Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

सबले सागरम् तीर्णे रामे दशरथ आत्मजे
अमात्यौ रावणः श्रीमान् अब्रवीत् शुक सारणौ

sabale sāgaram tīrṇe rāme daśaratha ātmaje
amātyau rāvaṇaḥ śrīmān abravīt śuka sāraṇau

SYNONYMS

rāme: (While) Rama | daśarathātmaje: the son of Dasaratha | tīrṇe: crossed | sāgaram: the ocean | sabale: along | śrīmān: the illustrious | rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | abravīt: spoke | śukasāraṇau: to Shuka and sarana | amātyau: his ministers (as follows) |

TRANSLATION

While Rama, the son of Dasaratha, crossed the ocean along with his army, the illustrious Ravana spoke to Shuka and Sarana, his ministers as follows:

VERSE 2

समग्रम् सागरम् तीर्णम् दुस्तरम् वानरम् बलम्
अभूत पूर्वम् रामेण सागरे सेतु बन्धनम्

samagram sāgaram tīrṇam dustaram vānaram balam
abhūta pūrvam rāmeṇa sāgare setu bandhanam

SYNONYMS

samagram: the entire | bala: army | vānaram: of monkeys | tīraṇam: crossed | dustaram: the impassable | sāgaram: ocean | abhūtapurvam: the unprecedented | setubandhanam: construction of the bridge | sāgare: across the ocean (was done) | rāmeṇa: by Rama. |

TRANSLATION

"The entire army of monkeys crossed the impassable ocean. The construction of the bridge, unprecedented, across the ocean was executed by Rama."

VERSE 3

सागरे सेतु बन्धम् तु न श्रद्दध्याम् कथंचन
अवश्यम् च अपि सम्ख्येयम् तन् मया वानरम् बलम्

sāgare setu bandham tu na śraddadhyām kathaṃcana
avaśyam ca api samkhyeyam tan mayā vānaram balam

SYNONYMS

na śraddhadhyām: I am not able to believe | kathamcana: under any circumstances | tam: that | setubandham: construction of the bridge | sāgare: across the ocean | avaśyam: certainly | tat: that | vānaram balam: army of monkeys | samkhyeyamca: is worth to be conduted (carried weight) | mayā: by me. |

TRANSLATION

"I am not able to believe under any circumstances that a pass-way has been constructed across the ocean. Certainly, that army of monkeys is worth to be counted (carried weight) by me."

VERSE 4

भवन्तौ वानरम् सैन्यम् प्रविश्य अनुपलक्षितौ
परिमाणम् च वीर्यम् च ये च मुख्याः प्लवम् गमाः

bhavantau vānaram sainyam praviśya anupalakṣitau
parimāṇam ca vīryam ca ye ca mukhyāḥ plavam gamāḥ

TRANSLATION

"Become unrecognisable to others, enter the army of monkeys and make out the real quantum of their army, their prowess, as to which monkeys are important among them, which ministers of Rama and Sugreeva have come together, which monkeys are abiding in front, which monkeys are valiant, how that bridge was constructed across the ocean full of water, how the encamping is done for those great-souled monkeys; the determination, strength and the striking senses of Rama and of the heroic Lakshmana."

VERSE 8

कः च सेना पतिस् तेषाम् वानराणाम् महाओजसाम्
एतज् ज्ञात्वा यथा तत्त्वम् शीघ्रम् अगन्तुम् अर्हथः

kaḥ ca senā patis teṣām vānarāṇām mahāojasām
etaj jñātvā yathā tattvam śīghram agantum arhathaḥ

SYNONYMS

kaḥ: who | senāpatiḥ: is the chief of army | teṣām: of those | mahātmanām: high-souled | vānarāṇām: monkeys | ṅātvā: knowing | tatca: that also | yathātattvam: actually | śīghram: and quickly | arhathaḥ: you ought | āgantum: to come. |

TRANSLATION

"Knowing also accurately who the Chief of Army of those high-souled monkeys is, you have to come back quickly."

