Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

अथ उवाच महा तेजा हरि राजो महा बलः
किम् इयम् व्यथिता सेना मूढ वाता इव नौर् जले

atha uvāca mahā tejā hari rājo mahā balaḥ
kim iyam vyathitā senā mūḍha vātā iva naur jale

SYNONYMS

atha: then | harirājaḥ: Sugreeva | mahātejaḥ: having a great splendour | mahābalaḥ: and a mighty prowess | uvāca: spoke | kim: why | iyam senā: is this army | vyathitā: agitated | nouḥ iva: like a ship | mūḍhavāteva: driven out of its course | jale: in water. |

TRANSLATION

Meanwhile, Sugreeva the king of Monkeys, possessing a great splendour and a mighty power, enquired saying, "Why is this army agitated, like a ship driven out of its course in water?"

VERSE 2

सुग्रीवस्य वचह् श्रुत्वा वालि पुत्रो अन्गदो अब्रवीत्
न त्वम् पश्यसि रामम् च लक्ष्मणम् च महा बलम्

sugrīvasya vacah śrutvā vāli putro angado abravīt
na tvam paśyasi rāmam ca lakṣmaṇam ca mahā balam

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Sugreeva, Angada the son of Vali replied, saying "Do you not see the high-souled Rama and Lakshmana of the great chariot, those two valiant sons of Dasaratha covered with darts lying all bloody in a bed of arrows?"

VERSE 4

अथ अब्रवीद् वानर इन्द्रह् सुग्रीवह् पुत्रम् अन्गदम्
न अनिमित्तम् इदम् मन्ये भवितव्यम् भयेन तु

atha abravīd vānara indrah sugrīvah putram angadam
na animittam idam manye bhavitavyam bhayena tu

SYNONYMS

atha: thereupon | sugrīvaḥ: Sugreeva | vānarendraḥ: the Lord of Monkeys | abravīt: said | putram: to his son | aṅgadam: Angaa | na manya: I do not think | idam: this | animittam: to be without any reason | bhavitavyam: there must be | bhayena: (some) danger (ahead). |

TRANSLATION

Thereupon, Sugreeva the Lord of Monkeys said to his son Angada: "To my mind, there is some othere cause why the monkeys are bewildereed. There must be some danger ahead."

VERSE 5

विषण्ण वदना ह्य् एते त्यक्त प्रहरणा दिशः
प्रपलायन्ति हरयस् त्रासाद् उत्फुल्ल लोचनाः

viṣaṇṇa vadanā hy ete tyakta praharaṇā diśaḥ
prapalāyanti harayas trāsād utphulla locanāḥ

SYNONYMS

atra: here | ete: these | harayaḥ: monkeys | palāyante: are running away | diśaḥ: in all directions | utphulla locanāḥ: with their eyes distended | trāsāt: with terror | tyakta praharaṇāḥ: throwing down their arms | viṣaṇṇavadanāḥ: and looking dejected. |

TRANSLATION

"Here, these monkeys are runnng away in all directions, with their eyes distended with terror, throwing down their arms and looking dejected."

VERSE 6

अन्योन्यस्य न लज्जन्ते न निरीक्षन्ति पृष्ठतः
विप्रकर्षन्ति च अन्योन्यम् पतितम् लन्घयन्ति च

anyonyasya na lajjante na nirīkṣanti pṛṣṭhataḥ
viprakarṣanti ca anyonyam patitam langhayanti ca

SYNONYMS

na lajjante: (They) are not ashamed | anyanyasya: of one another | na nirīkṣanti: they are not looking | pṛṣṭhataḥ: behind them | viprakarṣanti: (They) are jotling | anyonyam: each other | laṅghayanti ca: and leaping over | patitam: those who have fallen. |

TRANSLATION

"They are not ashamed of one another. They are not looking behind than even. They are jostling each other and leaping over those who have fallen."

VERSE 7

एतस्मिन्न् अन्तरे वीरो गदा पाणिर् विभीषणः
सुग्रीवम् वर्धयाम् आस राघवम् च निरैक्षत

etasminn antare vīro gadā pāṇir vibhīṣaṇaḥ
sugrīvam vardhayām āsa rāghavam ca niraikṣata

SYNONYMS

etasmin antare: In the meanwhile | vīraḥ: the valiant | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | gadāpāṇiḥ: wielding a mace in his hand | vardhayāmāsa: and cheered | sugrīva: Sugreeva | rāghavam ca: and Rama (saying) | jayāśiṣā: Victory to Rama! Victory to Rama! |

TRANSLATION

In the midst of this turmoil, the valiant Vibhishana, wielding a mace in his hand came there and cheered Sugreeva and Rama saying "Victory to Rama! Victory to Rama!."

VERSE 8

विभीषणम् तम् सुग्रीवो दृष्ट्वा वानर भीषणम्
ऋक्ष राजम् समीपस्थम् जाम्बवन्तम् उवाच ह

vibhīṣaṇam tam sugrīvo dṛṣṭvā vānara bhīṣaṇam
ṛkṣa rājam samīpastham jāmbavantam uvāca ha

TRANSLATION

Observing Vibhishana to be the cause of panic among the monkeys, Sugreeva spoke to the illustrious Jambavan the king of Bears who stood near (as follows):

VERSE 9

विभीषणो अयम् सम्प्राप्तो यम् दृष्ट्वा वानर ऋषभाः
विद्रवन्ति परित्रस्ता रावण आत्मज शन्कया

vibhīṣaṇo ayam samprāpto yam dṛṣṭvā vānara ṛṣabhāḥ
vidravanti paritrastā rāvaṇa ātmaja śankayā

SYNONYMS

ayam: this | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | samprāptaḥ: has come | dṛṣṭvā: on seeing | yam: him | vānararṣabhāḥ: the foremost of monkeys | āyata santrāsāḥ: seized with terror | dravanti: have fled | rāvaṇātmaja śaṇkayā: deeming him to be Indrajit |

TRANSLATION

"It is Vibhishana who has come here. On seeing him, the foremost of monkeys seized with terror have fled, deeming him to be Indrajit, Ravana's son."

