Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

सारणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा रावणम् राक्षस अधिपम्
बलम् आलोकयन् सर्वम् शुको वाक्यम् अथ अब्रवीत्

sāraṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā rāvaṇam rākṣasa adhipam
balam ālokayan sarvam śuko vākyam atha abravīt

SYNONYMS

atha: then | śrutvā: hearing | vacaḥ: the words | sāraṇasya: of Sarana | śukaḥ: Shuka | ādiśya: pointing out | sarvam: all | tat: that | balam: army | abravīt: (and) spoke | vākyam: (the following) words | rāvaṇam: to Ravana | rākṣasādhipam: the Lord of demons. |

TRANSLATION

After listening to Sarana's words Shuka, pointing out all that army of monkeys, spoke the following words to Ravana the Lord of Demons.

VERSE 2

स्थितान् पश्यसि यान् एतान् मत्तान् इव महाद्विपान्
न्यग्रोधान् इव गान्गेयान् सालान् हैमवतीन् इव

sthitān paśyasi yān etān mattān iva mahādvipān
nyagrodhān iva gāngeyān sālān haimavatīn iva

SYNONYMS

3| rājan: O | king! ẏān: those | etān: whom | paśyasi: you are seeing | sthitān: standing (here) | ete: they | mahādvipāniva: are like huge elephants | mattān: in rut | nyagrodhāniva: like banyan trees | gāṅgeyān: relating to the River Ganga | sālāniva: like Sala trees | haimavatān: on Himalaya mountains | duṣprasahāḥ: who are irresistible | balinaḥ: strong ones | kāma rūpiṇaḥ: who can change their form at their will | daityadānava samkāśāḥ: equal to celestials and demons | devaparākramāḥ: having a prowess of celestials | yuddhe: in battle. |

TRANSLATION

"O, king! Do you observe those monkeys resembling huge elephants in rut, rising like banyan trees on the banks of River Ganga or Sala trees on Himalayas? Those warriors, able to change their form at will, are irresistible, equal to celestials and demons, and in a battle, are endowed with the valour of the gods."

VERSE 4

एषाम् कोटि सहस्राणि नव पन्च च सप्त च
तथा शन्ख सहस्राणि तथा वृन्द शतानि च

eṣām koṭi sahasrāṇi nava panca ca sapta ca
tathā śankha sahasrāṇi tathā vṛnda śatāni ca

SYNONYMS

eṣām: their (are) | nava: mine | paṅcaca: five | saptaca: seven | koṭisahasrāṇi: thousand crores | tathā: and | śaṇkusahasrāṇi: thousand Shakus* | vṛndaśatānica: hundred Vrindas. |

TRANSLATION

"There are twenty one thousand crores, a thousand Shankus and a hundred Vrindas of these monkeys."

PURPORT

The number exactly corresponding to a Shanku and a Vrinda should be understood as calculated at the end of this chapter.
VERSE 5

एते सुग्रीव सचिवाः किष्किन्धा निलयाः सदा
हरयो देव गन्धर्वैर् उत्पन्नाः काम रूपिणः

ete sugrīva sacivāḥ kiṣkindhā nilayāḥ sadā
harayo deva gandharvair utpannāḥ kāma rūpiṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

ete: these monkeys | sugrīva sacivāḥ: the attendants of Sugreeva | utpannāḥ: born | devagandharvaiḥ: of celestials and celestial musicians | kāma rūpiṇaḥ: are able to change their form at will | sadā: and always | kiṣkindha nilayāḥ: stay in Kishkindha. |

TRANSLATION

"These monkeys, the attendants of Sugreeva born of celestials and celestial musicians, are able to change their form at will and always stay in Kishkindha."

