Yuddha Kanda - Book Of War

VERSE 1

अथ रामः प्रसन्न आत्मा श्रुत्वा वायु सुतस्य ह
प्रत्यभाषत दुर्धर्षः श्रुतवान् आत्मनि स्थितम्

atha rāmaḥ prasanna ātmā śrutvā vāyu sutasya ha
pratyabhāṣata durdharṣaḥ śrutavān ātmani sthitam

SYNONYMS

atha: thereafter | rāmaḥ: Rama | durdharṣaḥ: the inviolable | śrutavān: and the one having sacred knowledge | śrutvā: after hearing | vāyusutasya: Hanuman's words | pratyabhāṣata: spoke | prasannātmā: with a clear understanding | sthitam: that which was established | ātmani: in his mind. |

TRANSLATION

Thereafter the inviolable Rama who possesses sacred knowledge, after hearing Hanuman's words, spoke with a clear understanding, the following opinion that was firm in his mind:

VERSE 2

मम अपि तु विवक्षा अस्ति काचित् प्रति विभीषणम्
श्रुतम् इच्चामि तत् सर्वम् भवद्भिः श्रेयसि स्थितैः

mama api tu vivakṣā asti kācit prati vibhīṣaṇam
śrutam iccāmi tat sarvam bhavadbhiḥ śreyasi sthitaiḥ

SYNONYMS

mamāpi: I also | asti: have | kācit: a | vivakṣā: desire to tell | vibhīṣaṇam prati: about Vibhishana | icchāmi: I want | tat: it | sarvam: all | śrotum: to be heard | bhavadbhih: by you | sthitaih: who stand firmly | śreyapi: in our welfare. |

TRANSLATION

"I also wish to tell my opinion about Vibhishana. I want it to be heard by you, who are firmly established in our welfare."

VERSE 3

मित्र भावेन सम्प्राप्तम् न त्यजेयम् कथंचन
दोषो यदि अपि तस्य स्यात् सताम् एतद् अगर्हितम्

mitra bhāvena samprāptam na tyajeyam kathaṃcana
doṣo yadi api tasya syāt satām etad agarhitam

SYNONYMS

kathamcana: by any means | nātyajeyam: I donot leave | tasya: him | samprāptam: who comes | mitrabhāvena: with a friendly appearance | syāt yadyapi: even though he has | doṣah: a defect | etat: This | agarhitam: is irreproachable | satām: by good men. |

TRANSLATION

"By any means, I do not desert anyone who arrives with a friendly appearance, even if he has a defect. His acceptance is irreproachable in the eyes of good men"

VERSE 4

सुग्रीवस्त्वथ तद्वाक्यमाभाष्य च विमृश्य च
ततः शुभतरम् वाक्यमुवाच हरिपुङ्गवः

sugrīvastvatha tadvākyamābhāṣya ca vimṛśya ca
tataḥ śubhataram vākyamuvāca haripuṅgavaḥ

SYNONYMS

atha: then | ṣugrīvaḥ: Sugreeva | haripuṇgavaḥ: the chief of monkeys | ābhāṣyaca: closely analysed | vimṛśyaca: and examined | tadvākyam: those words of Rama | tatah: and thereafter | uvācaha: spoke | śubhataram: most auspicious | vākyam: words: |

TRANSLATION

Then, Sugreeva the chief of monkeys closely analyzed and examined the aforesaid words of Rama and thereafter spoke the following most auspicious words:

VERSE 5

सुदुष्टो वाप्यदुष्टो वा किम्मेष रजनीचरः
ईदृशम् व्यसनम् प्राप्तम् भ्रातरम् यः परित्यजेत्

suduṣṭo vāpyaduṣṭo vā kimmeṣa rajanīcaraḥ
īdṛśam vyasanam prāptam bhrātaram yaḥ parityajet

SYNONYMS

kim: what matters if | eṣaḥ: this | rajanīcaraḥ: ranger of night | (demon) suduṣṭovā: is very dangerous | yaḥ: he who | parityajet: can desert | bhrātaram: his brother | prāptam: who get | īdṛśam: such | vyasanam: a calamity | tasya: for such a person | yam: who to | konāma: whom | saḥ: he | naparityajet: would not betray? |

TRANSLATION

"What matters if this ranger of night is very dangerous or other wise, if he can desert his own brother at a time of peril? Whom will he not betray subsequently?"

