Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

स तु कृत्वा सुवेलस्य मतिम् आरोहणम् प्रति
लक्ष्मण अनुगतो रामह् सुग्रीवम् इदम् अब्रवीत्

sa tu kṛtvā suvelasya matim ārohaṇam prati
lakṣmaṇa anugato rāmah sugrīvam idam abravīt

SYNONYMS

2| saḥ rāmaḥ: that Rama | lakṣmaṇānugataḥ: who was followed by Lakshmana | kṛtvā: having made up | matim: his mind | ārohaṇam prati: to ascend | suvelasya: Mount Suvela | abravīt: spoke | śalakṣṇayā: with gentle | parayā: and prime | girā: voice | sugrīvam: to Sugreeva | vibhiṣaṇamca: and to Vibhishana | dharmazñam: the knower of what is right | niśācaram: a demon | anuraktam: devoted to him | mantrajñam: experienced in counsel |

TRANSLATION

Rama, who was followed by Lakshmana, having made up his mind to ascend Mount Suvela, spoke in a gentle and prime voice to Sugreeva and to Vibhishana who was the knower of what is right, a demon devoted to him who was experienced in counsel and a knower of prescribed rules (as follows):

VERSE 3

सुवेलम् साधु ज़ैल इन्द्रम् इमम् धातु ज़तैज़् चितम्
अध्यारोहामहे सर्वे वत्स्यामो अत्र निज़ाम् इमाम्

suvelam sādhu zaila indram imam dhātu zataiz citam
adhyārohāmahe sarve vatsyāmo atra nizām imām

SYNONYMS

adhyārohāmahe: we shall ascend up on high | imam: for this | suvelam śailendram: Suvela mountain | citam: shining | sādhu: well | dhātuśataiḥ: with hundreds of minerals | sarve: all of us | vatsyāmahe: will stay | atra: on this mountain | niśām: right. |

TRANSLATION

"We shall ascend up on high this Suvela mountain, shining well with hundreds of minerals. All of us will stay on this mountain for this night."

VERSE 4

लन्काम् च आलोकयिष्यामो निलयम् तस्य रक्षसह्
येन मे मरण अन्ताय हृता भार्या दुरात्मना

lankām ca ālokayiṣyāmo nilayam tasya rakṣasah
yena me maraṇa antāya hṛtā bhāryā durātmanā

SYNONYMS

5| ālokayiṣyāmaḥ ca: we shall see | laṅkām: Lanka | nilayam: the abode | tasya rākṣasaḥ: of that demon | yena: by whom | durātmanā: the evil minded | bhāryā: my wife | hṛtā: was taken away | maraṇāntāya: for the sake of his own death | dharmaḥ: virtue | navijñātaḥ: was not understaood | vṛttam: good character | na: was not seen | tathā: and | kulam: noble lineage | tat garhitam: that contemptible action | kṛtam: was done | nīcayā: with an inferior | rākṣasyā buddhyā: demoniacal mind. |

TRANSLATION

"We shall see Lanka the abode of that demon, Ravana the evil-minded by whom my wife was taken away for the sake of his own death, by whom virtue was not understood, good character was not known and noble lineage was not seen and by whom that contemptible act was done with an inferior demoniacal mind."

VERSE 6

यस्मिन् मे वर्धते रोषह् कीर्तिते राक्षस अधमे
यस्य अपराधान् नीचस्य वधम् द्रक्ष्यामि रक्षसाम्

yasmin me vardhate roṣah kīrtite rākṣasa adhame
yasya aparādhān nīcasya vadham drakṣyāmi rakṣasām

SYNONYMS

me: My | roṣaḥ: anger | vartate: is enhancing | kīrtite: on hearing the name | tasmin: of such | rākṣascadhame: worst demon | aparādhāt: Due to the offence | yasya: of whom | nīcasya: the lowest | drakṣyāmi: I shall see | vadham: the destroyer | rakṣasām: of the demons. |

TRANSLATION

"My anger is increased on hearing the name of that demon. Because of the offence committed by him, I shall see that all these demons are destroyed."

