Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

तस्मिन् प्रतिप्रविष्टे लन्काम् तु कृत अर्थे रावण आत्मजे
राघवम् परिवार्य आर्ता ररक्षुर् वानर ऋषभाः

tasmin pratipraviṣṭe lankām tu kṛta arthe rāvaṇa ātmaje
rāghavam parivārya ārtā rarakṣur vānara ṛṣabhāḥ

SYNONYMS

tasmin: (while) that | rāvaṇātmaja: Indrajit | kṛtārthe: accomplished his purpose | praviṣṭe: and entered | laṅkāyām: Lanka | vānaraṣabhāḥ: the leading mokeys | atha: then | parivārya: having surrounded | rāghavam: Rama | rarakṣuḥ: and protected him. |

TRANSLATION

Indrajit, the son of Ravana having returned to Lanka, his purpose accomplished, the leading monkeys surrounded Rama in order to watch over him.

VERSE 2

हनूमान् अन्गदो नीलह् सुषेणह् कुमुदो नलः
गजो गव अक्षो गवयह् शरभो गन्ध मादनः

hanūmān angado nīlah suṣeṇah kumudo nalaḥ
gajo gava akṣo gavayah śarabho gandha mādanaḥ

TRANSLATION

Hanuman, Angada, Nila, Sushena, Kumuda, Nala, Gaja, Gavaksha, Panasa, Sanuprastha and the mighty Jambavan with Sunda, Rambha, Shatabali and Prithu all these monkeys, armed with trees, reorganized their ranks, stood alert, surveyed the quarters of the sky up and down and on every side and, even if a grass stirred, they exclaimed, "It is a demon!"

VERSE 5

रावणश् च अपि सम्हृष्टो विसृज्य इन्द्रजितम् सुतम्
आजुहाव ततह् सीता रक्षणी राक्षसीस् तदा

rāvaṇaś ca api samhṛṣṭo visṛjya indrajitam sutam
ājuhāva tatah sītā rakṣaṇī rākṣasīs tadā

SYNONYMS

rāvaṇaścāpi: Ravana too | samhṛṣṭaḥ: full of joy | visṛjya: dismissed | sutam: his son | indrajitam: Indrajit | tataḥ: and thereafter | ājuhāva: summoned | rākṣasīḥ: the female-demons | sītā rākṣaṇīḥ: who guarded Seetha | tadā: then. |

TRANSLATION

Ravana, meanwhile, full of joy, dismissed his son Indrajit and thereafter summoned the female demons who guarded Seetha.

VERSE 6

राक्षस्यस् त्रिजटा च अपि शासनात् तम् उपस्थिताः
ता उवाच ततो हृष्टो राक्षसी राक्षस ईश्वरः

rākṣasyas trijaṭā ca api śāsanāt tam upasthitāḥ
tā uvāca tato hṛṣṭo rākṣasī rākṣasa īśvaraḥ

TRANSLATION

Following his orders, the female-demons along with Trijata appeared before him. Then, the rejoiced Ravana said to them as follows:

VERSE 7

हताव् इन्द्रजिता आख्यात वैदेह्या राम लक्ष्मणौ
पुष्पकम् च समारोप्य दर्शयध्वम् हतौ रणे

hatāv indrajitā ākhyāta vaidehyā rāma lakṣmaṇau
puṣpakam ca samāropya darśayadhvam hatau raṇe

SYNONYMS

ākhyāta: tell | vaidehyāḥ: Seetha | rāma lakṣmaṇau: that Rama and Lakshmana | hatau: Rama and Lakshmana | indrajitā: by Indrajit | samāropya: having made to ascend | tat: that | puṣpakam: aeroplane | darśayadhvam: show | raṇe: in battle. |

TRANSLATION

"Tell Seetha that Rama and Lakshmana have been killed by Indrajit. Take her in Pushpaka the aeroplane and show her Rama and Lakshman who were killed in battle."

VERSE 8

यद् आश्रयाद् अवष्टब्धो न इयम् माम् उपतिष्ठति
सो अस्या भर्ता सह भ्रात्रा निरस्तो रण मूर्धनि

yad āśrayād avaṣṭabdho na iyam mām upatiṣṭhati
so asyā bhartā saha bhrātrā nirasto raṇa mūrdhani

SYNONYMS

yadāśrayāt: on whose shelter | iyam: she | avaṣṭabdhā: feels proud | na upatiṣṭhate: and does not come near | mām: me | saḥ: that | asyāḥ bhartāḥ: her husband | nihataḥ: was killed | bhrātrā saha: along with his brother | raṇamūrdhani: in the battle-front. |

TRANSLATION

"Her husband, the one depending on whom rendered her so proud that she refused to be united with me, lies there killed with his brother in the battle-front."