VERSE 6

वानराधिपते र्वाक्यम् श्रुत्वा सर्वानुदीक्स्य तु

vānarādhipate rvākyam śrutvā sarvānudīksya tu

SYNONYMS

7| śrutvā: hearing | vākyam: these words | vānarādhipate: of Sugreeva | kakutthsaḥ: Rama | satyaparākramaḥ: who was truly mighty | udīkṣyatu: looked round | sarvam: all of them | utsmyamānaḥ: smiled | īṣat: a little | uvācaha: and spoke | iti: thus | lakṣmaṇam: to Lakshmana | puṇya lakṣaṇam: of virtuous characteristics: |

TRANSLATION

Hearing the words of Sugreeva, Rama who was truly mighty looked round all of them , smiled a little and spoke the following words to Lakshmana, of virtuous characteristics:

VERSE 8

अनधीत्य च शास्त्राणि वृद्धाननुपसेव्य च
न शक्यमीदृशम् वक्तुम् यदुवाच हरीश्वरः

anadhītya ca śāstrāṇi vṛddhānanupasevya ca
na śakyamīdṛśam vaktum yaduvāca harīśvaraḥ

SYNONYMS

yat: which words | harīśvaraḥ: Sugreeva | uvācaḥ: spoke | na śakyam: it is not possible | vaktum: to speak | īdṛśam: such words | anadhītya: without studying | śāstrāṇi: scriptures | anupasevyaca: and without serving | vṛddhān: elders. |

TRANSLATION

"Without studying scriptures and without serving elders, it is not possible to speak such words as Sugreeva spoke."

VERSE 9

अस्ति सूक्ष्मतरम् किंचिद्यदत्र प्रतिभाति मा
प्रत्यक्षम् लौकिकम् चापि वर्तते सर्वराजसु

asti sūkṣmataram kiṃcidyadatra pratibhāti mā
pratyakṣam laukikam cāpi vartate sarvarājasu

SYNONYMS

yat: which | vartate: is | pratyakṣam: clearly to be seen | sarva rājasu: in all the kings | loukikamcāpi: and occurring in even ordinary life | kimcit: a somewhat | sūkṣmataram: highly subtle thing | asti: is there | atra: Here | : to me | pratibhāti: it is appearing to the mind. |

TRANSLATION

"It appears to my mind that there is however something peculiar in these circumstances which are clearly to be seen in all lives of kings and even occurring in ordinary life."

VERSE 10

अमित्रास्तत्कुलीनाश्च प्रातिदेश्याश्च कीर्तिता
व्यसनेषु प्रहर्तारस्तस्मादयमिहागतः

amitrāstatkulīnāśca prātideśyāśca kīrtitā
vyasaneṣu prahartārastasmādayamihāgataḥ

SYNONYMS

kīrtitāḥ: it is told | tatkulīnāśca: that persons of that family | prātideśyāścca: and rulers belonging to adjoining territory | amitrāḥ: are enemies | prahartārah: and strike | vyasaneṣu: in adversities | tasmāt: for that reason | ayam: he | āgatam: came | iha: here. |

TRANSLATION

"It is told that persons of the same family and rulers belonging to adjoining territories become enemies and strike in times of adversities. For this reason, he came here."

