Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

ततो रामो महातेजा धनुरादाय वीर्यवान्
किरीटिनम् महाकायम् कुम्भकर्णम् ददर्श ह

tato rāmo mahātejā dhanurādāya vīryavān
kirīṭinam mahākāyam kumbhakarṇam dadarśa ha

SYNONYMS

ādāya: having taken | dhanuḥ: his bow | rāmaḥ: Rama | mahātejāḥ: of great brilliance | vīryavān: and prowess | tataḥ: then | dadarśa: saw | mahākāyam: the bulky | kumbhakarṇam: Kumbhakarna | kirriṭinam: decorated with a diadem. |

TRANSLATION

Having taken his bow, Rama of great brilliance and prowess, then beheld the bulky Kumbhakarna, adorned with a diadem.

VERSE 2

तम् दृष्ट्वा राक्षसश्रेष्ठम् पर्वताकारदर्शनम्
क्रममाणमिवाकाशम् पुरा नारायणम् प्रभुम्

tam dṛṣṭvā rākṣasaśreṣṭham parvatākāradarśanam
kramamāṇamivākāśam purā nārāyaṇam prabhum

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | tam rākṣasaśreṣṭham: that paramount demon | parvatākāra darśanam: whose appearance was in the form of a mountain | prabhum nārāyaṇam yathā: looking like Lord Narayana (the son of the original Man) | kramamāṇam: taking strides across | ākāśam: space | purā: long ago (manifested in the form of Trivikrama |

TRANSLATION

Seeing that paramount demon, whose appearance was in the form of a mountain and looking like Lord Narayana (the son of the original Man); taking strides across space, (manifested in the form of Trivikrama, who measured the whole universe in a couple of strides) Rama became vigilant.

VERSE 3

सतोयाम्बुदसम्काशम् काञ्चनाङ्गदभूषणम्
दृष्ट्वा पुनः प्रदुद्राव वानराणाम् महाचमूः

satoyāmbudasamkāśam kāñcanāṅgadabhūṣaṇam
dṛṣṭvā punaḥ pradudrāva vānarāṇām mahācamūḥ

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: beolding | punaḥ: again | satoyāmbuda samkāśam: who was appearing like a rainy black cloud | kāṇcanāṅgada bhūṣaṇam: wearing a golden bracelet as an ornament on his upper arm | mahā camūḥ: that large army | vānarāṇām: of monkeys | pradudrāva: took to their heels speadily. |

TRANSLATION

Beholding him again, who was appear like a rainy black cloud and wearing a golden bracelet as an ornament on his upper arm, that huge army of monkeys took to their heels in full speed.

VERSE 4

विद्रुताम् वाहिनीम् दृष्ट्वा वर्धमानम् च राक्षसम्
सविस्मितमिदम् रामो विभीषणमुवाच ह

vidrutām vāhinīm dṛṣṭvā vardhamānam ca rākṣasam
savismitamidam rāmo vibhīṣaṇamuvāca ha

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | vāhinīm: the army | vidrutām: who ran away | rākṣasamca: and the demon | vardhamānam: who was increasing his body | rāmaḥ: Rama | savismitam: with a surprise | uvāca ha: spoke | vibhīṣaṇam: to Vibhishana | idam: these words. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing the army running away and the demon increasing his body, Rama with a surprise, spoke to vibhishana as follows:

VERSE 5

को।असु पर्वतसम्काशः किरीटी हरिलोचनः
लङ्कायाम् दृश्येते वीरः सविद्युदिव तोयदः

ko|asu parvatasamkāśaḥ kirīṭī harilocanaḥ
laṅkāyām dṛśyete vīraḥ savidyudiva toyadaḥ

SYNONYMS

vīraḥ: this eminent demon | parvata samkāśaḥ: who appears like a mountian | kirīṭī iva: with a diadem | harilocanaḥ: and tawny eyes | toyadaḥ iva: looking like a cloud | savidyut: is seen | laṅkāyām: in Lanka | kaḥ: who | asau: is he? |

TRANSLATION

"This eminent demon, appearing as a mountain, with a diadem and tawmy eyes and looking like a cloud with a flash of lightning, is seen in Lanka. Who is he?"