VERSE 9

निर्विशन्का निरुद्विग्ना निरपेक्षा च मैथिली
माम् उपस्थास्यते सीता सर्व आभरण भूषिता

nirviśankā nirudvignā nirapekṣā ca maithilī
mām upasthāsyate sītā sarva ābharaṇa bhūṣitā

SYNONYMS

sītā: Seetha | maithilī: the princess of Mithila | sarvābharaṇa bhūṣitā: adorned herself with all kinds of ornaments | upasthāsyate: willl submit before | mām: me | nirviśankā: without any apprehension | nirudvignā: without grief | nirapekṣā: and without any hope of reunion. |

TRANSLATION

"From now on, free from anxiety, grief and expectation of reunion, Seetha the princess of Mithila kingdom, adorned in all her jewels, will submit herself to me."

VERSE 10

अद्य काल वशम् प्राप्तम् रणे रामम् सलक्ष्मणम्
अवेक्ष्य विनिवृत्त आशा न अन्याम् गतिम् अपश्यती

adya kāla vaśam prāptam raṇe rāmam salakṣmaṇam
avekṣya vinivṛtta āśā na anyām gatim apaśyatī

SYNONYMS

avekṣya: beholding | rāmam: Rama | salakṣmaṇam: with Lakshmana | gatam: having obtained | kālavaśam: the dominion of death | adya: today | : she | viśālākṣī: the large-eyed woman | vinivṛttā: will return | upasthāsyate: and submit before | mām: me | svayam: herself | apaśyatī: without finding | anyām: any other | gatim: haven | anapekṣā: and hoping for nothing else . |

TRANSLATION

"Beholding Rama and Lakshmana fallen under the sway of death on the battle-field today, finding no other haven and hoping for nothing else, the large-eyed Seetha will voluntarily seek refuge with me!"

VERSE 11

तस्य तद् वचनम् श्रुत्वा रावणस्य दुरात्मनः

tasya tad vacanam śrutvā rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | tat vacanam: that command | tasya rāvaṇasya: of that Ravana | durātmanaḥ: the curel demon | tāḥ rākṣasya: those female-demons | uktvā: having replied | tathā iti: "so it be" | jagmuḥ vai: and went | yatra: there | puṣpakam: Pushpaka-plane was there. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing these words of the cruel Ravana, they all replied, "Be it so" and went to where the Pushpaka chariot was.

VERSE 12

ततः पुष्पकम् आदय राक्षस्यो रावण आज्नया

tataḥ puṣpakam ādaya rākṣasyo rāvaṇa ājnayā

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | rākṣasyaḥ: the female-demons | ādāya: brought | puṣpakam: the aerial car | rāmaṇājñayā: as per the instructions of Ravana | samupānayan: and carried it near | tām: tat | maithilīm: Seetha | samsthām: who was staying in Ashoka grove. |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, the female-demons brought the aerial car, Pushpaka as per the instructions of Ravana and carried it nearer to Seetha who was staying in Ashoka-grove.

VERSE 13

ताम् आदाय तु राक्षस्यो भर्तृ शोक परायणाम्

tām ādāya tu rākṣasyo bhartṛ śoka parāyaṇām

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | rākṣasyaḥ: the female demons | ādāya: brought | tām sītām: that Seetha | bhartṛśoka parājitām: who was afflicted with grief for her husband | āropayāmāsuḥ: and made to ascend | puṣpakam vimānam: Pushpaka -plane. |

TRANSLATION

The female-demons brought Seetha who was afflicted with grief for her husband and made her to ascend Pushpaka-plane.

VERSE 14

ततः पुष्पकम् आरोप्य सीताम् त्रिजटया सह

tataḥ puṣpakam āropya sītām trijaṭayā saha

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | rākṣasyaḥ: the female-demons | trijaṭayāsaha: along with Trijata | āropya sītām: made Seetha to ascend | puṣpakam: Pushpaka-plane | jagmuḥ: and proceeded | darśayitum: to show | tasyai: her | rāma lakṣmaṇau: Rama and Lakshmana. |

TRANSLATION

The female-demons along with Trijata made Seetha to ascend Pushpaka-plane and proceeded to show her Rama and Lakshmana.

VERSE 15

रावणो अकारयल् लन्काम् पताका ध्वज मालिनीम्

rāvaṇo akārayal lankām patākā dhvaja mālinīm

SYNONYMS

16| rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | rākṣaseśvaraḥ: the king of demons | hṛṣṭaḥ: thrilled with rapture | kārayāmāsa: made | laṅkām: Lanka | patāka dhvaja mālinīm: garlanded with flags and banners | prāghoṣayata: and caused a proclamation | rāghavaḥ: Rama | lakṣmaṇaśca: and Lakshmana | hatau: had been slain | raṇe: in battle | indrajitā: by Indrajit. |

TRANSLATION

Ravana the king of demons, thrilled with rapture, caused Lanka to be garlanded with flags and banners and arranged a proclamation to be made in Lanka announcing that Rama and Lakshmana had been slain by Indrajit in battle.

VERSE 17

विमानेन अपि सीता तु गत्वा त्रिजटया सह
ददर्श वानराणाम् तु सर्वम् सिन्यम् निपातितम्

vimānena api sītā tu gatvā trijaṭayā saha
dadarśa vānarāṇām tu sarvam sinyam nipātitam

SYNONYMS

sītā: Seetha | trijaṭayā saha: along with Trijata | gatvā: went | vimānena: by that plane | dadarśa: and saw | sarvam: all | vānarāṇām sainyam: the monkey-troops | nipātitam: who had been slain. |

TRANSLATION

Seetha along with Trijata, transported by that plane, saw all the monkey-troops who had been slain.

