Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

तेन शन्ख विमिश्रेण भेरी शब्देन राघवः
उपयतो महा बाहू रामह् पर पुरम् जयः

tena śankha vimiśreṇa bherī śabdena rāghavaḥ
upayato mahā bāhū rāmah para puram jayaḥ

SYNONYMS

rāmaḥ: Rama | mahā bāhuḥ: the mighty-armed | parapuranjayaḥ: conqueror of oppnents cities | upayāti: was sallied forth | tena: there | nādinā: with a resonant | bherīśabdena: roll of kattle drums | śaṅkha vimiśreṇa: mingled with the blast of couches. |

TRANSLATION

The mighty armed Rama, the conqueror of hostile cities sallied forth with the resonant roll of kettle drums, mingled with the blast of couches.

VERSE 2

तम् निनादम् निशम्य अथ रावणो राक्षस ईश्वरः
मुहूर्तम् ध्यानम् आस्थाय सचिवान् अभ्युदैक्षत

tam ninādam niśamya atha rāvaṇo rākṣasa īśvaraḥ
muhūrtam dhyānam āsthāya sacivān abhyudaikṣata

SYNONYMS

niśamya: hearing | atha: thereafter | tam: that | ninādam: sound | rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | rākṣaseśvaraḥ: the lord of demons | āsthāya: resorting to dhyaanam = meditation | muhūrtam: for a moment | abhyudaikṣata: looked towards | sacivān: his ministers. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing that sound, Ravana the Lord of demons, paused for a moment to reflect and looked towards his ministers.

VERSE 3

अथ तान् सचिवांस् तत्र सर्वान् आभाष्य रावणः
सभाम् सम्नादयन् सर्वाम् इत्य् उवाच महा बलः

atha tān sacivāṃs tatra sarvān ābhāṣya rāvaṇaḥ
sabhām samnādayan sarvām ity uvāca mahā balaḥ

SYNONYMS

atha: then | rāvaṇaḥ: Ravan | mahābalaḥ: of great strength | jagat samtāpanaḥ: the tormentor of the world | krūraḥ: a cruel demon | rākṣaseśvaraḥ: and the lord of demons | tatra: these | ābhāṣya: addressed | sarvām: the entire | sabhām: hall | uvāca: spoke | iti: as follows | agarhayan: accusing none. |

TRANSLATION

Ravana of great strength the tormentor of the world, and a cruel lord of demons then addressed all his ministers in a voice that resounded the entire hall as follows, accusing none.

VERSE 4

तरणम् सागरस्य अपि विक्रमम् बल संचयम्

taraṇam sāgarasya api vikramam bala saṃcayam

SYNONYMS

śrutam: It was heard | mayā: by me | tat: that | yat: which | uktavantaḥ: was told | bhavantaḥ: by you | rāmasya: of Rama's | taraṇam: crossing | asya sāgarasya: of this ocean | vikramam: his prowess | balapauruṣam: strength and heroism. |

TRANSLATION

"I have heard what you told me about Rama's crossing the ocean, his prowess, strength and heroism."

VERSE 5

भवतश्चाप्यहम् वेद्मि युद्धे सत्यपराक्रमान्

bhavataścāpyaham vedmi yuddhe satyaparākramān

SYNONYMS

aham: I | vedmi: know | satya parākramān: you are truly brave | yuddhe: in the field of battle | viditvā: yet on being aware | rāmavikramam: of that valour of Rama | bhavataścāpi: you too | īkṣataḥ: look | anyonyam: on each other | tūṣṇīkān: in silence. |

TRANSLATION

"I know that you are truly brave in the battle-field, yet, on beholding that valiant Rama, you too look on each other in silence."

VERSE 6

ततस् तु सुमहा प्राज्नो माल्यवान् नाम राक्षसः

tatas tu sumahā prājno mālyavān nāma rākṣasaḥ

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | vacaḥ: the words | rāvaṇasya: of Ravana | rākṣasaḥ: a demon | mālyavān nāma: called Malyavan | mātāmahaḥ: his maternal grandfather | sumahāprājñaḥ: the highly intelligent | tataḥ: then | abravīt: answered | iti: as follows: |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those word of Ravana whose maternal grandfather he was, the highly intelligent demon called Malyavan, answered him thus:

VERSE 7

विद्यास्वभिविनीतो यो राजा राजन् नय अनुगः

vidyāsvabhivinīto yo rājā rājan naya anugaḥ

SYNONYMS

rājam: O | king! saḥ: He | yaḥ: who | abhivinītaḥ: is well trained | vidyāsu: in (fourteen) sciences | nayānugaḥ: and follows the path prudence | śāsti: enjoys | aiśvaryam: sovereignty | ciram: for a long time | kurute: compels | arīmśca: his enemies too | vaśe: into sbujugation. |

TRANSLATION

"O, king! He who is well-versed in (fourteen)* sciences and follows the path of prudence, enjoys sovereignty for a long time and compels his enemies too into subjugation."