VERSE 11

अपापास्तत्कुलीवाश्च मानयन्ति स्वकान् हितान्
एष प्रायो नरेन्द्राणाम् शङ्कनीयस्तु शोभनः

apāpāstatkulīvāśca mānayanti svakān hitān
eṣa prāyo narendrāṇām śaṅkanīyastu śobhanaḥ

SYNONYMS

tatkulīnāḥ: persons belonging to the same family | apāpāḥ: who are not sinful | mānayanti: respect | svakān: their own | hitān: well- wishers | prāyaḥ: Generally | narendrāṇām: for kings | eṣaḥ: even the persons | śobhanaḥ: who are virtuous | śaṇkanīyaḥ: are to be apprehended. |

TRANSLATION

"Even if belonging to the same family, persons who are virtuous do respect their own well wishers in that family. Generally among kings, even a virtuous person is apprehended."

VERSE 12

यस्तु दोषस्त्वया प्रोक्तो ह्यादाने^^रिबलस्य च
तत्र ते कीर्तयुष्यामि यथाशास्त्रमिदम् शृणु

yastu doṣastvayā prokto hyādāne^^ribalasya ca
tatra te kīrtayuṣyāmi yathāśāstramidam śṛṇu

SYNONYMS

yathāsāstran: as per scriptures | kīrtayiṣyāmi: I will tell | te: you | śruṇu: hear | idam: this | yaḥ: which | daṣaḥ: draw back | proktaḥ: is told | tvayā: by you | tatra: in that matter | ādāne: of accepting | aribalasya: from the side of an adversary. |

TRANSLATION

"With regard to the draw back you told me in the matter of accepting a person coming from the side of an adversary, hear from me what the scriptures say."

VERSE 13

न वयम् तत्कुलीनाश्च राज्यकाम्क्षी च राक्षसः
पण्डिता हि भविष्यन्ति तस्माद्ग्राह्यो विभीषणः

na vayam tatkulīnāśca rājyakāmkṣī ca rākṣasaḥ
paṇḍitā hi bhaviṣyanti tasmādgrāhyo vibhīṣaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

vayam: we | na: do not | tatkulīnāḥca: belong to the same family. raakshhasaH = The demon | rājya kāṇkṣīca: is desirous of kingdom | (ṭhese demons also)bhaviṣyanti: may be | paṇḍitāḥ hi: rather learned | tasmāt: for that reason | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | grāhyaḥ: is admissible. |

TRANSLATION

"We do not belong to the same family. Further, Vibhishana the demon is desirous of acquiring the kingdom. A few of the demons also may be rather learned ones. That is why, Vibhishana is acceptable."

VERSE 14

अव्यग्राश्च प्रहृष्टाश्च न भविष्यन्ति सम्गताः
प्रणादश्च महानेष ततो।अस्य भयमागतम्

avyagrāśca prahṛṣṭāśca na bhaviṣyanti samgatāḥ
praṇādaśca mahāneṣa tato|asya bhayamāgatam

SYNONYMS

sangatāḥ: kinsfolk | na bhaviṣyanti: do not live together | avyagrāśca: in a fearless mode | prahṛṣṭāśca: and in a delightful manner | iti: hence | gamiṣyanti: they get | bhedam: a split | ataḥ: for that reason | bhayam: a fear | āgatam: has come | asya: to him | eṣaḥ: This | praṇādaśca: loud appeal is also | mahān: leading | tasmāt: for that reason | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | grāhyaḥ: is acceptable. |

TRANSLATION

"Kinsfolk do not live together in a fearless mode and in a delightful manner. Hence, they get a split among themselves. For this reason, a fear has come to him. This loud appeal is also major cause. That is why, Vibhishana can be accepted."

VERSE 15

न सर्वे भ्रातरस्तात भवन्ति भरतोपमाः

na sarve bhrātarastāta bhavanti bharatopamāḥ

SYNONYMS

tāta: my dear one! sarve = All | bhrātaraḥ: brothers | na bhavanti: are not | bharatopamāḥ: like bharata | putraḥ: sons | madvidhāḥ: like me | pituḥ: to a father | suhṛdo vā: or friends | bhavadvidhāḥ: like you. |

TRANSLATION

"My dear one! Neither all brothers are like Bharata, nor all sons of a father like me nor all friends are like you."

