Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

स प्रविश्य पुरीम् लङ्काम् रामबाणभयार्दितः
भग्नदर्पस्तदा राजा बभूव व्यथितेन्द्रियः

sa praviśya purīm laṅkām rāmabāṇabhayārditaḥ
bhagnadarpastadā rājā babhūva vyathitendriyaḥ

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | saḥ: that | rājā: King of Demons | praviśya: after entering | laṅkām purīm: the city of Lanka | rāma bāṇabhayārditaḥ: afflicted with the fear of Rama's arrows | bhagnadarpaḥ: his pride humbled | babhūva: became | vyathi tendriyaḥ: troubled in his senses. |

TRANSLATION

Returning to the City of Lanka, Ravana the King of Demons was afflicted with the fear of Rama's arrows, his pride was humbled and his senses troubled.

VERSE 2

मातङ्ग इव सिम्हेन गरुडेनेव पन्नगः
अभिभूतो।अभवद्राजा राघवेण महात्मना

mātaṅga iva simhena garuḍeneva pannagaḥ
abhibhūto|abhavadrājā rāghaveṇa mahātmanā

SYNONYMS

rājā: that King | abhavat: was | abhibhūtaḥ: overcome | mahātmanā: by the high-souled | rāghaveṇa: Rama | mātaṅgaḥ iva: like an elephant | simhena: by a lion | pannagaḥ iva: or like a serpent | garuḍena: by an eagle. |

TRANSLATION

The king was overcome by the high-souled Rama, like an elephant is by a lion or a serpent by an eagle.

VERSE 3

ब्रह्मदण्डप्रतीकानाम् विद्युच्चलितवर्चसाम्
स्मतन् राघवबाणानाम् विव्यथे राक्षसेश्वरः

brahmadaṇḍapratīkānām vidyuccalitavarcasām
smatan rāghavabāṇānām vivyathe rākṣaseśvaraḥ

SYNONYMS

rākṣaseśvaraḥ: the lord of Demons | vivyathe: was maddened | smaran: in recollecting | rāghava bāṇānām: Rama's arrows | brahma daṅḍapratīkānām: resembling the Rod of Brahma the Lord of creation | vidyuccalita varcasām: and possessed of the splendour of lightning. |

TRANSLATION

The Lord of Demons was maddened in recollecting Rama's arrows resembling the Rod of Brahma the Lord of creation and possessed of the splendour of lightning.

VERSE 4

स काञ्चनमयम् दिव्यमाश्रित्य परमासनम्
विप्रेक्षमाणो रक्षांसि रावणो वाक्यमब्रवीत्

sa kāñcanamayam divyamāśritya paramāsanam
viprekṣamāṇo rakṣāṃsi rāvaṇo vākyamabravīt

SYNONYMS

āśritya: resting on | paramāsanam: an excellen throne | kāṅcanamayan: made of gold | divyam: and charming | rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | viprekṣamāṇaḥ: looking | rakṣāmsi: at the demons | abravīt: spoke | vākyam: (the following) words. |

TRANSLATION

Resting on an excellent and charming throne made of gold, Ravana looked at the demons and spoke the following words:

VERSE 5

सर्वम् तत्खलु मे मोघम् यत्तप्तम् परमम् तपः
यत्समानो महेन्द्रेण मानुषेण विनिर्जितः

sarvam tatkhalu me mogham yattaptam paramam tapaḥ
yatsamāno mahendreṇa mānuṣeṇa vinirjitaḥ

SYNONYMS

tat sarvam: all that | paramam: great | tapaḥ: penance | yat: for | taptam: was performed | me: by me | mogham khalu: was indeed in vain | mahendreṇa samānaḥ: I who am equal to Mahendra the Lord of celestials | vinirjitaḥ: have been defeated | mānuṣeṇa: by a mere man!. |

TRANSLATION

"All that great penance performed by me became a waste indeed, for, I who am equal to Mahendra the Lord of Celestials have been defeated by a mere man!"

VERSE 6

इदम् तद्ब्रह्मणो घोरम् वाक्यम् मामभ्युपस्थितम्
मानुषेभ्यो विजानीहि भयम् त्वमिति तत्तथा

idam tadbrahmaṇo ghoram vākyam māmabhyupasthitam
mānuṣebhyo vijānīhi bhayam tvamiti tattathā

SYNONYMS

idam: these | ghoram: terrible | vākyam: words | brahmaṇaḥ: of Brahma the Lord of creation | iti: saying that | tvam: you | vijānīhi: know | bhayam: of the threat | mānuṣebhyaḥ: from men | upasthitam: appear (true) | mām: to me | tat: that | tathā: is so. |

TRANSLATION

"The terrible words of Brahma the Lord of Creation saying, 'You know of the threat from men' appear true. That is so."

VERSE 7

देवदानवगन्धर्वैर्यक्षराक्षसपन्नगैः
अवध्यत्वम् मया प्राप्तम् मानुषेभ्यो न याचितम्

devadānavagandharvairyakṣarākṣasapannagaiḥ
avadhyatvam mayā prāptam mānuṣebhyo na yācitam

SYNONYMS

prāptam: (The boon) was obtained | mayā: by me | avadhyatvam: for not to be slain | devadānava gandharvaiḥ: by celestials | yakṣarāṣasa pannagaiḥ: or sam-divine beings or demons or serpent-demons | nayācitam: but not asked | mānuṣebhyaḥ: from men. |

TRANSLATION

"I sought immunity from death at the hands of celestials, titans or celestials musicians, or semi divine beings or demons or serpent-demons, but f man I made no mention."

VERSE 8

विदितम् मानुषम् मन्ये रामं दशरथात्मजम्
इक्ष्वाकुकुलजातेन अनर्ण्येन यत् पुरा

viditam mānuṣam manye rāmaṃ daśarathātmajam
ikṣvākukulajātena anarṇyena yat purā

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

"Rama the son of Dasaratha is the man I think of whom Anaranya born of Ikshvaku dynasty formerly spoke, saying: 'O, the worst of demons, the worst of your race and the wretched one! In my race will be born a man who will slay you in battle with your sons, ministers, army, horses and charioteer."

VERSE 10

शप्तो।अहम् वेदवत्या च यदा सा धर्षिता पुरा

śapto|aham vedavatyā ca yadā sā dharṣitā purā

SYNONYMS

aham: I | śaptaḥ: was cursed | vedavatyā: by Vedavati | yadā: when | : that | dharṣitā: was humiliated | purā: before | iyam: same Vedavati | jātā: is born | sītā: as Seetha | mahābhāgā: the highly fortunate one | janakanandinī: and the daughter of Janaka. |

TRANSLATION

"Further, I was formerly cursed by Vedavati when she was humiliated by me. The same Vedavati is born as the highly fortunate Seetha the daughter of Janaka."

VERSE 11

उमा नन्दीश्वरश्चापि रम्भा वरुणकन्यका

umā nandīśvaraścāpi rambhā varuṇakanyakā

SYNONYMS

yathā: how | umā: parvati the consort of Shiva | nandīśvaraścāpi: lord Nandi the attendant of Shiva | rambhā: Rambha wife of Nala-Kubara | varuṇakanyakā: Varuna's daughter | uktāḥ: told | tat: that | prāptam: has been obtained | mayā: by me | ṛṣibhāṣitam: the words uttered by sages | na: are not | mithyam: untrue. |

TRANSLATION

"What was predicted by Parvati the consort of Shiva, Nandishvara the attendant of Shiva, Rambha the wife of Nalakubara and Punjikasthala the daughter of Varunda has come to pass! The words of the sages never prove false."

