Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

धूम्राक्षं निहतम् दृष्ट्वा रावणो राक्षसेश्वरः
क्रोधेन महताविष्टो निःश्वसन्नुरगो यथा

dhūmrākṣaṃ nihatam dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ
krodhena mahatāviṣṭo niḥśvasannurago yathā

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

Hearing the death of Dhumraksha, Ravana the King of demons was possessed of anger and began to hiss like a serpent. Polluted by anger, with long and burning sighs, he addressed the cruel and mighty Vajradamshtra, a demon (as follows)

VERSE 3

गच्छत्वं वीर निर्याहि राक्षनैः परिवारितः
जहि दाशरथिं रामं सुग्रीवं वानरैः सह

gacchatvaṃ vīra niryāhi rākṣanaiḥ parivāritaḥ
jahi dāśarathiṃ rāmaṃ sugrīvaṃ vānaraiḥ saha

SYNONYMS

vīra: O | tvam: you | gacha: proceed niryaahi = go ahead | parivāritaḥ: surrounded | rākṣasaiḥ: by demons | jahi: slay | rāmam: Rama | dāśarathim: the son of Dasaratha | sugrīvam: Sugriiva | vānaraiḥ saha: along with his monkeys! |

TRANSLATION

"O, warrior! Go ahead as the head of the demons and slay Rama the son of Dasaratha, as also Sugreeva and his monkeys!"

VERSE 4

तथेत्युक्त्वा क्रुततरं मायावी राक्षसेश्वरः
निर्जगाम बलैः सार्थं बहुभिः परिवारितः

tathetyuktvā krutataraṃ māyāvī rākṣaseśvaraḥ
nirjagāma balaiḥ sārthaṃ bahubhiḥ parivāritaḥ

SYNONYMS

5| rākṣaseśvaraḥ: that leader of the demons | māyāvī: a conjurer | uktvā: saying | tathā it: "So it be" parivaaritaH = surrounded | bahubhiḥ: by many | balaiḥ sārdham: along with the army | samyuktaḥ: accompanied | nāgaiḥ: by elephants | aśvaiḥ: horses | kharaiḥ: mules | uṣṭraiḥ: camels | rathaiḥ: and chariots | patākadhvajacitraiḥ: conspicuous with flags and banners | nirjagāma: set out | susamāhitaḥ: with a well-attentive mind | samalankṛtaḥ: and well-prepared. |

TRANSLATION

"So it be" answered the leader of the demons who was a conjurer and departed with many divisions of the army that surrounded him. With the utmost attention, he assembled teams of elephants, horses mules camels and chariots adorning them with conspicuous flags and banners and he himself was well-prepared.

VERSE 6

ततो विचित्रकेयूरमुकुटेन विभूषितः
तनुत्रं च समावृत्य सधनुर्निर्ययौ द्रुतम्

tato vicitrakeyūramukuṭena vibhūṣitaḥ
tanutraṃ ca samāvṛtya sadhanurniryayau drutam

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | vibhūṣitaḥ: adorned | vicitra keyūra mukuṭena: with colourful bracelets and a diadem | samāvṛtya: well-covered | tanutramca: by an armour | sadhanuḥ: along with a bow | drutam: immediately | nirvayau: started. |

TRANSLATION

Adorned with colourful bracelets and a diadem, Vajradamshtra set out immediately, wielding a bow and well-covered by an armour.

VERSE 7

पताकालंकृतं दीप्तं तप्तकाञ्चनभूषितम्
रथम् प्रदक्षिणम् कृत्वा समारोहच्चमूपतिः

patākālaṃkṛtaṃ dīptaṃ taptakāñcanabhūṣitam
ratham pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā samārohaccamūpatiḥ

SYNONYMS

camnupatiḥ: that army-general | pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā: circumambulated | samārohat: and ascended | ratham: his chariot | patākālamkṛtam: decorated with flags | dīptam: and shiningly | tapta kān^cana bhūṣitam: adorned with pure gold. |

TRANSLATION

That army-general circumambulated and ascended his chariot, duly decorated with flags and shiningly adorned with purpose.