VERSE 16

एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण सुग्रीवः सहलक्स्मणः

evamuktastu rāmeṇa sugrīvaḥ sahalaksmaṇaḥ

SYNONYMS

evam: thus | uktaḥ: spoken | rāmeṇa: by Rama | sugrīvaḥ: Sugreeva | saha lakśmaṇaḥ: who was together with Lakshmana | mahāpraġ^yaḥ: the highly wise man | utthāya: stood up | praṇataḥ: saluting | abravīt: and spoke | idam: these | vākyam: words: |

TRANSLATION

Hearing Rama's words Sugreeva who was together with the highly wise Lakshmana stood up saluting and spoke these words:

VERSE 17

रावणेन प्रणिहितम् तमवेहि निशाचरम्

rāvaṇena praṇihitam tamavehi niśācaram

SYNONYMS

kṣamavatāmvara: O | ṟama the ekṣcellent among those vho are tolerant! avaci: Realiase | tam: that | niśācaram: ranger in night(demon) | praṇihatam: to have been sent | rāvaṇena: by Ravana | manye: I think | tasya: of him | kṣamam: befitting | nigraham: to be taken as captive." |

TRANSLATION

"O, Rama the excellent among the tolerant! Realise that Ravana has sent Vibhishana, the demon. I think of him to be worthy of being taken as a captive."

VERSE 18

राक्षसो जिह्मया बुद्ध्या संदिष्टो।अय मिहागतः

rākṣaso jihmayā buddhyā saṃdiṣṭo|aya mihāgataḥ

SYNONYMS

19| anagha: O | faultless one! mahābāho: O | mighty armed! ayam rākṣasaḥ: This demon | samdiṣṭaḥ: is been sent | prahartum: to strike | tvayi: you | viśvaste: in trust | mayivā: or me | lakṣmaṇeva: or Lakshmana | āgataḥ: and came | iha: here | jihmayā: with crooked | buddhyā: mind | saḥ: he | sacivaiḥsaha: with his counselors | badhyaḥ: are fit to be imprisoned | vibhīṣaṇaḥ: Vibhishana | bhrāta hi: is indeed brother | rāvaṇasya: of Ravana | nṛśamsasya: the cruel demon. |

TRANSLATION

"O, the mighty armed Rama! The faultless one! This demon is being sent to kill you who are unsuspecting, or to kill Lakshmana or me in trust. He came here with a crooked mind. He with his counselors is fit to be imprisoned. Is not Vibhishana the brother of cruel Ravana?"

VERSE 20

एवमुक्त्वा रघुश्रेष्टं सुग्रीवो वाहिनीपतिः

evamuktvā raghuśreṣṭaṃ sugrīvo vāhinīpatiḥ

SYNONYMS

uktvā: speaking | evam: thus | raghuśreṣṭam: to Rama the best of Raghu dynasty | ṣugrīvaḥ: Sugreeva | vākyaġ^yaḥ: who knew the mode of expression | tatah: thereafter | pāgamat: obtained | mounam: silence. |

TRANSLATION

Speaking thus to Rama, the best of Raghu dynasty, Sugreeva who knew the mode of expression, thereafter kept silent.

VERSE 21

स सुग्रीवस्य तद् वाक्यय्म् रामः श्रुत्वा विमृश्य च

sa sugrīvasya tad vākyaym rāmaḥ śrutvā vimṛśya ca

SYNONYMS

bhrutvā: hearing | tat vākyam: those words | sugrīvasya: of Sugreeva | rāmaḥ: Rama | vimṛśyaca: pondered over them and | tataḥ: thereafter | uvāca: spoke | subha taram: more auspicious | vākyam: words | haripuṇgavam: to Sugreeva. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those words of Sugreeva, Rama pondered over the words and thereafter spoke more auspicious words to Sugreeva as follows:

VERSE 22

सुदुष्टो वा अपि अदुष्टो वा किम् एष रजनी चरः

suduṣṭo vā api aduṣṭo vā kim eṣa rajanī caraḥ

SYNONYMS

kim: what if | eṣaḥ: this | rajanīcaraḥ: demon | suduṣṭovā: is very bad? asaktaH = He is incapable | kartum: of doing | kathamcana: scarcely | sūkṣmam: a little | ahitamapi: harm | mama: to me. |

TRANSLATION

"What does it matter whether that demon is very bad or not bad? He is incapable of doing even a little harm to me."

