Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

नर वानर राजौ तौ स च वायु सुतः कपिः
जाम्बवान् ऋक्ष राजस्ः च राक्षसस्ः च विभीषणः

nara vānara rājau tau sa ca vāyu sutaḥ kapiḥ
jāmbavān ṛkṣa rājasḥ ca rākṣasasḥ ca vibhīṣaṇaḥ

TRANSLATION

Meanwhile, Rama the king of men and Sugreeva the Sovereign of monkeys, Hanuman the son of the wind, Jambavan the king of the Bears, Vibhishana the demon, Angada the son of Vali, Lakshmana, Sushena along with his kinsfolk, Mainda, Dvivida, Gaja, Gavaksha, Kumuda, Nala and Panasa, all having reached the enemy's territory, assembled to take counsel together.

VERSE 4

इयम् सा लक्ष्यते लन्का पुरी रावण पालिता
सासुर उरग गन्धर्वैर् अमरैर् अपि दुर्जया

iyam sā lakṣyate lankā purī rāvaṇa pālitā
sāsura uraga gandharvair amarair api durjayā

SYNONYMS

lakṣate: observe | iyam: this | : that very | laṅkāpurī: City of Lanka | rāvaṇapālitā: ruled by Ravana | durjayā: impregnable | amarairapi: even to celestials | sāsuraḥ: and the demons together | uraga gandharvaiḥ: or the uragas (the serpant-demons) and Gandharvas (Celestials musicians) |

TRANSLATION

"Observe this city of Lanka, ruled by Ravana, impregnable both to celestials and the demons together, or the uragas (the serpent-demons) and Gandharvas (celestial musicians)."

VERSE 5

कार्य सिद्धिम् पुरस् क्र्त्य मन्त्रयध्वम् विनिर्णये
नित्यम् सम्निहितो ह्य् अत्र रावणो राक्षस अधिपः

kārya siddhim puras krtya mantrayadhvam vinirṇaye
nityam samnihito hy atra rāvaṇo rākṣasa adhipaḥ

SYNONYMS

rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | rākṣasādhipaḥ: the Lord of Demons | nityam: always | samnihitaḥ hi: indeed stays | atra: there | mantrayadhvam: think | vinirṇaye: of determining our duty | puraskṛtya: with regard to | kārya siddhim: the success of our expedition. |

TRANSLATION

"Ravana, the lord of demons always stays in the City. Think of the ways and means for the success of our expedition."

VERSE 6

तथा तेषु ब्रुवाणेषु रावण अवरजो अब्रवीत्
वाक्यम् अग्राम्य पदवत् पुष्कल अर्थम् विभीषणः

tathā teṣu bruvāṇeṣu rāvaṇa avarajo abravīt
vākyam agrāmya padavat puṣkala artham vibhīṣaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

atha: then | teṣu: they | bruvāṇeṣu: were talking thus | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | rāvaṇāvarajaḥ: the younger brother of Ravana | abravīt: spoke | puṣkalārtham: meaningful | agrāmyapadavat: and polished | vākyam: words. |

TRANSLATION

While they were talking thus, Vibhishana the younger brother of Ravana spoke the following meaningful and polished words:

VERSE 7

अनलः शरभस्ः चैव सम्पातिः प्रघसस् तथा
गत्वा लन्काम् मम अमात्याः पुरीम् पुनर् इह आगताः

analaḥ śarabhasḥ caiva sampātiḥ praghasas tathā
gatvā lankām mama amātyāḥ purīm punar iha āgatāḥ

SYNONYMS

mama: My | amatyāḥ: counsellors | (named) analaḥ: Anala | panasaścaiva: and Panasa | sampātiḥ: Sampati | tathā: and | pramatiḥ: Pramati | gatā: went | laṅkāmpurīm: to the City of Lanka | punaḥ āgatāaḥ: and returned | iha: here. |

TRANSLATION

"My counsellors named Anala, Panasa, Sampati and Pramati went to the City of Lanka and returned here."

