Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

ततः सागरवेलायाम् दर्भानास्तीर्य राघवः
अञ्जलिम् प्राङ्मुखः कृत्वा प्रतिशिश्ये महोदधेः

tataḥ sāgaravelāyām darbhānāstīrya rāghavaḥ
añjalim prāṅmukhaḥ kṛtvā pratiśiśye mahodadheḥ

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | rāghavaḥ: Rama | arisūdanaḥ: the annihilator of enemies | āstīrya: spreading | darbhān: sacred grass | sāgara velāyām: on the sea shore | kṛtvā: making | aṅjalim: a respectful salutation(by joining his palms) | mahodadhe: to the great ocean | prāṅmukhaḥ: having his face turned east ward | pratiśiśye: lied down | bāhum: with his arm | bhujaṅgabhogābham: resembling of the body of the snake | upadhāya: as his pillow. |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter Rama, the annihilator of enemies, spreading sacred grass on the sea shore, making a respectful salutation (by joining his palms) to the great ocean with his face turned eastward, lied down with his arm, resembling the body of a snake , as his pillow.

VERSE 2

मणिकाञ्चनकेयूरमुक्ताप्रवरभूषणैः

maṇikāñcanakeyūramuktāpravarabhūṣaṇaiḥ

SYNONYMS

maṇikāṅcana keyūra muktā pravara bhūṣaṇaiḥ: adorned with armlets of gems and gold and the most excellent jewels of pearls | abhimṛṣṭam: touched | anekadhā: more than once | parama nārīṇām: by excellent women (by Kausalya and other mothers or by royal maids.) |

TRANSLATION

His arm formerly adorned with armlets of gems and gold and the most excellent jewels of pearls, was touched more than once, by excellent women ( Kausalya and other mothers or by royal maids).

VERSE 4

चन्दनागुरुभिश्चैव पुरस्तादभिसेवितम्

candanāgurubhiścaiva purastādabhisevitam

SYNONYMS

purastāt: formerly | (his arm) abhisevitam: was tended | candanāgurubhiścaiva: with sandal wood and also | candanaiḥ: as with saffron pastes | upaśobhitam: made beautiful | bālasūryaprakāśaiḥ: resembling the splendor of a rising sun. |

TRANSLATION

Formerly, his arm used to be tended with sandalwood and aloe and with saffron pastes and made beautiful like the splendor of a rising sun.

VERSE 5

शयने चोत्तमाङ्गेन सीतायाः शोभितम् पुरा

śayane cottamāṅgena sītāyāḥ śobhitam purā

SYNONYMS

purā: in the past (the aforesaid arm) | śobhitam: was graced | uttamāṅgena: by the head | sītāyāḥ: of Seetha | śayane: on the couch | takṣakasyeva sambhogam: like the body of Takshaka (A snake) | gaṅgājalaniṣevitam: supported on the water of the Ganga. |

TRANSLATION

In the past, the aforesaid arm was graced by the head of Seetha on the couch. It resembled the body of Takshaka. (A snake) supported on the water of the Ganga.

VERSE 6

सम्गे युगसम्काशम् शत्रूणाम् शोकवर्धनम्

सुह्र्^दाम् नन्दनम् दीर्घम् सागरान्तव्यपाश्रयम्

samge yugasamkāśam śatrūṇām śokavardhanam

SYNONYMS

dīrgham: was long | yuga samkāśam: resembling a yoke | śokavardhanam: augmented the grief | śatrūṇām: of his enemies | samyuge: in battle | nandanam: was delightful | suhṛdām: with his friends | sāgarānta vyapāśrayem: is placed at the shore of the sea. |

TRANSLATION

The aforesaid arm resembled a yoke. It enhanced the grief of his enemies in battle. It was delightful to his friends. It is now placed at the shore of the sea.