VERSE 23

पिशाचान् दानवान् यक्षान् पृथिव्याम् चैव राक्षसान्

piśācān dānavān yakṣān pṛthivyām caiva rākṣasān

SYNONYMS

harigaṇeśvara: O | ṣugrīva ḻord of monkey trūps! īcchan: If I wish | hanyām: I will kill | tān: those | piśācān: devilish beings | dānavān: demons | yakṣān: supernatural beings | rākṣasancaiva: and ogres | pṛthivyām: living on earth | aṇgulyagreṇa: with the tip of my finger. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Sugreeva, Lord of monkey-troops! If I wish, I can kill those devilish beings, demons, supernatural beings and ogres living on earth with just a tip of my finger"

VERSE 24

श्रूयते हि कपोतेन शत्रुः शरणम् आगतः

śrūyate hi kapotena śatruḥ śaraṇam āgataḥ

SYNONYMS

śrūyate hi: it is heard | śatruḥ: an enemy | āgataḥ: came | śaraṇam: for a refuge | arcitaśca: was received | yathānyāyam: according to rules of hospitality | nimantritaśca: and was invited for a feast | svaiḥ: with its own | māmsaiḥ: flesh. |

TRANSLATION

"It is narrated how by a dove, its enemy ( a fowler) when it came for a refuge, was received according to rules of hospitality and was invited for a feast with its own flesh."

VERSE 25

स हि तम् प्रतिजग्राह भार्या हर्तारम् आगतम्

sa hi tam pratijagrāha bhāryā hartāram āgatam

SYNONYMS

saḥ kaptaḥ: that dove | pratijagrāha hi: indeed accepted as a guest | tam: the fowler | āgatam: as he came | bharyāhantāram: although he killed its wife | kimpunaḥ: how much more | janaḥ: a man | madvidhaḥ: like me? |

TRANSLATION

"O, the excellent of monkeys! The aforesaid dove indeed accepted as a guest, the fowler as he came, although he killed its wife .How much more a man like me has to do?"

VERSE 26

ऋषेः कण्वस्य पुत्रेण कण्डुना परम ऋषिणा

ṛṣeḥ kaṇvasya putreṇa kaṇḍunā parama ṛṣiṇā

SYNONYMS

putreṇa: the son | purā: long ago | kanvasya ṛṣe: of a sage called Kanva | satyavādinā: a great sage | kaṇḍūnā: and by Kandu by name | gathā: verses | dharmiṣṭhā: inculcating virtue | gītā: were sung | śruṇu: hear them. |

TRANSLATION

"Hear the verses inculcating virtue so long ago, by Kandu, the son of a sage called Kanva, a great sage and a speaker of truth."

VERSE 27

बद्ध अन्जलि पुटम् दीनम् याचन्तम् शरण आगतम्

baddha anjali puṭam dīnam yācantam śaraṇa āgatam

SYNONYMS

paramtapa: O | king the torminator of enemies! ṣatrum api: even an enemy | baddhāṇjalipuṭram: who formed a cup with his hollowed hands | yācantam: a person who is begging | śaraṇāgatam: and who is seeking refuge | na hanyāt: should not be killed | anṛśamsyārtham: with the aim of not being cruel. |

TRANSLATION

"O, king the terminator of enemies! Even an enemy, who formed a cup with his hollowed hands, a miserable person, a person who is begging and who is seeking a refuge should not be killed with the aim of not being cruel."