VERSE 12

एतदेवाभ्युपागम्य यत्नम् कर्तुमहार्हथ

etadevābhyupāgamya yatnam kartumahārhatha

SYNONYMS

etat eva: on account of all this | abhyupāgamya: and admitting it | arhathā: effort | iha: in this matter | rākṣasāścāpi: (Let) the demons | tiṣṭhantu: be stationed | caryāgopura mūrdhasu: on the summit of Charya Mountian. |

TRANSLATION

"On account of all this and admitting it, you should exert yourselves to the uttermost. Let the demons go to the summit of Charya Mountain."

VERSE 13

स चाप्रतिमगाम्भीर्यो देवदानवदर्पहा

sa cāpratimagāmbhīryo devadānavadarpahā

SYNONYMS

vibodhyatām: Awaken | saḥ: that | kumbhakarṇaḥ: Kumbhakarna | apratimagāmbhīryaḥ: who is without equal in prowess | devadānava darpahā: who humbles the pride of the celestials and demons | brahma śāpābhibhūtaḥ: and on whom the curse of Brahma the Lord of Creation rests. |

TRANSLATION

"Awaken that kumbhakarna, who is without equal in prowess, who humbles the pride of the celestials and demons, and on whom the curse of Brahma the Lord of creation rests."

VERSE 14

समरे जितमात्मानम् प्रहस्तम् च निषूदितम्

samare jitamātmānam prahastam ca niṣūditam

SYNONYMS

jñātvā: having known (that) | prahastam: Prahasta | niṣūditam: being slain | saḥ: and that king | mahābalaḥ: the mighty one | ātmānam: himself | jitam: being defeated | samare: in battle | ādideśa: issued his commands | bhīmam: to the dreadful | balam: army (saying) |

TRANSLATION

Having known that Prahasta being slain and knowing himself to have been defeated in the battle, Ravana issued his commands tot he dreadful army, saying:

VERSE 15

द्वारेषु यत्नः क्रियताम् प्राकारश्चाधिरुह्यताम्

dvāreṣu yatnaḥ kriyatām prākāraścādhiruhyatām

SYNONYMS

kriyatām: guard | dvāreṣu: the gates | yatnaḥ: with care | adhiruhyatām: and ascend | prākāraśca: the ramparts | vibodhyatām: rouse | kumbhakarṇaḥ: Kumbhakarna | nidrāvaśa samāviṣṭaḥ: who is slumbering soundly. |

TRANSLATION

"Guard the gates with utmost care. Man the ramparts. Rouse Kumbhakarna who is slumbering soundly."

VERSE 16

सुखम् स्वपिति निश्चिन्तः कालोपहतचेतनः

sukham svapiti niścintaḥ kālopahatacetanaḥ

SYNONYMS

rākṣasaḥ: Kumbhakarna | svapiti: is sleeping | sukham: happily | kālopahata cetanaḥ: his understannding vitiated by lust | niścintaḥ: free from all anxieties | nava: for mine | sapta: seven | daśa: ten | aṣṭauca: or eight | māsān: months. |

TRANSLATION

"Kumbhakarna is sleeping happily, his understanding vitiated by lust and free from all anxieties. The demon sleeps for nine, seven, ten or eight months.

VERSE 17

मन्त्रम् कृत्वा प्रसुप्तो।अयमिअस्तु नवमे।अहनि

mantram kṛtvā prasupto|ayamiastu navame|ahani

SYNONYMS

kṛtvā: having me | mantram: in consultation (with me) | navame: on the nineth | ahani: day | itam: before | ayam: he | prasuptaḥ: has since fallen asleep | bodhayata: Awaken | kśīpram: quickly | tam: that | mahābalam: mighty | kumbhakarṇam: Kumbhakarna. |

TRANSLATION

"Having deliberated with me nine days ago, he has since fallen asleep. Awaken quickly that mighty Kumbhakarna."

VERSE 18

स हि सम्ख्ये महाबाहुः ककुदम् सर्वरक्षसाम्

sa hi samkhye mahābāhuḥ kakudam sarvarakṣasām

SYNONYMS

saḥ: Kumbhakarna | kakudam: the foremost | sarvarākṣasām: of all demons | mahābāhuḥ: and the mighty armed | haniṣyati: will kill kSiprameva = quickly | vānarān: the monkeys | rājaputrauca: and the princes | samkhye: in the battle. |

TRANSLATION

"The mighty armed Kumbhakarna, the foremost of all demons will kill the monkeys and the two princes at once in the battle."

VERSE 19

एष केतुः परं सम्ख्ये मुख्ये वै सर्वरक्षसाम्

eṣa ketuḥ paraṃ samkhye mukhye vai sarvarakṣasām

SYNONYMS

eṣaḥ kumbhakarṇaḥ: this Kumbhakarna | mukhyaḥ: the chief | sarva rakṣasām: among all the demons | param: a great | ketuḥ: mark | samkhye: in the battle | sadā: is always | śete: sleeping | mūḍhāḥ: a stupid | rataḥ: being fond | grāmya sukhe: of a rustic comfort. |

TRANSLATION

"This Kumbhakarna, the chief among all the demons and a great mark in the battle, being fond of a rustic comfort, is always sleeping stupidly."

VERSE 20

रामेणाभिनिरस्तस्य सम्ग्रामे।अस्मिन् सुदारुणे

rāmeṇābhinirastasya samgrāme|asmin sudāruṇe

SYNONYMS

kumbhakarṇe: (If) Kumbhakarna | vibodhite: is awaken | na bhaviṣyati: there will be no | śokaḥ: grief | me: for me | abhinirastasya: who has been defeated | rāmeṇa: by Rama | asmin: in this | sudāruṇe: highly terrific | samgrāme: battle. |

TRANSLATION

"If Kumbhakarna is awaken, there will be no worry for me, who stand defeated by Rama in this highly terrific battle."

VERSE 21

किम् करिष्याम्यहम् तेन शक्रतुल्यबलेन हि

kim kariṣyāmyaham tena śakratulyabalena hi

SYNONYMS

kim: what | aham kariṣyāmi: will I do | tena: with him | yaḥ: who | śakratulya: Lord of Celestials | na kalpate: cannot | sāhāyya: help | īdṛśe: in such | ghore: a dreadful | vyasane: calamity? |

TRANSLATION

"What is the use of him, who possessing a strength equal to that of Indra the Lord of celestials, cannot help me in such a dreadful catastrophe?"

VERSE 22

ते तु तद्वचनम् श्रुत्वा राक्षसेन्द्रस्य राक्षसाः

te tu tadvacanam śrutvā rākṣasendrasya rākṣasāḥ

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | tat vākyam: those words | rākṣasendrasya: of Ravana the Lord of Demons | te: those | rākṣasāḥ: demons | parama sambhrāntāḥ: very briskly | jagmuḥ: went | kumbhakarṇa niveśanam: to the abode of Kumbhakarna. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those words of Ravana, those demons very briskly went to the abode of Kumbhakarna.