PURPORT

Four Vedas, six Vedaangas, the Puranas, the Mimamsa, Nyaya and Dharma together constitute fourteen sciences.
VERSE 8

संदधानो हि कालेन विगृह्णंस्ः चारिभिः सह

saṃdadhāno hi kālena vigṛhṇaṃsḥ cāribhiḥ saha

SYNONYMS

samdadhānaḥ: his indded concludes peace | aribhiḥ saha: even with enemies | vigṛhṇanca: or wages war | kālena: at a fitting tiem | kurvan vardhanam: strengthens svapakSe = his own party | aśnute: and attains | mahat: a great | aiśvaryam: power. |

TRANSLATION

"He who concludes peace even with enemies or wages war at a fitting time strengthens his own party and attains a great power."

VERSE 9

हीयमानेन कर्तव्यो राज्ना संधिः समेन च

hīyamānena kartavyo rājnā saṃdhiḥ samena ca

SYNONYMS

samdhiḥ: A treaty of peace | kartavyaḥ: should be reached | rājṅāḥ: by a king | hīyamānena: who is weaker | samena ca: or equal | na avamanyeta: He should not under rate | śatrum: that enemy | jyāyān: (A king who is) stronger | kurrvīta: should make | vigraham: war. |

TRANSLATION

"A treaty of peace should be reached by a king who is weaker or equal to an enemy. The king should never underrate that enemy. If the king is more powerful, he should make war on the enemy."

VERSE 10

तन्मह्यम् रोचते संधिः सह रामेण रावण

tanmahyam rocate saṃdhiḥ saha rāmeṇa rāvaṇa

SYNONYMS

rāvaṇa: O | tat: for that reason | samdhiḥ: alliance | rāmeṇa saha: with Rama | rocate: finds favour | mahyam: with me | sītā: (let) Seetha | yadartham: for whose sake | abhiyuktaḥ asi: you have been attacked by him | pradīyatām: be restored | tasmai: to him. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Ravana! For that reason, alliance with Rama finds favour with me. Let Seetha, for whose sake you are being attacked, be restored to him."

VERSE 11

तस्य देव ऋषयः सर्वे गन्धर्वास्ः च जय एषिणः

tasya deva ṛṣayaḥ sarve gandharvāsḥ ca jaya eṣiṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

sarve: all | devarṣayaḥ: the celestials | gandharvāśca: and Gandharvas the celestial musicians | jayaiṣiṇaḥ: wish for victory | tasya: of that Rama | tena: with him | samdhiḥ: (Let) alliance | rocatām: be agreable | te: to you. |

TRANSLATION

"All the celestials, sages and Gandharvas the celestial musicians are wishing for victory of Rama. Do not get an enmity with them. Let alliance with him be acceptable to you."

VERSE 12

असृजद् भगवान् पक्षौ द्वाव् एव हि पितामहः

asṛjad bhagavān pakṣau dvāv eva hi pitāmahaḥ

SYNONYMS

pitāmahaḥ: Brahma | bhagavān: the Lord (of creation) | āsṛjat: created | dvau eva: only two pakSau = classes of beings | surāṇāmca: the celestials | asurāṇāmca: and the demons | dharmādharmau: righteousness and unrighteousness | tadāśrayau: take refuge in them respectively. |

TRANSLATION

"Brahma, the lord of creation, created only two classes of beings, the celestials and the demons. Celestials take refuge in righteousness and demons in unrighteousness."