VERSE 28

अर्तो वा यदि वा दृप्तः परेषाम् शरणम् गतः

arto vā yadi vā dṛptaḥ pareṣām śaraṇam gataḥ

SYNONYMS

ariḥ: an enemy | gataḥ: who gets | śaraṇam: a refuge | pareṣām: from others | ārtovā: even if he is oppressed | yadivā: or | dṛptaḥ: arrogant | rakṣitavyaḥ: is to be protected | parityajya: by abandoning | prāṇān: even lives | kṝtātmanā: by one who has a well-disciplined mind. |

TRANSLATION

"An enemy who comes for protection against others, even if the aforesaid enemy is oppressed or arrogant, is to be protected by one who has a disciplined mind, even by abandoning one's life."

VERSE 29

स चेद् भयाद् वा मोहाद् वा कामाद् वा अपि न रक्षति

sa ced bhayād vā mohād vā kāmād vā api na rakṣati

SYNONYMS

saḥ narakṣaticet: If he does not | svayā: by his | śaktyā: strength | yathānyāyam: rightly | bhayadvā: by fear | mohādvā: or by ignorance | kamādvāpi: by or desire | tat: it | pāpam: is a sin | lokagarhitam: to be reproached by the world. |

TRANSLATION

"If he does not protect rightly through his strength, by fear or by ignorance or by desire, it is a sin to be reproached by the world."

VERSE 30

विनष्टः पश्यतस् तस्य रक्षिणः शरण आगतः

vinaṣṭaḥ paśyatas tasya rakṣiṇaḥ śaraṇa āgataḥ

SYNONYMS

arakṣitaḥ: having not been protected | gataḥ: being in | śaraṇam: a refuge | tasya: his | rakṣiṇaḥ: protector | paśyataḥ: while seeing | vinaṣṭaḥ: dies | sarvam: whole | sukṛtam: moral merit | ādāya: having taken along | gacchet: goes. |

TRANSLATION

"If having not been protected, a refugee dies before the eyes of a man who is able to protect him, the former takes along all his moral merit and goes."

VERSE 31

एवम् दोषो महान् अत्र प्रपन्नानाम् अरक्षणे

evam doṣo mahān atra prapannānām arakṣaṇe

SYNONYMS

mahān doṣaḥ: there is a great blemish | evam: thus | atra: in this | arakṣane: who take refuge | asvargyam: it does not bestow heaven | ayaśasyamca: it destroys reputation | balavīrya vināśanam: it devastates strength and valor." |

TRANSLATION

"In not protecting thus the persons who take refuge, there is a great blemish involved in it. It does not bestow heaven. It destroys reputation. It devastates strength and valor"

VERSE 32

करिष्यामि यथा अर्थम् तु कण्डोर् वचनम् उत्तमम्

kariṣyāmi yathā artham tu kaṇḍor vacanam uttamam

SYNONYMS

kariṣyāmi: I will make | yathārtham: real | uttamam: the excellent | vacanam: words | kaṇḍoḥ: of Kandu | syāt: It becomes | dharmiṣṭham: very righteous | yaśasyam: gives a reputation | svargyam: leads to heaven | phalodayam: and rewards appear. |

TRANSLATION

"I will follow the excellent words of Kandu. It becomes a very righteous thing, gives reputation, leads to heaven and the rewards appear consequently."

VERSE 33

सकृद् एव प्रपन्नाय तव अस्मि इति च याचते

sakṛd eva prapannāya tava asmi iti ca yācate

SYNONYMS

yācate: he who seeks | prapannāya: refuge | sakṛdeva: just once | iti: saying that | asmi: I am | tava: yours | dadāmi: I shall give | abhayam: assurance of safety | sarva bhūtebhyaḥ: against all types of beings | etat: this | mama: is my | vratam: pledge. |

TRANSLATION

"He who seeks refuge in me just once, telling me that �I am yours', I shall give him assurance of safety against all types of beings. This is my solemn pledge"

VERSE 34

आनय एनम् हरि श्रेष्ठ दत्तम् अस्य अभयम् मया

ānaya enam hari śreṣṭha dattam asya abhayam mayā

SYNONYMS

sugrīva: O | hariśreṣṭha: the chief of monkeys! vibhiishhaNovaa = either he is Vibhishana | yadivā: or | rāvaṇaḥ: Ravana | svayam: himself | abhayam: an assurance of safety | dattam: has been given | asya: to him | mayā: by me | ānaya: bring | evam: him(here). |

TRANSLATION

"O, Sugreeva, the chief of monkeys! Let him either be Vibhishana or even Ravana himself; I have given an assurance of safety to him. Bring him here."