VERSE 23

ताम् प्रविश्य महाद्वाराम् सर्वतो योजनायताम्

tām praviśya mahādvārām sarvato yojanāyatām

SYNONYMS

24| praviśya: entering | ramyām: the beautiful | kumbhakarṇaguhām: cave of Kumbhakarna | mahādvārām: with a large door | yoganāyatām: having an area of Yojana (About 9 miles x 9 miles) | sarvato: on all sides | puṣpagandhapravāhinīm: bearing a floral perfume | avadhūtāḥ: (thought) shaken off | kumbhakarṇasya: by Kumbakarna's | niḥśvāsāt: breaths | mahābalāḥ: the demons | yatnāt: with exertion | pratiṣṭhamānāḥ: remained stable | kṛcchreṇa: with difficulty | praviviśuḥ: went into | guhām: the cave. |

TRANSLATION

Entering the beautiful cave of Kumbhakarna, with a large door, having an area of a Yojana on all sides and bearing a floral perfume, the demons of mighty strength, though shaken off by Kumbhakarna's breaths, remained stable forcefully with difficulty and went into the cave.

VERSE 25

ताम् प्रविश्य गुहाम् रम्याम् रत्नकाञ्चनकुट्टिमाम्

tām praviśya guhām ramyām ratnakāñcanakuṭṭimām

SYNONYMS

praviśya: entering | tām: that | ramyām: beautiful | guhām: cave | ratna kāṇcana kuṭṭimām: inlaid with diamonds and gold | nairṛta ryāghrāḥ: those tigers among demons | dadṛśuḥ: saw | bhīmavikramam: Kumbhakarna of terrific prowess | śayanām: who was sleeping. |

TRANSLATION

Entering that beautiful cave inlaid with diamonds and gold, those tigers among demons beheld Kumbhakarna, of terrific prowess, who was sleeping.

VERSE 26

ते तु तम् विकृतम् सुप्तम् विकीर्णमिव पर्वतम्

te tu tam vikṛtam suptam vikīrṇamiva parvatam

SYNONYMS

te: they | sametāḥ: together | pratyabodhayam: tried to awaken | kumbhakarṇam: Kumbhakarna | suptam: who was sleeping | vikṛtam: nastily | vikīrṇam parvatam ive: like a spread-out mountain | mahānidram: in a great slumber. |

TRANSLATION

They together tried to awaken Kumbhakarna who was sleeping nastily like a spread-out mountain in a great slumber.

VERSE 27

ऊर्ध्वलोमाञ्चिततनुम् श्वसन्तमिव पन्नगम्

ūrdhvalomāñcitatanum śvasantamiva pannagam

SYNONYMS

29| ūrdhva lomāṇcita tanum: his limbs covered with down which stood on end | śvasantam: breathing | pannagamiva: like a serpent | śayānam: as he slept | bhīmavikramam: Kumbhakarna of irresistible valour | bhrāmayantam: brandishing | viniḥśvāsaiḥ: dreadful snores | bhīmanāsāpuṭam: his nostrils being horrible | pātāla vipulānanam: and his mouth a gaping hell | nyasta sarvāṇgam: stretched to his full length of body | śayane: while lying down | medorudhiragandhinam: giving forth an odour of marrow and blood | kāṅcanāṇga danaddhāṅgam: his limbs adorned with goldedn armlets | kirīṭena: wearing a diadem | arkavarcasam: as bright as the sun | tam kumbhakarṇam: that Kumbhakarna | nairṛta vyāghram: the lion among demons | arindanam: and the slayer of his foes | dadṛśuḥ: (they) saw. |

TRANSLATION

His limbs covered with down which stood on end, breathing like a serpent, as he slept, Kumbhakarna of irresistible valour emitted dreadful snores, his nostrils being horrible, and his mouth a gaping hell. Stretched to his full length on the earth, he gave forth an odour of marrow and blood, his limbs were adorned with golden armlets and he wore a diadem as bright as the sun, thus did that lion among demons, Kumbhakarna, the slayer of his foes, appear!

VERSE 30

ततश्चक्रुर्महात्मानः कुम्भकर्णस्य चाग्रातः

tataścakrurmahātmānaḥ kumbhakarṇasya cāgrātaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | mahātmānaḥ: those powerful demons | parama taraṇam: in order to satisfy him excellently | cakruḥ: made | rāśim: a heap | bhūtānām: of (hunted) being | merusamkāśam: as high as mount Meru agrataH = in front | kumbhakarṇasya: of Kumbhakarna. |

TRANSLATION

Then, those powerful demons, in order to satisfy him, placed a heap of venison as high as Mount Meru, in front of Kumbhakarna.

VERSE 31

मृगाणाम् महिषाणाम् च वराहाणाम् च संचयान्

mṛgāṇām mahiṣāṇām ca varāhāṇām ca saṃcayān

SYNONYMS

nairṛtaśārdūlāḥ: those lions among demons | cakruḥ: made | samahayān: a great mass | adbhutam annam: of wonderful food | mṛgāṇām: with deers | mahiṣāṇām ca: buffaloes | varāhaṇām ca: and pigs. |

TRANSLATION

Those excellent demons piled up a great mass of wonderful food with the meat of deers, buffaloes and pigs.

VERSE 32

ततः शोणितकुम्भांश्च मांसानि विविधानि च

tataḥ śoṇitakumbhāṃśca māṃsāni vividhāni ca

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | tridaśa śatravaḥ: the demons | cakruḥ: made | śoṇita kumbhāśca: pots of blood | vividhāni: various kinds | māmsāni: of meats | purastāt: in front | kumbhakarṇasya: of Kumbhakarna. |

TRANSLATION

Then, the demons placed pots of blood and various kinds of meat in front of Kumbhakarna.

VERSE 33

लिलिपुश्च परार्ध्येन चन्दनेन परम्तपम्

lilipuśca parārdhyena candanena paramtapam

SYNONYMS

lilipuḥ: (They) rubbed | paramtapam: that scourge of his foes | parārdhyena: with the most rare | candanena: sandalwood | āśvāsa yāmāsuḥ: and refreshed him | divyaiḥ: with celestials | gandhibhiḥ: and fragrant | mālyaiḥ: garlands | gandhaiḥ ca: and sweet-smelling perfumes. |

TRANSLATION

They rubbed Kumbhakarna the scourge of his foes with the most rare sandalwood and refreshed him with celestial and fragrant garlands as well as sweet-smelling perfumes.

VERSE 34

धूपगन्धांश्च ससृजुस्तुष्टुवुश्च परम्तपम्

dhūpagandhāṃśca sasṛjustuṣṭuvuśca paramtapam

SYNONYMS

yātudhānāḥ: the demons | sasṛjuḥ: created | dhūpagandhān ca: the burnt incense | tuṣṭuvuśca: and hymned the praises | paramtapam: of that warrior who proved fatal to his foes | āneduḥ ca: (they) cried out noises | tatastataḥ: on every side | jaladāḥ iva: like thunder of clouds. |

TRANSLATION

They burnt incenses and hymned the praises of that warrior who proved fatal to his foes. They cried out noises which burst forth on every side like thunder.

VERSE 35

शङ्खांश्च पूरयामासुः शशाङ्कसदृशप्रभान्

śaṅkhāṃśca pūrayāmāsuḥ śaśāṅkasadṛśaprabhān

SYNONYMS

pūrayāmāsuḥ: (They) blew | śaṅkhān: couches | śaśāṅka sadṛśa prabhān: as bright as the moon | amarṣitāḥ: and with impatience | vineduḥ ca api: made sounds | tumulam: tumultuously | yugapat: all at once. |

TRANSLATION

They blew couches which were as bright as the moon and with impatience, made with impatience, made sounds tumultuously all at once.