VERSE 10

शीघ्रम् एतान् सुवित्रस्तान् बहुधा विप्रधावितान्
पर्यवस्थापय आख्याहि विभीषणम् उपस्थितम्

śīghram etān suvitrastān bahudhā vipradhāvitān
paryavasthāpaya ākhyāhi vibhīṣaṇam upasthitam

SYNONYMS

paryavasthāpaya: you reassemble | etān: those monkeys | bhīghram: immediately | susantrastān: who | vipradhāvitān: have scattered | bahudhā: in many directions | ākhyāhi: and inform (them) | vibhīṣaṇam: (that it is Vibhishana | upasthitam: who has come!. |

TRANSLATION

"You reassemble those monkeys immediately, who in fear have scattered in many directions and inform them that it is Vibhishana who has come!"

VERSE 11

सुग्रीवेण एवम् उक्तस् तु जाम्बवान् ऋक्ष पार्थिवः
वानरान् सान्त्वयाम् आस सम्निवर्त्य प्रहावतः

sugrīveṇa evam uktas tu jāmbavān ṛkṣa pārthivaḥ
vānarān sāntvayām āsa samnivartya prahāvataḥ

SYNONYMS

evam: thus | uktaḥ: spoken | sugrīveṇa: by Sugreeva | jāmbavān: Jambavan | ṛkṣa pārthivaḥ: the king of Bears | nivartya vānarān pradhāvataḥ: made monkeys | sāntvayāmāsa: and reassured (them). |

TRANSLATION

Thus spoken by Sugreeva, Jambavan the king of Bears called the fugitive monkeys back and restored them to confidence.

VERSE 12

ते निवृत्ताह् पुनह् सर्वे वानरास् त्यक्त सम्भ्रमाः
ऋक्ष राज वचह् श्रुत्वा तम् च दृष्ट्वा विभीषणम्

te nivṛttāh punah sarve vānarās tyakta sambhramāḥ
ṛkṣa rāja vacah śrutvā tam ca dṛṣṭvā vibhīṣaṇam

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | ṛṣarāja vacaḥ: the words of Jambavan the king of Bears | sarve: all | te vānarāḥ: those monkeys | dṛṣṭvā: on seeing | tam: that | vibhīṣaṇam: Vibhishana | punaḥ nivṛttāḥ: retraced their steps | tyakta sādhvasāh: shaking off their fear. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Jambavan the king of Bears, all those monkeys, on perceiving Vibhishana, retraced their steps, shaking off their fear.

VERSE 13

विभीषणस् तु रामस्य दृष्ट्वा गात्रम् शरैश् चितम्
लक्ष्मणस्य च धर्म आत्मा बभूव व्यथित इन्द्रियः

vibhīṣaṇas tu rāmasya dṛṣṭvā gātram śaraiś citam
lakṣmaṇasya ca dharma ātmā babhūva vyathita indriyaḥ

SYNONYMS

dharmātmā: the virtuous | vibhīṣaṇastu: Vibhishana | tadā: then | dṛṣṭvā: on beholding | rāmasya: Rama's | gātram: body | lakṣmaṇasya: as also of Lakshmana's chitam = covered | śaraiḥ: with arrows | babhūva: became | vyathitaḥ: distressed. |

TRANSLATION

Meanwhile, the virtuous Vibhishana, on beholding Rama's body as also of Lakshmana's covered with arrows, felt distressed.

VERSE 14

जल क्लिन्नेन हस्तेन तयोर् नेत्रे प्रमृज्य च
शोक सम्पीडित मना रुरोद विललाप च

jala klinnena hastena tayor netre pramṛjya ca
śoka sampīḍita manā ruroda vilalāpa ca

SYNONYMS

vimṛjya ca: washing | tayoḥ: their | netre: eyes | hastena: with his hands | jalaklinnena: dipped in water | ruroda: (Vibhishana) began to weap | śoka sampīḍitamanāḥ: with anguish seizing his heart | vilalāpa ca: and lamented (saying). |

TRANSLATION

Washing their eyes with his hands dipped in water, Vibhishana began to weap, with anguish seizing his heart and lamented, saying:

VERSE 15

इमौ तौ सत्त्व सम्पन्नौ विक्रान्तौ प्रिय सम्युगौ
इमाम् अवस्थाम् गमितौ राकसैह् कूट योधिभिः

imau tau sattva sampannau vikrāntau priya samyugau
imām avasthām gamitau rākasaih kūṭa yodhibhiḥ

SYNONYMS

imau: these two | tau: who are | sattvasampannau: powerful | vikrāntau: and valiant | priya samgamau: warriors | gamitau: have been brought | imām: to this | avasthām: state | rākṣasaiḥ: by the demons | kūṭayodhibhiḥ: the treacherous combatants. |

TRANSLATION

"These two powerful and valiant warrriors have been brought tot his state by the demons, the treacherous combatants."