VERSE 7

अस्यता च पुनः सव्यम् ज्याघातविगतत्वचम्
दक्षिणो कक्षिणम् बहुम् महापरिघसम्निभम्

asyatā ca punaḥ savyam jyāghātavigatatvacam
dakṣiṇo kakṣiṇam bahum mahāparighasamnibham

SYNONYMS

jyāghātavigatatvacam: whose skin had been hardened by the strokes of the bow string | savyam: off the left | bāhum: arm | mahāparigha samnibham: resembling a great mace | mahat: and that mighty | dakṣiṇam: right | bhujam: arm | gosahasrapradātāram: that bestowed thousands of cows in charity | upādhāya: who used as a pillow | rāmaḥ: rama | dakṣiṇaḥ: the competent | mahābāhuḥ: and the mighty armed | iti: said thus | adya: today | me: to me | taraṇam vā: either crossing | sāgarasya: of the ocean | maraṇam vā: or a death(should occur) | kṝtvā: making | dhritam: that resolve | adhiśiśye: (he) | atra: there | mahādadhim: by the great ocean | sthitaḥ: eshtablished | muniḥ: in silence | prayataḥ: and piously disposed | vidhivat: according to tradition. |

TRANSLATION

The aforesaid arm whose skin had been hardened by the strokes of the bow string, off the left arm resembling a great mace and that mighty right arm that bestowed thousands of cows in charity was used as a pillow. Rama, the competent man and the mighty armed said: " Either crossing of the ocean or a death should occur to me today". Making that resolve he laid down by the ocean, restraining his speech and with a pious disposition according to tradition.

VERSE 10

तस्य रामस्य सुप्तस्य कुश आस्तीर्णे मही तले
नियमाद् अप्रमत्तस्य निशास् तिस्रो अतिचक्रमुः

tasya rāmasya suptasya kuśa āstīrṇe mahī tale
niyamād apramattasya niśās tisro aticakramuḥ

SYNONYMS

niyamāt: following the scriptural injunction | tasya: that | rāmasya: Rama | apramattasya: who was attentive | suptasya: while sleeping | mahītale: on the ground | kuśāstīrṇe: spread with Kusha grass | aticakramuḥ: surpassed a time | tisraḥ: of three | niśāḥ: nights. |

TRANSLATION

Following the scriptural injunction, that Rama who was devoted to his sacred vow, while sleeping on the ground spread with Kusha grass, spent a time of three nights there.

VERSE 11

स त्रिरात्रोषितस्तत्र नयज्ञो धर्मवत्सलः
उपासत तदा रामः सागरम् सरिताम् पतिम्

sa trirātroṣitastatra nayajño dharmavatsalaḥ
upāsata tadā rāmaḥ sāgaram saritām patim

SYNONYMS

tadā: then | rāmaḥ: Rama | nayajṅaḥ: who was skilled in policy | dharmavatsalaḥ: and fond of piety | trirātroṣitaḥ: remaining for three nights | tatra: there | upāsata: waiting upon | sāgaram: the ocean | sritām patim: the Lord of rivers. |

TRANSLATION

Remaining there for three nights, Rama who was skilled in policy and fond of piety, waited upon the ocean, the lord of rivers.

VERSE 12

न च दर्शयते मन्दस् तदा रामस्य सागरः
प्रयतेन अपि रामेण यथा अर्हम् अभिपूजितः

na ca darśayate mandas tadā rāmasya sāgaraḥ
prayatena api rāmeṇa yathā arham abhipūjitaḥ

SYNONYMS

abhipūjitaḥ api: though honored | rāmeṇa: by Rama | prayatena: the self subdued | yathārham: according to his worth | manda: the care less | sāgaraḥ: ocean | nacadarśayate: did not show | rūpam: his personal form | rāmasya: to Rama. |

TRANSLATION

Though honored according to his worth by the self subdued Rama, the careless ocean did not appear in his personal form to Rama.