VERSE 36

नेदुरास्फोटयामासुश्चिक्षिपुस्ते निशाचराः

nedurāsphoṭayāmāsuścikṣipuste niśācarāḥ

SYNONYMS

te niśācarāḥ: those demons | neduḥ: made sounds | kumbhakarṇa vibodhārtham: in order to awaken Kumbhakarna | āsphoṭayāmāsuḥ: clapped their hands | cikṣupuḥ: and shook him | cakruḥ: made | vipulam: a great | svanam: clamour. |

TRANSLATION

Those demons made sounds by clapping their hands, in order to awaken Kumbhakarna and shook him too, creating a great clamour.

VERSE 37

सशङ्खभेरीपणवप्रणाद
मास्फोटितक्ष्वेलितसिम्हनादम्
दिशो द्रवन्तस्त्रिदिवम् किरन्तः
श्रुत्वा विहम्गाः सहसा निपेतुः

saśaṅkhabherīpaṇavapraṇāda
māsphoṭitakṣvelitasimhanādam
diśo dravantastridivam kirantaḥ
śrutvā vihamgāḥ sahasā nipetuḥ

SYNONYMS

vihamgāḥ: the birds | kirantaḥ: passing through | tridivam: the sky | dravantah: ran | diśaḥ: (to different) quarters | nipetuḥ: and fell down | sahasā: soon | śrutvā: on hearing | saśaṇkha bherīpaṇava praṇādam: the sound of the couches | āsphoṭitakṣvelita simhanādam: clapping of hands and leonine roars. |

TRANSLATION

The birds passing through the sky ran helter-shelter and fell down soon on hearing the sounds of the couches, drums, gongs, clapping of hands and leonine roars.

VERSE 38

यदा भृशम् तैर्निनदैर्महात्मा
न कम्भकर्णो बुबुधे प्रसुप्तः
ततो भुशुण्डीर्मुसलानि सर्वे
रक्षोगणास्तम् जगृहुर्गदाश्च

yadā bhṛśam tairninadairmahātmā
na kambhakarṇo bubudhe prasuptaḥ
tato bhuśuṇḍīrmusalāni sarve
rakṣogaṇāstam jagṛhurgadāśca

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

As the illustrious Kumbhakarna did not waken from his slumber despite those great sounds, all troops of demons seized hold of bars, pestles and maces towards him.

VERSE 39

तम् शैलशृङ्गेर्मुसलैर्गदाभि
र्वक्षःस्थले मुद्गरमुष्टिभिश्च
सुखप्रसुप्तम् भुवि कुम्भकर्णम्
रक्षांस्युदग्राणि तदा निजघ्नः

TRANSLATION

Then, the cruel demons struck that sleeping Kumbhakarna on his chest with mountain-tops, pestles, maces, hammers and their fists.

VERSE 40

तस्य निःश्वासवातेन कुम्भकर्णस्य रक्षसः
राक्षसा बलवन्तो।अपि स्थातुम् शेकुर्न चाग्रतः

tasya niḥśvāsavātena kumbhakarṇasya rakṣasaḥ
rākṣasā balavanto|api sthātum śekurna cāgrataḥ

ततः परिहिता गाढम् राक्षसा भीमविक्रमाः
मृदङ्गपणवान् भेरीः शङ्खकुम्भगणांस्तथा

tataḥ parihitā gāḍham rākṣasā bhīmavikramāḥ
mṛdaṅgapaṇavān bherīḥ śaṅkhakumbhagaṇāṃstathā

Then, the terribly strong demons firmly seated themselves round him and began to beat drums, cymbals, kettle-drums and myriads of couches and trumpets.

VERSE 42

दश राक्षससाहस्रम् युगपत्पर्यवारयत्
नीलञ्जनचयाकारम् ते तु तम् प्रत्य्बोधयन्

daśa rākṣasasāhasram yugapatparyavārayat
nīlañjanacayākāram te tu tam pratybodhayan

TRANSLATION

Ten thousand demons surrounded him all at once. Beating that colossus who resembled a heap of antimony, the demons on their part tried to rouse him by making sounds. Even then, he did not wake.

VERSE 43

यदा चैनम् न शेकुस्ते प्रतिबोधयितुम् तदा

yadā cainam na śekuste pratibodhayitum tadā

SYNONYMS

yadā: when | te: they | na śekuḥ: were unable | patibodhayitum: to rouse | enam: him | tadā: then | samupākraman: they began | tataḥ guru taram: with a more energetic | dāruṇam: and ruthless | yatnam: endeavour. |

As they were unable to rouse him by these means, they resorted to more energetic and ruthless methods.

VERSE 44

अश्वानुष्ट्रान् खरान्नागान् जघ्नर्दण्डकशाङ्कुशैः

aśvānuṣṭrān kharānnāgān jaghnardaṇḍakaśāṅkuśaiḥ

TRANSLATION

They beat horses, camels, donkeys, and elephants with sticks whips and thongs, so that they trample upon him and blasted kettle-drums, couches and drums.

VERSE 45

निजघ्नश्चास्य गात्राणि महाकाष्ठकटम्करैः

nijaghnaścāsya gātrāṇi mahākāṣṭhakaṭamkaraiḥ

तेन नादेन महाअ लङ्का समभिपूरिता

tena mahatā mādena: by that great noise | sambhipūritā: was filled | sarvā: the entire | laṅkā: Lanka | saparvatavanā: along with its mountains and groves | saḥ api: he nevertheless | naiva prabudhyati: did not wake. |

The entire Lanka, with its mountain and groves, was filled with great noise. He nevertheless did not wake.

VERSE 47

ततः सहस्रम् भेरीणाम् युगपत्समहन्यत

tataḥ sahasram bherīṇām yugapatsamahanyata

एवनओततुबुद्रस्त्य् तदा बौव ओरव्य्द्ग्तत

mahākrodhasamāviṣṭāḥ sarve bhīmaparākramāḥ

अन्ये भेरीः समाजघ्नरन्ये चक्रुर्महास्वनम्

anye bherīḥ samājaghnaranye cakrurmahāsvanam

उदकुम्भशतान्यन्ये समसिञ्चन्त कर्णयोः

न कुम्भकर्णः पस्पन्दे महानिद्रावशम् गतः

na kumbhakarṇaḥ paspande mahānidrāvaśam gataḥ

रज्जुबन्धनबद्धाभिः शतग्नीभिश्च सर्वशः

rajjubandhanabaddhābhiḥ śatagnībhiśca sarvaśaḥ

Though smitten by missiles fastened with ropes on all sides, the giant bodied demon did not wake.

VERSE 54

वारणानाम् सहस्रम् च शरीरे।अस्य प्रधावितम्

vāraṇānām sahasram ca śarīre|asya pradhāvitam

SYNONYMS

sahasram: a thousand | vāraṇānām: elephants | pradhāritam: ran up and down | asya: on his | śarīre: body | tadā: then | kumbhakarṇaḥ: Kumbhakarna | buddhvā: lightly waking up | abudhyata: became aware | sparśam param: of the pressure. |

TRANSLATION

A thousand elephants ran up and down on his body till Kumbhakarna lightly woke up and became aware of the pressure.