VERSE 16

भ्रातुः पुत्रेण मे तेन दुष्पुत्रेण दुरात्मना
राक्षस्या जिह्मया बुद्ध्या चलिताव् ऋजु विक्रमौ

bhrātuḥ putreṇa me tena duṣputreṇa durātmanā
rākṣasyā jihmayā buddhyā calitāv ṛju vikramau

SYNONYMS

bhreatṛputreṇa: son of my brother | duṣputreṇa: that wicked youth | durātmanā: of perverse soul | rākṣasyā: in his demoniacal | jihmayā buddhyā: cunning mind | vaṅcitau: has deceived | ṛjuvikramau: those two honourable fighters. |

TRANSLATION

"The son of my brother, that wicked youth of perverse soul in his demoniac cunning mind, has decived those two honourable fighters."

VERSE 17

शरैर् इमाव् अलम् विद्धौ रुधिरेण समुक्षितौ
वसुधायाम् इम सुप्तौ दृश्येते शल्यकाव् इव

śarair imāv alam viddhau rudhireṇa samukṣitau
vasudhāyām ima suptau dṛśyete śalyakāv iva

SYNONYMS

imau: these two (Rama and Lakshmana) viddhau = struck | alam: badly | śaraiḥ: by arrows | samukṣitau: covered | rudhireṇa: with blood | suptau: and lying | vasudhāyām: on the earth | dṛśyete: are appearing | śalyakāviva: like two porcupines. |

TRANSLATION

"These two warriors, Rama and Lakshmana, who were struck badly by arrows and covered with blood are lying on the earth, like two porcupines."

VERSE 18

ययोर् वीर्यम् उपाश्रित्य प्रतिष्ठा कान्क्षिता मया
ताव् उभौ देह नाशाय प्रसुप्तौ पुरुष ऋषभौ

yayor vīryam upāśritya pratiṣṭhā kānkṣitā mayā
tāv ubhau deha nāśāya prasuptau puruṣa ṛṣabhau

SYNONYMS

imau: these | puraṣarṣabhau: two lions among men | yayau: on whom aashritya = depended | pratiṣṭhā: the position | kāṇkṣitā: aspired | mayā: by me | tau: they as such | prasuptau: are lying insensible | dehanāśāya: waiting for the dissolution of the body. |

TRANSLATION

"These two lions among men, on whom depended the positon aspired by me, are lying insensible, waiting for the dissolution of the body."

VERSE 19

जीवन्न् अद्य विपन्नो अस्मि नष्ट राज्य मनो रथः
प्राप्त प्रतिज्नश् च रिपुह् सकामो रावणह् कृतः

jīvann adya vipanno asmi naṣṭa rājya mano rathaḥ
prāpta pratijnaś ca ripuh sakāmo rāvaṇah kṛtaḥ

SYNONYMS

naṣṭarājyamanorathaḥ: deprived of the hope of becoming king | adya: now | asmi: I am | vipannaḥ: dead | jīvannapi: even if survinving | ripuḥ: (while) my rival | rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | prāpta pratijñaḥ: sees his vow fulfilled | kṛtaḥ: and gets | sakāmāśca: his desires realised. |

TRANSLATION

"Deprived of the hope now of becoming a king, I am as one dead, eventhough surviving; while my rival Ravana sees his vow fulfilled and gets his desires realised."

VERSE 20

एवम् विलपमानम् तम् परिष्वज्य विभीषणम्
सुग्रीवः सत्त्व सम्पन्नो हरि राजो अब्रवीद् इदम्

evam vilapamānam tam pariṣvajya vibhīṣaṇam
sugrīvaḥ sattva sampanno hari rājo abravīd idam

SYNONYMS

sugrīvaḥ: Sugreeva | sattva sampannaḥ: the magnanimous | harirājaḥ: king of the Monkeys | pariṣvajya: having embraced | tam vibhīṣaṇam: that Vibhishana | evam: thus | vilapamānam: lamenting | abravīt: spoke | idam: these words. |

TRANSLATION

Then, Sugreeva the magnanimous King of Monkeys embraced that Vibhishana thus lamenting and spoke the following words:

VERSE 21

राज्यम् प्राप्स्यसि धर्मज्न लन्कायाम् न अत्र संशयः
रावणः सह पुत्रेण स राज्यम् न इह लप्स्यते

rājyam prāpsyasi dharmajna lankāyām na atra saṃśayaḥ
rāvaṇaḥ saha putreṇa sa rājyam na iha lapsyate

SYNONYMS

dharmajña: O | prāpsyasi: you shall obtain | rājyam: the kingdom | laṅkāyām: in Lanka | na: there is no | samśayaḥ: double | atra: in this matter | rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | na lapsyate: will not fulfil | svakāmam: their desire | iha: now. |

TRANSLATION

"O, knower of what is right! You shall certainly reign over Lanka. Ravana and his son will not acheive their purpose."

VERSE 22

न रुजापीडिताव् एताव् उभौ राघव लक्ष्मणौ
त्यक्त्वा मोहम् वधिष्येते सगणम् रावणम् रणे

na rujāpīḍitāv etāv ubhau rāghava lakṣmaṇau
tyaktvā moham vadhiṣyete sagaṇam rāvaṇam raṇe

SYNONYMS

etau: these | ubhau: two | rāghavalakṣmanau: Rama and Lakshmana | na pīḍitau: are not badly off | rujā: with injury | tyaktvā: giving up | moham: their swoon | vadhiṣyete: they will destroy | rāvaṇam: Ravana | sagaṇam: with his hordes | raṇe: in battle. |

TRANSLATION

"The injury done to Rama and Lakshmana is not grave. Emerging from their swoon, they will destroy Ravana with his hordes in battles."

