Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

शुकेन तु समाख्यातांस् तान् दृष्ट्वा हरि यूथपान्
लक्ष्मणम् च महावीर्यम् भुजम् रामस्य दक्षिणम्

śukena tu samākhyātāṃs tān dṛṣṭvā hari yūthapān
lakṣmaṇam ca mahāvīryam bhujam rāmasya dakṣiṇam

TRANSLATION

Beholding those foremost of monkey leaders pointed out by Shuka- the most valiant Lakshmana; Rama's right arm, his own brother Vibhishana standing close to Rama, the terribly powerful Sugreeva the king of all monkeys, the strong Angada grandson of Indra the wielder of thunderbolt, the powerful Hanuman, the imincible Jambavan, Sushena, Kumuda, Nila, Nala the excellent of monkeys, Gaja, Gavaksha, Sharabha, Mainda and Dvivida- that Ravana - his heart became agitated a little, was enraged and then abused those two heroes Shuka and Sarana who had completed their report.

VERSE 6

अधो मुखौ तौ प्रणताव् अब्रवीत् शुक सारणौ
रोष गद्गदया वाचा सम्रब्धः परुषम् वचः

adho mukhau tau praṇatāv abravīt śuka sāraṇau
roṣa gadgadayā vācā samrabdhaḥ paruṣam vacaḥ

SYNONYMS

(ṟavana) abravīt: spoke | tau: to those | śuka sāraṇau: Shuka and Sarana | praṇatau: who saluted | adhomukhau: with their faces bent donw | vācā: in a voice | roṣagadgadayā: choked in anger | samrabdham: excited | tathā: and paruSam = and harsh. |

TRANSLATION

Ravana spoke (the following) excited and harsh words, in a voice choked in anger to Shuka and Sarana who stood saluting with their faces bent down.

VERSE 7

न तावत् सदृशम् नाम सचिवैर् उपजीविभिः
विप्रियम् नृपतेर् वक्तुम् निग्रह प्रग्रहे विभोः

na tāvat sadṛśam nāma sacivair upajīvibhiḥ
vipriyam nṛpater vaktum nigraha pragrahe vibhoḥ

SYNONYMS

na tāvatnāma: It is not | sadṛśam: befitting | vaktum: to utter | vipriyam: unpleasant words | upajivibhiḥ: by dependent | sacivaiḥ: ministers | nṛpate: to their king | prabhoḥ: who has the power | nigrahe: to mete out punishment | pragrahe: or reward. |

TRANSLATION

"It is not befitting to utter unpleasant words by dependent ministers to their king who has the power to mete out any punishment or reward."

VERSE 8

रिपूणाम् प्रतिकूलानाम् युद्ध अर्थम् अभिवर्तताम्
उभाभ्याम् सदृशम् नाम वक्तुम् अप्रस्तवे स्तवम्

ripūṇām pratikūlānām yuddha artham abhivartatām
ubhābhyām sadṛśam nāma vaktum aprastave stavam

SYNONYMS

sadṛśam nāma: Is it proper | vaktum: to utter | stavam: praise | vipūṇām: of the enemies | pratikūlānām: who are adverse to us | abhivartatām: and who are coming | yuddhartham: for war | ubhābhyām: by both of you | aprastave: irrelevantly? |

TRANSLATION

"Is it proper for both of you to shower irrelevant praise on our enemies who are adverse to us and are approaching for a war?"

VERSE 9

आचार्या गुरवो वृद्धा वृथा वाम् पर्युपासिताः
सारम् यद् राज शास्त्राणाम् अनुजीव्यम् न गृह्यते

ācāryā guravo vṛddhā vṛthā vām paryupāsitāḥ
sāram yad rāja śāstrāṇām anujīvyam na gṛhyate

SYNONYMS

vṛthā: in vain | paryupāsitāḥ: have you sat at the feet | ācāryāḥ: of your elders | guravaḥ: and your preceptors | vṛddhāḥ: and the aged | yat: since | sāram: the essence | anujīvyam: to be followed | rāja śastrāṇām: from political sciences | nagṛhyate: has not been grasped | vām: by both of you. |

TRANSLATION

"In vain have you sat at the feet of your elders, your preceptors and the aged, since the essence to be followed from political sciences has not been grasped by both of you."