VERSE 8

यष्टिभिस्तोमरैश्चित्रैः श्लक्ष्लैश्च मुसलैरपि
भिन्दिपालैश्च चापैश्च शक्तिभिः पट्टिशैरपि

yaṣṭibhistomaraiścitraiḥ ślakṣlaiśca musalairapi
bhindipālaiśca cāpaiśca śaktibhiḥ paṭṭiśairapi

SYNONYMS

9| padātayaśca: Infantry | vividhāḥ: of every kind | niryānti: issued forth | śastra pāṇayaḥ: furnished in hand with weapons | yaṣṭabhiḥ: (such as) clubs | citraiḥ: excellent | tomaraiḥ: javelins | ślakṣṇaiḥ: smooth | musalairapi: pestles | bhindipālaiśca: harpoons | cāpaiśca: bows | śaktibhiḥ: lances | paṭṭiśairapi: spears | khaḍgaiḥ: swords | cakraiḥ: discus | gadābhiśca: maces | niśitaiḥ: and sharp | paraśvadhaiḥ: axes. |

TRANSLATION

Infantry of every kind issued forth, furnished in their hands with weapons such as clubs, excellent javelins, smooth pestles, harpoons, bows, lances, spears, swords, discus, maces and sharp axes.

VERSE 10

विचित्रवाससः सर्वे दीप्ता राक्षसपुङ्गवाः
गज मदोत्कटाः शूराश्चलन्त इव पर्वता

vicitravāsasaḥ sarve dīptā rākṣasapuṅgavāḥ
gaja madotkaṭāḥ śūrāścalanta iva parvatā

SYNONYMS

sarve: all | rākṣasapuṇgarāh: those excellent demons | dīptāḥ: in their resplendent | vicitra vāsasaḥ: and coloured uniforms | śūrāḥ: full of strength | gajāḥ: on elephants | madotkaṭāḥ: furious with rut | calantaḥ: parvataaH iva = resembled moving hills. |

TRANSLATION

All those excellent demons in their resplendent and coloured uniforms, full of strength and mounted on elephants furious with rut, resembled moving mountains.

VERSE 11

ते युद्धकुशला रूढास्तोमराङ्कुवाः
अन्ये लक्षणसंयुक्ताः शूरारूढा महाबलाः

te yuddhakuśalā rūḍhāstomarāṅkuvāḥ
anye lakṣaṇasaṃyuktāḥ śūrārūḍhā mahābalāḥ

SYNONYMS

te: those elephants | rūḍhāḥ: mounted | tomarāṅkuśa pāṇibhiḥ: by warriors bearing lances and goads | yuddha kuśalāḥ: were skilled in was-fare | anye: some other elephants | lakṣaṇa samyuktāḥ: having good qualities | śūrārūḍhāḥ: mounted by valiant demons | mahābalāḥ: were mighty in strength. |

TRANSLATION

All those excellent demons in their resplendent and coloured uniforms, full of strength and mounted on elephants furious with rut, resembled moving mountains.

VERSE 12

तद्राक्षसबलं सर्वं विप्रस्थितमशोभत
प्रावृट्काले यथा मेघा नर्दमानाः सविद्युतः

tadrākṣasabalaṃ sarvaṃ viprasthitamaśobhata
prāvṛṭkāle yathā meghā nardamānāḥ savidyutaḥ

SYNONYMS

tat: that | sarvam: whole | rākṣasa balam: army of demons | viprasthitam: paraded | aśobhata: looking as brilliant | meghāḥ yathā: as the clouds | savidyutaḥ: with lightning | nardamānāḥ: and sound | prāvṛtā: they emerged | dakṣiṇa dvārāt: from the southern gate | yatra: where | yūthapaḥ: the General | aṇgadaḥ: Angada ( is stationed). |

TRANSLATION

That whole army of demons paraded, looking as brilliant as the clouds, with lightning and sound in the rainy season. They emerged from the southern gate where the General Angada is stationed.

VERSE 13

तेषां निष्क्रममाणानामशुभं समजायत

teṣāṃ niṣkramamāṇānāmaśubhaṃ samajāyata

SYNONYMS

14| teṣām: (While) those demons | niṣkramāṇām: set forth | aśubham: inauspicious portents | ajāyata: appeared | tadā: then | vighanāt: from a cloudless | tīvrāt: yet burning | ākāśāt: sky | ulmukāni: meteors | apatan: fell | ghorāḥ: fearful | śirāḥ: jackals | vavāśire: (emitting) their howls | vamantaḥ: belched forth | pāvakajrālāḥ: flames and fire. |

TRANSLATION

While those demons set forth, inauspicious portents appeared. From a cloudless yet burning sky, meteors fell. Fearful jackals, emitting their howls, belched forth flames and fire.