VERSE 8

भूत्वा शकुनयः सर्वे प्रविष्टास्ः च रिपोर् बलम्
विधानम् विहितम् यच् च तद् द्र्ष्ट्वा समुपस्थिताः

bhūtvā śakunayaḥ sarve praviṣṭāsḥ ca ripor balam
vidhānam vihitam yac ca tad drṣṭvā samupasthitāḥ

SYNONYMS

bhūtvā: by transforming into | śakunayaḥ: birds | sarve: all of them | praviṣṭāḥ: entered | rupoḥ: the enemy's balam = army | samupasthitāḥ: (they) came | dṛṣṭvā: after observing | yat: which | tat: that | vidhānam: arrangement | vihitam: was done. |

TRANSLATION

"Assuming the form of birds, all the four entered that enemy's citadel and observed the measures taken by Ravana closely."

VERSE 9

सम्विधानम् यथा आहुस् ते रावणस्य दुरात्मनः
राम तद् ब्रुवतः सर्वम् यथातथ्येन मे शृणु

samvidhānam yathā āhus te rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ
rāma tad bruvataḥ sarvam yathātathyena me śṛṇu

SYNONYMS

rāma: O | ṟama! śruṇu: hear | me: from me | bruvataḥ: telling | sarvam: all | yathātathyena: the exact position | yathā: as | te: they | āhuḥ: informed | samvidhānam: about the arrangement | rāvaṇasya: of Ravana | durātmanaḥ: the evil-minded. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Rama! I give a detailed report as it was given to me of the defence-arrangements made by tha evil-minded Ravana, hear me."

VERSE 10

पूर्वम् प्रहस्तः सबलो द्वारम् आसाद्य तिष्ठति
दक्षिणम् च महा वीर्यौ महा पार्श्व महा उदरौ

pūrvam prahastaḥ sabalo dvāram āsādya tiṣṭhati
dakṣiṇam ca mahā vīryau mahā pārśva mahā udarau

SYNONYMS

prahastaḥ: Prahasta | prabalaḥ: of great strenght | tiṣṭhati: is standing | āsādya: accussed | pūrvam dvāram: to the eastern gate | mahā pārśva mahodarau: Mahaparshva and Mahodara | mahāvīryau: of mighty prowess | dakṣiṇamca: the southern gate. |

TRANSLATION

"The very strong Prashata is standing near the eastern gate. Mahaparshva and Mahodara of mighty prowess are at the southern gate."

VERSE 11

इन्द्रजित् पश्चिम द्वारम् राक्षसैर् बहुभिर् वृतः
पट्टस असि धनुष्मद्भिः शूल मुद्गर पाणिभिः

indrajit paścima dvāram rākṣasair bahubhir vṛtaḥ
paṭṭasa asi dhanuṣmadbhiḥ śūla mudgara pāṇibhiḥ

SYNONYMS

indrajit: Indrajit | rāvaṇātmajaḥ: the son of Ravana | vṛtaḥ: along with | bahubhiḥ: many | rākṣasaiḥ: demons | pattiśāsidhanuṣmadbhiḥ: harpoon | śūla mudgaraḥ: spears and hammers | āvṛtaḥ: and along with | bhūraiḥ: warriors | nānāpraharaṇaiḥ: furnished with weapons of many kinds | paścimam dvāram: is at the western gate. |

TRANSLATION

"Indragit, the son of Ravana is at the western gate along with many demons armed with harpoons, swords, bows, spears and hammers together with warriors furnished with weapons of various kinds."