VERSE 6

पृथिव्याम् केतुभूतो।असौ महानेको।अत्र दृश्यते
यम् दृष्ट्वा वानराः सर्वे विद्रवन्ति यतस्ततः

pṛthivyām ketubhūto|asau mahāneko|atra dṛśyate
yam dṛṣṭvā vānarāḥ sarve vidravanti yatastataḥ

SYNONYMS

asau: he | ekaḥ: alone | mahān: with a huge body | atra: here | pṛthivām: on earth | dṛśyate: is appearing | ketu bhūtaḥ: like a meteror | dṛṣṭvā: seeing | yam: whom | sarve: all | vānarāḥ: the monkeys | vidravanti: are running away | yatastataḥ: here and there. |

TRANSLATION

"He alone with a huge body here on this earth, is appearing like a solitary meteror, by seeing whom all the monkeys are running away hither and thither."

VERSE 7

आचक्ष्व सुमहान् को।असौ रक्षो वा यदि वासुरः
न मयैवम्विधम् भूतम् दृष्टपूर्वम् कदाचन

ācakṣva sumahān ko|asau rakṣo vā yadi vāsuraḥ
na mayaivamvidham bhūtam dṛṣṭapūrvam kadācana

SYNONYMS

kaḥ: who | asau: is he | sumahān: with a very large body? | ācakṣva: tell | rakṣaḥ vā: whether he is a demon | yadivā: or | asuraḥ: an evil spirit | evam vidham: such | bhūtam: a being | na dṛṣṭvā pūrvan: has never been seen earlier | mayā: by me | kadācana: at any time. |

TRANSLATION

"Who is he with such a colossal body? Tell me whether he is a demon or an evil spirit. I have not seen such a creature earlier at any time."

VERSE 8

सम्पृष्टो राजपुत्रेण रामेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा
विभीषणो महाप्राज्ञः काकुत्थ्समिदमब्रवीत्

sampṛṣṭo rājaputreṇa rāmeṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā
vibhīṣaṇo mahāprājñaḥ kākutthsamidamabravīt

SYNONYMS

sampṟ^ṣṭaḥ: asked (thus) | rāmeṇa: by Rama | rājaputreṇa: the prince | akliṣṭakarmaṇā: who was unweary in action | mahāprāñaḥ: the highly intelligent | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | abravīt: spoke | idam: these words | kākutthsam: to Rama. |

TRANSLATION

Thus asked by Rama the prince, who was unweary in action, the highly intelligent Vibhishana replied to Rama as follows:

VERSE 9

येन वैवस्वतो युद्धे वासवश्च पराजितः
सैष विश्रवसः पुत्रः कुम्भकर्णः प्रतापवान्

yena vaivasvato yuddhe vāsavaśca parājitaḥ
saiṣa viśravasaḥ putraḥ kumbhakarṇaḥ pratāpavān

SYNONYMS

yena: by whm | yuddhe: in the battle | vaivasvataḥ: Yama | vāsavasca: and indra | parājitaḥ: were defeated | saḥ eṣaḥ: that very person | pratāpavān kumbhakarṇah: is the powerful kumbhakara | putraḥ: the son | viśravasaḥ: of Visravasa | na vidyate: there is no | anyaḥ rākṣasaḥ: other demon | asya pramāṇa sadṛśaḥ: corresponding to his size. |

TRANSLATION

"He is the powerful Kumbhakarna, the son of Visravasa. He conquered Yama and Indra in battle. Tehre is no other demon, corresponding to the size of his body."