VERSE 7

एको हि कुरुते पापम् काल पाज़ वज़म् गतः
नीचेन आत्म अपचारेण कुलम् तेन विनज़्यति

eko hi kurute pāpam kāla pāza vazam gataḥ
nīcena ātma apacāreṇa kulam tena vinazyati

SYNONYMS

gataḥ: approaching | kālapāśavaśam: and falling into the power of trap of death | ekaḥ: one | kurute: will do | pāpam: an evil act | tena: by him | nīcena: the vilest | ātmāpacāreṇa: because of his offence | kulam: his lineage | vinaśyati: is destroyed. |

TRANSLATION

"Falling into that power of trap of death, one does an evil act. Because of the offence committed by him the vilest, his lineage is destroyed."

VERSE 8

एवम् सम्मन्त्रयन्न् एव सक्रोधो रावणम् प्रति
रामह् सुवेलम् वासाय चित्र सानुम् उपारुहत्

evam sammantrayann eva sakrodho rāvaṇam prati
rāmah suvelam vāsāya citra sānum upāruhat

SYNONYMS

rāmaḥ: Rama | evam: thus | sammantrayanneva: thinking | rāvaṇamprati: of Ravana | sakrodhaḥ: with anger | āsādya: approached | upāruthat: and ascended | suvelam: the mountain of Suvela | citrasānum: with its conspicuous summits. |

TRANSLATION

Rama, thus thinking of Ravana in anger, approached and ascended the mountain of Suvela with its conspicuous summits.

VERSE 9

पृष्ठतो लक्ष्मण च एनम् अन्वगच्चत् समाहितः
सज़रम् चापम् उद्यम्य सुमहद् विक्रमे रतः

pṛṣṭhato lakṣmaṇa ca enam anvagaccat samāhitaḥ
sazaram cāpam udyamya sumahad vikrame rataḥ

SYNONYMS

lakṣmaṇaśca: Lakshmana too | rataḥ: delighted in | vikrame: his valour | samāhitaḥ: and stead fasteness | udyamya: keeping ready | sumahat: his mighty | cāpam: bow | saśaram: wtih arrows | anragacchat: accompanied | pṛṣṭhataḥ: behind | evam: this Rama | sugrīvaḥ: Sugreeva | sāmātyaḥ: together with his ministers | savibhīṣaṇaḥ: along with vibhishana | anvārohat: ascended by following | tam: him. |

TRANSLATION

Lakshamana too who took delight in his own valour and steadfastness, keeping ready his mighty bow with arrows, followed behind Rama Sugreeva along with his ministers and Vibhishana ascended the mountain, by following him.

VERSE 10

हनूमान् अन्गदो नीलो मैन्दो द्विविद;एव च

hanūmān angado nīlo maindo dvivida;eva ca

13| hanumān: Hanuman | aṅgadaḥ: Angada | nīlaḥ: Nila | maindaḥ: Mainda | dvivida evaca: Dvivida | gajaḥ: Gaja | gavākṣaḥ: Gavaksha | gavayaḥ: Gavaya | śarabhaḥ: Sharabha | gandhamādanaḥ: Gandhamadana | panasaḥ: Panasa | kumudaścaiva: Kumuda | haraḥ: Hara | rambhaśca: Rambha | yūthapaḥ: the chief of the troop | jāmbavāmśca: Jambavan | suṣeṇaśca: sushena | mahāmatiḥ: the greatly wise | ṛṣebhaśca: Rishabha | durmukhaśca: Durmukha | mahātejāḥ: of great splendour | śatabaliḥ: shatabali | kapiḥ: the monkey | anyeca bahavo śataśaḥ: and other many hundreds of | te: those | vānarāḥ: monkeys | eteca: here | śīghragāminaḥ: which are fast moving | giricāriṇaḥ: which can wander easily on mountains | vāyuvega pravaṇāḥ: with a speed akin to that of wind | adhyārohanta: ascended | tam: that | suvelamgirim: Suvela mountain | yatra rāghavaḥ: where Rama was there. |

TRANSLATION

Hanuman, Angada, Nila, Mainda, Dvivida, Gaja, Gavaksha, Gavaya, Sharabha, Gandhamadana, Panasa, Kumuda, Hara, Rambha the chief of the troop, Jambavan, sushena, the greatly wise Rishabha, Durmukha of great splendour, Shatabali the monkey and other hundreds of monkeys which are fast-moving, which can wander easily on mountains with a speed akin to that of wind, ascended that Suvela mountain which Rama ascended.