VERSE 12

राक्षसानाम् सहस्रैस् तु बहुभिः शस्त्र पाणिभिः

rākṣasānām sahasrais tu bahubhiḥ śastra pāṇibhiḥ

SYNONYMS

13| paramasamvigraḥ: a prey to great anxiety | rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | mantravit: knower of magical formulas | svayam: is himself | āsthitaḥ: stationed | uttaram nagaradvāram: at the northern gate | yuktaḥ: along with | rākṣasaiḥ: thousands | śatra pāṇibhiḥ: holding lances in their hand. |

TRANSLATION

"A prey to great anxiety, Ravana knower of magical formulas, is himself stationed at the northern gate, along with several thousands of demons holding lances in their hand."

VERSE 14

विरूप अक्षस् तु महता शूल खड्ग धनुष्मता
बलेन राक्षसैः सार्धम् मध्यमम् गुल्मम् आस्थितः

virūpa akṣas tu mahatā śūla khaḍga dhanuṣmatā
balena rākṣasaiḥ sārdham madhyamam gulmam āsthitaḥ

SYNONYMS

virūpakṣastu: as for virupaksha | mahatā balena: with a nighty army | śūla khedga dhanuṣmatā: armed with spears | rākṣasaiḥ sārdham: along with demons | āśritaḥ: occupies | madhyamam gulamam: the center of the fort. |

TRANSLATION

"As for Virupaksha he with mighty army carrying spears, clubs and bows along with other demons, occupies the center of the fort."

VERSE 15

एतान् एवम् विधान् गुल्माम्ल् लन्कायाम् समुदीक्ष्य ते
मामकाः सचिवाः सर्वे शीघ्रम् पुनर् इह आगताः

etān evam vidhān gulmāml lankāyām samudīkṣya te
māmakāḥ sacivāḥ sarve śīghram punar iha āgatāḥ

SYNONYMS

sarve: all | te mantriṇaḥ: those counsellors | māmakaraḥ: of mine | samudīkṣya: observed | etān: these | gulmān: arranged in this manner | laṅkāyām: in Lanka | punaḥ āgatāḥ: and returned | iha: here | śīghram: quickly. |

TRANSLATION

"All these counsellors of mine watched those groups of troops arranged in Lanka in this manner and immediately returned here."

VERSE 16

गजानाम् च सहस्रम् च रथानाम् अयुतम् पुरे
हयानाम् अयुते द्वे च साग्र कोटी च रक्षसाम्

gajānām ca sahasram ca rathānām ayutam pure
hayānām ayute dve ca sāgra koṭī ca rakṣasām

SYNONYMS

17| daśasāhasaram: ten thousand | gajānām: elephants | tathā: and | ayutam: ten thousand | ruthānām: chariots | dve ayutam: twenty thousand | hayānām: cavalry | sāgrā: a little more than | koṭiśca: crore | rakṣasām: foot soldiers | balavantaśca: who are strong | vikrāntāḥ: intrepid | ātatāyinaḥ: in battle | nityam: have even been | rākṣasa rājasya: of their sovereign's | iṣṭāḥ: favourites. |

TRANSLATION

"The elephants and chariots number some ten thousand each, the cavalry twenty thousand and there are more than a crore foot soldiers. These strong and intrepid demons endeavouring to kill someone in battle have ever been their sovereign's favourites."

VERSE 18

एक एकस्य अत्र युद्ध अर्थे राक्षसस्य विशाम् पते
परिवारः सहस्राणाम् सहस्रम् उपतिष्ठते

eka ekasya atra yuddha arthe rākṣasasya viśām pate
parivāraḥ sahasrāṇām sahasram upatiṣṭhate

SYNONYMS

viśāmpate: O | king! atra: in these demons | ekasya: for each | rākṣasya: demon | parivāraḥ: a retime | sahasrāṇām sahasram: of ten lacs | upatiṣṭhate: is near at land. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Rama! In these demons, a retinue of ten lacs each is near at hand for each demon."