VERSE 10

गृहीतो वा न विज्ञातो भारो ज्ञानस्य वा उच्यते
ईदृशैः सचिवैर् युक्तो मूर्खैर् दिष्ट्या धरामि अहम्

gṛhīto vā na vijñāto bhāro jñānasya vā ucyate
īdṛśaiḥ sacivair yukto mūrkhair diṣṭyā dharāmi aham

SYNONYMS

grahitaḥ: or if you have imbibed them | na vijñāto rā: you have not remembered them | vāhyate vā bhāraḥ: you are over-burdened | ajñānasya: with ignorance | yuktaḥ: being associated | īdṛśaiḥ: with such | saciraiḥ: ministers | murkhaiḥ: who are fools | diṣṭyā: it is a miracle | dharāmi: I am able to retain my sovereignity. |

TRANSLATION

"Or if you have imbibed them, you have not remembered them. You are over-burdened with ignorance! Being associated with such foolish ministers, it is a miracle that I am still able to retain my sovereignty."

VERSE 11

किम् नु मृत्योर् भयम् न अस्ति माम् वक्तुम् परुषम् वचः
यस्य मे शासतो जिह्वा प्रयच्चति शुभ अशुभम्

kim nu mṛtyor bhayam na asti mām vaktum paruṣam vacaḥ
yasya me śāsato jihvā prayaccati śubha aśubham

SYNONYMS

nāsti kimnu: have you no | bhayam: fear | mṛtyoḥ: of death | vaktum: to speak | paruṣam: (such) rude | vacaḥ: words | mām: to me | prayacchati: who dispenses | śubhāśubham: good and evil | yasyame: by my | jihvā: tongue | śāsataḥ: which commands. |

TRANSLATION

"Have you no fear of death that you dare address me thus rudely, I whose tongue that you dare tongue dispenses good and evil?"

VERSE 12

अपि एव दहनम् स्पृष्ट्वा वने तिष्ठन्ति पादपाः
राज दोष परामृष्टास् तिष्ठन्ते न अपराधिनः

api eva dahanam spṛṣṭvā vane tiṣṭhanti pādapāḥ
rāja doṣa parāmṛṣṭās tiṣṭhante na aparādhinaḥ

SYNONYMS

pādapāḥ: trees | tiṣṭhanti: survive | vane: in the forest | spṛṣṭvā apyaiva: even if disturbed | dahanam: by fire | aparādhinaḥ: the guilty | na tiṣṭhante: cannot survive | raja daṅḍaparāmṛṣṭāḥ: if touched by the royal scepter. |

TRANSLATION

"Trees may survive in the forest, even if disturbed by fire. But the guilty cannot survive, if touched by the royal scepter."

VERSE 13

हन्याम् अहम् इमौ पापौ शत्रु पक्ष प्रशंसकौ
यदि पूर्व उपकारैर् मे न क्रोधो मृदुताम् व्रजेत्

hanyām aham imau pāpau śatru pakṣa praśaṃsakau
yadi pūrva upakārair me na krodho mṛdutām vrajet

SYNONYMS

yadi: If | me: my | krodhaḥ: anger | na vrajet mṛdutām: is not softened | pūrvopakāraiḥ: by the services they rendered earlier | aham: I | hanyām: would have killed | imau pāpau: these two miscreants | satrupakṣapraśamsinau: who are praising the band of enemies. |

TRANSLATION

"If my anger is not softened by the services they rendered earlier, I would have killed thse two miscreants who are praising the band of enemies."

VERSE 14

अपध्वंसत गच्चध्वम् सम्निकर्षाद् इतो मम
न हि वाम् हन्तुम् इच्चामि स्मरन्न् उपकृतानि वाम्

apadhvaṃsata gaccadhvam samnikarṣād ito mama
na hi vām hantum iccāmi smarann upakṛtāni vām

SYNONYMS

apadhvamsata: keep away | mama: from my | itaḥ: this | samnikarṣāt: neighbourhood | na śyadhvam: do not be seen anywhere here | smarāni: I am recollectin | vām: you | upakṛtāni: services | na icchāmi: I do not wish | hantum: to kill | dvau: both of you | kṛtaghnau: who are ungrateful | snehaparāṅmukhau: and affection-less | mayi: towards me | hatāveva: are just as dead. |

TRANSLATION

"Keep away from my neighbourhood. Do not be seen anywhere here. I am recollecting your past services and hence do not wish to kill you. Both of you, who are ungrateful and unfaithful towards me, are just as dead to me."

VERSE 15

एवम् उक्तौ तु सव्रीडौ ताव् उभौ शुक सारणौ

evam uktau tu savrīḍau tāv ubhau śuka sāraṇau

SYNONYMS

tau śukasāriṇau: those Shuka and Sarana | evam: thus | uktau: told | savrīdau: they were ashamed | dṛṣṭvā: having seen | rāvaṇam: Ravana | niḥsṛtau: and went away | pratinandya: having enlogised | jayaśabdena: with words of victory. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing Ravana's words, Shuka and Sarana felt ashamed to see Ravana paid obeisance to him saying, "Be thou victorious!" and went away.