VERSE 10

एतेन देवा युधि दानवाश्च
यक्षाभुजम्गाः पिशिताशनाश्च
गंधर्वविद्याधरपन्नगाश्च
सहस्रशो राघव सम्प्रभग्नाः

etena devā yudhi dānavāśca
yakṣābhujamgāḥ piśitāśanāśca
gaṃdharvavidyādharapannagāśca
sahasraśo rāghava samprabhagnāḥ

SYNONYMS

rāghava: O | etena: by him | sahasraśaḥ: thousands of | devāh: celestials | dānavāśca: demons | yakṣāḥ: a class of demi-gods | bhujangāḥ: serpent-demons | piśitāśanāśca: ogres | gandharva vidyādhara pannagāśca: celestial musicians | yudhi: in battle. |

TRANSLATION

"O Rama! He conquered thousands of celestials, demons, a class of demi-gods, serpent demons, ogres, Gandharvas teh celestial musicians, Vidyadharas the celestials artistes and Kinnaras (the semi-divine beings with the human form and the head of a horse) in battle."

VERSE 11

शूलपाणिं विरूपाक्षम् कुम्भकर्णम् महाबलम्
हन्तुम् न शेकुस्त्रिंदशाः कालो।अयमिति मोहिताः

śūlapāṇiṃ virūpākṣam kumbhakarṇam mahābalam
hantum na śekustriṃdaśāḥ kālo|ayamiti mohitāḥ

SYNONYMS

kumbhakarṇam mahābalam: (Seeing) the mighty Kumbhakarna | virūpakṣam: having ghastly eyes | śūlapāṇim: with a spear in hand | tridaśāḥ: the celestials | na śekuḥ: were not able | hantum: to kill (him) | mohitāḥ: confused to think ayam kaalaH iti = that he was Yama the god of Death. |

TRANSLATION

"Seeing the mighty Kumbharana with ghastly eyes and a spear in hand, the celestials were not able to kill him, having confused to think that he was yama the god of Death."

VERSE 12

प्रकृत्या ह्येष तेजस्वी कुम्भकर्णो महाबलः
अन्येषाम् राक्षसेंद्राणाम् वरदानकृतम् बलम्

prakṛtyā hyeṣa tejasvī kumbhakarṇo mahābalaḥ
anyeṣām rākṣaseṃdrāṇām varadānakṛtam balam

SYNONYMS

eṣaḥ: this | kumbhakarṇaḥ: Kumbharna | prakṛtā: by his very nature | tejasvī: is energetic | mahābalaḥ: and mighty | balam: the strength | anyeṣām rākṣasendrāṇām: of the other demons-chiefs | varadānakṛtam: is attributable to boons |

TRANSLATION

"This Kumbhakarna, by his very nature, is energetic and mighty. The strength of the other demon-chiefs is attributable to boons (granted on request by gods)."

VERSE 13

एतेन जातमात्रेण क्षुधार्तेन महात्मना
भक्षितानि सहस्राणि सत्त्वानाम् सुबहून्यपि

etena jātamātreṇa kṣudhārtena mahātmanā
bhakṣitāni sahasrāṇi sattvānām subahūnyapi

SYNONYMS

jātamātreṇa: soon after his birth | sabahūni api: several | sahasrāṇi: thousands | sattvānām: were eaten | etena mahātmanā: by this great souled demon | kṣudhārtena: afflicted as he was by hunger. |

TRANSLATION

"Soon after his birth, this great-souled demon, afflicted as he was by hunger, ate thousands of living creatures."

VERSE 14

तेषु सम्भक्ष्यमाणेषु प्रजा भयनि पीडिताः
यान्ति स्म शरणम् शक्रम् तमप्यर्थम् न्यवेदयन्

teṣu sambhakṣyamāṇeṣu prajā bhayani pīḍitāḥ
yānti sma śaraṇam śakram tamapyartham nyavedayan

SYNONYMS

teṣu sambhakṣyamāṇeṣu: while they were being eaten | prajāḥ: the people | bhayanipīḍitāḥ: tormented by fear | śaraṇam yānti sma: sought refuge with | śakram: Indra | nyavedayan: and reported | artham api: the matter also | tam: about him. |

TRANSLATION

"While the living being were being eaten, the frightened people sought refuge with Indra and even reported the matter about him."