VERSE 19

एताम् प्रवृत्तिम् लन्कायाम् मन्त्रि प्रोक्तम् विभीषणः
रामम् कमल पत्र अक्षम् इदम् उत्तरम् अब्रवीत्

etām pravṛttim lankāyām mantri proktam vibhīṣaṇaḥ
rāmam kamala patra akṣam idam uttaram abravīt

SYNONYMS

mahābāhuḥ: the mighty-armed | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | ādarśayat: showed | tān: those | rākṣasān: demons (his counsellors) | uktvā: after speaking | itām: this | pravṛttim: news | laṅkāyām: in Lanka | evam: thus | mantriproktām: spoken by his counsellors. |

TRANSLATION

The mighty armed Vibhishana showed those counsellors to Rama after reporting the aforesaid news pertaining to Lanka, thus informed by his counsellors.

VERSE 20

लङ्कायाम् सचिवैः रामाय प्रत्यवेदयत्
रामं कमलपत्राक्षमिदमुत्तरमब्रवीत्

laṅkāyām sacivaiḥ rāmāya pratyavedayat
rāmaṃ kamalapatrākṣamidamuttaramabravīt

SYNONYMS

sacivaiḥ: the counsellors | pratyavedayat: confirmed | sarvam: all that was known | laṅkāyām: regarding Lanks | śromān: the illustrious | rāvaṇāvarajaḥ: Vibhishana raama priya chikiirSayaa = in his desire to please Rama | abravīt: addressed | kamalapatrākṣam: that lotus-eyed | rāmam: Rama | uttaram: further | idam: with these words. |

TRANSLATION

The counsellors of Vibhishana themselves confirmed all that was known regarding Lanka. Thereafter, the illustrious Vibhishana, in his desire to please Rama, addressed that lotus-eyed one, further with the following words:

VERSE 21

कुबेरम् तु यदा राम रावणः प्रत्ययुध्यत

kuberam tu yadā rāma rāvaṇaḥ pratyayudhyata

SYNONYMS

22| rāma: O | yadā: when | rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | kuberam pratyayudhyata: attacked Kubera in battle | ṣaṣṭiḥ: sixty shatasahasraaaNi = lacs of raakSasaam = demons | niryānti: sallied forth | tadā: then(with him) | sadṛśā: (all of them) were similar | rāvaṇasya: to Ravana | durātmanaḥ: the evil minded | parākramaṇa: in prowess | vīryeṇa: in strength | tejasā: in splendour | stattvagouravāt: because of angmented courage | darpṇa: and a pride | atra: there. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Rama! When Ravana attacked Kubera in battle, sixty lacs of demons sallied forth with him. All of them were akin to the evil-minded Ravana in prowess, in strength, in courage and in pride."

VERSE 23

अत्र मन्युर् न कर्तव्यो रोषये त्वाम् न भीषये

atra manyur na kartavyo roṣaye tvām na bhīṣaye

SYNONYMS

manyuḥ: Indignation | na kartavyaḥ: is not required | atra: in this matter | tvām roṣaye: I am making you irritated | na bhīṣaye: and not terrifying | asihi: you are indeed | samarthaḥ: capable | nigrahe'pi: of even overpowering | surāṇām: the celestials | vīryeṇa: by your valour. |

TRANSLATION

"Indignation need not be resorted to (by you) based on this report. I am not terrifying you, bt only arousing your wrath. You are indeed capable of overpowering even celestials by your valour."

VERSE 24

तद् भवांस्ः चतुर् अन्गेण बलेन महता वृतः

tad bhavāṃsḥ catur angeṇa balena mahatā vṛtaḥ

SYNONYMS

tat: for this reason | vyūhya vānarānīkam: having set out these monkey forces in battle-array | bhavam: you | nirmathiṣyati: shall destroy | rāvaṇam: Ravana | idam: (with) this | vānarānīkam: army of monkeys | caraṇgeṇa balena: composed of four division | vṛtam: which surround you. |

TRANSLATION

"Having set out these monkey-forces in battle-array, you shall destryoy Ravana with this great army of monkeys, composed of four divisions, which surround you."