VERSE 15

व्याहरन्त मृगा घोरा रक्षसां निधनं तदा
समापतन्तो योधास्तु प्रास्खलंस्तत्र दारुणम्

vyāharanta mṛgā ghorā rakṣasāṃ nidhanaṃ tadā
samāpatanto yodhāstu prāskhalaṃstatra dāruṇam

SYNONYMS

ghorāḥ: the dreadful | mṛgāḥ: animals | tadā: then | vyāharanta: foretold | midhanam: teh destruction | rakṣasām: of the demons | yodhāstu: the warriors | samāpatantaḥ: entering the combat | prāskhalam: stumbled | tatra: there daaruNam = miserably. |

TRANSLATION

The dreadful beasts then foretold destruction of demons, who while entering the combat, stumbled miserably.

VERSE 16

एतानौत्पातिकान् दृष्ट्वा वज्रदंष्ट्रो महाबलः
धैर्यमालम्ब्य तेजस्वी निर्जगाम रणोत्सुकः

etānautpātikān dṛṣṭvā vajradaṃṣṭro mahābalaḥ
dhairyamālambya tejasvī nirjagāma raṇotsukaḥ

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: (Even after) seeing | etān: these | outpātikān: portents | vajradamṣṭraḥ: Vjradamshtra | mahābalaḥ: of exceeding prowess | tejasvī: and sharpness | ālambhya: shored up | dhairyam: courage | nirjagāma: and set out (for the combat) | roṇotsukaḥ: being fond of the battle. |

TRANSLATION

Ever after seeing these portents Vajradamshtra of exceeding prowess and sharpness, shored up courage and being fond of battle, set out for the combat.

VERSE 17

तांस्तु निष्क्रमतो दृष्ट्वा वानरा जितकाशिनः
प्रणेदुः सुमहानादान् पूरयंश्च दिशो दशः

tāṃstu niṣkramato dṛṣṭvā vānarā jitakāśinaḥ
praṇeduḥ sumahānādān pūrayaṃśca diśo daśaḥ

SYNONYMS

vānarāḥ: the monkeys | jitakāśinaḥ: burning for victory | dṛṣṭvā: seeing | tān: then | niṣkramataḥ: advancing | praṇeduḥ: sounded | sumahānādān: very great noises | pūrayamśca: and filled | daśa: the ten | diśaḥ: quarters. |

TRANSLATION

The monkeys, burning for victory, seeing their enemies advancing, made tremendous shouts which echoed every quarter.

VERSE 18

ततः प्रवृत्तं तुमुलं हरीणां राक्षसैः सह
घोराणाम् भीमरूपाणामन्योन्यवधकान्क्षिणाम्

tataḥ pravṛttaṃ tumulaṃ harīṇāṃ rākṣasaiḥ saha
ghorāṇām bhīmarūpāṇāmanyonyavadhakānkṣiṇām

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | tumulam: a tumultuous battle | pravṛttam: occured | harīṇām: (between) monkeys | tathā: and | rakṣasām: demons | ghorāṇām: who were cruel | bhīma rūpāṇām: of fearful forms | anyonya vadhakāṇkṣiṇām: and desirous of killing each other. |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, a tumultuous battle ensured between the monkeys and the demons, who were cruel, of ferocious form and desirous of each other's destruction.

VERSE 19

निष्पतन्तो महोत्साहा भिन्नदेहशोरोधराः
रुधिरोक्षितसर्वाङ्गा न्यपतन्धरणीतले

niṣpatanto mahotsāhā bhinnadehaśorodharāḥ
rudhirokṣitasarvāṅgā nyapatandharaṇītale

SYNONYMS

mahotsāhāḥ: some warriors of great energy | niṣpatantaḥ: coming for war | bhinna deha śirodharāḥ: their necks and bodies severed | nyapatan: fell | dharaṇītale: to the surface of the earth | rudhirokṣi ta sarvāṇgāḥ: their entire body bathed in blood. |

TRANSLATION

Some warriors of great energy, coming for war, their necks, and bodies severed, fell to the surface of the earth, their entire bodies bathed in blood.