VERSE 23

तम् एवम् सान्त्वयित्वा तु समाश्वास्य च राक्षसम्
सुषेणम् श्वशुरम् पार्श्वे सुग्रीवस् तम् उवाच ह

tam evam sāntvayitvā tu samāśvāsya ca rākṣasam
suṣeṇam śvaśuram pārśve sugrīvas tam uvāca ha

SYNONYMS

sāntvayitvā: consoling | samāśvāsya: and convincing | tam rākṣasam: that Vibhishana | evam: in this way | sugrīvaḥ: Sugreeva | uvāca: spoke | tam suṣeṇam: to that Sushena | śvaśuram: his father-in-law | pārśve: who was on his side. |

TRANSLATION

Consoling and convincing Vibhishana thus, Sugreeva spoke to Sushena, his father-in-law, who was on his side (as follows):

VERSE 24

सह शूरैर् हरि गणैर् लब्ध सम्ज्नाव् अरिम् दमौ
गच्च त्वम् भ्रातरौ गृह्य किष्किन्धाम् राम लक्ष्मणौ

saha śūrair hari gaṇair labdha samjnāv arim damau
gacca tvam bhrātarau gṛhya kiṣkindhām rāma lakṣmaṇau

SYNONYMS

gṛhya: taking | bhrātarau: these two brothers | rāmalakṣmaṇau: Rama and Lakshmana | harigaṇaiḥ: with the troops of monkeys | śūraiḥ: who ar strong | tvam: you | gacha: go | kiṣkindhām: to Kinshkinda | arindamau: till these two scourgers of their foes | labdha sanjñau: have recovered their consciouness. |

TRANSLATION

"Taking these two brothers, Rama and Lakshmana with the troops of monkeys who are strong, you go to Kishkindha, till these two scourgers of their foes have recovered their consciousness."

VERSE 25

अहम् तु रावणम् हत्वा सपुत्रम् सह बान्धवम्
मैथिलीम् आनयिष्यामि शक्रो नष्टाम् इव श्रियम्

aham tu rāvaṇam hatvā saputram saha bāndhavam
maithilīm ānayiṣyāmi śakro naṣṭām iva śriyam

SYNONYMS

aham tu: as for me | hatvā: slaying | rāvaṇam: Ravana | saputram: with his son | saha bāndhavam: and his relatives | ānayiṣyāmi: I shall bring back | maithilīm: Seetha | śakraḥ iva: as did Indra the Lord of celestials | śriyam: the prosperity | naṣṭām: he had lost. |

TRANSLATION

"As for me, I shall slay Ravana with his son and his relatives and bring back Seetha as did Indra the Lord of celestials, the prosperity he had lost."

VERSE 26

श्रुत्वा एतद् वानर इन्द्रस्य सुषेणो वाक्यम् अब्रवीत्
देव असुरम् महा युद्धम् अनुभूतम् सुदारुणम्

śrutvā etad vānara indrasya suṣeṇo vākyam abravīt
deva asuram mahā yuddham anubhūtam sudāruṇam

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | etatvākyam: these words | vānarendrasya: of Sugreeva | suṣeṇaḥ: Sushena | abravīt: spoke (as follows) | sudāruṇam: a highly terrific | mahat: and great | yuddham: was | daivāsuram: between celestials and demons | anubhūtam: was perceived by me. |

TRANSLATION

"Hearing the words of Sugreeva, Sushena replied as followers: " A highly terrific and great was between celestials and demons was perceived by me."

VERSE 27

तदा स्म दानवा देवान् शर संस्पर्श कोविदाः
निजघ्नुः शस्त्र विदुषश् चादयन्तो मुहुर् मुहुः

tadā sma dānavā devān śara saṃsparśa kovidāḥ
nijaghnuḥ śastra viduṣaś cādayanto muhur muhuḥ

SYNONYMS

chādayantaḥ: by making themselves invisible | muhurmuhuḥ: again and again | tadā: at that time | dānavāḥ: the demons | śarasamsparśa koridāḥ: skilled in the use of arrows | nijaghūḥ: overcame | devān: the gods | śastraviduṣaḥ: (despite) their skill in bearing arms. |

TRANSLATION

"By making themselves invisible again and again, the demons skilled in the use of arrows overcame the celestials despite their skill in bearing arms."

VERSE 28

तान् आर्तान् नष्ट सम्ज्नांश् च पर असूंश् च बृहस्पतिः
विध्याभिर् मन्त्र युक्ताभिर् ओषधीभिश् चिकित्सति

tān ārtān naṣṭa samjnāṃś ca para asūṃś ca bṛhaspatiḥ
vidhyābhir mantra yuktābhir oṣadhībhiś cikitsati

SYNONYMS

tān: to those celstials | ārtān: who were injured | naṣṭasamjñān: who have lost consciousness | gatāsūmśca: and who (almost) lost their lives | bṛhaspatiḥ: Brihaspati | cikitsati: treated (them) | vidyābhiḥ: with his spells | mantrayuktābhiḥ: comprising of sacred formulas | oṣadhībhiḥ: and herbs. |

TRANSLATION

"To those celestials who were wounded, unconscious and almost deprived of life, Brihaspati treated them by the aid of herbs accompanied by his spells of sacred formulas."