VERSE 25

रावण अवरजे वाक्यम् एवम् ब्रुवति राघवः

rāvaṇa avaraje vākyam evam bruvati rāghavaḥ

SYNONYMS

rāvaṇāvaraje: Vibhishana | bruvatisati: having spoken | vākyam: words | evam: thus | rāghavaḥ: Rama | abravīt: gave | idam: the following | vacanam: orders | pratighātārtham: for the attack | śatrūṇām: of the adversaries. |

TRANSLATION

Vibhishana having spoken thus Rama gave the following orders for the attack of the adversaries.

VERSE 26

पूर्व द्वारे तु लन्काया नीलो वानर पुम्गवः

pūrva dvāre tu lankāyā nīlo vānara pumgavaḥ

SYNONYMS

pūrva dvāre: at the eastern gate | laṅkāyāḥ: of Lanka | nīlaḥ: Nila | vānarapuṇgavaḥ: that lion among monkeys | syāt: for his part | vṛtaḥ: surrounded | bahubhiḥ: by many | vānaraiḥ: monkeys | prahasta pratiyoddhā: should attack Prahasta. |

TRANSLATION

"At the eastern gate of Lanka, Nila that lion among monkeys for his part, surrounded by many monkeys, should attack Prahasta."

VERSE 27

अन्गदो वालि पुत्रस् तु बलेन महता वृतः

angado vāli putras tu balena mahatā vṛtaḥ

SYNONYMS

dakṣiṇa dvāre: At the southern gate | aṇgadaḥ: Angada | vāliputraḥ: the son of Vali | vṛtaḥ: surrounded | mahatā: by his mighty | balena: army | bādhatām: should oppose | mahāpārśva mahodarau: Mahaparshva and Mahodara. |

TRANSLATION

"At the southern gate, Angada the son of Vali, surrounded by his mighty army, should oppose Mahaparshva and Mahodara."

VERSE 28

हनूमान् पश्चिम द्वारम् निपीड्य पवन आत्मजः

hanūmān paścima dvāram nipīḍya pavana ātmajaḥ

SYNONYMS

hanumān: Hanuman | pavanātmajaḥ: the son of wind | aprameyātmā: (and) of inscrutable spirit | vṛtaḥ: surrounded | bahubhiḥ: by a multitude | kapibhiḥ: of monkeys | niṣpīḍya: having crashed | paścima dvāre: into the western gate | praveśitu: enter (the City) |

TRANSLATION

"Let Hanuman that son of the Wind and of inscrutable spirit, surrounded by a multitude of monkeys, enter the City through the western gate."

VERSE 29

दैत्य दानव सम्घानाम् ऋषीणाम् च महात्मनाम्

daitya dānava samghānām ṛṣīṇām ca mahātmanām

SYNONYMS

31| aham: I | svayameva: am myself | dhṛtaḥ: determined | vadhe: to slay | tasya: that | kṣudraḥ: mean fellow | rākṣasendrasya: Ravana | yaḥ: who | varadān abalānivitaḥ: owing to the boon he has received | viprakāra priyaḥ: enjoys oppressing | daitya dānavasanghānām: multitudes of Daityas (giants) and daanavas (demons) | mahāt manām: as also the magnanimous | ṛṣīṇām ca: sages | parikrāmati: and who ranges | lokān: the worlds | samtāpayan: persecnting | sarvān: all | prajāḥ: being | saumitreṇa saha: with the aid of Lakshaman | aham: I | nipīḍya: shall forcibly | abhipravekṣyāmi: enter | uttaram nagara dvāram: the northern gate | rāvaṇaḥ: where Ravana is there | sabalaḥ: along with the army. |

TRANSLATION

I am myself determined to slay that wicked who owing to the boon he has received, enjoys oppressing multitudes of Daityas (gaints) and Daanavas (demons), as also the magnanimous sages and who ranges the world, persenting all being. With the aid of Lakshmana, I shall forcibly enter the northern gate where Ravana is stationed along with his army."