VERSE 35

रामस्य वचनम् श्रुत्वा सुग्रीवः प्लवग ईश्वरः

rāmasya vacanam śrutvā sugrīvaḥ plavaga īśvaraḥ

SYNONYMS

śrutvā: hearing | vacanaḥ: words | ṣugrīvaḥ: Sugreeva | plavageśvara: the Lord of monkeys | abhipūrita: overwhelmed | souhardena: with cordial friendship | pratyabhāṣata: replied | kākutthsam: to Rama(as follows). |

TRANSLATION

Hearing Rama' s words, Sugreeva the lord of monkeys, overwhelmed as he was with cordial friendship, replied to Rama as follows:

VERSE 36

किम् अत्र चित्रम् धर्मज्ञ लोक नाथ शिखा मणे

kim atra citram dharmajña loka nātha śikhā maṇe

SYNONYMS

dharmaña: O | lokanāthasikhāmaṇe: the crest jewel among the lords of the world | kim: what | atra: is there | iti yat: in thinking that | tvam: you | sattvavān: endowed with true essence | athitaḥ: and established | satpathe: in right path | prabhāṣethāh: speak | āryam: these venerable words? |

TRANSLATION

"O, Rama, who knows righteousness, the crest jewel among lords of the world! What surprise is there in thinking that you, duly endowed with true essence of life and established in a right path, speak these venerable words?"

VERSE 37

मम च अपि अन्तर् आत्मा अयम् शुद्धिम् वेत्ति विभीषणम्

mama ca api antar ātmā ayam śuddhim vetti vibhīṣaṇam

SYNONYMS

ayam: this | mama: my | antarātmā ca: inmost spirit | vetti: feels | vibhīṣanam: Vibhishana | śuddham: to be genuine | suparīkṣitaḥ: being well examined | sarvataḥ: from all angles | anumānāt: by act of inference | bhāvāt: and by appearance. |

TRANSLATION

"My inmost spirit also feels Vibhishana to be a genuine person, he being well examined from all angles, by act of inference and by his appearance."

VERSE 38

तस्मात् क्षिप्रम् सह अस्माभिस् तुल्यो भवतु राघव

tasmāt kṣipram saha asmābhis tulyo bhavatu rāghava

SYNONYMS

rāghavā: O | ṭasmāt: Hence | bhavatu: let | vhbhīṣaṇah: Vibhishana | māhāprājñaḥ: the highly wise | tulyaḥ: be equal | asmābhiḥ ca: among us together | abhyupaitu: let him get | sakhitvamca: friendship too | nah: with us. |

TRANSLATION

"O, Rama! Hence, let the highly wise Vibhishana be equal among us soon together. Let him get our friendship too"

VERSE 39

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे अष्टादशः सर्गः

ityārṣe śrīmadrāmāyaṇe ādikāvye yuddhakāṇḍe aṣṭādaśaḥ sargaḥ

SYNONYMS

niśamya: hearing | tat sugrīva vacaḥ: those words of Sugreeva | nareśvaraḥ: Rama the king of men | abhihitam: as acknowledged | harīśvarena: by Sugreeva | jagāma: held | samgamam: meeting | vibhīṣaṇena: with Vibhishana | puramdaraḥ yathā: as Indra the lord of celestials | patattrirajena: had with Garuda the king of birds. |

TRANSLATION

Hearing those words of Sugreeva, Rama the king of men, as acknowledged by Sugreeva, held meeting with Vibhishana, as Indra the lord of celestials once met Garuda the king of birds. Thus, this is the 18th chapter in Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki Ramayana, the First Epic poem of India.