VERSE 13

धर्मो हि श्रूयते पक्षः सुराणाम् च महात्मनाम्

dharmo hi śrūyate pakṣaḥ surāṇām ca mahātmanām

SYNONYMS

rākṣasa: O | dharmaḥ: righteousness | śrūyate: is said to be | pakṣaḥ: on the side | mahātmānām: of the hight-souled | asurāṇām: celestials | adharmaḥ hi: unrighteiousness is indeed | rakṣasām: of ogres | asurāṇām ca: and demons. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Ravana! Righteous is said to be on the side of the high-souled celestials. Unrighteousness is indeed on the side of ogres and demons."

VERSE 14

धर्मो वै ग्रसते अधर्मम् ततः कृतम् अभूद् युगम्

dharmo vai grasate adharmam tataḥ kṛtam abhūd yugam

SYNONYMS

yadā: when | dharmaḥ: rightoeusness | grastae: swallows | abhūt: it becomes | kṛtam yugam: Kruta Yuga a golden age | adharmaḥ: (when) unrigheousness | dharmam: righteousness | tadā: then | pravartate: it stimulates | tiṣyaḥ: Kali Yuga the fourth age. |

TRANSLATION

"When righteousness swallows unrighteousness, it becomes kR^ita Yuga, a golden age. When unrighteousness swallows righteousness, it incites Kali Yuga the fourth age."

VERSE 15

तत् त्वया चरता लोकान् धर्मो विनिहतो महान्

tat tvayā caratā lokān dharmo vinihato mahān

SYNONYMS

tat: therefore | caratā: who were wandering | lokān: in the worlds | tvayā: by you | mahān: great | dharmo'pi: righteousness even | nihataḥ: was destroyed | adharmaḥ: (and) unrighteousness | pragṛhītaśca: was favoured too | tena: for that reason | pare: the enemies | balinaḥ: are stronger | asmat: than us. |

TRANSLATION

"Therefore, while you were wandering in the worlds, even the great righteousness was destroyed and unrighteousness favoured by you. So, the enemies are stronger than us."

VERSE 16

स प्रमादाद् विवृद्धस् ते अधर्मो अहिर् ग्रसते हि नः

sa pramādād vivṛddhas te adharmo ahir grasate hi naḥ

SYNONYMS

pramādāt: due to negligence | te: of you | saḥ: that | pravṛddhaḥ: well-grown | adharmaḥ: unrighteousness | grahate hi: is indded swallowing | naḥ: us | sura bhāvanaḥ: being favourable to demons | pakṣam: the sect | surāṇām: of demons | vivardhayati ca: is getting augmented. |

TRANSLATION

"Due to your negligence, that well nourished unrighteousness is swallowing us. Being favourable to demons, the sect of demons is thereby getting augmented."

VERSE 17

विषयेषु प्रसक्तेन यत् किंचित् कारिणा त्वया

viṣayeṣu prasaktena yat kiṃcit kāriṇā tvayā

SYNONYMS

mahān: A great | udvegaḥ: fear | janitaḥ: has been generated | ṛṣiṇām: in the sages | agnikalpānām: having the nature of fire | prasaktena: who are interested | viṣayeṣu: in sensual enjoyments | yatkincitkāriṇā: doing whatever you like. |

TRANSLATION

"You, who are interested in sensual enjoyments, doing whatever you like, have created a great alarm in the sages, having the nature of fire."

VERSE 18

तेषाम् प्रभावो दुर्धर्षः प्रदीप्त;इव पावकः

teṣām prabhāvo durdharṣaḥ pradīpta;iva pāvakaḥ

SYNONYMS

20| prabhāvah: the power | teṣām: of those sages | durdarṣah: is insurmountable | pradīptaḥ iva: like an igniting | pāvakaḥ: fire | bhāvitātmānaḥ: their minds purified | tapasā: by penance | ratāḥ: interested | anugrahe: in promotion | dharmasya: of righteousness | ete: these | dvijāyataḥ: Brahmanas | yat: for which reason | yajanti: they worship the gods | taistaiḥ: throught different | mukhyaiḥ: principal | yaṅaiḥ: sacrifices | juhvati: pour oblations | agnīmśca: into sacrificial fires | vidhivat: in due ceremonies | adhīyate: and read | vedān: the Vedas (sacred texts) | uccaiḥ: in a loud voice | abhibhūya: and having subdued | rakṣāmsi: the demons | udairayan: they continued to chant | brahmaghoṣān: the sacred texts | sarve: all demons | vipradrutāḥ: scattered | diśaḥ: in all directions | stanayitnuḥ: as thundering clouds | uṣṇage: in a hot season. | ipradrutāḥ: scattered |

TRANSLATION

"The power of those sages is insurmountable like an igniting fire. Having purified their minds through penance, they are intent on promotion of righteousness, in as much as these Brahamans worship the gods through different principal sacrifices, also pour oblations into the sacred fires with due ceremony and read the Vedas (Sacred texts) in a loud voice. Having subdued the demons, they continued to chant the sacred text, on hearing which all the demons scattered in all directions, as thundering clouds in a hot season."