VERSE 55

स पात्यमानैर्गिरिशृङ्गवृक्षै
रचिन्तयंस्तान्विपुलान् प्रहारान्
निद्राक्षयात् क्षुद्भयपीडितश्च
विजृम्भमाणः सहसोत्पपाप

sa pātyamānairgiriśṛṅgavṛkṣai
racintayaṃstānvipulān prahārān
nidrākṣayāt kṣudbhayapīḍitaśca
vijṛmbhamāṇaḥ sahasotpapāpa

SYNONYMS

acintayan: being insensible | tān: to those | vipulān: violent | prahārān: blows | giriśṛṇga vṛkṣaiḥ: of crags and trees | pātyamānaiḥ: hurled upon him | kṣud bhaya pīḍitaśca: but under the prompting of extreme hunger | sahasā: suddenly | utpapāta: sprung up from sleep | vijṛmbhamānaḥ: yawning | nidrākṣayāt: due to loss of sleep. |

TRANSLATION

Being insensible to those violent blows of crags and trees hurled upon him, but under the prompting of extreme hunger, Kumbhakarna suddenly sprang up from sleep, yawning due to loss of sleep.

VERSE 56

स नागभोगाचलशृङ्गकल्पौ
विक्षिप्य बाहू जितवज्रसारौ
विवृत्य वक्त्रम् वडवामुखाभम्
निशाचरो।असौ विकृतम् जजृम्भे

sa nāgabhogācalaśṛṅgakalpau
vikṣipya bāhū jitavajrasārau
vivṛtya vaktram vaḍavāmukhābham
niśācaro|asau vikṛtam jajṛmbhe

TRANSLATION

Waving his arms resembling serpent's coils or the peaks of mountains, hard as cut diamonds, that demons opening his monstrous month like unto the face of a submarine fire, yawned.

VERSE 57

तस्य जाजृम्भमाणस्य वक्त्रम् पातालसम्निभम्
दद्र्^उशे मेरुशृङ्गाग्रे दिवाकर इवोदितः

tasya jājṛmbhamāṇasya vaktram pātālasamnibham
dadr^uśe meruśṛṅgāgre divākara ivoditaḥ

SYNONYMS

VERSE 58

स जृम्भमाणो।अतिबलः प्रबुद्धस्तु निशाचरः
निःश्वासश्चास्य सम्जज्ञे पर्वदादिव मारुतः

sa jṛmbhamāṇo|atibalaḥ prabuddhastu niśācaraḥ
niḥśvāsaścāsya samjajñe parvadādiva mārutaḥ

SYNONYMS

That mighty demon, being awake, yawned, heaving a sigh, like unto a tempest arising from a mountain.

VERSE 59

रूपमुत्तिष्ठतस्तस्य कुम्भकर्णस्य तद् बभौ
युगाने सर्वभूतानि कालस्येव दिधक्षतः

rūpamuttiṣṭhatastasya kumbhakarṇasya tad babhau
yugāne sarvabhūtāni kālasyeva didhakṣataḥ

SYNONYMS

That figure of Kumbhakarna, rising up, stood out resembling Time at the dissolution of the world, prepared to devour all beings.

VERSE 60

तस्याग्निदीप्तिसदृशे विद्युत्सदृशवर्चसी
ददृशाते महानेत्रे दीप्ताविव महाग्रहौ

tasyāgnidīptisadṛśe vidyutsadṛśavarcasī
dadṛśāte mahānetre dīptāviva mahāgrahau

SYNONYMS

tasya mahānetre: his huge eyes | agnidīpti sadṛśe: resembling flames of fire | vidyutsadṛśavarcasī: with a glitter equal to that of lightning | dadṛśāte: appeared | dīptau mahāgrahau iva: like blazing great planets. |

His huge eyes, resembling flames of fire, with a glitter equal to that of lightning, appeared like great blazing planets.

VERSE 62

ततस्त्वदर्शयन् सर्वान् भक्ष्यांश्च विविधान् बहून्
वराहान् महिषांश्चैव बभक्ष स महाबलः

tatastvadarśayan sarvān bhakṣyāṃśca vividhān bahūn
varāhān mahiṣāṃścaiva babhakṣa sa mahābalaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | adarśayan: (the demons) pointed out | vividhān: various kinds | bahūvn: of many | sarve: and all pieces | bhakṣyānca: of eatables | varāhān: boar | mahiṣāmśca: and buffaloes | mahābalaḥ: the mighty | saḥ: Kumbhakarna | babhakṣa: devoured (them). |

TRANSLATION

Then, the demons pointed to various kinds of victuals, boar and buffalo. The mighty Kumbhakarna devoured them.

VERSE 63

आदद्बुभुक्षितो मांसम् शोणितम् तृषितो।अपिबत्
मेदःकुम्भांश्च मद्यांश्च पपौ शक्ररिपुस्तदा

ādadbubhukṣito māṃsam śoṇitam tṛṣito|apibat
medaḥkumbhāṃśca madyāṃśca papau śakraripustadā

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | buhukṣitaḥ: the hungry | śakraripuḥ: Kumbhakarna the enemy of Indra | ādat: ate | māmsam: the meat | tṛṣitaḥ: and being thirsty | apibat: drank | śoṇitam: the blood | papau: and gulped | medaḥ kumbhāmśca: pitchers full of fat | madyāmśca: and wine. |

TRANSLATION

Then, the hungry Kumbhakarna, the enemy of Indra, ate the meat and being thirsty drank the blood and gulped pitchers full of fat and wine.

VERSE 64

ततस्तृप्त इति ज्ञात्वा समुत्पेरुर्निशाचराः
शिरोभिश्च प्रणम्यैनम् सर्वतः पर्यवारयन्

tatastṛpta iti jñātvā samutperurniśācarāḥ
śirobhiśca praṇamyainam sarvataḥ paryavārayan

SYNONYMS

Thereupon, knowing that Kumbhakarna was gratified of his hunger, the demons approached him, saluting him with their heads bent and surrounded him on all sides.

निद्राविशदनेत्रस्तु कलुषीकृतलोचनः
चारयन् सर्वतो दृष्टिम् तानुवाच निशाचरान्

nidrāviśadanetrastu kaluṣīkṛtalocanaḥ
cārayan sarvato dṛṣṭim tānuvāca niśācarān

बोधनाद्विस्मितश्चापि राक्षसानिदमब्रवीत्

sa sarvān sāntvayāmāsa nairr^tān nairṛtarṣabhaḥ
bodhanādvismitaścāpi rākṣasānidamabravīt

SYNONYMS

VERSE 66

किमर्थमहामादृत्य भवद्भिः प्रतिबोधितः
कच्चित्सुकुशलम् राज्ञो भयम् वा नेह किंचन्

kimarthamahāmādṛtya bhavadbhiḥ pratibodhitaḥ
kaccitsukuśalam rājño bhayam vā neha kiṃcan

SYNONYMS

kimartham: for what reason | aham: have I | pratibodhitaḥ: been awakened | bhavadbhiḥ: by you | ādṛtya: so suddenly? | sukuśalam kaccit: is all well | rāñaḥ: with the king? | : or | kimcana: is there anything | na: not | bhayam: peril | iha: here?. |

TRANSLATION

"For what reason have you thus wakened me so suddenly? Is all well with the king or anything in peril here?"