VERSE 9

इति प्रतिसमादिष्टौ राक्षसौ शुक सारणौ
हरि रूप धरौ वीरौ प्रविष्टौ वानरम् बलम्

iti pratisamādiṣṭau rākṣasau śuka sāraṇau
hari rūpa dharau vīrau praviṣṭau vānaram balam

SYNONYMS

pratipamādiṣṭau: having thus been commanded | vīrau: the valiant | rākṣasau: demons | śukasāraṇau: Shuka and Sarana | harirūpadhārau: both possessing the form of monkeys | praviṣṭau: entered | bala: (that) army | vānaram: of monkeys. |

TRANSLATION

Having thus been commanded by Ravana, the valiant demons Shuka and Sarana , both in the disguise of monkeys, entered that army of monkeys.

VERSE 10

ततस् तद् वानरम् सैन्यम् अचिन्त्यम् लोम हर्षणम्
सम्ख्यातुम् न अध्यगच्चेताम् तदा तौ शुक सारणौ

tatas tad vānaram sainyam acintyam loma harṣaṇam
samkhyātum na adhyagaccetām tadā tau śuka sāraṇau

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | tau: those | śuka sāraṇau: Shuka and Sarana | tadā: then | nādhyagacchetām: were not able | samkhyātum: to count | sainyam: the army | tat: of those | vānaram: monkeys | acintyam: which was inconceivable | lomaharṣaṇam: and causing their hair to stand erect. |

TRANSLATION

Shuka and Sarana were not able to count then that inconeviable army of monkeys, causing their hair to stand on end.

VERSE 11

तत् स्थितम् पर्वत अग्रेषु निर्दरेषु गुहासु च
समुद्रस्य च तीरेषु वनेषु उपवनेषु च

tat sthitam parvata agreṣu nirdareṣu guhāsu ca
samudrasya ca tīreṣu vaneṣu upavaneṣu ca

SYNONYMS

12| tat: that army | sthitam: was stationed | parvatāgreṣu: on the tops of mountains | nirjhareṣu: round about the water-falls | guhāsuca: in the caves | tīreṣu: on the shores | samudrasya: of the ocean | vaneṣu: in the woodlands | upavaneṣu: and in the gardens | taramāṇam: (It was either in) the process of crossing the ocen | tīrṇam ca: or had crossed it | tartukāmamca: or was intending to cross it | sarvaśaḥ: in its entirety | niviṣṭam: (It had either) encamped | niviśaccaiva: or was still encamping | bhīma nādam: making a terrible noise | niśācarau: the two demons | dadṛṣāte: saw | mahābalam: that very stong | akṣobhyam: and impeterbable | tadbalārṇavam: sea of army. |

TRANSLATION

That army was stationed on the tops of mountains, round about the waterfalls, in the caves, on the sea-shores, in the woodlands and in the gardens. It was either in the process of crossing the ocean, or was intending to cross it in its entirety. It had either encamped or was still encamping, making a terrible noise. The two demons saw that very strong and imperturbable sea of army.

VERSE 13

तौ ददर्श महातेजाः प्रच्चन्नौ च विभीषणः

tau dadarśa mahātejāḥ praccannau ca vibhīṣaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | mahātejāḥ: with great splendour | dadarśau: beheld | tau: both of them | praticcannau: in disguise | saḥ: He | gṛhītva: laid hold of | śuka sāraṇau: Shuka and Sarana | ācacakṣe: and said | rāmāya: to Rama (as follows) |

TRANSLATION

Vibhishana with great splendour beheld both of them in disguise. He caught hold of Shuka and Sarana and told Rama as follows:

VERSE 14

तस्यैतौ राक्षसेन्द्रस्य मन्त्रिणौ शुक्सारणौ

tasyaitau rākṣasendrasya mantriṇau śuksāraṇau

SYNONYMS

parapuramjaya: O | etau: these | śukasāraṇau: Shuka and Sarana | mantriṇau: the two miisters | tasya rākṣasendrasya: of that Ravana | samanuprāptau: and came | cārau: as spies | laṇkāyāḥ: from Lanka. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Rama the conqueror of hostile citadels! These two demons are Shuka and Sarana, the ministers of Ravana and they came here as spies from Lanka."