VERSE 15

स कुम्भकर्णम् कुपितो महेन्द्रो
जघान वज्रेण शितेन वज्री
स शक्रवज्रभिहतो महात्मा
चचाल कोपाच्च भृशम् ननाद

sa kumbhakarṇam kupito mahendro
jaghāna vajreṇa śitena vajrī
sa śakravajrabhihato mahātmā
cacāla kopācca bhṛśam nanāda

SYNONYMS

saḥ: Kumbhakarna | mahendraḥ: Mahendra | vajrī: having a thunderbolt | kupitaḥ: was enraged | jaghāna: and struck | kumbhakarṇam: Kumbhakarna | śitena vajreṇa: with the white thunder-bolt | mahātmā: the great souled | śakravajrābhihataḥ: struck by Indra's thunderbolt | cacāla: was quite agitated | bhṛśam nanāda ca: and roared loudly | kopāt: with anger. |

TRANSLATION

That Mahendra wielding a thunder-bolt was enraged and struck Kumbhakarna with his weapon of the white thunderbolt. The great souled Kumbhakarna struck by Indra's thunderbolt was quite agitatated at it and roared loudly with anger."

VERSE 16

तस्य नानद्यमानस्य कुम्भकर्णस्य रक्षसः
श्रुत्वा निनादम् वित्रस्ताः प्रजा भूयो वितत्रसुः

tasya nānadyamānasya kumbhakarṇasya rakṣasaḥ
śrutvā ninādam vitrastāḥ prajā bhūyo vitatrasuḥ

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | ninādam: the roar | tasya kumbhakarṇasya: of that Kumbhakarna | rakṣasaḥ: the demon | nānadyamānasya: who was howling loudly | vitrastāḥ: the frightened | prajāḥ: people | bhūyaḥ viratrasuḥ: were further frightened. |

TRANSLATION

"Hearing the roar of that Kumbakarna, the demon, wh was howling loudly, the grigthened people were further frightened."

VERSE 17

ततः क्रुद्धो महेन्द्रस्य कुम्भकर्णो महाबलः
निष्कृष्यैरावताद्दन्तम् जघानोरसि वासवम्

tataḥ kruddho mahendrasya kumbhakarṇo mahābalaḥ
niṣkṛṣyairāvatāddantam jaghānorasi vāsavam

SYNONYMS

kruddhaḥ: enraged | mahendrasya: on Mahendra | mahābalaḥ: the mighty | kumbhakarṇaḥ: Kumbhakarna | tataḥ: then | niṣkṛṣya: pulled out | danam: a tusk | airāvatāt: of Airavata | jaghāma: and struck it | urasi: into the chest | vāsavam: of Indra. |

TRANSLATION

"Enraged as he was on Mahendra, the mighty Kumbhakarna then pulled out a tusk of Airavata, Indra's elephant and struck it into Indra's chest."

VERSE 18

कुम्भकर्णप्रहारार्तो विजज्वाल स वासवः
ततो विषेदुः सहसा देवा ब्रह्मर्षिदानवाः

kumbhakarṇaprahārārto vijajvāla sa vāsavaḥ
tato viṣeduḥ sahasā devā brahmarṣidānavāḥ

SYNONYMS

saḥ vāsavaḥ: that Devendra | kumbhakarna prahārtārtaḥ: tormented by the hit of Kumbhakarna | vijajvāla: was burning with rage | tataḥ: then | devāḥ: the celestials | brahmarṣi dānavāḥ: Brahmanical sages and demons | sahasā: were suddenly | viṣeduḥ: aggrieved | śakraśca: even Indra | prajābhiḥ saha: with his people | yayau: went | sthānam: to the abode | svayambhuvaḥ: of Brahma the Lord of creation. |

TRANSLATION

"That Devendra, tormented by the hit of Kumbhakarna, was burning with rage. The celestials, Brahmanical sages and demons were suddenly aggrieved. Even Indra with his people went to the abode of Brahma the Lord of creation."