VERSE 6

यौ तौ पश्यसि तिष्ठन्तौ कुमारौ देव रूपिणौ
मैन्दः च द्विविदः च उभौ ताभ्याम् न अस्ति समो युधि

yau tau paśyasi tiṣṭhantau kumārau deva rūpiṇau
maindaḥ ca dvividaḥ ca ubhau tābhyām na asti samo yudhi

SYNONYMS

tau: those | yau: whom | paśyati: you are seeing | tiṣṭhantau: standing | devarūpiṇau: with celestial appearance | samānau: with the same resemblance | maindaśca: are Mainda | dvividaścaiva: and Dvivida | nāsti: nonw | samanaḥ: is equal taabhyaam = to both of them | yudhi: in battle. |

TRANSLATION

"The two who stand there, who have the same resemblance and have the appearance of celestials, are Mainda and Dvivida. None can equal them in combat."

VERSE 7

ब्रह्मणा समनुज्ञाताव् अमृत प्राशिनाव् उभौ
आशंसेते युधा लंकाम् एतौ मर्दितुम् ओजसा

brahmaṇā samanujñātāv amṛta prāśināv ubhau
āśaṃsete yudhā laṃkām etau marditum ojasā

SYNONYMS

eatu: these | ubhau: two | amṛta prāśinau: who ate ambrosion | samanujñātau: with due authorization | brahmaṇā: from Brahma | āśampete marditum: to destroy | laṅkām: Lanka | ojasā: by their power. |

TRANSLATION

"These two, who ate ambrosion on due authorization by Brahma, are hopefully of destroying Lanka by their power."

VERSE 8

यम् तु पश्यसि तिष्ठन्तम् प्रभिन्नम् इव कुन्जरम्
यो बलात् क्षोभयेत् क्रुद्धः समुद्रम् अपि वानरः

yam tu paśyasi tiṣṭhantam prabhinnam iva kunjaram
yo balāt kṣobhayet kruddhaḥ samudram api vānaraḥ

TRANSLATION

"As for that monkey who you see there, resembling an intoxicated elephant, who in strength and fury is able to churn up the ocean itself, it is he who came to Lanka to find Seetha and spy on you, O, Lord! See that monkey, who was seen earlier and who appears here again."

VERSE 10

ज्येष्ठः केसरिणः पुत्रो वात आत्मज इति श्रुतः
हनूमान् इति विख्यातो लन्घितो येन सागरः

jyeṣṭhaḥ kesariṇaḥ putro vāta ātmaja iti śrutaḥ
hanūmān iti vikhyāto langhito yena sāgaraḥ

SYNONYMS

yena: by whom | sāgaraḥ: the ocean | laṅkitaḥ: was traversed | jyeṣṭhaḥ: is the eldest | putraḥ: son | kesariṇaḥ: of Kesari | śrutaḥ: known as | vātātmajaḥ: the son of wind-god | vikhyātaḥ: and famous | hanumāniti: as Hanuman. |

TRANSLATION

"This monkey, by whom the ocean was traversed, is the eldest son of Kesari. He is known as the son of wind-god and famously called as Hanuman."

VERSE 11

काम रूपी हरि श्रेष्ठो बल रूप समन्वितः
अनिवार्य गतिः चैव यथा सततगः प्रभुः

kāma rūpī hari śreṣṭho bala rūpa samanvitaḥ
anivārya gatiḥ caiva yathā satatagaḥ prabhuḥ

SYNONYMS

hariśreṣṭhaḥ: this excellent monkey | kāmarūpaḥ: is able to assume any form at will | balarūpasamanvitaḥ: endowed with great strength and good form | satatagaḥ: always moving | prabhuḥ yathā: like the god (of wind) | anivāryagatiścaiva: with an uninterrupted mobility. |

TRANSLATION

"This excellent monkey can assume any form at will. He is endowed with a good strength and form always moving like the wind-god, having an uninterrupted mobility."