VERSE 13

समुद्रस्य ततः क्रुद्धो रामो रक्त अन्त लोचनः
समीपस्थम् उवाच इदम् लक्ष्मणम् शुभ लक्ष्मणम्

samudrasya tataḥ kruddho rāmo rakta anta locanaḥ
samīpastham uvāca idam lakṣmaṇam śubha lakṣmaṇam

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: thereafter | rāmaḥ: Rama | kruddhaḥ: becoming angry | raktānta locanaḥ: with the outer corners of his eyes turned red | samudrasya: with the ocean | uvāca: spoke | idam: these words | lakṣmaṇasya: to Lakshmana | śubhalakṣaṇam: having auspicious marks | samīpastham: who was in his vicinity. |

TRANSLATION

Rama becoming angry with the ocean, having the outer corners of his eyes turned red, spoke those words to Lakshmana, having auspicious marks, who was in his vicinity:

VERSE 14

अवलेपम् समुद्रस्य न दर्शयति यत् स्वयम्
प्रशमः च क्षमा चैव आर्जवम् प्रिय वादिता

avalepam samudrasya na darśayati yat svayam
praśamaḥ ca kṣamā caiva ārjavam priya vāditā

SYNONYMS

avalepaḥ: O | samudrasya: of the ocean | yaḥ: who | na darśayati: does not appear | svayam: himself | praśamścaiva: Indeed calmness | kṣamācaiva: and forbearance | ārjavam: straight forwardness | priyavādita: and kind-spoken ness | ete: these | guṇaḥ: qualities | satām: of gentlemen | asāmarthyaphalāḥ: give weak results | nirguṇeṣu: when directed towards those having no virtues. |

TRANSLATION

"O, what arrogance of the ocean, who does not appear himself personally before me! Indeed calmness, forbearance kind spoken ness and straight -forwardness- these qualities of noble men give weak results, when directed towards those having no virtues."

VERSE 15

आत्म प्रशंसिनम् दुष्टम् धृष्टम् विपरिधावकम्

ātma praśaṃsinam duṣṭam dhṛṣṭam viparidhāvakam

SYNONYMS

lokaḥ: this world | satkurute: honors | naram: that man | ātma praśansinam: who boasts himself | duṣṭam: and shameless | vipradhāvinam: runs bout | sarvatra: in all directions | utsṛṣṭa daṅḍam ca: like a horse set at liberty. |

TRANSLATION

"This world honors that man, who boasts himself, is corrupt and shameless, runs about in all directions advertising himself and commits every kind of excess"

VERSE 16

न साम्ना शक्यते कीर्तिर् न साम्ना शक्यते यशः

na sāmnā śakyate kīrtir na sāmnā śakyate yaśaḥ

SYNONYMS

lakṣmaṇa: O | ḻakśmana! āsmin loke: in this world | na śakyate: it is not possible | prāptum: to obtain | kīrtiḥ: fame | na: nay | yaśaḥ: glory | na jayovā: nay victory | raṇamūrdhani: at the end of battle | sāmnā: by conciliation. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Lakshmana! In this world, it is not possible to obtain fame, glory or victory at the end of a battle, by conciliation"

VERSE 17

अद्य मद् बाण निर्भिन्नैर् मकरैर् मकर आलयम्
निरुद्ध तोयम् सौमित्रे प्लवद्भिः पश्य सर्वतः

adya mad bāṇa nirbhinnair makarair makara ālayam
niruddha toyam saumitre plavadbhiḥ paśya sarvataḥ

SYNONYMS

soumitra: O | ḻakśmana! Paśya: see | adya: now | makarālayam: this ocean | niruddhatoyam: having its water suffocated | makaraiḥ: with its crocodiles | plavadhiḥ: floated | sarvataḥ: on all sides | madbāṇanirbhagnaiḥ: and broken asunder by my arrows. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Lakshmana! Behold now this ocean, having its water made suffocated soon with its crocodiles floated on all sides and broken asunder by my arrows".

VERSE 18

भोगाम्ः च पश्य नागानाम् मया भिन्नानि लक्ष्मण

bhogāmḥ ca paśya nāgānām mayā bhinnāni lakṣmaṇa

SYNONYMS

lakṣmaṇe: O | ḻakśmana! Paśya: see | iha: here | bhogāni: the coils | bhoginām: of water snakes | mahābhogāni: the huge bodies | matsyānām: of alligators | karām: and the trunks | kariṇām: of sea elephants | bhinnāmi: being | mayā: by me. |

TRANSLATION

"See here, O, Lakshmana, the coils of water snakes, the huge bodies of alligators and the trunks of sea elephants being shattered by me."