VERSE 19

कुम्भकर्णस्य दौरात्म्यम् शशंसुस्ते प्रजापतेः

kumbhakarṇasya daurātmyam śaśaṃsuste prajāpateḥ

SYNONYMS

20| te: they | śaśamsuḥ: informed | daurātmyam: about the evil-mindedness | kumbhakarṇasya: of Kumbhakarna | prajāpateḥ: to brahama | bhakṣaṇamcāpi: the eating away | prajānām: of the living creatures | dharṣaṇam ca: the assault | divaukasām: on celestials | āśrama dhvamsanamca api: the destroyal of hermitages | tathā: and | parastrīharaṇam: the taking away of others' wives. |

TRANSLATION

"They informed about the evil-mind of Kumbhakarna to Brahma, how he devoured the living creatures, his assault on celestials, the destroyal of hermitages and his taking away of others' wives."

VERSE 21

एवम् प्रजा यदि त्वेष भक्षयिष्यति नित्यशः
अचिरेणैव कालेन शून्यो लोको भविष्यति

evam prajā yadi tveṣa bhakṣayiṣyati nityaśaḥ
acireṇaiva kālena śūnyo loko bhaviṣyati

SYNONYMS

eṣaḥ yadi: if he | bhakṣayiṣyati: eats away | prajāḥ: the created beings | nityaśaḥ: continuously | evam: like this | lokaḥ: the world | bhaviṣyati: will become | śūmyaḥ: desolate | acireṇa kālenaiva: just soon after some time. |

TRANSLATION

"If he eats away the created beings continuously like this, the world will become desolate just soon after some time."

VERSE 22

वासवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा सर्वलोकपितामहः
रक्षांस्यावाहयामास कुम्भकर्णम् ददर्श ह

vāsavasya vacaḥ śrutvā sarvalokapitāmahaḥ
rakṣāṃsyāvāhayāmāsa kumbhakarṇam dadarśa ha

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: on hearing | vacaḥ: the words | vāsavasya: of Indra | sarva lokapitāmahaḥ: Brahma | rakṣāmsi āvāhayāmāsa: called for the demons | dadarśa ha: and saw | kumbhakarṇam: Kumbakarna. |

TRANSLATION

"On hearing the words of Indra, Brahama, the great grandfather of the entire world, called for the demons and saw Kumbhakarna too along with them."

VERSE 23

कुम्भकर्णम् समीक्ष्यैव वितत्रास प्रजापतिः
कुम्भकर्णमथाश्वस्तः स्वयम्भूरिदमब्रवीत्

kumbhakarṇam samīkṣyaiva vitatrāsa prajāpatiḥ
kumbhakarṇamathāśvastaḥ svayambhūridamabravīt

SYNONYMS

samīkṣyaiva: just on seeing | kumbhakarṇam: Kumbhakarna | prajāpatiḥ: Brahma | vitatrāsa: was frightened | atha: thereafter | āśvastaḥ: on restoring confidence | svayambhūḥ: Brahma | abravīt: spoke | idam: these words | kumbharṇam: to Kumbhakarna. |

TRANSLATION

"Just on seeing Kumbhakarna even Brahma was frightened. Thereafter on restoring his confidence, Brahma cursed Kumbhakarna as follows:

VERSE 24

ध्रुवम् लोकविनाशाय पौलस्त्येनासि निर्मितः
तस्मात्त्वमद्यप्रभृति मृतकल्पः शयिष्यसे

dhruvam lokavināśāya paulastyenāsi nirmitaḥ
tasmāttvamadyaprabhṛti mṛtakalpaḥ śayiṣyase

SYNONYMS

nirmitaḥ asi: you were created | paulastyena: by Visravasa | loka vināśāya: for destroyal of the people | dhruvam: It is sure | tasmāt: therefore | tvam: you | śayiṣyase: will be sleeping | adya prabhṛti: from now onwards | mṛta kalpaḥ: apparently dead. |

TRANSLATION

"It is sure that you were created by visravasa for the destroyal of people. On that account, you will be sleeping apparently dead from now onwards."