VERSE 12

उद्यन्तम् भास्करम् दृष्ट्वा बालः किल पिपासितः
त्रियोजन सहस्रम् तु अध्वानम् अवतीर्य हि

udyantam bhāskaram dṛṣṭvā bālaḥ kila pipāsitaḥ
triyojana sahasram tu adhvānam avatīrya hi

SYNONYMS

13| bālaḥ: this Hanuman | bubhukṣitaḥ: he desired to eat | dṛṣṭvā: on seeing | udyantam: a rising | bhāskaram: sun | avatīrya: took off | adhvānam: to a distance | triyojana sahasram: of three thousand | iti: thus | niścitya: reflectin | manasā: in his mind | āhariṣyāmi: I shall seize hold | ādityam: of the sun | me: and my | kṣut: hunger | na pratiyāsyati: will not be appeased (otherwise) | pupluve kila: they say he leapt up(into the air) | baladarpitaḥ: intoxicated as he was with his strength. |

TRANSLATION

"While yet a child, seeing the sun rise, he desired to eat it and took off to a distance of three thousand yojanas (or twenty four thousand miles) reflecting: �I shall seize hold of the sun and my hunger will not be appeased otherwise' and they say, he leapt up (into the air) intoxicated as he was with his own strength."

VERSE 14

अनाधृष्यतमम् देवम् अपि देव ऋषि दानवैः
अनासाद्य एव पतितो भास्कर उदयने गिरौ

anādhṛṣyatamam devam api deva ṛṣi dānavaiḥ
anāsādya eva patito bhāskara udayane girau

SYNONYMS

anāsādyaiva: without even reaching | devam: the sun | anādhṛṣyatamam: who cannot be meddled much with | devarṣi rākṣasairapi: even by celestials | patitaḥ: he fell | girau: on a mountain | bhāskaradoyane: where that radiant or rises. |

TRANSLATION

"Without even reaching the sun, which is most unassailable even to celestials, sages or demons, he however fell on a mountain, where that radiant orb rises."

VERSE 15

पतितस्य कपेर् अस्य हनुर् एका शिला तले
किंचिद् भिन्ना दृढ हनोर् हनूमान् एष तेन वै

patitasya kaper asya hanur ekā śilā tale
kiṃcid bhinnā dṛḍha hanor hanūmān eṣa tena vai

SYNONYMS

ekā: one | hanuḥ: jaw | asya: of this | kapiḥ: monkey | patitasya: who fell down | śilātale: on the head of a rock | bhagnā: was fractured | kimcit: a little | tena: for that reason | eṣaḥ: he who | dṛḍhahanuḥ: has a strong jaw | hanūmān: is called Hanuman. |

TRANSLATION

"One of the jaws of this monkey who fell down on the head of the rock, was a little fractured. For this reason, because of his strong jaw, he is called Hanuma."

VERSE 16

सत्यम् आगम योगेन मम एष विदितो हरिः
न अस्य शक्यम् बलम् रूपम् प्रभावो वा अनुभाषितुम्

satyam āgama yogena mama eṣa vidito hariḥ
na asya śakyam balam rūpam prabhāvo vā anubhāṣitum

SYNONYMS

eṣaḥ: this | hariḥ: monkey | viditaḥ: is known | mama: to me | satyam: actually | āgamayogena: through the words of my bosom friends | na śakyam: It is not possible | anubhaṣitam: to describe | asya: his | balam: strength | rūpam: or physical form | prabāvovā: or glory. |

TRANSLATION

"This monkey is known to me actually through the words of my bosom friends. It is not possible to describe his strength or physical form or glory."

VERSE 17

एष आशंसते लंकाम् एको मर्दितुम् ओजसा
येव जाज्वल्यते।असौ वै धूमकेतुस्तवाद्य वै

eṣa āśaṃsate laṃkām eko marditum ojasā
yeva jājvalyate|asau vai dhūmaketustavādya vai

SYNONYMS

eṣaḥ: He | ekaḥ: alone | āśamsate: experts | mathitum: to destroy | laṅkām: Lanka | ojasā: by his | katham: how | vismarate: do you forget | kapim: this monkey | yena: by whom | nihitaḥ: was kept | asau: this | dhūmaketuḥ: fire | adyavai: which is still | jājvalyate: blazing up | tava: in your | laṅkāyām: Lanka. |

TRANSLATION

"He alone wants to destroy Lanka by his valour. How do you forget this monkey by whom this fire was lighted and is still blazing up Lanka."