VERSE 67

अथवा ध्रुवमन्येभ्यो भयम् परमुपस्थितम्
यदर्थमेव त्वरिरैर्भवद्भिः प्रतिबोधितः

athavā dhruvamanyebhyo bhayam paramupasthitam
yadarthameva tvarirairbhavadbhiḥ pratibodhitaḥ

SYNONYMS

अद्य राक्षसराजस्य भयमुत्पाटयाम्यहम्
दारयिष्ये महेन्द्रम् वा शीतयिष्ये तथानलम्

adya rākṣasarājasya bhayamutpāṭayāmyaham
dārayiṣye mahendram vā śītayiṣye tathānalam

SYNONYMS

adya: now | aham: I | utpāṭayāmi: shall drive away | bhayam: the misfortune | rākṣasa rājarsya: from Ravana the King of Demons | dārayiṣye: (even if) I have to cut to pieces | mahendram vā: Mahendra himself | tathā: and | śītayiṣye: to freeze | analam: the Fire. |

TRANSLATION

"Now, I shall drive away the misfortune from Ravana the King of Demons, even if I have to cut Mahendra himself to pieces or to freeze the Fire.

VERSE 69

स ह्यल्पकारणे सुप्तम् बोधयिष्यति मादृशम्
तदाख्यातार्थतत्त्वेन मत्प्रबोधनकारणम्

sa hyalpakāraṇe suptam bodhayiṣyati mādṛśam
tadākhyātārthatattvena matprabodhanakāraṇam

SYNONYMS

alpakāraṇe: for a petty reason | na bodhayiṣyati hi: one does not indeed awaken one | mādṛśam: such as I | suptam: who was sleeping | tat: hence | ākhyāta: tell me | arthatattvena: frankly | matprabodha kāraṇam: for what reason you have roused me. |

"For a petty reason, one does not indeed awaken, one such as I, from my slumber. Hence, tell me frankly, for what reason you have roused me."

VERSE 70

एवम् ब्रुवाणम् सम्रब्धम् कुम्भकर्णमरिंदमम्
यूपाक्षः सचिवो राज्ञः कृताञ्जलिरभाषत

evam bruvāṇam samrabdham kumbhakarṇamariṃdamam
yūpākṣaḥ sacivo rājñaḥ kṛtāñjalirabhāṣata

Yupaksha, a minister of the King, with his hands joined salutation, spoke (as follows) to Kumbhakarna, the annihilator of his enemies, thus talking excitedly.

VERSE 71

न नो देवकृतम् किंचिद्भयमस्ति कदाचन
मानुषान्नो भयम् राजंस्तुमुलम् सम्प्रबाधते

na no devakṛtam kiṃcidbhayamasti kadācana
mānuṣānno bhayam rājaṃstumulam samprabādhate

SYNONYMS

rājan: O | nāsti: there is no | kimcit: any | bhayam: tremor | kadācana: at any time | naḥ: for us | mānuṣāt: (but) from a man | tumulam: there is a tumultuous | samprabādhate: that is driving us back. |

"O, Prince! There is no threat whatsoever at anytime for us from celestials but a mere man is driving us back by a tumultuous tremor."

VERSE 72

न दैत्यदानवेभ्यो वा भयमस्ति हि तादृशम्
यादृशम् मानुषम् राजन् भयमस्मानुपस्थितम्

na daityadānavebhyo vā bhayamasti hi tādṛśam
yādṛśam mānuṣam rājan bhayamasmānupasthitam

SYNONYMS

rāja: O | nāstihi: It is not indeed | daitya dānavebhyo: the celestials or demons | upasthitam: who have put | asmān: us | tādṛśam: in such | bhayam: a peril | mānuṣam: from a man!. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Prince! It is not indeed the celestials or demons who have put us in such a peril as it comes to us from a man."

VERSE 73

वानरैः पर्वताकारैर्लङ्केयम् परिवारिता
सीताहरणसम्तप्ताद्रामान्नस्तुमुलम् भयम्

vānaraiḥ parvatākārairlaṅkeyam parivāritā
sītāharaṇasamtaptādrāmānnastumulam bhayam

"Monkeys, whose forms are as large as mountains, are besieging Lanka. There is a tumultuous peril for us from Rama, who is furious on account of Seetha's abduction."

VERSE 74

एकेन वानरेणेयम् पूर्वम् दग्धा महापुरी
कुमारो निहतश्चाक्षः सानुयात्रः सकुञ्जरः

ekena vānareṇeyam pūrvam dagdhā mahāpurī
kumāro nihataścākṣaḥ sānuyātraḥ sakuñjaraḥ

"Already, a single monkey set fire to our great city of slew the youthful Prince Aksha with his escort of elephants and retinue."

VERSE 75

स्वयम् रक्षोधिपश्चापि पौलस्त्यो देवकण्टकः
व्रजेति सम्युगे मुक्तो रामेणादित्यवर्चसा

svayam rakṣodhipaścāpi paulastyo devakaṇṭakaḥ
vrajeti samyuge mukto rāmeṇādityavarcasā

SYNONYMS

vraja iti: 'get thee hence' | rāmeṇa: by Rama | varcasā: who is equal to the sun in splendour | paulastyaḥ api: to Ravana | svayam: in person | rakṣodhipaḥ: the Lord of Demons | devakaṇṭakaḥ: and the troublesome person to celestials. |

TRANSLATION

" ' Get thee hence' were the words addressed by Rama who is equal to the sun in splendour, to Ravana in person the Lord of Demons and the trouble-some person to celestials."

VERSE 76

यन्न देवैः कृतो राजा नापि दैत्यैर्न दानवैः
कृतः स इह रामेण विमुक्तः प्राणसंशयात्

yanna devaiḥ kṛto rājā nāpi daityairna dānavaiḥ
kṛtaḥ sa iha rāmeṇa vimuktaḥ prāṇasaṃśayāt

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

"That which this king never suffered at the hands of Gods or Demons or Danavas, he has had to endure here from Rama, who released him from the danger to his life."

VERSE 77

स यूपाक्षवचः श्रुत्वा भ्रातुर्युधि पराभवम्
कुम्भक्र्णो विवृत्ताक्षो यूपाक्षमिदमब्रवीत्

sa yūpākṣavacaḥ śrutvā bhrāturyudhi parābhavam
kumbhakrṇo vivṛttākṣo yūpākṣamidamabravīt

Hearing about the humiliation of his brother in the battle through the words of Yupaksha, Kumbhakarna rolling his great eyes, spoke to Yupaksha (as follows):

VERSE 78

सर्वमद्यैव यूपाक्ष हरिसैन्यम् सलक्ष्मणम्
राघवम् च रणे जित्वा ततो द्रक्ष्यामि रावणम्

sarvamadyaiva yūpākṣa harisainyam salakṣmaṇam
rāghavam ca raṇe jitvā tato drakṣyāmi rāvaṇam

SYNONYMS

yūpākṣa: O | adyaiva: now itself | jitvā: after conquering | rāgjavam: Rama | salakśamaṇam: along with Lakshmana | sarvam: and the entire | harisainyam: army of monkeys | raṇe: in the battle | drakṣyāmi: I shall see | rāvaṇam: Ravana | tata: thereafter. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Yupaksha! Now itself, after conquering the entire army of monkeys with Lakshmana and Rama on the battle-field, then only I shall see Ravana."