VERSE 20

केचिदन्योन्यमासाद्य शूराः परिघपाणयः
चिक्षिपुर्विविधान् शस्त्रान्समरेष्वनिवर्तिनः

kecidanyonyamāsādya śūrāḥ parighapāṇayaḥ
cikṣipurvividhān śastrānsamareṣvanivartinaḥ

SYNONYMS

kecit śūrāḥ: some warriors | anivartinaḥ: who did not turn back | samre: in battle | parighapāṇayaḥ: with arms resembling steel | āsādya: approached | anyonyam: each other | cikṣipuḥ: and threw | vividhān: various kinds | śastrān: of weapons. |

TRANSLATION

Some other warriors, who did not turn back in battle, with arms resembling steel, approached one another, attacking with various kinds of weapons.

VERSE 21

द्रुमाणां च शिलानां च शस्त्राणां चापि निःस्वनः
श्रूयते सुमहांस्तत्र घोरो हृदयभेदनः

drumāṇāṃ ca śilānāṃ ca śastrāṇāṃ cāpi niḥsvanaḥ
śrūyate sumahāṃstatra ghoro hṛdayabhedanaḥ

SYNONYMS

sumahān: an extremely great | ghoraḥ: and terrible sound | hṛdaya bhedanaḥ: breaking the hearts | śrūyate: was heard | tatra: there | drumāṇām: of trees | śilānām ca: rocks | śastrāṇām ca api: and even weapons. |

TRANSLATION

An extremely great and terrible noise, breaking the hearts, was heard there from trees, rocks and weapons.

VERSE 22

रथनेमि स्वनस्तत्र धनुषश्चापि घोरवत्

rathanemi svanastatra dhanuṣaścāpi ghoravat

SYNONYMS

ghoravat: a terrific | rathanemi svnaḥ: noise of the wheel-rims of chariots | dhanuścāpi: the bow | tumulaḥ: the shaN^kha bheriimR^idaN^gaanaam = of couches | babhūva: arose | tatra: there. |

TRANSLATION

A terrific noise of the wheel-rims of chariots and the bow, along with the tumultuous sounds of couches, kettle-drums and tabours arose there.

VERSE 23

केचिदस्त्राणि संत्यज्य बाहुयुद्धमकुर्वत

kecidastrāṇi saṃtyajya bāhuyuddhamakurvata

SYNONYMS

24| kecit: some demons | samtyajya: leaving | astrāṇi: weapons | akurvata: performed | bāhuyuddham: battle with their arms | rākśasāḥ: the demons | hatāḥ: were beaten | bhagnadehāḥ: and their bodies made fragmented | vānaraiḥ: by the monkeys | yuddha durmadaiḥ: of fighting arrogance | talaiśca: with their palms | caraṇaiśca: feet | muṣṭibhiśca: fists | drumairapi: even trees | jānubhiśca: knees | kecit: some | cūrṇitā: were crushed to powder | śilābhiḥ: by rocks. |

TRANSLATION

Some demons, leaving weapons, performed battle with their arms. The demons were beaten and their bodies made fragmented by the monkeys of fighting arrogance, with their palms, feet, fists, trees and knees. Some demons were crushed to powder with rocks.

VERSE 25

वज्रदंष्ट्रो भृशं बानै रणे वित्रासयन् हरीन्

vajradaṃṣṭro bhṛśaṃ bānai raṇe vitrāsayan harīn

SYNONYMS

bhṛśam: tremendously | vitrāyasan: frightening | harīn: the monkeys | raṇe: in the battle | bāṇaiḥ: by his arrows | vajradamṣṭraḥ: Vajradamshtra | cacāra: moved himself | antakaḥ iva: like Yama the God of Death | loka samhāre: at the time of destroying the words | pāśa hastaḥ: with a noose in his hand. |

TRANSLATION

Tremendously frightening the monkeys in the battle by his arrows, Vajradamshtra moved himself in the battle-field like Yama the God of Death moving at the time of dissolution of the worlds, wielding a noose in his hand.

VERSE 26

बलवन्तो।अस्त्रविदुषो नानाप्रहरणा रणे

balavanto|astraviduṣo nānāpraharaṇā raṇe

SYNONYMS

balavantaḥ: the strong | rākṣasaḥ: demons | astra vidiṣaḥ: skilled in weaponry | nānā praharaṇāḥ: and wielding various kinds of weapons | jaghnuḥ: killed | vānara sainyāni: the army of monkeys | raṇe: in the battle | krodha mūrcitāḥ: with their increased anger. |

TRANSLATION

The strong demons skilled in weaponry and wielding various kinds of weapons, killed the army of monkeys in that battle, with their increased anger.