VERSE 18

यः च एषो अनन्तरः शूरः श्यामः पद्म निभ ईक्षणः

yaḥ ca eṣo anantaraḥ śūraḥ śyāmaḥ padma nibha īkṣaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

"he alone wants to destroy Lanka by his valour. How do you forget this monkey by whom this fire was lighted and is still blazing up Lanka." 18. raajan = O | yaḥ eṣaḥ: this warrior | anantaraḥ: who is immediately after Hanuma | śyāmaḥ: dark of hue | padmanibhekṣaṇaḥ: with eyes like lotuses | atirathaḥ: a chief warrior | ikṣvākūṇām: among Ikshvakus | viśruta pauruṣaḥ: his heroism is well-known | loke: in the world | yasmin: whose | dharmaḥ: sense of duty | nacalate: never wavers | nātivartate: nor does he ever transgress | dharmam: the righteousness | yaḥ: who | veda: to know (to loose) | brāhmam astram: Bhrahma's weapon | vedāmśca: and is conversant with the Veda | varaḥ: he is the most learned | veda vidām: of Vedic scholars | bindyāt: shatters | yaganam: the firmament | bāṇaiḥ: with his arrows | dārayet: and rends | medinīmcāpi: the earth even | yasya: whose | krodhaḥ: anger | mṛtyoriva: is equal to that of Death | parākramaḥ: and valour | śakrasyeva: equal to that of Indra the god of celestials | bhāryā: consort | sītā: is Seetha | hṛtā: who was taken away | tvayā: by you | janasthānāt: from a place called Janasthana | saḥ: he | eṣaḥ: is this | rāmaḥ: Rama | abhivartate: is approaching | tvām: you | yoddhum: to wage war. |

TRANSLATION

"Nearby is a warrior, dark of hue with eyes like lotuses, a chief warrior among Ikshvakus, his heroism is well-known in the world, his sense of duty never wavers, nor does he ever transgress the righteousness, he knows to loose Brahma's weapon and is conversant with Veda, he is the most learned of the Vedic scholars, he shatters the firmament with his arrows, and rends even the earth, his anger is akin to that of Death, his valour equal to that of Indra the god of celestials, his consort is Seetha who was taken away by you from a place called Janasthana, he is Rama who has come to wage war on you, O king!"

VERSE 22

यः च एष दक्षिणे पार्श्वे शुद्ध जाम्बू नद प्रभः

yaḥ ca eṣa dakṣiṇe pārśve śuddha jāmbū nada prabhaḥ

SYNONYMS

23| eṣaḥ: this (man) | śuddha jāmbūnada prabhaḥ: having a radiance of pure gold | viśālavakṣāḥ: with a broad chest | tāmrākṣaḥ: having red eyes | nīlakuṅcita mūrdhajaḥ: with black and curled hair | dakṣiṇe pārśve: standing at the right side | yasya: of which Rama | eṣaḥ: he | lakśmaṇonāma: is Lakshmana by name | rataḥ: interest | priyahite: in care and welfare | bhrātruḥ: of his brother | kuśalaḥ: skilled | maye: in leadership | yuddheca: in a combat | varaḥ: excellent | sarvaśastrabhṛtām: among the wielders of all weapons. |

TRANSLATION

"This man, having the radiance of pure gold, with a broad chest, having red eyes, with black and curled hair, standing at the right side of Rama, he is called Lakshmana, who is interested in the care and welfare of his brother, skilled in leadership of combat and excellent among the wielders of all weapons."

VERSE 24

अमर्षी दुर्जयो जेता विक्रान्तो बुद्धिमान् बली

amarṣī durjayo jetā vikrānto buddhimān balī

SYNONYMS

amarṣī: an angry person | durjayaḥ: difficult to be conquered | jetā: a conquere | buddhimān: a wise man | balī: a strong man | nityam: forever | dakṣiṇaḥ bāhuḥ: a right arm | rāmasya: of Rama | bahiścaraḥ: and an outward moving | prāṇaḥ: life (of Rama). |

TRANSLATION

This Lakshmana is an angry person, difficult to be conquered, victorious, wise and mighty. He has always been the right arm of Rama and in outward moving life (of Rama).