VERSE 14

ते त्व् अदीर्घेण कालेन गिरिम् आरुह्य सर्वतह्

te tv adīrgheṇa kālena girim āruhya sarvatah

SYNONYMS

te tu: they | adīrghena kālena: within no long time | ārūhya: having ascended | girim: the mountain | sarvataḥ: from all sides | śikhare: and at the apex | tasya: of it | dadṛśaḥ: saw | purīm: the City of Lanka | viṣaktāmiva: which appeared hanging | khe: in the sky. |

TRANSLATION

Having ascended the mountain from all sides within no long time, they saw at its apex, the city of Lanka which appeared as though it was hanging in the sky.

VERSE 15

ताम् ज़ुभाम् प्रवत द्वाराम् प्राकार वर ज़ोभिताम्

tām zubhām pravata dvārām prākāra vara zobhitām

SYNONYMS

hariyūthapāḥ: the chiefs of monkey-troops | dadṛśaḥ: saw | tām śubhām laṅkām: that beautiful City of Lanka | pravaradvāram: having excellent gates | prākāravara śobhitām: enriched with exquisite ramparts | rākṣasa sampūrṇām: and pervaded with demons. |

TRANSLATION

The chiefs of monkey-troops saw that beautiful City of Lanka, furnished with excellent gates, enriched with exquisitc ramparts and pervaded all over with demons.

VERSE 16

प्राकार चय संस्थैज़् च तथा नीलैर् निज़ा चरैह्

prākāra caya saṃsthaiz ca tathā nīlair nizā caraih

SYNONYMS

te: those | hariśreṣṭhāḥ: excellent monkeys | dadṛśuḥ: saw | aparam: another | prākāram: rampart | kṛtam: formed | nīlaśca rākśasaiḥ: our of the black demons | prākara vara samsthaiḥ tathā: so standing together on that exquisite rampart. |

TRANSLATION

Those excellent monkeys saw another rampart formed out of the black demons so standing together scribble on that existing exquisite rampart.

VERSE 17

ते दृष्ट्वा वानराह् सर्वे राक्षसान् युद्ध कान्क्षिणह्

te dṛṣṭvā vānarāh sarve rākṣasān yuddha kānkṣiṇah

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: seeing | rākṣasān: the demons | yuddhakāṇkṣiṇaḥ: craving for war | sarve te vānarāḥ: all those monkeys | mumucuḥ: made | vividhān: various kinds | nādān: of sounds | tasya: that | rāmasya: Rama | paśyataḥ: was witnessing. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing the demons who were craving for war, all those monkeys made various types of noises, while Rama was witnessing the scene.

VERSE 18

ततो अस्तम् अगमत् सूर्यह् संध्यया प्रतिरन्जितह्

tato astam agamat sūryah saṃdhyayā pratiranjitah

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | sūryaḥ: the sun | pratiraṅjitaḥ: reddened | sandhyayā: by evening twillight | astam āgamat: wnet down | kṣapāca: (and) the night | pūrṇacandra pradīptā: shining with full moon | samativartata: arrived. |

TRANSLATION

Then, the sun reddened with evening-twillight went down and the night shining with full moon arrived.

VERSE 19

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे अष्टात्रिंशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe aṣṭātriṃśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | saḥ: that | rāmaḥ: Rama | sa lakṣmaṇaḥ: along with Lakshmana | harivāhinīpatiḥ: and Sugreeva the Lord of monkeys | yūthapa yūtha samyutaḥ: together with troops and captains of troops | pratinandya: greeted welcoming (and) | satkṛtaḥ: treated hospitably | vibhīṣaṇena: by Vibhishana | nyavasat: stayed | yathāsukham: happily | suvela pṛṣṭhe: on the mountain resort of Suvela |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, Rama along with Lakshmana as well as Sugreeva the Lord of monkeys together with troops and captions of troops, duly greeted welcomingly and treated hospitably by Vibhishana, halted happily on the mountain resort of Suvela.
