuru karma suduṣkaram
mayaivam noktapurvo hi kaścidbhrātaḥ paramtapa

SYNONYMS

mahābāho: O | kuru: perform | karma: the act | suduṣkaram: which is very difficult to do | bhrātuḥ arthe: for the sake of this brother | bhrātaḥ: O brother | paramtapa: the annihilator of enemies! | na uktapūrvaḥ hi: It was not indeed requested before | evam: thus | kaścit: with any one | mayā: by me. |

TRANSLATION

"O the great armed Kumbhakarna. For the sake of your brother, perform this act, which is very difficult to do. O brother, the annihilator of enemies! In this way, I did not request anyone ever before."

VERSE 21

त्वय्यस्ति मम च स्नेहः परा सम्भावना च मे
दैवासुरेषु युद्धेषु बहुशो राक्षसर्षभ

tvayyasti mama ca snehaḥ parā sambhāvanā ca me
daivāsureṣu yuddheṣu bahuśo rākṣasarṣabha

SYNONYMS

mama: to me | asti: there is | snehaḥ: affection | tvayi: towards you | me: to me | parā: a high | sambhāvanāca: respect too | rākṣasarṣabha: O the foremost of demons! | bahuśaḥ: for several times | prativyūhya: attacking | devāh: the celestials | asurāḥ: and demons | daivāsureṣu yuddheṣu: in battles between celestials and demons | nirjitāḥ: (they) were defeated | tvayā: by you | yudhi: in battle. |

TRANSLATION

"I have a great respect and affection towards you. O the foremost of demons! For several times, in battles between gods and demons, you conquered the celestials and demons, after attacking them in the battle."

VERSE 22

तदेतत्सर्वमातिष्ठ वीर्यम् भीमपराक्रम्

tadetatsarvamātiṣṭha vīryam bhīmaparākram

SYNONYMS

bhīma parākrama: O Kumbhakarna of terrible prowess! | tat: therefore | ātiṣṭha: show your superiority | etat: from this | sarvam: entire | vīryam: vigour | na balī dṛśyate hi: no strong person is indeed seen | sadṛśaḥ: who is equal | te: to you | sarva bhūteṣu: in all beings. |

TRANSLATION

"O Kumbhakarna of terrible prowess! Therefore, show your entire prowess. There is indeed no one, in the entire beings, who is equal to you in strength."

VERSE 23

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे द्विषष्टितमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe dviṣaṣṭitamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

priyaraṇa: O Kumbhakarna | bāndhava piya: and feeling affection for relatives! | kuruṣva: perform | uttamam etat: this excellent act | priyahitam: which is dear and beneficial | me: to me | yathāpriyam: as per you wish | vidhama: blow away | sapatnavāhinīm: the army of adversaries | svatejasā: by your vital power | śaradghanam iva: as an autumnal cloud (is blown away) | mahān udyataḥ pavanaḥ: by a high-rising wind. |

TRANSLATION

"O Kumbhakarna, delighting in war and feeling affection for relatives! Perform this excellent act, which is dear and beneficial to me, as per your liking. Blow away the army of adversaries by your vital power, as an autumnal cloud is blown away by a high-rising wind."