VERSE 19

सशन्ख शुक्तिका जालम् समीन मकरम् शरैः

saśankha śuktikā jālam samīna makaram śaraiḥ

SYNONYMS

samudram pariśoṣayi: I will make the ocean dry up | saśaṅkha śuktikājālam: with its multitude of conches | tathā: and | sa mīnamakaram: with its fishes and crocodiles | adya: now | mahatā yuddhena: by this great battle. |

TRANSLATION

"I will make the ocean with its multitude of conches, oyster shells, fishes and crocodiles, dry up now in this great battle"

VERSE 20

क्षमया हि समायुक्तम् माम् अयम् मकर आलयः

kṣamayā hi samāyuktam mām ayam makara ālayaḥ

SYNONYMS

ayam: this | makarātayaḥ: ocean | vijānāti: considering | mām: me | asamartham: as an incapable man | samāyuktam: endowed as I am | kṣamayā: with forbearance | dhik: out with | kṣamām: forbearance | īdṛśe: to such | jane: an individual. |

TRANSLATION

"This ocean is considering me as an incapable man endowed as I am with forbearance. It is a great mistake to show forbearance to such an individual."

VERSE 21

स दर्शयति साम्ना मे सागरो रूपमात्मनः

sa darśayati sāmnā me sāgaro rūpamātmanaḥ

SYNONYMS

22| sāgaraḥ: the ocean | nadarśayati: is not appearing | ātmānam: himself | me: to me | sāmnā: on kind words | soumitre: O | ḻakśmana1 ānaya: bring | cāpam: the bow | āśīviṣopamām: and the serpentine | śarāmśca: arrows | śoṣayiṣyāmi samudram: I shall dry up this ocean | plavaṅgamāḥ: monkeys | yāntu: can go | padbhyām: by foot. |

TRANSLATION

"The Ocean is not appearing himself before me on kind words. O, Lakshmana! Bring the bow and the serpentine arrows. I shall dry up this ocean, so that our monkeys can cross it by feet."

VERSE 23

अद्य अक्षोभ्यम् अपि क्रुद्धः क्षोभयिष्यामि सागरम्
वेलासु कृत मर्यादम् सहसा ऊर्मि समाकुलम्

adya akṣobhyam api kruddhaḥ kṣobhayiṣyāmi sāgaram
velāsu kṛta maryādam sahasā ūrmi samākulam

SYNONYMS

24| adya: now | kruddhaḥ: being provoked | kṣobhayiṣyāmi: I will shake | akṣobhyamapi: even if unshakable | sāgaram: this ocean | kariṣyāmi: I will force | varuṇālayami: the ocean | kṟita maryādam: made with a boundary | velāsu: with banks | sahasrormi samākulam: and agitated with thousands of waves | nirmaryādam: bereft of a boundary | sāyakaiḥ: by my arrows | kṣobhayiśye: I will agitate | mahārṇavam: the great ocean | mahā dānava samkulam: through with great demons. |

TRANSLATION

"Being provoked now, I will shake this ocean, even if it is unshakable. I will force the ocean, which is demarcated by banks and agitated with thousands of waves, bereft of a boundary, by my arrows. I will agitate the great ocean, thronged with great demons."

VERSE 25

एवम् उक्त्वा धनुष् पाणिः क्रोध विस्फारित ईक्षणः
बभूव रामो दुर्धर्षो युग अन्त अग्निर् इव ज्वलन्

evam uktvā dhanuṣ pāṇiḥ krodha visphārita īkṣaṇaḥ
babhūva rāmo durdharṣo yuga anta agnir iva jvalan

SYNONYMS

uktvā: speaking | evam: thus | rāmaḥ: Rama | krodhavisphāritekṣaṇaḥ: = with his eyes made larger by anger | dhanūṣpāṇiḥ: and wielding a bow with his hand | babhūva: became | durdharṣaḥ: dreadful | jvalan yugāntāriva: like a blazing fire at the end of the world. |

TRANSLATION

Speaking as aforesaid, Rama with his eyes made larger by anger and wielding a bow with his hand, became dreadful to look at, as a blazing fire at the end of the world.