VERSE 16

अब्रवीत् स दशग्रीवः समीपस्थम् महाउदरम्

abravīt sa daśagrīvaḥ samīpastham mahāudaram

SYNONYMS

niśācaraḥ: the deomon | daśagrīvaḥ: Ravana | abravīt: spoke | mahodaram: to Mahodara | samipastham: who was standing nearby (as follows):- upasthaaya = bring | me: me | cārān: spies | śīghram: quickly. |

TRANSLATION

The demon Ravana spoke to Mahodara who was standing nearby as follows: "Bring me the spies here quickly."

VERSE 17

महोदरस्तथोक्तस्तु शीघ्रमाज्ञापयच्चरान्

mahodarastathoktastu śīghramājñāpayaccarān

SYNONYMS

18| mehodaraḥ: Mahodara | tathā: thus | uktaḥ: spoken | śīghram: quickly | ājñāpayat: ordered | carān: for the spies | tataḥ: then | cārāḥ: the spies | prāptāḥ: who came | samtvaritāḥ: hurriedly | pārthiva śāsanat: as per the order of the king | prāñjalayaḥ: paid obeisance by joining their palms | upasthitāḥ: and approached | vadhayitvā: having felicitated (Ravana) | jayāśiṣaḥ: expressing their desire to see him victorious. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those words, Mahodara immediately ordered for the spies. The spies came hurriedly as per the orders of the king, paid obeisance to him by joining their palms and approached him, having made a complement expressing their desire to see him victorious.

VERSE 19

तान् अब्रवीत् ततो वाक्यम् रावणो राक्षस अधिपः

tān abravīt tato vākyam rāvaṇo rākṣasa adhipaḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | rākśasādhipaḥ: the king of demons | abravīt: spoke | vākyam: (these) words | tān carān: to those spies | prātyayikam: who were faithful | śūrān: brave | dhīrān: energetic | vigata sādhvasān: and free from fear. |

TRANSLATION

Then, Ravana the king of demons spoke the following words to those spies, who were faithful, brave, energetic and free from fear:

VERSE 20

इतो गच्चत रामस्य व्यवसायम् परीक्षथ

ito gaccata rāmasya vyavasāyam parīkṣatha

SYNONYMS

gacchata: you go | itaḥ: from here | parīkśitum: to investigate | vyavasāyam: about the first impression | rāmasya: about Rama | ye: (as regards) who | abhyantarāḥ: are the intimate friends | asya: to him | samāgatāḥ: and those who joined | tena: with him | prītyā: in affection. |

TRANSLATION

"You go from here to investigate about the first impression concerning Rama, as regards who are his intimate friends and in respect of those who joined on his side with a liking towards him."

VERSE 21

कथम् स्वपिति जागर्ति किम् अन्यच् च करिष्यति

katham svapiti jāgarti kim anyac ca kariṣyati

SYNONYMS

katham: how | svapiti: sleeping? Jaagarti = and waking up? Kim = what | kariṣyati: will he do | adya: now? Aagantavyam = you ought to come | vijñāya: after acquainting with | sarvam: all this | aśeṣāḥ: completely | nipuṇam: and skillfully. |

TRANSLATION

"Find out what are his hours of sleeping and waking and what he intends to do next. You ought to come here, after acquainting with all this information completely and skillfully."

VERSE 22

चारेण विदितः शत्रुः पण्डितैर् वसुधा अधिपैः

cāreṇa viditaḥ śatruḥ paṇḍitair vasudhā adhipaiḥ

SYNONYMS

vasudhādhipaiḥ: by kings | paṇḍitaiḥ: who are shrewd | śatruḥ: an enemy | yuddhe: in battle | samāsādhya: who is got | cāreṇa: through spies | nirasyate: will be defeated | svalpena: with a little | yatnena: of effort. |

TRANSLATION

"An enemy in battle, got known through spies by kings, will be defeated with only a little of effort."

VERSE 23

चारास् तु ते तथा इति उक्त्वा प्रहृष्टा राक्षस ईश्वरम्

cārās tu te tathā iti uktvā prahṛṣṭā rākṣasa īśvaram

SYNONYMS

te: those | cārāstu: spies on their part | prahṛṣṭāḥ: were delighted | uktvā: spoke | tatheti: "May it be so" | kṛtvā: kept | śārdūlam: Shardula | agrataḥ: in front | cakruḥ: and made | pradakśiṇam: clockwise circumambulation | rākśasesvaram: around Ravana. |

TRANSLATION

Those spies on their part delightfully replied, "May it be so", kept Shardula in their front and made their circumambulation clockwise around Ravana.