VERSE 21

ऋषीणाम् अग्नि कल्पानाम् अग्नि होत्र समुत्थितः

ṛṣīṇām agni kalpānām agni hotra samutthitaḥ

SYNONYMS

dhūmaḥ: The smoke | agnihotra samutthitaḥ: coming forth from the sacred fire | ṛṣīṇām: of the sages | agnikalpānām: who resemble the fire ( in brilliance) | vyāpya: enveloping | diśaḥ: directions | ādatte: takes away | tejaḥ: the magical power | rakṣasām: of the demons. |

TRANSLATION

"The smoke coming forth from the sacred fire of the sage who resemble the fire (in brilliance), enveloping the ten directions, takes away the magical power of the demons."

VERSE 22

तेषु तेषु च देशेषु पुण्येषु च दृढ व्रतैः

teṣu teṣu ca deśeṣu puṇyeṣu ca dṛḍha vrataiḥ

SYNONYMS

tīvram: the severe | tapaḥ: austerity | caryamāṇām: practised | puṇyeṣṭyavadhṛta vrataiḥ: by the sages | teṣu teṣu: in different | deśeṣu: countries | samtāpayati: torment | rākṣasān: the demons. |

TRANSLATION

"The severe austerity practised by the sages, firm of resolve, in different countries torment the demons."

VERSE 23

देवदानवयक्षेभो गृहीतश्च वरस्त्वया

devadānavayakṣebho gṛhītaśca varastvayā

SYNONYMS

24| varaḥ: a boon | gṛhītaḥ: was recived | tvayā: by you | deva dānavayakṣebhyaḥ: from celestials | manuṣyāḥ: men | ṛkṣāḥ: bears | golāṇgūlāaḥ: and monkeys | balavantaḥ: who are powerful | dṛḍha vikramāḥ: having stron prowess | mahābalāḥ: and very efficacious | āgamya: are coming | iha: hither | garjanti: roaring like lions. |

TRANSLATION

"You received a boon of invincibility from celestials, demons and semi-divine beings, but then are men, bears as well as powerful and very efficacious having strong prowess who are coming hither, roaring like lions."

VERSE 25

उत्पातान् विविधान् दृष्ट्वा घोरान् बहु विधांस् तथा
विनाशम् अनुपश्यामि सर्वेषाम् रक्षसाम् अहम्

utpātān vividhān dṛṣṭvā ghorān bahu vidhāṃs tathā
vināśam anupaśyāmi sarveṣām rakṣasām aham

SYNONYMS

dṛṣṭvā: by seeing | vividhān: various kinds | utpātān: of unexpected events (portents) | tathā: and | bahuvidhān: many types | ghorān: of terrible things | aham: I | anupaśyāmi: am perceiving | vināśam: destruction | sarveṣām: of all | rakṣasām: the demons. |

TRANSLATION

"By seeing various kinds of unexpected events (portents) and many types of terrific things, I am perceiving a destruction of all the demons."

VERSE 26

खराभिस् तनिता घोरा मेघाह् प्रतिभयम् करः
शोणितेन अभिवर्षन्ति लन्काम् उष्णेन सर्वतः

kharābhis tanitā ghorā meghāh pratibhayam karaḥ
śoṇitena abhivarṣanti lankām uṣṇena sarvataḥ

SYNONYMS

ghorāḥ: terrific | pratibhayankarāḥ: and monstrous | maghāḥ: clouds | kharābhistanitāḥ: having harsh thundering sound | abhivarṣanti: are raining | uṣṇena: hot | śoṇitena: blood | sarvataḥ: throughtout | laṅkān: Lanka. |

TRANSLATION

"With terrifying clamour, monstrous clouds, inspiring horror, rain hot blood on Lanka on every side."