VERSE 26

सम्पीड्य च धनुर् घोरम् कम्पयित्वा शरैर् जगत्
मुमोच विशिखान् उग्रान् वज्राणि इव शत क्रतुः

sampīḍya ca dhanur ghoram kampayitvā śarair jagat
mumoca viśikhān ugrān vajrāṇi iva śata kratuḥ

SYNONYMS

sampīḍyaca: swaying | ghoram: terrific | dhanuḥ: bow | jagat kampayitvā: and making the earth tremble | śaraiḥ: by his violence | (he) mumoca: released | viśikhān: the arrows | ugran vajrāmiva: like powerful thunderbolt | śatakratuḥ: of Indra(god of celestials). |

TRANSLATION

Swaying his terrific bow and making the earth tremble by his violence Rama released the arrow resembling a powerful thunderbolt of Indra. (god of celestials).

VERSE 27

ते ज्वलन्तो महावेगास् तेजसा सायक उत्तमाः
प्रविशन्ति समुद्रस्य सलिलम् त्रस्त पन्नगम्

te jvalanto mahāvegās tejasā sāyaka uttamāḥ
praviśanti samudrasya salilam trasta pannagam

SYNONYMS

te: those | sāyakottamāḥ: excellent arrows | mahāvegāḥ: having a great speed | jvalantaḥ: and ablaze | tejasā: by their splendor | praviṣyanti: entered | jalam: the waters | samudrasya: of the ocean | vitrasta pannagam: frightening the water-snakes. |

TRANSLATION

Those excellent arrows having a great speed and ablaze by their splendor, penetrated the waters of the ocean, striking the water- snakes with terror.

VERSE 28

ततो वेगः समुद्रस्य सनक्र मकरो महान्
स बभूव महाघोरः समारुत रवस् तदा

tato vegaḥ samudrasya sanakra makaro mahān
sa babhūva mahāghoraḥ samāruta ravas tadā

SYNONYMS

saḥ: that | mahān: great | toyavegaḥ: jerk of water | samina makaraḥ: along with fishes and alligators | samudrasya: of the ocean | tathā: and | sa mārutaravaḥ: together with the resonance of the wind | babhūva: became | mahāghoraḥ: very much dreadful. |

TRANSLATION

The great jerk of water with fishes and alligators of the ocean, together with the resonance of the wind became very much dreadful.

VERSE 29

महाऊर्मि माला विततः शन्ख शुक्ति समाकुलः
सधूम परिवृत्त ऊर्मिः सहसा अभून् महाउदधिः

mahāūrmi mālā vitataḥ śankha śukti samākulaḥ
sadhūma parivṛtta ūrmiḥ sahasā abhūn mahāudadhiḥ

SYNONYMS

sahasā: immediately | mahodadhiḥ: that great ocean | āsīt: became | mahormi jālacalitaḥ: shaken by a multitude of huge waves | śaṅkhajāla samāvṛtaḥ: enveloped by a multitude of couches | parivṛttormiḥ: in the rolling waves | sa dhūmaḥ: along with smoke. |

TRANSLATION

Immediately that great ocean, became shaken by the cluster of huge waves enveloped by a multitude of conches in its rolling waves and a smoke came out.

VERSE 30

व्यथिताः पन्नगाः च आसन् दीप्त आस्या दीप्त लोचनाः
दानवाः च महावीर्याः पाताल तल वासिनः

vyathitāḥ pannagāḥ ca āsan dīpta āsyā dīpta locanāḥ
dānavāḥ ca mahāvīryāḥ pātāla tala vāsinaḥ

SYNONYMS

pannagāḥ: sea snakes | dīptāsyāḥ: having brilliant faces | dīpta locanāḥ: and glittering eyes | mahāvīrya dānavāśca: and greatly valiant demons | pātālatalavāsinaḥ: residing in nethermost subterranean region | āsan: became | vyathitāḥ: perturbed. |

TRANSLATION

Sea-snakes having brilliant faces and glittering eyes and the very valiant demons residing in nethermost subterranean region of the sea, were perturbed.