VERSE 24

ततस्तम् तु महात्मानम् चारा राक्षससत्तमम्

tatastam tu mahātmānam cārā rākṣasasattamam

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | cārāḥ: the spies | pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā: having made the circumambulation | tam: that | rākṣasa sattamam: excellent demon | mahātmānam: the distinguished | jagmuḥ: and went | yatra: to the place where | rāmaḥ: Rama | salakṣmaṇaḥ: along with Lakshmana (were there). |

TRANSLATION

Having thus made circumambulation to Ravana the excellent and the distinguished demon, the spies went to the place where Rama along with Lakshmana were there.

VERSE 25

ते सुवेलस्य शैलस्य समीपे राम लक्ष्मणौ

te suvelasya śailasya samīpe rāma lakṣmaṇau

SYNONYMS

gatvā: having gone | pracchannāḥ: in a disguised manner | te: they | dadṛśuḥ: saw | rāmalakśmaṇau: Rama and Lakshman | sa sugrīva vibhīṣaṇau: together with Sugreeva and Vibhishana | sanīpe: in the vicinity | suvelasya śailasya: of mountain Suvela. |

TRANSLATION

Having gone in a disguised manner, those spies saw Rama and Lakshman together with Sugreeva and Vibhishana in the neighbourhood of Mountain Suvela.

VERSE 26

प्रेक्षमाणाश्चमूम् ताम् च बभूवुर्भयविह्वलाः

prekṣamāṇāścamūm tām ca babhūvurbhayavihvalāḥ

SYNONYMS

prekśamāṇāḥ: seeing | tām camūm: that army | te rākśasāḥ: those demons | babhūvuḥ: became | bhayavihvalāḥ: overwhelmed with fear | dṛṣṭāḥ: and were observed | rākśasendreṇa: by Vibhishana the Lord of demons | dharmātmanā: the high-souled. |

TRANSLATION

Seeing that army, those demons became overwhelmed with fear. However, they were observed by the high-souled Vibhishana the Lord of demons.

VERSE 27

विभीषणेन तत्रस्था निगृहीता यदृच्चया

vibhīṣaṇena tatrasthā nigṛhītā yadṛccayā

SYNONYMS

yard^icchayā: accidentally | tatrasthāḥ: the demons there | nigṛhītāḥ: were caught | vibhīṣaṇena: by Vibhishana | iti: saying that | ayam: this | rākṣasaḥ: demon | pāpaḥ: was a wicked person | śārdūlaḥ tu: Shardula | ekaḥ: alone | grāhitaḥ: was got seized. |

TRANSLATION

Accidentally, the deomons there were caught by Vibhishana, who said that the demon Shardula among them was wicked and got him alone seized.

VERSE 28

मोक्षितः सो।अपि रामेण वध्यमानः प्लवङ्गमैः

mokṣitaḥ so|api rāmeṇa vadhyamānaḥ plavaṅgamaiḥ

SYNONYMS

so'pi: that Shardula also | vadhyamānaḥ: who was about to be killed | plavaṅgamaiḥ: by the monkeys | mocitaḥ: was got released | rāmeṇa: by Rama | pare: the other | rākṣasāḥ: demons | mokṣitāḥ: wee got released | anṛśamsena: the kind man. |

TRANSLATION

That Shardula also, who was going to be killed by the monkeys, was got released by Rama. The other demons also were got released by Rama, the kind man.

VERSE 29

वानरैर् अर्दितास् ते तु विक्रान्तैर् लघु विक्रमैः

vānarair arditās te tu vikrāntair laghu vikramaiḥ

SYNONYMS

te: those demons | arditāḥ: harassed | vānaraiḥ: by the monkeys | vikrāntaiḥ: the courageous | laghuvikramaiḥ: and the quick-footed | naṣṭacetasaḥ: became insensible | śvasantaḥ: heaved a sigh | anuprāptāḥ: and reached | laṅkām: Lanka | punaḥ: again. |

TRANSLATION

Those demons, harassed by the courageous and the quick-paced monkeys, became insensible, heaved a sigh and reached back Lanka.

VERSE 30

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे एकोनत्रिंशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe ekonatriṃśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

cārāḥ: (those) spies | nityacarāḥ: mahaabalaaH = valiant | niśācarāḥ: rangers of the night | tataḥ: thereafter | upasthitāḥ: approached | daśagrīvam: Ravana | nyavedayan: and informed him | rāma balam: that Rama's army | samīpavāsinam: was camping in the vicinity | suvelasya: of the Suvela mountain. |

TRANSLATION

Those spies, who always wander outside and who were valiant rangers of the night, thereafter approached Ravana and informed him that Rama's army was camping in the vicinity of the Suvela mountain.