VERSE 29

तान्य् औषधान्य् आनयितुम् क्षीर उदम् यान्तु सागरम्
जवेन वानराह् शीघ्रम् सम्पाति पनस आदयः

tāny auṣadhāny ānayitum kṣīra udam yāntu sāgaram
javena vānarāh śīghram sampāti panasa ādayaḥ

SYNONYMS

vānarāḥ: (Let) the monkeys | sampāti panasādayaḥ: Sampati | yāntu: go | śīghram: quickly | javena: with speed | sāgaram: to the ocean | kṣirodam: of milk | ānayitum: to bring | tāni: those | ouṣadhāni: herbs. |

TRANSLATION

"Let the monkeys Sampati, Panasa and others go quickly in speed, to the ocean of milk, to bring those herbs."

VERSE 30

हरयस् तु विजानन्ति पार्वती ते महा ओषधी
सम्जीव करणीम् दिव्याम् विशल्याम् देव निर्मिताम्

harayas tu vijānanti pārvatī te mahā oṣadhī
samjīva karaṇīm divyām viśalyām deva nirmitām

SYNONYMS

harayaḥ: these monkeys | vijānanti: are conversant with | tāḥ: those | pārvātīḥ: mountainous | mahouṣadhīḥ: efficacious herbs | divyām: the celestial | samjīvakaraṇīm: Samjivakarani | viśalyām: and Vishalya | devanirmitām: which were created by a God. |

TRANSLATION

"These monkeys are conversant with those efficacious mountianous herbs - the celestial Sanjivakarani and Vishalya, which were created by a God."

VERSE 31

चन्द्रस्ः च नाम द्रोणश् च पर्वतौ सागर उत्तमे
अमृतम् यत्र मथितम् तत्र ते परम ओषधी

candrasḥ ca nāma droṇaś ca parvatau sāgara uttame
amṛtam yatra mathitam tatra te parama oṣadhī

SYNONYMS

kṣirode: from the bosom of the milky ocean | sāgarottame: the best of oceans | nāma: called | cnadraśca: Chandra | droṇaśca: and Drona | yatra: where | amṛtam: the ambrosia | mathitam: was churned | te: those aparamauSadhii = excellent herbs | tatra: are here. |

TRANSLATION

"In the bosom of the milky ocean the best of oceans, rise the mountains called Chandra and Drona, where the ambrosia was formerly churned. These two excellent herbs exist there."

VERSE 32

तौ तत्र निहिते देवैः पर्वते परम ओषधी
अयम् वायु सुतो राजन् हनूमांस् तत्र गच्चतु

tau tatra nihite devaiḥ parvate parama oṣadhī
ayam vāyu suto rājan hanūmāṃs tatra gaccatu

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

"The celestials place dthose two mountain in the vast sea. O, King! Let Hanuman the son of Wind-God go there."

VERSE 33

एतस्मिन्न् अन्तरे वायुर् मेघांश् च अपि सविद्युतः
पर्यस्यन् सागरे तोयम् कम्पयन्न् इव पर्वतान्

etasminn antare vāyur meghāṃś ca api savidyutaḥ
paryasyan sāgare toyam kampayann iva parvatān

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

In the meantime, a great wind arose, accompanied by massed clouds and lightning, whipping up the salty waves in the ocean, causing the mountains to tremble as from an earthquake.

VERSE 34

महता पक्ष वातेन सर्वे द्वीप महा द्रुमाः
निपेतुर् भग्न विटपाः समूला लवण अम्भसि

mahatā pakṣa vātena sarve dvīpa mahā drumāḥ
nipetur bhagna viṭapāḥ samūlā lavaṇa ambhasi

SYNONYMS

sarvadvīpa mahādrumāḥ: large trees situated in all the sand-banks | bhagnaviṭapāḥ: had their branches broken | mahatā pakṣavātena: by the mighty stroke of vata's wing | nipetuḥ: and fell | lavaṇa salile: in the briny water | ambhasi: of the ocena. |

TRANSLATION

"Large trees on the sand-banks had their branches broken by the mighty stroke of Vata's wings and fell headlong into the briny waters of the ocean."

VERSE 35

अभवन् पन्नगास् त्रस्ता भोगिनस् तत्र वासिनः
शीघ्रम् सर्वाणि यादांसि जग्मुश् च लवण अर्णवम्

abhavan pannagās trastā bhoginas tatra vāsinaḥ
śīghram sarvāṇi yādāṃsi jagmuś ca lavaṇa arṇavam

"The snakes became frightened. The snakes inhabiting there and all the marine animals plunged quickly into the briny ocean."

VERSE 36

ततो मुहूर्तद् गरुडम् वैनतेयम् महा बलम्
वानरा ददृशुः सर्वे ज्वलन्तम् इव पावकम्

tato muhūrtad garuḍam vainateyam mahā balam
vānarā dadṛśuḥ sarve jvalantam iva pāvakam

Thereupon, all the monkeys saw within a moment, a mighty eagle, Garuda, the son of Vinata, like unto a blazing torch.

VERSE 37

तम् आगतम् अभिप्रेक्ष्य नागास् ते विप्रदुद्रुवुः
यैस् तौ सत् पुरुषौ बद्धौ शर भूतैर् महा बलौ

tam āgatam abhiprekṣya nāgās te vipradudruvuḥ
yais tau sat puruṣau baddhau śara bhūtair mahā balau

TRANSLATION

On beholding Garuda the eagle which came there, the serpants who bound those two warriors Rama and Lakshmana in the form of mighty arrows, fled away.