VERSE 25

ब्रह्मशापाभिभूतो।अथ निपपाताग्रतः प्रभोः
ततः परमसम्भ्रान्तो रावणो वाक्यमब्रवीत्

brahmaśāpābhibhūto|atha nipapātāgrataḥ prabhoḥ
tataḥ paramasambhrānto rāvaṇo vākyamabravīt

SYNONYMS

atha: then | brahmaśāpābhibhūtaḥ: humbled by Brahma's curse | (k͟humbhakarna) nipapāta: fell | agrataḥ: in front | prabhoḥ: of Ravana | tataḥ: thereupon | paramasambhrāntaḥ: the highly perplexed | rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | abravīt: spoke | vākyam: (the following) words: |

TRANSLATION

"Humbled by Brahma's curse, Kumbhakarna then fell down in front of Ravana. Thereupon, the highly perplexed Ravana spoke the following words:"

VERSE 26

प्रवृद्धः काञ्चनो वृक्षः फलकाले निकृन्त्यते
न नप्तारम् स्वकम् न्याय्यम् शप्तुमेवम् प्रजापते

pravṛddhaḥ kāñcano vṛkṣaḥ phalakāle nikṛntyate
na naptāram svakam nyāyyam śaptumevam prajāpate

SYNONYMS

prajāpate: O Brahma! | pravṛddhaḥ: a well-grown | kāṅcanaḥ vṛkṣaḥ: golden tree | nikṛntyate: is being cut off | na nyāyam: It is not fair (on your part) | śaptum: to curse | evam: like this | svakam: your own | naptāram: great grandson. |

TRANSLATION

"'O Brahma! You are cutting off a well-grown golden tree, just at the time of yielding its fruit. It is not fair on your part to curse your own great grandson like this."

VERSE 27

न मिथ्यावचनश्च त्वम् स्वप्स्यत्येव न संशयः
कालस्तु क्रियतामस्य शयने जागरे तथा

na mithyāvacanaśca tvam svapsyatyeva na saṃśayaḥ
kālastu kriyatāmasya śayane jāgare tathā

SYNONYMS

tvam: you | na ca: are not | mithyāvacanaḥ: the one | samśayaḥ na: there is no doubt | svapsyatyeva: he will certainly sleep | kālaḥ kriyatām: let a space of time be created | asya śayane: between his sleeping | tathā: and | jāgare: waking-up. |

TRANSLATION

"Your words can never prove to be in vain. There is no doubt about it. He will have to sleep certainly. Let some space of time be fixed for his sleeping and waking."

VERSE 28

रावस्य वचः श्रुत्वा स्वयम्भूरिदमब्रवीत्
शयिता ह्येष षण्मासानेकाहम् जागरिष्यति

rāvasya vacaḥ śrutvā svayambhūridamabravīt
śayitā hyeṣa ṣaṇmāsānekāham jāgariṣyati

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | vacaḥ: the words | rāvaṇasya: of Ravana | svayambhūḥ: Brahma | abravīt: spoke | idam: these words | eṣaḥ: He | śayitāhi: will indeed sleep | śat māsān: for six months | jāgariṣyati: and wake-up | ekāham: for a day. |

TRANSLATION

"Hearing the words of Ravana, Brahma spoke as follows: He will indeed sleep for six months and wake-up for a day."

VERSE 29

एकेनाह्ना त्वसौ वीरश्च रन् भूमिम् बुभुक्षितः
व्यात्तास्यो भक्षयेल्लोकान् सम्वृद्ध इव पावकः

ekenāhnā tvasau vīraśca ran bhūmim bubhukṣitaḥ
vyāttāsyo bhakṣayellokān samvṛddha iva pāvakaḥ

SYNONYMS

ekena āhnā: on that single day | asau vīraḥ: this male-demon | bubhukṣitaḥ: having starved | caran: while wandering | bhūmim: over the earth | bhakṣayet: will eat | lokān: the world of human beings | vyātyāsyaḥ: with his month wide open | savṛddhah pāvakaḥ iva: as an augmented fire. |

TRANSLATION

"On that single day, this male demon, having starved for six months, will wander over the earth and eat the human race with his month wide open, like an augmented fire."