VERSE 27

जघ्ने तान् राक्षसान् सर्वान् धृष्टो वालिसुतो रणे

jaghne tān rākṣasān sarvān dhṛṣṭo vālisuto raṇe

SYNONYMS

dhṛṣṭaḥ: the courageous | vālisutaḥ: Angada | dviguṇāviṣṭaḥ: twice possessed krodhena = by anger | jaghne: killed | sarvān: all | tān: those | rākṣasān: demons | raṇe: in the battle | samvartake analaḥ iva: like a world destroying fire. |

TRANSLATION

The courageous Angada the son of Vali, twice possessed of anger, killed all those demons in the battle, like a world-destroying fire.

VERSE 28

तान् राक्षसगणान् सर्वान्वऋक्षमुद्यम्य वीर्यवान्

tān rākṣasagaṇān sarvānvaṛkṣamudyamya vīryavān

SYNONYMS

29| vīryavān: the valiant | aṇgadaḥ: Angada | krodhatāmrākṣaḥ: with his raging red eyes | udyamya: lifted | vṛkṣam: a tree | (jaghāna: killed) | sarvān: all | tān: those | rākṣasagaṇān: troops of demons | sihaḥ iva: like a lion (killing) | kṣudramṛgān: small animals | śakratulya parākramaḥ: Angada | cakāra: made | ghoram: a terrific kadanam = destroyer of the enemies. |

TRANSLATION

The valiant Angada with his raging red eyes lifted a tree and killed all those troop of demons, like a lion killing small animals. Angada, with his prowess resembling that of Indra the Lord of celestials, brought about a terrific destroyer of the enemies.

VERSE 30

अङ्गदाभिहतास्तत्त राक्षसा भीमविक्रमाः
विभिन्नशिरसः पेतुर्निकृत्ता इव पादपाः

aṅgadābhihatāstatta rākṣasā bhīmavikramāḥ
vibhinnaśirasaḥ peturnikṛttā iva pādapāḥ

SYNONYMS

bhīma vikramāḥ: the terribly strong | rākṣasāḥ: demons | aṅgadābhihatāḥ: struck by Angada | tatra: there | vibhinna śirasaḥ: with their heads shattered | petuḥ: fell down | pādapāḥ iva: like trees | nikṛttāḥ: chopped off. |

TRANSLATION

The terribly strong demons, struck by Angada there, had their heads shattered and fell down like chopped off trees.

VERSE 31

रथैश्चित्रैर्ध्यजैरश्वैः शरीर्हैररिरक्षसाम्
रुधिरौघेण संचन्ना भूमिर्भयकरा तदा

rathaiścitrairdhyajairaśvaiḥ śarīrhairarirakṣasām
rudhiraugheṇa saṃcannā bhūmirbhayakarā tadā

SYNONYMS

bhūmiḥ: the earth | tadā: then | bhayakarā: appeared fearful | samcannā: being covered | rathaiḥ: with chariots | citraiḥ: conspicuous | dhvajaiḥ: flags | aśvaiḥ: horses | śarīraiḥ: bodes | harirakṣasām: of monkeys and demons | rudhirougheṇa: with streams of blood. |

TRANSLATION

The earth then appeared fearful, it being covered with chariots, conspicuous flags, horses, bodies of monkeys and demons with streams of blood flowing there.

VERSE 32

हारकेयूरवस्त्रैश्च चत्रैश्च समलम्कृता
भूमिर्भाति रणे तत्र शारदीव यथा निशा

hārakeyūravastraiśca catraiśca samalamkṛtā
bhūmirbhāti raṇe tatra śāradīva yathā niśā

SYNONYMS

bhūmiḥ: the earth | samalamkṛtā: decorated | raṇe: in battle | tatra: there | hāra keyūra vastraiśca: with necklaces | catraiśca: and umbrellas | bhāti: shone | śāradī niśeva yathā: like an autumnal night. |

TRANSLATION

That battle-field, decorated with necklaces, bracelets worn on upper arm, garments and umbrellas looked like an autumnal night.

VERSE 33

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्ध काण्डे त्रिपञ्चशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddha kāṇḍe tripañcaśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

vegena: by the swiftness | aṅgadasya: of Angada | tat: that | mahat: great | rākṣasabalam: army of demons | tatra: there | prākampata: trembled | tadā: then | ambudoyathā: like a cloud | pavanena: of wind. |

TRANSLATION

By the swiftness of Angada, that great army of demons there trembled then, like a cloud by the swiftness of wind.