VERSE 32

वानर इन्द्रस्ः च बलवान् ऋक्ष राजस्ः च जाम्बवान्

vānara indrasḥ ca balavān ṛkṣa rājasḥ ca jāmbavān

SYNONYMS

balavān: the mighty | vānarendraśca: Sugreeva the king of monkeys | vīryavān: the valiant | ṛkṣarājaśca: jambavanshchaiva = and vibhishana | bhavatu: be | gulme: of the army. |

TRANSLATION

"Let the mighty Sugreeva the king of monkeys, the valiant Jambavan the king of bears and Vibhishana, the younger brother of the Lord of demons occupy the central position of the army."

VERSE 33

न च एव मानुषम् रूपम् कार्यम् हरिभिर् आहवे

na ca eva mānuṣam rūpam kāryam haribhir āhave

SYNONYMS

mānuṣam: Human | rūpam: form | na caiva kāryam: should not be assumed | haribhiḥ: by the monkeys | āhave: in battle | bale: in the army | vānare: of monkeys | eṣā: this monkey-shape | bhavatu: should be | samjñā: a sign of recognition | naḥ: among us | asmin: in this | yuddhe: battle. |

TRANSLATION

"Monkeys should not assume human form in the battle, for, in the army of monkeys, this monkey-shape should serve as a sign of recognition among us."

VERSE 34

वानरा;एव निश्चिह्नम् स्व जने अस्मिन् भविष्यति

vānarā;eva niścihnam sva jane asmin bhaviṣyati

SYNONYMS

35| asmin svajane: in our own people among us | vānarāḥ eva: the form of monkeys itself | bhaviṣyati: will become | cihnam: a sign of recognition | naḥ: for us | sapta: seven | vayam: fo us | yotsyāmahe: will attack | parān: the foe | mānuṣeṇaiva: in human form | eṣaḥ: this | aham: I | bhrātrā: my brother | lakṣmaṇena: Lakshmana | mohaujasā: who is full of valour | mama sakhā: my friend | ayam: this | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | paṅcamaḥ: the fifhth | ātmanā: with him (along with his four companions). |

TRANSLATION

"Among our own people also, the form of monkeys will become a sign of recognition for us. Seven of us will attack the foe in our human form, I, my brother Lakshmana, who is full of valour, my friend Vibhishana and his four companions."

VERSE 36

स रामः कार्य सिद्ध्य् अर्थम् एवम् उक्त्वा विभीषणम्

sa rāmaḥ kārya siddhy artham evam uktvā vibhīṣaṇam

SYNONYMS

37| uktvā: having said | evam: thus | vibhīṣaṇam: to Vibhishana | kṛtya siddhyartham: for the success of the enterprise | saḥ rāmaḥ: that Rama | matimān prabhuḥ: in the role of a wise leader | cakāra: made up | buddhim: his mind | suvelārohaṇe: to ascend Mount Suvela | ramaṇīyataram: the more charming | taṭam: slope | suvelasya gireḥ: of the Mount Suvela | dṛṣṭvā: (he) had observed. |

TRANSLATION

Having said thus to Vibhishana for the success of the enterprise, Rama in the role of a wise leader, decided to stay on Mount Suvela, after observing its charming slopes.

VERSE 38

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्ध कान्दे सप्तत्रिंशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddha kānde saptatriṃśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: Thereafter | pracchādi: having covered | sarvām pṛthivīm: the entire field | mahatā balena: with his great army | kṛtvā: having made up | matim: his mind | arivadhe: to slain the enemies | mahātmā: of great courage | rāmaḥ: Rama | abhijagāma: set out | laṅkām: for Lanka | prahṛṣṭa rūpaḥ: with a joyous and exultant air. |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, having covered the entire filed with his great army and having made up his mind to destroy the enemies, that high-souled Rama of great courage, set out for Lanka with a joyous and exultant air.