VERSE 79

राक्षसांस्तर्पयिष्यामि हरीणाम् मांसशोणितैः
रामलक्ष्मणयोश्चापि स्वयम् पास्यामि शोणितम्

rākṣasāṃstarpayiṣyāmi harīṇām māṃsaśoṇitaiḥ
rāmalakṣmaṇayoścāpi svayam pāsyāmi śoṇitam

SYNONYMS

tarpayiṣyāmi: I shall satiate | rākṣasān: the demons | māmsaśoṇitaiḥ: with the flesh and blood | harīṇām: of the monkeys | pāsyāmi: I shall drink | svayam: myself | śoṇitam: the blood | rāmalakṣmaṇayoḥ: Rama and Lakshmana. |

TRANSLATION

"I shall satiate the demons with the flesh and blood of monkeys and, as for Rama and Lakshmana, I shall drink their blood myself."

VERSE 80

तत्तस्य वाक्यम् ब्रुवतो निशम्य
सगर्वितम् रोषविवृद्धदोषम्
महोदरो नैरृतयोधमुख्यः
कृताञ्जलिर्वाक्यमिदम् बभाषे

tattasya vākyam bruvato niśamya
sagarvitam roṣavivṛddhadoṣam
mahodaro nairṛtayodhamukhyaḥ
kṛtāñjalirvākyamidam babhāṣe

Hearing these haughty from that demon, whose anger increased his ferocity, Mahodara the chief of warriors of demons, having offered obeisance with joined palms, spoke the following words:

VERSE 81

रावणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा गुणदोषौ विमृश्य च
पश्चादपि महाबाहो शत्रून्युधि विजेष्यसि

rāvaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā guṇadoṣau vimṛśya ca
paścādapi mahābāho śatrūnyudhi vijeṣyasi

TRANSLATION

"O, the mighty armed! When you have listened to the words of Ravana and considered the advantages and disadvantages of the matter, even afterwards you can conquer the enemies in battle."

VERSE 82

महोदरवचः श्रुत्वा राक्षसैः परिवारितः
कुम्भकर्णो महातेजाः सम्प्रतस्थे महाबलः

mahodaravacaḥ śrutvā rākṣasaiḥ parivāritaḥ
kumbhakarṇo mahātejāḥ sampratasthe mahābalaḥ

Hearing the words of Mahodara, the might Kumbhakarna of great valour prepared to depart, surrounded by demons.

VERSE 83

सुप्तमुत्थाप्य भीमाक्षम् भीमरूपपराक्रमम्
राक्षसास्त्वरिता जग्मुर्दशग्रीवनिवेशनम्

suptamutthāpya bhīmākṣam bhīmarūpaparākramam
rākṣasāstvaritā jagmurdaśagrīvaniveśanam

SYNONYMS

rākṣasāḥ: the demons | utthāprya: having awaken | suptam: that sleeping Kumbhakarna | bhīmākṣam: of dreadful eyes | bhīmarūpa parākramam: with formidable aspect and valour | jagmuḥ: went | daśagrīva niveśanam: to the king's palace | tvaritāḥ: in haste. |

TRANSLATION

The demons, having awaken that sleeping Kumbhakarna of dreadful eyes, form and valour, went to the King's palace in haste.

VERSE 84

ते।अभिगम्य दशग्रीवमासीनम् परमासने
ऊचुर्बद्धाञ्जलिपुटाः सर्व एव निशाचराः

te|abhigamya daśagrīvamāsīnam paramāsane
ūcurbaddhāñjalipuṭāḥ sarva eva niśācarāḥ

VERSE 85

कुम्भकर्णः प्रबुद्धो।असौ भ्राता ते राक्षसेश्वर
कथम् तत्रैव निर्यातु द्रक्ष्यसे तमिहागतम्

kumbhakarṇaḥ prabuddho|asau bhrātā te rākṣaseśvara
katham tatraiva niryātu drakṣyase tamihāgatam

SYNONYMS

rākṣaseśvara: O | asau kumbhakarnaḥ: this Kumbhakarna | te bhrātā: your brother | prabuddhaḥ: has wakened | niryātu katham: (It is your will) that he should enter the battle field | tatraiva: from there itself | drakṣyase: or do you desire to see | tam: him | āgatam: who came | iha: here?. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Lord of Demons! Kumbhakarna, your brother, has wakened. Is it your will that he should enter the battle field from there itself or do you desire him to come here and see you?"

VERSE 86

रावणस्त्वब्रवीद्धृष्टो राक्षसांस्तानुपस्थितान्
द्रष्टुमेनमिहेच्छामि यथान्यायम् च पूज्यताम्

rāvaṇastvabravīddhṛṣṭo rākṣasāṃstānupasthitān
draṣṭumenamihecchāmi yathānyāyam ca pūjyatām

SYNONYMS

rāvaṇastu: Ravana on his part | abravīt: answered | tān: those | rākṣasān: demons | upasthitam: who stood before him | hṛṣṭaḥ: and with a glad heart | icchami: I want | draṣṭum: to see | enam: him | iha: here | pūjyatām: let hi receive the honours | yathānyāyam: in a befitting manner. |

TRANSLATION

Ravana answered those demons who stood before him and with a glad heart, said: "I want to see him here. Bring him after extending the honours due to him in a befitting manner."

VERSE 87

तथेत्युक्त्वा तु ते सर्वे पुनरागम्य राक्षसाः
कुम्भकर्णमिदम् वाक्यमूचू रावणचोदिताः

tathetyuktvā tu te sarve punarāgamya rākṣasāḥ
kumbhakarṇamidam vākyamūcū rāvaṇacoditāḥ

SYNONYMS

uktvā: uttering | tatheti: "Be it so" | sarve: all | te: those | rākṣasāḥ: demons | rāvaṇacoditāḥ: as per the command of Ravana | punaḥ āgamya: returned | kumbhakarṇam: to Kumbhakarna | ūcuḥ: and spoke | idam: these | vākyam: words. |

TRANSLATION

Uttering "Be it so", all those demons as commanded by Ravana, returned to Kumbhakarna and spoke the following words:

VERSE 88

द्रष्टुम् त्वाम् काम्क्षते राजा सर्वराक्षसपुम्गवः
गमने क्रियताम् बुद्धिर्भ्रातरम् सम्प्रहर्षय

draṣṭum tvām kāmkṣate rājā sarvarākṣasapumgavaḥ
gamane kriyatām buddhirbhrātaram sampraharṣaya

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

"The king, the lion of all the demons, desires to see you. Go and gratify your brother!"

VERSE 89

कुम्भकर्णस्तु दुर्धर्षो भ्रातुराज्ञाय शासनम्
तथेत्युक्त्वा महावीर्यः शयनादुत्पपात ह

kumbhakarṇastu durdharṣo bhrāturājñāya śāsanam
tathetyuktvā mahāvīryaḥ śayanādutpapāta ha

TRANSLATION

Hearing his brother's wish, Kumbhakarna the inviolable demon of great prowess, uttering "so be it", leapt up from his couch.