VERSE 25

न हि एष राघवस्य अर्थे जीवितम् परिरक्षति

na hi eṣa rāghavasya arthe jīvitam parirakṣati

SYNONYMS

eṣaḥ: He | na parirakṣati hi: does not indeed care | jīvitam: for his life | rāghavasyārthe: in the cause of Rama | eṣaiva: He alone | āśamsate: wishes | nihantum: to kill | sarvarākśasān: all the demons | yuddhe: in battle. |

TRANSLATION

"He does not indeed care for his life in the cause of Rama. He alone wishes to kill all the demons in battle."

VERSE 26

यस् तु सव्यम् असौ पक्षम् रामस्य आश्रित्य तिष्ठति

yas tu savyam asau pakṣam rāmasya āśritya tiṣṭhati

SYNONYMS

yaḥtu: He who | asau: that | tiṣṭhati: is standing | āśritya: taking guard | savyam: at the left | pakṣam: side | rāmasya: of Rama | rakṣogaṇa parikṣiptaḥ: surrounded by a troop of demons | eṣaḥ: he | rājāḥ: is the king | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana. |

TRANSLATION

"He who is standing there, taking guard at the left side of Rama, surrounded by a troop of demons he is the king Vibhishana."

VERSE 27

श्रीमता राज राजेन लंकायाम् अभिषेचितः

śrīmatā rāja rājena laṃkāyām abhiṣecitaḥ

SYNONYMS

eṣaḥ: He abhiSechitaH = who was consecrated as a king | laṅkāyām: for Lanka | raja rājena: by Rama the king of kings | śrīmatā: the illustrious man | pratisamrabdhaḥ: being enraged | tvāmeva: with you really | abhivartate: is to attack | yuddhāya: for the battle. |

TRANSLATION

"He, who was consecrated as a king for Lanka by the illustrious Rama, the king of kings, is enraged really with you and is to attack us in the battle."

VERSE 28

यम् तु पश्यसि तिष्ठन्तम् मध्ये गिरिम् इव अचलम्

yam tu paśyasi tiṣṭhantam madhye girim iva acalam

SYNONYMS

32| yam: (the other) whom | paśyasi: you see | girimiva: like a mountain | acalam: which is unshakable | tiṣṭhantam: and standing | madhye: in the midst of monkeys | bhartāram: as a Lord | sarvaśākhā mṛgendrāṇām: of all chiefs of monkeys | amitaujasam: with a boundless energy | yaḥ: who | himavān parvataḥ iva: like a Himalayan hill | atibabhrāja: very much | kapīn: the other monkeys | tejasā: by his splendour | yaśasā: by his glory | buddhyā: by his wisdom | balena: by his strength | abhijanena: and by his noble descent | samdhyāste: occupies | pradhānaiḥ: yuuthapaiH saha = along with chiefs of army generals | guhām: secret place | kiṣkindhām: called Kishkindha | sagahana drumām: with forsts and trees | durgām: and inaccessible | parvatadurgamyām: because of impassable mountains | yasyām: in which | pratiṣṭhitā: is established | lakśmīḥ: in good fortune | devamanuṣyāṇām: of celestials and human beings | yasya: whose | kāntā: charming | śata puṣkarā: hundred lotused | kāṇcanī: golden coloured | mālā: garland | śobhate: is beautifying | eṣā: this sugriivaH = is Sugreeva | tām: this | mālām: garland | tārām: Tara | śāsvatam: as well as permanent | kapirājyam ca: kingdom | pratipāditaḥ: were presented | rāmeṇa: by Rama | hatvā: after having killed | vālinam: Vali. |

TRANSLATION

"The other whom you see as an unshakable mountain and standing in the centre of monkeys as a Lord of all chiefs of monkeys, with a boundless energy and who, like a Himalayan hill, very much radiating the other monkeys by his splendour, glory, wisdom, strength and his noble descent, who occupies along with the chiefs of Army Generals, a secret place called Kishkindha, with its forests and trees and the place inaccessible because of its impassable mountains, in which is established a good fortune of celestials and human beings, whose charming and golden coloured garland with hundred lotuses is beautifying, that person is Sugreeva. This garland along with a lady called Tara as well as the permanent kingdom of monkeys were presented to him by Rama after having killed Vali (Sugreeva's brother)."