VERSE 15

तौ दृष्ट्वा व्यथितौ रामम् निराशौ जीविते तदा

tau dṛṣṭvā vyathitau rāmam nirāśau jīvite tadā

SYNONYMS

tau: both of the them | dṛṣṭvā: having seen | vāmam: Rama | vyathitau: were trembled | tathā: and | nirāśau: were without hope | jīvite: for their lives | bhītau: were frightened | cedam: and | ūcatu: spoke | idam: these | vacanam: words | kṛtāṅjalipuṭau: having joined their palms. |

TRANSLATION

Both of them, having seen Rama, were trembled with fear, without any hope for their lives and having joined their palms, spoke the following words:

VERSE 16

आवाम् इह आगतौ सौम्य रावण प्रहिताव् उभौ

āvām iha āgatau saumya rāvaṇa prahitāv ubhau

SYNONYMS

raghunandana: O | ṟama! ṣaumya: O | ekṣcellent man! āvām ubhau: we both | rāvaṇaprahitau: as sent by Ravana | āgatau: came | iha: here | parijñātum: to know | idam: this | tat: and that | sarvam: entire | balam: army. |

TRANSLATION

"O, excellent man! O, Rama! We both of us, as sent by Ravana, came here together to know everything about your entire army."

VERSE 17

तयोस् तद् वचनम् श्रुत्वा रामो दशरथ आत्मजः

tayos tad vacanam śrutvā rāmo daśaratha ātmajaḥ

SYNONYMS

rāmaḥ: Rama | daśarathātmajaḥ: the son of Dasaratha | rataḥ: who was interested | sarvabhūtahite: in the welfare of all being | śrutvā: after hearing | tat: those | vacanam: words | tayoḥ: of them both | prahasan: simingly | abravīt: spoke | vākyam: (the following) words. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing their aforesaid words, Rama the son of Dasaratha who was interested in the welfare of all beings, smilingly spoke the following words:

VERSE 18

यदि दृष्टम् बलम् कृत्स्नम् वयम् वा सुसमीक्षिताः

yadi dṛṣṭam balam kṛtsnam vayam vā susamīkṣitāḥ

SYNONYMS

sarvam: (Has) the entire | balam: army | dṛṣṭam: yadi = been seen? vayam susamiikSitaH vaa = have we been seen well? kaaryam kR^itam vaa = has the operation been accomplished | yathoktam: as instructed? pratigamyataam = you may go back | candataḥ: according to your own wish. |

TRANSLATION

"Has the entire army been observed by you? Have you observed us well? Have you accomplished the task, as entrusted to you? If so, you may go back now according to your free will."

VERSE 19

अथ किंचिददृष्टम् वा भूयस्तद्द्रष्टुमर्हथः

atha kiṃcidadṛṣṭam vā bhūyastaddraṣṭumarhathaḥ

SYNONYMS

atha: or | adṛṣṭam vā: even if you have not seen | kimcit: something | arhathaḥ: you ought | draṣṭum: to see | tat: that | bhūyaḥ: also | : otherwise | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | samdarṣayati: will show you | punaḥ: again | kārtsnyena: entirely. |

TRANSLATION

"Even if you have not seen something you may see it now also. Otherwise, Vibhishana will show it to you again entirely."

VERSE 20

न चेदम् ग्रहम् णम् प्रप्य भेतव्यम् जीवितम् प्रति

na cedam graham ṇam prapya bhetavyam jīvitam prati

SYNONYMS

prāpya: having obtained | idam: this | grahaṇam: seizure | nabhetavyam: you need not fear | jivitam prati: about your life | gṛhītau: the seized | ddutau: messengers | nyastaśastrau: without weapons | arhataḥ: deserve | na vadham: no killing. |

TRANSLATION

"You, having been caught, need not fear about your life. The captured messengers holding no weapons indeed deserve no killing."

VERSE 21

प्रच्चन्नौ च विमुञ्चएमौ चारौ रात्रिंच रावुभौ

praccannau ca vimuñcaemau cārau rātriṃca rāvubhau

SYNONYMS

vibhiṣaṇa: O | Vibhiśana! satatam: always | vikarṣaṇau: draw | śatrupakṣasya: on the opponents | vimuñca: set free | ubhau: the two | rātrimaharau: deomns | cārau: who are spies | praccanau: in disguise. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Vibhishana! Always try to draw a bow-string on the opponents and not on these two demons. Set them both, who are spies in disguise, free."