VERSE 90

प्रक्षाल्य वदनम् ह्र्^ष्टः स्नातः परमभूषितः
पिपासुस्त्वरयामास पानम् बलसमीरणम्

prakṣālya vadanam hr^ṣṭaḥ snātaḥ paramabhūṣitaḥ
pipāsustvarayāmāsa pānam balasamīraṇam

SYNONYMS

prakṣālya: washing | vadanam: his face | snātaḥ: bathing | hṛṣṭaḥ: refreshed and delighted | paramabhūṣitaḥ: adorning himself well | pipāsuḥ: and feeling thirsty | tvarayāmāsa: (he) hastened (them) | pānam: (to bring him) a drink | balasamīraṇam: which can boost up his strength. |

TRANSLATION

Washing his face and bathing, refreshed and delighted, adorning himself well and feeling thirsty, he hastened them to bring him a drink which can boost up his strength.

VERSE 91

ततस्ते त्वरितास्तत्र राक्षसा रावणाज्ञया
मद्यम् भक्ष्यांश्च विविधान् क्षिप्रमेवोपहारयन्

tataste tvaritāstatra rākṣasā rāvaṇājñayā
madyam bhakṣyāṃśca vividhān kṣipramevopahārayan

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereupon | te rākṣasāḥ: those demons | kṣiprameva: quickly | madyam: the wine | vividhān: and various kinds | bhakṣyāmśca: of eatables | tatra: there | tvaritāḥ: (and who) hastened | rāvaṇāñayā: to carry out Ravana's commands. |

TRANSLATION

Thereupon, those demons brought him quickly the wine and various kinds of eatable there, in their hurry to take Kumbhakarna with them as per Ravana's commands.

VERSE 92

पीत्वा घटसहस्रे द्वे गमनायोपचक्रमे
ईषत्समुत्कटो मत्तस्तेजोबलसमन्वितः

pītvā ghaṭasahasre dve gamanāyopacakrame
īṣatsamutkaṭo mattastejobalasamanvitaḥ

SYNONYMS

pitrā: having drunk | dve: two | ghaṭa sahasre: thousand pitchers | gamanāya upacakrame: (Kumbhakarna) prepared to set out | īṣat: and slightly | samutkaṭaḥ: inebriated | mattaḥ: and flushed | tejobalasamanvitaḥ: he was exhilarated and filled with energy. |

TRANSLATION

Having drunk two thousand pitchers, Kumbhakarna prepared to set out and slightly inebriated and flushed, he was exhilarated and filled with energy.

VERSE 93

कुम्भकर्णो बबौ रुष्टः कालान्तकयमोपमः
भ्रूतुः स भवनम् गच्छन् रक्षोबलसमन्वितः

kumbhakarṇo babau ruṣṭaḥ kālāntakayamopamaḥ
bhrūtuḥ sa bhavanam gacchan rakṣobalasamanvitaḥ

SYNONYMS

ruṣṭaḥ: the fuming | umbhakarṇaḥ: Kumbhakarna | gacchan: going | bhrātruḥ: to his brother's | bhavanam: palace | rakṣobala samanvitaḥ: along with the army of demons | babhau: appeared | kālāntaka yamopamaḥ: like Yama the Lord of Death at the end of all-destroying time | akampayata medinīm: he caused the earth to tremble | padanyāsaiḥ: with his foot-steps. |

TRANSLATION

The fuming Kumbhakarna, going to his brother's palace along with the army of demons, appeared like Yama the Lord of Death at the end of all-destroying Time. He caused the earth to tremble with his foot-steps, while marching.

VERSE 94

स राजमार्गम् वपुषा प्रकाशयन्
सहस्ररस्मिर्धरणीमिवांशुभिः
जगाम तत्राञ्जलिमालया वृतः
शतक्रतुर्गेहमिव स्वयम्भुवः

sa rājamārgam vapuṣā prakāśayan
sahasrarasmirdharaṇīmivāṃśubhiḥ
jagāma tatrāñjalimālayā vṛtaḥ
śatakraturgehamiva svayambhuvaḥ

SYNONYMS

rājamārgam: the royal highway | prakāśayan: was illumined | vapuṣā: by his body | sahasra raśmiḥ iva: like unto that orb of a thousand rays (sund) | amśubhiḥ: by its flashes | dharaṇīm: (illumines) the earth | jagāma: and he went | tatra: there | vṛtaḥ: surrounded by | aṅjalimālayā: a circle of demons paying him obeisance | śatakratuḥ: resembling Indra the Lord of Celestials | geham: (approaching) the abode | svayambhuvaḥ: of Brahma the Lord of Creation. |

TRANSLATION

The royal high way was illumined by his body, like unto that orb of a thousand rays (the sun) by its flashes illumines the earth and he went there, surrounded by a circle of demons paying obeisance, resembling Indra the Lord of Celestials approaching the abode of Brahma the Lord of Creation.

VERSE 95

तम् राजमार्गस्थममित्रघातिनम्
वनौकसस्ते सहसा बहिःस्थिताः
दृष्ट्वा।अ प्रमेयम् गिरिशृङ्गकल्पम्
वितत्रसुस्ते सह यूथपालैः

tam rājamārgasthamamitraghātinam
vanaukasaste sahasā bahiḥsthitāḥ
dṛṣṭvā|a prameyam giriśṛṅgakalpam
vitatrasuste saha yūthapālaiḥ

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | amitraghātinam: that slayer of his foes | rājamārgastham: on the royal high way | tam: that monster | giriśṛṇga kalpam: as high as the peak of a mountain | te vanaukasaḥ: those monkeys | bahiḥsthitaḥ: stationed outside (the city) | yūthapālaiḥ saha: as also their leaders | vitatrasuḥ: were frightened | sahasā: suddenly. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing that slayer of his foes on the royal high way, that monster as high as the peak of a mountain, those monkeys stationed outside the city, as also their leaders, were frightened suddenly.

VERSE 96

केचिछरण्यम् शरणम् स्म रामम्
व्रजन्ति केचिद्व्यथिताः पतन्ति
केचिद्दिशश्च व्यथिताः पतन्ति
केचिद्बयार्ताभुवि शेरते स्म

kecicharaṇyam śaraṇam sma rāmam
vrajanti kecidvyathitāḥ patanti
keciddiśaśca vyathitāḥ patanti
kecidbayārtābhuvi śerate sma

SYNONYMS

kecit: and some | śaraṇam vajrantisma: gained refuge | rāmam: in Rama | śaraṇyam: who affords protection | patantisma: fled away | vyathitā: tottering | vyathitāḥ: perturbed | diśaḥ: in all directions | śerate sma: lay | bhuvi: on the ground | bhayārtāḥ: confounded with fear. |

TRANSLATION

Some gained refuge in Rama who affords protection, some fell down tottering, some fled away perturbed in all directions and some others lay on the ground, confounded with fear.

VERSE 97

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकांडे षष्टितमः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṃḍe ṣaṣṭitamaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

prekṣya: seeing | tam adbhutam: that colossus | adri śṛṇga pratimam: like a great peak | kirīṭinam: having a diadem | spṛśantam iva: who seemed to touch | ādityam: the sun | ātma tejasā: with his brilliance | vanaukasaḥ: the monkeys | bhayārditāḥ: were seized with terror | vivṛddham: and had grown immensely in size | dudruvire: fled | yatastataḥ: hither and thither. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing that colossus appearing like a great peak, having a diadem who seemed to touch the sun with his brilliance, the monkeys were seized with terror and had grown immensely in size, fled hither and thither.