VERSE 33

शतम् शतसहस्राणाम् कोटिमाहुर्मनीषिणः

śatam śatasahasrāṇām koṭimāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

manīṣiṇaḥ: wise men | āhuḥ: say | śatam: a hundred | śata sahasrāṇām: lakhs | koṭim: as a crore | (and) śatam: a hundred | koṭisahasrāṇām: thousand crores | abhidhīyate: is reckoned | śankuḥ: as a Shanku. |

TRANSLATION

"Wise men call a hundred lakhs as a crore. A hundred thousand crores is reckoned as a Shanku."

VERSE 34

शतम् शङ्कुसहस्राणाम् महाशङ्कुरिति स्मृतः

śatam śaṅkusahasrāṇām mahāśaṅkuriti smṛtaḥ

TRANSLATION

"A hundred thousand Shankus are said to be one Maha Shanku. A hundred thousand Maha Shankus are called one Vrindam here. A hundred thousand Vrindas are said to be one Maha vrindam. A hundred thousand Mahavrindas are called one Padmam here. A hundred thousand padmas are said to be one Mahapadmam. A hundred thousand Mahapadmas are called one Kharvam here. A hundred thousand kharvas are said to be one Mahakharvam. A hundred thousand Mahakharvas are called one Samundram. A hundred thousand Samudras are said to be one ogha here. A hundred thousand oghas are acclaimed a one Mahaugha."

VERSE 39

एवम् कोटि सहस्रेण शन्कूनाम् च शतेन च

evam koṭi sahasreṇa śankūnām ca śatena ca

43| eṣaḥ sugrīvaḥ: this Sugreeva | vānarandraḥ: the king of monkeys | mahābala parākramaḥ: having great strength and valour | nityam: always | mahābalavṛtaḥ: surrounded by a large army | anuvartate: is approaching | tvām: you | yuddhārtham: for the sake of doing war | parivāritaḥ: accompanied by | vīreṇa: by the valiant | vibhīṣaṇena: Vibhishana | sacivaiḥ: the ministers | evam: and indeed | śatenaca: hundred | koṭisahasreṇa: thousand crores | śaṅkūnām: of Shankus | mahāśaṅku sahasreṇa: a thousand of Mahashankus | tathā: and | vṛnda śatenaca: a hundred Vrindas | mahāvrinda sahasreṇa: a thousand Mahavrindas | padmaśatenaca: a hundred Padmas | mahāpadma sahasreṇa: a thousand Mahapadmas | kharva śatena: a hundred kharvas | tenava: Same numbered (a hundred) samudreNa = Samudras | tathaivaca: and | mahanghena: Mahanghas | koṭimahanghena: a crore of Mahanghas | samudra sadṛśena ca: and (the whole army) of identical an ocean. |

TRANSLATION

"This Sugreeva, the king of monkeys, having great strength and valour, always surrounded by a colossal army, is approaching you to make war, accompanied by the valiant Vibhishana and the ministers, as also a hundred thousand crores of Shankas, a thousand Mahashankus, a hundred Vrindas, a thousand mahavrindas, a hundred padmas, a thousand Mahapadmas, a hundred kharves, samudras and Mahaughas of the same number, and a crore of Mahanghas wholearmy as such is identical of an ocean."

VERSE 44

इत्यार्षे स्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे अष्टाविंशः सर्गः

ityārṣe srīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe aṣṭāviṃśaḥ sargaḥ

mahārāja: O | samīkśya: carefully observing | imam: this | vāhinīm: army | upasthitām: which arrived | prajvalita grahopamām: much the same as a blazing planet | vidhīyatām: perfom | paramaḥ: a great | prayatnaḥ: effort | yathā: so as | syāt: to obtain | jayaḥ: victory | tataḥ: thereafter | ma: and not (to get) | parābhavaḥ: defeat | pariaḥ: from the enemies. |

TRANSLATION

"O, king! Carefully observing this army, which appears much the same as a blazing planet, prepare yourself for a great effort to get victory and take measures to avoid defeat from the enemies."