VERSE 18

प्रहृष्ट मनसश् च अपि ददर्श पिशित अशनान्
वानरांश् च अपि दुह्ख आर्तान् राम लक्ष्मण पार्श्वतः

prahṛṣṭa manasaś ca api dadarśa piśita aśanān
vānarāṃś ca api duhkha ārtān rāma lakṣmaṇa pārśvataḥ

SYNONYMS

dadarśa: (Seetha) saw | piśitāśanān: the demons | prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ: who were delighted at heart | vānarāmśca: and monkeys | atiduḥkhārtān: who were disturbed with immense grief | rāmalakṣmaṇa pārśvataḥ: by the side of Rama and Lakshmana. |

TRANSLATION

Seetha saw the demons who were delighted at heart and monkeys disturbed with grief, standing round Rama and Lakshmana.

VERSE 19

ततः सीता ददर्श उभौ शयानौ शत तल्पयोः
लक्ष्मणम् चैव रामम् च विसम्ज्नौ शर पीडितौ

tataḥ sītā dadarśa ubhau śayānau śata talpayoḥ
lakṣmaṇam caiva rāmam ca visamjnau śara pīḍitau

SYNONYMS

20 tataḥ: then | sītā: Seetha | dadarśa: beheld | ubhau vīrau: those two warriors | rāmam ca: Rama | lakṣmaṇamcaiva: and Lakshmana | śayanau: lying | śara pīḍitau: riddled with weapons | visamjñau: unconscious | vidhvasta kavacau: their armour shattered | vipraviddha śarāsanau: their bows thrown at a distance | chinna sarvāṅgau: their entire body transfixed | sāyakaiḥ: by darts | śarastambamayau: on a bed of arrows | kṣitau: on the ground. |

TRANSLATION

Then, Seetha beheld those two warriors Rama and Lakshmana lying unconscious on the ground on a bed of arrows, their limbs pierced with arrows, riddled with weapons, their armour shattered, their bows cast aside at a distance and their entire body transfixed by darts.

VERSE 21

तौ दृष्ट्वा भ्रातरौ तत्र प्रवीरौ पुरुष ऋषभौ
शयानौ पुण्डरीकाक्षौ कुमाराविव पावकी

tau dṛṣṭvā bhrātarau tatra pravīrau puruṣa ṛṣabhau
śayānau puṇḍarīkākṣau kumārāviva pāvakī

SYNONYMS

22| dṛṣṭvā: on seeing | tau bhrātarau: those two brothers | pravīrau: who were filled with valour | puṇḍarīkākṣau: having lotus-eyes | puruṣarṣabhau: the excellent of men | śayanau śaratalpagatau: lying stretched on a bed of arrows | tatra: there | tathā bhūtau: in that wretched plight | kumārāviva: like the two sons | pāvakī: of the fire-god (shakha and Vishakha) (lying on a bed of reeds) | sītā: Seetha | vilalāpaha: wailed | karuṇam: piteously | subhṛśam duḥkhartā: stricken with a great agony. |

TRANSLATION

On seeing those two brothers, who were filled with valour, having lotus-eyes, the excellent of men, lying streteched on a bed of arrows there in that wretched plight like the two sons of the fire-god (Shkha and Vishakha) lying on a bed of reeds, Seetha wailed piteously, stricken as she was with a great agony.

VERSE 23

भर्तारमनवद्याङ्गी लक्ष्मणम् चासितेक्षणा
प्रेक्ष्य पांसुषु चेष्टन्तौ रुरोद जनकात्मजा

bhartāramanavadyāṅgī lakṣmaṇam cāsitekṣaṇā
prekṣya pāṃsuṣu ceṣṭantau ruroda janakātmajā

SYNONYMS

asitekṣaṇā: the dark-eyed | janakātmajā: Seetha the daughter of Janaka | anavadyāṇgī: with faultless limbs | prekṣya: beholding | bharatāram: her lord | lakṣmaṇam ca: and Lakshmana | ceṣṭantau: lying paamsuSu = in the dust | ruroda: burst into sobs. |

TRANSLATION

The dark-eyed Seetha the daughter of Janaka with her faultless limbs, beholding her lord and Lakshmana lying in the dust, burst into sobs.

VERSE 24

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे सप्तचत्वारिंशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe saptacatvāriṃśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

samīkṣya: witnessing | tau bhrātarau: those brothers | devasuta prabhāvau: the prominent sons of god | : that Seetha | sabāṣpa śokābhihatā: struck by grief with tears | vitarkayantī: believing | tayoḥ: their | nidhanam: death | jagāda: spoke | idam: these | vākyam: words | duḥkhānvitā: possessed with grief. |

TRANSLATION

Witnessing those brothers, the prominent sons of god, Seetha afflicted with tearful sorrow, believing their death, spoke with grief the following words.