VERSE 27

रुदताम् वाहनानाम् च प्रपतन्त्य् अस्र बिन्दवः
ध्वजा ध्वस्ता विवर्णास्ः च न प्रभान्ति यथा पुरम्

rudatām vāhanānām ca prapatanty asra bindavaḥ
dhvajā dhvastā vivarṇāsḥ ca na prabhānti yathā puram

SYNONYMS

aśrubindavaḥ: drops of tears | prapatanti: fall | rudatām: from weeping | vāhanānām: elephnts | vivarṇāḥ: which became discoloured | rajodhvastāḥ: due to covering by dust | na prabhānti: and are not shining | yathāpuram: as before. |

TRANSLATION

"Drops of tears drop from the weeping elephants, horses etc., whose skins became discoloured, covered with dust and are not shining as before."

VERSE 28

व्याला गोमायवो ग्र्^ इध्रा वाशन्ति च सुभैरवम्
प्रविश्य लन्काम् अनिशम् समवायांस्ः च कुर्वते

vyālā gomāyavo gr^ idhrā vāśanti ca subhairavam
praviśya lankām aniśam samavāyāṃsḥ ca kurvate

SYNONYMS

vyālāḥ: flesh-eating animals | gomāyavaḥ: jackals | gṛdhrāḥ: eagles | vāśyanti: are howling | subhairavam: horribly | praviśya: and entering | laṅkām: Lanka | kurvate: they are forming | samavāyān ca: into groups | ārāme: in groves. |

TRANSLATION

"Flesh-eating animals, jackals and eagles and howling horribly. Entering Lanka, they are in the groves, forming into groups."

VERSE 29

कालिकाः पाण्डुरैर् दन्तैः प्रहसन्त्य् अग्रतः स्थिताः
स्त्रियः स्वप्नेषु मुष्णन्त्यो गृहाणि प्रतिभाष्य च

kālikāḥ pāṇḍurair dantaiḥ prahasanty agrataḥ sthitāḥ
striyaḥ svapneṣu muṣṇantyo gṛhāṇi pratibhāṣya ca

SYNONYMS

kālikāḥ: black | striyaḥ: women | pratibhāṣya: talking adversely | svapneṣu: in dreams | muṣṇantyaḥ: robbing | gṛhāṇi: the houses | sthitāḥ: stand | agrataḥ: in front | prahasanti: laughing | pāṇḍuraiḥ: with their white | dantaiḥ: teeth. |

TRANSLATION

"Black women, chattering incoherently in dreams and robbing different houses stand in front, laughing loudly with their white teeth."

VERSE 30

गृहाणाम् बलि कर्माणि श्वानः पर्युपभुन्जते
खरा गोषु प्रजायन्ते मूषिका नकुलैः सह

gṛhāṇām bali karmāṇi śvānaḥ paryupabhunjate
kharā goṣu prajāyante mūṣikā nakulaiḥ saha

SYNONYMS

śvānaḥ: dogs | paryupabhuṅjate: devour | balikarmāṇi: the sacred offerings | gṛhāṇi: in homes | kharāḥ: donkeys | prajāyante: are born | goṣu: of cows | mūṣakāḥ ca: and rats | nakuleṣu: of mongoose. |

TRANSLATION

"Dogs devour the sacred offerings offered in homes. Donkeys are born of cows and rats of mongoose."

VERSE 31

मार्जारा द्वीपिभिः सार्धम् सूकराः शुनकैः सह
किम्नरा राक्षसैस्ः च अपि समेयुर् मानुषैः सह

mārjārā dvīpibhiḥ sārdham sūkarāḥ śunakaiḥ saha
kimnarā rākṣasaisḥ ca api sameyur mānuṣaiḥ saha

SYNONYMS

mārjārāḥ: cats | sameyuḥ: mate | dvīpibhiḥ sārdham: with tigers | sūkarāḥ: pigs | śunakaiḥ saha: with dogs | kimnarāḥ: Kinnaras (a species of demi-gods with the human figure and the head of a horse or with a horse's body with the head of a man) | rākṣasaiścāpi: with demons | mānuṣaiḥ saha: and men. |

TRANSLATION

"Cats mate with tigers, pigs with dogs, Kinnaras (a species of demi-gods with the human figure and the head of a horse or with a horse's body and the head of a man) with demons and men."