VERSE 22

प्रविश्य नगरीम् लंकाम् भवद्भ्याम् धनद अनुजः

praviśya nagarīm laṃkām bhavadbhyām dhanada anujaḥ

SYNONYMS

praviśya: after entering | laṅkām nagarīm: the city of Lanka | dhanadānujaḥ: Ravana the younger half-brother of Kubera the god of riches | rājā: and the king | rakṣasām: of demons | vaktavyaḥ: be told | bhavadbhyām: by you | yathoktam: as told | mama vacanam: in my words. |

TRANSLATION

"When you return to the city of Lanka, repeat my words faithfully to Ravana the younger half-brother of Kubera and the king of demons."

VERSE 23

यद् बलम् च समाश्रित्य सीताम् मे हृतवान् असि

yad balam ca samāśritya sītām me hṛtavān asi

SYNONYMS

yat: that | balam: force | samāśritya: on which you relied | hṛtavān asi: when you were taking away | sītām: Seetha | darśaya: display | yathākāmam: at your will | tat: that force | sasainyaiḥ: along with your troops | sahabāndhavaḥ: and with your allies. |

TRANSLATION

"That force on which you relied when you were taking away Seetha from me, display that force at your will along with your troops and allies."

VERSE 24

श्वः काले नगरीम् लंकाम् सप्राकाराम् सतोरणाम्

śvaḥ kāle nagarīm laṃkām saprākārām satoraṇām

SYNONYMS

śvaḥ: tomorrow | kālye: at break of day | paśya: you will see | laṅkā nagarīm: the city of Lanka | satoraṇām: and arches | balam: (as well as) the army | rakṣasām: of demons | vidhavamsitām: demolised | mayā: by me | śariaḥ: by my arrows. |

TRANSLATION

"Tomorrow, at break of day, you will see my arrows demolish the city of Lanka with its ramparts and arches as well as the army of demons."

VERSE 25

खोधम् भीममहम् मोक्ष्ये बलम् धारय रावण

khodham bhīmamaham mokṣye balam dhāraya rāvaṇa

SYNONYMS

rāvaṇa: O | ṟavana! śvaḥ: tomorrow | kālye: at break of day | aham: I | mokṣyāmi: shall cast | bhīmam: my terrific | krodham: andger | tvayi: on you | sasainye: with your army | vajram iva: as casting a thunderbolt | dānaveṣu: on demons | vāsavaḥ: Indra the Lord of Celestials | vajravān: wielding the thunder-bolt. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Ravana! Tomorrow, at break of day I will cast my dreadful anger on you and your army as Indra the Lord of celestials wielding a thunderbolt casts the thunderbolt on demons."

VERSE 26

इति प्रतिसमादिष्टौ राक्षसौ शुक सारणौ

iti pratisamādiṣṭau rākṣasau śuka sāraṇau

SYNONYMS

27| iti: thus | pratisamādiṣṭau: commanded | śuka sāraṇau: Shuka and Sarana | rākṣasau: the demons | pratinandya: admired | iti: that | jaya: "May you be Victorious!" enam = on this | rāghavam: Rama | dharmavatsalam: who was intent on righteousness | āgamya: reached | laṅkām nagarīm: the city of Lanka | abrūtām: and spoke | rākṣasādhipam: to Ravana. |

TRANSLATION

Receiving this command, the two demons, Shuka and Sarana, admiring his justice, cried out: "May you be victorious!", reached the city of Lanka and spoke to Ravana as follows:

VERSE 28

विभीषण गृहीतौ तु वध अर्हौ राक्षस ईश्वर
दृष्ट्वा धर्म आत्मना मुक्तौ रामेण अमित तेजसा

vibhīṣaṇa gṛhītau tu vadha arhau rākṣasa īśvara
dṛṣṭvā dharma ātmanā muktau rāmeṇa amita tejasā

SYNONYMS

rākṣaseśvara: O | king of demons! vibhiṣaṇagṛhītau: we were seized by Vibhishana | vadhārtham: with the intention of killing us | rāmeṇa: but by Rama | dharmātmanā: the pious minded | amita tejasā: whose valour is immeasureable | muktau: we were released | dṛṣṭvā: on seeing. |

TRANSLATION

"O, king of demons! We were seized by Vibhishana with the intention of killing us. But, Rama, the pious minded wose valour is immeasurable, seeing us, set us free."