VERSE 31

ऊर्मयः सिन्धु राजस्य सनक्र मकरास् तदा
विन्ध्य मन्दर सम्काशाः समुत्पेतुः सहस्रशः

ūrmayaḥ sindhu rājasya sanakra makarās tadā
vindhya mandara samkāśāḥ samutpetuḥ sahasraśaḥ

SYNONYMS

tathā: and | ūrmayaḥ: waves | sahasraśaḥ: in thousands (so large) | vindhyamandarasamkāśāḥ: resembling Vindhya and Mandhara mountains | samutpeduḥ: jumped up | sindhurājasya: from the sea | sanakra makarāḥ: with its crocodiles and sea monsters. |

TRANSLATION

Thousands of waves, so large resembling Vindhya and Mandhara mountains, jumped up from the sea with its crocodiles and sea monsters.

VERSE 32

आघूर्णित तरन्ग ओघः सम्ब्भ्रान्त उरग राक्षसः
उद्वर्तित महाग्राहः सम्वृत्तः सलिल आशयः

āghūrṇita taranga oghaḥ sambbhrānta uraga rākṣasaḥ
udvartita mahāgrāhaḥ samvṛttaḥ salila āśayaḥ

SYNONYMS

varuṇālayaḥ: the ocean | āghūrṇita taran^goughaḥ: with its multitude of fluctuating waves | sambhrāntoraga rākṣasaḥ: with its frightened serpents and demons | udvartita mahāgrāhaḥ: with huge crocodiles caused to come out | sagoṣaḥ: became full of noise. |

TRANSLATION

That ocean with its multitude of fluctuating waves, with its frightened serpents and demons, with huge crocodiles coming out, became full of noise.

VERSE 33

ततस्तु तम् राघव मुग्रवेगम्
प्रकर्षमाणम् ध्मरप्रमेयम्
सौमित्रिरुत्पत्य विनिःश्वसन्तम्
मामेति चोक्त्वा धनुराललम्बे

tatastu tam rāghava mugravegam
prakarṣamāṇam dhmaraprameyam
saumitrirutpatya viniḥśvasantam
māmeti coktvā dhanurālalambe

SYNONYMS

tataḥ: then | soumitriḥ: Lakshmana | utpatya: rushed | rāghavam: towards Rama | ugravegam: in a terrific velocity | prakarṣamāṇam: was stretching | aprameyam: his incomparable | dhanuḥ: the bow. | viniḥ śvasantam: with a penetrating sigh | uktvā: crying | mā mā iti: no farther | ālalambe: and took hold of |

TRANSLATION

Then Lakshmana rushed towards Rama who in a terrific velocity was stretching his incomparable bow, with a penetrating sigh, crying: "No further, no farther" and took hold of the bow.

VERSE 34

एतद्विनापि ह्युदधेस्तवार्य
सम्पत्स्यते वीरतमस्य कार्यम्
भवद्विधाः क्रोधवशम् न यान्ति
दीर्घम् भवान्पश्यतु साधुवृत्तम्

etadvināpi hyudadhestavārya
sampatsyate vīratamasya kāryam
bhavadvidhāḥ krodhavaśam na yānti
dīrgham bhavānpaśyatu sādhuvṛttam

SYNONYMS

etat vināpi: even without this destruction | udadheḥ: of the ocean | kāryam: the purpose | adya: now | tava: of you | vīratamasya: the greatest hero | sampatsyate: will be fulfilled | bhavadvidhāḥ: men like you | na yānti: do not get | krodhavaśam: the power of anger | bhavān: some durable | sādhu vṛttam: and noble way | ārya: O |

TRANSLATION

"O, honorable man! Even without the destruction of the ocean, the purpose of you the greatest hero will be fulfilled. Men like you do not fall into the sway of anger. You see some durable and noble alternative"

VERSE 35

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे एकविंशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe ekaviṃśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

brahmarṣibhiścaiva: by brahamana sages | surarṣibhiśca: and by celestial sages | antarhitaiḥ: abiding in the interior | antarikṣe: of the sky | uktvā: was cried | mahatā: in a loud | svareṇa: voice | śabdaḥ: and noise | kṛtaḥ: made | mā mā iti: saying No farther | kaṣṭamiti: ah |

TRANSLATION

Brahmana-sages and celestial sages, stationed in the interior of the sky cried in a loud voices, saying "No farther, no farther" and making a noise "Ah,Oh,Alas!"