VERSE 30

सो।असौ व्यसनमापन्नः कुम्भकर्णमबोधयत्
त्वत्पराक्रमभीतश्च राजा सम्प्रति रावणः

so|asau vyasanamāpannaḥ kumbhakarṇamabodhayat
tvatparākramabhītaśca rājā samprati rāvaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

asau: this | rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | saḥ: that very person | rājā: the king (of demons) | āpannaḥ: who got into | vyasanam: an evil plight | tvat parākramabhītaḥ: and frightened as he was in your prowess | samprati: now | abodhayat: got awakened | kumbhakarṇam: Kumbhakarna. |

TRANSLATION

"Ravana, the king of demons, who got into an evil plight and frightened as he was in seeing your prowess, now got Kumbhakarna awakened."

VERSE 31

स एष निर्गतो वीरः शिबिराद्भीमविक्रमः
वानरान् भृशसम्क्रुद्धो भक्षयन् परिधावति

sa eṣa nirgato vīraḥ śibirādbhīmavikramaḥ
vānarān bhṛśasamkruddho bhakṣayan paridhāvati

SYNONYMS

eṣaḥ: this | saḥ vīraḥ: Kumbhakarna that very person | bhīma vikramaḥ: with a terrific prowess | nirgataḥ: started | śibirāt: from his tent | bhṛśasamkruddhaḥ: the highly enraged Kumbharana | bhakṣayan: eating | vānarān: the monkeys (on the way) | paridhāvati: is running (towards us). |

TRANSLATION

"This Kumbhakarna the male-demon with a terrific prowess started his tent. The highly enraged Kumbhakara devourincg the monkeys on is way, is running towards us."

VERSE 32

कुम्भकर्णम् प्रतीक्ष्यैव हरयो।अद्य प्रदुद्रुवुः
कथमेनम् रणे क्रुद्धम् वारयिष्यन्ति वानराः

kumbhakarṇam pratīkṣyaiva harayo|adya pradudruvuḥ
kathamenam raṇe kruddham vārayiṣyanti vānarāḥ

SYNONYMS

pratīkṣyaiva: even on merely seeing | kumbhakarṇam: Kumbhakarna | harayaḥ: the monkeys | adya: now | pradudruvuḥ: have fled away | katham: how | vānarāḥ: can the monkeys | vārayiṣyanti: check | enam: him | kruddham: who is enraged | raṇe: in battle? |

TRANSLATION

"Even on merely seeing Kumbhakarna, the monkeys have now fled away. How can the monkeys check him, who is thus enraged in battle?"

VERSE 33

उच्यन्ताम् वानराः सर्वे यन्त्रमेतत्समुच्छ्रितम्
इति विज्ञाय हरयो भविष्यन्तीह निर्भयाः

ucyantām vānarāḥ sarve yantrametatsamucchritam
iti vijñāya harayo bhaviṣyantīha nirbhayāḥ

SYNONYMS

"Let all the monkeys be told that it is a kind of machine, advancing forward. By knowing this, they can become fearless by now."

VERSE 34

विभीषणवचः श्रुत्वा हेतुमत्सुमुखोद्गतम्
उवाच राघवो वाक्यम् नीलम् सेनापतिम् तदा

vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ śrutvā hetumatsumukhodgatam
uvāca rāghavo vākyam nīlam senāpatim tadā

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

On hearing Vibhishana's words, which were well-founded to make the monkeys well-inclined to fight the battle, Rama then spoke the follwoing words to neela, the chief of army:

VERSE 35

गच्छ सैन्यानि सर्वाणि व्यूह्य तिष्टस्य पावके
द्वाराण्यादाय लङ्कायाश्चर्याश्चाप्यथ सम्क्रमान्

gaccha sainyāni sarvāṇi vyūhya tiṣṭasya pāvake
dvārāṇyādāya laṅkāyāścaryāścāpyatha samkramān

SYNONYMS

pāvake: O Neela the son of fire-god! | gaccha: go | vyūhya: marshalling | sarvāṇi sainyāni: the entire army | ādāya: occupying | dvārāṇi: the door-ways | caryāścāpi: highways | atha: and | samkramān: bridges | laṅkāyāḥ: of Lanka | tiṣṭha: stand ready for operation. |

TRANSLATION

"O Neela the son of fire-god. Go, marshalling the entire army. Occupying the door-ways, high-ways and bridges of Lanka, stand ready for operation."