VERSE 29

एक स्थान गता यत्र चत्वारः पुरुष ऋषभाः
लोक पाल उपमाः शूराः कृत अस्त्रा दृढ विक्रमाः

eka sthāna gatā yatra catvāraḥ puruṣa ṛṣabhāḥ
loka pāla upamāḥ śūrāḥ kṛta astrā dṛḍha vikramāḥ

SYNONYMS

31| yatra: where | catvāraḥ: the four | puruṣarṣabhāḥ: eminent persons | lokapālasamāḥ: who are equal to the protector of the worlds | śūrāḥ: the valiant ones | kṛtāstrāḥ: skilled in the use of weapons | dṛḍhavikramāḥ: and of proven prowess | rāmaḥ: Rama | dāśarathiḥ: son of Dasartha | śrīmān: the illustrious | lakṣmaṇaḥ: Lakshmana | mahātejaḥ: the great resplendent | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | sugrīvaśca: and Sugreeva | mahendra samavikramaḥ: whose valour is equal to that of Indra the Lord of celestials | ekasthānagatāḥ: are stationed at the same place | ete: they | utpāṭya: having plucked up | laṅkāmpurīm: the city of Lanka | saprākārām: with its ramparts | satoraṇām: and arches | śaktāḥ: are able | samkrāmayitum: to transplant it elswhere | sarve: (even if) all | vānarāḥ: (the) monkeys | tiṣṭhantu: keep aloof. |

TRANSLATION

"Where the four eminent persons who are equal to the protector of the worlds, the valiant ones skilled in the use of weapons and of proven prowess namely Rama the son of Dasaratha, the illustrious Lakshmana, the great resplendent Vibhishana and Sgreeva whose valour is equal to Indra the Lord of celestials, arestationed at the same place, they can pluck up the city of Lanka with its ramparts and arches and transplant it elswhere, even if all the monkeys keep aloof."

VERSE 32

यादृशम् तस्य रामस्य रूपम् प्रहरणानि च
वधिष्यति पुरीम् लंकाम् एकस् तिष्ठन्तु ते त्रयः

yādṛśam tasya rāmasya rūpam praharaṇāni ca
vadhiṣyati purīm laṃkām ekas tiṣṭhantu te trayaḥ

SYNONYMS

tat: such | rāmasya: is Rama's | rūpam: from | yādṛṣam: and such | praharaṇānica: are his weapons | ekaḥ: that he can alone | vadhiṣyati: overthrow | laṅkāmpurim: the city of Lanka | te trayaḥ: his three companions | tiṣṭhantu: standing by. |

TRANSLATION

"Such is Rama's form and such are his weapons, that he can alone overthrow the city of Lanka, his three other companious standing by."

VERSE 33

राम लक्ष्मण गुप्ता सा सुग्रीवेण च वाहिनी
बभूव दुर्धर्षतरा सर्वैर् अपि सुर असुरैः

rāma lakṣmaṇa guptā sā sugrīveṇa ca vāhinī
babhūva durdharṣatarā sarvair api sura asuraiḥ

SYNONYMS

sā vāhinī: that army | rāmalakṣmaṇaguptā: protected by Rama and Lakshmana | sugrīveṇaca: as well as by sugreeva | babhūva: are | durdharṣatarā: exceedingly unconquerable | sarvaiḥ: by all | surāsuraiḥ api: the gods and demons even. |

TRANSLATION

"That army protected by Rama and Lakshmana as well as Sugreeva, are exceedingly unconquerable even by all the gods and demons."

VERSE 34

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे पञ्चविंशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe pañcaviṃśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

samprati: now | dhvajinī: the army | vanaukasām: of the monkeys | mahātmanām: the minghty ones | iccatām: who are inclined | yoddhum: to fight | prahṛṣṭayodhāḥ: has cheerful warriors | alaim: enough | virodhena: of hte enmity | śamaḥ: (Let) peace | vidhīyatām: be made | pradīyatām: restore | maithilī: Seetha | dāśarathāya: to Rama. |

TRANSLATION

"Now, the army of the mighty monkeys, who are readily inclined to fight, consists of cheerful warriors. Mae peace, insted of enmity with them. Restore Seetha to Rama."