VERSE 32

पाण्डुरा रक्त पादास्ः च विहगाः काल चोदिताः
राक्षसानाम् विनाशाय कपोता विचरन्ति च

pāṇḍurā rakta pādāsḥ ca vihagāḥ kāla coditāḥ
rākṣasānām vināśāya kapotā vicaranti ca

SYNONYMS

rakta pādāśca: red-footed and | pāṇḍurāḥ: white | kapotāḥ: pigeons | kāla coditāḥ: messengers of death | vicaranti: move in different directions | vināśāya: the extermination | rākṣasām: of demons. |

TRANSLATION

"Red-footed and white pigeons, messengers of death, move in different directions, foretelling the extermination of demons."

VERSE 33

वीचीकूचीति वाशन्त्यः शारिका वेश्मसु स्थिताः
पतन्ति ग्रथितास्ः च अपि निर्जिताः कलह एषिणः

vīcīkūcīti vāśantyaḥ śārikā veśmasu sthitāḥ
patanti grathitāsḥ ca api nirjitāḥ kalaha eṣiṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

veśmasu sthitāḥ: Domesticated | śārikāḥ: minas | vāśantya: making | cīcīkūci iti: a chirping sound | kalahaiṣibhiḥ: by other bellicose birds | patanti: drop down | gratjotāsjcjā[o: being twined together in groups. |

TRANSLATION

"Domesticated minas (a kind of birds) making a chirping sound, defeated by other bellicose birds drop down, being twined together in groups."

VERSE 34

पक्षिणश्च मृगाः सर्वे प्रत्यादित्यम् रुदन्ति ते
करालो विकटो मुण्डः पुरुषः कृष्ण पिन्गलः

pakṣiṇaśca mṛgāḥ sarve pratyādityam rudanti te
karālo vikaṭo muṇḍaḥ puruṣaḥ kṛṣṇa pingalaḥ

SYNONYMS

35| pakṣiṇaḥ: birds | te sarve: and all those | mṛgāḥ: wild animals | pratyādityam: turning towards the sun | rudanti: cryout | kālaḥ: death | karālaḥ: (in the from of) frightful | vikaṭaḥ: monstrous | paruṣaḥ: and cruel | kṛṣṇa priṅgalaḥ: blackish fellow | muṇḍaḥ: with a shaven head | anvavekṣate: casts his eyes | gṛhāṇi: on the dwellings | sarveṣāṇi: of all of us | kāle kāle: both morning and eening | etāni: these | anyāni: and other | duṣṭāni nimittāni ca: sinister omens | utpatanti: appear. |

TRANSLATION

"Birds and wild animals, facing towards the sun, cry out. Death, in the form of a frightful, monstrous and cruel blackish fellow with a shaven head casts his eyes on all our dwellings, both morning and evening. These and such other sinister omens appear."

VERSE 36

विष्णुम् मन्यामहे रामम् मानुषम् देहम् आस्थितम्
न हि मानुष मात्रो असौ राघवो दृढ विक्रमः

viṣṇum manyāmahe rāmam mānuṣam deham āsthitam
na hi mānuṣa mātro asau rāghavo dṛḍha vikramaḥ

37| manyāmahe: I deem | rāmam: Rama | dṛḍhavikramaḥ: of firm fortitude | viṣṇum: as Vishnu | āsthitam: dwelling | mānuṣam: in human | rūpam: form | asau: this | rāghavaḥ: Rama | na hi: is not indeed | mānuṣa mātraḥ: a mere human being | yena: he by whom | saḥ: that paramaadbhutaH = most wonderful | setuḥ: bridge | baddhaḥ: was built | samudre: across the sea | rāvaṇa: O | kuruṣva: conclude | samdhim: peace | rāmeṇa: with Rama | nara rājena: who is the king of men | jñātvā: having come to know | karmāṇi: of his acts | āyatikṣamam: let that which is good for the future | kriyatām: be done | avadhārya: after a mature understanding. |

TRANSLATION

"I deem Rama of firm fortitude as Vishnu dwelling in human form. This Rama is not a mere human being, he by whom that most wonderful bridge was built across the sea. O, Ravana! Conclude peace with Rama, who is the king of men. Having come to know of his acts, let that which is good for the future be done after a mature understanding."

VERSE 38

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे पञ्चत्रिंशः सर्गः

TRANSLATION

Having spoken thus, the mighty Malyavan, who was foremost in valour among the bravest warriors, being aware of what was passing in Ravana's mind, eyeing him, became silent.