VERSE 36

शैलशृङ्गाणि वृक्षांश्च शिलाश्चाप्युपसम्हर
तिष्ठन्तु सायुधाः सर्वे वानराः शैलपाणयः

śailaśṛṅgāṇi vṛkṣāṃśca śilāścāpyupasamhara
tiṣṭhantu sāyudhāḥ sarve vānarāḥ śailapāṇayaḥ

SYNONYMS

upasamhara: draw together | śaila śṛṅgāṇi: the mountain-tops | vṛkṣāmśca: trees | śilāścāpi: and even the rocks | sarve vānarāḥ: (Let) all the monkeys | sāyudhāḥ: with their weapons | śaila pāṇayaḥ: and rocks in hand | tiṣṭhantu: stand ready. |

TRANSLATION

"Draw together the mountain-tops, trees and even the rocks. Let all the monkeys with their weapons and rocks in hand, stand ready."

VERSE 37

राघवेण समादिष्टो नीलो हरिचमूपतिः
शशास वानरानीकम् यथावत्कपिकुञ्जरः

rāghaveṇa samādiṣṭo nīlo haricamūpatiḥ
śaśāsa vānarānīkam yathāvatkapikuñjaraḥ

SYNONYMS

samādiṣṭah: as directed | rāghaveṇa: by Rama | nīlaḥ: Neela | haricamūpatiḥ: the commander-in-cheif | kapikuṅjaraḥ: and the foremost among the monkeys | śaśāsa: ordered | vānarānīkam: the monkey-troops | yathāvat: suitably. |

TRANSLATION

As directed by Raghavana, Neela the commander-in-chief and the foremost of the monkeys, ordered the monkey-troops suitably.

VERSE 38

तत्तो गवाक्षः शरभो हनूमानङ्गदस्तथा
शैलशृङ्गाणि शैलाभा गृहीत्वा द्वारमभ्ययुः

tatto gavākṣaḥ śarabho hanūmānaṅgadastathā
śailaśṛṅgāṇi śailābhā gṛhītvā dvāramabhyayuḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | gavākṣaḥ: Gavaksha | śarabhaḥ: Sharabha | hanūmān: Hanuma | tathā: and | aṅgadaḥ: Angada | śailābhāḥ: looking like mountains | abhyayuḥ: reached | dvāram: the gate | gṛhītvā: taking | śailaśṛṇgāṇi: the mountain-tops. |

TRANSLATION

Then, Gavaksha, Sharabha, Hanuma and Angada looking like mountains, reached the gate, taking the mountian-tops.

VERSE 39

रामवाक्यमुपश्रुत्य हरयो जीतकाशिनः
पादपैरर्दयन्वीरा वानराः परवाहिनीम्

rāmavākyamupaśrutya harayo jītakāśinaḥ
pādapairardayanvīrā vānarāḥ paravāhinīm

SYNONYMS

upaśrutya: on hearing | rāmavākyam: Rama's words | jitāśinnaḥ: the fearless | harayaḥ: monkeys | vīrāḥ: the heroic | vānarāḥ: monkeys | ardayan: tormented | paravāhinīm: the enemy-troops | pādapaiḥ: with trees. |

TRANSLATION

On hearing Rama's words, the fearless monkeys started their operation. The heroic monkeys began to torment the enemy-troops with uplifted trees.

VERSE 40

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे एकषष्टितमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe ekaṣaṣṭitamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | tat: that | ugram: terrrific | harīṇām: (army) of monkeys | śailodayata vṛkṣahastam: with uplifted rocks and trees in their hands | rarāja: shne | mahat mahāmbhodharajālamyathaiva: like a big collection of giagantic clouds | samīpānugate: hanging close | gireḥ: to a mountain. |

TRANSLATION

That terrific army of monkeys, with uplifted rocks and tress in their hands, shone like a big collection of gigantic clouds, hanging close to a mountain.