VERSE 38

ततः सुपर्णह् काकुत्स्थौ दृष्ट्वा प्रत्यभिनन्द्य च
विममर्श च पाणिभ्याम् मुखे चन्द्र सम प्रभे

tataḥ suparṇah kākutsthau dṛṣṭvā pratyabhinandya ca
vimamarśa ca pāṇibhyām mukhe candra sama prabhe

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

Thereupon, Garuda the eagle, coming into contact iwth Rama and Lakshmana d offering them his good wishes, with his hands caressly touched their faces that were radiant like the moon.

VERSE 39

वैनतेयेन संस्पृष्टास् तयोह् सम्रुरुहुर् व्रणाः
सुवर्णे च तनू स्निग्धे तयोर् आशु बभूवतुः

vainateyena saṃspṛṣṭās tayoh samruruhur vraṇāḥ
suvarṇe ca tanū snigdhe tayor āśu babhūvatuḥ

Their wounds, touched by Garuda the eagle, were healed. Their bodies soon became smooth and well-rounded.

VERSE 40

तेजो वीर्यम् बलम् च ओज;उत्साहश् च महा गुणाः
प्रदर्शनम् च बुद्धिश् च स्मृतिश् च द्विगुणम् तयोः

tejo vīryam balam ca oja;utsāhaś ca mahā guṇāḥ
pradarśanam ca buddhiś ca smṛtiś ca dviguṇam tayoḥ

Their lustre, valour, strength, endurance and resolution, those great qualities, also their perspicacity, intelligence and memory were re-doubled.

VERSE 41

ताव् उत्थाप्य महा वीर्यौ गरुडो वासव उपमौ
उभौ तौ सस्वजे हृष्टौ रामश् च एनम् उवाच ह

tāv utthāpya mahā vīryau garuḍo vāsava upamau
ubhau tau sasvaje hṛṣṭau rāmaś ca enam uvāca ha

Lifting them up both who were like Indra, the highly majestic Garuda the eagle embraced them. Rama also, being pleased, spoke to him (as follows):

VERSE 42

भवत् प्रसादाद् व्यसनम् रावणि प्रभवम् महत्
आवाम् इह व्यतिक्रान्तौ शीघ्रम् च बलिनौ कृतौ

bhavat prasādād vyasanam rāvaṇi prabhavam mahat
āvām iha vyatikrāntau śīghram ca balinau kṛtau

"Now, by your grace, we both have overcome a great disaster created by Indrajit the son of Ravana. We have been made strong as before."

VERSE 43

यथा तातम् दशरथम् यथा अजम् च पितामहम्
तथा भवन्तम् आसाद्य हृषयम् मे प्रसीदति

yathā tātam daśaratham yathā ajam ca pitāmaham
tathā bhavantam āsādya hṛṣayam me prasīdati

"By meeting you thus, my heart is gladdened in the same manner as I am meeting Dasaratha, my fatehr and Aja, my paternal grandfather."

VERSE 44

को भवान् रूप सम्पन्नो दिव्य स्रग् अनुलेपनः
वसानो विरजे वस्त्रे दिव्य आभरण भूषितः

ko bhavān rūpa sampanno divya srag anulepanaḥ
vasāno viraje vastre divya ābharaṇa bhūṣitaḥ

तम् उवाच महा तेजा वैनतेयो महा बलः
पतत्रि राजह् प्रीत आत्मा हर्ष पर्याकुल ईक्षणः

tam uvāca mahā tejā vainateyo mahā balaḥ
patatri rājah prīta ātmā harṣa paryākula īkṣaṇaḥ

The highly majestic and the mighty Garuda the eagle, the King of Birds, with his eys widened in gladness and with a pleased heart, spoke to Rama as follows:

VERSE 46

अहम् सखा ते काकुत्स्थ प्रियह् प्राणो बहिश् चरः
गरुत्मान् इह सम्प्राप्तो युवयोह् साह्य कारणात्

aham sakhā te kākutstha priyah prāṇo bahiś caraḥ
garutmān iha samprāpto yuvayoh sāhya kāraṇāt

SYNONYMS

kākutstha: O | te: to you | aham: I (am) priyaH = a beloved | sakhā: friend | garutmān: Garuda | bahiscaraḥ prāṇaḥ: dear as your own | samprāptaḥ: I came | iha: here | sāhya kāraṇāt: for helping | yuvayoḥ: both of you. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Rama! I am your dearest friend Garuda dear as your own breath moving outside I came here for the purpose of helping you, both."

VERSE 47

असुरा वा महा वीर्या दानवा वा महा बलाः
सुरास्ः च अपि सगन्धर्वाह् पुरस् कृत्य शत क्रतुम्

asurā vā mahā vīryā dānavā vā mahā balāḥ
surāsḥ ca api sagandharvāh puras kṛtya śata kratum

SYNONYMS

TRANSLATION

"Either the most valiant demons or the exceedingly strong monkeys or the celestials together with the celestial musicians having Devendra the Lord of celestials in their forefront are unable to untie this awfully terrific entanglement of arrows created through his power of sorcery by Indrajit of terrific deeds."

VERSE 49

एते नागाह् काद्रवेयास् तीक्ष्ण दम्ष्ट्रा विष उल्बणाः
रक्षो माया प्रभावेन शरा भूत्वा त्वद् आश्रिताः

ete nāgāh kādraveyās tīkṣṇa damṣṭrā viṣa ulbaṇāḥ
rakṣo māyā prabhāvena śarā bhūtvā tvad āśritāḥ

SYNONYMS

ete: these serpents | kādraveyāḥ: the sons of Kadru | tīkṣṇadamṣṭrau: with their sharp fangs | viṣolbaṇāḥ: abundantly furnished iwth poison | bhūtvā: became | śarāḥ: arrows | rakṣomāyā prabhāveṇa: by the dint of sorcery by Indrajit the demon | tvadāśritā: and took their base at you." |

TRANSLATION

"These serpents, which took their base at, were none other than the sons of Kadru with their sharp fangs, abundantly filled with poison, transformed into arrows, by the dint of sorcery by Indrajit the demon."

VERSE 50

सभाग्यस्ः च असि धर्मज्न राम सत्य पराक्रम
लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा समरे रिपु घातिना

sabhāgyasḥ ca asi dharmajna rāma satya parākrama
lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā samare ripu ghātinā

SYNONYMS

dharmajña: the knower of righteousness | satyaparākrama: andtrue to your promise! | lakṣmaṇena saha: along with Lakshmana | bhrātrā: your brother | śatrughātinā: the annihilator of enemies | asi: you have become | sabhāyyaḥ: fortunate | samare: in battle. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Rama the knower of righeousness and true to your promise! You, along with your brother Lakshmana the annihilator of enemies, indeed are lucky."

VERSE 51

इमम् श्रुत्वा तु वृत्त अन्तम् त्वरमाणो अहम् आगतः
सहसा युवयोह् स्नेहात् सखित्वम् अनुपालयन्

imam śrutvā tu vṛtta antam tvaramāṇo aham āgataḥ
sahasā yuvayoh snehāt sakhitvam anupālayan

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | imam: this | vṛttāntam: incident | aham: I | āgataḥ: came | sahasaiva: soo | tvaramāṇaḥ: hastily | anupālayan: duly cherishing | āvayoḥ: our | sncāt: love | sakhitvam: and frindship. |

TRANSLATION

"Hearing about this incident, I have hastened all at once, duly cherishing the love and friendship (for you)."

VERSE 52

मोक्षितौ च महा घोराद् अस्मात् सायक बन्धनात्
अप्रमादस्ः च कर्तव्यो युवाभ्याम् नित्यम् एव हि

mokṣitau ca mahā ghorād asmāt sāyaka bandhanāt
apramādasḥ ca kartavyo yuvābhyām nityam eva hi

SYNONYMS

mokṣitau ca: you have been released | asmāt sāyaka bandhanāt: from this shackle of arrows | mahāghorāt: which was quite terrific | nityamevaca: a forever | apramādaḥ: vigilance | kartavyaḥ: is to be maintained | yuvābhyām: by both of you. |

TRANSLATION

"You have been released from this quite terrific shackle of arrows. Both of you should maintain vigilance, all the time."

VERSE 53

प्रकृत्या राक्षसाह् सर्वे सम्ग्रामे कूट योधिनः
शूराणाम् शुद्ध भावानाम् भवताम् आर्जवम् बलम्

prakṛtyā rākṣasāh sarve samgrāme kūṭa yodhinaḥ
śūrāṇām śuddha bhāvānām bhavatām ārjavam balam

SYNONYMS

prakṛtya: by name | sarve: all | rākṣasāḥ: the demons | kūṭayodhinaḥ: are treacherous fighters | saṅgrāme: the warriors | śuddhabhāvanām: the pure-minded-ness | ārjavam: and the straight forwardness | balam: are the strength. |

TRANSLATION

"All the demons by their very nature are treacherous fighters in battle. For you, the warriors, your pue-mindedness and straight forwardeness are the strengths."

VERSE 54

तन् न विश्वसितव्यम् वो राक्षसानाम् रण अजिरे
एतेन एव उपमानेन नित्य जिह्मा हि राक्षसाः

tan na viśvasitavyam vo rākṣasānām raṇa ajire
etena eva upamānena nitya jihmā hi rākṣasāḥ

SYNONYMS

etena upamānenaiva: by this example itself (of Indrajit) | rākṣasāḥ: the demons | nityam: are alwasy | jihmāḥ hi: indeed crooked-minded | tat: for that reason | na viśvasanīyam: it is not be trusted' raakSasaanaam = in the case of demons | nah: by you | raṇājire: in the battle-field. |

TRANSLATION

"What Indrajit has done, exemplifies how the demons are always crooked-minded. For this reason, you should not trust the demons in battle."

VERSE 55

एवम् उक्त्वा ततो रामम् सुपर्णह् सुमहा बलः
परिष्वज्य सुहृत् स्निग्धम् आप्रष्टुम् उपचक्रमे

evam uktvā tato rāmam suparṇah sumahā balaḥ
pariṣvajya suhṛt snigdham āpraṣṭum upacakrame

SYNONYMS

saḥ suparṇaḥ: that Garuda | mahābalaḥ: the mighty | uktvā: having spoken | rāmam: to Rama | evam: thus | tadā: then | pariṣvajya ca: and having embraced | susnigdham: affectionately | upacakrame: and began | āpraṣṭam: to take leave. |

TRANSLATION

That mighty Garuda, having spoken thus to Rama then and having affectionately embraced him, began to take leave of him.

VERSE 56

सखे राघव धर्मज्न रिपूणाम् अपि वत्सल
अभ्यनुज्नातुम् इच्चामि गमिष्यामि यथा आगतम्

sakhe rāghava dharmajna ripūṇām api vatsala
abhyanujnātum iccāmi gamiṣyāmi yathā āgatam

SYNONYMS

rāma: O | dharmajña: the knower of righteousness | vatsala: affectionate | ripuṇāmapi: even towards the enemies | sakhe: and my friend! | ichāmi: I wish | abhyamjñātum: to take leave of you | gamiṣyāmi: I shall proceed | yathāsukham: happily. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Rama the knower of piety, affectionate even towards your enemies and my dear fried! I wish to take leave of you." I shall proceed happily."

VERSE 57

न च कौतूहलम् कार्यम् सखित्वम् प्रति काङ्क्षिणा
कृतकर्मा रणे वीर क्\सखित्वम् प्रतिवेत्स्यसि

na ca kautūhalam kāryam sakhitvam prati kāṅkṣiṇā
kṛtakarmā raṇe vīra k\sakhitvam prativetsyasi

SYNONYMS

vīra: O | na kāryam: there is no need | kautūhalam: for curiosity | kāṇk͟hṣiṇā: to wish to know | sakhitvam prati: about my friendship | kṛtakarmā: after the act is accomplished | prativetsyasi: you will know | sakhitvam: about my friendship. |

TRANSLATION

"O, hero! You need not be so curious to know the casue of my friendship. You will know of it, once you have accomplished success in battle."

VERSE 58

बाल वृद्ध अवशेषाम् तु लन्काम् कृत्वा शर ऊर्मिभिः
रावणम् च रिपुम् हत्वा सीताम् समुपलप्स्यसे

bāla vṛddha avaśeṣām tu lankām kṛtvā śara ūrmibhiḥ
rāvaṇam ca ripum hatvā sītām samupalapsyase

SYNONYMS

kṛtvā: by making | laṅkām: Lanka | bāla vṛddhāvaśeṣam: a remnant land of children and the aged | śarornibhiḥ: under the flutter of your arrows | hatvā: and by slaying | rāvaṇam: Ravana | ripum: the enemy | tvam: you | pratipatsyase: will bring back | sītām: Seetha. |

TRANSLATION

"When, under the flutter of your arrows, Lanka has been destroyed save for the aged and the children and you have slain Ravana,. your enemy, you will bring back Seetha."

VERSE 59

इत्य् एवम् उक्त्वा वचनम् सुपर्णह् शीघ्र विक्रमः
रामम् च विरुजम् कृत्वा मध्ये तेषाम् वन ओकसाम्

ity evam uktvā vacanam suparṇah śīghra vikramaḥ
rāmam ca virujam kṛtvā madhye teṣām vana okasām

TRANSLATION

Having spoken thus, Garuda of swift flight, having beautiful wings, who had just healed Rama's wounds in the presence of monkeys, having paid obeisance presence of monkeys, having paid obeisance to him (by circumambulation) and taken him into his arms, entered the sky with the speed of the wind.

VERSE 61

निरुजौ राघवौ दृष्ट्वा ततो वानर यूथपाः
सिम्ह नादांस् तदा नेदुर् लान्गूलम् दुधुवुश् च ते

nirujau rāghavau dṛṣṭvā tato vānara yūthapāḥ
simha nādāṃs tadā nedur lāngūlam dudhuvuś ca te

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | dṛṣṭvā: seeing | rāghavau: Rama and Lakshmana | nīrujau: rid of pain | vānara yūdhapāḥ: the chiefs of monkeys | tadā: then | neduḥ: howled | simha nādān: like roars of lions | te: they | dudhuvuśca: lashed | lāngūlam: their tail. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing Rama and Lakshmana healed of their wounds, the cheifs of monkeys haowled like roars of lions and lashed their tails.

VERSE 62

ततो भेरीः समाजघ्नुर् मृदन्गांश् च व्यनादयन्
दध्मुः शन्खान् सम्प्रहृष्टाह् क्ष्वेलन्त्य् अपि यथा पुरम्

tato bherīḥ samājaghnur mṛdangāṃś ca vyanādayan
dadhmuḥ śankhān samprahṛṣṭāh kṣvelanty api yathā puram

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereupon | samājaghnuḥ: beat | bherīḥ: the gongs | avādayan: resounded | mṛdaṅgāmścāpi: the drums | dadhmuḥ: blew | śaṅkhān: the couches | kṣvelantyapi: and jumped in joy | yathāpuram: as before. |

TRANSLATION

Thereupon, gongs were beaten, drums resounded, and couches were blown amid jumping in joy of the monkeys as before.

VERSE 63

आपरे आस्फोट्य विक्रान्ता वानरा नग योधिनः
द्रुमान् उत्पाट्य विविधांस् तस्थुह् शत सहस्रशः

āpare āsphoṭya vikrāntā vānarā naga yodhinaḥ
drumān utpāṭya vividhāṃs tasthuh śata sahasraśaḥ

Some other strong monkeys who use trees as maces in battle, waving their arms and uprooting hundreds and thousands of various trees, stood there, ready for the battle.

VERSE 64

विसृजन्तो महा नादांस् त्रासयन्तो निशा चरान्
लन्का द्वाराण्य् उपाजग्मुर् योद्धु कामाह् प्लवम् गमाः

visṛjanto mahā nādāṃs trāsayanto niśā carān
lankā dvārāṇy upājagmur yoddhu kāmāh plavam gamāḥ

TRANSLATION

Uttering great noises, frightning the demons and desirous to fight, the monkeys reached the gates of Lanka.

VERSE 65

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे पञ्चशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe vālmīkīye ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe pañcaśaḥ sargaḥ

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, a highly terrible and tumuluous sound arose among the leaders of the monkeys, as, at the end of summer the roaring of thunder clouds in the mid-night.
